elcome to Issue 7, Volume 7. When you think of southern Thailand you probably think of the gorgeous Andaman coast, or some beautiful far flung islands ringed with white sands and turquoise waters. But as the experienced traveler will tell you, if you go off-track, you'll find a lot of hidden gems past the highway. One of them is the second biggest province in the South of Thailand, Nakhon Si Thammarat. Usually shortened to Nakhon, it is an ancient city of great importance to Thai history, dating back to the 7th century. Nakhon was once the center of art, culture, and marine trading for the region, proven by abundant antiquities and archaeological evidence discovered there. Nakhon, the capital bearing the same name as the province, was an influential trading port for centuries attracting merchants from China, India, Sri Lanka and Europe. Dig out your comfortable walking shoes and turn to page to 40 to read why Nakhon is truly worth a visit on your next trip south. How many of us have admired adults when we were younger and then grew up to find that adults actually had no idea what they were doing either? In his best-selling first book, “Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart”: Thirty True Things You Need to Know Now”, Dr Gordon Livingston, a psychiatrist who’s been listening to people’s problems for decades, revealed thirty bedrock truths about life, and how best to live it. Thailand once again played host to Mister National Universe with the host cities this year being Kanchanaburi and Hua Hin. Broadcast live in high definition, the final “Coronation” night reached almost a million people. This 8 day event saw 19 men, each representing their own country compete for the title and to bring glory to their nation. Put on your finest and turn to page 66 to see who the grand winner in this year’s Mister National Universe competition was and why you should have been there. True Arena Hua Hin Once Again Hosts The ITF True Arena Hua Hin, Hua Hin’s ultimate full sports facility, continues to bring quality tennis to Hua Hin. True Arena started off 2019 by hosting the Woman’s Tennis Association’s Thailand Open 2019, bringing 32 WTA players from around the world to compete in Hua Hin The first of nine ITF World Tour Tennis circuits which offers more than US $155,000 in prize-money began in early July and will run thru November. Suwat Liptapanlop, advisory chairman of the organising committee, said four ITF events have been staged at the tennis complex over the past four years, giving local players the chance to compete
and climb up the world rankings.

MCC At The Avani + On Sunday June 16th the Grand Dame of Hua Hun, Khun Lizzy once again held court at her Multi-Cultural Community event, better known as MCC. The AVANI + was once again the location and Matthew Fryer the GM of the AVANI + and his team put out a great buffet. With Lizzy’s events there is always a dress code and this time it was Songkran Shirt’s, which led to a extremely colorful ballroom. Lizzy’s MCC is a charitable organization and this evening the raised funds were split 50/50 between Lizzy’s poor & education projects & Edwin Wiek’s Wildlife Friends Foundation. Guests of note included Mr. Thaweesin Pattanapiras, nicknamed Khun Boy, he is a member of the Provincial Parliament and the Governor of Prachuabkhirikan sent his representative, District Chief Mr. Tanon Panpiparat. Edwin Wieke, the founder of Wildife Friends Foundation attended as did Andrew Stocks founder of Sunshine Retirement Residences. Emcee Brian Anderson once again had the crowd laughing while they were entertained by Christoph Nakila & his neice Cecilia along with DJ Jerome. Infiniti & Full Moon Brewworks Summer Collaboration The InterContinental Pattaya Resort is just two hours from Bangkok by car and two hours away from Hua Hin by ferry. The resort has many restaurants including Infiniti. Infiniti is an Al fresco style restaurant with spectacular ocean views. Cuisine here is international and modern utilizing their wood fired oven and char grill. Infiniti was also the setting for a very special dinner held on Friday evening June 21st. The InterContinental’s Director of Food & Beverage, Mr. Phinyo Thanbunphairach, along with their Executive Chef Khun Sumit Potiket, partnered with Sukij M.Thipatima,

