A Conversation With Marie Abalos
Bayuga, Mrs. National Globe 2022
Marie, you are from the City of Santa Rosa in the Philippines, how long have you lived there and what do you like about it most?
Yes. I was born and raised in the City of Santa Rosa, the Lion City of the South, located in the Province of Laguna. I am personally fond of the fact that I have seen its development from province to city. I have seen how every establishment was put up, how the city was established.
We are also known for our famous festival, the Sikhayan Festival—I was actually an active dancer in the festival every year from elementary school to high school! Celebrated every 18th of January, the Sikhayan Festival is a symbolic pledge made by the city residents towards a promising future carved through their hard work and discipline. Rosenian people are characterized as masikap. Largely dependent on basic agriculture and family-owned enterprises for livelihood, the town is a progressive place with peace-loving, trustworthy, and industrious people.
Features:
The Sikhayan Festival highlights the four elevations of the town: starting from aquatic to agricultural, professional, until it became a progressive industrial city. The much-awaited event is the Bayanihan Foundation Parade or the street dancing competition, which displays bayanihan, the Filipino spirit of cooperation. The main participants are the students of the town. Each group in the competition is a representative of their school. Competitors are clad in colorful costumes, and with their stunning appearances, they portray the rich and indigenous culture of the town through the art of dance.
The parade is only the beginning. City folks await the presence of celebrities and film stars mounted on various floats. The festival crowds include mascots, mobile patrols, and other residents who want to witness the parade. After the grand celebration during the day, the townspeople party all night with local bands.
Priding itself as a blooming city, The City of Santa Rosa is an ideal place for both local and foreign tourists for the exceptional revelry of the Sikhayan Festival. Over the years, thousands of participants have come to be part of its history.
The city of Santa Rosa is also known for our patron saint, St. Rose of Lima. The church, which stands in the middle of the town plaza, is known as the Santa Rosa de Lima Parish Church. It was built in the year 1792 with the arrival of
a Spanish Catholic priest, Fr. Francisco Favie. Both the church and the convent were completed within 12 years. It was blessed on August 4, 1812.
The first mass was held on August 30, 1812, in honor of St. Rose of Lima, with Fray Francisco Favie, O.P the first parish priest.
In 1970, Spanish priests built the current church building with labor from China who later became descendants of the old Chinese families in Santa Rosa including the Lijauco’s and the Tiongco’s. The old convent is now the main building of the Canossa School. Instead of Bucol, the residents chose to name the town Santa Rosa. The original building stands next to the Old Government Building and is known as the Museo de Santa Rosa.
What would you like people to know about the Philippines?
For Filipinos, it is a pleasure and the country’s honor to accept foreigners as visitors and build genuine relationships and friendship with them. As a matter of fact, Filipinos would usually greet their visitors with the phrase “Feel at home!” to ensure that they are at ease during their stay as they explore our beaches & mountains, and as they enjoy our food and festivities.
I want to emphasize the city that I represented in the National Pageant that gave me the opportunity to represent our country: this city is known for being the Shoe Capital of the Philippines—Marikina City.
Today, Marikina is known as the Shoe Capital of the Philippines because of its prolific shoe industry. It is also the home of the world’s largest pair of shoes certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. Furthermore, the Shoe Museum preserved most of the famous shoes of former First Lady Imelda Marcos. They are also known for being the cleanest and most disciplined city in the whole Metro Manila.
Can you tell us a happy childhood memory and where it took place?
One of my happy childhood memories was my recollection. My dream has always been to let my father to see me perform in front of a crowd, doing what I love the most—dancing. But since he was assigned in Tugeurrao City as a policeman, I grew up without him by my side. In this particular memory, I had just gotten home from my retreat, and I, along with my peers, was taken back to school because our parents would be picking us up. During times like this, I had learned to expect only my mother, as it has always been that way. But from afar, I saw a tall, dark
man with shining forehead, and I knew that it was my father! I had run towards him while shouting “that’s my daddy!” I had jumped at him, he carried me, and I kissed and hugged him while crying. All of my friends and teachers were happy to see me with my father and it was their first time seeing my father in the flesh. The knew one of my frustrations had been the fact that my father wasn’t always there to pick me up, but this time, he was.
