T

here are names in the auto industry that are Iconic, Henry Ford, Ettore Bugatti, Enzo Ferrari and the Daimler brothers, Paul & Adolf. But, when it comes to speed and opulent luxury, only one family name passes muster, Bentley.

If you don’t know about the Bentley the Flying Spur, it is the best high-performance luxury car that money can buy and is the fastest production car with four doors. It has been called “a supercar for your granddad.” The auto is staggeringly, jaw-droppingly, physics defyingly quick. When accelerating, it feels like you are dropping off a cliff, but not in a bad way. With an endless surge of power, the car takes you from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, topping out at 333 km/h. Unabashedly absurd when you consider the Bentley Flying Spur weighs in at 2,437 Kg (2.69 tons). Bentley of Bangkok was kind enough to lend us a Flying Spur for the day. Put on your racing gloves and turn to page 52 to find out why this car is worth the price, at almost 26 million baht.

The Italian shipyard Benetti was founded in 1873 when Lorenzo Benetti bought the Darsena Luca shipyard and renamed it his own. Azimut Yachts, also Italian, got its start in 1969, being founded by Paolo Vitelli. Azimut started as a charterer of sailboats, later transforming into a builder of large luxury yachts. They bought Benetti in 1984.

The Covid pandemic has caused unrivaled global havoc. That said, a segment of society has been able to look at the sunny side as their fortunes made epic gains. The number of billionaires on Forbes’ 35th annual list of the world’s wealthiest exploded this year to an unprecedented 2,755—660 more than a year ago. Of those, a record high 493 were new to the list––roughly one every 17 hours, including 210 from China and Hong Kong. Amazingly, these folks aren’t the richest ever when adjusting for current dollar worth. Take out your Tiera and turn to page 69 to find out who would be topping Forbes Rich List if they were still alive.

A Conversation with Regen Solutions & Distribution CEO, Shakira Bumrungsorn

G

racing our cover this issue is Angkanang Shakira Bumrungsorn. Shakira, as she likes to be called, is a Thai entrepreneur who is always searching for new opportunities. Raised in the up-country area of Nakorn Sawan, her childhood saw the family struggle. From humble beginnings and with a strong work ethic, she has conquered many industries. HOT Magazine recently had the opportunity to sit down with Khun Shakira, and we are pleased to share our discussion here. Khun Shakira, could you tell us a little about your life growing up? I was born in the province of Nakorn Sawan, upcountry, where my father was a farmer. Growing up our family struggled financially, but I was able to go to university, where I graduated with a Veterinary Degree. I took out a

14

HOT Magazine

loan, started a Vet Clinic in the Sattahip district, and expanded it to a full Vet hospital within five years. From running a Veterinary Hospital, you started Regen Solutions & Distribution, a distribution company servicing the Oil & Gas Industry and other big industries. How did that come about, and can you tell us more about it? Our Vet hospital was located near many leading energy companies dealing in oil drilling and natural gas. These were major companies that had significant needs of all kinds, & that interested me. I started looking for opportunities where I might be able to work with them in some way. Fortune struck one day when I met a British sales agent who worked for the Downhole Sensor Company, and

he was looking for a Thai agent to represent their products. Although I had no experience in the industry or the company’s products, I told him I would work hard and do my very best. I started to learn everything I could, starting with the technology of their products, learning about the energy market as well as business management, and it proved to be a successful venture. In June 2016, I started Regen Solutions & Distribution. Our company provides a wide range of explosionproof electrical equipment for hazardous locations. We do business with many industries, including offshore oil rigs, oil refineries, the petrochemical industry, spray painting industry, mine, tapioca starch industry, sugar industry, etc.

