elcome to Issue 4, Volume 7. The Belmond Company was established in 1976 when American James B. Sherwood purchased the legendary Hotel Cipriani on the island of Giudecca in Venice, northern Italy. Long considered one of the leading luxury hotels of the world, its room rates begin at USD $1,400 per night. Today the Company’s collection is diverse, spanning land and water. It operates 37 hotels around the world and seven train lines including the legendary VSOE in Europe, the Eastern & Oriental Express in Southeast Asia and the Belmond Royal Scotsman in Scotland. Belmond also has two river cruise operations, the Belmond Afloat in France which operates luxury péniche-hôtels (barges) on the inland waterways of France and the Belmond Road to Mandalay on the Ayeyarwady River in Myanmar. This month we are pleased to take you aboard the Road to Mandalay which stops at some of the country’s most awe-inspiring wonders such as the spectacular ancient city of Bagan, the royal capital of Mandalay and the sacred Hills of Sagaing. Leave your deck chair and join us on page 24 for a river cruise along the fabled Ayeyarwady.
The first annual King’s Cup Elephant Boat Race & River Festival took place on the banks of Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River over the weekend of March 29th to the 31st. Sponsored by Anantara, monies raised benefit Thailand’s beloved elephants. The event was held next to the Anantara Riverside and the Avani + Riverside Hotel’s and was one Bangkokians’s had been waiting for. Grab your sunblock and join us on page 48 for this new yearly must join event. Our world is getting more and more polarized with co-workers, family and friends having very strong opinions on important subjects such as global warming, vaccinations and politics. It can make something as mundane as a family dinner feel like a walk thru a mine field. This month we look at how to effectively communicate without having the mashed potatoes thrown at you. Turn to page 62 to learn a few timely people skills. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue. As always we thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.
Our “Let’s Go” this month takes us to the colorful land of lanterns located 700 kilometers north of Bangkok. Chiang Mai, the fourth largest city in Thailand is a paradise for adventurers, epicures and the soul-seekers. Once you stand in the midst of it all— where the past meets the present and the city meets the forest, you’ll understand why they call it the “Rose of the North”. Most of the action happens inside the Old City, where you’ll find plenty of guest houses, restaurants, the most famous temples as well as the popular Sunday Market. Dig out your comfortable walking shoes and join us on page 32 while we explore this historic city.

H
ave you ever walked past a restaurant or café and said to yourself “That looks really nice. I must try that one day!” I have, and thankfully I can now cross one of those restaurants off my list. And given our party so enjoyed the experience, I have to tell you about it! Hagi Japanese restaurant is the Centara Grand Resort in Hua Hin, yet it sits outside resort in a prominent street

part of central of the corner
position. The polished timber floor of the main dining area sits slightly raised from the road. The wooden theme continues with the dining furniture complete with comfy cushions. Near the entry is a bar area – an ideal place to start. Try one of their Sake inspired cocktails from the extensive list. I can recommend the ‘Sake Caipirinha’ a delectable combination of Saki with lime juice, green tea, and wasabi syrup. Hagi’s atmosphere is open air and
Hua Hin’s wonderfully balmy evenings are one of its many charms. Don’t fret if the weather looks inclement as the restaurant has sturdy awnings that when opened would cover the entire dining area very effectively. Our visit coincided with Hagi’s Monday evening Japanese buffet. It’s an all-you-can-eat culinary tour of Japan. And what a fantastic journey it turned out to be!
HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND Off to the right of the outside dining area is an air-conditioned room focused on starters and desserts. First up, an eye-catching display of fresh sliced Sashimi presented within a fish-inspired ice sculpture. And what exceptional quality these thin slices of raw seafood were. Although I could have spent my whole evening just focused on the Sashimi, there were so many other options to taste and appreciate. Let’s start with the starter
or appetiser selection. Delicate Nigiri or “hand pressed” sushi - small portions of rice topped with wafer-thin slices of fresh seafood or seared meat. Next a delightfully colourful range of Maki – rolls of sushi rice with a variety of fillings wrapped in a sheet of nori (seaweed) and sliced into rounds. Think ‘California Roll’. There were dainty bowls of Japanese salads like spicy Salmon, a soba noodle salad, and more. Then the ‘poke bowls’
– small bowls part filled with sushi rice and topped with different fillings. I particularly liked the Spicy Minced Pork with Thai Herbs Poke. Another large carved ice display topped with freshly shucked oysters dominated the corner of the room, and a ‘must visit’ for oyster lovers. There was also a small selection of hot starters including one of my favourites, Gyoza Japanese dumplings.
HOT Magazine
21
Having worked our way through the Sushi, Sashimi and other starters it was time to explore the buffet stations in the main dining area. For Soba noodle lovers there is a Miso and Yakisoba noodle station where Chefs create dishes to order. Then two separate Teppanyaki grills. The first serving grilled seafood and a selection of vegetable dishes. There are also hot serving dishes with a choice of rice and other sides. The second teppan specialised in meats like chicken, pork and duck – small pieces quickly cooked on the grill as is the way with this style of cooking and served immediately. A selection of sauces were available for indulging. The crowning glory of this cooking station was the wagyu beef. Delicately cubed and grilled before being seasoned and served. Melt in your mouth tender and oh so delicious! The final station was tempura with the chef regularly cooking small batches of vegetables and seafood in that ever so light yet crispy batter. Once again, I had to go back for more!

