n 1989 author and self-help guru Stephen R. Covey wrote a book called The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The book was hugely successful selling over 25 million copies worldwide and becoming one of the bestselling non-fiction books in history. The audio version was the first audio book in the United States to sell over 1 million copies. U.S. President Bill Clinton invited Covey to Camp David to counsel him on how to integrate the book into his presidency. In the last decade, our understanding of the neurology of habit formation has been transformed and inside this issue we look at habits, how to break the bad ones and how to implement the good ones. Be proactive (Covey’s #1 Habit) and turn to page 38 to begin your transformation.
Polo is a game for technicians, tacticians, and spirited fighters. Players who cannot intuitively discern the flow of the game and keep their eye on well positioned teammates can hardly expect to make it even to average-player-level. On April 21st in front of the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort the 9th Asian Beach Polo Championship took place and those in attendance were treated to excellent polo play from both the Malaysian and Thai teams who participated. Besides Polo there was horse racing, barrel racing, a fashion show on horseback and a fabulous evening cocktail party. It’s one of the highlights of the Hua Hin social scene and shouldn’t have been missed. In case you did however we take you to both the daytime and night time festivities, that’s on page 70.
Founded in 2005, the 2018 Top of the Gulf Regatta Presented by Ocean Marina took place from the 27th of April to the 1st of May. Owned and organised by Ocean Property, the regatta is hosted by Ocean Marina Yacht Club. The regatta is the largest multi-class sailing event of its kind in Asia with competitors coming from as far afield as Australia, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the UK, to name just a few of the more than 25 participating countries. Although the weather could have been better for the spectators, it gave the sailors a taste of all if had to offer, rain, clouds, wind, no wind and occasional sunshine. Fish out your deck shoes and join us aboard on page 52.

Steve Ayling's 50th Should you happened to have been at the Marriott Hua Hin Resort on May 12th you might have thought you had time warped to Halloween 2018. The reason for that strange thought would be seeing Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Wonder Woman along with Thor and 70’s porn star Ron Jeremy plus over 100 others all heading into the Marriott’s Ballroom. It wasn’t Halloween drawing everyone in but the 50th birthday celebration for well-known Hua Hin Property Developer Steve Ayling. Thrown by Jenny Ayling, Steve’s wife, the celebration had the central theme of coming as a character from your favorite movie. The party, which has been described as off the charts and one of the most epic party’s ever by several of the guests who attended, featured an abundance of great food, excellent music, quality libations and warm friendships. It was a truly great night and all of us at HOT Magazine wish Steve a terrific year ahead!

refined Kyoto style of Japanese cuisine known as ‘Kyo-ryori.’ Over the weekend of May 11 to 13 the InterContinental once again was home to outstanding cuisine when they brought in Thomas Bühner, a 3 star Michelin chef from Germany. Bühner has been one of Germany’s and indeed one of Europe’s top chefs for more than two decades. He was awarded his first Michelin star in 1996 while at famed La Table restaurant in Dortmund, with another star following in 1998. In 2006,
he was voted Gault Millau’s Chef of the Year. That same year he established what has since become a preeminent venue in Germany, Osnabrück’s La Vie restaurant, which in 2010 was recognised as a Les Grandes Tables du Monde. More accolades came to Chef Thomas in 2009 via Relais & Chateaux, which designated him a Grand Chef. By 2011, he had been honoured with his third Michelin star. Chef Thomas’s approach to cuisine emphasises a skilful teasing out of each ingredient’s natural flavours, allowing food characteristics, whether subtle or intense, to emerge to delightful effect. That approach was certainly seen in the menu he had prepared for his Hua Hin guests and in the French wines that were paired with each course. The many courses included “Marinated cod covered with sliced
Australian wagyu beef, Octopus cooked with kimchi and wild boar emulsion, breast of pigeon served with smoked juniper and caramelized sweet potato and Roebuck venison served with red cabbage gel. For desert guests were treated to Smoked banana, pecan nut and tamarind. According to Michael Janssen, General Manager InterContinental Hua Hin Resort, “It’s a great pleasure to welcome Thomas Bühner for our first Michelin-starred chef event of the year. Thomas is well known for creating unforgettable dining experiences, and
dining guests can be certain they’ll enjoy an evening of outstanding cuisine and genuine conviviality.” Although the meals price was not for those “light in the pocket” it was an outstanding foray into world class cuisine. here are planes for those who dare to dream, and luckily, we don’t have to go very far to get them – though they do take us very far indeed. Thailand’s reputable MJets company has made a name for itself throughout the entire continent with feats of accomplishments throughout its years of operation, something which has allowed it to excel head and shoulders above the majority of private aviation companies in the world. MJets Is a jet charter company and a Fixed Base Operator (FBO) operating the VIP Jet Terminal at Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport. FBO’s provide services such as fueling, hangarage, tie-down and parking, aircraft charter, aircraft maintenance and similar services for corporate and

