gor Sikorsky, an aviation pioneer in both fixed wing and helicopters once said, “The helicopter is probably the most versatile instrument ever invented by man. It approaches closer than any other to the fulfillment of mankind's ancient dreams of the flying horse and the magic carpet.” Inside this issue we introduce you to Advance Aviation, Thailand’s market leader in helicopter charter. The company got its start back in 2006 when a son purchased a helicopter so his father, a member of Thailand’s Privy Council, would have a faster and more convenient way to travel to Hua Hin’s Klai Kang Won Palace for his weekly Tuesday meeting with His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Get on board, strap yourself in and turn to page 32 to read more.

The 17th Asian Yachting Grand Prix got its start last month with the Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek. Managed by the infamous Captain Marty Rijkuris, the annual Skipper & Yacht of the Year Awards takes place over 11 Months, with 12 regattas participating in the region across 7 countries involving over 330 Skippers & Yachts and concludes at the Samui Regatta in May 2019. The winning Skipper and Yacht will be crowned with the prestigious Asian Yachting Grand Prix Skipper and Yacht of the Year titles. Called the “Hardest sports trophy to win in Asia”, it is the highlight of the AYGP season. Sort out your boat shoes and turn to page 64 to see how the first leg of the Asian Yachting Grand Prix went down at Cape Panwa in Phuket.

Our “Let’s Go” feature this month takes us to the Crystal Beach Resort in the Zambales province of the Philippines. A very interesting province, it was once home to Naval Base Subic Bay, a major ship-repair, supply, and rest and recreation facility for the Spanish Navy and subsequently the United States Navy. The naval base was the largest overseas military installation of the United States Armed Forces after Clark Air Base in Angeles City was closed in 1991. Following its closure in 1992, it was transformed into the Subic Bay Freeport Zone by the Philippine government. Fish out your flip flop, slather on some sun screen and flip to page 50 to read why The Crystal Beach Resort and the Zimbales is where you should visit next.

A recent survey showed that Chinese citizens are coming to Thailand in ever increasing numbers. Hua Hin is getting an additional boost with Malay Chinese flying in on Air Asia’s new Kuala Lumpur / Hua Hin route. With that in mind we are pleased to introduce a new monthly column by Ping He geared toward the Chinese citizens who are just now discovering the land of smiles. If you read Mandarin or want to put Google Translate to the test, turn to page 78 to read why Ping loves Hua Hin. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this issue. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

Rotary Installation Dinner Saturday 7th July 2018 saw the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin’s (RCRHH) 9th Club Installation evening dinner held in the Ballroom of the Amari Hua Hin Resort & Spa, during which our new President for the year 2018-19 Brian Anderson was elected for the second time. Brian, who originates from the United States is well known in Hua Hin and works as the Sustainable Development Manager at Chiva-Som International Health Resorts Co., Ltd. and has lived in the city since 2002; interestingly he also used to raise turkeys, all American free-range pastured birds, some of which he says are interesting fowl like some of his friends! A total of 95 guests and VIPs attended the grand occasion and included the Rotary 3330 District Governor Lt Gen Kanit Jamjuntra, and Immediate Past Governor Dr Peera Farmiboon. Members from the Rotary Clubs of Bangkok South, Bangkapi and Hua Hin also joined the celebrations. Guests were entertained before dinner by Sean Maguire and his acoustic guitar, and following the Thai National Anthem and King’s Anthem sat down to one of Amari’s renowned International Buffets, and free flow wine, beer and beverages, with musical background provided by DJ Terry Fox Sandy Beach & Section 5. Following dinner entertainment was provided by the excellent Preserve Hua Hin Khon Dancers, a group dedicated to maintaining the cultural traditions and history of Thailand. President Elect Napa Keawtem then gave a presentation on Service Projects for the year and those which RCRHH had assisted, including a donation of bicycles to local children, a Childrens’ Day at Panyanakul School, two day English Camp and proposed new playground at Nongkhon School, Days for Girls and a number of other activities. 16

HOT AROUND HUA HIN Then came outgoing President, Dr Birger Rexed. Birger has been President of RCRHH for the past 12 months and served the club well during his time in office. He has been a Rotarian for over 30 years and President once before in his home country Sweden. In a heartfelt farewell he thanked members of RCRHH for their support and delivery of manpower. He stated that Rotary did not need new members, it needed ‘Rotarians’, those willing to become involved in the work of the organisation. He was pleased to see that seven new members had joined RCRHH during his term of office and invited his outgoing Board onto the stage to thank them personally. He paid thanks to the various committees and their work, especially the Golf Tournament Sub-Committee and specifically Steve Brighton & Francis Luns. Birger then thanked the staff at Amari for their support of RCRHH during the year. Birger then presented PE Napa Keawtem with the Rotarian Of The Year certificate and a bouquet for her sterling efforts with the Service Committee. Finally he paid tribute to his wife Karina for her support during the year, especially as both of his arms had been in plaster at some stage during the past 12 months, and presented her with another bouquet to much applause. Next to speak was IPDG Dr Peera Farmiboon who thanked RCRHH for their work during the year, he made reference to the increased membership during 2017-18, 46 to 53 making RCRHH the fourth largest club in District 3330. He said RCRHH was, as an English Speaking Club leading in every aspect and setting a standard. He wished the club very best wishes for the forthcoming year. This was followed by the main event, the installation ceremony, during which the Presidential Jewel was passed from Birger to Brian by DG Lt Gen Kanit. Following the formality P Brian began a humorous speech during which he provided everyone with a shot of Jim Beam Bourbon. He also thanked Birger for his work during the year describing him as a ‘A Prince of a Man’. He then made reference to this year’s motto Be The Inspiration as well as saying members should not be asking ‘‘How Can I Help?’’ but saying ‘‘How I Can Help’’. This was followed by a pen picture of all his predecessors as President during the last nine years, with some interesting and funny anecdotes thrown in. He referred to next year’s President – Napa and introduced the new Board for 2018-19. P Brian’s speech was followed by the raffle draw and presentation of bouquets to Lt Gen Jamjuntra for his lady and to Karina Rexed.