At the 2022 Mrs. National Universe Pageant, you won the title Mrs. National Globe. As Mrs. National Globe, what role do you think you can play in empowering women?
For me, women empowerment is strengthening a woman’s sense of selfworth, supporting their ability to determine their own choices, and believing in their right to influence social change for themselves and others. I have been a speaker for single parents before, and I still communicate with them. With me, what you see is what you get. I am a good listener, I know how to give my advice & opinion regarding what the other person is telling me. I don’t just tell them advice from books or based on what I know to be right or wrong, but I always share my experiences and lessons that I’ve learned from all that I’ve already encountered. I always let them tell me what they think and what they want to say; from there I will know on how to help them. Empowering women is lifting each other up. Empowering women is letting other women know that they are not alone. What made you decide to enter the competition, and what memory of the pageant brings you the most joy?
I decided to join Mrs. Philippines International in 2019 and won the Mrs. Philippines National Universe title in 2019. I reigned for almost more than 2 years due to the pandemic. These experiences paved the way for my international pageant journey, and I soon represented the Philippines in the Mrs. National Universe pageant.
I joined to prove to my family that I can still achieve my biggest dream. Apart from this, I also want to be an inspiration to the young people who are struggling in the same way that I did 15 years ago. I want them to realize that being pregnant at an early age is not the end of the world and that they can still pursue their dreams as long as they are determined. I want to let them know that there are groups and institutions that can help them during and after their pregnancy.
If they know these things, they can be taught to handle life differently. They can strive to become a better version of themselves. My international pageant journey gave me a bigger platform to voice out my advocacy and a means to put this advocacy into action. I now receive plenty of messages from people who want to ask for my advice or share their stories. This, I think, is one of the most heartwarming parts of this journey.
This experience is definitely life-changing and memorable. I encountered a lot of problems from the beginning—I was put on hold in the Philippine Airport Immigration Office and missed out on the sashing ceremony and gala dinner on the first day of the competition. I was not happy with my answer during the Q&A portion. I knew that I could do better, but because of these unexpected and stressful circumstances, I, regrettably, lost a part of my fighting will.
However, I am very satisfied and contented with what I have right now. I am proud of myself—after all, I represented my country with pride! Who would have thought that I can still be a beauty queen with my age and marital status? Indeed, there is no age limit nor marital status in pursuing your dream. Always remember that a dream will not be a reality if one does not do anything about it.
If you could be granted the wish for the most perfect day, how would you spend it and who would you spend it with?
I would be selfish just for a day—I would like to see my Father again and spend the day with him. I had a lot of regrets when I still had him. I did not anticipate his loss; I did not expect his death to come that early. Back then when we had our family gatherings I always chose not to go home and join them because of my immaturity. I learned my lessons in the hardest and most painful of ways. I would use this day to bond with him and make the most out of that one special day.

Once a treasured residential villa for guests, the architectural gem and its surroundings have been extensively renovated, heralding a new era and purpose for this historic structure.

Visitors will find highlights from his prolific collection of eclectic and striking artworks which will be curated and rotated through the Gallery for them to admire and purchase. Bill’s proceeds from his art go to the Shinta Mani Foundation and Wildlife Alliance to support conservation and wildlife protection, causes very close to his heart.
According to Bensley “Long before
we started building The Siam, the owner Kriss and I took a boat upriver to find these century-old Thai teakwood houses, which belonged to OSS agent Connie Mangksau. Once upon a time they entertained the likes of Roger Moore, Jackie Kennedy and Henry Ford - and I am honored that now they will welcome my very own artwork!”
