With events still on hold due to Covid, and parties just starting to make a comeback, we are pleased to bring you our updated story and interview with former Miss Universe Natalie Glebova. It was in Bangkok, 15 years ago, that Natalia Vladimirovna Glebova, born in Tuapse Russia, was crowned the 53rd Miss Universe. After her year reign, Natalie went on to become an author, publishing her first book “Healthy Happy Beautiful” which turned out to be a major bestseller. The books focus was that for you to be beautiful on the outside, you must first start on the inside and be happy. And to be happy, you must be healthy. Natalie went on to mentor Beauty pageant competitors from around the world, and in 2018 she published “I am Winning, A Guide to Personal Empowerment,” a book that delivers a road map towards stimulating a champion mindset for personal happiness and successful living. Also that year, she partnered with a California attorney and entrepreneur, Dr. Patama Mokaves Dumas, to start a program for high schools and universities called Empowered. the midst of World War Two as payback for Thailand having attacked French Indo-Chinese posts (modernday Vietnam). Later, this renowned city enjoyed rapid expansion as a significant hub in Thailand. Put on your comfortable walking shoes and turn to page 46 as we journey thru magnificent plateaus, weaving hills, and imposing cliffs. Thailand is a boater’s paradise due to its beautiful crystal-clear waters and marvelous islands with endless sandy beaches. Hefty boat taxes are a thing of the past, and the country’s immigration department is making it easier for large yachts with international crews to visit the Kingdom for extended stays. Dig out your boat shoes and turn to page 54 to find out the top 10 places we think your large yacht should visit.

Also this month, we take you to Thailand’s version of the Grand Canyon, located in Ubon Ratchathani, one of the big four of Issan. Ubon Ratchathani was founded In the late eighteenth century during the reign of Taksin the Great. In the twentieth century, French forces marched into the city during

L et’s Meet

Andrew Stocks What is your full name and age? My name is Andrew Stocks, I was born in 1970, and I am just 49 years old, but in a few days, I am 50....... Luckily I can still say 49. What is your current Job Position? I am an Entrepreneur and the director of my companies, but my latest job is the one that is taking most of my time, and it’s called Sunshine International. I am responsible for spreading the brand across Thailand. It’s a very stressful job, but I love it. How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I have lived in Hua Hin for about 13 Years now. The First time I came was way back around 25 years ago. It was really so different in them days, nothing here much and today it has almost everything. What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? I just knew it was a quiet fishing village, and due to the King’s residence being here, I knew it was more high class than all the other tourist areas. What do you like most about your profession? I love to set challenges bigger than my visions and try my best to achieve them, and close to that, I love to see my staff grow as I grow. I love them to achieve new things in their life. What do you like least about your profession? Sometimes it’s very frustrating trying to work with another culture, but I try to understand the culture and the Sabai way of life, but it’s not the way I have been used too. I come from a family who wants everything done yesterday, and that’s so difficult here in Thailand. What do you like most about Hua Hin? Life is much slower here than where I lived in Pattaya before. It has more of a family feeling and so much more peaceful, and most of the tourists here are more normal too.

What is your favorite restaurant, and why? (please don’t promote your own restaurants) My Favourite restaurant is Sizzlers. I love to go to sizzler’s often and eat the salad bar. What do you like to do in your free time and why? On weekends I normally go to a Five Star hotel and relax and not move out of the hotel. I enjoy using the hotel’s facilities like swimming pools and drink a nice relaxing glass of champagne. Early to bed and just relax and enjoy the luxury of the hotel. What would you recommend to new-comers to do in Hua Hin and why? I always recommend people to go to the Anantasila Hotel for lunch because I love the setting so much. It’s a beautiful entrance to the hotel with all the orchids, and the beach is Paradise too! Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? Most people are surprised that I am so normal and not the serious person they thought I was. Many are surprised at how down to earth I am. What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? When I was a kid I used to sell Licorice sweets shaped like shoelaces. I would go to Makro, buy a box of 50 sweets, and stretch each one and then cut them in half and double my money.... I feel bad about that now!

