It was an ordinary day when on 29 June 1959, four US-army trucks with a few dozen soldiers on board rolled through the sleepy fishing village called Pattaya and stopped near the beach. The frolicking GIs, who had rented a few bamboo huts at the southern end of the four-kilometre long bay, were a novelty for the locals, who watched these guys with great curiosity.
For a period of time, an uncontrolled sex industry stained the town‘s image, but with a joint Government & private sector initiative, Pattaya is now an attractive holiday destination that continues to grow. Spanish tennis ace Rafael Nadal has won an ATP Tour title for a record 18 straight seasons (2004-21) and ranked in the Top 10 for a record 849 consecutive weeks (2005-21), including 209 total weeks as World No. 1. Rafael is also an experienced boater and has been passionate about yachting since childhood. Seduced by both the yacht’s design and living space, he joined Sunreef Yachts’ family of owners, taking delivery of a Sunreef 80 Power catamaran in 2020, which he named Great White. Nadal commissioned the catamaran after chartering several Sunreef catamarans and meeting yard founder and president Francis Lapp. Dig out your deck shoes once again and turn to page 52 as we do a deep dive on Sunreef and what makes them so special. Minor Hotels Announces New Property In Qatar Minor Hotels, a Bangkok based hotel owner, operator and investor, currently with a portfolio of 528 hotels and resorts in 55 countries, has announced the signing of an upcoming addition to its portfolio in Qatar. NH Collection Doha Oasis Hotel & Beach Club is slated to open in mid2022 and will be the first NH Collection property globally with a beach club. The hotel is currently in the later stages of development and is located in the Ras Abu Abboud area along Doha’s eastern coast, midway between the city centre and Hamad International Airport. The previous Oasis Hotel, from where the new property takes its name, was in the same location and was Doha’s first ever hotel when it opened in the 1950’s. The fully redeveloped hotel will have a total of 300 guest rooms, across a mix of Superior and Deluxe Rooms and over 50 suites, all with a design blending modern and classical elegance. The suites will include six 156-sq-m Emiri Suites, a 193-sq-m Presidential Suite and an impressive Royal Duplex Suite, offering 332 square metres of luxurious space. The F&B offering will be very strong, with six restaurants and bars, including two specialty restaurants and a rooftop bar. Additional facilities will include both male and female spas and gyms, a large

Our menu exploration started with Tempura Oysters – six Pacific oysters served on the shell atop a fresh, crisp seaweed salad with sesame oil hints with a dipping soy sauce and grated daikon. An oyster lovers delight. We also shared the Sand Fish (Pla Sai), which could also be known as Thai whiting. Crumbed and crispy fried petit fillet of fish topped with shaved coconut accompanied by a spicy remoulade sauce. Remoulade is a mayonnaise-based sauce of French origin and is often featured in Louisiana cuisine, given the French colonial
history and ideal with our crispy fish. Next, we shared the Wagyu Beef Skewer. Four spears of cubed Wagyu beef grilled to our liking and drizzled with a tamarind sauce. Spicy yet slightly sweet overtones, the sauce worked well with the deliciously tender caramelised beef. And all topped with delicate microgreens, adding some salady freshness to each mouthful. From the rice bowl choices, we settled on the Salmon Fillet. A filet of this rich pink fish is sliced thinly, grilled and served upon rice flavoured with sweet

sesame or teriyaki. All accompanied by pan-cooked asparagus and spring onion spears, sliced king mushrooms and carrot crowned with salmon roe as the final indulgence. Our final savoury dish was the Spaghetti Black Ink. Rock lobster, crab meat and prawns with a bean paste, pepper and basil sauce. Luscious squid ink coloured and flavoured pasta topped with a delicious, balanced seafood symphony—a definite shared favourite for your group. All the sampled dishes were presented in an eyeappealing and taste-tempting fashion. Forget any dismissive thoughts of ‘bar food’ because this was sky-high gourmet dining which we enjoyed shared or family-style. Vana Nava Sky’s dessert is limited to three choices, and all are crowdpleasers. We sampled two of the three, starting with the Crème Brûlée. The generously portioned Vana Nava version of this classic French dessert is made with coconut cream with hints of ginger instead of the typical heavy cream. This baked custard with its caramelised crunchy sugar top was a delight. A pistachios tuile round out this plate of pleasure.

Our final dessert was Café Gourmand, a quintant of miniature sweet treats happily sharing a plate. It included a petit sweet olive cake, macaron, coconut covered lemon curd bar, chocolate mousse tartlet and mini crème brûlée. A fitting end to our sky high meal! n 1971 Bernard Arnault took control of his father’s construction firm Ferret-Savinel. Eight years down the line, he changed the company’s name to Férinel Inc. and shifted its focus to real estate. With $15 million of his own money, Arnault, together with Antoine Bernheim, a managing partner of the French bank Lazard Frères and Co., raised the $80 million required to purchase Boussac Saint-Frères, a bankrupt textile company that owned the fashion house of Christian Dior.

