Another hallmark of life returning to normal was Mister National Universe returning for its 4th edition. The competition took place in Thailand over nine days with host cities being Suphanburi, Hua Hin & Bangkok. Twenty-one men, each representing their country, traveled to the Kingdom to compete and hopefully bring home glory to their people. Contestants came from Turkey, Vietnam, Mexico, Northern Philippines, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Crimea, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Brazil, Korea, South Ukraine, Malaysia, India, Iran, Pakistan, Thailand, Philippines, USA, South India, Nigeria, & France. The Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show has always been a nautical fan favorite which yearly gave a big boost to the marine industry. That was of course until the Pandemic decided to pay us a visit. After a two year Covid hiatus, The Thailand Yacht Show thankfully returned to Ocean Marina Pattaya and drew big crowds. There were big expensive beautiful yachts, lots of marine toys, expensive cars & lots of booths serving delicious food and better drinks. the communal teppan grills, at the Sushi counter, or for families and groups, in one of three private dining rooms, each with its teppan grill as the central feature. Teppanyaki grill houses are said to have originated in Japan after the conclusion of the second world war. Teppanyaki derives from the words’ teppan’ (iron plate) and ‘yaki’ (grilled, boiled, or pan-fried). Typical ingredients used for teppanyaki are beef, shrimp, scallops, lobster, chicken and

assorted vegetables, with the Teppan Chef’s skill and showmanship bringing theatre to the dining experience. The Benihana story started in New York City in the 1960s when 25-yearold Japanese national Hiroaki (Rocky) Aoki opened a small four-table restaurant on West 56th Street. Rocky learned about the restaurant business while growing up in his family’s Café in Tokyo after WWII. He had come to the US in his early 20s as part of Japan’s official Olympic wrestling team. Starting

a business was his opportunity to stay. He named this new business Benihana, the same as the coffee shop operated by his parents in Tokyo. Benihana is also the name for the red safflower plant and the only thing growing out of the bombed ruins of their family’s Tokyo business following WWII. Rocky’s concept was for meals to be theatrically prepared by a knife-wielding, joke-telling chef at a teppanyaki table. The first flushes of success came a year after opening

when the New York Herald Tribune gave it a rave review. The business soon became a darling for celebrities. It ultimately meant Rocky had to move to bigger premises with the Teppan concept retained, if not becoming more theatrical, while maintaining the focus on excellent quality ingredients. Benihana now has franchised restaurants in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Central and South America.

Sipping signature cocktails is how we kicked off our Benihana Pattaya experience. Ume & Momo blends the cultures of Mexico and Japan using Don Julio Blanco Tequila, often referred to as “silver” tequila, with Momo Umeshu Peach liqueur from Japan’s Wakayama prefecture and served in a Tiki mug. We also sample the vodka-based Hana in the Garden. A tribute to Japanese Gardens with coriander, cucumber and pineapple flavours.

Choices for starters included Sushi rolls, Nigiri, plus Sashimi-grade sliced fresh raw seafood. The made-to-order and beautifully presented Crispy Mushroom Sushi was a great start. Black sesame seeds infused rice rolls wrapped around avocado and asparagus, topped with a shiitake mushroom tartare and tempura crumb. A feast for the eyes and taste buds. Those looking for cooked starters will find tempura, gyoza and other choices on the menu. To truly get with the Japanese tone and theme, we opted for the Sake Flight featured on a table-top promotional flyer at our Teppan table. Four different Sake matched with one of the restaurant’s signature sashimi or sushi roll dishes. The saki are from various Japanese regions and of different brewing methods with alcohol by volume ranging from 9 to 17 percent. Their flavour profiles also range from dry to sweet. The four food-saki matchings were spot on. For example, the raw, rich Tuna Sashimi went perfectly well with the semi-sweet and slightly warmed Yuki No Bosha with its perfect balance of acidity and umami. For traditional teppanyaki mains, diners can choose from seafood or beef ordered a la carte, cooked in front of you on the Teppan grill. Your order comes with an appetiser of shrimp and grill-cooked vegetables, a light and palate-cleansing Japanese onion soup, Benihana salad, and rice. Alternately, choose one of the teppanyaki combinations or their Ichiban (best or signature) sharing sets for two. We chose a combination of scallops, salmon, king mushrooms and Australian beef.