HOT Magazine
After all of that, our party needed to rest before contemplating desserts. Japanese food is very much about eating with your eyes before engaging the other senses. Hagi’s dessert display was a perfect representation of that. Beautifully presented delicate portions designed to tempt and tantalise. The smallest of fruit tarts, profiteroles filled with a green tea cream, petit squares of Japanese blueberry cheesecake, and a selection of Macarons, just to name a few. There were also platters of fresh sliced tropical fruit. For the ice-cream lover – creamy as you like vanilla, or Matcha tea flavoured ice-cream which I found very enjoyable and not overly sweet. Hagi Japanese restaurant offers the “Culinary Treasures of Japan” allyou-can-eat buffet only on Monday evenings. The buffet is available from 18:00 to 22:00 hours, April – October 2019 and is priced at 1,200++ THB per person. Tuesday to Sunday, Hagi restaurant opens at 17:00 for à la carte dining. For April and May, Japanese Sous Chef, Narongsak Thongchue, and the Hagi culinary team invite all connoisseurs of Japanese cuisine to experience their latest “A New Japanese Flair” promotion. A new à la carte selection sure to satisfy your Japanese food cravings. If, like this writer, you have passed this restaurant and thought “I must try that” then now is the time and the Monday evening “Culinary Treasures of Japan” buffet is an excellent introduction. the Belmond Grand Hotel Europe, St. Petersburg; Belmond Copacabana Palace, Rio de Janeiro; Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa, Riviera Maya; and Belmond El Encanto, Santa Barbara.
In Botswana, Belmond operates Safari’s and in New York it owns ‘21’, one of New York’s most storied restaurants whose clientele includes movie stars, Presidents and captains of industry.
The Company’s seven tourist trains include the legendary VSOE in Europe, the Eastern & Oriental Express in Southeast Asia and the Belmond Royal Scotsman in Scotland. The company also co-owns and manages the PeruRail in Peru, which operates, among other routes, the Cusco-Machu Picchu train used by nearly every tourist to Peru.
Belmond also has two river cruise operations, the Belmond Afloat in France, which operates luxury péniche-hôtels (barges) on the inland waterways of France and the Belmond Road to Mandalay on the Ayeyarwady River in Myanmar. With such a glamorous history, one can expect the highest of praise for the
50 year old Road to Mandalay cruiser. The atmosphere on the long, slender boat reflects a decidedly vintage but also eclectic mix of Burmese, British, modern and traditional styles. The 43 spacious en-suite cabins are airconditioned and furnished with beautiful fabrics and polished teak. The ship offers multiple room types including Single, Superior and Deluxe—all on the lower deck. The Deluxe is slightly roomier than the Superior and both come with twin beds. State Cabins, situated on the floor above, together with the Governor’s Suite, are larger still with double beds.
All cabins have large windows but none have balconies so everyone tends to head up to the top deck for the best views—adding to the social feel of the journey. The sprawling observation deck is the ship’s showpiece, with its scalloped canopy, dipping pool, cocktail bar and outdoor-living-room lounges. A fitness room, nightly entertainment, spa rooms, world-class cuisine and an attentive staff round out the luxury. Indeed, Belmond Road to Mandalay is a magical and iconic journey down the Ayeyarwady River, evoking times gone by. The boat stops at some of the
country’s most awe-inspiring wonders such as the spectacular ancient city of Bagan, the royal capital of Mandalay and the sacred Sagaing Hills. Sagaing, with numerous Buddhist monasteries, is an important religious and monastic centre. The pagodas and monasteries crowd the numerous hills along the ridge running parallel to the river. The central pagoda, Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda, is connected by a set of covered staircases that run up the 240 m hill.