Director & Master Brewer of Phuket’s Full Moon Brewworks to present a Summer Craft Beer Dinner. What makes Full Moon Brewworks special is that they combine traditional beer-making techniques with the Thai art of culinary and local ingredients. Brewing with malts, hops & yeast, all from the world’s leading sources, they blend in local herbs, spices and fruits to deliver a distinctive new definition of Thai beer. The evening was to start at 6pm but was delayed a bit because there was just too much sun on the outdoor terrace,
a terrible problem to have although it did lead to a stunning sunset over the Gulf of Thailand. Once everyone was seated, introductions were made and then the gastronomical event began. First out from Chef Sumit’s Kitchen was Alaskan king crab & sweet corn panna cotta, Bussaba Ex-Weisse jelly, dill-cream cheese, salmon roe and a pistachio cracker. This course was paired with Full Moon’s Bussaba ExWeisse Hefe- Weizen. A Hefe-Weizen is a classic German wheat beer, however Full Moon’s Thai take on it adds notes of ripe tropical fruits giving it an easy to drink appeal.
HOT AROUND PATTAYA The second course was pan-seared foie gras & duck breast with braised red cabbage, orange, apple and grand manriner-orange reduction, all paired with a Chalawan Pale Ale. The pale ale style is American and had notes of lychee, citrus & floral which gave it a bold & smooth flavor. This was followed by a cinnamonrum & orange sherbet to cleanse the palate. The next arrival was a braised Australian angus short rib in Chatri Ipa & Thai herbs, a roasted marinated lamb loin with garlic, kaffir lime leaves, crispy barley rice coriander crust and a Mediterranean couscous salad, paired with a Chatri Ipa. The Chatri Ipa is classified as a Session IPA which is an intensely hoppy beer with a lower alcohol level. Full Moon’s version adds a taste of grapefruit & herbs which they define as being “chewy & spicy”. A cheese platter followed with oven-baked brie, gorgonzola with berries & apple compote, walnuts and roasted jasmine-honey, paired with Full Moon’s Andaman Dark Ale. Categorized as a British Bitter, the beer is characterized by fruitiness, light to medium body and an accent on hop aromas more than hop bitters. Full Moon’s take on it adds hints of caramel & floral giving it a mild and refreshing taste. There was still one more course to go which pleased my desire for sweet. Chef Sumit and his team presented a caramel pecan blondies cake accompanied with passion & mango ice cream. A very satisfying conclusion to a truly enjoyable evening. Full Moon’s Master Brewer, Khun Sukij, or just “M” as he is known to his friends, developed a taste for Craft Beers during his university days in the U.S. State of North Carolina. After returning to Thailand he was very happy to meet a friend’s father who was brewing his own beer. In short order M was creating his own craft beer which led to Full Moon Brewworks emerging as an artisan beer brewer in 2010, locating in Phuket. Full Moon Brewworks Beer is available in hundreds of luxury resorts and hotels along with fine dining, and independent restaurants.

Campari & Imbibe Celebrate A Centenary Of The Negroni During Negroni Week 2019

taly’s iconic red aperitif and Imbibe Magazine have allied once again for the seventh year to showcase Negroni Week 2019 – a celebration of the iconic and historic Negroni cocktail. Created by Imbibe, Negroni Week is an international charity initiative

that took place from the 24th to the 30th of June in bars, restaurants and retailers around the world, dedicated to celebrating the crimson-red cocktail, with Campari at the heart, over the common goal of raising money for charitable initiatives. And this year is even more special, as 2019 marks the 100-year anniversary of the Negroni:
Negroni Week in Thailand began on June 24th at Bangkok’s iconic Bamboo Bar located within the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The raucous launch party featured legendary jazz and passionate dance performances. The Bamboo Bar first opened its doors in the late 1940’s. The bar has played host to some of the world’s most famous
patrons, Ray Charles, Sean Connery, Louis Armstrong, Eartha Kitt, Eric Clapton, Roger Moore, Dionne Warwick, Duke Ellington, Marlon Brando, Noël Coward, Bryan Ferry, and Mick Jagger have all enjoyed the atmosphere of the Bamboo Bar with a few of the stars entertaining the lucky guests who happened to be there that
night. It’s no wonder why it was named the “Best Hotel Bar” by the Bangkok Bar Awards. Negroni Week ended on June 30th with a closing party held at The House on Sathorn next to Bangkok’s W Hotel. The House On Sathorn resides inside a 127-year-old colonial mansion on
Sathorn Road in the heart of Bangkok. The mansion has been transformed into a hot venue fuelled with artisanal New Asian Cuisine, signature cocktails, splendid afternoon tea, and experiential vibes.

With the trend for classic and contemporary cocktails at an alltime high, and the Negroni being one of the world’s most popular cocktails, this year’s Negroni Week shaped up to be the best yet. Negroni Week launched in 2013 with about 100 participating bars, and last year’s event welcomed the involvement nearly 10,000 venues in 87 countries, (a 29% increase in participation since 2017) to raise an impressive total of $585,000 for charitable causes in 2018, contributing to a total of nearly $2 million raised since the initiative began. Money raised in Thailand went to the Foundation for the Deaf under the Royal Patronage of H.M. The Queen. Established in 1952, The Foundation for the Deaf in Thailand was set up to cater to the special education needs of members of the community with a hearing disability. The charity provides integrated social service support to people with hearing impairment and their families, across Thailand.

’ve had the pleasure of staying at the Westin Grande Suhumvit hotel multiple times and have always enjoyed the breakfast which takes place at their “Seasonal Tastes” restaurant. On one of my frequent Bangkok trips I decided to check out Seasonal Tastes for dinner because I had been hearing great things about their weekday dinner buffet. Seasonal Tastes offers an enticing range of gourmet international cuisine in a visually dramatic setting including open kitchens and live cooking stations. Whatever you are craving for, their international buffets seem to have it. The Buffet is available Sunday thru Thursday and depending on what night you go you’ll find delectably different rotating highlights. Appetizers include foie gras, Alaskan king crab legs, and Fine de Claire oysters while a Japanese station features sushi and sashimi. Entréesize offerings debut at the BBQ station and range from rock lobster and snow fish to Australian beef tenderloin and lamb cutlets. The Sunday buffet is called “The Best of Everything Signature Items” arraying the rarest, priciest, most premium and popular selections currently flying off the buffet counters Monday & Tuesday’s theme is “From the Silk Road” with succulent Chinese BBQ favorites such as: Peking Duck; Cha Siu Pork; Scallops with XO Sauce; Dim Sums; and freshly baked irresistible Egg Tartlets. If you show up Wednesday or Thursday you’ll find their themed: “Smoke House Flavors” starring: Applewood-Smoked beef brisket; Lamb Rack; and Smothered BBQ Pork Ribs. here are a lot of reasons why Kanchanaburi is a popular destination for weekend getaways from the city. 150 km from Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is small but packed with hidden gems—from historical sites to natural wonders. There are really many things to do here—some of them are quite touristy while others are more off the beaten track. To get the best of what

