Pick your most comfortable chair, put up your feet, and turn to page 30 to learn how to ignite your passion. Angelo Kafantaris, CEO of Hyperion doesn’t think his company’s Hyperion XP-1 is a huge deal. That might seem like an peculiar view, coming from the man that sits at the top of a company that’s debuting a 356 km/h exotic car after nearly a decade of development. But the XP-1, with its claimed 2.2-second zero-to-97-km/h time and carbon titanium monocoque chassis, is akin to a signal flare blasted skyward to draw attention to a less sexy but vastly more important topic: energy infrastructure. Specifically, hydrogen, which is what the XP-1 uses for energy storage in lieu of a battery. “There are enough car companies,” Kafantaris says. “We’re an energy company that’s building this car to tell a story.” Put on your racing gloves and turn to page 46 to learn why the Hyperion XP-1 should be your next Hyper Car.

Catamarans, also known as MultiHulls or Cats, can be powered by sails or engines and are two hulls joined by a frame. Invented by South Pacific islanders, the twin-hull design was first observed in India in the late 17th century. Catamarans were more or less ignored in the West until 1877 when an American named Nathanael Herreshoff began developing and racing Catamarans. His designs were so much faster than traditional monohull designs that sailing authorities banned them from competition for nearly a century. Today, Catamarans are a popular design for recreational and racing sailboats. They are also being used as efficient, low-wake ferries, such as the Pattaya/Hua Hin Ferry. There are many reasons to choose a Catamaran over a monohull. The most apparent advantage is overall stability. Because of the Catamaran’s design, it does not heel underway and won’t roll while anchored, which adds to its comfort factor and all but eliminates sea-sickness. By now you have your boat shoes handy. Put them on and turn to page 62 to read why a Cat should be moored at your dock slip. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s HOT. We hope you enjoy the read.

Vana Nava Sky welcomes Depp from Bangkok’s Rabbit Hole On Saturday evening, August 1st, Vana Nava Sky, the Holiday Inn Resort Vana Nava Hua Hin’s Signature Sky Bar, presented another episode of their Mixology Series bringing multi-awardwinning Noppasate Hirunwathit, nicknamed “Depp” from Bangkok’s famed Rabbit Hole bar. In 2018 Depp was named “Rising Star Bartender” Thailand by the Bangkok Bar Awards, among many other accolades. Depp crafted some of his favorite premium cocktails for the guests using Black Tears Spiced Rum, a Rum that Depp is a Brand Ambassador for. Guests also enjoyed plenty of tasty treats fresh from the Vana Nava Sky’s kitchen. Rabbit Hole is a speakeasy in Thonglor that is a collision of steampunk-in-
dustrial-meets-plush living space over a split-level setting. The ground floor provides front-row seats by the bar and its massive collection of booze is displayed over a rose-gold booze rack that stretches up to the second and more intimate level, where guest DJs can be found mixing a set of disco, house and other feel-good dance numbers that up the ante as the night progresses. Vana Nava Sky Bar provides a drinking and dining experience like no other in Hua Hin. Guests can sit inside at the long bar and marvel at worldrenowned interior designer Ashley Sutton’s imaginative visions or dine alfresco to take full advantage of the view; the highest vantage point in Hua Hin.
For those who want a real bird’s eye view, take a walk on the Vana Nava Sky Deck; it’s as if you’re walking on air. The 60 square-meter glass-bottomed observation deck extends beyond the hotel’s rooftop, providing an exhilarating view of Vana Nava Water Jungle and the surrounding area. Dusit Central Park’ Unveils a Stunning New ‘Green Lung’ in the Heart of Bangkok Since 1970, Dusit Thani Bangkok has welcomed visitors with warmth, grace and hospitality. Now, on its historic and iconic site, where the action of the city meets the green expanse of Lumpini Park, the hotel will undergo a bold transformation, becoming part of a one-of-a-kind mixed-use development that will set the standard for a new way to shop, stay, work and live. Dusit Central Park recently unveiled a stunning Roof Park that will become an integral part of its grand-scale mixed-use development at the intersection of Silom Road. Under the concept ‘Here for Bangkok’, this expansive 20-metre high landscaped garden extends from the top of the 3rd floor continuously through to the 7th floor,

