Dear Reader, Welcome to issue 2 Volume 3 of HOT Magazine – Hua Hin, Bangkok. Once again Thailand made the top ten list for the best places on the planet to retire. After perusing this issue I think you’ll agree that Hua Hin is the best place within Thailand to do so. Our dear friend Lizzy celebrated her 2nd anniversary hosting Lizzy’s Multi Culti party and it was fittingly held at the Hua Hin Hilton Hotel, the location of the very first Multi Culti event. Read about and see who attended the sold out party on page 20. Speaking of parties, Vana Nava proved once again why it is the entertainment leader in Hua Hin when it hosted Thailand’s top rapper, Joey Boy “in the jungle”. Check out the fun on page 23. For you mariner’s, we take you to the 12th annual Phuket International Boat Show. With boats / Yachts ranging in price from under 2 million to 430 million baht there was something for almost everyone’s pocket book. Come aboard and cast away on page 26. No one doubts that tourism in Thailand has certainly had its challenges. At the 4th annual Thailand Tourism Forum held in Bangkok on January 26th, the Hospitality Industry’s elites shared their thoughts on where we are and their vision’s for where we’re headed, that’s on page 32. Speaking of tourism, we take you back to Hua Hin’s newest “must see” tourist destination, Vana Nava Water Jungle on page 38. Only open since December 1st, Vana Nava has seen huge crowds of fun seekers ever since. Finally, February 17th in American is “Random Acts of Kindness Day”. We at HOT Magazine would like to share a thought from Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th & current Dalai Lama; “When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace”. We hope you enjoy the read.

HUA HIN EXECUTIVE PROFILE What is your full name? And age? Harald Elisson 39 years What is your current Job Position? Managing Director of Black Mountain How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I have lived in Hua Hin since 2007 What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? Not much, I did not know it had perfect weather all year round. What do you like most about your profession? Golf is the best industry I know in which to work. The most important and satisfying aspect of being involved in a leading golf club is ensuring that everyone who comes to Black Mountain – members and visitors – have a truly memorable golf and leisure experience. Every day there are new challenges and details to address, so it is important to stay abreast of everything happening at the club and make decisions when they are needed. It is great to see the results of the decisions we make and witness the satisfaction and enjoyment of people who use our facilities. It is also very satisfying to have been able to help build a community at Black Mountain, one that many people utilize as their second home. Black Mountain is more than a golf club – it is a place where people live and participate in a wide range of activities (as well as golf) and have a sense of belonging. Seeing Black Mountain grow from nothing into such a diverse and popular community has been extremely satisfying. What do you like the least about your profession? There is nothing I don’t like. It is the most satisfying profession I know. I wouldn’t want to do anything else. What do you like most about Hua Hin? Hua Hin is Thailand’s most attractive and interesting travel destination. There is everything here that anyone would want: great weather, a wonderful environment, excellent beaches, a large choice of dining options, entertainment and history. Being the holiday destination of the Thai Royal Family for the past 90 years makes Hua Hin a very special place. I don’t know anywhere else in Thailand, or in Asia, that has what Hua Hin offers. It has retained its culture and character without becoming too commercialized. And of course it is going to get better and better in the future,

Harald Elisson

with new infrastructure, improved shopping facilities, a new international school at Black Mountain and much more. Hua Hin is not only growing, but it is doing so in a good way. The climate is unbeatable, great all year round. We have not lost a full day to rain at Black Mountain since the course opened in 2007. What is your favorite local restaurant? Why? Black Mountain’s clubhouse restaurant is one of the best in Hua Hin. There is also the Black Mountain Gourmet restaurant in Hua Hin itself, which offers a wonderful, fine dining experience, and a Prime Steak House – a restaurant with a great atmosphere, in an excellent location and serving great quality food at good prices.

What do you like to do in your free time? Why? Family, Golf, Travel What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin? Why? I would recommend they see and do everything the town and surrounding area offers. There is a real diversity of sporting, leisure and historic attractions as well as wonderful scenery. So I would say go and explore it all; get to know everything about Hua Hin, and tell your family and friends to come here. In the years I have been in the area I have noticed how Hua Hin has become everyone’s favorite destination and how people keep returning for golf, beaches, sightseeing and many other activities.