ORI9IN, The First Gourmet Organic Farm In Chiang Mai

T

hose familiar with the Hua Hin dining scene know the name, James Noble. For several years, James and his wife May operated the Boutique Farmer’s restaurant in Pak Nam Pran, offering gastronomic delights every Friday and Saturday evenings along with a Sunday Brunch.

spent several years teaching at Bangkok’s Le Cordon Bleu Dusit Culinary School.

Almost all restaurants have a standard menu that they keep serving month after month or year after year. At Jame’s Boutique Farmer restaurant, the menu was entirely driven by what was available from his own farm and their local cooperative suppliers – on that particular day. Every dining experience at the Boutique Farmer was new and almost always incredibly delectable.

The partnership is grounded on the passion for a sustainable future through food, leveraging the post-COVID quest for better health and wellbeing. This venture of Agro-tourism aims to lead the curve in sustainable retained farming and cooperatives for living and eating well.

Chef Jame’s creative kitchen skills were learned from years spent at 3 Michelin Star restaurants in Europe, before spending four years as Mick Jagger’s (The Rolling Stones) personal Chef on his Caribbean island. He also

James is now off on a new adventure, having partnered with Singapore’s Banyan Tree Group to develop ORI9IN, the first gourmet organic farm in Chiang Mai.

Championing local procurement and sustainably sourced food, ORI9IN is partnering with a network of restaurants and hotels to focus on import substitution, and reduce the carbon footprint without sacrificing flavour. Set on 350 acres of land, ORI9IN is a multi-faceted farm with extensive

facilities. It is committed to land stewardship through biodynamic farming and market distribution of high-quality organic products planted by local farmers. The farm is the brainchild of James and his wife May, having taken their Boutique Farmer’s Pak Nam Pran concept and expanding it in scale. ORI9IN rents out spaces to grow specific ingredients as well as to test and plant overseas products for over 15 top Michelin-star chefs hailing from Thailand’s restaurants and hotels. Families can also rent land for farming, and enjoy the harvest of vegetable and fruit salad, delivered to their home weekly. The farm’s community garden grows a variety of vegetables (Aubergine, Kale, Chillies, Pumpkins, Green Beans, Basil, Lemongrass, Garlic, and Tomatoes). It also provides complimentary vegetable harvesting to villagers daily.

The farm is also home to the world’s very first White Menu dining experience, observing provenance and zero waste. Almost all ingredients come from the farm itself or local cooperatives within a 30 km radius. To achieve a zero-waste kitchen, diners experience an alternative gastronomy of fine dining where ingredients and produce take center stage over price and plate presentation. “Luxury is changing. Fine dining is changing. What people want from the new norm is to know where their food is coming from. They care much more about the process than whether there’s a white cloth on the table. This is the future,” says James. “All guests just write their preferences on a white piece of paper, and they love the surprise factor of seeing what I’m able to come up with between that and when I put the dish in front of them. It’s in the moment, yet incredibly considered.” With the change in seasons, each dish

may never repeat itself. Ingredients dictate the culinary direction and incorporate healthful traditional techniques of solar-baking, 16-hour earth oven roasting, fermenting, sun-drying, pickling, and curing of the food. The farm has created cooperatives in the community and help develop livestock farmers, fishermen, and artisans who contribute to the menu from plates to furniture and food. Examples of a menu focused on creativity, seasonality and surprise are Fig with Tomato Bruschetta & Garlic Flowers, Sweet & Sour Duck Hearts, Sambal Babaganoush Croquettes and Duck Marquez Sausages with Pumpkin Chilli Mash. From the Herbalist Medicine Garden, healing plants such as Turmeric, Ginger, Dok kajon, Echinacea and Gingko can be picked and mixed into bottled drinks as traditional remedies to build immunity. Come October 2020, the ORI9IN farm will be officially opened to the public from 9 am – 6 pm daily, with ticketed

options for different journeys. Located 30-minutes out of Chiangmai, heading towards Phao, guests can enjoy a full day of fun at the farm, the highlight of which is Asia’s largest Maize Maze, and experiencing first-hand the practice behind crop planting and jam factories. Additionally, the spacious Wooden Farm Sala and Lanna House Food Venue will soon welcome MICE groups and Wedding events. James adds, “I really think business as usual needs to change. We should be in business not only for ourselves but also to protect and improve the health and livelihoods of the local community. In my small way, I also hope to inspire people to rethink the way products are grown and prepared. Our children need us to do things differently. We need to farm for the future.”