And so our Teppan Chef, Daniel, got the work, first with the shrimp starter, while showcasing his humour, grill and performance skills. Be it the rhythmic tapping of his steel spatula when he brings it to the grill, the flamboyant application of condiments like sesame seed, salt or garlic butter. The precise slicing of the shrimp, followed by the cute placing them as hearts on the grill to flipping of the grilled vegetables. Panache - yes, and equally skilled cooking from Chef Daniel. Fried rice accompanied our next set of dishes and was cooked before us on the grill. First came the theatrics with the eggs, as Chef Daniel first tossed whole raw eggs and caught them in his Chef’s hat while still wearing it. Or launching a whole raw egg into the air and neatly slicing it in half with his upturned knife as it fell back to the grill. Then bowls of the fried rice launched from the Chef’s grill spatula swirling through the air to land right side up in front of each diner.

To go with the rice, scallops and salmon were served, and then the beef, accompanied by sliced king mushrooms, all cooked as requested. Each dish is served with matching unique sauces. The accompanying salad with ginger dressing rounded out our mains. Teppanyaki is undoubtedly all about putting the fun into the excellent quality and nicely grilled food. Chef Daniel had it down pat! Benihana Pattaya’s menu offers an enticing selection of desserts. The Flaming Banana Cobbler is described as perfect for sharing. It is banana bread pudding with caramel, crumble, fresh strawberry and vanilla sauce – and as the name suggests, arrives flaming at the table. The Smoked Tokyo Tiramisu and the Hiakkado Cheesecake Brulee also caught our eye. We will have to make room to sample these when next we visit.

t’s been said that a good Cuban cigar closes the door to the vulgarities of the world.

Most cigar enthusiasts have heard the tale of Christopher Columbus witnessing the indigenous Cuban population smoking “cylindrical bundles of twisted tobacco leaves wrapped in dried palm or corn husks.” The Taino Indians rolled and burnt some mysterious leaves, which they called “Cohiba”, in an unknown ceremony for the explorers. From that starting point more than five hundred years ago, tobacco has been traded and planted throughout the world. Since its discovery, Tabaco Negro Cubano or Cuban Black Tobacco has been considered the best of the best because of the unique growing conditions in some areas of the Island. This distinction remains incontestably valid after more than five centuries. The story goes that one of Columbus’s men was particularly drawn to cigar smoking and smoked every day on the long journey back home. Upon arriving back at the shores of Spain, tobacco smoking caught on and quickly became popular across Spain and neighboring Portugal. The French ambassador to Portugal, Jean Nicot, from whose name the word ‘nicotine’ originates, is credited with introducing tobacco and cigars to France in the late 1500s. It was not long before Spanish cigar manufacturers found that Cuba was the ideal place to grow tobacco. The country’s climate and soil were suitable for growing tobacco plants that produced fantastic wrappers, fillers and binders. In 1740, the Real Compãnia de Comercio de la Habana (Royal Trading Company of Havana) was created by royal decree. Spain imported the raw materials from Cuba, assembled the cigars themselves and sold them across Europe. Given that Cuba was a Spanish colony at the time, they were able to forbid Cuban growers from selling the crop to anyone but them. This meant Spain pretty much controlled the production of the world’s best cigars for several centuries. However, in 1821 Spain allowed Cuba to manufacture Cigars and hence the Cuban cigar was born. In appreciation for Spain’s kind gesture, the Cubans used to deliver a box of their best cigars to the Spanish king every year.

Soon, the demand in Spain for Cuban cigars surpassed the demand for sevillas (the Spanish version). Cuban cigars remain to be popular to date and over the years Cuba has created some of the most revered cigars in the world. A great example is Cohiba, a private brand that used to be supplied exclusively to Fidel Castro and high-level officials in the Cuban government or given away as diplomatic gifts. When being interviewed & photographed, Fidel Castro, always had a Cohiba with him, puffing occasionally while being asked questions. In fact, prominent men throughout history were lovers of cigars which added an air of sophistication and