creating a verdant 7-rai elevated public park that will transform the heart of Bangkok. Prioritising environmental responsibility and quality of life over profit, this green city concept will revolutionise Thailand’s prime real estate development sector; enhancing the value of one of Bangkok’s most desirable locations by providing easy access to health promoting public green spaces. This prime 7-rai plot opposite Lumpini Park could have easily been developed with maximum profit in mind, but Vimarn Suriya sees things differently. Ms. Suphajee Suthumpun, Chief Executive Officer of Dusit International Group, disclosed that she envisions the ‘Roof Park’ as the green
heart of Dusit Central Park. This vision will see Bangkok’s finest real estate transformed into a substantial green social space for the public and community to enjoy. Ms. Suphajee said that real estate development by Dusit Thani Group will progress hand-in-hand with urban planning and community development. This will usher in a new metropolitan era, bringing Bangkok on par with other major world cities. The design of this unique elevated park will bring nature into the city, providing lush panoramic views that extend all the way to Lumpini Park. This will create a a sustainable ecosystem that blends urban ecology with natural elements to enhance quality of life for city
HOT AROUND BANGKOK dwellers. The Roof Park is sure to become an outstanding feature of Dusit Central Park, transforming the development into an instantly recognisable and iconic destination in Bangkok, one that will attract locals and guests alike. This vast green Roof Park situated in the very centre of the city will incorporate 3 fundamental design principles: (1) Preserve Dusit Thani’s unique Thai cultural identity and heritage, inspired by lush tropical plants and cascading waterfalls; (2) Create community friendly green social spaces easily accessible to the public for relaxation and lifestyle activities; (3) Form a sustainable and thriving urban ecosystem based on careful selection of local plants species native to Bangkok. Based on a study conducted to learn about native plant species found in the Bangkok area from references found in classical Thai literature such as Niras Phukhaothong and Niras Suphanburi, indigenous trees and flowers will be carefully selected to beautifully landscape the elevated Roof Park. Trees, flowers and grasses of varying sizes such as Pandan, Water Pennywort, Homalomena Rebescens, Peace Lily, Black Colocasia, Sonneratia Caseolaris
and Equisetum Debile are just a few that will be included. “Vimarn Suriya Co., Ltd. has commissioned Landscape Collaboration Co., Ltd. to design the landscape architecture for this entire Roof Park project, with an aim to add another green area to Bangkok which will help circulate fresh air and alleviate urban heat. The area will be fully functional, creating a diverse ecosystem that will be ecologically sustainable and environmentally friendly,” said Ms. Suphajee. Designed to resemble a sloping hillside, this 7-rai elevated public park will sit at the centre of the capital, surrounded by Dusit Central Park’s high rise structures. A lush, natural atmosphere will be created via an assortment of plants, big and small. Shady trees, flowering plants and green grasses will populate each level of the elevated garden along with a cascading waterfall that extends from the 3rd floor of the retail structure to the 7th floor of Dusit Central Park. This environmentally conscious design perfectly creates an exceptionally natural ambience that blends harmoniously into the existing cityscape. No matter where you stand in the elevated garden, your eyes will naturally be
drawn towards Lumpini Park’s sweeping panoramic vistas, echoing those of Central Park in New York City. This landmark development by Dusit Central Park will effectively form the largest and only green lung in metropolitan Bangkok by seamlessly blending together two extensive green areas. Designed to maximise usage and functionality in order to enhance quality of life in the city, the Roof Park will bring people closer to nature and each other within a flourishing green social setting. No matter your age or interests, many activities and leisure areas are available for your enjoyment. Leisure facilities and lifestyle amenities on offer include dining options at Food Passage, an outdoor picnic area, a children’s playground, jogging and cycling tracks, as well as a nature track for active walking or a relaxing stroll in natural surroundings. Furthermore, the park provides spaces for various lifestyle and cultural activities such as art exhibitions, music performances, movies, workshops and other mini events.

