Thailand Soars In Readers Poll Formula E’s RecordBreaking Audience Let’s Stay, Royal Orchid Sheraton Bangkok Thailand Yacht Charters

EDITOR’S

NOTE

T

hailand has been a popular tourist destination for decades, thanks to its white-sand beaches, delicious cuisine and hot weather. Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, frequently holds the top spot as the world’s most visited city. It attracts around 22 million visitors each year. The 1,430 islands of Thailand draw in hundreds of thousands of visitors yearly, some of the islands are heralded as being some of the best in the world.

The Formula E championship is currently contested by eleven teams with two drivers each. The sport features electric-powered race cars similar in style to the hybriddrive cars of Formula One, with racing generally taking place on temporary city-centre street circuits, 1.9 to 3.4 km (1.2 to 2.1 mi) long. Reach into your glove box and pull out your racing gloves, then turn to page 64 to read why this might be your next sport to follow.

This was once again reaffirmed with the recently released Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2022, in which Thailand ranked high in most award categories.

One of the unexpected surprises from Covid was the massive increase in yachting interest, with a record number of yachts and superyachts purchased, and by the highest number of first- time yacht buyers. Simpson Marine, Southeast Asia’s largest yacht services company, sold 135 new and pre-owned yachts in 2021, a 20 percent increase on 2020, the previous best year for the company.

The Kingdom was ranked the 3rd best country and Bangkok was voted the 4th Best City in the World, while many Thai islands, hotels, and resorts also placed highly on other ‘best of’ lists. With its 3rd place spot among the 48 ‘Top Countries in the World’, Thailand was only one of two Southeast Asian countries to make the top 10. Pack up your suitcase and turn to page 46 to see where your next holiday in the Land of Smiles should be. Formula E is gearing up for its 9th season, starting in Mexico City on January 14th, with first time cities Cape Town, South Africa, Hyderabad, India, and São Paulo, Brazil joining the racing schedule. This after setting record breaking global TV audiences for two consecutive seasons. What is Formula E? It is a single-seat motorsport championship for electric cars. The series was conceived in 2011 in Paris by FIA president Jean Todt and Spanish businessman Alejandro Agag, who presently serves as the chairman of Formula E Holdings. The inaugural championship race was held in Beijing in September 2014.

The recently held Monaco yacht show saw two large yachts on display, the 62-meter Rio from Italian shipbuilder CRN and Tankoa Yachts’ 50-meter Kinda, both belonging to first-time yacht buyers. A rising trend that built significantly during the pandemic, when a substantial number of new buyers opted to go big rather than work their way up from a smaller yacht. This same yachting interest is also being seen in yacht charters. People see the benefit of creating their own bespoke holiday with just family, friends & crew on board. Put on your boat shoes and turn to page 72 to see which charter yacht based in Thailand you should consider for your next holiday. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue. We hope you enjoy the read.

A Conversation With Monicah W Breschini, Mrs. National World 2022

6

HOT Magazine

Monicah, you are from Kenya, how long did you live there and what was it like growing up? Yes, I am from Kenya. I was born and raised in Kenya and moved in 2016. It’s the land of breathtaking landscapes, interesting cultures, beautiful national parks, and wildlife reserves. Growing up in Kenya was wonderful. I have four sisters, and even though we didn’t have much, we had each other. Family in Kenya doesn’t just mean nuclear family, it means extended family including uncles, aunties, and grandparents who are all involved in every holiday. We would all go to visit my grandparents in the countryside, which meant fun and playing with all our many cousins. I grew up in Eldoret, a city north of Nairobi, which is known as the city of champions, because all the greatest athletes come from Eldoret. I can still smell the fragrant street foods. I miss the bustling energy in the streets of Kenya.

Can you tell us a happy childhood memory? I have plenty of good memories, but my favorite is when I would go on adventures with my many friends. I was such a tomboy, and all my friends were boys. We would walk for hours in the bush picking wild fruit, hunting birds, and swimming in natural streams. Our feet were always covered in red soil because we would walk for miles. We would laugh and play silly games without a care in the world; the world could have been on fire, but we didn’t care. Our main goal was to get back home before sundown or else we would all get into trouble. Sometimes we did get into trouble, but it would just mean that we had such a fun day, we just lost track of time.