When we discuss a brand, I always tell them my real concern is what the brand will be in five or ten years, not the profitability in the next six months. If you take a brand like Louis Vuitton, which is the number one luxury brand in the world, what I am interested in is how we can make it as admired and successful in ten years as it is today. It’s not how much we’re going to make next year.”
That long term business strategy has worked well for him. Bernard Arnault’s net worth has nearly doubled in less than a year. As of July 2021, it reached $195.9 billion. He has become history’s third centibillionaire and is the richest person in the fashion industry. With so many well-known brands, LVMH is consistently in the news. I
t was an ordinary day, when on June 29, 1959 four US-army trucks with a few dozen soldiers on board rolled through the sleepy fishing village called Pattaya and stopped near the beach. The frolicking GIs, who had rented a few bamboo huts at the southern end of the four kilometer long bay, were a novelty for the locals, who watched these guys with great curiosity. That visit foreshadowed Pattaya being named the Rest & Recreation Centre for the American military at the height of the Viet Nam War. Military tourism got into full swing which initiated Pattaya’s tourism boom and changed life in Pattaya forever. The fishermen of those days are no longer in Pattaya, and bamboo houses on stilts don’t exist anymore. But when the Yanks moved out at the end of the war, other tourists came from all parts of the world and Pattaya’s surging growth really began. Pattaya, which means “south west wind” was literally overrun by visitors in the mid-1980s, and soon the town became the biggest and best known seaside resort in South East Asia. Hotels, apartment blocks, restaurants and places of entertainment virtually sprang up out of the sand without any control. For a period of time, an uncontrolled sex industry stained the town‘s image and Pattaya soon became known as “Sin City” In a partnership between the Thai Government and the private sector, several billion baht was invested to upgrade the town‘s infrastructure and to add many more new family friendly attractions. A huge wastewater treatment plant has brought about cleaner sea water, and many newly built streets have improved the traffic situation.

Pattaya is now an attractive family holiday destination. More and more British, Scandinavian, German and Russian visitors (including married couples) come every year during the European winter to this seaside resort. Pre-covid, the resort was also popular with the Chinese and Indian’s. Pattaya definitely offers an abundance of shopping venues. In this regard the resort is second only to Bangkok and can certainly compete with other major cities in Asia.

One of BKK’s favorite’s, Terminal 21, landed in Pattaya a few years ago. The modern multi-story shopping mall is located on a large plaza and themed after airports and international flights. The airport theme starts in the plaza itself where there is a replica of a full size airplane taking off. The theme continues with the entrances which are termed as gates and inside where there are replica luggage trolleys. Each floor is themed after a particular city and each escalator is like an international flight where you depart from one city and arrive at another. Apart from the decor, you also have replicas of prominent tourist attractions in the city or the country for example, an Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. And coming back to the main purpose of the building - it is a shopping mall. So there are many stores selling luxury goods, a supermarket, food court and a cinema. So you can travel around the world, watch movies, do your shopping and have your dinner in the same day without leaving the air-conditioned luxury of the mall.

To complement the modern shopping and entertainment venues, the city has renovated its beach promenade with colourful paving stones, beautiful stone benches, gleaming chrome railings, as well as with many trees and flower beds. This almost Riviera-like walkway is meant to support Pattaya’s ambitions to become the shopping capital, as well as the exhibition and conference centre of the fast growing Eastern Seaboard. Once again life in Pattaya has become attractive and full of new choices. At the southern end of town a winding road leads to the top of a hill, Khao Phra Tamnak, where several small roads have been built to make the hill more accessible. On the western flank of this hill there is the popular Rama IX Memorial Park, which is frequented by joggers and other sports minded people. From a temple on the summit one can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view over what was once the quiet fishing village of Pattaya. From Wat Phra Yai, a temple on another hill nearby, a large Buddha in the sitting position looks down on the hustle and bustle of the
town. On the way there one passes a garden setting full of sculptures, where Kuan Yin, the Goddess of mercy, and the philosopher Lao-tse can be seen. A few of the most popular attractions worth visiting while in Pattaya include the Sanctuary of Truth, which is the largest wooden castle in the world. This great architecture was born from the dreams and intentions of a Thai gentleman, Khun Lek, who wanted his artwork to be a cultural heritage for Thailand and the world by conveying the philosophy and truth of life through wood carving. Built in 1981, it sits on an area of 80 rai, and is surrounded by a seaside city wall. The structure is all hardwood, including red wood, Teng wood, golden teak, Takhian wood and ethnic trees. No metal nails were used in the construction. Another popular attraction is the Ramayana Water Park, which bills itself as the biggest and best waterpark in all of Thailand. The water rides, some totally unique, vary from screams to gentle swings, 2 dedicated kids zones, a record big double wave pool, and an amazing ride in the lazy river with mystical caves, geysers and bubbles. Art in paradise is the first 3D art museum in Thailand with locations in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Pattaya. If you love posting selfies and pictures
to social media, you’ll love this place. They have their own Art in Paradise AR Application. Simply point your device at the paintings in Art in Paradise and the application will automatically add AR effects to your photos and videos. About 3 km’s south of Pattaya you’ll find the beach town of Jomtien with its 6 km straight stretch of sand. Jomtien is much quieter compared to its rowdy neighbour to the north. One of its biggest attractions is the pleasure of a leisurely day on the sandy shore, splashing in the clean and uncluttered sea and enjoying the cheap seafood snacks available from wandering vendors. Jomtien is also home to Ocean Marina, one of just a few world class marina’s in Thailand. Easily accessible by hiring a boat or taking the ferry from Pattaya Bay, is the island of Koh Larn. Sometimes called Coral Island or Koh Lan, the island is located about 7km off the coast of Pattaya Beach and is about 4km long and 2km wide. There are six main beaches and a few smaller beaches to enjoy. All the beaches are white sand with clear azure waters and all have full facilities such as bathrooms and showers. You’ll also find that most beaches have restaurants that serve up delicious fresh catch of the day seafood or just about any other dish you may desire.