They’re not joking; unlike other board sports, stand up paddle boarding doesn’t take much technical skill. Unlike kite boarding or kayaking, which require more equipment or are big and bulky, a SUP board is not too heavy and is relatively easy to transport. The paddler typically stands (or kneels) on the board and propulsion is via a single paddle. It can be done on any body of water including rivers, lakes and seas and is not only a lot of fun, but also has great health benefits. Now the benefits start from balance, not just on the board but also in day-to-day activities outside the water. It provides the paddler with a full body workout because almost every muscle in the body is used at some point during paddle boarding. If you are weak or healing from an injury to your muscles and joints, paddle boarding is an excellent exercise to gently increase strength without doing any harm. After spending a day out on a paddleboard, you might feel tired and even a little sore, but it is a good soreness that shows you that you have used your muscles and built up your overall body strength. Sup History The history of stand-up paddle boarding traces back thousands of years ago and across many continents, but its current form and popularity originated in Hawaii in the 1900s. In the 1940s, surf instructors in Waikiki like Duke Kahanamoku and Leroy and Bobby AhChoy would take paddles and stand on their boards to get a better view of the surfers in the water and incoming swells, and from time to time they would surf the waves using the paddle to steer the board. The AhChoy’s in turn introduced their pastime to John Zapotocky, who could certainly be considered the father of modern stand up surfing. John first went to Hawaii in 1940, and instantly fell in love with the ocean. He made his life there from that day on and after seeing Duke Kahanamoku and the other Beach boys like the AhChoy brothers on stand-up boards, he took to it and has been surfing with a paddle ever since. John rode the waves of Waikiki on a SUP board for six decades. For 60 years he would grab his board and paddle from the same rack he kept them on the majority of his lifetime until he died at 95. By 2005, SUP, which had until then been almost entirely a surfing discipline, began to diversify into racing, touring, rivers, yoga, and fishing. t’s seven am, and long lines of golf carts loaded with their player's golf bags are at the ready. Some 25 buggies for the front nine and another 25 for the back nine. Caddies in bibs bearing the name and nationality of the golfer they will accompany for the 18 holes stand beside each cart. All waiting for the nod to set off to their allocated hole for the shot-gun start.

With such scale, onlookers would assume this is some ‘pro’ tour golf event. In fact, this is the Centara World Masters Golf Championship 2019. Asia’s biggest and richest golf week – and open only to Club golfers. A total of 410 golfers and another 70 non-playing partners have descended on Hua Hin for the Centara Masters Golf 2019. A week-long tournament that in its early years mainly attracted
Australian golfers. This year’s field boasts 23 nationalities – fulfilling its goal of being a truly international event. The Championship is a 72-hole single Stableford event with this year’s prize money pool topping one million THB. Participants need to be Club golfers over the age of 35 with an official handicap endorsed by their national golf association. All golfer play a round
at Hua Hin’s top four courses: Black Mountain, Banyan, Springfield, and Imperial Lakeview. This is not a ‘boys own’ golf week though. As is the growing trend in international golf travel, over 40 per cent of the players in this tournament are women. Either golfing partners or women golfers travelling by themselves or in small groups, like the thirteen lady golfers from Western
Australia who’ve made the trip this year without their partners. The event came together out of opportunity. Australian based Go Golfing who specialise in Masters golf events, and Golfasian, Asia’s leading all-inclusive golf travel specialist were looking to host a Masters-style event in Thailand. Hua Hin, ‘Asia & Australasia’s Golf Destination of the Year 2014’ and the ‘2019 Golf Destination of the Year
for Asia’, was an obvious choice for such a tournament. When looking for a hotel partner, the iconic Centara Grand Resort and Villas - one of the ‘grand hotels’ of the east with history and royal patronage dating back to the 1920’s - was a perfect fit. The timing of June also suited Centara and Hua Hin’s golf courses, as this coincided with the region’s tourism ‘green’ season.