baladas setting a beautiful mood to our evening. Right up came two fantastic frozen margaritas, greatly balanced, with a deep soothing taste, slushy, fresh and a perfect companion for the rest of our evening. Subsequently the first treat: a serving table came rolling in, on top of which sat a large mortar with which a smiling sous-chef made us an absolutely fabulous guacamole: using the imported Morelos Avocado (known for its soft-
ness), it bore a very subtle but distinguished taste, creamy, slightly spicy, and well balanced. With a characteristic touch of coriander, it complemented with a brand of outstanding tortilla chips made with spinach and to be dipped in two delicious sauces, which provided a great contrast of textures. Next was a dish of true beauty, brought in a platter with ice and scattered sesame seeds: a Tuna & Sea Bass Ceviche from Baja California, compris-

ing a combination of avocado, mango, coriander, Mexican chilli crispy tortillas, lemon juice, orange juice and olive oil, it rendered us lost for words. This is a dish, which is consumed on Saturday morning, with a nice cold beer on a sunny day. Tangy, with a sweet fruity touch from the mango, prolonged onto a whole-bodied spicy flavour of the sea bass, ending in a deep flavour from the avocado and the coriander. To go with it, the crispy tortillas added a fabulous
texture to the body. A true explosion of flavour. Then came a typical dish of Shrimps Al Ajillo (dry chilli). With its apple cider, array of spices, red wine, olive oil and other secrets, it granted a fantastic bang of tastes. The impressive freshness of the shrimp combined amazingly with the spice of the ajillo, which gave it a signature strength. With a soft and meaty aftertaste, it made for an astonishing experience.
We then turned our attention to a classic Taco de Carnitas with sweet milk. Made of incredibly soft pulled pork, crispy pork skin, golden in colour with a sauce that granted a contrasting spicy touch, it was capped off with the aromatic essence given by the splash of tequila. Truly vibrant.

We were then treated to a dish of fantastic beauty: Enchiladas made in the most elaborate of ways, with roasted tomatoes, garlic, jalapeños, coriander, boiled and blended made into a marvellous sauce. Below it was, nicely wrapped up, a combination of chicken tinga, chipotle sauce, a fifty-fifty cheddar-mozzarella mix and fabulous accessory of refried beans. Smoky, spicy, tangy, wholesome and filled with character, this was a truly special one. It’s not as if we weren’t full by this point, but dishes were so delicious that we could not force ourselves to stop. Surely enough, dessert made it into us – and how impressed we were. First up an absolutely baffling concept: Tres Leches, which translates to Three Milks, is a dish with a portion of vanilla biscuit which has been infused with condensed, evaporated and normal milk, to then be subsequently boiled with vanilla and sugar before being left to gather flavours for three days. The softness of this dish was aweinducing, as infused with the palate upon every bite and seamlessly melted in the mouth upon the slightest of touches. Aromatic, rich in flavour and beautifully crafted, it was a spectacular experience for the lovers of texture. Served next to it was the strawberry ice cream. Homemade, incredibly balanced, with fantastic feel and a touch of chocolate, it concluded an evening of wonders.

In 2016, Janet received The Transformational Leadership Council award for her excellence in leadership. Her path to where she is today started when she was a young woman teaching transcendental meditation at a meditation center. It was a non-paying job and she slept on the floor. She loved teaching meditation and loved being around spiritual people. She was offered a Silicon Valley job with the possibility of making lots of money but it turned out to be a job she hated as she felt unfulfilled. One day she saw a flyer for a Success Seminar in San Francisco. At the Seminar, the speaker said that the top 100 successful people in the United States were all doing what they considered to be their top 5 passions. And with that, the light bulb switched on. Janet thought to herself that if she could figure out what her top 5 passions were then she could be successful. It was through that self-discovery that the Passion Test was born. HOT Magazine had the very distinct pleasure of sitting down with Janet to discuss her life, her Passion Test Program and the positive life transformations that are happening on a global scale.

HM: Janet, you have such a beaming, happy, positive attitude that radiates from you. What was your life like growing up, where were you born and do your siblings have a similar outlook? JA: My mom used to tell me I was born passionate. She said my brother Johnny who was 2 years older than me, and my sister Mickey who was 5 years older than me, unfortunately, didn’t have the same enthusiasm as I did for life. My mom used to say it was no surprise that I was born in California because I had as much energy as the California sunshine. As a child, I had the most magical relationship with my mom. My brother Johnny, and my sister Mickey, and even my dad, were all a little jealous of the amazing relationship we had. When I started kindergarten, my mom would miss me so much she would tell the school principal that I had to go to the doctor, just so she and I could play together. We’d watch our favorite Shirley Temple movies in bed and eat “fishes in the dishes” – sardines and crackers. Our connection was truly magical. However, when I was seven, my mom’s demons came back to haunt her and she became an alcoholic. My