There are plenty of places to stay overnight, ranging from budget rooms to luxury accommodations. While room rates are a little higher on the island than in Pattaya or Jomtien, it is well worth the experience of spending at least one night on the island. Some people end up liking Koh Larn so much they decide to stay for extended periods, like months. If you are planning a stay, calling ahead for reservations, especially during peak season, holidays and weekends is recommended. Other island’s you might want to visit include Koh Pai, Koh Huchang, Koh Manwichai or Koh Klungbadan. Even more beautiful beaches can be found along the coastline in Baan Ampur, Bangsarae or Baan Chang. Pattaya has something for everybody, and judging by the development going on, once we move past Covid, this “fishing village” is definitely looking forward to a continued golden future.

panish tennis ace Rafael Nadal has won an ATP Tour title in a record 18 straight seasons (2004-21) and ranked in the Top 10 for a record 849 consecutive weeks (2005-21), including 209 total weeks as World No. 1. Rafael is also an experienced boater and has been passionate about yachting since childhood seizing every opportunity to go to sea with friends and family. The idea to build a customized catamaran has been part of the superstar athlete’s plans for a while. Seduced by both the yacht’s design and living space, he joined Sunreef Yachts’ family of owners, taking delivery of a Sunreef 80 Power catamaran in 2020, which he named Great White. The 5 million dollar yacht accommodates up to 8 guests thanks to her comfortable 4-cabin layout. Her starboard hull houses the owner’s suite, one of the yacht’s guest cabins and the crew quarters. The port hull accommodates two more roomy guest cabins as well as the catamaran’s galley. With generous living space, the master stateroom features a walk-in dressing area, a sofa, a flip-down ceiling TV above the double bed and a private fold-out balcony. Nadal commissioned the catamaran after chartering several Sunreef catamarans and meeting yard founder and president Francis Lapp at the 2018 Cannes Yachting Festival. Lapp, the creative spark and driving force behind Sunreef Yachts, started his shipyard in Gdansk, a city with a long naval construction tradition and a skilled workforce. With the launch of his first 74-foot luxury oceangoing catamaran with a flybridge in 2003, Lapp and Sunreef Yachts started a new era in the history of yachting and sparked a change in the philosophy of multihull design. Today, over 140 Sunreef Yachts, sailing and power, are cruising worldwide with sizes ranging from 50 to 100 feet. The company is now the world leader in the design and construction of large, customized luxury catamarans, exhibiting at the most important yacht shows, including Cannes, Monaco, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Dubai, Qatar and Singapore.

Born in France in 1958, Francis Lapp began his business activity in electric power and construction. After occupying managerial positions in the industry’s major companies, he endeavoured to strike out on his own. An avid rally enthusiast, he visited Poland for the first time to participate in a race held by Warsaw’s Automobile Club. Having discovered Poland’s immense development potential, he established his business there. He soon became a successful manufacturer of electrical equipment for some of the biggest global brands, soon expanding to providing services including the design and installation of electrical, sanitary and air conditioning systems for large industrial facilities. Poland is also where Francis Lapp developed a vivid interest for sailing, having discovered the world of small racing catamarans. This experience encouraged him to buy his first, larger cruising catamaran, which he based in Madagascar. With the purchase of more similar yachts, he opened a travel agency specializing in charters on the Indian Ocean. The company grew quickly as clients demanded more comfortable and larger catamarans. While trying to source such boats, he discovered there were no suitable yachts available on the market. This inspired him to get involved in building large, customized, luxury multihulls. This was the start of Sunreef Yachts.
