A

wise man once said, “When all’s said and done, all roads lead to the same end. So, it’s not so much which road you take as how you take it.” With that in mind, this month, we bring you what could possibly be the best road trip ever. Bentley Motors is offering a once-in-a-lifetime driving experience that will take you on a breathtakingly scenic route from the home of Bentley Motors in Crew, England, to the Macallan Estate in Speyside, Scotland where they produce one of the finest single malt Scotch’s in the world.

The Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF) is a small Thai registered charity set up in 2005 to help elephants that could not help themselves. GTAEF strongly believes that all elephants should be wild in an ideal world. Unfortunately, this is not the case, so until that point is reached, GTAEF aims to assist captive elephants, improving their lives and welfare while also taking part in conservation and wild elephant programs to ensure the survival of the wild herd. A task it initially achieved by rescuing street begging elephants and their handlers (mahouts) and bringing them to live on the 400-acre forest and grassland surrounding the Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort in Far North Thailand. This sanctuary held up to 40 giants at various times and is currently home to 21 elephants.

The carefully planned driving route covers some of the UK’s most beautiful roads, hidden culinary hotspots and luxury accommodations. You’ll be driving a Bentley through stunning British landscapes, including the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Cairngorms; unforgettable experiences are guaranteed. Dig out your driving gloves and turn to page 32 to experience five unforgettable days, four luxurious nights on one extraordinary Journey. Our “Let’s Go” this month takes us way up to the northern reaches of Thailand, where we stop in and visit the city of Chang Rai. Chiang Rai’s roots go back to 1262, founded by King Mangrai who made it the capital of his Mangrai Dynasty. Along with portions of Myanmar and Laos, this area is known as the Golden Triangle and was the top Heroin producer until Afghanistan took the number one spot in the early 21st century. Wiggle into your walking shoes and turn to page 40 to see what else this city is notable for and why you should plan a visit.

A Conversation With Madame Nadear Sasinun This issue we are pleased to feature Madame Nadear Sasinun. Nadear was born in the southern Thai province of Pattani. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Princess of Naradhiwas University and is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Management and Development and PhD in the same areas of knowledge from Suan Dusit University. A friendly person, she likes to help others. Nadear believes that we should never stop learning and improving ourselves to keep up with the

worldwide trends. Most importantly, she says that we should never forget to love ourselves and take care of our health by exercising regularly. It’s how she stays fit, young, and beautiful. We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Nadear and are pleased to present our conversation here. HM: Since 2020, the world has changed due to Covid. What are your thoughts on learning to live with the virus? NS: Due to the COVID-19 situation, I believe everyone should be more

cautious living their day to day lives. It’s still essential to follow safety measures; wash hands regularly, put on face masks, avoid crowded areas for your and everyone’s safety. When back home, spray alcohol on your hands and feet and shower immediately to prevent the spread of the virus. I also think it’s important to drink 2 to 3 litres of water and to take vitamins to improve your immune system, such as vitamin C, Beta-glucan, vitamin D, vitamin B complex in the proper amount daily.

HM: After getting your Master’s and PhD, what would you’d like to do? NS: In the future, if I have a chance, I’d build a hospital specializing in health and beauty. To put it simply, it would be a wellness centre for Thais and foreigners that would focus on how to live a better life. Stay healthy, stay happy. HM: You’ve recently started a new business producing specialized drinking water. Can you tell us a little more about that? NS: I was inspired to create my own drinking water brand, Daevana, because I’m a health and beauty lover and understand water’s role in both. I studied the innovation of nano oxygen in drinking water. Apart from hydration which makes our skin look healthy, the small molecules are easily assimilated into our circulatory system and charges our metabolism. It’s an innovation of vitamin water that has minerals our body needs. I believe Daevana Nano Vitamin Water is essential for our daily life. HM: Final question, what do you believe are the keys to success, and what would you say to women who want to follow a similar path as yours? NS: Beautiful, Strong, and Healthy would be my keywords of success. I’d encourage modern women to improve, value, and love themselves, as well as work with passion and patience to achieve their ultimate goals. One day you’ll surely be successful. Don’t forget to take care of yourself. Eat well, sleep well, and exercise for your sustainable good health. HM: Thank you, Khun Nadear