Our customers appreciate our work ethic, loyalty, sincerity, and good service. Apart from that, our products are of high quality and reasonably priced. That’s the formula we use to gain our client’s trust, and because of it, we have a solid customer base. Another business area for us is our “Regen Smart City,” a software platform we developed that delivers energy savings & provides lighting and environmental status, such as monitoring temperatures, noise, and PM2.5. It’s been ten years since we started working in the energy market, and I have to say I feel quite proud of my business feedback. I’m also pleased with the companionship and loyalty that I’ve gained back from my customers, business partners, and employees who encourage and support the business to steadily grow stronger. Recently, you launched a new business selling crocodile leather bags. Can you tell us about your inspiration and passion for this enterprise?

Brand SHAKIRA is inspired by me because I like to dress up and put on accessories to look beautiful and boost my luck. To define luck, for me, it’s a respect and self-confidence I gain before I go for business talks or meet up with important people. Yet, I believe that confidence and reliability can be built from the inside-out and outsidein. The beauty and prestige of crocodile leather gets me ready for any circumstance, especially when I need to feel confident. Consequently, I wanted to pass forward the inspiration through fashion design; the auspicious leather is stamped with an octagon sign representing good fortune and wealth and emphasizes success. You have been defined as a modern woman, brave and versatile. Is there anything else business-wise that you would like to do that you haven’t yet? I believe there are always good opportunities coming along, and I never hesitate to grab those openings. My business principles are to take risks and not to expect too much. I give it my all because I know that’s my dream, and I won’t stop until it’s accomplished. On the other hand, some projects can be considered an opportunity to learn and to improve skills that would benefit other works. Today I can say I’ve completed a lot of my goals. I’ve gained a lot of experiences, the experiences that will help me in chasing other dreams. In the future, I’ll probably take part in politics. What are the life principles that you live by that have made you the person you are today? Well, you have to work hard and always look for opportunities. Most importantly, you have to be honest, authentic, exercise good governance, be humble, but do your best whenever you’re given a chance. Thank you Khun Shakira

L et’s Meet, Vachini Krairiksh Venvell What is your full name and age? Vachini Krairiksh Venvell, 48 yrs. What is your current Job Position? I’m a Marketing Consultant and a Brand Strategist with over 20 years of experience working in various industries ranging from hospitality, real estate, lifestyle to technology. Currently, I’m assisting my husband with his InsurTech startup business, which is planned to launch this year. What do you like most about your profession? My profession is a fulfilling, challenging, exciting, and lucrative career path. I love helping others succeed and grow with an innovative approach that is most well suited to each client or organization. It gives me the flexibility and freedom that I most enjoy. In perception, consultants are often perceived as people who cannot find a real job or a glorified freelancer, who do not like to be tied down with 9 to 5 jobs. But in reality, I believe that good consultants become consultants because we are intelligent people who have a value that is not suited for one company or position. We are thinkers, strategists, and problemsolvers who thrive in different environments and can bring value and real solutions to our clients because of our extensive years of industry experience and knowledge. How long have you lived in Bangkok, and where did you live prior? I’m a born and bred product of Bangkok. I have lived in Bangkok all my life, except when I moved to the USA to study at 11, returning with a Master’s degree when I was 23.

What do you like most about Bangkok?

Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you?

What I like most about Bangkok is its vibrance. It is packed with everything from excitement and chaos to freedom, beauty, and adventure. Through the hustle and bustle, gigantic skyscrapers, temples, to go-go bars. I enjoy the eclectic mix of people and the lifestyle, from eating somtum on the street to wine and dine in a luxury 5-star restaurant. But to be honest, for many years now, I much prefer a simple and humble lifestyle.

I had Borderline Personality Disorder. BPD is described to be a long-lasting mental health problem that causes difficulty regulating or handling emotions or controlling impulses. Some stereotyped beliefs see those with BPD as manipulative, dangerous, attention-seeking or just plain dramatic. My husband and I believe that BPD is just a label. With our love and determination, we can overcome anything. He has been a big part of my life in helping me cultivate and bring out many positive qualities to a diagnosis of BPD and prove the stereotypical misconceptions wrong.