Now in its sixth year, the Centara Master Golf Championship is a resounding success with participants often booking themselves in for the next year before leaving this year’s event. And with a cap of around 400 golfers set by organisers, it fills quickly, once the following year's dates are announced. Golfers are grouped in three broad age groupings, by gender, and then handicap, meaning players do not find themselves in embarrassing or intimidating situations where they are mismatched with their playing group. In essence, there is a male and female tournament happening side by side. Add to that, if more than five golfers from the same home club register and play, they automatically go into the Home Club competition. The winner is named at the final presentation dinner, and all golfers in that winning club take home outstanding prizes. The week was not just about golf, as a very active social program was organised. The week started with a welcome reception dinner poolside at Centara. 19th hole festivities played out on the Centara Lobby lawn Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and the week finished with a crescendo Friday evening with a glamorous Presentation dinner. Centara also created two special dinner events for participants – the Chokedee Thai Food Market Tuesday and a beachside BBQ & Seafood market on Thursday.

When asked what makes this event attractive for Club golfers, Go Golfing’s Managing Director Peter McCarthy, explained: “They get to be part of a professionally run tournament on excellent courses. We hope they leave feeling totally spoilt.” Centara World Masters Golf Championship golfers are certainly winners, though they are not the only ones. Thanks to pre and post Championship add-ons, most participants stay between 10 and 11 days taking in the additional golf courses Hua Hin boasts as well as its tourist attractions. Accommodation houses, local restaurants and massage studios, retail outlets, taxi and tuktuks all see a positive flow on. Simple estimates put figures of around 13.5 to 15 million THB as the immediate economic benefit for the community. Hua Hin’s reputation as an outstanding tourism destination as well as a haven for travelling golfers can only be enhanced thanks to the efforts of all involved in making the Centara World Masters Golf Championship a rousing success. Nakhon Si Thammarat
W
hen you think of southern Thailand you probably think of the gorgeous Andaman coast, or some beautiful far flung islands ringed with white sands and turquoise waters. But as the experienced traveler would tell you, if you go off-track, you'd find a lot of hidden gems past the highway. One of them is the second biggest province in the South of Thailand,

Nakhon Si Thammarat (usually shortened to Nakhon and also known as Muang Kon). At present, Nakhon doesn't bear high on most itineraries. This is probably because whilst it is in the south of Thailand, it’s not exactly on the beach, and in the words of the Lonely Planet, “not likely to win any beauty contests”, not in comparison to its surrounding neighbors anyway. But it is an ancient city of great importance
to Thai history, dating back to the 7th century. Nakhon Si Thammarat was once the center of art, culture, and marine trading of the region, proven by abundant antiquities and archaeological evidence discovered here. Nakhon, the capital bearing the same name as the province, was an influential trading port for centuries attracting merchants
from China, India, Sri Lanka and Europe. Previously, the Kingdom of Ligor, the town chronicles of this time are hardly separable from legend, but they do tell of abandonment and the refounding of the town. This was before scholars recognized Nakhon's history as Tambralinga, an ancient kingdom on the Malay Peninsula. At the time of the Sukhothai rule, Nakhon Si Thammarat was already listed as
one of the kingdoms under control of the Thai and it has remained so during most of its history. Although it was usually known as Ligor to European merchants in the 16th century, by the 19th century, it officially became a part of Thailand. It is located on the east side of the Thai peninsula, a couple of hours drive south of Surat Thani, which
most folks will pass through on their way to somewhere like Koh Samui. But even with its interesting history, ancient temples and beautiful lush mountains, Nakhon Si Thammarat is disappointingly underrated. The eclectic charms of the coastal city lies in its variety; brimming with ancient sites and unique cuisine

If you flip a 25 satang coin, you’ll find a gigantic Sri Lankan-style stupa called Phra Borommathat Chedi (the Great Noble Relics Stupa). The iconic Buddhist structure is part of the ancient temple, Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan or Wat Phra Mahathat. It is not just the most important temple in the province, but one of the most important Buddhist sites in the whole of Thailand. The chedi is believed to house a tooth of Lord Buddha. Almost as old as the city itself, the stupa of Wat Phra Mahathat was built in the 13th century as the symbol of Theravada Buddhism. The magical thing about Phra Borommathat Chedi is that it never casts a shadow on the ground! In addition, you can join one of Southern Thailand’s greatest Buddhist festivals, Hae Pha Khuen That. On Makha Bucha Day (the third full moon) and Visakha Bucha Day (the sixth full moon), Buddhists make merit by parading a large piece of cloth up and wrap it around the stupa. A little further down from Wat Phra Mahathat lies Wat Thao Kot. This old riverside temple complex contains five temples that are slowly falling apart. The temples themselves aren’t terribly impressive, but the location, with the jungle reclaiming its own, is very atmospheric. On a walk along the city’s main Ratchadamnoen Road you can discover the manifold traces which these people from so many different cultures and religions left here. The