Thailand’s most iconic lifestyle brand, Jim Thompson will occupy the ground floor, creating a showcase of their latest fashion and homeware designs. This space will tempt and
tantalize guests to explore the world of Jim Thompson. This year, the brand has signaled a new chapter by launching Jim Thompson Heritage Quarter, Bangkok’s brand-new lifestyle destination which features an iconic “Museum About the Man”, a Home Furnishings Exhibition, a café and a new retail shop all located right next to Jim Thompson Art Center. The opportunity to open Connie’s Cottage for the benefit of all guests and visitors was ultimately irresistible. I could not be happier that we are partnering with such iconic brands as Jim Thompson and Bill Bensley; both of which bring additional style, energy and passion to the very center of our hotel”
A Secret Revealed at Italasia Hua Hin
Italasia divulged a secret to an invite-only group of local wine aficionados in December. Thierry Berno, Italasia’s Branch Manager, revealed a new Secret Tasting Room that he has surreptitiously created off the current Hua Hin Showroom. The entrance to this new Secret Tasting Room is expertly hidden in plain view along a wall of retail shelving and displays.
To celebrate the soft opening of this new exclusive Tasting Room, Branch Manager Thierry delighted his selected guests with a 13 wine tasting tour of Italy.
Fruili, in the east on the border with Slovenia and neighbouring Veneto, is where the wine journey started. Across the north to Alto Adige and Lombardy and on to Piedmont in the west, and then travelling into Tuscany before venturing down the east coast, stopping at Emilia Romagna, Le Marche and Abruzzo. A detour to Umbria, Campania, and then one of Italy’s smallest wine-growing regions,
Basilicata. Thierry then ventured with his guests into Puglia before leading on to Sicily and Sardinia.
From this epic wine journey, ‘tour leader’ Thierry’s favourites were the Arnaldo Caprai Montefalco Rosso DOC from Umbria with its blend of Sangiovese, Sagrantino and Merlot, which, in his experienced palate shows outstanding balance and a floral bouquet. And from Tuscany, the Chianti Classico Riserva “Marchese” Tignanello DOCG was perfectly balanced and very elegant, with nothing lacking and nothing in excess either.
A glorious polished timber table dominates the centre of this Secret Tasting Room with a wall of glasses and displayed wines, another imposing element. Add to that AV equipment for presentations, plus a chilled area at the rear of the room, with an eclectic selection of vinyl EPs and an old-school record player. This is a private space for those looking for a complete sensory experience with wine at its centre. The
Secret Tasting Room is ideal for limited groups of liked minded friends, special clients or work colleagues, sharing wine and fun in a private environment.

34 th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta
Asia’s legendary yacht race, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, first ran in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty, the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Ever since then, the event has been held during the first week of December.
After a two-year Covid hiatus, the 34th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta returned full force with some truly thrilling sailing. Defending champion and veteran Australian sailor Ray Roberts Team Hollywood narrowly edged out rival Thailand’s TP52 Kevin & Tom Whitcraft THA 72 to win the top-flight IRC Zero class in an exhilarating competition.
The IRC Zero class went right down to the wire: THA 72 won the first race of the final day leaving it trailing Team Hollywood by one point heading into the final race of the regatta. And if THA 72 had won the last race, it would have won the regatta as on countback it had won the second-last race of the event.
The two yachts duelled it out throughout the course and as they turned the top mark on the last leg of the final race, they were less than a boat’s length apart. Sparring all the way down the course, Team Hollywood, recorded six wins from ten races in this class, and was just able to pull out victory crossing the finish line by six seconds on corrected time over THA 72. World-renowned sailor Adam Minoprio, who was the tactician on Team Hollywood, said, “That was real racing today, nip and tuck all the way.”