Please tell us about yourself? I am Managing Director of Rasa Hospitality Group. A Thailand based private hospitality management company. We have been in operation since 2013 and currently have a portfolio of five properties in Thailand. Additionally, I serve as Senior Vice President of Resorts for Rasa Group and Director of Rasa Group. My hospitality career started in the United States as I was working through my education. I had a vision of being a lawyer. Still, opportunities presented, and I achieved my first Hotel General Manager role at age 30. In 2003, looking to take a break, I planned to take a sabbatical in Hong Kong but found myself in Koh Samui instead. This was the start of my Thailand adventure. The Land of Smiles has been home ever since.

What’s the Rasa Hospitality Story?

A long term player in residential development, Rasa Group, built and currently operates high rise towers in Bangkok, Rasa Tower & Rasa Two. The group also owns Anantara Rasananda on Koh Phangan. We own and operate the Buri Rasa Village Resorts on Koh Samui and Koh Phangan plus Pai Village in northern Thailand’s Mae Hong Son region. In addition to overseeing the above hospitality assets, the hospitality division was the lead conceptual developer and provided complete turnkey third-party management for the luxury Ryokan, Onsen @ Moncham in Chiang Mai’s Mae Rim district. All properties are award-winning both regionally and globally, having taken home numerous World’s Best Travel Awards and other accolades. International guests were a significant part of our market mix pre-pandemic, though, in 2019, we took swift action to switch to a domestic base and are glad we did as we not only survived, we excelled. Like many hospitality organisations, we are working to stay abreast of our daily operations during these ongoing challenges. We are also looking beyond. In fact, the Group has earmarked THB 1 Billion for regional expansion within 2023.

Where do you see opportunities?

Thailand remains a challenging market while protocol for international arrivals and uncertainty remain. However, we are open to acquisitions for the right opportunities or management agreements for interesting boutique properties that fit our Rasa Collection or our Buri Rasa Brand.

With that said, we are pursuing our longstanding passion and love for Vietnam, seeking unique opportunities for hospitality investments in key destinations such as Phu Quoc, Danang, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. With funding available and goals clear, we are beginning our journey toward the future. Along the way, we would also welcome any joint-venture partners whose vision align with ours.

Phu Quoc seems to be tourism flavour of the month. What is the attraction?

Positioned just off the coast of Cambodia, it’s Vietnam’s largest island and the biggest in the Gulf of Thailand. It has a special economic zone status and its own international airport. What that means is easy access onto the island. The government has also provided it with a visa-free status for international arrivals, so visitors do not need to apply for a Vietnam Tourist Visa before travel. They simply receive a visa on arrival, as long as they are not travelling to other parts of the country pre or post-Phu Quoc. Most of Phu Quoc district’s 28 islands are uninhabited, while some are identified for development as private resorts. Phu Quoc Island, where most of the tourism action takes place, spans 574 square kilometres, with around 50 percent of the island as a national park within the Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve. This fosters the conservation of its tropical rainforests featuring waterfalls, coral reefs, wetlands and other parts of the surrounding natural landscape, as part of UNESCO’s MAB (Man and the Biosphere) programme. Add to that the beaches, with Phu Quoc Island home to around 20 unspoilt beaches and the district boasting 150 kilometres of coast with velvety soft sand. We foresee Phu Quoc will be one of South East Asia’s leading island destinations over the next few years.

Rasa Hospitality has weathered the COVID storm. What’s your view of the future?