28

HOT Magazine

What is your full name and age? Simon Dell, 51 What is your current Job Position? General Manager at Movenpick Asara Resort & Spa How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I first came to work here on another hotel opening, the Amari Hua Hin back in 2010. That’s when we bought a house and decided we would settle here. So we’ve actually been based here for about 8 years, although my career did take me to Hong Kong, China and Sri Lanka for a few years in between. What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? I knew about the Palace of course and I had been to a boutique hotel in Pranburi as a guest prior to actually living in Hua Hin What do you like most about your profession? That is such a long list, how to narrow it down… Supporting the growth of both people and hotels has given me a lot of satisfaction. On a personal level, the industry suits me, the pace, the flexibility required and the pleasure of getting to know so many people from so many different backgrounds and cultures. It’s an eternal learning curve. What do you like least about your profession? In the beginning it does frustrate a bit to miss out on certain friend/family events due to business needs but you get used to it. What do you like most about Hua Hin? It’s our home! Time at home with my wife, barbecues and wine with friends. We have great friends who own local bars and restaurants and we support them all the way. We are also big fans of Tamarind & Cicada markets, we always take visitors from out of town to visit. Baan Khun Por is fun too… as you can see, we eat a lot, so there you go, that’s what we like the most…food.

What is your favorite restaurant and why? (please don’t promote your own restaurants) There are restaurants we go to for different reasons but places we always go back to are: Andreas Italian, Sweet Peppers, Mozza Mia, Tamarind, Ian’s. I also stop frequently for a Thai milk tea or iced coffee at the very local Jena Coffee on soi 88. Best guay tiew reua is along the canal road but I’m not telling you exactly where or everyone will go! What do you like to do in your free time and why? I guess the previous 2 points mostly cover that question, though I also have a deep love for architecture and design and it’s a lifelong dream to design my own house. So that’s what I’m going to do soon. What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why? Enjoy the simplicity, the fresh air, the amazing choice of restaurants, go to Chat Chai market in the morning and Cicada/Tamarind markets at the weekend. Learn kite surfing or improve your golf. This is a terrific town with plenty to do. Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? I spent 2 years working in Moscow some time ago, I joined an amateur football league and we even played in winter, I survived playing football at -30c. I loved my time in Moscow but really, the weather in Hua Hin is so much better…. What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? I did a charity swim at Xmas in the English Channel, water temperature was around 10c. There must be less horrifying ways of raising money for good causes.

Helicopter Charter in Thailand

T

he Privy Council of Thailand is a body of appointed advisors to the Monarch of Thailand. The council, as the Constitution of Thailand stipulates, must be composed of no more than eighteen members. The king alone appoints all members of the council. Privy Councilor Chaovana Nasylvanta was traveling weekly to Hua Hin to meet with His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej at his Klai Kang Won Palace. In early 2006, Chai Nasylvanta, Chaovana’s devoted son, decided that a helicopter would

32

HOT Magazine

be ideal for his father, who was in his late 70’s at the time, to travel to Hua Hin as it would provide convenience, comfort and save travelling time. At the end of 2006, Chaovana decided that in order to recover some of the costs when the helicopter was idle on other days, he would charter the aircraft to serve VIPs and corporate users as the helicopter was already configured for VIP use, plus the market looked quite promising and with that, Advance Aviation was born with headquarters in Bangkok.

Advanced Aviation flies Eurocopter single-engine EC-130 & twin-engine EC-135 helicopters. Eurocopter is a sister company to Airbus. In January 2009 Advanced Aviation purchased their second aircraft, a single engine, EC-130 which is stationed in Phuket and offers interisland transfers and sightseeing over the magnificent Islands of Phuket, Phi Phi, Phang Nga, Samui, Koh Tao and others. In October of 2010 the company added their third aircraft, again

a single engine EC-130 which is being operated in Chiang Mai and its provincial territory. It's the first ever helicopter service in the North Region of Thailand. In November of 2011 they added a second twin-engine EC135 to their Bangkok operations. EC-135’s and EC-130’s are two of the most advanced helicopters in technology and design that Airbus \Eurocopter is producing. Both offer the highest level of safety in the industry and have unparalleled safety records. Both are also equipped with the latest

technology and avionics available to ensure that their pilots will transport you smoothly and safely to your destination. Both also feature the Fenestron® tail rotor system which offers a very quiet and exceptionally smooth ride. A large part of their business is picking up VIP’s at Bangkok’s International airport Suvarnabhumi and flying them to their final destination in Thailand. When flying with Advanced Aviation they will meet you at the jetway and fast track you through Immigrations, Customs