The boat carries up to 82 passengers, offering a posh oasis in a nation of thatched-hut villages, rice paddies and thousands of Buddhist pagodas. Each day is filled with events, excursions, and entertainment. Aside from shore excursions guests can partake in topical talks from a range of local and international experts or join a cooking class to learn some Burmese specialties. As well as a range of activities in the fitness center, yoga and tai chi are offered on board and at select locations along the route. A juice bar serves healthy drinks. On certain journeys, Belmond Road to Mandalay features renowned guest yoga teachers, most especially Dr. Hla Tun, the ship’s resident doctor. He is available on call for guests 24 hours a day. In addition to his work as a physician, Dr Tun has instigated and continues to run an extraordinary philanthropic program. Since the ship began operating, he has liaised with local people and guests of the ship to build and run 26 schools in the region which offer medical assistance. The cruise takes you along the fabled Ayeyarwady River through some of the most untouched and peaceful areas in Southeast Asia. Starting in the Himalayas, the great Ayeyarwady River runs vertically down through the center of Myanmar, towards the Andaman Sea. As it flows it passes Mandalay, the country’s last royal capital, and Bagan, home to over two thousand ancient pagodas. The Belmond Road to Mandalay cruise ship links these two great destinations, gliding through vast plains and open farmland. This is a chance to forge your own adventure while crafting a meaningful and lasting connection with the land and its people. Guests can choose to travel north to south along the Ayeyarwady from Mandalay to Bagan or vice versa, both take part in shore excursions. Perhaps a horse and cart or bicycle tour of Ava, an ancient imperial capital from the 14th to 19th centuries or a walking tour around the small riverside town of Mingun and a visit to the famous unfinished stupa, Pahtodawgyi.

Bagan is the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Pagan, and home to over two thousand ancient pagodas. There are a multitude of ways to navigate its network of paved and dirt roads. For an authentic experience, rent a bike and travel to the Shwesandaw Phaya, a teak pagoda offering sweeping views of the city from the top of its turrets. The countryside surrounding the city is stunning, with the curving palm trees and soft sandstone stupas set against undulating hills. One of Bagan’s largest and most ornate temples is Ananda, a towering white edifice that houses four giant Buddhas. Fine examples of Bagan’s two artisan industries – terracotta tiles and lacquer – can also be seen here. On the outskirts of Mandalay, the riverbanks are serene landscapes of palm trees and gleaming white pagodas topped with gold domes. Immortalized in Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem, Mandalay is the last royal city of Myanmar. Shrouded in mystique and allure, Mandalay is the center of Myanmar’s gold lead and marble craftsmanship. There are entire streets of artisans devoted to marble carving, with shops selling their wares. There’s also a chance to visit one of the many gold leaf workshops to see how the precious metal is still hammered arduously by hand to produce gleaming, paper-thin sheets. These are bought by local people to be rubbed on to Buddhas at the pagodas. Kuthodaw pagoda, at the foot of Mandalay Hill, features what is known as the world’s largest “book” – 750 marble tablets engraved with Buddhist teachings. By contrast Shwenandaw Monastery, a former palace of King Mindon rebuilt in this location near Mandalay Hill, is a serenely beautiful teak mansion featuring exquisite carvings. In both Mandalay and Bagan passengers may visit one of the many local markets to see the array of fresh produce gleaned from the surrounding countryside. In the mornings there’s a profusion of carts selling mohinga, a clear fish soup with fine rice noodles which local people love to eat for breakfast, and freshly made rice or wheat noodles which are popular at any time of day. A particular favorite is the local specialty Mandalay Mondi - a rice noodle dish with chicken curry. Belmond Road to Mandalay passengers can see the noodles being made and even have a go themselves. In Bagan, guests may also visit a household that makes ponyegyi, a fermented soy bean paste which is added to curries and salads. In between excursions, life on board is punctuated by culinary experiences from afternoon tea to cocktail parties. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in a spacious dining room and under shade on the observation deck. Guests are free to dine à deux although many choose to eat with new friends made on the trip.