You currently live in Hua Hin, Thailand. How long have you lived in Thailand and what made you decide to relocate? I have lived in Thailand for five years with my daughter and my husband. My husband was working in Sri Lanka so we would travel back and forth from Kenya to Sri Lanka. We were looking for a base. He brought us to Thailand because he loved it so much! We didn’t know where to go with our child since Bangkok can be a little noisy and hectic, so we decided to visit some of his friends in Hua Hin, a place my husband started to visit for work in the 1980’s.

That’s when we realized we had found our forever home. We decided to build our dream pool villa home and found a great school for our daughter. Five years later, she can read, write, and speak fluent Thai. We simply love Thailand! What do you like about Hua Hin? I love Hua Hin because it is such a diverse, multi-cultural little city. I have met some really incredible people who come from all over the world. The community is so connected in that everybody knows everybody. I am so glad we chose to live here.

What are some of your favorite activities? I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling and exploring this beautiful country, and hanging out with my many friends. I also love doing Muay Thai, fitness, and the occasional running because I know that it’s important for my mental health. At the 2022 Mrs. National Universe Competition, you were awarded first runner up, winning the Title Mrs. National World. What role do you think you can play in empowering women? It’s been almost two months since the Mrs. National Universe 2022 competition. My goal to join the competition was to mentor and be a role model to my daughter. I wanted to show her that with hard work, patience, and determination, one can achieve anything; the sky is the limit! When I won the title Mrs. National World, I didn’t realize how many girls and women I had inspired, receiving messages from strangers around the world, asking me how they could achieve such a goal, how they could start their modeling careers, or simply seeking my advice. It’s amazing! I believe my role is to support all women, whether or not they are in crisis, by donating or joining organizations, which aim to protect and serve women. In your opinion, what are the benefits of having empowered women in the organization? It is vital to have empowered women in the organization, because they help redefine gender roles, which in turn motivates other women to achieve their goals and equip them with the tools to have power and control over their own lives. It is really important!

Continuing its legendary modern-Thai gastronomy, Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin remains consistent in composing unique and inspiring dishes created by award-winning Michelin-star chef Henrik Yde-Andersen and senior head chef Chayawee Suthcharitchan.

fritter, is the house favourite. The tenth serving presents the refreshing ‘spicy Hokkaido scallop salad with pomelo’ with bursting flavours.

The secret to the ‘Winter Journey’ is designed to reflect Chef Henrik’s gastronomic travels as he reminisces about his adventures from Thailand to Japan and Europe. Portraying the ‘winter season’, Chef Henrik and Chef Chayawee join forces to develop menus using the finest winter-time ingredients in each dish.

The 13th serving is a reinvented dish that surprises guests with that wow factor: the ‘green curry snow fish cake’, a popular national dish of ‘green curry’ cooked with silky snow fish, made in the form of a cake with green curry lava inside. The 14th serving makes its way into a main course, with ‘duck confit Pad Krapow with peas and quail egg’, presenting the traditional French duck leg confit served with homemade chilli and basil sauce; peas; and quail egg on the side. This dish is also served with aromatic jasmine rice from Surin province.

The ‘Winter Journey’ menu embraces 16 invigorating servings, that begin with Kiin Kiin’s famous eight ‘snack and street food’ canapés to delight guests upon arrival at the lounge. The journey continues with the ninth serving at the dining table with the signature ‘Tom Yum Kung’ with fun crafted DIY instant tofu noodles made using a syringe. The ‘Tom Yum prawn’ with four homemade prawn condiments, including a prawn cracker, prawn toast, crispy prawn cake and lobster bisque

Leading into the 11th serving, there is the ‘king fish flan in miso’, which features the smooth texture of a smoked king fish with a touch of Japanese miso. The 12th serving portrays an exciting ‘Dino fish with carrot and tamarind’, introducing seabass with a crispy texture, similar to the dinosaur spikes on the crispy skin, with a sweet-and-sour taste that cannot be missed.