We live our message of positivity and hope while challenging the status quo. We are starting to see signs of progression out of the darkness, and I believe that will continue. I predict South East Asia, particularly Thailand, will be the strongest rebounding tourism market in the next couple of years. We are working hard to ensure Rasa Group and our partners are positioned to be a vital part of that. By Michael Cullen

Passing idyllic chocolate-box villages and world-famous market towns, you’ll stop for mouthwatering refreshments and breathtaking views at the historic manor house of Fischer’s Baslow Hall before heading north into the “Dark Peak” region. After breakfast, your convoy continues into the North Pennines and the Northumberland National Park. As you head north, you’ll experience rolling hills and picturesque countryside to spellbinding abbeys, awe-inspiring stately homes and castles, and the time-honoured and truly unique Common Ridings. This night’s experience will be exceptional as you arrive at The Treehouses of Lanrick, a hidden gem offering true escapism in a stunning and secluded woodland setting bordering the Trossachs National Park. It’s a setting that allows you to find peace and tranquillity as you stay within the canopies of beautiful trees and the wide variety of birds, red squirrels and other wildlife to which they are home. on luxury and, along with the rest of the evening programme – only continues to highlight how unique an experience it truly is. As night falls, you will gather to meet one of the UK’s most famous chefs who will prepare and serve your very own al fresco dinner with local, seasonal produce. “An Audience With Tony Singh” will include the chef’s tips for more sustainable cooking, but it doesn’t stop there: Scotland is a prime destination for stargazing and, on a clear night, with the right conditions, you may even see the Northern Lights. So, who better to guide you through the experience than Scotland’s Astronomer Royal who will offer her perspective on our place in the universe right here, in the middle of nowhere. Bidding a reluctant farewell to the Treehouses on day 4, you’ll drive northeast towards Great Britain’s largest National Park and your final goal, The Cairngorms. E

ight hundred sixty kilometres north of Bangkok, you’ll find Thailand’s northernmost major city, Chiang Rai. With approximately 560,000 people and growing, this city should certainly land high on your holiday destination list. Chiang Rai’s roots go back to 1262 when it was founded by King Mangrai, who made it the capital of his Mangrai Dynasty. However, Chiang Rai’s future wasn’t always bright as Burma conquered it and it remained under

Burmese rule for several hundred years. In 1786 Chiang Rai became a Chiang Mai vassal. Siam, as the country was known before its name change to Thailand, annexed Chiang Mai in 1899, and Chiang Rai was proclaimed a province of Thailand in 1933. One of the more famous stories about Chiang Rai took place in 1432, during the reign of King Sam Fang Kaen of the Mangrai Dynasty (1402–1441). The Phra Kaeo, or Emerald Buddha, a most

revered Buddha statue, was discovered in Chiang Rai when an earthquake split the chedi at Wat Phra Kaeo. The beautiful jade figure was then seen concealed within. Another telling of the tale has the “Emerald Buddha” hastily covered in mud just before marauders entered to pillage. Many years later, the clunky-looking mud Buddha was found actually to house a magnificent jade statue. Perhaps by way of the earthquake mentioned above—a piece of the clay Buddha broke off—revealing the jade beneath.

As with all cities in Thailand, Temples (Wat’s) play an essential role, and a few should definitely be visited. Wat Rong Khun could be the city’s icon. Designed and built by Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat, the temple stands out from all the others with its exquisite white architecture. Another temple worth visiting is Wat Huai Pla Kang, which was first established as a pastoral residence. In 2005, a monk named Phra Achan Phop ChokThitsawangso arrived at

the temple for Dharma practice. At the time, the temple looked much different than it does today. It’s popularity grew when people started to believe that Phra Achan Phop Chok could foretell the future. Over time, many Thais came to see him and found his fortunetelling to come true. Because of this special ability, he became well-known across the country. Today, the temple’s stupa houses the statue of a carved wood Guan Yin (goddess of compassion) on the first floor. In addition, each floor has a designated Buddha image.

Another well-known monk is Phra Maha Wutthichai Wachira Methi. He is a writer, preacher and social thinker. In 2009 he opened his Rai Chuen Tawan Meditation Centre which has become internationally famous. The meditation centre covers an area of more than 170 rai and sits adjacent to paddy fields on the north, with the Huai Sak Reservoir to the south and east. Ideal for those perfect selfies.