city walls from the 12th century will give you an impression of how significant this city has once been, and you can also marvel at the wood carvings on the façade of the monks’ residences Wat Wang Tawan Tok. Besides the wide temple area, the city walls are located in the heart of the city, within the public park where you can see many locals doing their evening exercise, with the sunset and various street vendors are set up around park. Moreover, within the same area, not so far, City Pillar Shrine elegantly catches your eyes with its snow-white form. The South also has its own giant swing and it’s one of the only two in Thailand. While there, you’ll find the Ho Phra Isuan and the Ho Phra Narai. Inside these shrines are religious images such as Shiva Linga, the image of Vishnu and other Hindu gods. A visit to the Nang Talung Museum at Ban Suchart Subsin is a real treat and is highly recommended if you are in Nakhon Si Thammarat. The museum features an impressive collection of shadow puppets, collected by the Subsin family from various regions of Thailand and some other countries including China, Cambodia and India. In common with other areas of Asia, Thailand has a long tradition of storytelling using shadow puppets. The content of the stories and the figures used by puppeteers vary depending on the region of Thailand. In the south of Thailand, the shadow puppet performances combine influences from Malaysia and Thai Muslim traditions. National Artist, the late Suchart Subsin, played a pivotal role in preserving this ancient performing art. Ban Suchart Subsin is also a venue where visitors can see southern Thai shadow puppet performances, known as ‘nang talung‘, performed by members of Suchart's family. In ‘nang talung‘ performances at Ban Suchart Subsin the humor can be bawdy and some of the tales of morals and values have been given a clever contemporary twist to keep them relevant to a new generation. Characters from the nang talung plays have become synonymous with the city and depictions of them can be seen in various locations around Nakhon Si Thammarat and on souvenirs from the area. The award-winning museum has won local and international praise for its role in education and preserving ancient folk arts. Visitors to the shadow puppet museum can go inside the workshop to see all aspects involved in making the figures which includes designing and cutting out the patterns, tanning the leather and painting the puppets. The museum is open daily, but it is advisable to call in advance to let them know you are coming so that they can prepare the shadow puppet performance.

Approximately 30 kilometers west of the city, the villagers of Ban Kiriwong have formed a local co-operative producing arts and crafts. The villagers’ lives are entwined with nature and apart from organic fruit farming, many local workshops are available. From fruit processing and soap making to tie-dying and beading, everything is made from materials found in Kiriwong. With river views, some quaint antique shops and good food aplenty, Ban Kiriwong is an interesting half-day tour. The sights of green surroundings, crystal clear streams and majestic mountains are refreshing enough, but the air itself is even more rejuvenating. With Thailand’s purest ozone as the village’s main claim to fame, Kiriwong Village draws a lot of nature lovers, especially city dwellers

and cycling lovers. The village itself sits at the foot of the mountain known as Khao Luang, the highest peak in the South. Khao Luang lies within the vicinity of Khao Luang National Park. Dominated by verdant jungles, the area offers ultimate tranquility with a sense of adventure. The park is also home to waterfalls like Krung Ching Waterfall, caves, over 300 kinds of orchids and a type of fern that is known to exist for 180 million years. Pak Phanang is one of the best-known destinations in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. Jutting out into the sea, Pak Phanang (locally known as Pak Nang) was once a bustling port town. Though a severe storm hit the area in 1962 and Pak Phanang is no longer as busy as it was, its charms have recently been restored. The district is home to a royal
project on the river estuary which separates sea water from the fresh water upstream creating opportunities for farmers and fishermen alike. Pak Phanang is also home to the unique ‘bird condominiums’ where swifts birds' nests are harvested to make birds nest soup. You can also stroll in the 100-year-old Pak Phanang Market and take in the sight of old wooden houses. The locals here live simply— fishing and running their own shops selling sweets and fruit including Siamese Ruby pomelo. One of the top hand-woven products in Thailand, Yan Lipao basketry was born here in Muang Kon. The fine, strong vines of the lipao plant are transformed into elegant yet durable baskets, bags, boxes and a lot of other utensils by the meticulous hands of the locals.
The pristine beaches of Khanom are the perfect antidote to claims that beaches in southern Thailand are crowded and too commercialized. Khanom is famous for its pink dolphins, known in Thai as ‘loma si chompoo‘, which tend to hang around specific areas off the coast increasing the likelihood of seeing them if you arrange a trip with the local boatmen. The easiest way to get to Nakhon Si Thammarat from Bangkok is by air. Nok Air and Air Asia both operate flights to the small airport, 15 km north of the city centre. Air Asia also operates a direct service from Chiang Mai to nearby Surat Thani where it's possible to make transfers by taxi or mini-bus south to Nakhon Si Thammarat. If you are staying in the beach area of Khanom in the north of Nakhon Si Thammarat province, the airport at Surat Thani airport is another option. Alternatively, you can take the train from the Hua Lamphong train station in Bangkok. The journey is longer, taking fifteen hours although you can also take the bus which departs from Bangkok's Southern Bus terminal. If you're in the region to explore Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan or Ko Tao, Surat Thani has good connections with Nakhon Si Thammarat. Air-conditioned buses are frequent between the two cities taking approximately 2.5 hours. There are also regular buses to Khanom if you are heading to the beach. A charming alternative away from the busier tourist areas in the south of Thailand, Nakhon Si Thammarat is more than an ancient city. It has survived and flourished. Ruins of ancient city walls have been revived. Century-old houses are wellpreserved. And don't skip out on the food. Families have long since passed down recipes for local delicacies such as bak kut teh (pork bone tea soup), kanom jeen sen sod (freshly prepared Thai rice flour noodles) and pad mee muang kon (Nakhon Si Thammaratstyle stir-fried noodles). So, whether you're looking for the authentic Thai experience or just want to get away from foreigners for a while, Nakhon Si Thammarat is the place for you.