The excitement is not yet over as this 16-serving journey concludes with classic European desserts and a touch of Thai to celebrate the meal. The 15th serving begins with the ‘lemongrass coconut ice-cream and lime meringue’, presented as a beautiful white iceberg.

Last, but definitely not least, the meal finishes with the 16th serving – ‘pistachio soufflé with pistachio tuile and pandan ice cream’, a signature French dessert with a hint of refreshing Thai pandan ice cream – before concluding in style with the imaginative and very creative petit fours. This ‘Winter Journey’ is available at Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin from 1 November 2022 until 31 March 2023 for lunch, with a selection of an eight-serving menu at THB 2,150++ and a ten-serving menu at THB 3,200++; and dinner with a 16-serving menu at THB 3,900++. Pattaya’s International Fireworks Festival Returns in November One of Pattaya’s three biggest festivals, the Pattaya International Fireworks Festival returns November 25th & 26th to light up the skies of Pattaya. Further, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recently announced that the ‘Pattaya International Fireworks Festival’ has been named one of Asia’s top three Ocean Cities’ Festivals by the International Festivals and Events Association ASIA (IFEA Asia). Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said, “This is wonderful recognition for the Pattaya International Fireworks Festival, and also represents the fantastic and diverse festivals and events that can be enjoyed throughout Thailand during the calendar year.”

Organised by Pattaya City, the annual two-day Pattaya International Fireworks Festival is one of the seaside resort city’s most spectacular and exciting events. It draws pyrotechnic teams from around the world who light up the night sky in a series of dazzling fireworks displays.

City officials estimate over 100,000 domestic and foreign tourists will flock to the city for the event, making it the biggest event in Pattaya since 2019, pre Covid-19. Admission to the fireworks is free and many parking areas will be provided around the city as well as shuttles to the beach for the event.

Organizers of the event said they are going all out this year to celebrate Thailand being fully open to tourism again without any restrictions and the event will also have many concerts, cultural activities, and other features.

The inclusion of the Pattaya International Fireworks Festival among the top three festivals continues a winning tradition for Thailand. In 2021, the Songkran Festival (traditional Thai New Year) was named by the IFEA Asia as one of the three major festivals of Asia.

Vice President - Business Development at Magnolia Quality Development Corporation Limited (member of DTGO). Where I’m responsible and accountable for the formation of a Destination Property with a current value of 60Billion THB, positioned as Thailand’s first coastal family destinations. Next to that I hold a Board position at the Singapore-Thai Chamber of Commerce since 2017. Not set in stone, but I believe I was one of the first players that popularized the Multi Chamber business events in Bangkok …58 events later I’m still OG… although now a days everyone is copying the name due to its success.

Biscotti at the Anantara Siam ideal for Business Lunches Can’t go wrong with “El Mercado” midday or evening For a true wine feast “La Casa Nostra” And the beat goes on… What is your favorite “Special Occasion” restaurant? Hmm, I’m probably going to hurt some feelings here (the other restaurateurs) But Mia would be the ideal spot for Special Occasions. It’s a cozy restaurant with private rooms, I feel that the staff is attentive and the owners are visible when needed. The level of hospitality is warm and on par. What do you like most about your profession?

Where do you recommend first time visitors to Bangkok go?

Every aspect of Business Development is dynamic, it requires strategic and critical thinking which often leads to valuable dialogues with partners and colleagues. I enjoy conceptualizing the frameworks, decision cards and strategizing a path that will provide the company and stakeholder long term benefits and value. What I like most is utilizing my goodwill to support cross functional business units. In Asia they say “It’s not what you know, but who you know”

They should experience the NEW and OLD Bangkok. Start in Langsuan followed with a walk into Sala Daeng, followed by a swing across the riverside Charoenkrung and Charoennakhon. The Second tour will start in Ratchadamri, to Ratchaprasong followed by Phrom Phong district and Onnut.