& luggage collection. They will then whisk you via their BMW limousine to their Bangkok Base which is a 10 minute drive from the Airport. Once there you are ushered in to their VIP lounge where you are offered complimentary drinks and snacks. Complimentary drinks continue while on board the aircraft. The EC135’s are configured with 5 VIP seats with a cooler box on board. For an airport transfer from Suvarnabhumi to the Hua Hin airport the charge is THB 130,000 + VAT and takes just 50 minutes.

love surprises. We were heading out to a relatively new resort on the northern side of Hua Hin. The resort was impressive as we wandered through it’s clipped gardens and lawns. Three story high accommodation buildings sit on either side of resort’s pools – pools that seemed to go on forever. All the guest rooms are east facing with pool views. Our walk takes us further and

further into the resort heading for our destination “Brezza” to taste their soon to be launched new menu. The location that “Brezza” sits in is a surprise in itself. The waters of the Gulf of Thailand lapping against an expansive 50 meter wide sea wall set the scene. Generous expanses of manicured lawns. An abundance of relaxing seating all facing the water

and a line comfortable tables and chairs right on the ocean front with candles twinkling as the last of the afternoon light faded. Steps lead up to an open air cocktail bar off to one side of the lawn. Should we perch there for pre-dinner drinks or at one of the comfortable tables beside the water? Water side it is, enjoying the brezza

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND (Italian for breeze) as a gentle sunset happens behind us! Avani Hua Hin’s Executive Chef John Ranaudo joins us to introduce himself and explain a little of the food journey he will take us on this evening. Canadian by birth, and Italian by heritage, John parents relocated the family back to Italy when he was 14. On leaving school

he completed his culinary training in Tuscany before travelling the world as a Chef. Italy and Tuscany are places he returns to whenever life permits - to see family and reacquaint himself with the traditional food of his home region. Honest food focused on tradition - not the latest food trend! This style of food could be called

‘cucina povera’ when translated literally, means "poor kitchen." It indeed refers to the frugal genius of Italian home cooks who made the most of the produce they gathered from their gardens, forests, oceans, and backyard coops. Cooking that has simple, fresh seasonal ingredients as the hero. Cooking focused on taste and simplicity. Food for the family to enjoy while sharing time together!

Under Chef John’s guidance “Brezza” is changing from it’s current more traditional Italian style restaurant that can be found most anywhere, to one focused on something that Hua Hin and Thailand have in abundance – seafood – in all its glory but with that unique Italian influence! Our first taste of this new food styling was a crispy Endive and Apple Salad, topped with toasted almonds, shallots and capers, dressed in balsamic and olive oil. The slight bitterness of the endive countered by the sweetness of the apple. And to top the salad off – small deep fried Taleggio cheese croquettes. A soft washed rind cheese, traditionally from Lombardy, with an 40

exciting, pungent and aromatic taste. A salad of simplicity with the perfect balance of flavors and textures. Other starters and appetisers our group dived into included a perfectly tasty and authentic deep fried Calamari and Vegetables with garlic mayo, and a Seafood casserole. This dish is from the coastal regions of Tuscany and Liguria called ‘Cacciucco’ which traditionally used the fish left at the bottom of the boat after the fishermen had sold their days catch. Chef John’s seafood casserole has been elevated and included sautéed mussels, prawns, and scallops – all siting in rich tomato based sauce with chili, garlic and white wine and presented with thin slices of toasted

garlic focaccia bread. The underlying richly flavoured seafood stock in the sauce with just the right amount of chilli heat brought this dish together. The new menu will include selected Thai dishes and the Yum Talay, spicy seafood salad, was as authentic as we’ve tasted. Next up was a Seafood Risotto made with Italian Carnaroli rice infused with saffron and topped with small twirls of grilled vegetables. The lobster and crab stock used to cook the rice adds an extra layer of depth to this scrumptious seafood rich risotto. Not in the mood for seafood – no problems!

