EDITOR’S
NOTE
F
or the 16th year, Industry Excellence was celebrated at the Property Guru Thailand Property Awards in Bangkok. Thanks to Covid, this year’s award ceremony, for the first time ever, was a virtual event, with a winner’s celebration set for 2022.
Extending its record as the longest running programme of its kind in the Kingdom, the 16th PropertyGuru Thailand Property Awards awarded distinctions to great developers, projects and designs in 37 categories. Award recipients this year represented cities and regional markets as diverse as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, the Eastern Seaboard, Hua Hin, Phuket, Samui, and the Thai upcountry. Sansiri Public Company Limited won the ultimate accolade of Best Developer, a title it had previously won in 2013. Put on your Virtual Tuxedo or Magnificent Gown and turn to page 38 to find out who else walked away with trophies and bragging rights this year.
Ever wonder how the wealthy individuals of our world book their luxury vacations, get privileged access to VIP events or arrange a bucket list experience? They certainly don’t jump on the internet to scroll through various travel sites. Instead, they reach out to their Luxury Concierge. From private jets to luxury villa rentals and superyachts, off-market hotel suites, or private island holidays, these specialist ‘fixers’ offer the proverbial backstage pass to those who embody the statement that money truly is no object. No request is too big, complicated, or expensive for these enablers to the super-rich. Dig out your bank book and turn to page 56 for our sit down with Luxury travel consultant, & Thailand resident, John B Sutherland, to find out where some of the super wealthy will be spending their holidays in 2022.
Who says dreams don’t come true? Thanks to Bentley Bangkok, I was able to spend the day driving my dream car, the Bentley Continental GT. I chose the Bangkok to Pattaya motorway for my hours of Bentley bliss, which allowed me to put the car thru its paces. It goes without saying that I have never made the drive as quickly or as pleasurably as I did when I was behind the wheel of the Continental GT.
As we end the interesting year of 2021, all of us at HOT Magazine would like to wish you and yours, a very healthy, happy & better 2022.
The car is preposterously fast, in a ludicrous way. When pressing down on the accelerator, you don’t feel a massive surge, instead, it’s an immediacy, which took some getting used to. Put on your driving gloves and turn to page 44 to see why a Continental GT might make the top of your wish-list.

L et’s Meet,
Joseph Della Gatta What is your full name and age? Joseph Della Gatta... and 54 is the new 20 right?
What is your current Job Position? I am the General Manager at one of the most iconic Resorts, the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort.
How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? Hua Hin has come to be a very special place for my family and I. In all the years that my family and I have lived in Thailand, Hua Hin would have to be one of the places that we most often find ourselves frequenting to on holiday, and it’s surreal to finally be graced with the opportunity to work here!
What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? I always knew Hua Hin as a yearround incredible destination to visit, with many amazing beaches, breathtaking mountains, viewpoints, Temples, night markets, water parks, and a culinary delight destination satisfying an array of palates from fine dining, fine wine, to local seafood restaurants with an emphasis on local products.
What do you like most about your profession? I have always had the thought of a career that is challenging, interesting, and makes a difference in people’s lives on a daily basis. What swung the pendulum to hospitality was the travelling and the love of learning and experiencing new cultures. During my career, I’ve met guests from all over the world, from all walks of life who have now become my lifelong friends because of the level of attention and care that the team has delivered. I find it very gratifying when a guest tells me that they’ve has the most memorable vacation because I know that my team and I have played a part in their lives and delivered something priceless. Over my career I’ve been fortunate to have incredible mentors that have helped me on my hospitality journey and shaped me into the hotelier I am today. I am now in a position to pay it forward and I find it very enriching to share my knowledge and experience

