EDITOR’S NOTE
The experience of driving a Bentley always has been – and always will be – at the heart of what makes it such an exceptionally desirable automobile. A testament of that fact is in their recently announced sales numbers showing that 2022 was their best sales year ever, and the first time in the company’s history where they sold more than 15,000 of their extraordinary luxury cars. The final tally for the year was 15,174 motorcars sold, a 4% increase over 2021, their previous record setting year.
The continued demand for SUVs ensured Bentayga remained Bentley’s number one model, selling more in its sixth year of sales than ever before, accounting for 42 per cent of total sales and establishing itself as the most successful luxury SUV in the world. It is also the best-selling Bentley model here in Thailand, with Bentley Bangkok offering 3 distinctive models to suit your lifestyle. Put on your driving gloves and turn to page 48 to find out why the Bentley Bentayga is not just a car, it’s an experience, and one that you’ll never forget.
With friends of friends coming to Thailand for the first time, I was asked where they should go and what they should see. Their first stop is Bangkok. I quickly rattled off a list of sites, but in doing a little additional research I realized how much of the city I had not seen and how much would be worth visiting again.
One of the things that makes Bangkok so spectacular is its rich culture and history. The city is home to a many stunning temples and palaces, such as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the Grand Palace, that are a testament to the city’s spiritual and cultural heritage. In addition to its religious sites, Bangkok is also home to many museums that provide insight into the city’s history and traditions.

L et’s Wine , Winter is coming
Pardon the overused GOT reference but very few people dread a long winter more than John Snow and winemakers in cold climate areas.
Winter frost, also known as Nature’s way of telling grapevines to ‘chill out’,” can be a real pain in the bud for vineyards. Not only can it damage or kill the buds that will produce the grapes for the upcoming growing season, but it can also make winemakers want to cry into their glasses of merlot.
The dangers of winter frost to grapevines are many and varied. For
example, a light frost may only damage the buds, leading to a smaller grape yield for that year. But a severe frost can outright kill the buds, leading to a complete loss of the grape crop for that year and potentially a few more years.
Another danger of winter frost is the potential for “frost cracks” (Also known as Gélivures) in which the water and sap in the vines expands and bursts the bark, leaving the vine open to disease and pests. This can be especially damaging to older vines, who are already at the end of their rope and can’t handle any more stress.
Additionally, winter frost can also damage the vine’s root system, making it harder for the vine to absorb water and nutrients. This can lead to weaker, less productive vines in the future. So, not only do you have less grapes to make wine, but the quality of the grapes that survive may be lower as well.
To protect against winter frost, winemakers have a few options. One method is to use wind machines, which mix the warmer air above the vineyard with the colder air at ground level, preventing frost from settling on the buds. Another method is to use smudge
pots, which burn oil to create heat and prevent frost from forming. However, these methods can be costly and may not always be effective. Heaters and Over-vine sprinklers can also be used and although they are very costly, they can save the entire production. When water is sprayed and freeze around green tissues it releases heat and thus protects vines.
Some winemakers also choose to plant grapevines that are more cold-hardy, such as Riesling or Pinot Noir. These grape varieties can handle colder temperatures better than others, and are less likely to be damaged
by winter frost. But even with these precautions, Mother Nature can still be unpredictable and there is no 100% guarantee against frost. For some good examples available in Hua Hin of Riesling and Pinot Noir produced in cold climates where frost is a hazard you can look for the DOMAINE WACHAU Riesling Federspiel Terrassen or the DOMAINE FAIVELEY Chambolle-Musigny.
Despite the dangers of winter frost, winemakers know that it’s all part of the game. After all, making wine is a labor of love and you can’t make great wine without a little bit of risk. And

let’s be real, if it were easy, everyone would be doing it. But the satisfaction of a great vintage and the taste of the wine, makes it all worth it in the end.

das and juices, round out the beverage selection. After all, and by their own admission, Praça is all about refreshing boozy concoctions.
From the cocktail menu, we sampled Rose Tinted Dreams, a delightful melding of Żubrówka Polish vodka, rosella juice, dragon fruit and lime soda. The obliquely named Self-Carrot blends Mediterranean and Asia starting with
Gin Mare, carrot juice, coriander and lime in a glass dusted with Matcha powder. Ruby Sunbird was the favourite -- mixing Plantation dark rum, spiced rum, and Campari with pineapple juice and lime, dressed with toasted coconut. Smooth with a happy, heady punch.
