fter playing host to the True Jazz Festival in 2017, & the Glamping Festival in 2020, True Arena Hua Hin was once again the location for memorable music.

On Saturday May 7th, the International Jazz & Blues Festival 2022 @ Hua Hin took place to a large ecstatic crowd. Headlining for the evening was Kenneth Bruce Gorelick, known professionally as Kenny G, the American smooth jazz saxophonist, composer, and producer. At the age of 17, Kenny got his start professionally playing for Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra, the year was 1973. Kenny has gone on to become one of the best-selling artists of all time with global sales totaling more than 75 million records.

All teams race the same type of boat, a highperformance, fully-foiling, F50 catamaran. The boats are based on several of the AC50 cats that took part in the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda but have been updated and equalized at Core Boatbuilders in New Zealand. The movie Field of Dreams is a modern classic 1989 American sports fantasy drama. The film stars Kevin Costner as a farmer who builds a baseball field in his cornfield that attracts the ghosts of baseball legends, including Shoeless Joe Jackson and the Chicago Black Sox. The movie is known by its iconic line, “If you build it, they will come.” It is that line that rattles in the back of my mind when I think of the successful Hua Hin pool villa development Baan Phu Thara. The winning team behind Baan Phu Thara is Grahame and Scott Beacham who handle the sales and Eakkarat Suppagarn. Eakkarat has 24 years of experience as a construction engineer and has built 100’s of homes in Hua Hin under his Smart House banner.

The event kicked off with the band Mello Motif opening the festival, followed by Melodic Corner, Yamin & the SOS, DRAGONFLY and then the headliner Kenny G. Lawrence “Larry” Ellison is chairman, chief technology officer, and co-founder of software giant Oracle. He gave up the Oracle CEO role in 2014 after 37 years at the helm, which earned him a fortune a little north of 100 billion dollars. Larry is an avid sailor and a backer of the Oracle Team USA, a yacht racing syndicate formed to compete in the America’s Cup. Larry’s latest sailboat venture, SailGP, is designed to go head-to-head against the America’s Cup. SailGP is the brainchild of Larry and prominent New Zealand yachtsman Sir Russell Coutts, a multiple world champion, Olympic gold medalist and five-times America’s Cup winner.

Grahame, Scott & Eakkarat teamed up to build their first project Baan Phu Thara. A development of 42 luxury pool villas located in the Black Mountain area. Those 42 homes have sold, and they are now selling and building phase 2. They have also recently launched a new development called Smart Hamlet. Frescobaldi Wine Dinner At Azure, InterContinental Hua Hin Resort Azure Restaurant, the popular beachside eatery at the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort, played host to an exceptional wine dinner on the evening of Friday May 6th, featuring a tantalizing Italian 5-course meal. The menu was a joint effort by guest chef and Milan native Simone Bianchi and the InterContinental Hua Hin’s very own

Executive Sous Chef, Jakov Orsulic. Each course was expertly paired by a different Frescobaldi wine, presented by the wine’s distributor, BB&B. The Frescobaldi family has been producing wine in Tuscany for over seven hundred years, beginning in the early 1300’s. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Florentine Wine house furnished

wine to the Court of England and to the Papal Court in Rome, amongst others. Fast forward to the 21st Century and the evening started with an hour-long welcome reception to prime everyone’s pallet for what was to come. CAMPARIN MASTERCLASS Bartenders and those working behind the bars in Thailand met at The Okura Prestige Bangkok Hotel earlier this month for the rare treat to meet Tommaso Cecca. Ceccais is the veteran bartender manning the operation of the legendary Camparino in Galleria, an 107-year-old historic bar in the heart of Milan and birthplace of the muchloved Italian aperitivo culture, Tommaso, a 38-year-old from Bari, started working in Puglia when he was very young. After an experience in London that allowed him to enrich his professional experience, he returned to Italy and became bar manager at Cafè Trussardi in Milan for more than 13 years. Today, for over three years,

he has been the soul of Camparino in Galleria. According to Tommaso, for an institution that last year alone had 90 million engagements across all social media platforms and an average of 1,500 customers frequenting daily, Camparino in Galleria is an ancient bar that builds its long-standing success and global reputation on human touch, uncompromising quality and dedicated, knowledgeable staff. “People go to bars or restaurants not to just have the foods or drinks that are served there,” said Tommaso, who leads a compact yet attentive and fiercely talented team. “The customers

want more than that, and they’re now very educated. What we are dedicated to offer are, of course, the good products and the experiences catered by our team. Our staff is trained to have intuition to service each customer properly and be able read their thoughts and sometimes decide for them. Teamwork and creativity are crucial in the process of creating new products, but the customers are the heart of our operation. Whatever old things we keep and whatever new things we add, it all revolves around our customers.” Camparino, in Tommaso’s comparison, is very much similar to Campari in terms of its universal relevancy and the uniqueness that stands the test of