The general manager of Belmond Road to Mandalay, Eddie Teh takes immense pride in the smooth running of the cruise. Having experienced Myanmar’s smooth transition to the outside world, an important part of Eddie’s job has been to establish a relationship with villagers along the ship’s routes to make them feel that they are showcasing their homeland to foreigners. “There are many places where the local people are not familiar with having visitors and some haven’t seen foreigners before, especially when we introduce a new journey. When they feel a part of the visit, they become proud hosts and naturally engage with our guests who in turn are immersed in the experience and discover the true magic of Myanmar,” says Eddie. Chiang Mai
T
ravellers know it well, the colorful land of lanterns and more that is located 700 km north of Bangkok. It was the former seat of the Lanna Kingdom, hence the name (Chiang Mai means “new city”) when it succeeded Chiang Rai as the capital. Now it is a paradise for adventurers, epicures and the soulseeker. Chiang Mai is the fourth largest city in Thailand and once you stand in the midst of it all—where past meets the present, city meets forest, you’ll inevitably fall in love with the “Rose of the North”.
32
HOT Magazine
Chiang Mai was founded in 1296, on the banks of the Ping River and it has flourished to be one of the most livable places in all of Southeast Asia. It’s a great place to really immerse into the culture of Thailand side by side with the breathtaking landscape of Northern Thailand. Most of the action happens inside the Old City, where you’ll find plenty of guest houses, restaurants, the most famous temples as well as the popular Sunday Market. Downtown is actually pretty small and easy to navigate, while just outside the city walls, the Night Bazar and Loi Kroh
headlines as another popular hangout. As is much of Thailand, Chiang Mai is home to over 300 Buddhist temples. The most famous is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, which stands on Doi Suthep to the north-west of the city. The temple dates from 1383 and is cherished as an embodiment of Lanna architecture. The journey up the winding mountain road is an experience in itself. You can rent a scooter, a car or take a songthaew to get to the bustling market at the foot of the temple but you still have 309 steps to climb before you reach the revered temple. The mountain, on which the
temple stands, overlooks the city from the northwest, providing commanding views from its summit. On a clear day, the chedi (stupa) is illuminated by the sun, its golden exterior blazing over the city. Visitors to the park can also pay a visit to the small hilltribe villages on the park grounds, which offer a glimpse into a way of life that has changed very little in hundreds of years. In the city itself, Wat Phra Singh is the most popular and the second most venerated temple in Chiang Mai after Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Dating back
to 1345, the temple houses the city’s most important Buddha image, the Lion Buddha. Another classic epitome of Lanna architecture, the temple complex is located on the west side of the Old City—a perfect starting point for walking through the remainder of Chiang Mai’s temples such as Wat Chedi Luang which once housed the jade Emerald Buddha. Or the Wat Phan Tao which is right next door to War Chedi Luang. The humble temple’s assembly hall is almost entirely made of teak wood and was once a throne hall for the king of Chiang Mai. One stop you
definitely must make is at Wat Chiang Man, the oldest temple in Chiang Mai. It is believed that Wat Chiang Man was established by the city’s founder, Phaya Mengrai, in 1297, a year after the city was founded. The original chedi, which has a square-shaped stone base and golden upper half, is surrounded by 15 elephants, giving it the nickname “Elephant Temple”. A little known fact about the temple is that it’s actually not the oldest—Wat Phra That Doi Kham predates Wat Chiang Man by several hundred years.

One of the chedis dates to the year 687. Located south of Doi Suthep on a hilltop southwest of the city, its main attraction is a 17-meter Buddha wearing a golden robe. On the same end of the city is Wat U Mong—a mystical forest temple with tunnels. Legend tells of a spiritually gifted but eccentric monk who often wandered into the forest in a state of revery, sometimes getting lost for days. The King, being very fond of the monk, ordered a maze of tunnels constructed so that the monk could safely wander there unsupervised. First built in the 14th century, the temple was abandoned then restored in the 1940s. It includes a collection of tunnels leading to underground shrines below a large platform where the main chedi sits. Outside, you can feed the fish and turtles or walk around the “talking trees” that offer words of advice (in Thai and English). It’s a tradition at Wat Umong for its resident monks to paint dharma sayings on wooden placards and nail them to trees around the monastery. South of U Mong lies one of Chiang Mai’s coolest up and coming neighborhoods. Nearby you'll find the picturesque Chiang Mai University which has recently been ranked as one of the top 100 universities in Asia. Chiang Mai has long been known as the artists’ hub, evidenced in the stunning architecture, woodwork and textiles that date back to the ancient Lanna years. With one foot in the past and the other in the present, it is no wonder that art has set its eyes on the new digital age. Most of the fledgling artists here are either students or recent alumni of the university, and many of the more established figures still teach there. The university also hosts Kad Na Mor, the CMU Night Market. Opposite the campus, the stalls sell mainly everything fashion for pretty good prices. You can still bargain though. Chiang Mai embodies Thailand’s title as the Land of Smiles and you can witness it yourself as you stroll through any of the unnumbered soi’s to chat with the artists and locals.