Praça labels itself as a Thai izakaya. A place for friends and groups to gather for drinks and socialising while graz-
ing on tasty bar bites or sharing more group-friendly dishes. Their playful, distinctly Thai dishes are often modern and more refined. The menu is divided into Tapas, From the Fire, Bowls, and Sweets. Our food journey started with four selections from the Tapas selection, and don’t get confused by the Spanish term; these are distinctly Thai, with a twist.
The elegantly presented Esan Tuna is a northern-eastern or Laarb version of tuna tartare with cracked rice for added texture and house-made black rice crackers. Seang Wa Poo is deceptively light fried rice flour balls akin to savoury profiteroles, filled with blue swimmer crab meat delicately spiced with coriander and lemongrass. These delightfully delicious balls sat on a plate of puff rice and were very moreish.
Rounding out our Tapas tasting were Laarb Klui plus Moo Ping Bo Larn. The laarb is in a long slim spring roll shaped like the Thai musical flute - a Klui. The filling is a spicy combination of pork mince shallot, chilli, roasted rice and vegetable and is presented with an Ajard sauce or Thai cucumber relish. The 6-hour slow-cooked pork belly skewers or Moo Ping Bo Larn came with a spicy BBQ sauce and an apple Ajard. A crowd-pleaser on any table.
Our exploration of the menu’s Bowls and From the Fire section was equally enticing. Zee Klong Moo Ob was all about 24-hour fall-off-the-bone slow-roasted pork ribs with a spicy Praça sauce. A Khao Pad Tom Yum or Tom Yum flavoured fried rice served with grilled scallops exhibited all the fragrant heat of the classic soup. Everybody will want to dig their spoon into this tasty rice and seafood dish.
Gaeng Kua Bai Cha Ploo Phoo is a red curry flavoured with betel leaf and kaffir lime topped with deep-fried soft-shell crab, which adds a pleasing seafood crunch. The final savoury dish was Baa Mee Heang Nuea – five spice and 12hour slow-cooked beef served atop rice noodles and accompanied by soft-boiled egg and chilli. A perfect match if needing sustenance after a few cocktails or your favourite tipple. Jasmin or organic brown rice is available to accompany any dishes if desired.
A small selection is available for those needing a sweet fix to finish their time at Praça. These include a Mango Sorbet with dried mango and crumble and the signature Buay Loy – Thai dumplings in a ginger broth.
Our favourites were the Thai Banana Boat with caramelised bananas, coconut ice cream, mini marshmallows, roasted coconut topped with a chocolate leaf, and the Waffle I-tim cha Thai. Picture a waffle made with a croissant-style pastry with all those delicate layers caramelised to buttery perfection, topped with a creamy Thai tea-flavoured ice cream, and dressed with chocolate sauce and peanuts. Yum!
Praça opens daily from 4:00 PM to 12:00AM, with the last food orders at 10:30 PM. Visit www.standardhotels. com for more details, or call +66 32 535 999 for reservations. Follow their social media channels for additional updates, specials and happenings.
Praça could very quickly be your next elegant yet relaxed beachside watering hole and the ideal place for catching up with friends over snacks or tasty sharing plates.

Bentley Achieves RecordBreaking Sales Success
The experience of driving a Bentley always has been – and always will be – at the heart of what makes it such an exceptionally desirable automobile. A testament of that fact is in their recently announced sales numbers showing that 2022 was their best sales year ever, and the first time in the company’s history where they sold more than 15,000 of their extraordinary luxury cars. The final tally for the year was 15,174 mo-
torcars sold, a 4% increase over 2021, their previous record setting year.
This significant achievement was driven by increasing demand for Mulliner personalisation and Bentley’s new hybridised models, introduced under Bentley’s Beyond100 strategic path to full electrification by 2030.
The continued demand for SUVs ensured Bentayga remained Bentley’s number one model, selling more in
its sixth year of sales than ever before, accounting for 42 per cent of total sales and establishing itself as the most successful luxury SUV in the world.