world cracked open. As a child, my first thought was, “Did I do this?” From then on I became a very misunderstood and very unhappy person and until my early twenties, my world had become a nightmare. Then I learned how to meditate, and opened myself up to the world of self help. It was then everything started to change. HM: In interviews, you’ve mentioned that you had your epiphany moment after listening to a speaker at a success seminar in San Francisco. Was it truly at that moment that you saw your life’s path ahead of you? JA: Yes. I remember the moment as if it were yesterday. I was sitting in a seminar in San Francisco, California and the speaker started sharing about a survey that had been given to the 100 most successful people in the United States, and what the survey had found, was that all 100 of these people were all living what they considered to be their top 5 passions. When I heard that my whole world stopped. I remember the seminar leader went on to talk about “dressing for success” but I was frozen, all I could think about was, “if I could just figure out how to know what my top 5 passions were, I’d be like all those other successful people.”
In that moment, many years ago, sitting in that Seminar, was the birth of what is now known all over the world as “The Passion Test®,” the number one tool to help you get clear about the things that matter most to you, your passions. HM: The Passion Test® has become such a global phenomenon, what can you tell us about it? Is it a single test or multiple tests? JA: The Passion Test® is the only test you will never fail. It’s one exercise after another to help you gain a level of clarity about the areas of your life that are important. Health, relationships, career, spirituality, fun, environment, education, etc. Once you start to get clear on you’re your passions are in these areas, then you can start to magnetize those things to you. What we say in “The Passion Test®,” is “When you are clear, what you choose to have show up in your life will, and only to the extent that you are clear. That, clarity is power.”

Our passions, the things we love most in life, are the pipelines to our soul. They put us in direct connection with the deepest part of our own nature. It doesn’t matter how silly or how profound the things we love may be, when we choose in favor of them, they will lead us on to the fulfillment of our purpose in life. This is the role and purpose of The Passion Test®, to systematically allow each of us to gain clarity about what we love, about what really matters to us. Once we’ve done that, then our simple (or sometimes challenging) task is to choose for what we love. HM: What is the number one thing that stops people from living a passionate life? JA: 3 things: False beliefs, false ideas, false concepts. In other words, thoughts like: • I can’t make money from the things I’m passionate about • I don’t have the skills to be really successful • I don’t know enough • I’m too old. It’s too late for me. The reality is that these limiting beliefs are thoughts you hold that are Simply not true. They are our of sync with reality.

How long it takes you to fulfill your dreams is directly related to your beliefs. When you feel truly passionate about something, you will always have the ability to create it in your life.
constantly creating your life, we all are. We create our lives out of the things to which we give our attention, and you attract into your life more of what you put your attention on.
You’re too old? Do you know that most millionaires are made after the age of fifty-five. While he cooked chicken for years, it wasn’t until Colonel Sanders was sixty-two that he started Kentucky Fried Chicken.
If your attention is on the things you don’t have, all the problems in your life, all the bad things that are happening to you, then you are creating more of that. If you want more problems, more challenges, more unhappiness, then give attention to those things. If you want to find your purpose and live a passion filled life, then give your attention to the things that create those feelings. When you discover your deepest passions, you connect with the essence of who you are. The key to success in life is to live aligned with your passions and your personal destiny will unfold naturally and effortlessly.
No matter what limiting belief you hold, there is evidence in the world to the contrary. Even if there is no one who have ever done what you are passionate about doing, there is abundant evidence of people who have been successfully doing what others thought was impossible. HM: Many people live a day to day existence without a compass showing them the way to a more fulfilled life. Is that dealt with when taking the passion test? JA: Yes, one of the things we tell people is that “Your passions are breadcrumbs that lead you on to the path of your destiny.” We repeat over and over that you are
HM: In your seminars you teach a formula for a passionate life that entails 3 words; intention, attention and no tension. Can you expand on those 3 words for us? JA: Intention – Attention – No Tension

Intention means consciously stating what you choose to create in your life. We all are creating our lives all the time. It’s just that most people do it unconsciously. They believe that things are happening TO them, and as a result, that’s what they create. The Passion Test® process allows you to clarify your intentions so that you can begin living them. Attention – “What you put your attention on grows stronger in your life.” In The Passion Test we say that “Action engages attention.” Taking whatever action you can think to take in support of following your passions keeps your attention engaged in living those passions. No Tension – This is the element many people miss. There are two aspects to “no tension.” The first is to perform action from that state of calmness and peace inside. Developing that habit of living from a state of