hardworking people.
Recently, MJets claimed yet another feat, as it was named the most accomplished private jet handler in the Asia Pacific Region for the third year in a row, cementing its reputation as a company of serious ambitions.
“Hard work and dedication of staff is the key to MJets’ top rating. “Our facilities are modest but functional, and what really makes the difference is the high quality of human services,” Navaraj said.
Additionally, the company became amongst the fifteen best Fixed Based Operators in the world after it was voted so during a survey that lasted throughout the year. The distinction was awarded by Aviation International News, a publication about aviation based in the United States. The chairman of the company, Mr. Jaiyavat Navaraj, said the progress was due to the many hours of dedication taken on by his group of
He also added that “the stature MJets has earned can also be taken as a pride for Thailand’s aviation industry which is still striving for global recognition” – in itself a remarkable feat, considering Thailand’s high standard when it comes to serving the aviation industry, both domestically, regionally and internationally. The survey conducted by the Aviation International News asked an array of personnel, from pilots and dispatchers to customers, asking each to value the company in various

facets. The five were passenger amenities, line service, pilot amenities, facilities and customer representatives. The Aviation International News said that there are about 4,500 FixedBase Operation around the world and that out of all of those – the majority of which are in the United States – MJETS ranked at an impressive 6th place outside the north American continent. The Fixed-Base Operator facility handled by MJets is the largest and most well equipped across the whole of the region and Asia. This was a sign of pleasure for the company chairman, who had this to say about the company's success: “The top rating is a validation of
the continuation of our sustainable quality services, the attention to detail which users of our facilities have come to expect from us,’’ said Navaraj. From its Don Mueang base in the northern outskirts of Bangkok, the company has operated more and more planes every year, with the fleet increasing by almost ten percent last year in comparison to 2016. The Jet Charter Company, which was founded by the CEO of Minor Group International William E. “Bill” Heinecke, operates the most advanced and well-equipped private jets in today's industry, with a fleet of Gulfstream and Cessna planes that service the region and international destinations. It additionally also operates an air ambulance, one of the
few private jet companies to do so. All in all, it is easy to see why MJETS has built such a reputable base not only in Thailand and Asia, but the world around. It's large array of impeccable services, it's large and dedicated care for luxury travel and the excellent amenities it offers have made it a favourite amongst those who can afford to travel in it. Having served the country since 1995, the charter company continues to amass accolades and punch through ceilings, something which has contributed to its growth and vision forward to a sky-high future.

Inside the World of Private Jets
O
prah Winfrey once said, “It’s great to have a private jet. Anyone who tells you that having your own private jet isn’t great is lying to you.” Billionaires and Rock Stars, that’s who most of us think of traveling in the ultimate luxury of private jets but studies into the who, what, when and where of private jet use reveal some surprising facts. They suggest there's a new private aviation landscape at work, with chartering private jets, not owning them as becoming the new normal for the world's super rich. Certainly, and not surprisingly, the actual ownership of a private jet is a luxury that comes at a very high price. It's only an option for the top percent of ultra high net worth individuals, a classification of people whose assets are worth at least $30 million. More than one in three (35%) of private jet owners are worth more than a jawdropping $500 million, according to the Jet Traveler Report 2018, compiled by Wealth-X and private jet charter company VistaJet. The majority are over 60 and 91% of the group made some or all of their wealth themselves. Their top industry? Finance, banking and investment of course: 19% of private jet owners are associated with the economic sector where astronomical pay checks are the norm.
32
HOT Magazine
According to Rolland Vincent of JETNET iQ, a company that analyzes the global jet market, the sales of private jets currently remain relatively flat. However, that being said, some aircraft manufacturers are flying high with backorders. Gulfstream, who builds the G650, known as the most exclusive private jet available has an order backlog of approximately $11.5 Billion. Just as Uber & Grab have become immensely popular due to their ease of use, jet charter apps and charter websites have caught on with the wealthy elite. PrivateFly and VistaJet are two companies that have hopped on this trend. Thanks to their apps and websites clients can book a flight happening next week, tomorrow or even in the next couple of hours. PrivateFly reports that the fastest time from booking inquiry to takeoff in the first quarter of 2018 was a speedy 1 hour, 14 minutes and 39 seconds.
Geoff Villano, Senior Vice President of Sales and Operations at PrivateFly, recently commented on their clientele saying, “72% of their private jet charter passengers are male, with an average age of 39. That's not a blip: according to the Jet Traveler's report, the majority of private jet travelers are male -- period. The stereotype of a rock star sipping champagne on tap might be the exception, not the rule, but the private jet world is far from inclusive. According to PrivateFly, based in the UK, the London to Paris trip is there most requested route. At approximately 1 hour of flight time, the charter on a Cessna Citation CJ2 will set you back around â‚Ź7,800 or roughly $9,106. In the States in 2017 the most popular route was New York to Washington DC according the Knight Frank’s Wealth Report.
Popular tourist spots Nice, in the south of France, and Las Vegas, in the United States, are also some of the world's most popular private jet destinations. Here in Thailand, according to Titaree Mahavongsnunt of jet charter company Mjets, the most popular domestic destinations are Koh Samui, Chiang Mai and Phuket with the most popular international destinations being Macau, Shanghai, Singapore and Hong Kong. The world of private jet travel touches on some fundamental societal inequalities. It's the realm of the uber rich, and that world is predominantly male. However, reports suggest the experience is becoming (ever so slightly) more accessible through the rise of booking platforms and that you don't need to be quite as inordinately wealthy to charter a private jet.