STONEFISH WINE DINNER at Anantara Hua Hin

T

he Anantara Hua Hin Resort Spa hosted another one of their highly anticipated wine dinners on the 28th January at Baan Thalia, Anantara Hua Hin’s beautiful and romantic Italian Restaurant. The evening was held to showcase Stonefish Wines from Australia. The evening’s special guest was Mr. Peter Papanikitas, managing Director of Estate Wine Company and bottler of Stonefish among many other brands. The Anantara’s Executive Chef Mr. Hans Peter Held put together a mouthwatering menu that was perfectly paired to compliment the Stonefish wines being served. The special night was well attended with guests and media from Hua Hin who joined together for live music, elegant atmosphere, superb Italian foods and of course the wonderful Australian Stone Fish wines. The menu included Avocado tartar with caramelized scallops, Italian seafood soup, Ravioli of braised lamb stew and duck breast on braised radicchio served with polenta cake. To finish the meal there was an amazing dessert called “Chocolate Lava cake” served with pistachio ice cream. The wines served to match each course were light and refreshing, in the form of Stonefish’s Sauvignon Blanc 2013, Merlot 2010, their Shiraz 2012 and Reserve Cabernet. The evening was topped with the aforementioned chocolate lava cake served with Stonefish’s Flying Finix 2006. Sauvignon 2010. S

aturday evening January 31st at the Hua Hin Hilton Hotel’s White Lotus Sky Bar, Siam Winery held a launch party for their latest import, Mionetto Prosecco Brut D.o.c..

MIONETTO, The Star at Sky Bar

The guests of honor included Mionetto’s international distributor Mr. Klaus-Jurgen Kurten, Export Director for Henkell & Co. Sektkellerei KG from Germany, and Mr. Daniel Schwalb, Commercial Director of Siam Winery. The Mionetto Prosecco Brut D.o.c has an intense fruity bouquet with a hint of golden apples. It is very dry, fresh, light in body and well-balanced. This wine is perfect alone as an aperitif or as a delightful complement to appetizers such as prosciutto or mild cheeses. Excellent as a base for Bellinis and other sparkling wine cocktails. Selected guests of the Hilton and Siam Winery were invited to the event and enjoyed an evening filled with endless glasses of Mionetto along with delicious canapés. About Prosecco: The Prosecco grape originated during Roman times and is one of the oldest grapes in Italian history. Its origin and name can be traced back to the town of Prosecco in Trieste. Prosecco grapes are transformed into sparkling wine using the Charmat method in which stainless steel tanks and yeast are utilized to produce a natural second fermentation. The process takes approximately 60 days depending on acidity, residual sugar and pressure. The Charmat method allows Prosecco to preserve its original flavors and perfumes longer. Prosecco is traditionally a dry wine with hints of apple and citrus. Prosecco received its first level of national recognition in 1969 when it was awarded a D.o.c, Denominazione di Origine Controllata. The D.o.c status protected a small area of production and ensured Prosecco a level of prestige in the Italian wine community. Prosecco’s popularity has increased rapidly over the last ten years, particularly in Europe and the United States.

L ET’S PARTY

Multi Culti 2nd Anniversary Held at Hilton Hua Hin Resort & Spa

A

s always on the 28th of each month, Hua Hin’s Khun Lizzy held another successful Multi Culti event, this time in Hilton Hotel’s beach lawn. But the January MCC was a bit more special because two years ago in Hilton Hua Hin Khun Lizzy held her first MCC event with the support of the Hilton Management, to celebrate this occasion on January 28th, 2015 she came back to where it all started. This very special evening was atmospheric with the dining and stage area set under beautifully lit Frangipani trees and as always the event was jam packed with food, dancing, laughing and even a VIP guest, the Ambassador of Indonesia. What might not be well known is why Lizzy started the MCC and most 20

importantly what she did before coming to Hua Hin. Lizzy counts herself as a citizen of Indonesia, Holland, Germany and of course Switzerland. A talented event organizer, singer and a professional heartfelt mingler she is well loved in Hua Hin by many. But most do not know that Lizzy was already doing good deeds in Switzerland well before moving to Thailand. She used to work in banking but she always saw herself as a social worker first, involved in many charities such as the social department of Zurich where she helped the poor and addicted. She also was active in her local Church and held many events, especially for children and the elderly. The reason she started Multi Cultural Society, also known as MCC, was to

meet new people and at the same time continue her good work through others enjoyment. She prides herself that people still continue to come to her MCC events and that there has always been at least one hundred people in attendance, even in Hua Hin’s low season. With Lizzy’s good hard working heart, no wonder MCC keeps rolling on being the success it has been for two years. The Hot Magazine Team would like to congratulate MCC and Khun Lizzy on your second Anniversary! For more information on Multi Culti events open to all nationalities please Email Khun Lizzy herself at: lizzy.huahin@mycity-thailand.com

PHUKET INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW 2015 Re-writes the record books