When you think of Thailand, “cold mist” isn’t probably top of mind. For that reason, it’s worth getting up with the chickens to view the sunrise over the Mekong and take in the sea of mist at Doi Pha Tang. It’s a bit of a drive, at 160 kilometres from Chiang Rai’s town centre, but it offers some jaw-dropping scenery. There aren’t many Westerners, or visitors for that matter, who come here. Because of that, this attraction has maintained its pristine natural beauty. It’s quiet and serene throughout the year, plus you get to see some of the best views in all of Thailand. You’ve more than likely heard of the “Golden Triangle.” The name Golden Triangle was actually coined by America’s Central Intelligence Agency and refers to the approximately 950,000 square kilometres that overlap the mountains of the three adjacent countries. It is the area where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet at the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong rivers. Chiang Rai is the Thai part of the triangle, and it is a popular tour.

Most of the world’s heroin came from the Golden Triangle until the early 21st century, when Afghanistan became the world’s largest producer. Opium production in Myanmar was the world’s second-largest source; however, it has been declining year on year since 2015. Route 1 in Bangkok will take you all the way to Chiang Rai. It runs from Bangkok through Chiang Rai to Mae Sai on the Burma border. By car or bus, you are looking at about 14 hours. According to official bus schedules, the bus ride to Chiang Rai from Chiang Mai takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. All of these times should take into account the rainy season, which lasts from about June to late October. The rains can severely inhibit travel, with road sections often completely flooded and even washed out. Several flights are available to and from Bangkok daily. Major operators include Thai Airways, Air Asia, and Nok Air. Mae Fah Luang International Airport flight time is about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

There is a scheduled boat service between Chiang Rai and Thaton in Chiang Mai Province daily. This journey will last about 3–4 hours and is a pleasant alternative to the bus ride through the mountains. Of course, due to Covid, you will want to check with all carriers to confirm their current schedules. While Thailand’s second-largest city, Chiang Mai, gets much more press, journeying a little further north to Chiang Rai is definitely worth the effort, and you will be rewarded accordingly.

The Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation

T

he Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF) is a small Thai registered charity set up in 2005 to help elephants that could not help themselves. GTAEF strongly believes that all elephants would be wild in an ideal world. This is unfortunately not the case, so until that point is reached, GTAEF aims to assist captive elephants, improving their lives and welfare while also taking

64

HOT Magazine

part in conservation and wild elephant programs to ensure the survival of the wild herd. A task it initially achieved by rescuing street begging elephants and their handlers (mahouts) and bringing them to live on the 400-acre forest and grassland surrounding Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort in Far North Thailand. This sanctuary held up to 40 giants at various times

and is currently home to 21 elephants. Since 2005, GTAEF has adapted to changing circumstances and adopted three separate pillars: Improving Captive Elephant Welfare, fostering & championing Wild Elephant Protection, and Research and Education on how to better look after them in captivity and protect them in the wild. Working with the elephants on-site and through well-chosen partners, the

Foundation has been a critical driver in improved welfare for all captive elephants. Pre-COVID initiatives included hosting and supporting well attended free courses, seminars and workshops for elephant camp managers and mahouts. Topics included Target Training Positive Reinforcement, Environmental Enrichment & Human-Elephant Learning Program, and Elephant

Friendly training techniques. Indeed, the Target Training Positive Reinforcement Workshop program is already into its eleventh year and has reached hundreds of managers and mahouts responsible for thousands of elephants across eight countries. Thailand has a 4,000-year tradition of keeping and handling captive elephants. The main home villages of these tradition keepers are Surin’s

Ban Ta Klang region. The Foundation recognises that historical norms and animal handling practices will not modernise without active agreement and input of future mahouts and decision-makers. Thus, a forward-looking project was established to help broaden the horizons of the regions youth and future leaders by providing two fulltime English teachers for the province.