The Power of Habits
I
n the last decade, our understanding of the neurology of habit formation has been transformed.
the counseling center at Mississippi State University. For most of her life, Mandy had bitten her nails, gnawing them until they bled.
A quiet revolution has upended our concept of the way patterns work within our lives, societies, and organizations. And much of what we have learned has come from studying the simplest of habits — such as why people bite their nails.
Lots of people bite their nails. For chronic nail biters, however, it’s a problem of a different scale.
In the summer of 2006, for instance, a 24-year-old graduate student named Mandy walked into
38
HOT Magazine
Mandy would often bite until her nails pulled away from the skin underneath. Her fingertips were covered with tiny scabs. The end of her fingers had become blunted without nails to protect them and sometimes they tingled or itched, a
sign of nerve injury. The biting habit had damaged her social life. She was so embarrassed around her friends that she kept her hands in her pockets and, on dates, would become preoccupied with balling her fingers into fists. She had tried to stop by painting her nails with foul-tasting polishes or promising herself, starting right now, that she would muster the willpower to quit. But as soon as she began doing homework or watching television, her fingers ended up in her mouth.
The counseling center referred Mandy to a doctoral psychology student who was studying a treatment known as “habit reversal training.” The psychologist was well acquainted with what has become known as the “Golden Rule of Habit Change.” Every habit has three components: a cue (or a trigger for an automatic behavior to start), a routine (the behavior itself) and a reward (which is how our brain learns to remember this pattern for the future.) The Golden Rule of Habit Change
says that the most effective way to shift a habit is to diagnose and retain the old cue and reward, and try to change only the routine. The psychologist knew that changing Mandy’s nail biting habit required inserting a new routine into her life. “What do you feel right before you bring your hand up to your mouth to bite your nails?” he asked her. “There’s a little bit of tension in my fingers,” Mandy said. “It hurts a little bit here, at the edge of the nail.
Sometimes I’ll run my thumb along, looking for hangnails, and when I feel something catch, I’ll bring it up to my mouth then. I’ll go finger by finger, biting all the rough edges. Once I start, it feels like I have to do all of them.” Asking patients to describe what triggers their habitual behavior is called awareness training, and it’s the first step in habit reversal training. The tension that Mandy felt in her nails cued her nail biting habit.

39
“Most people’s habits have occurred for so long they don’t pay attention to what causes it anymore,” said Brad Dufrene, who treated Mandy. “I’ve had stutterers come in, and I’ll ask them which words or situations trigger their stuttering, and they won’t know because they stopped noticing so long ago.” Next, the therapist asked Mandy to describe why she bit her nails. At first, she had trouble coming up with reasons. As they talked, though, it became clearer that she bit when she was bored. The therapist put her in some typical situations, such as watching television and doing homework, and she started nibbling. When she had worked through all of the nails, she felt a brief sense of completeness, she said. That was the habit’s reward: a physical stimulation she had come to crave. At the end of their first session, the therapist sent Mandy home with an assignment: Carry around an index card, and each time you feel the cue — a tension in your fingertips —
40

