utch Yacht builder Oceanco has been in the news a lot lately, ever since the world’s richest man, Jeff Bezos, chose the company to build his mind-blowing 127 metere (417 feet) Superyacht. A yacht so big, it requires a second support yacht, with a helipad, also made by Oceanco. The estimated cost of Bezo’s beauty, not including support yacht, is $500 million. One of the reasons Bezos decided to go with Oceanco was probably their experience in building Superyachts with remarkable security systems, utilizing technology straight out of the pages of futuristic spy thrillers. Dig out your yachting cap and turn to page 36 to see the extras that Jeffery most likely ticked on the Oceanco order form. A former vaudeville acrobat and a former plumber walk into a café,… It sounds like a set-up to a joke, but, it’s actually an incredible success story. The two really did walk into a café, Severt Thurston & Frank Dupar, in 1930, in the small American city of Yakima. From that chance encounter, they went on to form a partnership that innovated an industry, and left a mark on this planet with 226 hotels and over 83,000 rooms around the world. Pick up your passport and to page 58 to read about all the firsts these two dreamt up.

When he talks about freedom, he may not rival Mel Gibson’s rousing speech as William Wallace in Braveheart, but he’s still pretty convincing. Simpson believes freedom is ultimately what yachting is about, leading to the company’s tagline, ‘Yachting Freedom Since 1984’. “That word is in the Simpson Marine tagline for a reason. It captures the whole idea of sailing, enjoying the sea breeze and the oceans. It’s all about freedom, this sense of escape. That to me is the greatest enjoyment of boating, getting away from all the pressure of work, of city life,” says the Managing Director of Asia’s largest yacht dealership, employing over 100 staff with 12 offices in 7 countries & territories. With your yachting cap still on, flip to page 72 to read more about the sailor and his new Beneteau Oceanis 46.1, aptly named Freedom. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue. We hope you enjoy the read.

When Mike Simpson retired from the British Army in the 1970s, he started traveling. He was in Taiwan when he built a yacht to sail around the world. He reached Singapore on his first attempt and Hong Kong on his second, each time, somebody took a liking to his boat and made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. On the third attempt, Simpson ended up selling his yacht in Singapore again and received an order for another. “The penny finally dropped, and I realised I had stumbled on a business opportunity,” Mike recounted. Shortly after that, he founded Simpson Marine.

informed choices in quality real estate this year based on the shortlist of nominees as determined by an independent panel of experts led by JLL Thailand chairperson Suphin Mechuchep. L et’s Meet, Costa Savva What is your full name and age? Costa Savva, 36 What is your current Job Position? Managing director | Founder - Lazudi What do you like most about your profession? It’s the axis of many of my favourite professional areas, Real Estate, sales, Tech & Marketing. I’ve always had a side interest in architecture, studying product & furniture design in University, Art & media prior to that. Professionally I’ve bounced between sales and marketing. Starting my own business allowed me to initially work across all these areas, but now have the ability to bring in smarter people than me to handle these areas, and help the business to continue to grow. Switching from mostly a career in b2b to b2c, one of the most interesting parts, is the people you meet, which wasn’t what I was expecting. Over the last few years, the business and individuals I’ve had the pleasure to work with has been a very interesting factor in what I do. Lastly on this point, it’s also about building something and growing it, from one man band to multi region footprint within a year during the challenges of Covid has been a very interesting journey. What we can achieve post covid will be even more interesting.

I’m not one for getting complacent with a single location, for special occasions I try to arrange the newest hot restaurant in town to try. I like to explore and reach as many as I can. Where I am a regular is our local som tam shop and a couple of Italian restaurants around Thong lor for a more casual homely experience or to celebrate a small win. What do you like to do in your free time, and why? My side passion is motoring, motorsports, I do like to arrange the occasional road trip. Visiting local motorsports, still not to old yet to go karting when I can. But recently taken up golf lessons, which I’m really enjoying and hopefully spend some more time on. Otherwise I’m a very homely person, because of what I do I don’t spend to much time at home but do enjoy the chances I get. Where do you recommend first time visitors to Bangkok go, and why? There’s definitely the well tread path of Yaowarat road, grand palace, temples that must be seen to be appreciated. Followed by sundowners at one of the many rooftops, one of the top restaurants and depending on logistics and locations of everyone, a very local cocktail bar somewhere that only locals will go to.