It is also the best-selling Bentley model here in Thailand. Bentley Bangkok offers 3 distinctive models to suit your lifestyle. The Bentayga sets the standard for modern, luxury SUVs, while Bentayga Azure brings ultimate comfort and wellbeing together for a serene drive. Bentayga S adds addi-
tional speed and enhanced driving dynamics with a bold design to match.
The Bentley Bentayga SUV is the epitome of luxury and performance. From the moment you lay eyes on it, the sleek lines and unmistakable Bentley grille demand attention. And as soon as you step inside, the opulence of the cabin takes your breath away.
With every inch of the car’s interior upholstered by hand, the Bentayga
offers a variety of customization options to make it truly your own. The seats are available in a range of leathers, including the highly sought-after Mulliner Driving Specification with diamond-quilted leather.
Bentley’s enthusiasm for fine materials and handcrafted finishes can be clearly seen in Bentayga’s flawless veneers. Sustainably sourced from forests around the world, each piece of wood can be traced right back to the
tree it came from; the beginning of an intricate process that takes around five weeks for every car. Should you desire an even more contemporary twist, you can choose from eye-catching technical finishes, including high-gloss Carbon Fibre, offering a formidable sporty element; or the stunning Dark Tint Diamond Brushed Aluminium, where each diamond is brushed in three directions to give an exceptional, textured 3D effect finish.
But the Bentayga is not just about luxury; it is also a performance powerhouse. Under the hood is a 6.0-liter W12 engine that produces a staggering 600 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. This allows the Bentayga to accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in just 4.0 seconds and reach a top speed of 300 kph.
In addition to its performance and luxury, the Bentley Bentayga is also known for its comfort. The car has a smooth and refined ride, thanks to its air suspension and advanced chassis control systems.
The Bentayga further sets itself apart with its variety of advanced technology and driver assistance features. The Bentley Dynamic Ride system uses a 48-volt active roll control system to reduce body roll and improve handling. Its range of cameras and sensors provides a 360-degree view around the vehicle, making it easier to maneuver in tight spaces.
One of the most impressive features of the Bentayga is its optional night vision system which uses a thermal camera to detect the heat signatures of objects in the road ahead, such as pedestrians or animals. In addition to detecting potential hazards, the night vision system can also improve visibility in a variety of other driving situations. For example, the system can help identify road signs, traffic lights, and other important information that may be difficult to see in low light conditions.
Being an SUV, the Bentayga offers a variety of off-road capabilities, including the Bentley Dynamic Ride system, which allows you to tackle any terrain with ease.
Overall, the Bentley Bentayga SUV is a true masterpiece of luxury and performance. It offers a level of customization and opulence that is unmatched in its class, and its advanced technology and driver assistance features make it a joy to drive. Whether you’re cruising down the highway or tackling rough terrain, the Bentayga will exceed your expectations.
It’s a perfect blend of luxury and performance, it’s an SUV that’s designed for the elite class, and it’s no surprise that it’s one of the most sought-after vehicles in the world. From the moment you lay eyes on it to the moment you step inside, you know that you’re in for a treat. The Bentayga is not only a car, it’s an experience, and one that you’ll never forget.

Rediscovering Bangkok
With friends of friends coming to Thailand for the first time, I was asked where they should go and what they should see. Their first stop is Bangkok. After living in Thailand for almost two decades, I quickly rattled off a list of sites, but in doing a little additional research I realized how much of the city I had not seen and how much would be worth visiting again.
One of the things that makes Bangkok so spectacular is its rich culture and history. The city is home to a number of
stunning temples and palaces, such as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the Grand Palace, that are a testament to the city’s spiritual and cultural heritage. In addition to its religious sites, Bangkok is also home to a number of museums that provide insight into the city’s history and traditions.
The first and foremost museum worth visiting is The Bangkok National Museum, it is the oldest and most prominent museum in Thailand. It is situated within the grounds of the Grand Palace and boasts the most
extensive collection of Thai art and artifacts in the country.
Established in the late 1800s, the museum comprises several buildings, each displaying different types of art. The museum’s permanent exhibitions include the Thai History Gallery, Archaeological and Art History collection, and Decorative Arts and Ethnological Collection. Although the museum’s infrastructure is old, ongoing renovations aim to modernize the facility. The museum also features temporary exhibitions that rotate regularly.