inner peace is why Transcendental Meditation® (www.tm.org) has been such an important part of my life. Once you have done all you can think to do, then let go. When you hold on to your own ideas of how your passions will get fulfilled, it’s like stepping on your own hose. The flow of infinite intelligence is cut off. In my experience, you can’t know how fulfillment will show up in your life. This is why one of the seven keys to living a passionate life my book, “The Passion Test®” is: “Stay Open.” HM: You have said, “Living your passion is living in your integrity”, what do you mean by that? JA: Science talks about how we don’t exist in isolation. That each of us are part of a unified field. Imagine if everyone on the planet were living their passions full out and giving maximum to the world. What would our world
be like? Pretty amazing wouldn’t you agree? So how does one give maximum? By getting clear on the things that matter most to them and consistently choosing in favor of those things whenever faced with a choice, a decision or an opportunity. Always choosing in favor of your passions. Staying true, no matter what, to the things that have greatest meaning and purpose for you. When you can give maximum to yourself, by choosing in favor of your passions, that is how you can give maximum to others. HM: From your bestselling books and your seminars, you have come to know and work with such luminaries as the Dalai Lama, Sir Richard Branson, Stephen Covey, Nobel Laureate F. W. deKlerk amongst many other notables. What’s it like being in a room with such major cultural personalities?
JA: Exciting, fun, joyful, passionate, loving, all of the good feelings, seriously! These giants have trained their minds to consistently choose in favor of the things that have greatest meaning for them. Plus, they don’t put their attention on limiting beliefs. Because of this, they are powerful beyond measure. And because of this, just being who they are, teaches others how to be more fearless and resolute in following their dreams and passions. They are what I call, “the teachers living the teaching.” Which means that just their mere presence uplifts all those around them. Does it get any better than this?! HM: To take the passion test, do people need to buy your book or can it be taken online?
JA: There are many ways you can take “The Passion Test.” One way is by reading the book, another way is by attending one of our online programs, or you can experience it “live” by one of our 3000 Certified Passion Test facilitators in over 65 countries. To find out a way that is best for you, go to www.thepassiontest.com
And, to answer your question, I have two homes. One in a little town called “Rungsted” in Denmark which overlooks the ocean, and the other home is in Italy, in a beautiful forested area called Gignese, that overlooks the majestic lake, Lago Maggiore. HM: Thank you Janet
HM: Finally, when we spoke last, you had commented on your constant travel, country after country after country. Do you ever take a holiday and if so, where do you like to go to recharge your batteries and where is home for you? JA: Seriously? My life is a holiday. One of my passions is to love everything I do, so I always make sure no matter where I am or what I am doing, there is lots of fun attached to my agenda.

Hyperion XP-1,
A 355 KM/h Hydrogen -Powered Hypercar
46
HOT Magazine
A
ngelo Kafantaris, CEO of Hyperion doesn’t think his company’s Hyperion XP-1 is a huge deal. That might seem like a peculiar view, coming from the man that sits at the top of a company that’s debuting a 355 KM/h exotic car after nearly a decade of development. “We’re an energy company that’s building this car to tell a story.”
HOT Magazine
47
And the story with hydrogen, right now, is that it’s a regional oddball, an offbeat option for Californians who want to out-tech their Tesla-driving neighbors. The benefits of hydrogen have always been clear—quick refueling and an essentially infinite supply, assuming you have a source of electricity to crack off your H atoms. The drawbacks are infrastructure and expense. Most of us don’t live anywhere near a hydrogen filling station. Hyperion plans to address the infrastructure problem first, building its own fueling stations in something akin to Tesla’s Supercharger network. Except Hyperion won’t need as many stations, because Hyperion says the XP-1 offers more than 1000 miles of range (1,635 Kilometers, at a mix of 55 percent city and 45 percent highway driving). Squeezing more range out of
48