Grilled meats will also be available, or you could try the Tuscan Pici Pasta. Homemade ‘Pici’ pasta with braised beef tenderloin in red wine and tomato sauce. Originating from the Tuscan province of Siena, pici or pinci pasta are thick strands of pasta made with a simple dough of flour and water that is cut into strips and then hand-rolled. It is like a thick spaghetti and slightly uneven in thickness due to the hand rolling. Perfect with this rich, meaty sauce. Flame grilled food, and especially local seafood, will star on the new menu. To showcase this we were presented with a platter containing a whole grilled sea bass, jumbo prawns butterflied and cooked in their shell, melt in your mouth squid, and New Zealand mussels. Barbecue heaven! Given our food journey had taken us this far, how could we not try desserts? Grand Marnier Semifreddo - a light parfait style dessert flavoured with Grand Marnier sitting on a dark chocolate sauce and sprinkled with pieces of fine almond croquant. Or my favourite, Pineapple flambés. Thin slices of fresh local pineapple, flambé with local rum and topped with coconut ice cream. Brezza is an evolving story taking the abundance of our local seafood that both Thai and Italian cuisines hold in a place of honour, and serving it with an authentic Italian twist. In my mind, a marriage made in heaven. Brezza’s new menu will be available from the first week of August. Brezza can be found on the ocean side of Avani Hua Hin Resort & Villas. The restaurant can be contacted +66 32 898 989, or fb.vhhv@avanihotels. com Weekdays the restaurant opens for dinner only 6:00 pm – 10:30 pm. On Saturday & Sundays Brezza operates from 12:00 noon – 10:30 pm. There is parking at the Phetkasem Rd end of the resort with additional parking adjacent to Brezza which can be accessed if you come down the small Soi just before Avani, with the sign ‘Devasom Hua Hin Resort’. Come be tantalised and surprised at “Brezza”! By Michael Cullen

T

he travel and tourism industry is one of the world’s largest industries with a global economic contribution (direct, indirect and induced) of over 7.6 trillion U.S. dollars in 2016. Consultancy UK reports that the industry saw 1.18 billion travellers in international arrivals in the same period, and experts such as David Scowsill, president and chief executive of the World Travel and Tourism Council, expect this trend to continue.

“Whether in a recession or a growth period, the travel and tourism industry is extremely robust. It grows between 1 and 1.5 percentage points faster than the world economy,” he says. Along with the global growth of the industry, eco-tourism has also been soaring in popularity.

And while all this means more options for consumers, those thinking about embarking on an eco-tour will want to choose wisely to avoid falling prey to those capitalizing on the popularity of ecotourism by marketing themselves as “green” or “eco-friendly”, without fully implementing its principles. The first step is understanding what it means. Eco-tourism, as defined by The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), is ”responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people”. It prioritizes conservation, communities and education, allowing tourists to not just gain new experiences but also enhance their world view through a mindful interaction with their destination.

Over the decades, eco-tourism has evolved with the times, and is no longer confined to ecologically significant locations, but has also spread to other types of communities that have as much to offer as traditional eco-tourism sites and would benefit from the direct support of tourism dollars and exposure. The HOT Magazine team recently had the pleasure of staying at the eco-friendly Crystal Beach Resort where they follow a strict adherence to the "3 R's," Reuse, Reduce & Recycle. The resort is located in the Zambales province of the Philippines, approximately a 3.5 to 4.5 hour drive from Manila. While we normally like to be ensconced in Five-Star Hotels, Crystal Beach is on the other end of the spectrum which made it a different type of fun, a fun of our youth.

First, a little bit about Zambales. Stretching 173 Kilometers on the Central West Coast of Luzon Island fronting the South China Sea, Zambales is the second-largest province of Central Luzon and is one of the less densely populated areas in the Philippines – quite a surprise since the province is just a few hours northwest of Manila. Most of its inhabitants are crammed in the lowland plains toward the coast – the indigenous Aetas (the earliest inhabitants) and the superstitious Sambals (an Austronesian group of people who displaced the Aetas and from whom the Zambales were named after) live in its mountain ranges. Zambales has great wreck diving spots and it is actually considered as the wreck diving capital of the Philippines – with most of it concentrated in the Subic area, the former site of one of the biggest naval bases of the Americans in the area. During World War 2, at least 25 Japanese ships were sunk off the Zambales coast – some of which were probably salvaged immediately during the abrupt postwar period to open up Subic Bay for shipping. Rumors have it that there are at least 10 large ships or more that lie in its waters. Aside from World War 2 wrecks, the remains of the San Quentin (sunk in 1898), a wooden gunboat, lies nearby Grande Island. San Quentin is the oldest known wreck in the Subic area. Zambales does not have a functional airport - the closest functional airport is the Clark International Airport in the neighbouring province of Pampanga. Subic Bay International Airport, which is located in Cubi Point in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone is no longer functional for domestic or international flights. The Freeport Zone is host to many tourist attractions which include casinos, parks, malls, beach-side huts, cottages and resorts, as well as historical sites. Zambales has two pronounced seasons: dry from October to June, and wet from July to September. Approximately 40 kilometers from the Subic Bay Freeport Zone is the Crystal Beach Resort which is one of the most popular resorts in the area, and it’s easy to understand why. Aside from the fact that the resort can accommodate hundreds of guests, there are also quite a number of spots that most people would refer to as Instagrammable. The very first thing we noticed was how organized the flow was, from parking your car to checking in, it’s quite obvious how over the years they’ve really refined the whole process.

52

HOT Magazine

The resort encompasses eight hectare which equates to 50 rai and it is enveloped by Pine Trees. It reminded me of Central Oregon in the States. Accommodations vary greatly. On the high end you have their Premier Room which offers air-conditioning and a comfortable covered veranda with nature views. The Premier room doesn’t come cheap, at 8,000 pesos per night, a little over 5,000 baht, it’s in the price range of what some BKK 5-Star hotels charge for a night. The lowest end of accommodation at Crystal Beach is just a spot to pitch your tent. If you don’t have a tent they will rent you one for just 100 pesos or 63 baht a night.