How long have you lived in Bangkok, and where did you live prior?

On a night out with friends, where do you like to go, and why?

9 years, London Prior.

Thong lor is my go to spot, but in the recent years this has changed, I’m not one for many nights out anymore. Opting for more of a casual dinning / bar experience.

What do you like most about Bangkok? I’ve always gravitated to big cities. Its where I feel most comfortable, the convenience factor is the main driver plus that’s where the largest business opportunities can be found for myself. If you want to enjoy a beach, it’s only a short flight and travel to other countries. The range of options available make it very comfortable place to be based. What is your favorite restaurant, and why? Right now foodpanada & grab food. As eating out is limited, however I’m not a fussy eater. Enjoying very simple traditional thai food to the recent explosion of Michelin in the Kingdom. If I had to narrow it down, I do have a soft spot for trying every burger option in Bangkok.

26

What is your favorite “Special Occasion” restaurant, and why?

HOT Magazine

Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? I would say it’s the level of spice I can handle, it shocks many people that I can eat spicer then most of my expat and thai friends are comfortable with. Maybe that was because of my up bringing in London where we regularly enjoyed very spicy Indian food. But much prefer Thai! What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done? Starting a real estate business during the toughest market conditions. Many people thought I was crazy, but I saw it as a market opportunity.

L et’s Eat,

Jaras, InterContinental Hua Hin Resort

H

ua Hin has a new chic and sophisticated beachside restaurant in a stylish setting, pairing contemporary Thai cuisine with traditional service and promising a unique fine dining experience. We are talking about Jaras Hua Hin at the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort. Newly opened in April 2021, the Jaras vision was initially conceived and tested at the InterContinental Phuket Resort and has now been introduced

30

HOT Magazine

to Hua Hin. In fact, Jaras Phuket’s Restaurant Manager, Khun Pla, made a move to Hua Hin to ensure a successful opening and ongoing implementation. Jaras is about creatively reimagined and prepared Thai dishes using the freshest local and regional ingredients. Menus take inspiration from Thai culinary traditions and emphasise organic garden produce, fresh-caught seafood, along with free-range and hormone-

free poultry and pork. An intimate restaurant, Jaras has alfresco covered dining overlooking the beach and resort pool with the sea breeze for cooling. Excellent for tropical evening dining. The indoor air-conditioned dining room walls are resplendently decorated with handpainted murals depicting Thai rural scenes in hues of dusky pinks and palm greens.

Our Jaras food experience starts with a complimentary, perfectly balanced and refreshing welcome drink of cucumber, lime, elderflower and Thai basil. Chef Pantit Jindajitawat, who goes by the nickname “Et,” also served a complimentary amuse-bouche – typically a bite-sized hors d’œuvre. For our visit, it was a marinated and grilled beef skewer, served over coals for effect, and accompanied by crispy rice cracker artistically topped with drops

of seafood emulsion. This dish gave us an introduction to Chef Et’s modern and artistic plating and food presentation style. First, for starters, is Yum Som O Goong Yang or grilled tiger prawn nestled back together in an intimate embrace and topped with a refreshing warm salad of pomelo, roasted coconut, kaffir lime leaves, and crushed cashew nuts. Next, Phla Hoi Shell or

seared scallops in a piquant sauce of lemongrass, crispy shallot, chilli paste, mint, kaffir lime, and topped with a scallop shell. The final starter was Tom Kha Pla Sine. Imaginatively presented with a rosette of sandfish fillets, topped with the aromatic galangal and coconut milk soup with lemongrass, galangal, coriander and chilli oil.

Our main dishes showcase Jaras Hua Hin’s commitment to purposely selected quality produce suppliers. First was Sturgeon fish from Hua Hin and Thailand’s only producer of Black Caviar. A Thai- Russian enterprise already five years in operation and supplying export-grade black caviar internationally plus to Thailand based consumers, hotels and restaurants. While female Sturgeon are essential for caviar production, male fish are sold for consumption in restaurants. Chef cooked our filet of Sturgeon sous vide (slow-cooked in a water bath) and presented it with a tamarind glaze, coconut oil, herbs, and a sampling of the highly appealing and extravagant black caviar. The chicken used in the Gaeng Kaew Waan Gai comes from Khao Yai based specialist poultry producer Klong Phai Farm. Their chickens are free-range and certified hormone, and antibioticfree. The fresh herbs for the homemade green curry paste come from Hua Hin found organic Palisa Farm, as does the eggplant in the sauce.