The Singapore-registered boat WindSikher of Sarab Singh and Nick Burns finished third overall, but did manage to hang tough, sail every race and win the last contest in the series. It was the same one-two-three finish that this class saw the last time the regatta was held in 2019. And these three boats have won the regatta the last five times it has been held (Team Hollywood 2022, 2019 & 2018; THA 72 2017 & Windsihker 2016)
With a second-and-third place finish on the final day, Kazuki Kihara’s Japanese crew on Char Chan was able to hold on and win the IRC 1 class and avoid a late charge by Garry Holt’s Let’s Get It On, which won both races on the final day, and claimed second overall. Craig Douglas’ Ramrod clinched third overall based on a good day’s showing. Morten Jakobsen’s Hanuman XXXIX finished fourth, with. Matti Sepp’s Judy placed fifth the class.
Thais claimed victory in the Premier Cruising class, as Ithinai Yingsiri’s X-Yacht 55 Pine Pacific won again on the final day to claim victory over Peter Cremers sleek Warwick 75 Shatoosh and Simon & Chaa Piff’s Firstlight finishing third, although it did not sail on the final day.
Jakod Handte’s Fei Jian triumphed in The Charter Cruising Class, winning a division in the King’s Cup for the first time in thirty years of competition. Torben Kristensen’s Kinnon had to retire from the regatta after race two on day three when it collided with 2Fast4you, but it still claimed second place in the class over Masami Yamashita’s Inlova due to its first-place showings early in the regatta.
The Multihull OMR class did not compete on the final day but Hermann Schwarz’ 2Fast4you won every race in this class over Hang Chen’s ZOE, except for the race in which it had to withdraw because of its collision with Kinnon.
The International Dinghy Classes raced from December 3 until the 6th. Then there were five days of racing for the keelboats and multihulls, starting on the 5th and sailing through to the closing ceremonies on Saturday the 10th.
His Excellency Air Chief Marshal Chalit Pukbhasuk, a personal representative of His Majesty the King of Thailand, presided over the Royal Awards Ceremony and presented the trophies to the winners on Saturday afternoon.
The International Dinghy Classes (Optimist Boys, Optimist Girls, Open ILCA4, ILCA6, ILCA 7, 420, 470, and Open Skiff) saw 182 dinghies from Thailand, the United Kingdom, Singapore, India, Japan, Malaysia and China compete against each other off of Kata Beach.
Thais did very well in the dinghy competitions as Chanatip Tongglum won the Optimist Boys and Prin Subying won the Optimist Girls class. In the 29er class, Chaichanawut Deenak and Suthon Yampinit of Thailand lead the pack. Fellow countrywomen Narisara Satta and Nichapa Waiwai won the Skiff Boat class. The Open ILCA 7 saw Thai national Prakasit Hongpradab win with fellow Thais Paliga Poonpat and Chakkaphat Wiriyakitti winning the 420 class. The 470 class was captured by Navee Thamsoontorn and Panida Suksomporn also of Thailand.
The Open ILCA4 was won by Kenan Tan of Singapore with fellow countrymen Khoo Zachary taking the Open ILCA6 division and the Open Skiff championship was won by Anandi Chandavarkar of India.
Kevin Whitcraft, the president of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta organizing committee said at the royal award ceremony, “From the keel boat fleet to the largest dinghy fleet in the King’s Cup history, it has been a great tribute to His Majesty King Rama X, our host country and all who revel in the freedom of the seas – particularly in Thai waters. It has been three long years without the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta and we are pleased to have completed this event as the start of a new future for the Regatta showing that Phuket and Thailand are back in business as a destination for travel and sailing.
“On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I congratulate the winners and tell one and all, win – or lose –to come and join us again for the 35th regatta which will be held in December 2 to 9th 2023. For all returning sailors and newcomers, we look forward to welcoming you back and hosting you in the future.”
The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is organized by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organizing Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the RTN 3 and the Province of Phuket.
L et’s Wine, Everyday I’m bubbling
With the holiday season comes back a certain infatuation for anything popping and bubbling, an occasion for us to review different styles and methods used to instill those elusive bubbles in still wines and you will see that sparkling wine, while being the easiest of wines to drink, is possibly the most intricate to make.
Lexicon
Here are a few terms you need to be familiar with to discuss sparkling wine-making
Liqueur de tirage – This mix of yeast, sugar and sometimes wine is added to still wines to start a second fermentation
Liqueur d’expedition – Sugar added at the end of the wine making process to balance the sugar levels of the wine. This process is called dosage.