It is a popular destination for large tour groups and visitors can expect to see crowds, particularly in areas such as the Buddhaisawan Chapel, Red House, and Issaret Rachanuson Residence.
Visitors may also observe people sitting on the floor in front of Buddhist statues, either praying or taking a rest. The museum is wheelchair-friendly and offers free English language tours on Wednesdays and Thursdays, providing visitors a deeper understanding of the artifacts on display.
A different, but very interesting museum is the National Museum of the Royal Barges. Located on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River, near the Pinklao bridge, the museum houses 8 Royal Barges, each carved from huge pieces of teak. The boats are crewed by up to 61 oarsman and have up to 17 other crew members. They are used for important ceremonies of state.
Some of the barges have mythical creatures gilded in gold carved on their prows with a cannon below the creature. The Suphannahongse is the
King’s personal barge and is the most important. It is the largest dugout boat in the world and its name means Golden Swan, and a large swan head is carved on the prow.
While at the museum you’ll also find an exhibition on the history of the barges featuring items such as ceremonial uniforms, ancient prow figureheads, sculptures, thrones, oars, and the remains of ancient barges.
For a taste of current local culture, how long has it been since you’ve visited the Chatuchak Weekend Market? Here the question isn’t what’s for sale, it’s what isn’t for sale? With 8,000 stalls, categorized in 30 sections, it is one of the largest open-air markets in the world.
It is also tremendously easy to get to. Taking the BTS (Skytrain), disembark at the Mo Chit Station, take exit 1 and walk straight for around 4 minutes and you will see entrance 3 of the market on the right side. Taking the MRT (Subway), get off at Chatuchak Park Station, exit 1 and turn right and go straight for about four minutes to also reach entrance 3.
Asiatique, on the Chao Phraya is another venue where you can spend countless hours. It’s renowned for its many picturesque restaurants, most with live music, its open-air market, and its 60 metre high Sky Ferris wheel offering unforgettable views of the Bangkok skyline and riverfront. Additional fun activities include the Calypso Cabaret, Muay Thai Live: The Legend Lives, and the Joe Louis Thai Puppet Theatre.
To fully appreciate the beauty of Bangkok, it’s often best viewed from above, and the most pleasurable way to take in the panoramic vistas of the metropolis is by visiting one of the city’s top-rated rooftop restaurants & bars.
Sky Bar, a Bangkok institution, is located on the 63rd floor of the iconic Lebua Hotel. Already famous, it became even more so after it was featured prominently in the Hollywood movie Hangover Part 2. With its 360-degree views of the city, the bar is a popular spot for sunset drinks and romantic dinners. The bar’s signature cocktail, the Hangovertini, is a must-try.
The rooftop at the Banyan Tree Hotel is fully taken over by Vertigo and its accompanying Moon Bar, offering a 360-degree view of Bangkok’s skyline, including the picturesque Lumpini Park. Located on the 61st floor, the view is undoubtedly the main attraction, however the delicious food is just as noteworthy. To fully appreciate the experience, it’s best to visit when the restaurant opens at 6pm to catch the beautiful Bangkok sunset.
Red Sky Bar is located on the 55th floor of the Centara Grand hotel. The Red Sky Bar offers stunning views of the city and the Chao Phraya River. The bar has an industrial chic decor and serves a wide range of drinks and premium Western food using the finest ingredients.
When you are ready to come off the high floors and get a little gritty, Khao San Road is a fun & lively destination. Known for its bars, live music, and shopping, Khao San Road originally served as a hub for rice trading and later earned the nickname “Religious Road” due to the presence of shops catering to monks. In the early 1980s, a small guesthouse opened, and from there the street exploded into one of the busiest travel epicenters in the world. But it’s not just travelers, Khao San is also popular with locals who enjoy the plentiful food options, great music and cheap drinks.
In short, Bangkok is a vibrant, exotic, chaotic and fascinating city. It is ancient and modern. The city is famous for its street food, night markets, and its numerous temples and palaces that reflect its rich culture and history. The streets are always crowded and bustling, the traffic messy, yet the city is full of energy and life. Whether you are looking for luxury shopping, or street food, or simply to experience the local culture, Bangkok is a city that never dissapoints.