While you may enjoy freshly brewed coffee or any of the freshly baked delicacies in the numerous cafes dotted throughout the city, stuff yourself full with khao soi (egg noodles in a coconut curry broth), a well-known (and much loved) Northern Thai curry. The dish can be found in many places all over town and each restaurant has its own recipe and its own take on the combination of ingredients, consistency and spiciness. Another favorite is khao kha moo (succulent stewed pork leg served over rice) or khanom krok (coconut rice pancakes) which are eaten as a dessert. Northern Thai Cuisine is heavily influenced by the neighboring countries of Burma, Laos and China. The distinct flavors are a world away from coconut milk, palm sugar and fish sauce that is so prevalent in central and southern Thailand. Here, the cuisine is spicy, sour and pungent like laab (mincemeat, offal and blood salad) and nam prik (tomato pork dip) and kaeng khanun (jackfruit curry). If you don’t know what to do in Chiang Mai, the food will lead the way.

Follow it to the Wui Lai Market by the Old City. The market is open every Saturday and while it is dedicated to arts and crafts, you’ll find the square bursting with food vendors whilst surrounded by tourists and locals alike sitting together and enjoying the food. You can also take a cooking class allowing you to recreate the food back home. There are schools inside the Old City while others offer the course in a beautiful Thai farm setting outside of town. You can choose from half day to full or multiple day classes, from beginners to masters and with some schools being fancier than others. Additionally, there are many spas to relax and unwind after all the action and adventuring. A rather interesting massage can be found at the Chiang Mai Women’s Correctional Institution which offers a program that trains inmates on Thai Massage in order to help the women gain employment and integrate them back into society. Cooler than Bangkok or the south, Chiang Mai is most popular from December to February. Chiang Mai’s
famous flower festival is held in February and features a procession of elaborately decorated floats each made from various flowers. A huge variety of street foods is one of the main draws of this particular festival. Traditional dance and costumes are also widely on display, combining with the other factors for a cultural experience that is unique and authentic. There is also a pageant in which girls from all over compete for the title of "Flower Festival Queen." It gets unbearably hot in March, referred to as the “burning season” when farmers burn their fields to clear them for recultivation. The rain comes in heavy downpours from May to November but those only last for an hour or so. Even then, come prepared with a jacket or a light sweater for when you ride up to the mountains. However, don’t miss the Loi Krathong holiday in November. The festival is celebrated throughout Thailand to honor Buddha but in the north, it coincides with the Lanna festival of Yi Peng. As Chiang Mai was the former capital of the Lanna kingdom, it holds the largest Yi Peng festival.
To celebrate, there is a beautiful display of colorful floating lanterns in the river, fireworks, parades and people in elaborate, traditional attire. Just a day before is the release of the sky lanterns. Sky lanterns when released are said to end a person’s bad luck or misfortune, especially if it disappears from view before the fire goes out. It is a magical sight— hundreds of floating fire lanterns lighting up the sky as small banana leaf boats with flowers, incense and candles drift down the rivers. And as Loi Krathong is Thailand’s most beautiful holiday, Songkran is the wildest. In celebration of Thai New Year in April, Songkran is essentially the world’s biggest water fight and no one is spared. Since Chiang Mai is a popular tourist destination in Thailand, you can reach the city by airplane, bus, train or minivan. You can even take international flights directly to Chiang Mai from Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Singapore and Korea or fly domestic from Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Samui and so on. Furthermore, there is a train connection from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, but it usually takes 12 hours or more to arrive. Bus and minivans also drive from many different cities to Chiang Mai such as Pai, Chiang Rai, from the Issan, Bangkok and more. Chiang Mai is no less a gateway to paradise, an intricate maze filled with a thousand hidden treasures. While there is a lot to do and see, Chiang Mai’s greatest charm is in taking it slow and seeing how the day unfolds. Instead of cramming your schedule with cooking classes and day trips to see the elephants, begin with a leisurely breakfast, then pick a direction and wander, stopping in at temples, markets and cafes that catch your eye. There will always be a thousand things to do and more but that is Chiang Mai’s main charm—the promise of coming back again and again.