What is your favorite restaurant? My favorite place is at home, cooking our favorite meals with my husband. Food needn’t be fancy, and that enjoying ordinary food with my husband and loved ones makes for a perfect meal—my mantra for a balanced physical and emotional wellbeing. What is your favorite “Special Occasion” restaurant? I don’t have a special occasion, as every day is already “Special.” It depends on the mood and the environment. Everywhere I go with my husband, everything we do together is just about being HAPPY. What do you like to do in your free time? I love to exercise, especially swimming, which helps not just for weight maintenance, toned muscles, and overall health and fitness, but it also elevates my mood, makes me relax, and reduces my stress level. I feel happier after my swim. It’s a sense of achievement. Where do you recommend firsttime visitors go in Bangkok? I suggest they view the Bangkok Sightseeing Guide as it is very informative and helpful for first-time sightseers.

The following eight traits are all worth celebrating; loyalty, empathy, resilience, courage, elation, creativity, resourcefulness, and intuition. What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done? I proposed to my husband to get married and forgot to inform my parents first. LOL

As the name suggests, Beach Society is located beachside and is about

alfresco dining with the ocean as your outlook and cooling sea breezes as accompaniment. Its lunch and dinner menus offer a modern western culinary style with French influences. Three delectable starters kick off our food journey. First, Yellow Fin Tuna Tartare presented simply in a circle on the plate. Finely diced cubes of raw tuna and cucumber are flavoured with Yuzu, a traditional Japanese citrus fruit, soy, and sesame seeds. Petit dollops of Japanese mayonnaise, thin slices of radish and fine crisp shards

Next, pan-seared French Foie Gras is accompanied by caramelised cheeks of mango, toasted brioche triangles, mango, and five-spice jus, and shards of cashew nut Croquent. Crouquent is a French type of nut brittle, and its light crunch ideally contrasts with the rich and buttery duck liver, while the man-

Our next main dish is from the Thai cuisine focused White Oven menu. Miang Goong Pao or grilled jumbo prawns served Thai style with fresh herbs and vegetables, rice noodles plus Thai Seafood Sauce and Nam Jim Jaew. Three delectably sweet and smoky grilled prawns weighing in at just over a kilo is ideal for Thai style sharing. This is seafood indulgence on a plate. There is an option to order 500 grams of these Jumbo prawns, which could be more suitable for one person. Beach Society menus do have a good selection of quality grilled meats. However, we had the fortune to preview the upcoming ‘Steak Society’ promotion which includes six steak offerings from Australia, the USA and Argentina. Top of that list is an Australian Wagu Tomahawk, typically weighing around 1.2 to 1.3 kg which we had the pleasure of sampling. This tomahawk is a meat lovers delight. Cooked on the bone to our liking and served with an assortment of sides: grilled vegetables, creamy spinach gratin, parmesan truffle fries, roasted gar-

lic, and three sauces chimichurri, blue cheese and homemade BBQ sauce. To a chorus of grateful oohs and aahs, our tomahawk was presented to the table, then taken away, sliced and returned. Oh, what a treat we had! For news on the ‘Steak Society’ promotion, which will run for lunch and dinner at Beach Society, keep an eye on the resort’s social media. Additionally, White Oven will be offering a ‘Seafood Showcase’ promotion for lunch and dinner, including the Miang Goong Pao we enjoyed. Both promotions will be available in July and August and can be linked to “Eat & Play at SO.” Did we have room for desserts? Probably not, though, given we were here, we had to sample Executive Chef Tobias Schwarzendorfer’s sweet offerings. Our selection included a Nonbaked Chocolate Cheesecake, caramel sauce, a hazelnut crouquant (brittle), and vanilla ice cream. The cheesecake was light with a chocolate mousse texture and not cloying or overly sweet and, therefore, a delight.