L et’s Eat, Hua Hin

Trattoria by Andreas

W

ho better to explain what a Trattoria is then Andreas Bonifacio, the Chef Patron of one Hua Hin’s newest eating establishments Trattoria by Andreas. For the last five years, Andreas has been at the helm of the highly acclaimed Andreas Italian Restaurant & Grill, but that chapter of his life has finished.

26

HOT Magazine

Trattoria by Andreas is his focus now, and as he describes it, Trattoria’s are family-run, relaxed, and often cosy eateries, typically serving food of the region they are located. For this restaurant, Andreas is presenting food from his home region of Friuli Venezia Giulia in north-eastern Italy, and more broadly, quality Italian cuisine. Unlike more formal ristorante, you

can just drop in for a Pizza, washed down by a refreshing drink at a Trattoria, or linger with family and friends for a more expansive food journey. The menu at Trattoria by Andreas offers around ten choices each for Starters, Pasta, Mains, and Pizza. Of course, there are some classic desserts and a comprehensive wine list starting with very reasonably priced bottles to that something special.

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMENDED Our food journey begins with Assortimento di Antipasti Trattoria. A mixed Starter selection including melt in your mouth Italian cold cuts, tomato and burrata salad, and a plump Arancini filled with saffron flavoured rice and a centre of melting gooey cheese. The selection of fresh breads served to the table added to our tasting. This mixed Antipasti plate would be an excellent choice for two or three

people to share. The pasta menu introduced us to a couple of new tastes in the dish Cavatelli Fatti in Casa Con Anduja, Vongole e Zucchini. Eggless homemade Cavatelli pasta with clams and zucchini in a creamy sauce flavoured by a spicy salami paste called Anduja. The gentle heat this Calabrese Salame brought to the dish was a pleasing

surprise. The mouth-sized pieces of fried eggplant in the Rigatoni al pesto alla Siciliana e Melanzane provided a tasty counter to the herbaceous pesto of basil, tomato, and almonds. The delicious pillowy pork-filled Tortellini with cream and ham (Tortellini di Carne alla Panna e Prosciutto) rounded out our Pasta journey.

Mains range from quality Australian Black Angus beef dishes, classic Veal Ossobuco, wild-caught sea bass filets, organic Tasmanian salmon, Norwegian cod, and a risotto with porcini mushrooms. On Andreas suggestion, we tried the Korobuta pork chop. A new breed developed in Thailand and originating from the Black Berkshire pig strain. This premium quality pork is produced in the style of Japanese Kurobuta. The juicy chop straight from the grill was served simply with roasted turned vegetables. This was pork excellence. For the sweet tooth, there were four options, including Panna Cotta with a raspberry sauce, Apple and Almond Tart with vanilla sauce, and a Home Baked Cheesecake. All very tempting though we had to have the Traditional Italian Tiramisu. Soft sponge, espresso dipped ladyfingers, in layers with creamy mascarpone and a generous dusting of cocoa. An excellent way to finish the meal. People who frequented Andreas Italian Restaurant & Grill would know that he offered special dishes when premium delicacies came into season. White asparagus, or new season truffle for example, or perhaps some fresh Phuket lobsters. Andreas assured us, his Trattoria will continue this practice, so check what Specials might be available. Additionally, if looking to organise a celebration, check with the restaurant to see what can be arranged. The restaurant offers, in essence, three seating areas. An extended covered open-air front deck where you can watch the Pizza come and go from the wood-fired oven. A ground floor airconditioned room, or ascend the creaking stairs to a larger airconditioned dining area with views over the front deck. DĂŠcor is relaxed, with warm tones, and some funky European art adding brightness and colour to the walls.