While the bar’s iconic features are well preserved and honored, contemporary touches need to be added to include younger clientele, not just from Italy and Europe but from all over the world. “Previously, most our customers were people in their 60s, but now they also include a much younger crowd. Obviously, we can’t choose who a bar as historic as Camparino would appeal to, but we can try a few things,” the head bartender said. “We changed the background music, and launched more visually appealing cocktails, using red and bright colors more than just brown like it has always been. And it worked. We manage to keep the balance while we move forward. Think Negroni. It’s a

classic that never goes out of style, but it also evolves and becomes even more popular than ever.” Looking forward, Tommaso revealed that the brand is looking to expand Camparino’s legacy to other parts of the world, potentially Asia. “It would be ideal to offer something unique and typical Italian in a new city. We’re truly Italian in essence, but we’re also very international. Our team consists of talents from all over Europe and beyond, a very refreshing culturally diverse workplace. Also being ranked no.27 in the most recent World’s 50 Best Bars list means we have much more work to do, and more customers to reach.” The event, which was one part of the Asian tour where only Bangkok

Mister National Universe 2022 Press Conference On 26 May in Bangkok, a press conference was held at Shama Lakeview Asoke to announce the upcoming 4th edition of Mister National Universe. MNU 2022 will see Twenty-six men come to Thailand, each proudly representing their country, to compete for the title, trophy, and sash. Joining the contestants will be country managers, international media & Thai media.

In attendance was honorary chairwoman, Khun Sumanee Guna Kasem along with pageant founder Khun Tanya Siri Vijitsomphong, the editor and creative director of this magazine. It is as if it exudes a sense of fun. I chose to experience the Good Vibrations treatment using specific therapeutic grade Tibetan singing bowls for an hour-long vibrational sound bowl session. My therapist had completed many hours under a master practitioner’s tuition and had me lying comfortably surrounded by the varying sized bowls. It is so good!” Having access to produce from the resort’s expansive organic farm helps with Chef’s desire for sustainability. His biggest love, though, is his barbecue grills (Asado), where a lot of his cooking happens, from infusing smoke into individual elements to slow or high-temperature cooking of sides and main dish ingredients.

Our Nómada food journey started with sampling Chef Andre’s Small Plates. Crispy Cones – three cone-shaped fried spring roll wrappers, each filled with a tartare of seafood: salmon with soy and sesame oil, shrimp with house-made mayonnaise and crispy quinoa, crab with avocado brunoise. Petit is size, bursting with fresh flavours and served in a custom stone cone holder. Tiradito of Fish and Shrimp – sashimi-style sliced raw fresh local Sea Bass and just seared prawns on a Chilean yellow chilli sauce with chives and Pebre. A gently spiced Chilean salsa akin to an Argentinian chimichurri. Scallops – in their shell, topped with Parmesan, yellow pepper and leek sauces, crispy quinoa and then cooked atop the grill, taking on a lightly smoky, almost bacon-like tones. Delicious delight on a shell. Our final Small Plate was Beef Tartare. House-smoked shredded raw beef fillet seasoned with local spices and topped with a soy-cured egg, avocado mousse, milk emulsion, plump capers, and accompanied with generous fried bread fingers to spread your tartare across. An enjoyable take on a classic and, like most of Chef’s Small Plate, great for sharing. Nómada’s menu has the main dishes listed under the heading of Wood & Fire and invites diners to “discover the fragrant aromas and sumptuous flavours of perfect-forsharing meat and seafood signatures cooked over fire with South American flair”. Dishes are served elegantly though simply, with the hero item, requisite sauces and simple adornments. Vegetables and other sides are ordered separately with choices like Corn Tamale, Grilled Vegetables, Baby Carrots with Walnuts, two Potato dishes and Garden Salad - all in generous portions.

We sampled four dishes starting with Octopus. Wine marinated tentacles flavoured with paprika, then slow-grilled and served with black olive tapenade, and dressed with fresh coriander and pickled onion. The smoothly blended tapenade with the olives’ salty, slightly bitter notes and perhaps a bite of capers, anchovy and garlic was a supreme marriage with the meaty yet tender Octopus. Mediterranean delight on a plate.