We try to consistently pursue life goals that will make us and our closest relations happy; a trait that many individuals search for their entire lives. “No people can be truly happy if they do not feel that they are choosing the course of their own life,” states the World Happiness Report 2012. The report also found that having this freedom of choice is one of the six factors that explain why some people are happier than others. In his best-selling first book, “Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart”: Thirty True Things You Need to Know Now”, Dr Gordon Livingston, a psychiatrist who’s been listening to people’s problems for decades, revealed thirty bedrock truths about life, and how best to live it. In his capacity as a psychiatrist, Dr Livingston listened to people talk about their lives and the many ways people induced unhappiness on themselves. In his book, he brings his insight and wisdom to the subjects of happiness, fear and courage.

“Life’s two most important questions are “Why?” and “Why not?” The trick is knowing which one to ask.” Acquiring some understanding of why we do things is often a prerequisite to change. This is especially true when talking about repetitive patterns of behavior that do not serve us well. This is what Socrates meant when he said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” That more of us do not take his advice is testimony to the hard work and potential embarrassment that selfexamination implies.” As people age, their temporal focus changes — whether they’re likely to be focused on the here and now or on the future. And it’s this temporal focus that drives the basic effects. It has been theorized that individuals’ views of happiness depend far more upon their sense of time than their age per se. Most people operate on autopilot, doing the same things today that didn’t work yesterday. They rarely stop to measure the impact of their actions on themselves and others, and how those actions affect their total

well-being. Most people know what is good for them; they know what will make them feel better. They don’t avoid meaningful life habits because of ignorance of their value, but because they are no longer “motivated” to do them, Dr Livingston found. They are waiting until they feel better. Frequently, it’s a long wait, he says. Life is too short to wait for a great day to invest in better life experiences. If your daily actions and choices are making you unhappy, make a deliberate choice to change direction. No matter how bleak or desperate a situation may appear to look, you always have a choice. When you begin to shift your perspective, the very things around you that seem to be so stressful tend to look a little brighter. Suddenly the doom and gloom that weighed heavy on your chest seems to be just another drop in the bucket. “People often come to me asking for medication. They are tired of their sad mood, fatigue, and loss of interest
in things that previously gave them pleasure.” Their days are routine: unsatisfying jobs, few friends, lots of boredom. They feel cut off from the pleasures enjoyed by others. Here is what I tell them: The good news is that we have effective treatments for the symptoms of depression; the bad news is that medication will not make you happy. Happiness is not simply the absence of despair. It is an affirmative state in which our lives have both meaning and pleasure.” “In general we get, not what we deserve, but what we expect,” he says. It’s easy to think you’ve done everything on your own, that your achievements are your own. For some people, this might be true. For most of us, it is most definitely not. For most of us, we are where we are because someone cared. Someone didn’t look at you and say “screw it”. Someone looked at you and said “he/she needs a hand” and then proceeded to lend you that hand.
We should live our lives on our terms. But we shouldn’t be flippant with our relationships and act as if we can live in social isolation. Sometimes the only thing keeping us sane and moving forward are the bonds we’ve forged with the people who matter. But many people wait for something to happen or someone to help them live their best lives. They expect others to make them happy. They think they have lost the ability to improve their lives. The thing that characterizes those who struggle emotionally is that they have lost, or believe they have lost, their ability to choose those behaviors that will make them happy, says Dr Livingston. It does not come from an external source, whether that is a person, a job, a boss, a friend, a laptop or a car. It cannot be avoided by blaming others, either, because that’s just a short-term fix. You create your own happiness and you work on it like you work on developing any other habit in life: every single day. If you expect others to make you happy, you will always be disappointed. Of course, it’s not easy to accept that ultimately, we’re on our own but then again, what is? That algebra quiz you took in fourth grade was difficult but now you can do it with your eyes closed. Obstacles are only as big as they seem. Your mind has a way of rising to the occasion. Challenge it, and it will reward you. So many people are stuck in life because of fear. “The most secure prisons are those we construct for ourselves.” Explains Dr. Livingston Always take the long view in life. Be patient. The forest is never just the trees. Markets crash and markets rebound. Today’s setbacks aren’t deadly. With the right attitude, you’ll get over them - and then some. We have to work to learn to accept change and just go with it. There is a rhythm at each stage of life as sure as there will be different partners, places, jobs, illnesses, friends and pairs of pants. Sure, go ahead, get caught up in the moment but remember, when the music changes (and it will) don't stop dancing. Listen. That's when you'll start to tune into the music of you. As we grow older and wiser, we begin to realize what we need and what we need to leave behind. Sometimes there are things in our lives that aren’t meant to stay. Sometimes the changes we don’t want are the changes we need to grow. And sometimes walking away is a step forward.