with the next generation of hoteliers. Personally for me, the greatest success for me as a General Manager is seeing the individual growth, progression and success of the team members.
What do you like least about your profession? For every positive that comes with traveling and being based in some of the world’s most exotic destinations, there’s a negative, and for me that would have to be leaving my teams behind. I recently left the Maldives, and the goodbyes never get any easier. In an industry like ours where all team members play an equally important role, you tend to become a family and rely on each other for everything and anything. So as excited as I was to return to Thailand, it was upsetting to have to leave behind a very dedicated team.
What do you like most about Hua Hin? Being based in Bangkok, you’re amidst so many people that you hardly actually see anyone. So, to be in a resort destination such as Hua Hin, you’re offered the best of both worlds. It’s far enough from Bangkok to feel off the beaten path, but close enough to share the cultural, social, and opportunity-rich haven that the big city offers-whilst also being a lot more laid back allowing me to really open my heart to the people and environment around me.
What is your favorite restaurant and why? (please don’t promote your own restaurants) My favorite restaurants are those that embrace local produce and sustain the local economy…In Hua Hin with so many to choose from, one of my favorites would undoubtedly be the Sopa Seafood Restaurant. This restaurant has some of the freshest seafood that I have ever tasted as they source their seafood daily from local fisherman. It’s a place where I can go with my family to enjoy our time and food together, surrounded by that same sense of community that I cherish so dearly.
What do you like to do in your free time and why?
My day begins with time for myself at 5.00 am with a great workout, which is how I clear my head in preparation for the day ahead. Scuba diving and fishing are some of my greatest passions, and to be able to do so with my two sons are some of my favorite things to do; I love spending as much time as I can with my family. Enjoying a great meal with friends, guests and repeat guests is also pretty high up on the list.
What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why? With so many attractions in Hua Hin, this is a tough question. If I had to pick one, the first would be be to visit one of Thailand’s most famous temples right here in Hua Hin - Wat Huay Mongkol Temple. Not only being architecturally astonishing, the Temple has an enormous statue of one of Thailand’s most famous monks, named Luang Phor Thuad and when at the temple wish for, good luck, health, fortune and happiness.
Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? When deciding on my career I wanted to choose a career involving people and play a part of connecting and making a difference to their lives, hence I Initially I wanted to go into Nursing, but decided to venture into hospitality and be able travel the world.
What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? Singing is not my forte and yet somehow, someone managed to convince me to sing karaoke and in doing so, four universal truths were revealed. Firstly, I really can’t sing. Secondly, nobody really cared because neither could they. Thirdly, when people say they’re on the way, it means that they haven’t left the house yet. Fourthly, it was just pure, plain, unadulterated fun, and that you shouldn’t let your insecurities stop you from pursuing something because people care a lot less than you think.

here’s a new kid in town, and this one is said to have an irreverent and playful style in its design, detail and service. Even the upside-down bright red logo suggests to expect something different. We are talking about The Standard Hua Hin, the newest addition to the Royal Resort towns international hotel offerings. Always wanting to be in the know, the “Let’s Eat” team ventured in to check out their dining options, and specifically Lido, their Italian all-day

dining spot. The Beachfront is where the restaurants, bars and general recreational facilities are, requiring a stroll through the hotel, consisting of several low rise accommodation buildings. All overlook tranquil lawns shaded by longestablished mature trees. Bright stark white of the buildings, the calming green of nature and splashes of canary yellow in seemingly casually left garden furniture is the colour palate as we wander through the resort.
That is until you emerge to the pool and beachfront area, where colours burst through - the yellows of the deck chairs, light blues of the sunbeds, green of the expansive lawns and dark blues of the inviting resort pool. And as the ultimate backdrop, the beach, ocean and blue sky. The open-air Lido pool bar with twin flat-top mushroom-like roofs is immediately inviting, with mixologists shaking away. The bar operates from 10 am to 7 pm, with happy hour between 4 and 6 pm. Buy 2 get 1 free on Draft