Hor Mok Khun Ya is our final main dish, with the recipe coming from the matriarch of the Liptapanlop family, Khun Ya Jaraspim Liptapanlop. The Liptapanlop family’s Proud Group own the Phuket and Hua Hin InterContinental properties. Khun Ya Jaraspim’s recipe has the steamed fish with homemade red curry kept chunkier rather than the fine mousse of a typical Hor Mok Pla, giving the dish a more substantive feel. As is the tradition, it is served on banana leaf topped with rich coconut cream and julienned chilli. A fitting end to our savoury Thai food journey. Two desserts finish our dining experience. The first is Ka Nom Mor Gaeng or taro custard cake, taro purée, crispy shallot and coconut gel which the restaurant sources directly from famous Hua Hin local, Mae Gabe. Our final dessert, Ka Nom Baa Bin Goong, is mini coconut pancakes presented in a small coconut shell garnished with sweet and salted shrimps, coconut cracker, and an espuma-created foam of coconut milk. There is also Thailand’s famous dessert, Mango Sticky Rice.

His total net worth stands just shy of $200 billion, according to Bloomberg. Amazon (AMZN) stock, the primary source of Bezos’ fortune, rose a stag-

gering 75% last year as the pandemic upended consumer behavior in the company’s favor — and Wall Street, flush with easy cash thanks to the Federal Reserve, piled into tech stocks. Bezos likely put his boat order in well before the pandemic. Still, news of his extravagant new toy is putting a spotlight on yet another industry benefiting from the stock market boom and the pandemic’s disruption of social interaction.

Recent orders for superyachts have been record-breaking, one analyst told Bloomberg. Makers of extravagant yachts can barely keep up. “It’s impossible to get a slot in a new-build yard,” the analyst said. “They’re totally booked.” One of the reasons Bezos decided to go with Oceanco was probably their experience in building Superyachts with remarkable security systems, utilizing technology straight out of the

pages of futuristic spy thrillers. Just a few of the extra’s that Jeffery most likely ticked on the Oceanco order form include;

CITADEL ROOMS In the extremely rare case that an unwanted visitor boards their yacht, some owners like the reassurance of a secure location to go to. These places are known as ‘citadels .’ They were first put to use in commercial shipping before crossing over to yachting.

Citadels are kitted out with independent, overriding access to the yacht’s navigational and satellite communications systems, so even when you don’t have access to the bridge, you can maintain full control. The rooms themselves are fitted with reinforced doors and have ballistic protection on the surrounding walls. Inside, they are equipped with their own ventilation systems as well as water and food supplies to provide total self-sufficiency.

EMERGENCY ESCAPE ‘LIFEPODS’ FOR A RAPID GETAWAY Crossing a lifeboat with a space ship, these emergency escape ‘LifePods’ provide a rapid getaway. The watertight pods are constructed from high-tech materials to resist impact and feature built-in GPS trackers, temperature and fire barrier controls, and air purification systems.

ANTI-DRONE SYSTEMS In recent years, drones have been making headlines for their interference with commercial airports, and the military has been particularly keen to curb their capability to spy on top-secret locations. As well as being a handy tool for the paparazzi to get up-close shots of a superyacht’s private enclaves and the guests within them, those involved in the murky waters of industrial espionage can thank drones for significantly increasing their capabilities, too. But a new generation of devices to detect and defeat these drones is emerging to neutralize the occasional threats to privacy and security on yachts. One such defense system identifies any commercial drones in operation within a 20-kilometer radius, providing GPS positions of both the drone and the pilot and an indication of said drone’s heading and speed.

Acoustic Deterrent 38

HOT Magazine

Once the drone threat has been confirmed, the system engages a 500-meter-plus electronic ‘exclusion zone’ around the yacht (not unlike the force fields we are used to seeing in scifi films) that blocks any unwanted airborne visitors. If the drone makes it to the perimeter of the exclusion zone, its controls and video feed are jammed, effectively rendering the pilot’s controls useless, and its’ return to home’ function (which usually kicks in when the drone has a low battery) is triggered.