Crystal Beach Resort

There are plenty of activities to keep you busy here including surf lessons by the Quiksilver School Academy, Swimming with professional lifeguards on duty, Island Tours and Waterfalls Trekking, Basketball, Beach Volleyball and Frisbee, Billiards, Ping-pong and Darts. After a long day of activities, we enjoyed their sports massage. They also offer Swedish massage. The resorts restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The resort promotes itself as a great team building destination. With that in mind it’s not surprising that it has two Conference Halls. The Hall of David, accommodates 40 in a Theatre Set up and the Hall of Moses which can accommodate up to 100 people. If you don’t want to overnight but do want to use their facilities you’re in luck. Crystal Beach offers day use at 895 pesos, approximately 560 THB of which 395 pesos, approximately 250 baht, is refundable upon checkout. Fares to Manila from BKK can be had for as low as 5,700 THB round trip and from their you can take a private car or bus to the Crystal Beach Resort. I think what we enjoyed most about our time there was their chilled-out beach. Interestingly, the sand is black and when the sun shines on it the sand shines back at you as if the beach were made of Swarovski crystals.

Bumrungrad Health Briefs What You Need to Know About Glaucoma Glaucoma is the leading cause of permanent blindness globally. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, an estimated 64.3 million people worldwide suffer from glaucoma. Those numbers are estimated to nearly double by 2040. Glaucoma is a progressive nerve disease caused by increased pressure in the eyes. During its early stages, symptoms can be difficult to detect and treat in time before vision loss becomes permanent.

Are you at risk for glaucoma? Glaucoma may not be preventable, but blindness from the condition may be averted with earlier detection and treatment. Many people don’t realize they have glaucoma until it has progressed significantly. Because of this, it’s important to be aware of the common risk factors. Being 40 years or older • Family history of glaucoma • Previous eye injury • High eye pressure • Taking steroid medications • Other risk factors include a high degree of near- or far-sightedness, thin corneas, diabetes and migraines.

How is glaucoma diagnosed? Bumrungrad International Hospital’s Eye Center offers several diagnostic methods which reflect specific risk factors to ensure the recommended test is right for your unique situation. These methods include: • Slit-lamp Microscopy Eye Exam • Eye Pressure Test (Intraocular Pressure) • Central Cornea Measurement (Pachymeter) • Anterior Chamber Angle Exam (Visante OCT) • Optic Nerve Exam • Visual Field Test

How is glaucoma treated? The choice of treatment depends on the type and stage of glaucoma. Once these factors have been evaluated, your doctor will recommend the treatment option most likely to prove effective.

54

Medication: A number of medications are effective in lowering eye pressure, improving fluid drainage from the eye and reducing the volume of fluid that the eyes produce. Laser treatment: Various laser therapy treatments are available depending on the glaucoma type and stage of progression. • Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is often used in combination with other treatments to treat primary open angle glaucoma when eye-drop medication is ineffective. • Laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) is used to treat angle-closure glaucoma. • Laser cyclophotocoagulation is used when other treatment options are ineffective. Conventional surgery: Conventional surgery may be recommended after medications or laser therapies prove unable to control the glaucoma. • Trabeculectomy is a procedure whereby a surgeon creates a tiny drainage hole in the white part of the eye to help reduce eye pressure. • Aqueous shunt surgery is where a drainage device is implanted in the eye. This is an option if a trabeculectomy does not help. • XEN Gel Stent is a flexible, nondegradable gelatin shunt implanted into the subconjunctival, or exposed, mucous membrane. The creation of a new drainage channel reduces intra-ocular pressure.

Eyesight is a precious gift that is meant to last a lifetime. Consult a specialist if you are concerned that you may be at risk for glaucoma. You can make an appointment at Bumrungrad International Hospital’s Eye Center for a complete eye examination. The Eye Center is located on the 18th floor of Bumrungrad’s International Clinic Building and can be reached by dialing +66 2011 3891.

The Anantasila is a familyrun, family-oriented hotel which provides a warm, friendly and intimate atmosphere. I say intimate because the hotel offers only 73 rooms compared to other Hua Hin beachfront hotels that have over 300. Amazingly though, within those 73 rooms they offer nine different room types so they can cater to the differing needs and preferences of their guests. Room types include garden rooms, pool view, pool side, junior suites, one-bedroom suites, large seafront apartments, bungalows, penthouse suites and private pool villas. Their private pool villas are their newest addition having been completed just a few months ago. Most units are decorated in Lanna style from Northern Thailand which blends smoothly with the general ambiance of the property. The Anantasila is really a hidden gem of a hotel. It doesn’t have the name recognition like the large corporate hotels, Hilton, Sheraton etc. but it has a very strong return customer base. Many guests return year after year and have become like family. The same can be said of their staff, some of whom have been there for over twenty years.