26

Feb Dec15 15--Mar Jan 15 15 ,, 2015 2015

The

12th Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) presented by Thailand Elite once again took place at the Royal Phuket Marina. Running January 8th thru the 11th, the annual event held during Phuket’s peak season attracted thousands daily to view the beautiful yachts on display as well as luxury cars and varied luxury items. The strong turnout was not just from Thailand, large contingents from Singapore, Hong Kong, China and Russia also came to view and buy. With over 6 Billion Baht of product on display, this year’s boat show proved one of the largest in its history. From the smallest boat on display, at less than 20 feet and priced under 2,000,000 Baht, the boats grew in size and price with seventeen over 20 metres in length including large motor yachts from Sunseeker, Princess, Monte Carlo and Sanlorenzo. The largest boat on display this year was a Custom Line NEXT 112 Super Yacht valued at approximately 430,000,000 Baht which was part of a four boat display by Lee Marine. Two iconic British yacht brands, Sunseeker and Princess Yachts were shown in large numbers this year. Sunseeker, popularly known for being James Bond’s yacht of choice, had four large powerboats on display including the stunning Predator 92, while Princess Yachts exhibited four boats in the water as well as brokerage and charter offerings through local dealer Boat Lagoon Yachting. According to The Wealth Report 2014, the number of ultra-high net worth individuals in Thailand grew by 147 percent between 2003 and 2013, and is expected to grow another 52 percent by 2023, offering a promising outlook for the country’s yacht market. On the back of this, Gulf Craft – one of the world’s leading superyacht-building shipyards – is launching their Oryx 42 into Thailand and their Gulf Craft Majesty 48 into Asia at the Phuket International Boat Show. “PIMEX is one of Asia’s premier boat shows, both in terms of how well it is produced and how well it succeeds in attracting top calibre attendees,” said Mr. Erwin Bamps, CEO of Gulf Craft. “For Gulf Craft, our participation in the event is pivotal to bringing our lineup of luxury vessels to the forefront of Thailand’s increasingly affluent boating community, and to being an active participant in Asia’s thriving maritime industry.” Elsewhere in the marina were boats from Cranchi, Majesty, Gulf Craft, Azimut, Bavaria, Moody and Wider Yachts Asia. Derani Yachts were displaying several boats, the largest being a San Lorenzo 72, while Simpson Marine had a large display with six boats

including a selection from the Monte Carlo shipyard, a brand which they launched into Asia with much success at the Phuket International Boat Show last year. Ideally suited to cruising the Andaman region, multihulls are growing in popularity and was reflected with an increase in the number of multihulls on display this year. Multihull Solutions are showcasing popular designs from Fountaine Pajot and Privilege while the Northrop & Johnson’s display included the new Thai-built solar power-assisted luxury catamaran Heliotrope 65.

Onshore, the exhibitor line-up mirrored that of the in-water display both in terms of size and quality, and also in variety. Luxury auto brands Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Aston Martin, BMW and Mini all debuted this year and were joined by a collection of luxury real estate, marine and lifestyle products and services. Other business that have chosen to showcase at PIMEX for the first time, and to launch their products into Thailand’s luxury marketplace include

Quadski – high speed amphibious vehicles that operate on land and water – Markagain – a platform from Italy for the management and resale of pre-owned luxury assets such as yachts, luxury cars, real estate and more – and Archi Studio – specialists in architectural design and building materials using advanced technology. “We’re very happy with the turnout, and with over 5,000 independently verified visitors this year it is one of the busiest Show’s to date. Our focus is

on attracting quality visitors, the type with an interest in the offerings at the Show and those who have purchasing power,” said Mr. Andy Dowden, Phuket International Boat Show Director. “Having talked to many people at the Show, the feedback from exhibitors and the interest from serious buyers has been very encouraging. We expect there to be a lot of business done after the Show as a result of leads made at the Show.

THAILAND TOURISM FORUM 2015

In

the first half of 2014, turmoil threw Thailand’s tourism industry a curve ball. A game-changing new paradigm that started last May led to a series of remarkable transformations which rapidly took the hospitality sector into unknown territory. On Monday January 26th at the Inter Continental Hotel Grand Ballroom in Bangkok, the fourth annual Thailand Tourism Forum took place with a record turnout of over 500 industry insiders all of whom came to gleam insights from industry leaders on Thailand’s tourism sector and on where it is headed. First to be heard was Suchad

32

Feb 15 - Mar 15 , 2015

Chiaranussati, Founder and Chairman of SC Capital Partners. SCCP is an institutional real estate private equity investment firm with offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Tokyo, Shangai and Viet Nam. A few of their Thailand investments include the Millennium Residence in Bangkok, Phuket Square and the Laguna Resort in Phuket. Suchad spoke of Thailand’s strengths and his company’s long term approach to investing. Next up was Thailand’s Hotel Leaders’ Summit which included Clarence Tan, COO of Asia Australia Intercontinental Hotels Group, Dillip Rajakarier, CEO of Minor Hotel Group, Peter Henley,