batteries is an incremental process; to double the range of a fuel-cell car, you just use a bigger tank. That’s just one of the advantages that Kafantaris hopes will help convince the general public that hydrogen is the best battery out there. Representing a massive leap in personal transportation and sustainable hydrogen power, the XP-1 features a high-performance, zero-emissions hydrogen-electric powertrain combined with technology directly derived from some of the world’s leading aeronautical, engineering firms, and space agencies. When combined, these technologies allow the XP-1 to outperform modern sports cars while boasting unprecedented range, refuel time, endurance, and recyclability; especially when compared to today’s batteryelectric vehicles.
“Hydrogen gives you all the benefits of electric power with lower weight,” Kafantaris says. “You could race it, because hydrogen doesn’t care about heat. And you can make hydrogen from excess grid solar power. Creating hydrogen is greener than making batteries.” Hyperion quotes the XP-1’s curb weight at less than 2275 pounds, a number in line with the most feathery of internal-combustion sports cars. But what about safety? Kafantaris says that’s a solved problem. “You can throw our tanks off a building or shoot them with a high-powered rifle. They won’t rupture.” But they are expensive, using plenty of carbon fiber. Right now, with a car like the XP-1, that doesn’t matter. But if hydrogen is to become our default means of energy storage, the expense curve will need to follow that of EVs, and then some. There’s a plan for that. And maybe, we discern, for infrastructure beyond the gas-station refueling model. Like, what if you could plug in your hydrogen car and have it refill its own tank, cracking hydrogen off the molecule of your choice? Then you wouldn’t need refueling stations. All you’d need is a plug.

Speculation aside, the XP-1 is slated to go into production in 2022, with a limited run of 300 cars. It’ll have allwheel drive, with a three-speed transmission and ultracapacitors to buffer the output of the fuel cell. The body includes active aero elements that double as solar panels. The double-barrel exhaust stacks are functional—but all that comes out is deionized water vapor. It’s the kind of wild machine you’d expect from someone who used to be Innovation Group Manager at Mattel, in charge of dreaming up Hot Wheels cars—which was one of Kafantaris’s former roles. Founded in 2011 by an expert team of PhD’s, Hyperion is a technology company that consists of three divisions, Hyperion Energy, Hyperion Motors, and Hyperion Aerospace: all focused on hydrogen-based power and delivery. Based in Orange, California, Hyperion delivers cutting edge space technology, pioneered by NASA, to the world. From road vehicles to space travel, Hyperion seeks to completely revolutionize the transportation industry by offering convenient, highquality, low-cost hydrogen fuel to the world. “People just expect the future to be better,” Kafantaris says. “But it won’t be unless you do something about it now.”

If this is done on an island of lush greenery and crystalline blue waters, then all the better. This month, HOT Magazine has the pleasure of taking you to one of Thailand’s most fantastic sites: the paradisiac islands of Koh Phi Phi. As always though, we begin with some history. Legend has it, that this island may have derived its name from

Krabi, meaning “sword”. It is said that an antique sword was found and removed from the deep of its soil before the town came to be formally founded. The name itself does not have its origin in the Thai language, but in Malay: its original name was Pulau Api-Api, which translates to “The Fiery Isle”. This references the Pokok Api-Api, meaning “Fiery Tree” in English, due to the many grey mangrove trees that are found throughout the entire island. It has been deduced through the discovery of archaeological remnants, that
Koh Phi Phi was one of Thailand’s oldest communities and that it is so old in fact, that it is said to date back to times of prehistory, over twenty-two centuries ago. Today, we have just hints of what the Island’s ancestors left us with, for instance, the art of batik painting which is still today practiced by the locals. In addition, there is a large availability of Krabi handicrafts, such as the very rustic pineapple paper. the most visually stunning in Southeast Asia and are accessible via a mere forty-five-minute speedboat trip or a ninety-minute ferryboat ride from either Phuket or Krabi. This means that one can, in less than an hour, be in Thailand’s ultimate tropical getaway to indulge in all its classic white sandy beaches, incredible rock formations, and translucent turquoise waters. Koh Phi Phi possesses a great range of wildlife with all colours of the visual spectrum. In the water, there are varieties from the mighty lionfish to the fa-
mous clownfish, as well as moray eels and large majestic tortoises. On land, we find the iconic macaque, a cute friendly monkey found in many other parts of Thailand too. We find equally interesting reptiles of different species, from sea to land snakes and monitor lizards. Koh Phi Phi’s marine wildlife, along with its crystal clear waters, makes it a very popular site for scuba divers and snorkelers alike. The most popular beach for this purpose is Yao Beach. This stretch of sand is south of Ton Sai
and provides all of the visitors there some spectacular sights of fantastic coral reefs. Naturally, it is easy to deduce because of its unique natural beauty that Yao Beach receives the greatest quantity of visitors at once, thus if you prefer a quieter holiday spot, you can venture to somewhere like Hin Tao. Hin Tao is a much quieter beach that can solely be accessed by foot. The short journey on foot makes it a remarkable little adventure and once the beach has been reached, its splendour will not disappoint.