The race course length was 200 meters and each heat had 4 teams, the first to cross the finish line won and progressed to Sunday’s grand final race. Day 1’s atmosphere on the water and along the rivers edge was off to an electric start with the highlight heat raced between Pilipinas Orient Dragons (Philippines); Dongguan Sheen Fine (China); Pradu Thong Goddess (Royal Thai Navy) and Yutthakarnnawa (Royal Thai Navy Seals). The international paddlers fared well but they were no match for Thailand’s best. With less than 6 seconds between all the elephant boats, the Royal Navy Seals came out on top taking only 46.68 seconds to paddle 200m. Second spot was the Pradu Thong Goddess at 48.11 seconds followed by Dongguan Sheen Fine at 49.14 seconds and finally the Pilipinas Orient Dragons at 52.47 seconds. On land, Friday also kicked off the start of the Asia Cup Indoor Rowing Tournament with teams from 9 countries competing. Here for the tourney were teams from Bahrain, Chinese Taipei, India, Iraq, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand. Each indoor rowing heat consisted of 8 rowers rowing 2km with both female and male competitors vying for the coveted Asia Cup trophies. When the sun went down the music kicked in. Festival goers were treated to popular Thai musicians the Chai Bang, Atom Chanakan and J.Jetrin. Saturday was Ladies Day and included a best dressed contest. Thai style was the theme and the winning ladies walked off with fabulous holidays at some of Anantara’s most beautiful locations which included Abu Dhabi, Oman, the Maldives, Siem Reap and Koh Phangan. On the water it was time for the Semi-Finals. The first heat of the semifinals was a closely fought battle between Thailand teams from the Royal Thai Navy, the Institute of Physical Education and Singburi province. Each team of 20 paddlers fought hard for a place in the finals but it was the Institute of Physical Education team that passed the finish line with a photo finish at 48.03 seconds closely followed by Pradu Thong Goddess (Royal Thai Navy) 49.04 seconds, Singburi 49.28 seconds and Pradu Ngern Goddess (Royal Thai Navy) 53.69 seconds. Evening entertainment followed with Dj’s, the Thai Youth Orchestra, New Jiew and Singto Numchok.

To mark the occasion, a selection of inspirational personalities will be helping to spread the message globally. board, Ping Coombes, MasterChef UK 2014 champion - another Save Wild Tigers' Ambassador - will be cooking up a storm for guests.
The ‘Tiger Express’ The six-night itinerary will see guests travel in luxury from Bangkok to Singapore through the historic tiger territories in Malaysia and Thailand with a stay at the Siam Bangkok and Raffles Singapore included in the package. During the journey, guests will embark on several excursions including a guided visit to the River Kwai and a tour of Kuala Kangsar.
A ‘ rt in Motion’ For the carriage design, Tsai will draw on his love of pop art combined with traditional Chinese values to create a vibrant and eye-catching design which will be unveiled ahead of the journey in September. To tie in with the theme of this special journey, tigers will be a prominent feature in the art work along with the Asian landscape and nature. This third generation of ‘Art in Motion’ for the Eastern & Oriental Express will remain on the train for year.
The Current Situation The wild tiger has huge cultural and historical significance throughout Asia but it is a little-known fact that worldwide tiger numbers are now at critical levels with only 3,800 tigers left in the wild globally & few as 400 in Thailand & Malaysia combined. These 3,800 remaining wild tigers are for the most part spread across Indian subcontinent, Asia & Russia but within a decade based on current rates of decline could be completely extinct. This special journey aims to raise awareness of their plight.
A ‘ Worthwhile Cause’ “It is a sad fact that today there are more tigers in captivity than there are in the wild, our train travels through the heart of the historic tiger territories in Malaysia and Thailand and we are proud to lend our support to this worthwhile cause. We find that our guests are increasingly looking to give back to have an impact on the places they are visiting in a bid to travel more consciously. Following the success of the last ‘Tiger Express’ we are very excited to run this journey again to help spread the message worldwide” said Gary Franklin, Vice President, Trains & Cruises, Belmond. Simon Clinton, Founder, Save Wild Tigers comments, “With potentially as few as 10 years left to save this iconic species from extinction, the clock really is ticking. We are really proud & grateful to be working with the Eastern & Oriental Express once again in providing passengers a chance to experience a trip of a lifetime, for what surely must be the cause of a lifetime. Profits from our all of our campaigns go towards creating global awareness campaigns for the cause & funding targeted tiger conservation projects.”

Navigating in a Polarized World
I
n today’s highly divided political climate, even time spent with family and friends can quickly turn contentious. There we are, innocently gathering around the dinner table, when -- BAM! -- an issue comes up that threatens to ruin not just the meal but our closest relationships. Jason Jay and Gabriel Grant, researchers at MIT and Yale have found that you can’t change someone else’s mind or their habits. The harder you try, the more resistance you face, and frustrated you become.