A Conversation With Former Miss Universe Natalie Glebova -Redux

N

atalia Vladimirovna Glebova was born in Tuapse Russia, a seaport situated on the northeast shore of the Black Sea. Here, she studied classical piano and graduated from a professional musical school at the age of 12. She also won various regional rhythmic gymnastics championships.

As Miss Universe, Natalie traveled extensively and immersed herself in a campaign to increase awareness of HIV and AIDS. She attended the G8 Summit in New York City on August 11, 2005, which reflected on ending poverty in underdeveloped regions and ending gang activity and drug cartels in Colombia.

At the age of 13 she and her family moved to Ontario Canada. Growing up, Glebova worked as a model and attended Ryerson University in Toronto where she received her Bachelor of Commerce in Information Technology Management and Marketing. She has also worked as a motivational speaker for grade school and high school students.

In 2007, after her year as Miss Universe ended, she published her first book, “Healthy Happy Beautiful” and it turned out to be a major best seller. In 2018 Natalie published “I am Wining, A Guide to Personal Empowerment” which delivers a road map towards stimulating a champion mindset for personal happiness and successful living. Sharing her knowledge, she offers training to women competing in National and International Beauty Pageants and she is an accomplished motivational speaker. Natalie is married to Dean Kelly and In April of 2016, she gave birth to their daughter Maya.

In 2002, for the first time, she watched the Miss Universe Contest on television and afterwards her life was never the same. In 2004, Glebova attempted to win the Miss Universe Canada pageant where she placed as 3rd runner-up. Glebova competed again in January 2005, and won the title. Glebova competed in the Miss Universe pageant held in Bangkok, Thailand in June 2005, where she became the fourth Canadian in ten years to make the initial cut of semi-finalists. She competed in the evening gown and swimsuit competitions, advancing to the top five where she competed in the final interview round. Throughout the contest, Glebova gave the traditional Thai greeting known as a “Wai” on every appearance which helped her win over Thai audiences and judges. At the conclusion of the pageant, Glebova was crowned Miss Universe 2005.

HOT Magazine had the distinct pleasure of catching up with Natalie in between her busy schedule. HM: Natalie, you were born in Tuapse, Russia where you lived until

you immigrated to Canada at the age of 13 with your parents. What memories do you have of those early years and during that formative period were there any specific people or events that set you on the path to where you are today? NG: My memories from childhood are happy ones – living in a small town on the coast of the Black Sea, going to the beach in the summer, and spending a lot of time with my grandparents at their house. My parents always wanted a better future for us, and to see me grow up in a more secure country (at the time we were leaving, the communist regime just ended so there was a lot of uncertainty). They packed a few bags, sold everything else and came to Canada where we started a brand new life. My parents really inspire me to this day, with their perseverance, vision, and fearlessness to do everything they can for their daughter. It was not easy the first few years as immigrants in a new country, but they came through the tough part with flying colors and gave me everything I needed – secure life, education, and happy life.

HM: Miss Universe, there isn’t a bigger beauty pageant on the planet than that. Had you entered other pageants and at what age did you set your sights on the big prize? NG: I hadn’t heard about Miss Universe pageant until I was in my early 20’s and the first pageant I ever saw on TV was Miss Universe 2002 where Oxana Federova from Russia took the crown. That pageant really inspired me to give it a shot for Miss Canada. I entered online, then was invited for an interview, got accepted to the local pageant for my province, and later selected as one of the candidates for Miss

HOT Magazine

Canada. I was 22 when I entered this pageant. My first try for the title got me to the top 5, and fell just short of winning. So the next year, I tried again, this time winning Miss Canada at 23 years old and getting the chance to represent my country at Miss Universe 2005 pageant held in Thailand. HM: How did you prepare for the Miss Universe Pageant and how much time in a week did you spend on it? NG: I basically lived and breathed pageant preparation. I would spend hours getting ready for it in every single aspect of the competition. I watched past contests to really know every de-

tail of this competition and visualized myself on the stage doing each part – evening gown, swimsuit, and answer segment. I approached this task as a business or academic project – I made a detailed plan of everything I needed to do in order to place at the top – from wardrobe, to fitness, to skincare and of course interview skills – and checked items off as I completed them. I feel that this has helped me win because I visualized myself at my best and did everything possible to make that vision a reality. At the end, the Universe manifested this victory for me – or rather, I manifested it myself!