Beers like Stella Artois or Hoegaarden, and Signature Cocktails including Pink or Frozen Mango Margaritas, or the Obligatory Aperol Spritz. Lido restaurant is directly adjacent to the pool with its alfresco feel, inside and outside dining, light timber tones of the walls and chairs, splashes of burnt orange, muted mint green and tropical prints interspersed across the upholstered chairs and bench seats. Vibrant prints dominate some of the walls. And with the pool, garden, and beach outlook, this is what a relaxed
resort dining vibe is all about. Lido’s Italian themed menu offers Small Bites, Starters, Soups & Salads plus Pasta, Pizza, Main, and Grills. So, if you want a snack, a quick lunch or a full meal, you have an abundance of choice. The complimentary selection of in-house-made bread delivered to the table once we placed our orders was an appreciated touch. Lido’s wine list offers a diverse and comprehensive though not overwhelming, selection of white, red and sparkling bottles, plus wines by the glass.
Our Lido food journey started with Artichoke Salad, a delightful mix of salad leaves shavings of Parmesan Reggiano, olives and a white balsamic dressing accompanying the artichoke hearts. Next, warm Arancini with their crunchy crust, rice and a centre of mushroom, cheese and hints of truffle. Arancini has to be the best southern Italian street food ever.

Gazpacho rounded out our first course. Though more associated with Spain than Italy, this pureed chilled soup of tomato, cucumber and bell peppers was made even more luxurious with the generous addition of large pieces of succulent crab meat and just a lingering chilli heat at the end. All three dishes were delightful offerings of Mediterranean yum! We chose a dish each from the pasta, pizza, and grill selections for our main meals. Crab & Chili - Angel Hair Pasta, chilli, extra-virgin olive oil, parmesan, and generous portions of crab meat. The generosity of the crab made the dish, and according to our server, this is their most popular pasta dish. Red or White Pizzas are the choice presented to diners, and we chose the 4 Cheeses from the white pizza offerings. The made-in-house pizza dough comes crisp with just the right thickness and a lightness of the base we prefer. Ricotta, also made in-house, parmesan, mozzarella, and gorgonzola were blended with an outstanding balance. The gorgonzola came in little pops of blue cheese flavour in every other mouthful.

Wagyu Striploin Tagliata is 220 grams of tender-as and grilled to our liking, wagyu beef served sliced on the plate, or ‘tagliata’ in Italian. The meat is covered with a light textured, though piquant, pepper sauce accompanied by roasted celeriac and tomatoes, plus mixed salad greens. The roasted celeriac with its delicate bite and slightly sweet overtones was a perfect foil for the edge of the pepper sauce. Our Lido food journey was ending, though not before desserts, of course. Two Italian classics and, well, a combination of two classics on one plate is how this tasty Mediterranean sojourn edges towards the finish line. First, that combination, rich dark chocolate cake, near brownie-like in texture, accompanied by zabaglione (or sabayon in French). Zabaglione is a luscious Italian custard-like sauce made by whisking egg yolks, sugar, and often a sweet wine like Marsala over a gentle heat. Lido’s version sees punchy Grappa used
as the flavouring for this warm sauce adding an extra oomph to the dessert. Next, Panna Cotta (Italian for “cooked cream”) is said to have originated in the northern Italian region of Piedmont. Warmed sweetened cream thickened with gelatine and flavoured with vanilla is cooled and set. With Lido’s version, this is served with a zingy raspberry granita, which had more of a sorbet texture and is a suitable counterpoint to the creamy sweetness of the Panna Cotta. To round out our sweet samplings, Tiramisù, one of Italy’s most famous desserts with the word translated to “pick me up.” And how could a combination of spongy ladyfinger biscuits soaked in coffee, surrounded by a mixture of eggs, creamy mascarpone cheese, and a little sweet wine, coated with cocoa, not be the ultimate end of meal lift? Lido’s pastry chef even makes the ladyfinger biscuits in-house for this plate of delight.