Roasted Chili Sauce “nam jim jaew.” And all had a place like with - Chicken – a boned out halfchicken, marinated for 24 hours with Peruvian-style chilli paste and local spices, then barbecued. Juicy, soft, succulent, smoky and tender with gloriously caramelised crispy skin. Or the final main, the famous South American Pichanha (beef rump cap) slow grilled and served sliced. Beautifully tender, juicy, and so moreish.

Keeping with the seafood theme – Whole Fish – specifically a platesized whole snapper. Barbecue grilled, served on a banana leaf with Chef’s smoky, sweet and spicy yellow chilli sauce and a grilled half lemon which generously released its juices when squeezed over the fish. There is something special about barbecued food, and this crispy-skinned, though still moist fall-off-the-bone snapper was no exception.

Nómada’s dessert selection offers three choices, and sweet lovers, that’s all you need. Starting with Pineapple - local pineapple grilled for the smoke rather than cooking with a dark toffee sauce, crumble and house-made coconut ice cream. Cheesecake – a small dome of creamy passionfruit and papaya mouse cheesecake atop a tin biscuit disc and enhanced further with drops of papaya gel. Finally, Cocoa – decedent molten chocolate lava pudding, vanilla ice cream with touches of berry sauce and fresh seasonal fruits. All equal favourites, or so adjudged by our team.

On Saturday May 7th, the International Jazz & Blues Festival 2022 @ Hua Hin took place to an ecstatic crowd. Headlining for the evening was Kenneth Bruce Gorelick, known professionally as Kenny G, the American smooth jazz

saxophonist, composer, and producer. Kenny G is one of the best-selling artists of all time, with global sales totaling more than 75 million records. The event kicked off with the band Mello Motif opening the festival, followed by Melodic Corner, Yamin & the SOS, DRAGONFLY and then the headliner Kenny G. Kenny G got his start professionally in 1973 playing for Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra. At the time he

was 17. In 1982, after inking a deal with Arista Records, Kenny G released his self-titled debut album. Striking a balance between jazz and R&B, the record marked a solid start to his solo career. His next two albums, G Force (1983) and Gravity (1985), continued his upward trajectory, but it was his fourth studio album, Duotones (1986), that made the saxophonist an international star. Eventually topping 5 million sales, the silky-smooth jazz album led

the way for Kenny G to work with other big-name stars, including Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Natalie Cole. Even though the weather looked doubtful, with heavy rain leading up to the start of the event, the festival drew a large crowd that thoroughly enjoyed the lineup with dry skies above. SailGP takes on The America’s Cup

Larry is also an avid sailor and a backer of the Oracle Team USA, a yacht racing syndicate formed to compete in

Larry’s latest sailboat venture, SailGP is designed to rival the America’s Cup. SailGP is the brainchild of Larry and prominent New Zealand yachtsman Sir Russell Coutts, a multiple world champion, Olympic gold medalist and five-times America’s Cup winner.

This means the racecourse is always changing, sometimes even multiple times at the same event if the conditions dictate.

SailGP events take place all over the world in multiple iconic venues and in

This may at times appear confusing, but the fundamentals of a SailGP racecourse remain the same regardless of the actual course layout. All teams race the same type of boat,

a high-performance, fully-foiling, F50 catamaran. The boats are based on several of the AC50 cats that took part in the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda, but have been updated and equalised at Core Boatbuilders in New Zealand. The specs for the F50 are a height of 24 metres (78 feet 9 inches), a length of 15 metres (49 feet 3 inches), a width of 8.8 metres (28 feet 11 inches) and they

weigh 2800 kilograms with speeds topping 53 knots (61 miles per hour). The teams race with five sailors on board with the option to swap out one sailor during a race day. Crew roles are Helmsman, responsible for steering, boat speed, and boat on boat decisions. The Wing Trimmer controls the setup of the wing sail for maximum speed. The Flight Controller

is responsible for the flight of the boat, and the two Grinders who provide the power for sail trim purposes. Racing is intended to be on windward (upwind) and leeward (downwind) courses, with the final course to be sailed designated by the race committee no later than five minutes before the starting signal.

One of the most intense parts of a SailGP race is right at the start, as the first leg takes the boats on one of the fastest points in sailing, a reach, to the first mark, or the speed mark. From there, the boats begin heading to the leeward gate at the bottom of the course, and once a boat has passed through it starts heading upwind to the windward gate at the top of the course. The boats repeat the journey until the designated number of laps have been completed, before heading to the finish line. There is no standing start in SailGP, all races begin with the entire fleet moving. Various signals are communicated to the boats during the starting procedure, with the entire fleet required to be inside the starting area at a set time. The fleet will then start moving towards the start line as the clock counts down to the starting signal. Boats may cross the start line any time after the starting signal has been sounded to begin the reach for the first mark. If a boat has crossed the start line before the starting signal, it is declared OCS (on course side) and penalised.