You may retreat and fail, or worse, lose your cool and harm your cause. But there is a better way. Concentrate instead on the context you’re creating for the other person to explore a new perspective or behavior. A key part of that context is your own way of being in the conversation (your stance or attitude). Consider “Michaela,” a young woman passionate about health whose story is among those that appear in their new book, “Breaking Through Gridlock: The Power of Conversation
in a Polarized World.” Her mother is overweight, due in part to her eating habits. Michaela has tried to get her mom to change her diet. She has repeatedly told her which foods are healthy and which aren’t. She’s stressed the scary consequences of obesity and diabetes. It doesn’t work, but she continues to try every time they talk. Their conversations have grown so tired and uncomfortable, they no longer share meals together. This pattern in conversations is sadly becoming far too prevalent due to the
polarization that is taking over the world around us on a range of topics such as global warming, vaccinations, elections and Brexit.
mother describe your way of being?” After a pause, she said, “nagging… disrespectful.” Michaela saw this wasn’t going to work.
To face these situations effectively, the first step is to shift your attention away from the other person and onto yourself instead. Ask yourself--What is your way of being? What kind of atmosphere are you creating for the conversation? When Michaela first reflected on her way of being with her mom, she said “I am educating.” When asked: “How would your
So why do we get stuck in this kind of trap? Why do we choose a way of being that, deep down, we know won’t be effective? We get stuck because there is a secondary gain or a psychological reward that baits the trap. It’s what authors Bob Kegan and Lisa Lahey call a “Hidden Competing Commitment.” When asked what that bait was, Michaela acknowledged that she gets
to feel right and righteous about her mother’s eating habits. This is very human but to move forward, you must identify the bait and let it go. Michaela was asked to “Imagine if you were to let go of being right. Think instead about what you really want for your relationship with your mother. If you created a new way of being, what would that be?” Michaela thought for a moment and replied, “I could be loving… maybe collaborative.”

Michaela reported back a few weeks later: After we spoke, I sat down to have a conversation with my mom about her well being and eating healthier... I was worried it would just fall back into the same old pattern of us yelling and arguing with each other. That being said, when I told her that I wanted to try and approach this conversation in a different manner she seemed very open to it. Throughout the conversation, we both discussed that along with being healthier, it could also serve as a chance to make time for each other in our busy lives. We agreed to try and do some meal planning for dinners together, to go grocery shopping together and to even help each other cook. I can say with pride that last week we actually cooked together and ate dinner with each other at the kitchen table three nights out of
the week. In the last year and half we haven’t eaten dinner together at the table ONCE, so three times in one week is a definite improvement. Will conversations like this create consensus within our larger polarized world? It’s a great place to start. Michaela’s success is a win for her mom’s health, a win for their relationship, and sets her up to be a more powerful health advocate for others going forward. Shortly after America’s 2016 election, Jason & Gabriel heard from many people who were avoiding communicating with their loved ones out of fear of where the conversations might lead. It wasn’t just people ‘unfriending’ virtual acquaintances but, rather, family members or dear friends who quit speaking to one another about
the topics that mattered most to them. After all, why wade into a conversation that may risk upsetting and damaging the relationship, perhaps irrevocably? But avoiding conversations with those we love eventually creates the very upset and damage we feared. Many people approach these difficult conversations with the following trade-off in mind: Either I stay quiet about the issue and keep the peace in my relationship/family, or I charge forward with the issue even if the relationship becomes collateral damage. Neither of these options is appealing. Worse, neither works. Staying quiet and keeping the peace fails in at least two ways. Let’s say you decide that maintaining your relationship with [insert your loved one here] is more important
HOT Magazine
65
than championing the issues that are important to you. You keep your mouth shut whenever the conversation turns to race, climate change, politics etc.. How close does this really make you feel with the person? Do you really know them? Do they really know you? Moreover, psychologists tell us that relatedness is a necessary ingredient for changing hearts and minds. The person both advocating for your cause and related to your Uncle Tim is you. If you don’t talk to them, you’ll be left criticizing their congressman or CEO from your armchair, and that won’t have any effect. Going in hot also fails. When we charge into conversations, too often we get distracted by the temptations to be right, righteous and certain. As soon as it becomes apparent that we’re valuing being right more than our relationship with Uncle Tim, the conversation will go off the rails fast. Profound breakthroughs occur when people abandon choosing between the relationship and their cause. Instead, they choose to explore the possibility of standing for both. Building the relationship and sharing about what matters are inseparable. They are one in the same. Where might the conversation go if you said something like, “Our relationship is really important to me and I want to be able to talk to you about the things I care about. In the past, I was afraid, and decided that it wasn’t possible. I’ve been hiding what matters to me from you, and I don’t want to do that anymore. Going forward, I’d like to look for ways for us both to explore things that are meaningful and in a way that contributes toward, rather than diminishes, our time together. Would you help me?” Consider this story from an undergraduate student, we’ll call her Charlotte, who tried a new approach with her grandmother. “Looking back on the conversation, I am surprised by how much I was able to keep my emotions in check. Usually when I argue with my grandmother, I take her opposition to my viewpoints much more personally. I often feel that our differences prevent us from having as deep of a relationship as we otherwise might. But this conversation was different... it was a much more open discourse. Though I failed at changing her mind... I think that our ability to discuss these issues more openly and conversationally was a big step for us.