Seeing your decisions make a tangible impact on organizational growth and expansion is very rewarding. I love to challenge the status quo! How long have you lived in Bangkok, and where did you live prior? I’ve been living in Thailand since May 2011, and before that time I lived in Amsterdam My birthplace and hometown What do you like most about Bangkok? Bangkok is cosmopolitan, it’s a city that never sleeps. The dynamic is hard to explain in words, but the energy and city dynamic is contagious. Each and every lifestyle can be accommodated, it’s a blend of traditions, cultures, cuisines, societies and Carpe Diem! What is your favorite restaurant? I’m a connoisseur and dining is one of the greatest pleasures in life. Some questions don’t have 1 answer, but I will try to keep it short. I’ve been to “Mia” a few times founded by chef-duo Pongcharn “Top” Russell and Michelle Goh, their set menu’s are so sexy

On a night out with friends, where do you like to go? Wine and Dine, I enjoy a good quality restaurant with Wine pairings. Each time I meet friends I try to choose a new establishment. Bangkok has a good selection of quality restaurants BUT there is also a notable turnover of restaurants(unfortunately) and that’s the main reason why I always want to dine at a new venue. In my lifetime I can’t experience all the establishments in the city anyways, but I try to make my time worth. After dinner a few cocktails with a Montecristo No2…my nightcap would be Irish Coffee(always!) Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? I have Surinamese roots and was born from a mix race couple. I’m a grandmaster in phlebotomy &I’m the biggest 80/90’s fan! What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done? I once booked a one-way ticket and packed 1 suitcase…11 years later I’m still at the same destination

L et’s Wine,

Whites Don’t Crack

O

r at least some of them don’t. If the biggest misconception about wine aging is that all wines can age, the second one has to be that only red wines can age well. And as all elaborate lies, it starts with some truth. As the saying goes there is no smoke without fire and many white wines are not suitable for consumption after a few years but when I was told recently that a 2019 Gerard Tremblay Chablis was “too old” I thought that this column was long overdue. First of all, let’s get it out of the way, white wines typically cannot age as long as red wines so be very careful when someone tries to sell you your birthday year Pinot Grigio. The tannins of the red wine protect it from going bad by shielding it from sunlight and acting as natural anti-oxidants. For example, red wine grapes with a high level of tannin such as Nebbiolo or Cabernet Sauvignon are predisposed to aging.

So, what does a white wine need to age? Oak – One might think that the purpose of oak aging is solely to give woody aromas to the wine, in which case why would we use old large barrels that give very subtle notes instead of new barrels that will develop aromas in a shorter period of time. In fact, the purpose of oak aging in white wines is usually to give it tannins and, in some cases, to develop MLF (Malolactic fermentation). Those extra tannins will allow the wine to age longer and more gracefully. The famous burgundy chardonnays usually undergo oak aging in old barrels for the 3 reasons cited above. Those wines are able to age over 10 years beautifully and in fact, drinking them too early would also be considered a faux-pas. Acidity – High levels of acidity in the wine will slow down any chemical process that makes the wines turn bad. Therefore, high acidity grapes such as Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin

Blanc or Chardonnay (on limestone soil and cool climates) will be able to spend some years improving in the bottle. Sugars – Probably the best example of aging white wines are dessert wines such as late harvest Riesling, Tokaji, Vin Santo or Sauternes. Those wines can typically age for decades. Some early 20th century Sauternes are still perfectly preserved. I recently opened a 2012 Santa Cristina Vin Santo and it was absolutely perfect, it could easily age another 10 years. However, a Moscato, despite being sweet will typically not be able to age very long because of its very low acidity content and no tannins. Alcohol – Fortified still white wines are also able to age and develop complex aromas over the years. Marsala or Madeira are good examples of it. Available in Hua Hin, you can find the lesser known but equally good Zibibbo Vino Liquoroso IGT or the Marsala Superiore Oro, both by Cantine Pellegrino.

Here are some of the superstars of ageing white wine to help you on your quest. - Chardonnay: Possibly the best examples of age-worthy still white wines are made from Chardonnay. Try to favor cooler climates that will have the level of acidity required for aging. Chablis, Meursault, Puligny or Chassagne Montrachet are all white wines that will age gracefully. Available in Hua Hin: Gerard Tremblay Chablis Premier Cru “Fourchaume” AOC -Riesling: Again, preferably in cold climates like Alsace, Germany, Austria or Northern Italy. Its high acidity combined with a very aromatic expression make for very good aging wines. Available in Hua Hin: Domaine Wachau Riesling Smaragd Ried Achleiten. -Semillon: Semillon is a part of the traditional Bordeaux blend and the main grape in Sauternes. Look for the oaked or botrytis versions of it. Available in Hua Hin: Baronne Charlotte AOC Graves