make a checkmark on the card. She came back a week later with 28 checks. She was, by that point, acutely aware of the sensations that preceded her habit. She knew how many times it occurred during class or while watching television. Then the therapist taught Mandy what is known as a “competing response.” Whenever she felt that tension in her fingertips, he told her, she should immediately put her hands in her pockets or under her legs, or grip a pencil or something else that made it impossible to put her fingers in her mouth. Then Mandy was to search for something that would provide a quick physical stimulation — such as rubbing her arm or rapping her knuckles on a desk — anything that would produce a physical response. It was the Golden Rule: The cues and rewards stayed the same. Only the routine changed. They practiced in the therapist’s office for about half and hour and
Mandy was sent home with a new assignment: Continue with the index card, but make a check when you feel the tension in your fingertips and a hash mark when you successfully override the habit. A week later, Mandy had bitten her nails only three times and had used the competing response seven times. She rewarded herself with a manicure but kept using the note cards. After a month, the nail biting habit was gone. The competing routines had become automatic. One habit had replaced another. “It seems ridiculously simple, but once you’re aware of how your habit works, once you recognize the cues and rewards, you’re halfway to changing it,” Nathan Azrin, one of the developers of habit reversal training, told me. “It seems like it should be more complex. The truth is, the brain can be reprogrammed. You just have to be deliberate about it.”
Today, habit reversal therapy is used to treat verbal and physical tics, depression, smoking, gambling problems, anxiety, bedwetting, procrastination, obsessivecompulsive disorders, and other behavioral problems. And its techniques lay bare one of the fundamental principles of habits: Often, we don’t really understand the cravings driving our behaviors until we look for them. Mandy never realized that a craving for physical stimulation was causing her nail biting, but once she dissected the habit, it became easy to find a new routine that provided the same reward.
Say you want to stop snacking at work. Is the reward you’re seeking to satisfy your hunger? Or is it to interrupt boredom? If you snack for a brief release, you can easily find another routine, such as taking a quick walk, or giving yourself three minutes on the Internet, that provides the same interruption without adding to your waistline. If you want to stop smoking, ask yourself: Do you do it because you love nicotine, or because it provides a burst of stimulation, a structure to your day, or a way to socialize? If you smoke because you need stimulation, studies indicate that some caffeine in the afternoon can increase the odds you’ll quit. More than three dozen studies of former smokers have found that identifying the cues and rewards they associate with cigarettes, and then choosing new routines that provide similar payoffs— a piece of Nicorette, a quick series of pushups, or simply taking a few minutes to stretch and relax — makes it more likely they will quit.
If you identify the cues and rewards, you can change the routine. Ok, now that you have the tools to take care of your bad habits, let’s start some new ones. History has shown that even the tiniest of habits can spur major changes in your life, especially habits known as “Keystone” habits. Keystone habits lead to the development of multiple good habits. They start a chain effect in your life that produces a number of positive outcomes. For example, say that your keystone habit is to sleep 8 hours every night. Your initial goal is to get more sleep. But this habit can also lead to positive, unintended outcomes like:
HOT Magazine

• Becoming more productive each day • Reducing the consumption of junk food before daytime • Having more time to exercise • Improved communications with your spouse because you're not cranky At first you wanted more sleep, but this keystone habit generated a number of additional habits. The development of keystone habits can become a critical part of your personal development journey because you don’t have to change dozens of habits to get to your goals, you only have to change a few keystone habits that will have a ripple effect on your outcomes. A perfect example is a daily exercise habit. Let's say you want to start exercising 60 minutes a day. This one habit can lead to other great habits such as eating healthy foods, avoiding junk food and becoming more efficient at work because you need that extra hour to work out. That one exercise habit can form major breakthroughs in other areas of your life. This particular example really resonates with me because

I found that by getting in better physical shape it led to many positive outcomes including an increase in self-confidence. Had I not started my gym habit I wouldn’t have had the self confidence to step out of my comfort zone and move half way around the world. A move that was the best thing I have ever done for myself. Other keystone habits include; 1. Eliminate negative self-talk. Let's say you want to eliminate negative self-talk. This can have a positive effect in many areas of your life. When you stop talking negative, you start talking positive. When you start talking positive, you start thinking positive then positive things start to happen to you. 2. Eliminate the perfectionist mindset. Eliminating the 'perfectionist mindset' helps you open up and experience new things. When you’re a perfectionist you tend to not do things out of fear of failure. This makes it difficult to move forward with your dreams and aspirations. Once you stop this habit, it allows you to explore life more and you start taking action towards what
you really want. This particular keystone habit reminds me of an interview I once read from a successful business executive who recounted that every night at the dinner table, when she was growing up, she and her brothers would have to tell their parents one thing that they failed at that day. It was a requirement and her parents rewarded her for her failures. With no fear of failure, she was able to try, try and try again until she succeeded at a very high business level. 3. Eliminate the excuse habit. Things that you want in life won’t fall into your lap. You have to stop making excuses in order to get the things you want out of life. Once you stop this habit, it affects other aspects of life because you stop making excuses for a lack of results. This causes a major breakthrough because you'll focus on achieving positive outcomes. 4. Start saving money. By saving money you will have emergency funds for the unforeseen. This can often lead to a more moneyconscious lifestyle for you and your family.
By saving money you'll pay closer attention to the trivial purchases you're making in life. Often this will reduce the amount of clutter in your life, another unintended positive outcome. Keystone habits work because they focus on making a dynamic change in your life. They produce a trickle-down effect. Soon you will notice more opportunities for selfimprovement from the keystone habits that you're forming. Success with a keystone habit happens when you take that first step. Right now, make a list of all the habits you'd like to develop. Pay close attention to the ones that can have a ripple-effect in your life. You'd be surprised at how this
small change can generate many positive outcomes. And the good news is that you can start small. For example, if you are used to waking up at 7 am, waking up at 5 am is a big leap so instead set your alarm for 06:45 because 15 minutes is doable. As you get more accustomed to waking up early set the alarm another 15 minutes earlier. Eventually, over the course of a week or two, you will reach your two hour goal. Of course, you’ll also need to start going to bed earlier. That’s something you can also do gradually as you progress.
having more time to exercise, prepare healthier meals, read, or simply plan your day. Almost all successful people are that way because of the positive personal habits they have mastered. Start with small changes that are easy to accomplish and you’ll be amazed at the results you’ll achieve in short order.
You really don’t know how big a small change can be because it snowballs so quickly. By getting up earlier you’ll have the benefit of

Right in the middle of the historical centre of Hua Hin, sandwiched between old timber finger wharves and overlooking its own golden beach – Brasserie de Paris has so much to offer and in our humble view, worth regular visits!