Yeast Autolysis - The breaking down of lees in the wine with ageing changing its aromas and feel and responsible for the creamy, doughy, toasty aspect of some sparking wines.
Riddling or Remuage – The process
to move the lees (dead yeast cells) in the bottle to favor yeast autolysis Disgorgement or Degorgement – The process to remove the dead yeast cells by freezing the neck of the bottle.
Charmat Method AKA Tank Method AKA Martinotti AKA Bulk Method
So many names for only one method.. This method is most famous for making prosecco in Italy and is gaining more momentum as the sales of Prosecco are now outweighing those of Champagne. First, we start with still wine which is usually made from Glera for prosecco and is, contrary to Champagne, quite aromatic. After adding some liqueur de tirage, the wine undergoes a second fermentation in closed and pressurized stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then cooled and filtered when moved to another pressurized tank before being bottled. Because of the process difference with traditional method and less lees autolysis the result is a more fruit-forward sparkling wine with larger bubbles that works well for casual and festive occasions. Some good examples of Martinotti
method wines in Hua Hin are the Palazzo Grimani Prosecco Dry Millesimato or the V8+ Prosecco Brut Berto DOC. Also made with this method you can find the sparkling red wine Lambrusco such as the Cavicchioli Lambrusco Grasparossa Amabile.
Traditional Method AKA Methode Champenoise
AKA Classic Method
This is the most labor-intensive and complex method.
The process usually starts with a non-aromatic still wine, made from ripe but young grapes, moved and harvested carefully to preserve their freshness. The most widely used grapes for Champagne are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The wine is usually fermented at 10.5 to 11.5 ABV as the second fermentation will add another 1.2 to 1.5 ABV to the liquid. It is important to note that in champagne the producers will usually blend different vintages of still wine to match the style of the producer. Those wines are called Vin de Reserve. As a result, most champagnes will be classified as non-Vintage wines (abbreviated to NV) and wines made with a high pro-

portion of a single vintage will be allowed to add a year to the label and the mention “Millesime”. Most renowned champagne wine makers will only produce Millesime Champagne in exceptional years. Contrary to the Charmat method the liqueur de tirage is added directly inside the bottle and the second fermentation happens within the glass. Afterward there is a long period of riddling before disgorgement. The result is a wine with aromas of brioche, toast, croissant and fine but persisting bubbles. Most champagnes are able to age significantly. In Hua Hin you can enjoy the De Venoge Cordon Bleu Brut or the Delamotte Blanc de Blancs Millesime.
Cava is also produced using the traditional method all around Spain and is typically made with those 3 major grape varieties for Macabeo (AKA Viura), Xarel-lo and Parellada
The Transfer Method
This method is a combination of the Traditional and the Charmat and is an excellent compromise to make complex wines with less labor costs. The wines undergo a second fermentation on lees
inside the bottle as in the traditional method but are then transferred to high pressure tanks to be cooled and filtered like in the Charmat method thus saving time on riddling and disgorging.
The Continuous Method
While similar to Charmat this method allows to add some liqueur de tirage as the wine is moved from tank to tank as well as oak shavings that the yeast will feed on to give a more oaky and toasty feel to the final product. There is also the addition of a buffer pressurized tank before counter-pressure bottling to maintain as much bubbles as possible. Due to the use of various tanks in series this method is called continuous.
The Ancestral Method AKA Artisanal Method AKA Rural Method
As its name may suggest, it is the oldest method in the book to put bubbles into still wine and most likely originated from southern France around Limoux (comment est votre blanquette?). With this method the still wine is partially fermented but is then bottled with remaining live active yeast and sugars. While being econom-
ical this method can’t produce a very consistent and standardized product. As a result, it remains a niche product although regaining popularity as the trend now favors Natural Sparkling wines (also called Pet Nat for Petillant Naturel). Modern technics allow to use some liqueur de tirage and filtration to standardize the production.