- Sauvignon Blanc: Just like Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc’s range is huge in terms of style and price range. Look for wines that undergo oak aging and preferably from cooler climates. Available in Hua Hin: Livon Sauvignon Valbuins DOC, Sancerre AOC “Cuvée Tradition” Florian Mollet. - Chenin Blanc: Someday I will write a whole column about the “Magician” grape that can do every wine from sparkling to sweet as well as spirits and a wide array of still white wines. If you can get your hands on an aged Vouvray, give it a try.

for aging, the vinification process of Marsala allows it to age. Available in Hua Hin: Cantine Pellegrino Marsala Superiore Oro. Armed with this knowledge, you will be able to find that particular gem that will change the whole perception that white wines are “the wines we drink before the serious stuff”. In my mind, there is nothing that touches a perfectly aged white wine at its peak.

- Viognier: Despite its relatively low acidity Viognier wines from the Rhones Valley usually undergo aging in oak barrels allowing them to age nicely. Available in Hua Hin: Paul Jaboulet Condrieu White “Les Grands Amandiers” AOC. - Grillo, Catarratto, Inzolia: Those 3 grapes are the traditional blend used to make Marsala wine. Although none of them would be particularly suited

Featuring three glamorous cabins with ensuite facilities, an indoor salon with an exceptional champagne bar, and an extensive outdoor deck for relaxing pursuits, sensational dining and sparkling conversations, Coquelicot will set a new standard of sophistication for slow-paced sailing in France.

To elevate the journey, Coquelicot has partnered with Maison Ruinart the world’s oldest champagne house, founded in Reims in 1729. Belmond guests will be treated to a private tasting lunch by Maison Ruinart’s Chef In Residence Valérie Radou and Coquelicot Head Chef aboard the new barge - it is the first time Maison Ruinart’s Chef will be cooking a private ‘four hands’ lunch outside of Maison Ruinart. As part of the collaboration, Coquelicot guests will also discover the brand’s

latest sustainability initiatives during private guided tours of the historic Taissy vineyard. Designed by the successful French duo, Humbert & Poyet, to complement the ever-changing views and create an intimate sanctuary on the water, Coquelicot will boast an impressive outdoor deck, three double cabins with marble ensuite bathrooms, and an indoor lounge for dining and recharging. The vessel’s top deck will be the jewel in the crown: two seating lounges, an

open kitchen and a shaded dining area will offer a choice of spaces for guests to unwind and laze around as they meander the calm waterways. Framed by potted herbs and wildflowers that root the space in the locality, the deck will invite guests to craft their own carefree bliss and take it to new heights. The barge’s interiors and exteriors will capture the essence of Champagne, with nods to the region’s hues and character. Local fabrics in earthy tones and raw materials will honour

Champagne’s agricultural heritage, while fluted walls, decadent interiors and pieces of art will pay homage to the land’s glorious present. Coquelicot’s namesake, the red poppy, will be found in subtle references such as the hand-cut red marble side tables and the tone-on-tone hand-painted petals that line the hallway, while the lounge’s sensational skylight is a celebration of Champagne’s water mapping legacy.

A technical tasting of iconic Maison Ruinart cuvées, led by a Maison Ambassador, will conclude the morning experience in the vineyard. Following the tour, guests will head back to Coquelicot where Maison Ruinart’s Chef, Valérie Radou, and Coquelicot’s Head Chef will work hand in hand to prepare an exceptional five-course lunch on the boat’s cinematic top deck. A true lesson in French art de vivre, this dining experience includes five seasonal dishes inspired by regional cuisine and paired with prestigious cuvées such as Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs and Dom Ruinart Rosé. Thailand Soars In CondéNast Readers Poll