President and CEO of ONYX Hospitality Group and Markland Blaiklock, Chief Operating Officer of Centara Hotels and Resorts. The question was asked if tourism in Thailand is broken. None of the panel agreed that it was, but they did conclude that the “shine” is off and that improvements had to be made. The improvements offered included political stability, the stopping of tourist scams and the engagement in environmental clean-ups and protection. Another one of the questions posed was: “What are the biggest challenges/threats?” Discussed answers included political uncertainty, travel bans/warnings, increasing crime and alternative destinations such as Myanmar. The positive news for the industry was welcomed as STR’s Area Director for Asia Pacific Jesper Palmqvist revealed the staggering decline for most of 2014 with year-over-year (YoY) occupancy falling by -11.3%, mostly driven by Bangkok, which saw a decline YoY of -16.2%. This is against a backdrop of almost half the year at -20% and worst months where it was over 30% down.

However, recovery started to emerge in late Q3; and in Q4 numbers really turned around for Bangkok. After the dismal start to the year, RevPAR (Revenue Per Available Room) increased by +2.5% YoY in the last quarter. Occupancy in December for Bangkok was one of the highest ever recorded by STR Global since 2000 and when comparing quarters, Q4 2014 showed the best occupancy Bangkok has seen since 2006. Moreover, RevPAR was the second

best Q4 for the last decade suggesting that six to nine months is the new recovery time norm for Bangkok. Delegates also heard the story of Thailand’s key resort markets, where Phuket occupancy fell by -5.7% YoY and Koh Samui decreased by -1.6%. It was positive news for Chiang Mai where occupancy decreased -4.2%, but RevPAR growth was positive, driven by upward ADR (Average Daily Rate) movement. Hua Hin was also able to hold rates up

well, but Pattaya suffered more due to a -10% decline in YoY occupancy . Subsequent sessions featured industry heavyweight speakers from many top companies including Horwath HTL, Jones Lang LaSalle, QUO Global, Baker & McKenzie and Kingdom Property. This annual event is organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand and Bill Barnett, Managing Director of leading hospitality consultancy C9 Hotelworks. Feb 15 - Mar 15 , 2015

Café Crepes

The

owner’s of the fine restaurants La Grappa and Le Bistro have another restaurant called Café Crepes just adjacent to Le Bistro. Cafe Crepes is a much more relaxed place to eat compared to its fine dining sister’s le Bistro and La Grappa, but with the same impeccable standards as the other two restaurants. The interior of Café Crepes is casual in bright colors with a mix of modern furniture. The concept is to serve “Galettes” & Crepes. Galettes are a well-known French delicacy basically meaning buckwheat pancakes served with savory fillings. Crepes are pancakes made with wheat flour often smaller than Galettes and mostly served with a sweet

filling. The Café is run by restaurant manager Sandra Duboueix. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and judging from the group that was there on food review day it’s also popular as a good place to come for a snack and a coffee. Although I had eaten at the Café before I was looking forward to seeing what Sandra would recommend for us. We tried three savory Galettes in the form of The Galette Complete, Galette Mediterraneenne and the Galette Chevre. The Galette Complete is a throwback of a meal I ate many times as a student in France. A pancake filled with ham, cheese and egg. The egg sits on top of the dish and to enjoy this crepe properly you break the yolk to get the right

constancy of egg yolk, ham and cheese in every bite. I loved this as a student and I still love this Galette. The next was my colleague’s favorite the Galette Mediterraneenne filled with Ratatouille, Ricotta and basil. This is a fresh and light Crepe for those that like to eat their veggies but still want some lux with the Ricotta cheese. The last Savory Crepe was Galette Chevre served with a topping of goat cheese (Yum!), walnut, egg and honey. This one was a surprising pancake, in the first bite I tasted both savory and sweet due to the honey, and didn’t really know what make of it but after the initial surprise I really liked this dish. Many clients order a salad on the side but these portions are huge so be warned don’t do what I did and eat

almost five Crepes/Galettes. We were initially going to eat one sweet crepe to share but after the first dessert Crepe a request was made if we could have another one in a different flavor. Just because we had to do it! The first one was the Crepe Chocolat covered in chocolat sauce and almond flakes which we devoured together with whipped cream. The second Crepe, or should I say the unplanned Crepe, was the Crepe Normandy. This is an unbelievable Crepe with confit apples inside, salted butter caramel sauce and whipped cream. This last crepe should on no accord be shared, too yummy and can be eaten as a snack, dessert or a pick me up on a blue day.