the company’s three model lines, Continental, Flying Spur, and Bentayga. The combination of fine craftsmanship, using skills that have been handed down through generations, alongside engineering expertise and cutting-edge technology, is unique to UK luxury car brands such as Bentley. It is also an example of high-value British manufacturing at its best. The Grand Tourer is the 3rd gen-
eration of Bentley’s all-wheel-drive vehicle. 635 Horsepower catapult the luxury coupe, which weighs around 2.2 tons, from 0 to 100 km in 3.7 seconds with a maximum speed of 333 km per hour. Thanks to Bentley Bangkok, I was given a Bentley Continental GT to drive for the day. I chose the Bangkok to Pattaya motorway for my hours of Bentley bliss, which allowed me to put the car thru its paces. It goes without
saying that I have never made the drive as quickly or as pleasurably as I did when I was behind the wheel of the Continental GT. The car is preposterously fast, in a ludicrous way. When pressing down on the accelerator, you don’t get a massive surge, instead, it’s an immediacy, which took some getting used to. The car has four driving modes, accessed thru a rotary controller. Comfort mode optimises the drivetrain and
chassis for luxurious cruising, while Sport ensures the car’s power and handling are instantly responsive. Bentley mode provides the ultimate balance of both, while Custom gives you the freedom to save your own combination of settings. When it comes to engines, you have your choice of the beefy W12 or the jauntier V8. The W12 is undoubtedly the one to choose if you’re buying a Bentley to revel in excess – it’s the
quieter of the two engines, comfortably the most powerful, and perhaps the one that suits the Continental’s swagger best. The car I drove had the V8, and I’ve been told it is the sportier option. The car’s lighter at the front end, defter in corners and it makes more of a noise under heavy throttle loads.

When it comes to interiors, both in quality of materials used and craftsmanship, Bentley is practically peerless, and the Continental GT is a prime example of its finest work. You can even get a new type of leather quilting called ‘diamond in diamond’, which results in an opulent look and incredible softness of touch. It took 18 months to develop this effect, and each diamond shape takes 712 stitches to create. The central infotainment screen measures 12.3-inches and contains Apple CarPlay. It controls the multimedia system, sat-nav and so on. If all of this appears too futuristic, you can press a button on the dash to rotate the screen away into the dashboard, revealing a continuation of the dashboard veneer or three yacht-like dials displaying the temperature, a compass and a clock. Laminated acoustic glass is used, giving a nine-decibel reduction in interior noise over the outgoing car. And the last Continental GT’s cabin was already whisper quiet.

New for 2022 is the re-introduced Continental GT Speed, available in coupe or convertible. It’s powered by a 650 horsepower version of the car’s formidable W12 engine and has added updates to improve agility. Breathtaking levels of nimbleness are made possible by the introduction of Electronic All-Wheel Steering alongside Torque Vectoring by Electronic Limited Slip Differential (eLSD). These are combined with Bentley’s Dynamic Ride electric active roll control system to give you the stability you need to tackle even the most dramatic corners. Switch into Sport driving mode, and this GT’s true character is unleashed. It is specially calibrated to ensure the engine responds incredibly rapidly to the driver’s needs, by upshifting later when accelerating and downshifting earlier when decelerating, it delivers exhilaration. The transmission shifting is also lightning-fast – quicker than in any other Bentley – to further enhance that responsiveness.

ver wonder how the wealthy individuals of our world book their luxury vacations, get privileged access to VIP events or arrange a bucket list experience? They certainly don’t jump on the internet scrolling through various sites looking for what they need. These always-connected and on-the-go high-net-worth individuals know time is one thing they can never get back. When something needs organising, they email or message their Luxury Concierge or Lifestyle Travel Consultant. One such arranger of bespoke events is Scotland born, and South East Asia based John B Sutherland – a Lifestyle Travel Consultant. HOT magazine recently had the pleasure to sit with John and learn more about what he does and how he got into such a unique and specialized business.

You specialise in delivering unique and luxe one-off events in some of the world’s most exclusive destinations. How did you get into this business? I spent many years in financial services in the UK and Asia. And in the 1990s, I also organised music events and supported bands like Celtic rockers Runrig touring stadiums in Europe. In 2000, I came to Asia for a break, my first time in this part of the world. I landed in Jakarta with the view of staying three months but loved the life here. So, six months later, I went home to tidy up my affairs and returned, and South East Asia’s been home ever since. In 2009 I joined a friend who started a luxury travel business based in Singapore, and that went well though ultimately, I decided to follow the path I’m on now. I was fortunate to have some very well-off clients from my financial services time. It’s these, or through these people, that I’ve developed a client base. Additionally, my time in the music industry taught me how to find people I needed to connect with. These ever-expanding networks are