The Anantasila’s sandy beach in front of the hotel has plenty of comfortable sun loungers where they will bring you food and drinks as you desire. The same is offered at their 25-meterlong swimming pool with ocean views whilst a beach bar and a sprawling terrace give you access to beautiful unobstructed views of the sea and Khao Takiab’s shoreline, making for a perfect holiday under the sun. The hotel’s restaurant is one of the favorites for those of us lucky enough to live in Hua Hin and its open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For seating, you have your choice of a covered dining area for when the weather is a little wet, a tree-canopied outdoor dining deck with retractable roof or you can dine at their beach bar, all offering gorgeous ocean views. It’s a wonderful restaurant for a lazy lunch with a bottle of wine or a relaxed dinner with two bottles. Its menu continues to evolve with new delicious items that are priced surprisingly well and not at your typical beachfront hotel prices. Thai and regional specialties are served here along with a wide selection of European dishes. For those who enjoy a good Cesar Salad, here they do it “old style” by preparing it at your table.

Wine lovers are invited to visit their wine pantry which stocks a hand-picked selection of wines from both local vineyards and wineries across the globe. For those looking to enjoy a refreshing seaside cocktail or evening aperitif, their bar serves a menu of classics and signature drinks. A specially priced Happy Hour is offered everyday between 16:00 to 18:00 and live music can be found many evenings.

For water sports enthusiasts, the hotel can arrange everything from kite surfing and parasailing to jetskiing and banana boating. Golfers can choose from over a half dozen world-class courses, all less than thirty minutes’ drive away. Hua Hin’s only oceanfront golf course is the closest at less than 10 minutes by car. Besides those activities there is a small fitness center on-site.

T

he 15th anniversary Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek took place July 18th thru the 22nd headquartered at the 5-star Cape Panwa Hotel, the racing takes place around the islands of Phuket's southeast coast.

Having grown in popularity, the award-winning regatta welcomed 38 boats and more than 500 sailors and families from 20 countries around the world to compete. Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek is the first event in the 2018/19 Asian Yachting Grand Prix – a circuit of 13 top-tier sailing events throughout Asia – and has gained a reputation for providing competitive world-class racing and an unrivalled beachfront social scene. The day before the start of racing saw weather warnings by the Thai Meteorological Department on the back of tropical storm ‘Son-Tinh’ heading to Thailand. The word “Typhoon” was being bandied about the skippers briefing as all were wondering “what’s going to happen tomorrow?”

DAY 1 But what a difference a day makes. Following the Mount Gay Rumsponsored Opening Party, sailors were on the beach bright and early for the start and were welcomed by blue skies, plenty of sun and a fresh 16 knots of breeze – an ideal day for racing in the tropics. Following a brief AP postponement onshore, the fleet were on-the-water and heading for the start line. Due to a rolling sea state the Race Officer decided to keep the smaller, sporty Firefly 850s and Pulse 600s onshore and finally got their race card underway early afternoon, and as the day wore on the breeze started to drop off.

The day’s breeze definitely favoured the bigger boats and in IRC I Ray Roberts and his crew took the first two wins of the series on their TP52, Team Hollywood. Gordon Ketelby’s Farr 40 Ramrod corrected out for second in Race 1, just three seconds ahead of 2016 IRC Racing II winner, the modified Sydney 40 East Marine Emagine, skippered by Phuket-based Aussie Scott Bradley. In the second race of the day East Marine Emagine went one better placing second on corrected time with another Sydney 40 Aquari, skippered by Craig Nicholls, leapfrogging Ramrod to finish third. Seconds made the difference in the one-design Firefly 850 class and it was George Eddings’ Blue Noze who sailed to victory in Race 1, 53 seconds

ahead of Hans Rahmann’s Voodoo while defending champion Twin Sharks, skippered by John Newnham finished third. It was all change in Race 2 of raceday 1 as Twin Sharks was fast out of the blocks and lead around the short course to finish in a time of 00:26:17. Moto Inzi finished in second and Surf Patrol were just nine seconds back in third. In the one-design Pulse 600 class the five entries enjoyed some close racing on flat water in Chalong Bay and completed just a single race. The first win of the series went to Brian Wood’s SuDu Yellow, thirteen seconds back in second was Pixalux, skippered by Mick Tilden, with Simon Oliver’s SuDu Red in third.