HOT SCORE I personally love the owners of Le Grappa, Le Bistro and Café Crepes. I like that they keep challenging themselves to be on top of what the Hua Hin crowd wants and then deliver it with class and taste! They have managed to do this yet again with Café Crepes, but this time in a more affordable yet still quality way. As for the Crepes my favorites were the Galette Complete-Ham, Cheese and Egg, Galette Chevre-The Goat Cheese surprise and of course the Crepe Normandy covered in Caramel Sauce! I loved all of them but these 3 stood out for me and I will be back very soon for a caramel covered Crepe with an extra order of whipped cream! I would like to add

that the prices at Café Crepe are very reasonable. A savory Galette is less than 200 thb, a sweet Crepe goes around a 100. Their breakfasts start at 100 thb. This is a great Café to come by for a meal on the go and there is indoor and outdoor seating where you can enjoy your French pancakes in any way you like it. Plus they make a good coffee too! Restfully Yours

est Detail Hotel Hua Hin is one of those hotels many local Expats in Hua Hin are not familiar with for some reason, but the hotel is very popular with foreign guests and Bangkokians. The hotel is located on Soi 19 very close to 19 Rai and is one of those undiscovered gems everyone should check out. The hotel is very chic with an eclectic décor. I recently snapped a photo of Rest Detail’s pool restaurant overlooking the pool and the sea and placed it on my personal Facebook page only to receive tons of comments such as: “Beautiful! Where is it?” I told you, this place is very nice.

The Hotel has a spa called Restfully Yours which goes in very much the same

46

theme as the hotel with a décor that harps back to those old colonial Hua Hin white wooden houses with nice splashes of color to make it a “modern meets colonial” style. I have visited this Spa before and it has been one of my top choices in this area for a long time, for their ingenuity in Spa treatments but also on their top-notch Spa service. The Spa itself is located adjacent to the lobby with all the mod cons you would expect from a chic Spa. The treatments start with refreshments and a consultation for your needs. The treatment chosen for me at this point is the Rest Detail Signature treatment called Healing of the Ocean (90 minutes). I was secretly pleased as I had heard of this treatment but had actually never

encountered the chance to try it myself. The description of the treatment is a “body customized massage using selfheating Lava Shells to unlock the knots in your muscle groups”. I was looking forward to this as I have never done a treatment using sea shells. Before the treatment you check into your own private treatment en-suite, with a to-die-for shower room with enough warm water to freshen you up before the treatment. I will never quite like my own pathetic water heater or water pressure after this. The extra touches are their own in-house products available for use before the treatment such as shower gels, shampoos and the like. Also it’s all marble white with fluffy towels, making it even more luxurious.

Although the procedure is different from others I have seen, you may be slightly familiar with some parts of the treatment as it resembles a hot stone massage, but in Rest Detail they use Lava Shells to do the same trick. The Shells are (for those not familiar with Lava Shells) the size of a palm and I don’t think they are found on the shores of Hua Hin. These are warmed and applied to the body with an oil of your choosing. The treatment has many benefits such as decreasing muscle tension and providing a general feeling of relaxation. The treatment is a complete bliss, for 90 minutes your entire body is gently massaged with the shells and the therapist’s hands. The shells are

smooth on the skin, even more so than the hot stones I have tried. Due to the heat that they contain, the muscles are gently nudged into relaxing and unknotting. With this kind of treatment it was clear that after 30 minutes or so I was in deep sleep and might have snored as usual. The treatment ending is something I cannot remember much, except for being told not to wash off the oil immediately, as it is beneficial for the skin. I left looking like a fully basted steak but feeling very sleepy, relaxed and pampered. HOT SCORE I have to start by saying that this is one of the few amazing relatively undiscovered Boutique hotels in Hua

Hin. I highly recommend a visit if not for anything else but to have a coffee and to take in the Ocean and the very cool design and décor. As for the Spa, the treatment I tried is a rare indulgence for those who like to experiment new things and be exposed to the quality of service and the understated luxury that follows it through. Check out Rest Detail Hotel Hua Hin and Restfully Yours and make sure you bring your camera for the ambiance pictures, you will not regret it! town ready for a week packed with great golf and even better company. “We are delighted to be teaming up with Golfasian for the Amari Hua Hin Amateur Golf Week. Hua Hin has been voted by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) as the number one golf destination in Asia and Australia in 2014. L ET’S GO Nan Province There are so many reasons why I love living in Hua Hin. As a foreigner it has all the conveniences I am used to and desire as well as a laid back, resort beach lifestyle. Occasionally though I long for the more rustic and traditional side of Thailand, the side of Thailand that isn’t dominated by tourism and amenities. If you feel the same then take a trip to Thailand’s Nan Province. Nan is both a quiet town and a tranquil province in Northern Thailand, approximately 670 kilometers from Bangkok and covers an area of 11,474 square kilometers. Nan features six national parks, including the stunning Doi Phukha National Park, which contains mountains nearly 2,000 m high. The rich natural beauty of Nan makes it an ideal destination for trekking as the remote province sees far fewer visitors than neighboring Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai.