an essential element of my business. So, what are some of your most memorable successes? One of my European clients, a junior chess champion, wanted something around chess, and I was able to get chess grandmaster, former World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov, to spend a few days with the client. That same client was on Richard Branson’s Necker Island in the Caribbean the following year and was able to play several games with Branson, who is also a chess lover. Another client from India had made several trips in the Himalayas to sight the very elusive snow leopards, with no luck. They asked if I could help, so I talked to one of the world’s leading big cat photographers Steve Winter from National Geographic. He put me in touch with his contact, and I got the trackers out a week before the client’s arrival to find the best observation spots. The outcome was that they saw a snow leopard on the second day of their trip. They ended up enjoying multiple sightings over a ten-day trip and were overjoyed.
Turin Castle Scotland
Other memorable successes include a private Patagonia glacier cruise, luxe private African safaris, Formula 1 high jinks in Iceland, helicopter fishing in the British Colombian wilderness, Ferraris and McLaren supercar tours across southern Germany and northern Italy, including Michelin-starred stopovers. For me, that’s what my business is all about. I do everything I can to make it work. If the clients feel the emotions – laughing, crying, or unbounded joy – they will remember it, and I’ve done my job. 2022 is just a few weeks away. Where do you see the business and travel more generally heading? Indeed, my business has been at a standstill these last two years due to international travel restrictions; 2022 is looking better with several exciting projects already being planned. Asia is not on people’s lists as yet, though there’s a lot of interest in Italy for some reason. I’m seeing clients travel by private jets more and more, especially since the pandemic. And I read recently that the number of ultrahigh net worth individuals, usually those with investable assets of more than $30m, grew by 24% worldwide in 2020, the fastest rate of increase since 2003. So, I believe there will still be a demand for experiences, especially after all the travel restraints the world has endured.

So, what do you have happening for 2022? Andrea Bocelli has performed a summer concert in his hometown of Lajatico in Tuscany for the last few years after the town built an open-air theatre for the Maestro. In association with this much sought after concert, there are some very limited-access events involving private dinners and exclusive entree to the Bocelli farm, vineyards and winery. I’m seeing strong interest in this July’s event. In May, there is an F1 Legends-led Tour where you pilot a supercar from Bologna to Monaco, passing by Como and Saint Moritz. You stay in luxurious hotels, enjoy gourmet restaurants, visit behind the scenes at Ferrari’s F1 factory, and drive Dallara’s privatised circuit, to name just a few of the included unforgettable experiences. The Tour hits Monaco in time for the Grand Prix so that people can add on a VIP all-access race weekend trackside party pass.

I recently organised for some New York clients who wanted to go to the Caribbean and do something unique. We curated a trip that included a private luxury yacht for accommodation and a pair of Triton 1000-2 Submersibles for them to pilot. In constant communication, tandem diving in two submarines is an incredible way to see the reefs and deeper regions of the Tongue of the Ocean (TOTO) in the Bahamas. The sheer joy on their faces was outstanding. You can see the video on my website. We can arrange that type of experience almost anywhere in the world for clients. One of the most exciting new events I’m working on is a high-performance road trip here in Asia. This has never been done before. Touring through the country with all the experiences, luxe accommodation, and the likes included. Given the roads, it may be most suited to SUVs, and we are currently talking to a couple of prestige manufacturers. It’s going to be a fantastic experience, and perhaps one we can do annually.
They want to do more for themselves and with those close to them. And this is even more relevant in the luxury market. In the last weeks, I have had requests for private villa rentals in various countries with large family groups who want to spend more precious time together and explore local experiences. Private yacht charters as well. A group is looking at a remote castle in Scotland with ten luxurious rooms and lots of cool experiences. The feedback I’m getting from my industry partners is similar, and destinations that have been benefitting are Maldives, Dubai, the Caribbean, and some South American countries, such as Costa Rica and Chile. Overall, there is definitely a buzz around in the travel world. People have been tied down too long and are desperate to travel again. By Michael Cullen Photo credit: Timothy White
Finally, what trends are you seeing with travel in this (hopefully) postCovid world? People are thinking more about themselves and their loved ones as we emerge from this pandemic constrained world.

teeped in history, 137 Pillars House Chiang Mai was built as a result of King Chulalongkorn signing the Treaty of Chiang Mai in 1883.