HM: Your answer to the final question at the Miss Universe pageant was, “The biggest challenge in my life is to always think positively, but I always try to maintain a positive outlook on life”. That is a big challenge indeed and one that most of us struggle with daily. How do you maintain a positive attitude on a daily basis? NG: I maintain a positive attitude by focusing on good rather than bad things in life. I try to compliment more instead of criticizing. And I count my blessings daily – I look at how much I have and feel grateful rather than think of what I don’t have. When things don’t go as planned or I have a streak of bad luck, I use affirmations to stay positive. Writing sentences of positivity and gratitude on my computer or journal, or saying them out loud gets me right back to my happy self again. HM: How did it feel to wake up as Miss Universe on the very first day, did

you feel like a princess, and what was that particular day like? NG: That incredible day was 15 years ago and it’s hard to believe time flew by so fast! It was a very interesting day as the pageant took place at 8 am in order to be broadcast live in US at 9 pm, so after winning the crown at 10 am my day just got started. I was whisked away to a celebration and press conference held at the Dusit Thani Bangkok, then there was a whirlwind of media and sponsor visits, which all seem like a blur to me now. I honestly don’t even remember what I was feeling because I was so busy and didn’t even have time to be alone – I was constantly surrounded by press, cameras, fans, organization staff, so I couldn’t even gather my thoughts. To this day, the moment of crowning seems like a dream and it’s hard to remember exactly what I was feeling. I think it was more shock and adrenaline, followed by temporary amnesia!

HM: What was the year of being Miss Universe like? What were some of your fondest memories and what important contributions as Miss Universe, traveling the world in that capacity do you feel you made? NG: I always look at my year as Miss Universe as the most interesting year of my life but also the toughest. Your life is not your own for one year. I would get my itinerary for the day or week sent to me and had to live in a designated apartment in New York City away from my friends and family. Jet setting around the world comes with this package, so does jet-lag and extreme exhaustion. However, I got to visit the most interesting places and meet the most incredible people during that year! The most fascinating person I’ve met was Archbishop Desmond Tutu when I was visiting South Africa on a goodwill mission. It was interesting to chat to him about the AIDS pan-

demic in his country, and I learned a lot on that trip about this issue, which was actually my social cause as Miss Universe. On that trip we visited orphanages and hospices where children and adults were dying from the disease as well as youth centers and clinics where they offer information and testing for HIV. I even took a public test myself to set an example and raise awareness for people to know their status. Throughout the year I traveled to over 20 countries, spreading awareness, raising funds, volunteering at AIDS organizations, and meeting many people affected, which gave me a deeper understanding of the stigma surrounding this illness, and I used my platform to the inform the public and educate others. HM: You are from Russia and then Canada. The 2005 Miss Universe Pageant, which you competed in, was held in Thailand and that is where you decided to make your home. How did that happen?