Carbonation Method AKA Soda Method
Possibly the less interesting method, the carbonation consists in forcing gas into still wine the same way we make soda and not by fermentation therefore not adding any flavours or aromas to the still wine. This method is usually used for industrial mass-distribution sparkling wines.
You are now armed with all the knowledge you need to find your sparkling wine of choice for the year end celebration. Remember to enjoy with moderation and see you next year.

L et’s Stay, The Siam, Bangkok
The Siam was conceived by creative director and celebrity Krissada Sukosol Clapp. When Kriss inherited a piece of prime riverside land, he was instantly inspired to build a hotel on the site to house his substantial collection of antiques. Knowing the gorgeous property deserved something truly special, he brought Bill Bensley on board.
Since 1989, Bill’s firm, BENSLEY, has designed some of the world’s most
iconic hotels, resorts, spas, homes, and sometimes even palaces. Bensley has brought to life over 200 resorts, hotels, and palaces in 30+ countries.
Bill has designed a few hotels in the Kingdom, but in Bangkok his masterpiece is Kriss’s hotel, The Siam. The 38-suite-and-villa urban boutique luxury resort is located on 3 acres of verdant frontage along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok’s Royal Dusit District.
Bensley’s design reflects the period
of Bangkok’s greatest grandeur, under King Rama V (circa 1853-1910), with Art Deco accents and Thai antiques, it is the kingdom’s premier resort.
The Siam offers seven different room types with the smallest, their Siam, Garden View, & River View suites coming in at a very spacious 80 square meters, (860 square feet). Their Premier Garden View & Premier River View Suites are 100 square meters (1,100 square feet), and their Courtyard & Riverside
Pool Villas come in at a stately 130 square meters, (1,400 square feet).
All suites and villas are outfitted with plush furnishing, a super-sized king bed and lofty ceilings. Each is individually designed with original turn of the century artworks, antiquities, and is looked after by a personal butler.
For an unforgettably unique experience, relish the exclusivity of dining or staying in one of their three traditional, century old Thai teakwood houses
brought downriver from the ancient capital of Ayutthaya by former owner Connie Mangskau and her silk tycoon friend & fellow spy, Jim Thompson. In these homes Connie hosted an array of cosmopolitan characters, including Jacqueline Kennedy, Henry Ford, William Holden, John Rockefeller and Roger Moore.
When staying at The Siam, you are treated to culinary experiences like no other. Their Chon Thai Restaurant is
the resorts Signature Thai restaurant. The Story House offers Contemporary cuisine with modern flavours, while Bathers Bar, their poolside outlet serves light bites and beverages. The Siam also has their own teak Sala Thai boat offering private sunset cocktail cruises.
Amenities abound at The Siam and include their riverside infinity pool with children’s splash pool, a meeting room that can accommodate twenty, and a library with screening room. You’ll also find an antique & art gallery, a vinyl room with a large collection of records & a private pier for river excursions. Finally, there is complimentary scheduled shuttle boat service between The Siam and Bangkok’s central Sathorn pier.
The Siam Hotel’s Opium Spa is a sanctuary of wellness in the heart of Bangkok. Their exclusive Sodashi therapies and spa products not only regenerate the skin, but also impart a profound sense of wellbeing to spirit and mind. Unparalleled in performance and purity, Sodashi employs only the finest ethically-sourced essential oils and plant actives to visibly heal and nurture.
Choose from facial, body and massage therapies, or indulge in a tailored multiday spa package to suit your individual desires. They also offer a kids’ and teen spa treatment menu and a full-service hair and nail salon.
While visiting the Opium Spa, consider getting a sacred tattoo. Sak Yant tattooing is a traditional form of tattooing magical ancient geometric and deity symbols with Buddhist prayers onto the body. These Yants impart magical powers for luck, protection, charisma, fortune and other powers onto the wearer.