ACOUSTIC DETERRENTS The Long-Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD for short, is an acoustic deterrent originally developed for military use. But as the threat of piracy to commercial shipping and yachting in certain areas such as the Gulf of Aden grew over recent decades, the device has been adopted to deter unwelcome visitors in non-military settings. With

a range of over three kilometers, the sonic device emits an uncomfortable, high-pitched noise above the average person’s tolerance, causing them to be driven away from whoever is controlling it. The device can be adjusted to broadcast voice commands in numerous languages on top of the deterrent tones, allowing you to provide warnings to potential interlopers (or even the odd, suspicious fishing boat).

INTRUDER DIVER DETECTORS

naval vessels, commercial harbors and luxury yachts alike. With a functional range of up to 900 meters for diver detection, it is man-portable, making it particularly quick to deploy, and it can even be placed on the yacht’s tenders to increase your scope of situational awareness. What’s more, the manufacturer has created the system to be environmentally friendly so that it won’t have an adverse effect on the local sea life.

Think someone could sneak up on your Superyacht by pulling on a wet suit and scuba gear? Think again, as some superyachts are choosing to install sonar systems that detect, track and identify divers or underwater vehicles approaching from any direction. Sonardyne’s Sentinel Intruder Detection Sonar is the world’s most widely deployed system of its kind, used by

ONBOARD HOSPITALS Perhaps a yacht is expecting to travel to remote regions where on-theground medical support is less accessible. Or maybe the Owners are more mature and have specific conditions that mean they seek the reassurance of an onsite doctor or nurse. Either way, an onboard hospital is not uncommon request for custom superyacht builders. Kitted out like an emergency room of a private hospital, they are equipped with oxygen tanks, defibrillators, specialized medications, and intravenous fluids, while a number of yachts offer rehabilitation machines for injuries, such as decompression chambers for those who are planning on some serious scuba diving expeditions. And should a patient require further medical attention, most of today’s large yachts have a helipad with the possibility of bringing in medic air services to the vessel, or heli-evacuating them away to a larger facility ashore. Remember the scene in Casino Royale where James Bond hooks himself up to a remote medical diagnostic system and the doctors talk him through his medical emergency with all his vitals up on their screens? Well, that scene is less fictional than you might at first have thought. With the right diagnostic kit placed onboard, crew or even medical professionals can link up to a remote medical support line such as MedAire from International SOS, allowing a team of doctors to see the patient’s condition in real-time and provide advice on procedures or medication in order to stabilize the patient. Before an emergency has even arisen, the telehealth consultants will often provide guidance on medical room design and ventilation, lighting and medical wash facilities, as well as what diagnostic equipment to place onboard. Who needs the flying doctors when you can beam them into wherever you’re in the world at a moment’s notice?

SMART FLOORS THAT TRACK MOVEMENT Currently, in development, these smart floors are like an upgraded surveillance system for the 21st century. A step beyond conventional security cameras, they are minimally invasive in the sense that they have no impact on an owner’s or guest’s experience of a room and their privacy within it, while also being able to alert the bridge if someone unexpectedly enters. And over time, the smart floor creates a digital pressure video of the visitor’s movement that can be tracked and reevaluated. This makes them suitable for very private spaces, like bathrooms and bedrooms. The smart floors can also be used beyond security measures to automatically switch lighting or heating and air conditioning systems on and off, allowing the yacht to become more energy efficient.

WINDOWS AS TOUGH AS STEEL The ingenious engineers behind A60 windows have taken the notion of toughened safety glass to new heights. Made from hot extruded steel or stain-

less-steel profiles, the compound glass windows provide protection against fire for up to an hour. They are available in a range of thicknesses while maintaining low optical distortion and good light transmittance. They can be thermally or chemically toughened, laminated, thermally isolated, and manufactured to be soundproof or bulletproof. When you have concerns about protecting what is behind a yacht’s windows, the A60 is the go-to solution.

A CYBERSECURITY NET Just as any home or office will likely choose to protect itself from outsiders accessing private and personal data, any superyacht could be vulnerable to cyber threats. With the increasing preponderance of wirelessly controlled systems featured onboard, those yachts that do not provide themselves with an added layer of technological security can leave themselves open to hacking. Oceanco works with a select range of top-tier cybersecurity professionals to ensure that its yachts are built with the kind of network protections that will

keep its owners and crew safe, through a combination of initial risk assessments during the development phase of a project and ongoing upgrades as the digital landscape evolves. For custom-built superyachts with unlimited budgets, some owners choose to opt for secret-service level security and privacy on board, maybe because they enjoy cutting-edge gadgetry or they wish to continue their normal lifestyle while at sea. From drone blocking force fields to motiondetecting smart floors, the kinds of futuristic technologies we are used to seeing in action films are now the reality for today’s most spectacular floating palaces.