HOT Magazine

65

Not only did this project take one of the local village schools from dead last to top one hundred in the province for average English score. Local students have entered provincial English competitions with good success. Unthinkable a decade ago. Emboldened by such achievements, a virtual pairing program with an art school in California has been established. GTAEF has three ongoing Wild Elephant Conservation projects. The SurvivingTogether project on the outskirts of Thailand’s Khao Yai National Park. This initiative supports Community Conservation Clubs to gently intercept wild elephants when they leave the forest. And through especially learned techniques, push them back before damaging farmers’ crops. Infrastructure such as watchtowers have also been provided to observe the elephants more safely. The second project works with New York University’s Hunter College. It supports their Comparative Cognition for Conservation Laboratory studying elephant behaviour to promote Human-Elephant Co-existence. Another Thai National Park is assisting with this research project. Perhaps GTAEF’s most significant funding initiative is the long-term lease of an 18,000ha wildlife corridor between Botum Sakor & Southern Car-

damom National Parks in Cambodia. A glimpse at the neighbouring concessions within the national parks showed unabated logging and commercial cropping, taking away the wildlife’s natural habitat. This unchallenged degradation of the national parks was sufficient impetus for GTAEF and its partners to secure this natural standing rainforest so it can continue to provide a home to all manner of endangered species. The specifically employed Wildlife Alliance Rangers now help protect this vast wildlife habitat, including an elephant corridor or safe migration route. Additionally, an eco-tourism initiative, Cardamom Tented Camp, now holds a small corner of this conservation site. The low-impact eco-lodge camp with nine basic but comfortable tents provide guests with an all-

encompassing nature experience while actively contributing to the existing natural reserves’ research, protection, and conservation efforts. Opened in November 2017, it sees a percentage of its revenues go directly to Wildlife Alliance and its conservation efforts in the park. Any additional profits are reinvested locally. COVID’s impact on international tourism to Thailand is well documented. This loss of visitors has meant the income to feed Thailand’s 3,800 captive elephants has dried up, leaving many elephants and mahouts to fend for themselves. It has also meant that supporting organisations like GTAEF have lost the source of their traditional funding. Despite this loss, GTAEF has expanded their work to take in and care for three ‘COVID Refugee’ elephants whose supporting camps went bankrupt.

With partners, they also subsidise 13 vets and vet nurses around Thailand to assist the government in providing free, much needed veterinary care to any elephant. Additionally, and inspired by the fact that many elephants have become undernourished, GTAEF now provides supplementary fodder to 33 mother and baby pairs of elephants in the Chiang Mai area. This ensures the baby elephants can continue their physical and mental development. Realising that COVID driven closures would be with us for a while, Foundation Director John Roberts and his team developed ideas to help people locked down worldwide. They expanded their #VirtualFieldtrip program to give free educational elephant experiences in Thai or English. Some tailored to school curriculum when requested.

John and the team continue to provide almost daily live streams for people around the globe via their Facebook (GTAEF Helping Elephants) & Instagram (@GTAEF_Thailand) channels. They have also created weekly Elephant Professional Lectures from experts on many elephant or conservation-related topics and Elephant Educational live-streams from their own veterinary and research teams. Despite the pandemic induced challenges the world has faced these last two years, GTAEF has found ways to continue its work and be true to its aims. Those wanting to learn more about the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation’s work or provide financial support visit can their website www.helpingelephants.org or their social media channels listed above. The villas come with dedicated villa managers and staff, regular maintenance, 24-hour security and the use of the common areas including a beach bar. Optional services include private chefs, nannies, personal assistants, drivers and business support. The estate has its own dedicated general manager, John Dopéré, and his team is on hand 24/7 to attend to villa owners and rental guests. “There is a significant shortage of superior-quality residences for sale on the island of Koh Samui,” says Dopéré. “With our exquisite hillside villas commanding some of the best views on Samui, we have a unique offering in terms of both sales and rentals.