The Thai’s believe receiving a Sak Yant is a unique life-changing and near spiritual experience. As such, The Siam chose to support and work with Sak Yant Master, Ajarn Boo by creating a studio within the hotel’s Opium Spa where guests could receive their Sak Yant in surroundings honouring the traditional process.
Ajarn Boo states “I suggest people to begin with a simple Hah Taew (5 Line Yant) or Gao Yord (9 Line Yant) to see that they can handle the power. Other yants with different powers are available, depending on what you want and whether I feel it is correct for you. I will not give anyone whatever tattoo they want as I am responsible for the Yants and power that I give people. “
The Siam boasts a fully equipped gym with floor to ceiling mirrors and windows. You’ll find Life Fitness and Octane equipment alongside original Art Deco gymnasium doors from France, vintage sports posters, old wooden dumbells and antique leather punching bags. Engage one of their Muay Thai Trainers and work out in the gym or take a yoga class on their outdoor yoga terrace.
The Siam’s spacious period-style library is home to the hotel owner’s private collection of rare, first edition hardback books on Siam and Asia dating back over a century, as well as a breathtaking display of his mother’s 2100 BC-200 AD Neolithic pottery.
The Siam’s private screening room within the spacious period library seats up to 15 and features original, antique folding wood & red velvet 1930s French cinema seats.
With the uniqueness that is The Siam, it is an ideal locale for joyous unions. From your engagement ceremony, pre-wedding photos, to cherished wedding, their talented team can handle every detail of your oh so very special day.
The Siam is your private urban sanctuary in the wild and mad city of Bangkok. It is a stunning luxury hotel replete with exquisite art & antiques, set amidst lush gardens on the Chao Phraya River, with Bangkok’s must-see historical and cultural attractions nearby.

The 7th Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous & Poker Run
By invitation only, the Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous is designed to bring like-minded people together from a personally curated guest list that features Kata Rocks villa owners, superyacht owners, HNW (high-net worth) & UHNW (ultra-high-net worth) individuals interested in yachting and luxury lifestyle, industry professionals plus an influential mix of international and regional lifestyle, luxury travel and
yachting media.
For the 7th consecutive year, the yachting crowd in Phuket and beyond gathered at Kata Rocks for the Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous (KRSR) from 8-10 December 2022. Organized by Infinite Luxury and hosted by Kata Rocks, the event commenced on the evening of the 7th with the traditional dinner for the villa owners at Kata Rocks.
KRSR guests and yachts started ar-
riving at Kata Rocks on Thursday the 8th and were welcomed with lunch and a yacht hop to see the Demarest Clinic yacht, moored in the bay in front of Kata Rocks. This elegant yacht generously served drinks and canapes to the visiting guests. In a luxury tasting in the wine cellar, Japanese spirits were sampled by the KRSR guests including 3 different kinds of gin and vodka. The evening was dedicated to the traditional Partner & Sponsor’s BBQ, which was
attended by about 120 invited guests and filled with fun and entertainment.
On Friday the 9th, with a rough sea, only some of the fleet chose to cruise up the west coast of Phuket to Carpe Diem Beach Club in Bang Tao. However, the lunch was packed as others chose to go by road. After the cruise back to Kata Rocks, many of the guests attended a single malt whisky tasting in the Wine Room sampling 12, 15 and 18 year old whiskies.
Due to the weather conditions, the scheduled yacht hop and Big Boys’ Toys on Saturday 10 December could not take place. It was a spectacular sight when our partners were demonstrating the E-foil, wing sup with its green sail and the i-Aquas in the sea right in front of Kata Rocks.
The Saturday evening’s closing party in 007 BOND style was as always, a huge success, with a number of surprisingly creative Bond outfits and even
more stunning Bond girl outfits. Live violin music accompanied dancers on stage whilst being circled like sharks by the iAquas in the Kata Rocks pool, a cat-girl fire show, models clad in gold serving food and drinks, a six-piece band followed by DJ Armina and DJ Fabio. The finale, was an illuminated flyboarder in the Kata Rocks infinity pool shooting fire and surrounded by a spectacular firework show all in proper BOND style.