Fabian, a qualified Chef with experience in Michelin star restaurants in London and Barcelona, is now in charge of continuing Brasserie de Paris’s story. But not kitchen bound - Fabian is very much involved in greeting guests and overviewing service,
while still working closely with his kitchen team to ensure the menu is delivered to his exacting standards. Twenty Five year anniversary celebrations are a foot for later in the year with Fabian firmly in charge of planning, and what a milestone to celebrate! Our visit was for dinner, and what a view to be greeted by as we entered the upstairs dining room – floor to ceiling ocean views with the sea taking on a soft blue hue thanks to the setting suns fading light. Attentive staff welcomed and seat us – a balcony table with direct views over the beach now being bathed in evening colours. Open to the evening breeze coming off the ocean – what a romantic setting! Our group started with a selection of starters - Swordfish ceviche with hints of Thai spice, Smoked Eel on sesame toast, and a light and airy puff pastry topped with an Olive tapenade. The Eel still moist with a gentle smoked character, and the swordfish with gentle Thai heat. A tasty intro to the evening.
Next up, entrees, starting with La Brasserie’s famous Crab with lobster sauce. Small crab shells filled with crab meat, a delicate blend of herbs, grilled gently with cheese and accompanied by a well-balanced lobster sauce. Next sweet bread of Veal served atop a watercress puree and dressed with a curry infused oil. Our third choice was from the regularly changing blackboard menu, a carpaccio of Swordfish with a lemon herb dressing. The lemon really setting off the delicate flavours of the fish. We had read on the restaurant’s website that they had been voted Best Beef in Hua Hin, so we had to test this out. We chose the New Zealand Tenderloin of beef which was cooked perfectly and served with a punchy pepper sauce which was very much to my liking. To top it off, beautifully turned vegetables and Belgium (not French) Fries, as Fabian proudly announced on their arrival.
The verdict – yes, this was the best steak I have had over the last nearly three years in Thailand. Without a doubt! Others in our party certainly gave it the thumbs up as well. From the blackboard menu came a Black Cod wrapped in wafer thin slices of zucchini, steamed we assume, and accompanied by a carrot mash and saffron sauce. The lime wedges on the side of the plate when squeezed over the saffron sauce really set this off and served as the perfect accompaniment for the delicate cod. Cajun chicken was the final main dish. A fillet of chicken generously coated with Cajun spices, grilled and matched with mango salsa and saffron potatoes. Another flavour filled plate!

Chef Owner Fabian twisted our arms when he started describing the desserts. He made them all sound so enticing, so we yielded to his charms and tasted their Pecan Pie with maple syrup and caramel cream. The Crème Brulees had its own twist as it was topped with a strawberry crust. The winning vote in the dessert department had to go to Praline Maison, a creamy and flavour full cocoa sorbet with the crunchy character that praline infuses. Brasserie de Paris is situated at 3 Naresdamri Road in central Hua Hin and opens for breakfast daily from 10 am with a choice of breakfast sets for around 250 baht. Their lunch menu offers Panini, sandwiches and salads all served in their upstairs al fresco dining room overlooking the beach. The dinner menu is well rounded, and as mentioned, a regularly changing blackboard menu expands your choices. If it gets too hard to make decisions, there are two Set Menu options.
For 795 baht a choice between two entrees, a choice of two mains plus your choice of dessert. Step it up to 995, and you have a choice between two entrees, and either rock lobster or the New Zealand tenderloin of Beef for main, and your choice of dessert. Three courses for 795 or 995 baht and if the quality we experienced during our visit is anything to go by, that’s excellent value. Wines are from a blackboard menu with a limited number of white and red wines from Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy and Argentina. An astute selection of wines, by our assessment. In keeping with Fabian’s desire to continue the Brasserie de Paris legacy, there are plans a foot for cocktail parties, functions or just evening drinks on the beach immediately in front of the restaurant. Keep an eye on the website of contact Fabian directly on 092 434 7037 or the restaurant on 032 510 801. We discovered that Fabian is a football (soccer) enthusiast, so he is converting the downstairs area that is usually a Wine Shop into a street level bar. Brasserie de Paris will have the World Cup screening from 14th June to 15th July in this street level area so others football devotees can join him for drinks and snacks while cheering on their country’s team. Normal restaurant operations will continue upstairs! By Michael Cullen