NG: After spending a year in NYC, I decided to come back to the place where it all started for me. Throughout the year as Miss Universe I was invited to come back to Bangkok several times, to do ad campaigns and social work, and I had made some important contacts in the entertainment industry. So when it was time to decide where I would live after passing the crown on, an interesting job offer materialized for me. I was asked to be the brand ambassador for Singha who were also the main sponsor of the pageant that year. The original plan was to come to Thailand for a year to work, and see where it would go from there. I loved living in Thailand so much that after my contract was up, I decided to make it my permanent home. HM: What is your work now and what are your passions in life? NG: My husband Dean and I started a company together called Travelbook (travelbook.com) which is a travel-sharing platform to discover and book experiences. We are both avid travelers and between the two of us have been to over 100 countries. We love to share experiences with others and encourage them to see more of the world as we believe traveling is the best way to grow, learn, and become a more educated person. So people can use the platform to document their travels with photos, videos and check-ins that are easily accessed and can be shared with their friends as recommendations. Users are able to book hotels and flights directly from the platform, so it’s a kind of one-stop place for travelers to dream, plan, book and share their trips. We also have a travel YouTube channel (Travelbook Family) where we showcase amazing resorts and destinations for families. I also do freelance writing and blogging for magazines and travel websites. My passions in life are traveling, music and DJing, parenting, and health/wellness. Since music has always been such a great passion of mine, I decided to learn how to DJ and now one of my favorite jobs is playing at beach clubs and pool parties around South East Asia.

I now have a new agent – Natt Kawinrachadaprida of YSIS Entertainment, and together we are taking on new opportunities for modeling, MC, DJ, and presenter in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Philippines. HM: You have 500,000 followers on Facebook, how important is social media to you personally and professionally? NG: Personally, I use social media to connect with my friends and fans around the world. I feel that platforms like Instagram, and now our own – Travelbook is a great way to share our travel experiences and hopefully inspire others to get out of their comfort zone to travel. Professionally, it is a great way to promote our brand, and brands I’m associated with by endorsements, and that of course is part of my work. HM: In addition to your busy business life, your other full-time job is being a mother to your daughter Maya. How has motherhood affected you as a person?

38

HOT Magazine

NG: Motherhood has been a very unexpected and most wonderfully pleasant surprise of my life. I never planned kids for my future but left the door open to the possibility one day. However, I never could have dreamed how amazing a love between parents and children can be! I can honestly say that this has been the best experience I’ve had in my life, and my love for Maya grows more and more every day! Being a mom has made me more fulfilled and satisfied with my life. I’m much more productive and purposeful now that I’m a mother. HM: Being animal lovers ourselves, we were very pleased to see that you have worked with the Soi Dog Foundation and also work with the World Wildlife Fund to stop the trafficking of endangered species. For those of us who don’t have the public platform that you do, what can we do to help the plight of Thailand’s street dogs and rally against animal trafficking? NG: Everyone can do their part in order to help street animals in their own

way – from small to very involved activities. You can sponsor a dog or cat by giving a monthly donation to Soi Dog Foundation, like I do – it’s a monthly credit card charge so you don’t even have to do anything. If you are really passionate, you can also volunteer with the foundation or find another one that helps street animals. Most importantly, you can spread the word against animal trafficking to your friends through any platform – take a stand against eating shark fin soup, buying ivory products, and taking photos with gibbons and slow lorises. The more awareness there is out there, the more likely we will see these horrendous trades come to an end. So speak up, post links on social media, and if you see your friends engaging, gently explain to them how the behavior hurts the animals and our eco-system. HM: Finally, for young girls who have a dream that is as big as yours was, what words of advice and wisdom do you have for them?

NG: My best advice to give to young women (and men) that have big dreams is – write it down, make a plan, work hard every day on it. No successful business or person has ever happened by accident – it all took vision, planning and hard work. Even if you fail the first time, pick right back up and start again, whether the it’s another goal or the same one. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t! If you can dream it, you can achieve it, and nothing is impossible if you really truly want it! I was told I would never even win Miss Canada because I was an immigrant, and I proved them wrong, and so can you, no matter what obstacles stand in your way. HM: Thank you Natalie Several photos courtesy of Fadil Berisha