The third edition of the Kata Rocks Poker Run (KRPR) took place on Sunday 11 December and saw it to be a beautiful day with enthusiastic participants. The route around the island of Phuket started at Kata Rocks, with a second start at Koh Rang Noi. On the way, participants collected playing cards at respectively: Xana Beach, the Playyard, Koh Rang Noi and Banana Beach, with a final card upon return to Kata Rocks. A distinct level of friendly ‘Miami Vice’ vibes is always part of the KRPR with the focus on a day of fun out on the water. The event concluded with a relaxed BBQ and presentation of the trophy to the winner, “Noh Rules”. The prize winners were the boats with the best Poker hand. Prizes varied from a 2-night stay at Kata Rocks for the winner to an overnight stay at the Playyard for “Ninja 1” and a dinner voucher for the Atoll Floating Restaurant at Angsana for “KR Charter”. Murano also gave out some fantastic glassware as additional prizes for the three winning boats.
Richard Pope, CEO of Kata Rocks said, “Despite some difficult sea conditions, the KRSR and Poker Run have once again proved to be a fantastic few day of partying on and off the water. We’d very much like to thank all our sponsors who helped make it such an enjoyable few day for all involved.”
HOT Magazine Celebrates 10th Anniversary Honoring Notable Women
On 6 December, HOT Magazine celebrated its 10th anniversary with a Red-Carpet Charity Gala Dinner, which was held at the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort.
The evening saw the inaugural launch of the HOT Magazine Awards, which going forward will be a yearly event. This year HOT honored phenomenal women in 3 categories, The HOT Magazine Women Inspire Awards, The HOT Magazine Women Innovation Awards, and the The HOT Magazine Global Impact Awards. All in all, 25 women were recognized for their achievements and walked down the red carpet to receive their awards and give a speech on stage.
The evening was also a charity event with Hotels and Businesses donating terrific prizes for the silent auction and raffle. The benefactor was Rescue Paws, a wonderful organization that creates brighter futures for the stray dog & cat population of Thailand through education, sterilization, adoption and community outreach.
The sold-out event started at 6pm with cocktails and bubbles on the InterContinental’s Larn-Rom Courtyard, before moving inside to the ballroom at 7:30pm for a sit-down dinner and entertainment.
The first awards of the evening were the HOT Magazine Women Inspire Awards. This award recognizes an individual whose example is so noteworthy as to spontaneously inspire others. This award is given to someone who not only embraces their personal ability to create influence for meaningful change but influences others to embrace theirs.
The second set of awards were the HOT Magazine Women Innovation Awards. As an innovator, this woman is recognized for implementing something new with a following that matters. It’s one thing to create something new; it’s quite another to scale the innovation from concept to reality…be it concrete or intangible with evidence of success (potentially) across international boundaries. This award recognizes the creativity combined with the functionality towards solving a problem be it, for example, in the realm of export, research, thought leadership, manufacturing, technology or health.
Finally, the last awards were the HOT Magazine Women Global Impact Award. The women receiving this award are recognized for breaking down barriers in her industry with documented success. She believes in empowering women to follow in her footsteps. She is a visionary leader of an international or global corporation. Her significant contribution to the
Global Impact Award Winners:
betterment of her community locally, nationally and globally..
The evening ended with the raffle and silent auction. A total of 73,000 baht was raised for Rescue Paws which they put to great use. The organization bought a machine that anesthetizes the animals with gas, instead of injecting them as they did previously. The benefits are a faster recovery time, it is safer,
and it’s less expensive on a per use basis. It also allows them the provide oxygen therapy which they couldn’t do before. Entertainment for the evening was provided by Ponchai Dokmai , Napon Yasothorn, & Khun Ann.
HOT Magazine would like to give a big thanks to all of the great companies who donated their services for the raffle and silent auction. Kathy Heinecke Proudputh Liptapanlop Khun Sumanee Guna KasemBrought to you by