Bumrungrad Health Briefs 5 Benefits of a month without alcohol Healthier living isn’t about one thing, it’s about many things — regular exercise, proper nutrition and weight control, preventive health screenings and check-ups, to name a few. If you’re more than an occasional drinker, it’s well worth considering an alcohol-free break. Here are five valuable health benefits of a month without alcohol.
1. You’ll sleep better Science clearly disproves the myth that alcohol makes falling asleep easier. The truth is, alcohol disrupts the normal sleep cycle by extending your time in less-restful rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, leaving you still feeling tired even after a full night’s sleep. After the first few nights of abstinence adjustment, you will spend more time in deep (non-REM) sleep and wake up feeling more rested and refreshed.
2. Your skin will improve Alcohol lowers the skin’s anti-oxidant defenses, leaving it more vulnerable to damage from the sun, chemicals, pollution and cigarette smoke. And its diuretic properties weaken your body’s ability to absorb water and stay hydrated. Once alcohol is removed from the equation, skin conditions such as dandruff and dermatitis can improve as hydration returns toward normal, giving your skin a healthier-looking glow.
3. You’ll smell better Alcohol is toxic, so the body breaks it down and excretes it as quickly as possible. When you drink more than the liver can handle, the body releases much of the excess alcohol through

one’s breath, pores, and sweat with a foul-smelling odor. The good news is, abstaining from alcohol enables bodily functions to return to normal. Your “dry” month will be alcohol odor-free, too. Don’t surprise if people notice your more pleasant body scent and less pungent perspiration.
4. You’ll be sharper and more productive During your alcohol-free month, your mind will be sharper and you’ll be more productive. If alcohol is a current fixture of your Friday and Saturday nights, a sober month will enable you to spend former weekend ‘recovery” days are pursuing more active, meaningful interests. And instead of spending your weekend mornings nursing hangovers, you’ll awaken with more energy and fewer regrets.
5. Your liver will thank you The most important beneficiary of going alcohol-free will probably be your liver, the critical organ responsible for processing and breaking down all food and drink (alcohol included) and for filtering out toxins. When these processes become impaired from alcohol’s damaging effects, fat begins to build up around the liver and eventually leads to fatty liver, an indicator of liver disease. hepatitis, fibrosis and cirrhosis. Fortunately, the liver is a regenerative organ which, given sufficient time and proper treatment, can reverse damage and repair itself — in just 30 alcoholfree days, it’s possible to reduce your liver fat by as much as 15%.

hat a great opportunity - competition sailing to help hone skills, meld teams and test vessels – and just three months before the Asian Games happening in Jakarta this August. That’s precisely what the 2018 Top of the Gulf Regatta Presented by Ocean Marina provided. Held off Jomtien Pattaya from 27th April to 1st May 2018, the regatta is the largest multi-class sailing event of its kind in Asia with competitors

coming from as far afield as Australia, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the UK, to name just a few of the more than 25 participating countries. Because the 2018 Top of the Gulf Regatta represented such an ideal lead up to this year’s Asian Games, many countries sent their national teams and Olympic sailors to compete, including Thailand who had their full national sailing squad racing in preparation for the regional championships. Ocean Marina Yacht Club is the
regatta's permanent home and as South East Asia's largest marina facility provides a convenient and safe base for a regatta of this size and diversity. Up to 12 classes of boats participated this year including keelboats, multihulls, One-Design Platus competing for the Platu Coronation Cup, a series of dinghy classes, Optimists competing in the Thailand Optimist National Championships, and for the second consecutive year the IOM Class of radio controlled boats.
Founded in 2005, the regatta is owned and organised by Ocean Property and hosted by Ocean Marina Yacht Club with support from the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, Royal Thai Navy, Royal Varuna Yacht Club and Pattaya City. The regatta saw a strong line-up of international and Thai sailors, with more than 200 boats and over 600 sailors in total this year. Top of the Gulf Regatta organisers have always viewed sailing as a sport for all, and since year one
have supported youth sailing with Optimist (8 to 15 years) and dinghy (7 to 12 years) classes included in the regatta. As the award-winning regatta enters it's 14th edition, organisers hosted a demonstration of the S\V14. A boat built in Thailand and designed primarily to be sailed by people with disabilities. This initiative by Disabled Sailing Thailand hopes to give people with disabilities the opportunity to sail and perhaps in the future, the chance to compete at international level including the
Paralympics. Organisers believe making the sport more accessible is key to growing sailing in the country. The 2018 Top of the Gulf Regatta has a reputation for delivering close and competitive racing, and this year the weather made the competition even tougher. Over the four days of the regatta, sailors experienced everything from moments of becalm to 25 knot squalls, thunder and lightning, and blue skies indicative of sailing in the tropics.