A city named Ban Tak was established by Jamadevi, princess of the Lavo kingdom, around 663 CE. It became part of the Sukhothai kingdom through battles led by Ramkhamhaeng the Great and formed the main fortress on the western front. The city was moved further west and renamed Mueang Rahang

when the Ayuthaya kingdom was lost to Burma during King Maha Thammaracha’s reign. The city was moved back to the east side of the Ping River during the early Bangkok period. King Taksin was vice-governor of Tak before the Ayutthaya kingdom fell during the war with Burma. As his name was Sin, he began being called Tak-Sin during his time in Tak.

When in Tak, you won’t be entertained with shopping centers, water parks, or other man-made venues. You will find the extraordinary beauty of mother nature by way of one of the most extensive intact natural forests in South East Asia and one of Thailand’s largest wildlife corridors. This is possible due to the linkage of the Mae Wong & Khlong Lan National Parks, the Kha Kaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, the

Thung Yai Naresuan National Park & the Um Phang Wildlife Sanctuary. When not wandering the woods, a worthwhile visit should be made to the ancient community of Trok Ban Chin. Situated on a riverbank, as was often done in the olden days, the river served as a waterway for transportation and receiving goods. A bustling trade helped Trok Ban Chin become a crowded and lively village complete

with several markets, timber shops, and houses owned by wealthy traders of the day. During World War II, bombs were dropped on the town, causing many people to desert their homes and leave. In the past decade, however, this town has been renovated and the houses restored—all coalescing to make Trok Ban Chin an attractive, historical destination worthy of a walkabout.

Seattle was also home to the oldest hotel management company in North America and one of the most admired worldwide, originally known as Western Hotels. The company’s story starts way back in 1903 when Severt W. Thurston arrived in Seattle to pursue a career as a vaudeville acrobat. According to legend, Thurston’s brief career in front of the stage lights came to an ignoble

end when, as the top man on a human pyramid, he was thrown off balance and into the orchestra pit by one of his human supports whose sobriety was in question. Thurston quickly left show business and took a job as a porter in a local hotel. The hotel owner’s son, Harold E. Maltby, became friends with Thurston and, eventually, they decided to enter the hotel business, forming the Maltby-Thurston Corporation in 1910. At roughly the same time, Nebraska native Frank A. Dupar was working in Seattle as a plumber. After several years, Dupar became the owner of Palmer Supply Co., a wholesale plumbing and

supply firm, and promoted apartment houses and hotels in the area with his younger brother Harold. The Dupars initially contracted to lay the plumbing for hotels and apartments, obtaining the materials from their supply business, but then, as their work earned the esteem of the local building community, they began contracting for the construction of entire hotels. Ownership of one particular hotel, the Cascadian, fell into their hands as a result of the stock market crash in 1929. A majority of the investors who were to supply equity funds for the hotel were stripped of their assets by the collapse of the stock market, so the Dupars hired a

stock promoter to sell enough shares in the hotel to meet costs, and the two brothers found themselves owning the 130-room hotel. In 1930, Severt and Frank were seated at different tables in a coffee shop in a small town two and a half hours east of Seattle called Yakima. Both hotel owners were in the area looking to expand their hotel business. As competitors, Dupar and Thurston recognized each other and ended up sitting together. Over a meal, they talked of the advantages of pooling their efforts toward expansion. From those initial discussions, a company was formed

which they named Western Hotels Inc. and right from the start they did things differently. Western Hotels signed management agreements with local hotel owners providing accounting, advertising, and referral services to the owners, as well as the hotel’s personnel, whose salary was paid by the owners. As recompense, Western received one percent of the gross receipts from each of the hotels it managed. In its first year it operated 18 hotels with 3,137 rooms. The following year, in 1931, Western assumed the management of its first property outside U.S. borders by add-

ing Vancouver, British Columbia’s Georgia Hotel to its consortium of hotels. That year, Western concluded a pivotal deal with the Multnomah Hotel in Portland, Oregon. The Multnomah, a prestigious 500-room hotel, was suffering severe losses during the early 1930s, losing up to $20,000 a month. For the first time, Thurston, Dupar & several others entered into a joint purchase of the property. Under Western management, the lobby and the rooms were refurbished, and the failing hotel began producing profits within 90 days.