The provincial capital of Nan, seldom visited by Westerners, has a relaxed charm, an interesting history, some impressive temples, and a good museum. There are also a number of quality restaurants and bars along the town’s riverfront to plan your adventures into the countryside or relax after a day of sightseeing. The largest city in Nan Province is Nan City which is located in Nan’s biggest river valley. Nan City is still quite small and can be driven across in about twenty minutes. About 100 kilometres to the north is Pua, Nan’s second largest city. Pua is really just a small town but is a good spot to base yourself when checking out the nearby Doi Phuka National Park or Silaphet Waterfall. Other towns in Nan Province are Wiang Sa, about 50 kilometres south of Nan City, Mae Charim, 100 kilometres east of Nan City, and Ban Luang, which is about 100 kilometres west.

The Nan National Museum is housed in the 1903 vintage palace of Nan’s last two feudal lords, this museum first opened its doors in 1973. In terms of collection and content, it’s one of the country’s better provincial museums, and has English labels for most items. The ground floor has ethnological exhibits covering the various ethnic groups found in the province. Among the items on display are silverwork, textiles, folk utensils and tribal costumes. On the 2nd floor are exhibits on Nan history, archaeology, local architecture, royal regalia, weapons, ceramics and religious art. Of the latter, the museum’s collection of Buddha images includes some rare Lanna styles as well as the floppy-eared local styles. Also on display on the 2nd floor is a rare ‘black’ elephant tusk said to have been presented to a Nan lord over 300 years ago by the Khün ruler of Chiang Tung (Kyaingtong).

Nan’s most famous Buddhist temple, Wat Phumin is celebrated for its exquisite murals that were executed during the late 19th century by a Thai Lü artist named Thit Buaphan. The exterior of the temple takes the form of a cruciform bòht (chapel) that was constructed in 1596 and restored during the reign of Chao Anantavorapitthidet (1867–74). The ornate altar in the centre of the bòht has four sides, with four Sukhothai-style sitting Buddhas facing in each direction. Wat Phra That Chang Kham is the second-most important temple in the city after Wat Phra That Chae Haeng. The founding date is unknown, but the main wí·hăhn (sanctuary), reconstructed in 1458, has a huge seated Buddha image and faint murals that have been partially recovered. The chedi behind the wí·hăhn is thought to date to around the same time as the temple was founded, and features elephant supports similar to those seen in Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai. Next to the chedi is a small, undistinguished bòht from the same era. Wat Chang Kham’s current abbot tells an interesting story involving the bòht and a Buddha image that was once kept inside. According to the abbot, in 1955 art historian AB Griswold offered to purchase the 145cm-tall Buddha inside the small bòht . The image appeared to be a crude Sukhothai-style walking Buddha molded of plaster. After agreeing to pay the abbot 25,000 thb for the image, Griswold began removing the image – but as he did it fell and the plaster around the statue broke away to reveal an original Sukhothai Buddha of pure gold underneath. Needless to say, the abbot made Griswold give it back, much to the latter’s chagrin. Did Griswold suspect what lay beneath the plaster? The abbot refuses to say. The image is now kept behind a glass partition in the hŏr đrai (Tripitaka library) adjacent to the wí·hăhn, the former the largest of its type in Thailand. Nan Province is mostly mountainous, with many river valleys cutting their way through the peaks. The highest, most

rugged mountains can be found on the Laos border. Apart from the rivers, there are many waterfalls to see and there are even some whitewater rapids you can raft or kayak down. Large portions of this province have been turned into national parks, which all have unique sights and activities. The two main rivers in this province are the Nan River and the Wa River. Doi Phuka National Park is located a couple of hours drive east of Pua on the road to Bo Kluea. The main activities in the park are trekking and camping. There are several lookouts inside the area and anyone with a car or motorbike can easily get to these spots for some fantastic views. Another main attraction which draws a lot of Thai tourists is the flowering of the Chom Poo Doi Phuka flower which blooms in December to early January. This flower is found only in Nan Province. Silaphet Waterfall is found close to Pua and anyone driving to Pua from Nan City will spot the signs pointing towards it quite easily. One can only access the waterfall in the cold and hot seasons as the path is flooded in the rainy season. The path to the waterfall is a few kilometres long. At the base of the path there are some riverside restaurants which serve some good local cuisine. Mae Charim National Park is found 250 kilometres east of Nan, about 100 kilometres from the Laos border. The main activity of this park is whitewater rafting. The Wa River runs through the park and several tour agencies in the area run rafting trips to and from the park. During the rainy season the water is high and muddy. The water level drops during the cold and hot seasons which make up the peak times for rafting in this area. Mae Charim National Park also has camping facilities and restaurants which are open during peak seasons. If you’re feeling truly adventurous then rent a tent and spend the night at Doi Wow. The night sky is illuminated by thousands of stars providing a very romantic atmosphere and when you wake up you are in the midst of many beautiful flowers.