DAY 2 Taking advantage of Chalong Bay's sheltered conditions, all classes raced into the bay today except IRC I which, lead by Ray Roberts' TP52 Team Hollywood, enjoyed a fast windward/ leeward before heading off around Bon and the southern islands. While Team Hollywood continued to dominate with two more wins, the pack of chasing 40-footers enjoyed their own battle, switching places and where one mistake and a few seconds are the difference between hero and zero. After a slow start on Day 1, David Dimmock's Loco jumped back into contention with a second place in the first race while Craig Nicholls' Aquari placed third with just 30 seconds separating second to fourth in the first race - a sign of how close the 40-foot racing is. There appeared to be no stopping Neils Degenkolw's Phoenix in IRC II who added two more wins to their scorecard for the day, making it four for four. However, for the rest of the fleet, encouragement came in the form of Sailescapes Farrgo Ladies who were on their transom in Race 1 to finish less than a minute behind on corrected time. Third place went to the Farr 1104 sister-ship, Krabi Boat Lagoon Pinocchio skippered by Susan Parker. In Race 2, the Platu The Fox revelled in the breeze to take second place, just seven seconds ahead of the second all-female crew on Krabi Boat Lagoon Pinocchio. Despite claiming line honours in both races, the J/130 Jing Jing couldn't correct out onto the podium and had to settle for two fifth places. After more than two hours of racing, just 20 seconds separated the top two in Cruising Class with Keith Barry's Beaux Esprits getting the better of defending champion Lady Bubbly and with that, take a two point lead in the standings. Third place went to Venture, skippered by Tony Pfeiffer. In Multihull Racing, Scott Galle's Bladerunner IX got the better of Fugazi in both races despite Fugazi claiming two line honours by more than 11 minutes each time, and with it they sat two points behind Fugazi in the overall standings. Cosmo continued their consistent run of third places with two more for the day. John Newnham's Twin Sharks recovered from a third in the first race of the series and with two wins making it three bullets so far and a clear lead in the overall standings. Two seconds for Hans Rahmann's Voodoo brought them up the ranks into second overall while a 3,4 for Surf Patrol gave them a slim one point margin in third place.

Mick Tilden's Pixalux was back on the pace following up his second in Day 1 with three wins from three races. There wasn't much in it in the first race, however, as Simon Oliver's SuDu Red finished just 14 seconds behind while Zam Bevan's Multihull Solutions H30 was further back in third. Racing continued to script in the second and third races of the day with SuDu Red second in both and Multihull Solutions H30 third. Meanwhile Day 1 winner, Brian Wood and his crew on SuDu Yellow, never started any of the races and dropped to fifth place overall.

DAY 3 They say “bad things come in threes and Day 3 was clear proof that good things also come in threes as it was another fantastic day of sailing with 1-and-a-half metre swells on the outer course, the downwind runs proved to be a surfers paradise where gains were made, and lost. Sixteen knots and lumpy seas saw the Race Officer start the Firefly 850 and Pulse 600s outside and send them into Chalong Bay for some flatter water while the rest of the fleet enjoyed some spectacular racing on the outer course. Two windward/ leewards were the order of the day for the IRC classes and in IRC I Ray Roberts' Team Hollywood added two more bullets to their unblemished record. While Roberts was streaking away into the distance, the four 40-footers were thriving on the close racing with just metres in it on-the-water. In the first race, following an issue with a spinnaker drop on the first run, East Marine Emagine slipped back and crossed the line in fifth, correcting out also in fifth. Loco sailed well, crossed the line in second and corrected out in third while Aquari beat Ramrod over the line by just five seconds claiming second place on handicap in the process. With their spinnaker tangled at the end of the first downwind leg, the allRussian crew on Megazip broached, recovered and then struggled to free themselves. Finally, after dropping the spinnaker they struggled to regain their rhythm and DNF'd (did not finish) the first race. Aquari initiated some urgent repairs to their steering system between races and then went on to claim their second place of the day ahead of Loco in third.

Four 40-footers up against a TP52 is a tough challenge and as a result, the organisers have introduced a special IRC I – 40 Division to the results sheet. Reviewing the six races so far, it's clear how close these four are onthe-water and on handicap. Aquari currently sits top of the standings while Loco and East Marine Emgaine are tied on points with Loco in second based on countback.

fourth on corrected time. They fared better in Race 2 claiming third place and with that are third in the overall standings with just one day to go.

Two more races for IRC II and two more wins for Phoenix means they were undefeated and carry a 10-point lead into the final day. Despite two DNS' (did not start) yesterday, Prime Factor were back out on the course today and quick into their running with two second places, and with the discard now in play they sit second overall.

It can take some serious breeze to get the cruisers throwing spray and today, they came into their own – surfing waves and flying off the top – putting on a show for the international media corps on cue. And with this new found love of speed, there was some shaking-up of the results sheet. Sand Groper got on the podium for the first time with a third in Race 1 while Lady Bubbly scored their first place of the series in Race 2. A 1,2 for Beaux Esprits saw them remain firmly at the top of the standings while a 2,3 for Venture put some space between themselves and Linda to remain third overall.

A slow start for Sailescapes Farrgo Ladies in Race 1 hurt them and although they managed to sail over Krabi Boat Lagoon Pinocchio to cross the line ahead, they had to settle for

Watching the trimarans in the Multihull Racing class surfing the morning rollers was a sight to behold with Fugazi setting a blistering pace in Race 1 to cross the line first

and correct out in first place. Just 20 seconds behind was Bladerunner IX. The tables were turned in Race 2 which now means both are tied on points with the break in favour of Bladerunner IX, leaving plenty to play for tomorrow. Two third places for Cosmo saw them sitting comfortably in third overall. A little slow off the start in the day's first Firefly 850 race for Twin Sharks didn't do them any damage in the results stakes as they sailed well to win the race. At the second start Twin Sharks and Voodoo were close to “rubbing” at the pin-end. Voodoo bared away, performed a 360 and Twin Sharks sailed off in to the distance and with it, claimed another bullet. That left the fivetime defending champion with an eight point lead and one hand on the trophy.