59

In short order, news of their success with the Multnomah earned Western the reputation as a management team that could produce profits for properties even during the harsh economic times of the Great Depression. Western was an innovator in the industry. In 1946 the company issued the first guest credit card, enabling patrons of Western hotels to charge their rooms, food, and beverage bills to a single account. The introduction of the paper cards was followed the next year by the establishment of “Hoteltype,” the industry’s first reservations system. Before the implementation of Hoteltype, reservations were booked by mail, telegram, or telephone, and often resulted in lost or forgotten reservations. The new teletype machines, however, enabled instantaneous confirmation of reservation requests. And, in 1952, Western was the first to offer 24- hour room service. Western continued to expand in the 1950s, adding 22 hotels located throughout California, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, and Washington. In 1956 the company began managing the massive, 1,200-room Hawaiian Village in Honolulu and, by the end of the decade, had assumed control of four hotels in Guatemala. The 60s, saw Western add 57 hotels to its management contracts, 36 of which were located outside of the United States. The company had become a genuine international concern, with hotels in Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela, Ecuador, Australia, Japan, and Hong Kong. To better reflect this dramatic entry into foreign countries, Western changed its name in 1963 to “Western International Hotels.” During the late 1960s, United Airlines had been searching for an entry into the hotel business to complement its international transportation service. Airlines had just recently begun to seek control of hotels as a solution to the sometimes limited, sometimes overcrowded accommodation facilities offered by the various destination cities the airlines served. For United, Western’s chain of international hotels seemed a perfect match; 78 percent of Western’s hotel rooms were located in cities served by United. In 1970 negotiations were concluded and United and Western merged, with Western operating as an autonomous, wholly owned subsidiary, keeping its management and headquarters in Seattle. As Western’s business expanded internationally, it also entered into a new arena within the hotel industry-building its own hotels. Of the 30 hotels added to Western’s management group in the 1970s, more than half were built by Western. Although Western had aggressively expanded almost throughout its history, its expansion during the 1970s was unique. Instead of managing hotels with 300 or 400 rooms, Western assumed control of much larger hotels, many of which were constructed by Western, such as the 1,500-room Hotel Bonaventure in Los Angeles. Although the company continued to manage smaller hotels, it had begun to focus on the massive hotel complexes that were The Westin Zhujiajian Resort

becoming popular in the industry. Expansion also took the Western name to new areas of the world during the company’s fifth decade of operation. In 1970 a 525-room hotel was opened in Bangkok and, a year later, a hotel of similar size was opened in Singapore, both of which were constructed by Western. Two other Western-built hotels brought the company into South Africa and Norway, with the opening of Johannesburg’s Carlton in 1972 and the Hotel Scandinavia three years later in Oslo. In 1981 Western changed its name to Westin Hotels, and then four years later to Westin Hotels & Resorts. in 1988, Aoki Corp., a diversified international corporation with major lines of business in engineering, construction, and hotels--purchased Westin for $1.53 billion. The acquisition proved mutually beneficial; Aoki Corp. constructed the hotels, and Westin assumed the management of the new buildings. Three years after the acquisition, Westin became the operating company for all the hotels owned by Aoki Corp., including Caesar Park Hotels, the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Hamburg, Germany, and The Algonquin Hotel in New York.

Westin planned to double its size during the 1990s and intended to aggressively pursue international properties, especially in Europe where the company’s presence was limited. Asia was another prime focus. A massive restructuring in 1991 consolidated Aoki’s hotel assets with the Westin operating company. It also created four new regional divisions: North America, South America, Asia/Pacific, and Europe. By 1993 Aoki was planning to sell Westin. The parent company felt it alone did not have the resources to expand those operations. A group led by Starwood Capital and Goldman, Sachs

bought the chain, and the company went on a buying spree, acquiring 22 hotels in one 12-month period. In September 1997 Starwood Lodging Trust announced that it would buy Westin from the group (including Starwood Capital) that bought it in 1994. Starwood Lodging paid $1.6 billion in stock, cash, and assumed debt for the “flagship” brand of resorts.