2023 Thailand International Boat Show A Showcase Of The Latest In Marine Technology And Luxury Yachts
The 2023 Thailand International Boat Show, held at the Royal Phuket Marina from January 12th to 15th, was a grand and spectacular event. The Royal Phuket Marina, known for its world-class facilities, served as the perfect location for the show on the popular island of Phuket, famous for its picturesque beaches and lively nightlife.
As the sun rose on the first day of the show, the excitement was palpa-
ble. Boats of all shapes and sizes were on display, from sleek and stylish speedboats to luxurious yachts and everything in between. Attendees from all over the world flocked to the event, eager to see the latest and greatest in boating technology and design.
The main attraction of the show was the 42-meter Burgess Superyacht SONG OF SONGS. With an asking price of 20 million Euro’s, SONG OF SONGS welcomes 12 guests in six
suites including the upper deck owner’s suite, which faces aft and overlooks a private terrace. Three double suites and one convertible suite complete her family friendly accommodations. Delivered last year, she was constructed by Heysea Yachts near Hong Kong.
The design features extensive use of glass, floor to ceiling in many of the shared guest spaces, and there are large, glazed bulwark cut-outs on the main deck to deliver infinity views
from within. Inside the main saloon there is a dining room forward separated from the lounge and bar area by a large TV screen.
A large sun deck, the forward part of which is shaded by the hardtop, features open-air dining for 12 guests, with lounge seating to starboard and a fully equipped bar to port. Aft is a versatile area for entertainment, exercise or sun lounging.
There is another lounge on the main deck aft and steps lead down to the air-conditioned beach club cabana with sliding glass doors. From the main deck aft, side decks lead to steps up to the foredeck where there are sun pads and a jacuzzi.
Twin Caterpillar diesel engines give her a lively top speed of 19 knots, a cruising speed of 13 knots and a maximum range of 2,000nm. There is a lower deck tender garage just forward of
the beach club and tenders launch on horizontal davits through shell doors.
The boat show was a success for exhibitors with SEA Yacht Sales selling a Hanse 460 sailing yacht. Voted the European Yacht of the Year in 2021, the hydrodynamic hull manages to combine a narrow waterline that provides high hull speeds and a wide hull above the waterline that provides largest possible amount of interior space.
Other yacht dealers that sold boats during the show included FLS Yachts & Go Boating, each selling one with multiple sales pending.
Off the water, the show featured a variety of other boats, and boat dealers. There were also plenty of exhibits displaying the latest boating accessories and equipment, such as navigation systems, fishing gear, and more.
A few of the non-yachting vendors participating in the Thailand International Boat Show included the InterContinental Phuket Resort, Naka Island, a luxury collection Resort & Spa in Phuket, Sunshine Beach Resort & Residences, Bangkok Spirit, Jim Beam, Chalong Bay Rum, & Roku Gin.
In addition to the boats and exhibits, the show also featured a variety of other activities and entertainment. There were live bands in the town square on Thursday & Saturday, a DJ on Friday and a six-piece jazz band on Sunday afternoon, the last day of the show.
Throughout Thailand, Saturday June 14th was Children’s Day, and the Thailand International Boat Show did not forget them. Saturday saw kids enjoying Long-legged Bozo Clowns, a Puppet Show, a Popcorn Booth, a Cotton Candy booth, and Face painting.
Food and drink vendors were plentiful and included food trucks serving Japanese Food, Roti and drinks. The restaurants Isola, Thai Taste, and Sea Breeze Bar were also exceedingly popular with guests.
Overall, the 2023 Thailand International Boat Show was a momentous success, drawing in thousands of attendees from all over the world. The boats on display were truly a sight to behold, and the event was a fantastic opportunity for the boating industry to showcase its latest and greatest products and innovations. The show was not only a wonderful opportunity for the boating enthusiasts but also for the local economy as many of the attendees were business people who were interested in investing in the boating industry.
As the sun set on the final day of the show, many of the attendees were already making plans to come back next year, as the 2023 Thailand International Boat Show was an event that was truly not to be missed. The boats, the entertainment and the atmosphere made it a memorable experience for all who attended. It was a celebration of all things boating, and more.