Results by Class Keelboats, Class 1: IRC 1 competition former Optimist World Champion Noppakao Poonpat has driven the THA72 expertly winning five of the six races contended. An excellent result for her first time helming a boat of this size and calibre. The competition was tough with TP52 Ark 323 crewed by an allChinese team coming a close second. Keelboats, Class 2: IRC 2, saw David Dimmock and crew on the Club Swan 42 Loco (USA) won the class with one race to spare, ahead of Gary Baguley's El Coyote (AUS) in second. Jean Rheault's Souay1 (CAN) whose results, particularly in the second half of the series, saw them slide into third place overall. Cruising Class boats had a little more action than expected this week, with some windward/leewards replacing their “traditional long distance series of races, and the sailors seem happy with the change. A single race on the final day brought their series tally to five. The all-Japanese crew on Team Spray took the win by a single point from Pote Suyasinto's all-Thai team on Le Vent. Two points further back was Tim McMahon's Sail Quest Hi Jinks in third. One-Design Platu Class saw some exceptionally close racing during the week with no boat dominating. Ithinai Yingsiri's Thai team on Pine-Pacific were in the running throughout, but they had to settle for second overall, ahead of Chris Way's Easy Tiger III (AUS) in third. Wins in the final two races of the series saw Kirati Assakul and his crew on the Crowther 42, Sonic, defend their Ocean Multihulls title from newcomer Dominique Demachy who sailed his KL 28 Edenko well.
Dinghy Classes (9a, 9b, 10) Keerati Bualong, Thailand's top Laser sailor and two-time Olympian won Class 9a with a masterful showing. Not always leading from start to finish, having to come from behind at times and mastering the mixed bag of conditions, he finished with a clean sheet – six wins from six races. Second and third was a much closer affair with Chusitt Punjamala putting together a string of second places in the last two days to place second overall, three points ahead of Jarunpong Meeyusamsen in third.

Having led from Race 1, Navee Thamsoontorn/ Nut Butmarasri (470) held on to take the title despite two third places on the final day. Suthida Poonpat/ Narisa Satta (470) had an excellent last day with a 2,1 scoreline tying them on points with Suthon Yampinid/ Kittipoon Kumjorn (420). However, after count-back, Suthon Yampinid/ Kittipoon Kumjorn were awarded second place.
Thailand Optimist National Championships The Optimist entries were divided into two fleets – Gold and Silver fleets with a total of five races in the series. A hard last day for Hong Kong hopeful Duncan Gregor in the Gold Fleet saw him finish fifth overall, and the top international youngster. Having had a slow start to his competition, M.L. Weka Bhanubandh put in some solid performances to finish second overall and top sailor Under 12 (years of age), with Patihan Vorrasart in third. Yoth Srimanchanda comfortably won in the Silver Fleet with Attasuk Boontawee's two bullets on the final day enough for him to sneak into second ahead of Krithphet Suwannarai in third.

The Coronation Cup & The Platu 25
I
Small but special, the Platu 25 was born, and Mcdell Marine of New Zealand was chosen for the build. On 19th March 1995, 24 Platu's arrived in Thailand.
The boat was named after a small fish which is a delicacy here in Thailand. ‘Pla’ is Thai for fish and ‘Tu’ is the type of fish.
In the following year, 1996, the first Platu 25 One-Design Regatta known as the Coronation Cup was held off the coast of Hua Hin. Hua Hin was explicitly chosen as the location for the Coronation Cup in honour of Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej, an exceptional sailor and accomplished boat designer.
n the early 1990’s a group of Thai businessmen wanted to build a Marina in Hua Hin on the West Coast of the Gulf of Thailand and run a fleet of One-Design boats. They asked Bruce Farr, an internationally accomplished and sought-after yacht designer, to create a One-Design yacht uniquely suited to the waters in the Gulf of Thailand.

here are some hotels which just cater to every one of the needs of a traveler, businessman, wedding goer or party reveler. While keeping the luxury and the convenience intact, some places in Bangkok make it a very pleasant experience to turn to one hotel for any of such needs. This month, HOT Magazine had the pleasure of staying at a hotel that has all such properties: the Amara Bangkok.
Lobby
Located in the exciting Silom area of Bangkok, the Amara Bangkok has five types of room, the first of which is the Deluxe Room. The Deluxe Rooms are composed in light of the visitor's definitive practicality. Every room is completely furnished with a 32-inch TV, an individual safe, an espresso and tea making machine and rapid web access to maintain online connectivity all day. The advantage of the deluxe rooms is that they’re for day explorers who don't trade off comfort for usefulness and strive to make use of the impeccable facilities the hotel has to offer.

The six extravagant Cabana Rooms offer direct access to two outside Jacuzzi’s with a staggering perspective of the city, making them the ideal haven to be at bliss and revive one’s strengths without having to leave the capital.
Next come the refined Executive Rooms, intended for guest’s most comforting stay, giving them their very own space to work in ease and an environment free of nuisance. Situated on the higher floors with marvelous perspectives of Bangkok city, they are perfect for current business voyagers who look for the balance between upscale and practical. Particularly customized with careful care are the Club Rooms.