T

hailand has been a popular tourist destination for decades thanks to its white-sand beaches, delicious cuisine and hot weather. Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, frequently holds the top spot as the world’s most visited city. It attracts around 22 million visitors each year. The 1,430 islands of Thailand draw in hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, some of the islands are heralded as being some of the best in the world. This was once again reaffirmed with the recently released Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2022 in which Thailand ranked high in most award categories. The kingdom scored 90.46, after Portugal (91.22) in first place and Japan (91.17) in second, and ahead of Singapore (90.09) in fourth. Similarly, Bangkok was only one of two Southeast Asian cities to appear on the list of the 10 ‘Best Cities in the World’. The Thai capital placed in 4th spot with a score of 89.36, after San Miguel de Allende in Mexico (92.94) in 1st spot, Singapore (89.49) in 2nd, and Victoria in Canada (89.46) in 3rd. Bangkok almost always appears in the top ten of major polls, and often in 1st place. Case in point, on October 20th Bangkok was voted the ‘Best Leisure City in the Asia-Pacific’ for the sixth consecutive time in the prestigious Business Traveller Asia-Pacific Awards 2022. On the list of the 10 ‘Top Islands’ in Asia, Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ voted Ko Samui 3rd with a score of 92.13, Phuket was 5th (90.88) and the Phi Phi Islands was 10th (76.41). Koh Samui was once known as the ultimate backpacker’s haven but is now a world-class leisure destination for global travelers of every kind. About 473 km and ten hours south from Bangkok, Samui is the third largest island in Thailand. Surrounded by crystal blue waters, the island of Samui is one of the top island destinations in the world, and why wouldn’t it be? It is a tropical treasure—filled with villages built entirely of bamboo, lush jungle interiors, turquoise-fringed beaches, and glorious sunshine all year round.

Ranking 5th place in the 10 top islands of Asia, Phuket is known as the pearl of the Andamans. Last Year, US NEWS ranked Phuket number 8 in their 2021 top 30 “World’s Best Places to Visit”, noting its outstanding sights, culture, scenic beauty, food scene, plus accommodation, boat trips, spa and wellness for all budgets as reasons for their endorsement, and we wholeheartedly agree. One strong positive to come of the Phuket shutdown during Covid was that the island’s natural resources had time to rejuvenate. Always part of its allure, the island’s forests, beaches, coral reefs, marine and land-based wildlife have all thrived and are in the best condition people can remember.

Phi Phi island was voted the 10th best island in Asia and we are surprised it didn’t rank higher. Phi Phi is actually a group of six islands. The two main islands are Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. The bigger and inhabited Phi Phi Don attracts the most visitors to stay in the beautiful shores while the smaller uninhabited Phi Phi Leh has stunning bays and beaches, including the world-famous Maya Bay. Maya Bay is where the movie “The Beach” starring Leonardo Dicaprio, was filmed. After the release of the movie, the islands came to worldwide prominence. Due to almost two decades of mass tourism, Maya Bay had planned to close for 4 months, but that turned into 3 years to fully allow its eco system to rejuvenate. Thankfully, on January 1st of this year Maya Bay reopened.

Formula E Delivers Record Breaking Global TV Audience

T

he ABB FIA Formula E World Championship has grown its cumulative audience for Season 8 beyond the record-breaking levels achieved in its previous season with a four-way battle for the championship, a new qualifying format and a return to racing in Asia contributing to the new highs.

64

HOT Magazine

What is Formula E? It is a single-seat motorsport championship for electric cars. The series was conceived in 2011 in Paris by FIA president Jean Todt and Spanish businessman Alejandro Agag, who presently serves as the chairman of Formula E Holdings. The inaugural championship race was held in Beijing in September 2014.

The Formula E championship is currently contested by eleven teams with two drivers each. The sport features electric-powered race cars similar in style to the hybrid-drive cars of Formula One, with racing generally taking place on temporary city-centre street circuits, 1.9 to 3.4 km (1.2 to 2.1 mi) long.

Points are awarded to the top ten drivers using the standard FIA system (25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1). The driver securing the pole position is also awarded 3 points, while the driver setting the fastest lap (if they finish in the top ten) additionally receives 1 point. For each race, fans can vote for their favorite driver via the official website

or app to give them an extra power boost which can be activated by pushing an overtake button. Voting starts 3 days before the event and closes after the opening 15 minutes of the race. The five winning Fanboost drivers each receive an extra power burst that can be used in a 5-second window during the second half of the race.