Feb 15 - Mar 15 , 2015

The route up to Doi Wow is around 1,674 meters and you will pass an evergreen forest where you can really absorb nature. In the evening before sunset, three mountain peaks will appear with different shapes, Doi Chang, Doi Wua and Doi Paaji. Nan Province has three seasons: the hot season, the rainy season and the cold season. The hot season lasts from about March until May and is characterised by sweltering temperatures, dry weather and high humidity. The rainy season lasts from June until October and is similar to the hot season except that it rains a lot. The rain does give everything a chance to cool off though so it is definitely a welcome change. After the rainy season, temperatures start dropping in the cold season, which lasts from November until February. Temperatures in the cold season drop down low at night. If you’re camping then you’ll need to bring warm clothing, and if you’re staying in a hotel or guesthouse then don’t bother getting an air-conditioned room, you won’t need it. There is no rain in the cold season so this is by far the best time to visit. To see the best scenery it’s best to visit in November or December. Everything is still lush and green after the rainy season and the weather is cool enough so you won’t break a sweat. The popular food here is Khao lam (glutinous rice roasted in bamboo joints) which is called Khao lam Jang locally. They use 70-90 centimeters of bamboo sticks and burn them. After burning, they peel the bamboo off and eat the rice inside. There are many kinds of sticky rice inside such as sticky white rice and sticky black rice. Visitors can find Khao lam at the roadside all along Amphur Taa Wang Paa. A hidden gem of a province, Nan was once an independent kingdom and is now a refuge for travelers who wish to explore the natural beauty of northern Thailand and its rich cultural heritage in peace and tranquility.

Bangkok’s Flower Market

64

Feb 15 - Mar 15 , 2015

C

olorful flowers brighten up the greys around every corner in Bangkok, but it’s not just because they look nice. Flowers play a pivotal role in the ancient Thai tradition of making offerings to spirits and sacred statues. Bangkok’s biggest flower market, Pak Khlong Talaad, is at the center of this tradition, and it’s a fun place to soak up the colors and aromas. Bangkok Flower Market is the biggest wholesale and retail fresh flower market in Bangkok. The market has all kinds of popular flowers and flora-related items, including roses, forget me not’s, orchids, lilies and more. Most of the flowers are sold in packs of 50 or 100 each, and prices are amazingly cheap. Some flower vendors specialize in classic bundles of roses and other bouquets in every possible color. Most vendors are wholesalers, so it’s possible to pick up two dozen gorgeous, freshly picked red roses for just 80 baht. While most of the flowers at Pak Khlong Talaad are grown in the provinces nearest Bangkok, especially Nakhon Pathom, rarer varieties like tulips are shipped from as far afield as the northern mountains of Chiang Rai, and you can even bargain for an aweinspiring array of freshly cut orchids that will cost something like 1/50 of what they would in Europe or the United States. Part of the Old City, Bangkok Flower market is located on Chak Phet Road near Saphan Phut or the Memorial Bridge. Shops and vendors are housed inside two to three-storey shop-houses on both sides of the main road. The market lies just south of Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) and has access to a river pier, so it makes for a great one-day trip when combined with other historical attractions in the Old City. Open 24 hours, Pak Klong Talad is most lively after midnight. If you want to see the market in full action though the best time to go is pre-dawn or at 3:00-4:00. This is when the roadside transforms into a kaleidoscope of bright, blooming colors, as vendors receive floral goods from each flowergrowing area in the country. Wholesalers bring in truckloads of freshly cut flowers, while traders and retailers come to buy their stock in bulk. It can be quite a chaotic scene, and vendors may be less patient when Feb 15 - Mar 15 , 2015

dealing with visitors. If you go during this period, it’s best to just observe and absorb the surrounding atmosphere. The market has a long history. During the reign of Rama I (1782–1809), a floating market took place on the site of the modern Pak Khlong Talad; by the reign of Rama V (1868–1910), it had changed to a fish market. The fish market was eventually converted to today’s produce market, which has existed for over 60 years. The market’s focus has shifted from produce to flowers as the Talat Thai market on the outskirts of Bangkok has become a more attractive site for produce wholesaling. The market accommodates both consumers and wholesalers and has a wide variety of customers. Many local florists visit the market in the early morning hours to stock their shops for the coming day. Though the market is documented in guidebooks, it receives few foreign tourists.