Mister National Universe Returns To Thailand
M
ister National Universe returned to Thailand for its 3rd year. From June 24th to July 1st, 19 men, each representing their own country, traveled to the Kingdom to compete in the hopes of winning the title and bringing honor to their Country. This international pageant for men was founded and is owned by Thai entrepreneur, media personality and the creative director of this Magazine, Ms. Tanya Siri Vijitsomphong. Ms. Vijitsomphong created Mister National Universe as a way to promote tourism around the world with an emphasis on Thailand. This year’s host cities were Kanchanaburi and Hua Hin. Countries represented included Bhutan, Brazil, India, Laos, Malaysia, Manipur, Mindoro, Moldova, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Russia, Serbia, Thailand, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Vietnam. The men landed in Thailand on the 24th of June and attended the sash ceremony held at the home of Socialite & Philanthropist Khun Sumanee Guna Kasem. Khun Sumanee has been the Honorary Chairwoman of Mister National Universe since it’s inception. Later in the evening the contestants attended the launch party for Negroni Week held at the famous Bamboo Bar inside Bangkok’s Iconic Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Early morning on Tuesday the 25th saw the contestants, national directors, national & international media along with the organizing staff loading onto a coach headed for Away Kanchanaburi Dheva Mantra Resort & Spa. The beautiful resort, located on the river Kwai in Kanchanaburi, was the Official Host Hotel for MNU 2019 during their stay in Kanchanaburi. Upon arrival they were greeted by Khun Thidarat Chansiri, the General Manager of Away Kanchanaburi who welcomed them with a speech. In the evening the MNU group were treated to an official welcome dinner on the bank of the river Kwai, hosted by Khun Thidarat and her team.

Wednesday saw the men up early as they headed down to the river to give alms to the monks who came by via longtail boat. After some morning gym time everyone boarded boats to take a sightseeing tour of Kanchanaburi via the river. After the river tour it was time for a Thai cooking class put on by Away Kanchanaburi’s head chef who taught them how to make Pad Thai Khung Sod & Tom Kha Kai. Once the boys mastered Thai cooking they were off on more site seeing, this time via the Kanchanaburi Train. The sightseeing continued on Thursday with the men going on a bus tour and stopping to learn how Thai silk is made. Back at the hotel they were met by the crew from SUP Hire Thailand who brought all the equipment to give the fellas lessons on SUP or Stand Up Paddling. After their SUP lessons their education continued, this time learning how to hand make a Thai Krathong. Later in the evening they were treated to a River Comber Dinner and an early mini Loy Krathong Festival where they launched their Krathong’s into the river. Friday was a little more leisurely for the men as they just participated in a National Costume Photoshoot which gave them a few hours of free time before boarding the coach once again for the trip to the Holiday Inn Vana Nava Hua Hin, the Official Host Hotel during the Hua Hin portion of their stay in the Kingdom. Due to weather and traffic the boys didn’t have much time to unwind before they all headed to the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort for the Official Hua Hin Welcome Dinner. Saturday the men visited the Thai Sturgeon farm in Hua Hin and had dinner at the Hua Hin Beer Garden rounding out their evening at Cheers Wine Bar. Sunday was a busy day with the men up early to give alms to the Monks passing by the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort & Spa and then back to the Holiday Inn to greet the pageants Honorary Chairwoman Khun Sumanee Guna Kasem upon her arrival from Bangkok. Later they enjoyed some time at the Vana Nava Water Jungle located right next door to their hotel. Lunch at the Prestige Restaurant was followed by a tour of the Mali Prestige housing estate by Chayuta "Joy"Bunyaphureesawat, owner of the restaurant and partner in Orchid Palm Homes, the developer of Mali Prestige. Dinner saw the men at the Nai Thong Ghonn Restaurant in Koh Takiab.

Monday the 1st of July was by far the most stressful day with judges interviewing each candidate and then rehearsals for the evening’s Coronation night festivities which kicked off at 6pm. Bangkok’s Independent Wine & Spirit’s (IWS) & Hua Hin’s Cheers Bar were the drink sponsors for the evening and did a outstanding job heightening the festive mood as guests arrived. Khun Sumanee and her entourage arrived and were ushered into a private waiting room and later appeared for photos with celebrities, judges & guests with the ballroom opening at 7pm as the live broadcast was beginning which ended up reaching almost a million people. The show kicked off with the National Costume Competition with everyone shouting out their favorites. The judges scores were tallied and Bhutan proved to be the favorite. It was then time for the opening speeches starting with Khun Sumanee Guna Kasem and then Russ Downing, Managing Director of HOT Hua Hin Co. Ltd., came on stage to thank all the sponsors, judges and guests. With speeches out of the way the crowd was entertained with the Jazz saxophone of Khun Tua and then it was time for the swimsuit contest which was won by Mister Brazil. After another musical interlude the men came out again but this time in formal wear and were each asked the same question with a strict sixty second time limit, “How do you turn negative thoughts into positive ones?” As the judges tallied their scores Ms. Tanya Siri Vijitsomphong, Founder & CEO of Mister National Thailand and Mister National Universe came on stage to present the award for Best National Director. In year’s past this award has gone to just one National Director but this year it went to three, Puerto Rico, Mindoro Island & India. And with that, after careful consideration by the judges, it was time to narrow down the contestants from 19 to 10. Those making the cut included; Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, United Kingdom, Manipur, Malaysia, Brazil, Mindoro Island, Russia & Puerto Rico. Each of the 10 men then took turns picking a sheet of a paper from the M.C. which had a question on it and had 30 seconds to answer. A few of the questions asked included:“What have you dreamed of doing for a long time but haven’t done yet, and why haven’t you?” “What do you believe is your greatest accomplishment so far?” & “How are you different from your other competitors?”