In addition, when I asked my grandmother how she would feel if I were to pursue a career fighting for environmental causes, she surprised me with her answer. She told me that as long as the organization had integrity, she would support me in my work. In light of her extremely strong opinions, I was so glad to hear that she could look past our disagreement on the issues and still wish me well in my pursuit of environmental causes. This showed me that my grandmother loves me enough to respect my values, whether or not they align with her own, and that’s a wonderful thing to hear.”
We can all continue to pretend that “the other side” is somehow totally disconnected and we don’t know how to reach them. Meanwhile, we can collectively ignore that everyone on “the other side” has a cousin, a spouse, a best friend with different views, experiences, and beliefs. We can further ignore that for someone, we are that cousin, spouse, or best friend. We can continue to avoid the difficult work of figuring out how to talk to one another. Or, we can stand for something different.
Will these conversations be easy? Heck no. It will take many failures to find an effective way of communicating our message among people who think differently. Often, friends and family who love us are more likely to graciously allow us to fail and try again. When we practice sharing what matters most, we begin to create relationships where we share our whole self and where others do the same. Our humanity becomes present and our degree of polarization lessens.

Bumrungrad Health Briefs Treating Disease with Oxygen Normally, the air we breathe contains only about 20% oxygen. However, with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, patients are able to breathe 100% pure oxygen. When a patient receives oxygen in conjunction with increased atmospheric pressure, this allows blood plasma to carry many times more oxygen to the tissue than is possible under normal atmospheric pressure — which helps in the healing process.
Benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy include: • Promotes and stimulates tissue and capillary growth; when the body develops new capillaries, oxygen therapy helps to improve blood flow to organs that lack sufficient oxygen and blood, thus helping wounds to heal more quickly. • Improves the ability of white blood cells to destroy bacteria • Helps to prevent and fight certain types of infections • Helps to reduce tissue swelling • Can reduce the size of bubbles in tissues and blood vessels, for example, in cases of air or gas embolism The medical community has currently adopted the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in a wide variety of cases. For example, it has been used to help improve the quality of life for patients with cancer, for patients with brain dysfunction, for those with chronic fatigue syndrome, as well as for those suffering from sports injuries. With regard to the procedure itself, before a patient undergoes hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the doctor will examine the patient's physical condition and administer a chest x-ray in order to ensure the patient's safety and prevent any possible complications. The procedure can then be carried out as follows:
• Clothing will be provided for the patient to change into. • The patient will lie on a stretcher that slides into the hyperbaric chamber.
• A physician or nursing professional will release 100% pure oxygen, filling the chamber, and will gradually increase the oxygen pressure to greater than normal. The patient may experience some mild ear popping or ringing at the start. The attending physician or nurse will monitor the patient continuously and will be able to communicate with the patient at any time during the procedure via a speaker attached to the chamber. • The patient will be able to adjust their posture or position so that they are comfortable and relaxed throughout the procedure. They may choose to watch television or simply to sleep and rest while the procedure is taking place. • The therapy session will last about 60-90 minutes. The number of HBOT treatments the patient will need depends on the purpose of the treatment and how well the patient responds to the therapy. • Once the session is complete, the physician or nurse will slowly depressurize the chamber to normal atmospheric pressure, and will then help the patient out of the chamber.
Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok is home to over 1,300 doctors and surgeons providing quality in-patient and out-patient care in state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and intensive care facilities. Founded in 1980, Bumrungrad today serves over 1.1 million patients each year, including 520,000 international patients, who have access to comprehensive support in more than 20 languages. Along with its internationallycertified lab and pharmacy, advanced imaging, and 24-hour emergency care, Bumrungrad has 55 specialty centers — including the New Life Healthy Aging Clinic, a dedicated geriatric clinic supported by specialists in heart and cancer care, bone and digestive health, and neurology and ophthalmology.
• For outpatient cases, the patient can then change back into their clothes and return home without the need for an overnight stay in the hospital.