L et’s Go,

Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand’s Grand Canyon

S

ometimes one chooses to go to places, not because of the stereotypical appeal towards the white sandy beaches and the young coconut shells but because of the magnificent amalgamate of rich history. At these times, the perfect destination to vacation in gathers culture, strong fascinating tradition, enthralling history and great sightseeing that are even more appealing when we’re revealed the stories behind them. One of those destinations in Thailand is Ubon Ratchathani, Ubon Ratchathani

is one of the four major cities that you will find in the Isan region, which is Thailand’s largest region. Along with Khorat, Udon Thani and Khon Khae, they are known by their local alias “The Big Four of Isan”. Located in the northeast of Thailand, it is the administrative region of the Ubon Ratchathani Province and borders both Laos to the East and Cambodia’s famous Preah Vihear region to the South. The history of Ubon Ratchathani is quite impressive. Ubon Ratchatani

is a relatively young city. But it’s the manner in which it was founded that evokes a sense of wonder. In the late eighteenth century, a young Thao (a title that was previously used to refer to Lord Steward in the Thai royal and noble society) founded the city. Thao Kham Phong ran away from the Kingdom of Vientiane in what is today modern Laos to escape the authority of King Siribunsan. Thao Kham Phong, who was a descendant of Phra Wo and Phra Ta, thus arrived to the

former Kingdom of Siam (modern-day Thailand) while Taksin the Great ruled the nation. Thao Kham Phong would eventually go onto being presented with the title of “Phra Pathum Wongsa” and this allowed him to become the first ever ruler of Ubon Ratchathani. Thus under him in 1792, the province of Ubon Ratchathani was born too. This wouldn’t be the end of Ubon Ratchathani’s struggle though. French forces marched in during the midst

of World War Two as payback for the Thais having attacked French Indochinese posts (Modern day Vietnam). However, this illustrious city was able not only to hold on to its glory but to rapidly expand as a significant hub in Thailand. There are a large number of leisure activities when visiting Ubon Ratchatani. Some highlights include a visit the Pha Taem National Park, which is a beautiful forest setting of fifty four square miles with a natural border be-

tween Laos and Thailand by the iconic Mekong River. Featuring magnificent plateaus, weaving hills and imposing cliffs of sandstone formations, this park is carpeted in deciduous forests and wildflowers. But the most impressive features of this park are the prehistoric caves that include scores of paintings dating back to one thousand and two thousand years before Christ. Saeng Chan waterfall is another beautiful attraction of this iconic sight. Peaceful and flowing, it is enough to put a smile on anyone’s face any day.

The next must-do activity is one that is once again, covered in rich historical connotations. That is to visit the beautiful village of Ban Pa Ao. This place infuses tradition and culture with wonder and amazement. The ancestors of the villagers here escaped Vientiane and settled there two hundred years ago, but did not reject their traditions. Thanks to this, the manner of crafting bronze ware and weaving beautiful silk by the inhabitants of Ban Pa Ao has remained true to their roots. It is the only village in the whole of Thailand that confections its beautiful brassware and other objects with metal through wax molding techniques. Another place worth visiting is the Woen Buek village, where a fascinating natural spectacle awaits. At a fateful intersection of waters, the mighty Mekong River meets the Mun River, which because of the color of the waters, grants a beautiful show of coalescence that is truly calming: the Mekong being of a crimson reddish-brown, greets the tributary of the Mun, which with its blue dashes creates a delightful mix. The line where the separation takes place can actually be seen, and boat tours to witness the beauty of Manam Song Si (“Song Si” literally translating to “Two Colours” in Thai) can be arranged from several upstream locations. The boat trip is a delightful way to spend an afternoon, so try not to miss it.

As with all major areas of Thailand, you cannot leave without savouring the culinary delights of this fantastic place. As is usual in Thailand, food is found all over the streets and establishments of the city. Most popular are the steamed buns with bamboo shoots, which infuse an intense and flavourful combination of spices to the palate combined with the moist and soft touch of the fluffy exterior. If you want an option that will fill you for lunch or dinner, then Khem Mak Nat is a must. This very typical dish consists of a catfish cooked in saline water and chopped pineapple, which truly answers for the customs and culinary traditions of Ubon Ratchathani. Once you have filled your stomach, the next step is to probably go out shopping. Ubon Ratchathani has a wide variety of memorabilia to offer for the traveler’s fond memories. One of the most special are the khit pillows along with their hand-woven cotton, the basketry as well as the aforementioned silk products and brass and bronze metallurgic ornaments. These can be purchased in the many souvenir shops along the streets, be it from individual vendors or established businesses.