After another musical interlude, while the judges did their scoring & with the crowd shouting out their favorites the top 5 were announced. The top 5 finalists were; United Kingdom, Mindoro, Manipur, Vietnam & Malaysia. The 5 men were each then given 60 seconds to answer the same question, “What is the equality problem in your country and how do you think the problem can be solved?” With the questions completed and while the judges went to work making up their minds, Mister National Universe 2018, Mr. Phanendra Prasai from Nepal, came on stage to address the audience and speak about his year as Mister National Universe. Following Mr. Prasai, all the men came back on the stage for the announcements of the Special Awards. The first was Mister Fashion Icon which went to Denis Kurchenko from Russia. The next special award was Mister Photogenic which was given to Subash Chaudhary from Nepal. Next up was the Mister Elegance Award which went to Axel Cardenales from Puerto Rico. Mister Popular Vote followed and was won Duc Hieu Dang from Viet Nam. The last Special Award, Mister Congeniality, which was voted on by the candidates themselves went to Milos Stanojevic from Serbia. And then it was time. The judges tallied scores were given to the MC’s and the winners of Mister National Universe 2019 were announced. Fourth Runner-up, with the title “Mister National Intercontinental” went to Alexander Coles, United Kingdom. Third Runner-up with the title “Mister National Earth went to Duc Hieu Dang, Vietnam. Second Runner-up with the title “Mister National Globe went to Caleb Zheng Eg French, Malaysia. First Runner-up with the title “Mister National World went to Jan Kim Santos Vergel, Mindoro Island (Philippines) with the Mister National Universe 2018 Grand Winner being Vikash Usham, Manipur (India).

From the crowd noise it was obvious that the judges had made the right choice. Khun Sumanee Guna Kasem then appeared on stage to give the winning Sash & Trophy to Vikash as well as the other winners. Once the award ceremony had ended guests enjoyed taking pictures with all of the contestants and Mister National Universe 2019 came to a close.

Your finances are not looking as good as you expected. One stressful event after another seems to be your life’s current theme. Over time, you may find yourself less and less able to keep your level of stress within a manageable range, and you begin to feel the effects both physically and mentally.
Three Kinds of Stress 1. Acute stress – stress caused by a specific situation which is usually short-lived. 2. Episodic Acute Stress – A series of untimely and tragic life events which cause stress; also may relate to an individual’s predisposed nature to react to regular situations with high levels of stress, as well a cycle of stress, worry and anger. 3. Chronic Stress – A build-up of stress over time which eventually creates a chronic strain, which can have a significant impact on one’s physical and mental health.
Symptoms of Stress Stress can produce a number of physical symptoms, some of which you may not even realize are the result of stress. Symptoms include: • Digestion issues, including diarrhea. • Headaches and body pains. • Shaking and sweating. • Distracted mental state. • Low energy, feeling exhausted, and general moods of apathy • High blood pressure and other heartrelated conditions. • Getting irritated easily, quick to feel anger. • Feelings of depression; feeling nervous, anxious and/or disoriented.
Preventing Stress and Finding Happiness and Mindfulness 4. Find some fun – If you are frequently stressed out, take some time for yourself and have some fun. If it has been a long time since you traveled, took a bike ride
or read a book, then it is time to start actively incorporating enjoyable activities back into your life. 5. Talk to someone – If you are experiencing stress, talking about it usually helps. Get in touch with a friend or talk with your significant other about how you are feeling. 6. Be mindful – Develop mental and physical relaxation techniques so that when you do encounter stressful situations, you will be better able to react more evenly and level-headed instead of flying into a rage or having a panic attack. 7. Reflect – After a stressful event, do some self-reflection, either alone or with a friend. Evaluate your reactions, think about how you might have reacted better during the situation, and consider how to avoid a similar situation in the future. 8. Plan ahead – Plan for recurring events that bring stress into your life. If a monthly meeting requiring you to make a presentation causes you stress, prepare as early as possible, practice, and rehearse for it. 9. Talk to a doctor – If you are experiencing more frequent episodes of stress, talk to your doctor. He or she can check for any underlying conditions that may be contributing to your stress and help you to better manage everyday stress through lifestyle modifications.