class bequeathed to cigar smoking. Winston Churchill’s love of cigars began in 1895, during a trip to Cuba where he spent several days enjoying local cigars. There is now a popular cigar shape named after him. The “Churchill” cigar. Upon ascending to the throne, King Edward VII quickly reversed the ban on public smoking. The king is famously quoted as having said, “Gentlemen, you may smoke!” John F Kennedy, Thomas Edison, Sigmund Freud, Che Guevara, the list of prominent cigar smokers goes on and on. The Road To Mister National Universe 2022

nother hallmark of life returning to normal after two years of the Pandemic, Mister National Universe launched their 4th edition in Thailand, with the host cities being Suphanburi, Hua Hin, & Bangkok. The competition took place over 9 days, running from 29 May to 6 June. Twenty-two men, each representing his home country traveled to Thailand to compete and bring home glory to his people.

This international pageant for men was founded and is owned by Thai entrepreneur, media personality and the creative director of this Magazine, Ms. Tanya Siri Vijitsomphong. Ms. Vijitsomphong created Mister National Universe as a way to promote tourism around the world with an emphasis on Thailand. Contestants came from Turkey, Vietnam, Mexico, Northern Philippines, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Crimea, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Brazil, Korea, South Ukraine, Malaysia, India, Iran,

Pakistan, Thailand, Philippines, USA, South India, Nigeria, & France. The men landed in Bangkok on the 29th of May, checking into the Official Mister National Universe Bangkok Hotel, Shama Lakeview Asoke Bangkok. Shama Lakeview is a premium serviced apartment style hotel, ideal for short and long term stays. The Contestants day was filled with individual photoshoots. 30 May saw the men make good use of the large fitness facility at

Shama Lakeview, followed by more photoshoots, this one for sponsor Shakira Iconic Bags. Later in the day the men broke up into smaller groups for special activities arranged by Shama to give the contestants a taste of Thai culture. The men learned how to make the Thai classic desert Mango with sticky rice, traditional Thai specialty cocktails and learned the art of crafting lotus flowers. They were then greeted by Khun Pimornrat Puttayot, Shama Lakeviews

Director of Sales & Marketing who presided over the sashing ceremony. At 5pm everyone met on the pool deck for a welcome party. The next morning, after a hearty breakfast and a little more gym time, the contestants, national directors, national & international media along with the organizing staff boarded the coach and headed to Suphanburi, stopping at Nok Thai Lake for lunch. Next stop was Buffalo Village where the men wore their best buffalo farming attire

while being photographed on buffalos. The photos were used for a campaign to save buffalos in Thailand. After the photoshoot there was a welcome dinner for everyone. Wednesday 1 June, saw everyone board the coach and travel to the neighboring province of U Thai Thani where they visited Wat Tha Sung, the famous Crystal Temple. From there they went to the Sakae Krang Mountain Temple where they took in the gorgeous 360 degree views.

Next it was Bhung Nok Thai, one of the hosts of this year’s pageant. Clad in the style of courtly Thai clothing, the men had dinner and learned how to make a Krahtong (banana leaf rafts), with a healthy competition to see who could make the most beautiful and elaborate Krathong. Afterwards, they headed out to the lake to float their krahtong’s loaded with their own prayers, hopes and wishes. Loy Krathong is most commonly believed to have developed from an ancient ceremony to pay respects to water spirits and thank them for their bounty. The following day the men visited a 100 year old market where they bought souvenirs for their family and friends back home, and then stopped at Wat Pa Lelai, a very sacred temple and the symbol of Suphan Buri Province. The Temple is known for granting wishes. After that it was time to head to Hua Hin.

After a 5 hour drive they arrived at the five-star Official Mister National Universe Hua Hin Hotel, the Avani+ Hua Hin, a beachfront oasis with the largest ballroom in Hua Hin. The Avani+ is also home to the first VLCC Wellness Spa in Thailand. Khun Naowarat “Bee” Arunkong, General Manager of the Avani+ was on hand to give a personal welcome as everyone arrived. The men had little time to freshen up before they were whisked away to Heaven’s Kitchen for a special Charity dinner held in their honor. Owner Phet greeted the men and the organizing team. Friday June 3rd was an especially busy day. The morning started off with a swimsuit photoshoot poolside at the Avani+ and then the contestants traveled to the BluPort Resort Mall where they received a 2-hour Muay Thai lesson at the Legend Arena Fight Zone. Muay Thai is Thailand’s National sport, characterised by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and shins.