Phi Phi is actually a group of six islands. The two main islands are Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. The bigger and inhabited Phi Phi Don attracts the most visitors to stay in the beautiful shores while the smaller uninhabited Phi Phi Leh has stunning bays and beaches, including the world-famous Maya Bay. Currently closed to tourism to repair the ecosystem, it is where the movie “The Beach” starring 2016 Oscar winner Leonardo Dicaprio, was filmed. It was after the release of the movie that the islands came to have real notable worldwide prominence. All of Koh Phi Phi’s natural beauty is protected by national park status, which means that any infractions or damages to the environment, theft, or activity that compromises the environmental integrity of the island are severely punished by law as a serious crime. It is these strict laws however that have made Koh Phi Phi one of Thailand’s most popular destinations for scuba diving and snorkeling. One of the “musts” on Phi Phi Don is to check out the viewpoint. It is a ten to twenty-five-minute walk around 186m above sea level which takes you to a spot where one can enjoy the jaw-dropping view of the island in all its entirety. If this walk

For quieter moments you can visit the Tsunami Memorial Garden, a peaceful place for some meditation, and paying respect to all the victims of the tragedy. Ko Phi Phi is known to be heaven on earth. A place made to encounter peace of mind, and which will with its energy cleanse both body and soul. The island’s stunning looks, crystal clear water, and white sandy beaches make it one of the top ten places to visit in the South East Asia region and with international tourism on hold, it is the best time to visit, uncrowded, as it should be. Although many people visit just for the day, booking accommodations on the island for a several day stay is highly recommended!

Why Choose A Cat
62
HOT Magazine
Catamarans, also known as MultiHulls or Cats, can be powered by either sails or engines and are two hulls joined by a frame. Invented by South Pacific islanders, the twin-hull design was first observed in India in the late 17th century. Catamarans were more or less ignored in the West until 1877 when an American named Nathanael Herreshoff began developing and racing Catamarans. His designs were so much faster than traditional monohull designs that sailing authorities banned them from
competition for nearly a century. Today, Catamarans are a popular design for recreational and racing sailboats. They are also being used as efficient, low-wake ferries, such like the Pattaya/ Hua Hin Ferry. There are many reasons to choose a Catamaran over a monohull. The most apparent advantage is overall stability. Because of the Catamaran’s design, it does not heel underway and won’t roll while anchored, which adds to its comfort factor and all but eliminates sea-sickness.
HOT Magazine
63
There is no debate over the fact that Cats are faster than Monohulls under power or sail. This is due to several factors, the most important of which is the hull shape. Displacement hulls are the most common shapes for single hull craft. A displacement hull is supported on the water entirely by buoyancy effects. This creates a hydrodynamic drag barrier, which slows the craft. Catamaran hulls can be designed as planing or displacement hulls, but they are not slowed nearly as much by the drag barrier. Catamarans reduce drag by making use of a very thin and pointed hull design. They also have outstanding maneuverability. With an engine on each hull, a Catamaran can pivot around within a space equal to its length. Additionally, with its shallow draft, one can often reach places inaccessible to Monohulls and anchor closer to shore as well. Another HUGE plus is that Catamarans, for the most part, don’t sink because most are made from closed-cell foam, which floats no matter what. If you have an emergency at sea, the best policy is to stay with your Catamaran. If a Catamaran is damaged, or in very few extreme cases flips, the vessel will float indefinitely (right side up or not). The larger floating vessel will be easier to spot by any search and rescue crew.
64
HOT Magazine
Double the hulls mean double the engines. Most Cats have two engines, one in each hull. Ever have your engine break down on you when you most needed it? On a Catamaran, this would not be as catastrophic with a backup engine. The two engines also make for easy maneuvering – allowing one to pivot the Catamaran almost on its own axis in tight places. One of the most popular builders of Catamarans is Lagoon. Since 1984, Lagoon has built over 4,700 cruising Catamarans and is considered the world leader. Lagoon also offers the most extensive selection on the market, with 14 models ranging in size from 11 to 24 meters. The SEVENTY 8, is Lagoon’s newest flagship. The results are old-world hotel charm within a contemporary, dynamic setting – and memorable stay experiences enriched by genuinely warm, caring and attentive service. The new Dusit Thani Bangkok is slated to open as part of Dusit Central Park in 2023. More information can be found online at dusitcentralpark.com.