angkok is filled with vastly different but interesting locations. Khao San Road, long a haven for backpackers has now become a colorful and vibrant part of Bangkok where Thai’s and tourists gather at some of the best bars in town. Thong Lor has recently become the hot spot in town known for its excellent choice of upmarket and fashionable restaurants, along with plenty of trendy spots to drink the night away. As a large percentage of the Japanese expat population lives here, there are plenty of excellent izakaya, ramen, and sushi joints, and even a restaurant and shop village known as Nihonmura (Japantown). Another great Bangkok area is Wireless Road, located in the heart of Bangkok’s shopping and embassy district. I recently had the pleasure of staying at the newly opened Hotel Indigo, a great 5 star hotel on Wireless Road. I thoroughly enjoyed not only my stay but also exploring the neighborhood. Wireless Road is cosmopolitan but yet also very local. Here you’ll find luxurious shopping malls located right next to unique local markets and international restaurants found right next to the most local street food stalls. You are just as likely to find a chef who’s trained at el Bulli as you are a chef who learned everything about food from their mum. Hotel Indigo is a boutique hotel brand that is part of the InterContinental Hotel Group. It is known as the industry’s first branded boutique hotel, artfully combining the conveniences and consistencies of a branded hotel with the design cache and service personality of a boutique hotel, so boutique that each hotel has its own unique architecture. There are 60 Hotel Indigo’s spread throughout the world but Bangkok’s Hotel Indigo on Wireless Road is the very first in South East Asia. Each Hotel Indigo property is designed around the local culture, character and geography of the surrounding area. In fact, every member of the staff at Hotel Indigo has been trained to be a “neighborhood specialist” who can be drawn upon to provide information on where to go for the best types of everything. If you’re in the mood for a particular type of food, they can tell you where to find it, whether you are wanting it in a fancy restaurant or from one of the local street-side food carts. If you don’t feel like leaving the hotel you can discover a refreshingly different yet remarkably local dining and drinking experience at the hotel’s distinctive Feb 15 - Mar 15 , 2015

The park is a lush and tropical retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city, and is dotted with gazebos and boat houses built in traditional Thai wooden style. Hotel Indigo is located next to All Season’s place and just a couple of minutes’ walk to the BTS Ploenchit station. It is also close to the new Central Embassy shopping mall where their motto is “Redefining the new luxury

With their modern and vibrant guest rooms featuring locally-inspired artwork, plush bedding, hardwood floors, spainspired bathrooms, complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the hotel and their Fitness Centre and open-air, infinity-edge pool, Hotel Indigo is a perfect home away from home.

hen your Billionaire friend is out of town, there is always Bangkok’s Embassy Diplomat screens. Billed as the most expensive cinema in the world, it was designed by the European design firm the Rockwell Group. At a cost of THB 120 million, the five screens were built to create a high-end homey feel to your cinema-going experience, with small, intimate screening rooms featuring cocooned seating, blankets and pillows as well as a butler-service call button. As you’d expect from a cinema with just five screens and 203 seats, the foyer is quiet, giving staff the time to attend to your every whim. On arrival, you are escorted into the lounge, where small sofa-lined cubbyholes with plenty of cushions provide the first feel that you’re in a very magnificent home, rather than a cinema. The ticket price (around THB 1,000) includes your choice of welcome snacks, which are eaten in the lounge before the movie starts, so it’s worth arriving at least 30 minutes early to the film. Your options include a choice of savory dishes from Dean & Deluca, a selection of desserts from The Oriental Shop or a Heineken beer and some popcorn. The five screening rooms boast the latest Real DXL technology, promising

72

sharp viewing and high quality audio. The cinema’s big comfortable adjustable reclining sofas are quite similar to those first class chairs used in leading airlines as they recline just like a bed with duvet and pillows. The chairs come equipped with an adjustable light, a call button for butler service, a bag hanger and USB ports that let you put your electronic devices on charge while you enjoy the movie. On top of that, you can enjoy unlimited drinks from your own fridge, well-stocked with soft drinks and Heineken. Screen 1 is the most extravagant of the screening rooms with its own wine cellar and in addition to the First Class Cocoon seating you can also opt for 3 person sofa’s or two person day bed’s, couches and loft beds. While the cinema does have the latest technology, its intended appeal is the comfort. You can make yourself entirely at home while still enjoying the full cinema-going experience that’s lacking in your condo’s screening room. Embassy Diplomat Screens is located on the sixth floor of the Central Embassy Shopping Mall on Ploenchit Road near the BTS Ploenchit Station. www.embassycineplex.com