Voodoo recovered well in the second race and finished the day with a 4,2 remaining second overall, ahead of Blue Noze in third. The Race Officer rattled off three fast and furious races for the Pulse 600s which shook up the standings. A 1,3,4 for Pixalux wasn't the outcome Mick Tilden and crew would have wanted, especially as a 2,1,1 for SuDu Red saw them narrow the gap to a single point while a 3,2,2 for Multihull Solutions H30 kept them in third overall and comfortably ahead of SuDu Grey.

DAY 4 There were some tired faces on the beachfront as the sailors prepared for the fourth and final day of racing and the 16+ knotter made for a fitting finale to a memorable 15th anniversary Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek. Ray Roberts' Team Hollywood have barely put a foot wrong all regatta. With slick crew work, the TP52 thrived in the conditions and the results sheet showed a dominating performance – eight wins from eight races. This is the third consecutive IRC I title for Ray Roberts, and second for Team Hollywood (2016 he won on his other TP52, Millenium Racing). Chris Nicholls' Sydney 40 Aquarii found their rhythm in the second half of the regatta and put a string of second places together to claim second overall while a slow starting, but fast finishing, Loco, skippered by David Dimmock, finished with a series of third places to move them up the standings to third overall. In the IRC I – 40 Division, four competitive 40-footers (2x Sydney 40, 1x Farr 40 and 1x Club Swan 42) were enjoying some neck-and-neck battles on-the-water, where the smallest error was enough to cost a place. In the end it was the ever-young Aquarii that proved they can still mix it with the best on IRC handicap and won overall. Loco upped their game in the second half of the regatta to claim second while East Marine Emagine tied with Ramrod and won on count-back. Racing was so close that on a number of races less than 15 seconds were the winning margins on corrected time. Susan Parker and her crew on Krabi Boat Lagoon Pinocchio put in some acrobatic displays the day before and on this day they certainly had the bit between their teeth as they corrected out a full minute ahead of sister-ship Sailescapes Farrgo Ladies, and less than 30 seconds behind Phoenix to claim second.

HOT Magazine

A DNF in the final race for Phoenix blew it open for the rest of the class and the podium places, and it was the fast finishing Krabi Boat Lagoon Pinocchio who claimed their first place of the series and with that tied Max Palleschi's Prime Factor. On count-back it was the ladies who took second overall with Prime Factor having to settle for third, and with seven wins from eight races Phoenix defend their title and three-peat. A single race showdown in the Cruising Class saw Chris Mitchell's Lady Bubbly take the days win, adding to their win the day before. However, it wasn't enough however to overhaul Keith Garry's Beaux Esprits who held on to win the series by a single point. Venture, skippered by Tony Pfeiffer finished third. Multihull Racing was finely balanced with Bladerunner IX and Fugazi tied at the top coming into the final day, and with two races planned anything could happen. Fast out of the blocks in Race 1 was Scott Galle's Bladerunner IX and although Dan Fidock's Fugazi went on to claim their seventh line honours, the time difference just wasn't enough and Bladerunner IX corrected out ahead to draw first blood. Fugazi would need to win the final race to tie the points and force it to a decision on count-back. The second race saw the fleet off on a longer course, around the

islands and flying their hulls the two trimarans made light work of it. Despite finishing 13 minutes head, it wasn't enough and Fugazi had to settle for second in the race and second overall. After some close racing and having come from behind, Bladerunner IX were crowned class winners while Cosmo had to settle for third overall.

off-the-line clean and Pixalux was playing catch-up for the rest of the race. They managed to sail back into contention and finish second behind Simon Oliver's SuDu Red and tied the series points, but due to more first place finishes for Pixalux, they claimed the title while Zam Bevan's Multihull Solutions H30 finished third overall.

With just one race scheduled for the day, John Newnham and his Twin Sharks team had the title already in the bag and soon after crossing the start voluntarily DNF'd leaving today's bragging rights for someone else. And it was Voodoo, skippered by Hans Rahmann, who was bridesmaid in five races so far during week, that upped their game and took the final race win of the series and with that, safely secured second overall. A well-earned third place, and overall, went to George Eddings' Blue Noze.

It was four days to remember, great winds, great racing and great parties. Raceweek 2018 came to a close on the 22nd of July at a lavish gala dinner held in the gardens of the Cape Panwa Hotel. Attended by VIPs, international media and more than 500 sailors and guests, the prize presentations were presided over by Vice Admiral Somnuk Preampramot, Commander of the Third Naval Area Command who presented the prizes to the overall regatta winners.

John Newnham extended his winning streak to six consecutive Phuket Raceweek wins and while that deserves praise, you only need to look at the time sheets to see how close the racing was between these one-design pock-rockets throughout the fleet.

The regatta is organised by Media Business Services with support from the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Sports Authority of Thailand, Phuket Yacht Club and the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand. All photos by Guy Nowell/ Top of the Gulf Regatta.

In the dial up for the Pulse 600s a port-starboard incident between Pixalux and SuDu Red saw Pixalux complete their penalty turn as the start gun went off. SuDu Red sailed