Try to go to Ubon Ratchathani between December and February to find the most accommodating climate; this will make it easy to travel without worrying excessively about the heat. As per transportation times and methods, Ubon Ratchathani is around eight to eleven hours from Bangkok by land, buses leave Hua Lumpong station and prices are affordable. Equally if you feel adventurous, you can always take the train, much cheaper, much noisier and much more fun! But if you’re in a hurry to get there, try the direct flights. As a whole, Ubon Ratchathani is a genuinely marvelous and exciting place to visit: rich with history, filled with impressive natural beauty and boasting fantastic cuisine and culture.

But, in the area around Hua Hin there are small islands and wonderful beaches to access by boat, especially in the area of Dolphin Bay and further South. According to Scott Finsten, Harbor Master at Ocean Marina Pattaya, “People don’t realize what the gulf of Thailand has to offer. Everyone goes to Singapore, Malaysia or Phuket, on the Andaman side but few people come up here, and you go to some of these islands, especially off of Prachuabkirikan with the national park Sam Roi Yot, it’s just beautiful there.

Phang Nga Bay is a superb spot and a World Heritage Site, with numerous one of a kind attributes to explore, from a 200-meter tunnel from Koh Phanak to Khao Phing Kan, to the island where the James Bond film "The Man with the Golden Gun" was filmed. Shockingly, nowadays James Bond Island, as it's presently called, is packed with sightseers everyday. Which is why, having your own boat is so great, leave the crowds behind and find your own quiet coves to explore with family and friends.

being able to enjoy convenient access to local shops, restaurants and attractions. From the hotel you only have to walk a few hundred yards to enjoy the local flavor of the small fishing village where a variety of “fresh catch” is available daily. The Anantasila is a family-run, family-oriented hotel which provides a warm, friendly and intimate atmo-

sphere. I say intimate because the hotel offers only 79 rooms compared to other Hua Hin beachfront hotels that have over 300. Amazingly though, within those 79 rooms they offer eight different room types so they can cater to the differing needs and preferences of their guests. Room types include garden rooms, pool view, pool side, junior suites, one-bedroom suites, large seafront apartments, bungalows, pent-

house suites and private pool villas. Most units are decorated in Lanna style from Northern Thailand which blends smoothly with the general ambiance of the property. The Anantasila is really a hidden gem of a hotel. It doesn’t have the name recognition like the large corporate hotels, Hilton, Sheraton etc. but it has a very strong return customer base.

Many guests return year after year and have become like family. The same can be said of their staff, some of whom have been there for over twenty years. The Anantasila’s sandy beach in front of the hotel has plenty of comfortable sun loungers where they will bring you food and drinks as you desire. The same is offered at their 25-meter-long swimming pool with

ocean views whilst a beach bar and a sprawling terrace give you access to beautiful unobstructed views of the sea and Khao Takiab’s shoreline, making for a perfect holiday under the sun. area for when the weather is a little wet, a tree-canopied outdoor dining deck with retractable roof or you can dine at their beach bar, all offering gorgeous ocean views. It’s a wonderful restaurant for a lazy lunch with a bottle of wine or a relaxed dinner with two bottles. Its menu continues to evolve with new delicious items that are priced surprisingly well and not at your typical beachfront hotel prices. Thai and regional specialties are served here along with a wide selection of European dishes. Wine lovers are invited to visit their wine pantry which stocks a hand-picked selection of wines from both local vineyards and wineries across the globe. For those looking to enjoy a refreshing seaside cocktail or evening aperitif, their bar serves a menu of classics and signature drinks. For water sports enthusiasts, the hotel can arrange everything from kite surfing and parasailing to jetskiing and banana boating. Golfers can choose from over a half dozen world-class courses, all less than thirty minutes’ drive away. Hua Hin’s only oceanfront golf course is the closest at less than 10 minutes by car. Besides those activities there is a fitness center on-site.