As of last year, Westin Hotels & Resorts operated 226 properties with close to 83,000 rooms throughout the world, with an additional 58 hotels and 15,800 rooms in the pipeline. Mike Simpson: FINDING FREEDOM Mike Simpson has reawakened his love for sailing since buying a new Beneteau Oceanis 46.1, which he has named Freedom in tribute to a yachting lifestyle he has promoted since founding Simpson Marine in 1984.

When Mike Simpson talks about freedom, he may not rival Mel Gibson’s rousing speech as William Wallace in Braveheart, but he’s still pretty convincing. Simpson believes freedom is ultimately what yachting is about, leading to the company’s tagline, ‘Yachting Freedom Since 1984’. And he also chose Freedom as the name of the Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 he bought last year, over two decades since he last owned a sailing yacht. “That word is in the Simpson Marine tagline for a reason. It captures the whole idea of sailing, enjoying the sea breeze and the oceans. It’s all about freedom, this sense of escape. That to me is the greatest enjoyment of boating, getting away from all the pressure of work, of city life,” says the Managing Director of Asia’s largest yacht dealership, with 12 offices in 7 countries and territories, employing over 100 staff. “It’s just the exhilaration of it. When you’re out on the water, you’re cutting yourself free. There’s this sense of total escape and freedom. It’s always with me whenever I get out on the water. You’re out in a different world and you can just let the pressure and stress drop away. Freedom is a metaphor for sailing.” Simpson has sailed in many parts of the world including North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia, and it was sailing that brought him to this region. Having been travelling since retiring from the British Army in the 1970s, he was in Taiwan when he started building a yacht to sail around the world. He reached Singapore on his first attempt and Hong Kong on his second, each time somebody took a liking to his boat and made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. On the third attempt, Simpson ended up selling his yacht in Singapore again and received an order for another yacht. “The penny finally dropped and I realised I had

stumbled on a business opportunity,” he smiles. Beneteau was the first major brand that Simpson started representing and he’s now in his 36th year as a dealer for the iconic French builder. He took it on in 1985, a year after creating his company and a year before the launch of the Oceanis line. Just this month, Simpson Marine hosted the inaugural Beneteau Cup Hong Kong, May 15th & 16th. The 2-day regatta, reserved for Beneteau yacht owners, combined fun racing with vibrant social events including an evening awards ceremony gala and a beach BBQ. Since he last owned a sailing yacht in the 1990s, his sailing has included occasional days out and regattas on friends’ boats in Hong Kong and elsewhere in Asia, as well as longer cruises during summer holidays in Europe, where he keeps a house in France. However, Covid skewered his usual summer plans last year as boating activity and ownership in Hong Kong had enjoyed a sharp rise, with residents, unable to holiday abroad, spending more time exploring their own city’s natural attractions. It was partly Covid and partly luck that led to Simpson finding Freedom. “It was serendipitous because I usually try to get across to Europe in the summer, spend time at my house in France or flying my aeroplane back in the UK. Last year, that wasn’t possible, so I stayed in Hong Kong and watched everyone else getting out on to the water,” says Simpson, whose company sold 112 new and pre-owned yachts last year, recording over US$200 million in sales. “It was amazing how many sales we were getting because of the lockdown, so obviously the message penetrated to me, that maybe I should be doing the same thing.”

Simpson had considered an Oceanis 51.1 before a well-specced First Line version of the Oceanis 46.1 became available in Hong Kong, after the intended buyer in the Philippines asked Simpson Marine to sell the yacht. “I went on board and really liked the look of it, the layout and the equipment on board,” Simpson says of the 46.1, part of the seventh generation of Oceanis models. “It just seemed to fit the bill perfectly.” Boasting an overall length of 48ft, the model has a Pascal Conq-designed 45ft hull that offers a roomy beam of almost 15ft. Compared to the standard version, the First Line version has a 3ft-taller mast, 28 per cent more sail area, Harken deck fittings, a deep lead-bulb keel and the Performance running rigging. “It’s just a blast. I’ve been doing eight to 10 knots relatively easily. This is a yacht you could happily take to the Philippines and you’d be roaring down there in the right wind,” says Simpson, who typically takes his yacht out at weekends. “The great thing about this new Oceanis range is it offers many qualities of the First range, especially if you opt for the performance package. It’s for owners who want a yacht that’s fun to sail, light, fast and easy to operate.” Simpson is a big fan of the cockpit, which has long sofas either side of a folding table, plus sun loungers either side of the companionway. At anchor, the transom folds down to become a swim platform.