With the fifth season, a feature called Attack Mode was introduced, in which drivers receive an additional 35 kW of power after driving through a designated area of the circuit off the racing line. The duration of the boost mode and the number of boosts available are decided only shortly before each race by the FIA to reduce the time the teams have to find the optimal strategy.

Among a series of broadcast presentation and sporting enhancements introduced for Season 8, a new qualifying format saw all 22 drivers compete in two groups with the top four in each going into a head-to-head knockout ‘Duels’ tournament. A first for world motorsport and a popular innovation for fans, the cumulative audience for qualifying increased 49% compared to audiences for the traditional fastest-lap format in Season 7. The biggest-ever ABB FIA Formula E World Championship calendar of 16 races in 10 world cities included a return to Asia with successful debuts in Jakarta, Indonesia, and a double-header in Seoul, South Korea, to close Season 8. The Jakarta race in June was the first Formula E race in Asia since 2019 and was the most-watched domestic race in the championship’s 100-race history with a cumulative audience of 27.6m in Indonesia.

The combination of enhanced scheduling consistency and improved coverage of more competitive racing contributed to significant increases in the audience. Total viewing hours for Season 8 races increased by 58% compared to Season 7 and the championship enjoyed a 28% year on year increase in the average viewing duration per live race.

CRN and Tankoa Yachts’ 50-meter Kinda, both belonging to first-time yacht buyers. A rising trend that built significantly during the pandemic, when a substantial number of new buyers opted to go big rather than work their way up from a smaller yacht.

Simpson Marine, Southeast Asia’s largest yacht services company, sold 135 new and pre-owned yachts in 2021, a 20 percent increase on 2020, the previous best year for the company that was founded in 1984 by Mike Simpson.

In an interview given to CNN Travel, Bob Denison, president and founder of the Fort Lauderdale-based yacht brokerage Denison Yachting said, “People are thinking, ‘we’re not going to wait 10 years.’ They were coming out of nowhere and buying a 60-meter (yacht). “We’re still seeing a lot of that, and I think that’s something that will continue. People are taking the plunge.”

The recently held Monaco yacht show saw two large yachts on display, the 62-meter Rio from Italian shipbuilder

“We saw a carpe diem period in which prospective clients that had been hesitating from chartering or purchasing a yacht for months or for years, saying, ‘Okay, in this period of uncertainty, I need to enjoy life,’” he said. Arthur Brouwer, chief executive officer of Dutch shipyard Heesen, notes that “order books are quite full” across the board despite elements of global uncertainty, due to the “post-Covid push.” In fact, Boat International’s 2022 Global Order Book indicated that 1,024 superyachts were under construction or on order in 2022, an increase of 24%

over the previous year, with a 10.5% rise in orders for those measuring 45 meters and above. Luxury Hotelier Four Seasons is getting into the yachting game with a 679-foot superyacht charter that they say will offer a new kind of experience. Their yet to be named superyacht will offer 95 spacious suites, and has a profile reminiscent of a contemporary superyacht, but with many more decks and a “funnel” at the top resembling the smoke stack of a 1930s ocean liner. But on this new vessel, the funnel contains four decks of suites equaling 9,600 square feet.

Christian Clerc, president of Four Seasons hotels and resorts said. “We’re known for creating exceptional experiences, and we plan to expand Four Seasons even further with an incredible yachting experience.” Yacht charters, for those not willing or ready to invest the capital to purchase a large yacht are also seeing big increases in business, from both previous clients as well as first timers. The sector has become increasingly popular with those looking to embark on a bespoke vacation without the restrictions of a cruise ship’s set itinerary. From 16 to 19 November, Thailand

Charter Week will take place at the Phuket Yacht Haven Marina. Not open to the public, the Thailand Charter Week is Asia’s premier Business to Business charter event that is offered exclusively to professional charter brokers, charter agents, luxury travel and hotel operators and concierges. International industry professionals are invited to come and inspect some of Southeast Asia’s finest charter yachts and learn about the region’s best cruising grounds. This boating season there are spectacular yachts available for charter in Thailand. You’ll find a few of our favorites on the following pages.