These room are a sumptuous sanctuary combining beauty and accommodation. They offer the absolute best for every visitor with access to the Club Lounge. Each Club Room has an extraordinary mood, a 42-inch level screen TV, and extravagant bath and comfort throughout the entire space. Club Room visitors are additionally spoiled with a delicious breakfast, morning and evening coffee breaks, and evening drinks to unwind and escape from the stress of a heavy day.
Finally, the Amara offers a onebedroom suite which is spacious at 72 square meters. All three spaces, bedroom, lounge & bathroom are well appointed. This is the room we had the pleasure of staying in and the only negative thing I can say about it is that there is only one of these room types in the hotel, so you need to book it early. But we recommend you do so as it’s a luxurious space to reside in. Elements is the Amara’s den to feast the entire day, incorporating both indoor and outdoor seating in the open air. The eatery highlights different stations where gourmet specialists show their culinary abilities. It shares the name with its renowned sister eatery at the Amara Singapore, featuring signature dishes from Thailand, and China along with top Western choices and a scrumptious array of Japanese food.
The Amara’s bar at the height of its rooftop is an ideal place from which to watch the sun recede and take in the Bangkok skyline while jiving to cool beats. This amazing bar likewise offers an in vogue line-up of mixed drinks and great bar snacks. P
olo is a game for technicians, tacticians, and spirited fighters. Players who cannot intuitively discern the flow of the game and keep their eye on well positioned teammates can hardly expect to make it even to average-player-level. Long before polo was even heard of in Europe, the fast-paced game was very popular in Asia. British officers, who were stationed in India at the end of the 19th century, picked interest in the game and continued playing it even when they returned home. The first rules of polo were then written down by the Hurlingham Polo Club which was founded in the U.K. in 1876. To this day, these rules are referred to in international polo. From the U.K. the game found its way to the United States where the handicap system was established. The British also took the game to South America where it was picked up with much enthusiasm. The Argentines fell head over heels in love with the game. While Europe fought her wars in the 20th century and paid less attention to polo, the South Americans overtook everyone else in technique and skills to become the undisputed world stars of polo. In Hua Hin we have Mr. Harald Link & Khun NunthineeTanner from their Thai Polo & Equestrian Club along with the InterContinental’s Liptapanlop family to thank for bringing Polo to our Royal Resort beach town as they did once again on April 21st for the 9th Annual Asian Beach Polo Championship. From the very first time it was hosted in 2010 by the InterContinental Resort Hua Hin and B.Grimm, the Beach Polo tournament has been a phenomenal success. It has become an annual event that makes the hot summer season of Hua Hin come alive with celebration. Celebrities, high society & ambassadors with their families, media and the local community all come together for this great day of sport. Special guests included H.E. Mr. Francisco Vaz Patto Ambassador of Portugal to Thailand, Narin Sriprachak, Sasiwimon Dararattanaroj, Patitta Homchan, Tawn Chatchavalvong, Kanokkorn Lamlert, Mark Thawin P Seawtong, Vee Mar, Nunthinee Tanner, Sutheera Utama, Virada Ketkakomol, Patcharat Chairojrat Harrison and Maliwan Prayongphan along with Mister National Thailand Natchanon Singlum & Mister Universe Tourism Thailand Nitat Na Wayo.

The fun filled Saturday started at 12 noon with the gates opening and food and drinks being served as they were all day. The weather couldn’t have been better with sunny blue skies and a light breeze to take away some of the summer’s sizzling heat. The day started with the traditional Grand Horse Parade and Opening Ceremony with Dr. Harald Link giving the opening speech in which he said, “This year is also a special year for B. Grimm Group which carry on a tradition of 140 years of conducting our business in Thailand. We are proud to arrange the Asian Beach Polo tournament which is one of our special activities to reflect the potential of Thailand in hosting an international beach polo event as well as promote Hua Hin and the kingdom among tourists and spectators.“ Mr. Link is Chairman and CEO of B. Grimm, a multinational conglomerate founded in 1878 and based in Bangkok. The company is wholly owned and operated by the Link family with revenues in excess of a billion dollars. After the speeches guests then enjoyed a barrel racing competition, horse racing and a celebrity & VIP filled fashion show on horseback. It was then time for the main event, beach polo pitting Malaysia against Thailand. The enthusiastic audience supported the teams with boundless exaltation Chukka after Chukka. Both Malaysia and Thailand were closely matched but in the end there is always a winner and this year that title went to the Malaysian’s with a score of 7 goals to 5. With the Cup presentation the day time activities came to a close. After several years of hosting the evening party at the InterCon’s BluPort wing, this year it moved back to its roots at the InterContinental hotel’s beach side for the evening cocktail dinner, dance and auction. The reaction from guests who make this a yearly event was that this years evening party was one of the best and it was great to be back at the InterCon’s beachside location.