HOT Magazine

“It’s a very large cockpit with a big table so you can sit down with a group of friends and have lunch al fresco or you can eat down below with a group. And because it has two wheels, you’ve got a clear passage through the cockpit, to the lower-deck stairs and aft, where you’re straight onto the swim platform and into the water.” Nauta Design handled the deck layout and the interior, which Simpson is also a big fan of, having seen the Italian studio elevate this aspect of Beneteau’s sailing yachts and Lagoon’s catamarans during his time representing the Groupe Beneteau brands. Freedom has a three-cabin, two-head layout, with a forward owner’s suite and two aft guest cabins, one with an ensuite. “The interior by Nauta Design is beautiful. It’s a fantastic interior for a 46ft yacht, with a very big saloon, good galley, very large owner’s cabin, plenty

of large sea-view windows, plus lots of deck hatches and portholes for ventilation,” he says. “It’s a very well equipped yacht, with everything you need for cruising and living on board, with masses of stowage space and lockers, like the deep bow locker where you can store a gennaker. I find pretty much every feature and aspect works extremely well.” Freedom’s technical equipment includes a generator and air-conditioning, a fridge, microwave, hob and oven in the galley, as well as an electric winch for the mainsail. He admits sailing yachts have changed in many ways since he last owned one. “The decks have been cleaned up and improved from a safety aspect, with all the lines led aft from the mast, under cover. And we never dreamt of electric winches – you had to use a bit of muscle power,” he laughs.

“There has been a lot of refinement in the details. The interiors are now really nice and the choice of fabrics and materials are so much better than when I last had a yacht in the 1990s. “Two steering wheels are also new. In my day, you had one big wheel that blocked access to the sea and you didn’t have the same space in the cockpit. Even having a generator and air-conditioning on a sailing yacht this size wasn’t common back then. They’re great features in this part of the world.” Simpson’s sailing history has included trips along the east coast of the US and the “rather colder and more rugged” west coast of Canada. He says his most adventurous destinations include sailing out of Venezuela to the Los Roques archipelago, while in contrast, the Caribbean’s peak season in the northern winter offers stress-free cruising through its island chain.

“Los Roques was beautiful. I sailed there with a friend who was an experienced mountaineer and adventurer, so we had a great time on that trip,” he recalls. “And I loved the Caribbean in the winter because you’re always beam-reaching whether you’re going north or south.” However, he still believes the Mediterranean ticks most boxes for cruising, while admitting there’s still much of Asia he has yet to explore. “If I’m looking at an area to cruise in, the Med is hard to beat. It’s not always the best wind, but you’ve got such interesting places with so much history and culture, beautiful little ports with lovely little restaurants on the quayside. That to me is magical. I could spend a long time cruising around the Med and always have plenty of variety and interesting things to see and do,” he says. “Having said that, look here in Asia. I’m now exploring more of Hong Kong. Double Haven is a spectacular place to cruise and stay overnight. And from here, you’re just a few days sail to the islands in the Philippines and then you can head into Indonesia, which I haven’t done yet, but that’s something I’d love to do.”

However, at the same time as a potential buyout from a mainland investor failed to materialise, Simpson has found himself rejuvenated by both the success of Sanlorenzo Asia and other businesses within the Simpson Marine Group, which also represents Bluegame, Fairline and Aquila, and operates large brokerage, charter and yacht-management divisions. “Mentally, I had started thinking about the exit plan and what I was going to do such as sailing and flying my plane, but the company has been going from strength to strength and it has been amazing to see what has happened. I’ve really got back into it and here I am, still at the helm and enjoying it,” Simpson says. “I’ve got a great team around the region and particularly here in Hong Kong, where the main market is. With my team doing a great job of running the business, I can still take a month or two off each summer to do my flying and carry on sailing, I’m happy with where I am. Whatever happens, the main thing is to stay active. I don’t plan to retire for a long time.” Courtesy of Yacht Style, www.yachtstyle.com

Having promoted the freedom of the yachting lifestyle through Simpson Marine for over three decades, Simpson spearheaded a collaboration with Sanlorenzo in 2015 that had initially included a gradual exit strategy for him to ease into retirement.