Six teams competed in the 2019 inaugural season of SailGP, Australia, China, France, Great Britain, Japan & the United States. The racing calendar ran from February to September, visiting Sydney, San Francisco, New York, Cowes & Marseille. Points were awarded per race, with 10 points for the winner, 9 points for second place, 8 points for third, and so on. Each event hosted multiple races, with the two highest-scoring teams after each round facing off one-on-one. The winner of that final race won the event. The two highest-scoring teams at the end of the season competed in Marseille with the winning team awarded the championship. Australia took command of the season, winning in Sydney, San Francisco, Cowes & Marseille, and coming in second in New York. Japan came in second, overall.

In Season 2, SailGP saw big increases in viewers, attendees, online followers and athletes. On the water, the league grew from 6 to 8 teams and held 8 events, up from 5 in Season 1. SailGP also continued its push for greater diversity in global sport with 15 female athletes involved in competitive racing in Season 2, thanks to the Women’s Pathway Program, a new initiative for the season. Fans clearly liked what they saw on the water, with broadcast and digital audiences experiencing exceptional growth. SailGP’s total broadcast audience saw an increase of 220% to 823.4 million viewers, with the dedicated broadcast audience of 39.2 million representing a 131% increase on Season 1. Over 700 broadcast hours were enjoyed per event in over 186 territories, as the league was seen by more fans than ever before around the world. At the same time, media coverage of the league greatly increased, with 23,943 press articles written about SailGP, an increase of 246% from Season 1.

On-site, 144,522 fans attended a SailGP event, an achievement made all the more extraordinary given it was a season heavily disrupted and restricted in terms of in-person attendance by COVID. SailGP was once again supported by the Oracle Cloud and stream analytics system, which processed and delivered 30,000 data points every second from each F50 catamaran competing in a SailGP race. Oracle delivered about 80 billion data points to the cloud during Season 2. SailGP’s rapid global expansion continued with the addition of Singapore to its Season 3 calendar, as the iconic city-state plays host to Asia’s first Sail Grand Prix on January 14-15, 2023. In the first event of a three-year deal, the ten teams competing in Season 3 – including new franchises Canada and Switzerland and returning nations Australia, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and the United States – will race at

Parkland Green in the picturesque East Coast Park in the eighth event on the calendar. The Singapore event will join the nine countries that have already been announced for Season 3. Race 1 of Season 3 kicked off in Bermuda on 1415 May. Two-time SailGP Champions Australia got their title defence off to the perfect start at the opening event, picking up maximum points. An excellent Race Day 2 showing by Tom Slingsby’s side secured them a place in the three-team winner-takes-all Final, in which Great Britain and Canada were defeated, moving the Aussies to a top of the Season Championship with an excellent 10 points to kick off their campaign. Next up, the ten-nation fleet will head to Chicago, Plymouth, Copenhagen, Saint-Tropez, Cádiz and Dubai, ahead of Singapore, making it the biggest SailGP season to date.

After Singapore, the league will head to Christchurch, New Zealand and will conclude with the Season 3 Grand Final taking place at San Francisco Bay in May 2023. One further event is expected to be announced to complete SailGP Season 3. According to SailGP CEO Sir Russell Coutts, “From our inception, we have made it clear that our ambition is to be a truly global championship, with some of the world’s most iconic waterfront cities as our backdrop. With the confirmation of our first Asian Grand Prix, the addition of Singapore to the line-up and Season 3 now spanning four continents, our vision is becoming a reality.” One of the casualties from the new teams joining the league is Nathan Outteridge’s Japan team. Runner-up in both Season 1 and 2, Outteridge finds himself without a boat for the start of the season with only nine boats available, due to a series of external factors that has meant the tenth boat cannot be completed in time. In order for Canada to enter the league, the Japan SailGP Team will sit out the first events of the season. SailGP is working hard to get

boat 10 completed and it is expected to be ready to race from the fourth event in Copenhagen allowing for shipping, structural testing and sea trials. The difficult decision – after much deliberation – was made based on logistical and commercial considerations. New teams will have to get to grips quickly with the high-speed, hydrofoiling F50s. True to its ethos of innovation, all F50s have been fitted with upgrades for Season 3 – designed to increase speed and stability around the racecourse, which will likely see the F50 beat its current top racing speed of 98.3 kph.