The men then had a 3-hour cruise on the Chantara Pirate Junk Boat where a themed Pirates of the Caribbean photoshoot took place. At the end of the cruise the boat moored in front of the InterContinental and the men were brought on-shore by dinghy where they were treated to an extremely enjoyable welcome dinner hosted by the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort & Spa. Saturday June 4th started with another photoshoot for official watch sponsor US Master Polo Club & official swimwear 2eros swimwear. Afterwards there were rehearsals for the main event, the Gala Night & Swimwear fashion show held at the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort. The evening saw an overcapacity crowd, mainly women, who were excited to be a part of the international competition and from the noise generated, it appeared they liked what they saw. In addition to the men modeling swimwear, there was also a charity auction with all money raised going to help the plight of Hua Hin’s street dogs. Nadin was the official wine sponsor for the VIP guests & judges.

Sunday 5 June started with the international media interviewing khun Bee, GM of the Avani+ Hua Hin and then closed door interviews with the candidates took place. After completion, everyone boarded the coach and headed back to Bangkok, checking in once again to the Shama Lakeview Asoke Bangkok. From their, they headed to the beautiful Mandorin Oriental Hotel to attend the wedding of one of the sponsors. After 8 days of traveling Thailand, going to new and exciting locations, the competitions final day, Monday 6 June had arrived. The day was spent rehearsing for the pageant taking place that evening. The questions was, “What does Be yourself, be confident, mean to you?” As the judges tallied their scores, a

video presentation was shown of all the activities that the men had participated in over their last 8 days in the kingdom and then another special award was given, Best National Director. The winner this year was Vietnam. The men then came out in their formal wear and it was time to announce more special award winners. The first was “Darling of Hua Hin,” and was won by the person who had the most likes and shares on Facebook and Instagram from the Pirate Boat

The next award was Mister National Universe 2022 Popular Vote which was awarded to the contestant who had the most likes & shares on Facebook & Instagram over the entirety of the pageant. The winner of this award was again, Pakistan. And with that, after careful consideration by the judges, it was time to narrow down the contestants from 21 to 10. Those making the cut included Pakistan, Vietnam, Turkey, Brazil, Bhutan, Korea, Thailand, S. Ukraine, N. Philippines, & India. Each of the 10 men then took turns picking a sheet of a paper from the M.C. which had a question on it and had 30 seconds to answer. A few of the questions asked included, “If you were God for a day, how would you change the world?” Another was “If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why.”? After a short interlude, while the judges did their scoring & with the crowd shouting out their favorites, the top 5 were announced. The top 5 finalists were Vietnam, Korea, India, Turkey, & Bhutan. The 5 men were each then given 30 seconds to answer the same question, “What is your opinion on sex change?” With the questions completed and while the judges went to work making up their minds, Mister National Universe 2019, Mr. Vikash Usham from Manipur India came on stage to address the audience and speak about his time as Mister National Universe.

Following Vikash, all the men came back on stage for the announcements of the balance of the Special Awards. The first was Mister Perfect Body which went to Brazil. The next special award was Mister Congeniality which was given to Nigeria. Next up was the Mister Media Choice Award which went to Tajikistan. Mister Fashion Icon followed and was won by Malaysia. The last Special Award, Mister Best in Formal Wear, went to Iran. And then it was time. The judge’s tallied scores were given to the MC’s and the winners of Mister National Universe 2022 were announced. 4th runner-up / Mister National Intercontinental: Ali Gerami from Turkey. 3rd runner-up / Mister National Earth: Bharat Bhushan from India. 2nd runner-up / Mister National Globe: Donghun Kim from Korea. 1st runner-up / Mister National World: Prema Khandu Wangchuk from Bhutan. Mister National Universe 2022 Grand Winner was Viet Hoang from Vietnam. Hoang is a financial investment consultant, commercial model & dancer. The crowd noise showed appreciation to the judges for the choices they made. Khun Sumanee Guna Kasem then appeared on stage to give the winning Sash & Trophy to Viet and pose for pictures. Once the award ceremony had ended guests enjoyed taking pictures with all of the contestants and Mister National Universe 2022 officially came to an end.