Next was the White Chocolate Ball – two half-spheres of finely tempered white chocolate filled with a scoop of housemade coconut ice cream, joined and sat on a mango and passionfruit coulis. A dark chocolate sauce is poured over the ball at the table for added decadence and a little theatre. Described as Mango Meets Yoghurt Meets Meringue, the final dessert was mouth-sized pieces of fresh mango and banana sprinkled with black sesame seeds. This light and healthy combination was accompanied by petit dollops of yoghurt and raspberry coulis and befriended by crisp yet chewy miniature meringue kisses. A ‘naughty and nice’ ending to a delightful food journey. Returning to the “Eat & Play at SO” locals offer mentioned at the beginning of this article. By spending a minimum of 1,000 THB net per table (for a maximum of 6 people) for lunch or dinner at either the White Oven or Beach Society, your party of friends or family can spend the whole day enjoying the recreational facilities. That includes three swimming pools, one of which has its own Wibit floating obstacle course, tennis and pickleball courts, mini-golf, resort beach, plus 2.2 km of paved track ideal for cycling, running, or surf skating for the kids.

atamarans are a popular design for recreational and racing sailboats for many reasons. Foremost is their overall stability compared to a Monohull. Because of the Catamaran’s design, it does not heel underway and won’t roll while anchored, which adds to its comfort factor and all but eliminates sea-sickness. They are also faster than Monohulls to their due to their pointed hull design. Another big plus is that Catamarans, for the most part, don’t sink, because most are made from closed-cell foam, which floats no matter what. If you have an emergency at sea, the best policy is to stay with your Catamaran. If a Catamaran is damaged, or in very few extreme cases flips, the vessel will float indefinitely (right side up or not). The larger floating vessel will be easier to spot by any search and rescue crew. For nearly four decades Lagoon Catamarans have been the world’s number one catamaran builder and preferred brand with over 6,000 vessels delivered globally. In Asia, Lagoon has long been an extremely popular choice for boat owners and this trend has continued over the past year partially fueled by the Covid pandemic. According to Simpson Marine, Asia’s largest yacht brokerage, “We have witnessed a recent significant surge of interest in boating throughout Asia as it has become one of the best and safest ways to spend quality time with family and friends.” Many yacht owners have found their boat to be their own safe haven of tranquillity and serenity. Catamarans have long been a popular choice for on board living, extensive cruising and chartering in Asia. Subsequently, Lagoon Catamarans are always highly in demand and, being aware of the shipyard’s busy order book, Simpson Marine has secured five brand new Lagoon Catamarans available for quick delivery to Asia in 2021. The available models are: a Lagoon 42, two Lagoon 46s, a Lagoon 50 & a Lagoon Sixty 7.

Lagoon SIXTY 7 – The Perfect Option For Both Coastal & Ocean Cruising Premiered at the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2019, the Lagoon SIXTY 7 is a catamaran characterized by luxury, comfort and style. Given the yacht’s volume, the Sixty 7 is surprisingly nimble in turns, and the driving ergonomics couldn’t be much better at the main console in the salon or up on the flybridge. The displays are all from Simrad. Generated from a three-piece mold tool, the Sixty 7′s hulls are slightly longer and flatter aft than those on the sail version because the extra weight of engines and fuel adds approximately 18,300 pounds to the yacht’s displacement. The Sixty 7 powercat draws less too: just 3 feet, 10 inches. The Bentley Flying Spur

here are names in the auto industry that are Iconic, Henry Ford, Ettore Bugatti, Enzo Ferrari and the Daimler brothers, Paul & Adolf. But, when it comes to speed and opulent luxury, only one family name passes muster: Bentley. W.O. (Walter Owen) Bentley founded his company on 10 July 1919. Over 100 years later, the Bentley name is known across the globe for creating cars with an unrivalled blend of performance

and the finest craftsmanship and materials. Located in Crewe, England, Bentley Motors remains the definitive British luxury car company, crafting the world’s most desirable high-performance grand tourers. Thanks to Bentley of Bangkok, I recently had the pleasure of taking one of their Bentley Flying Spur’s out for the day. With a 26 million baht price tag, I drove more comfortably, knowing a special insurance policy was in place

for my day of motoring. The Flying Spur is a regal, statelylooking car, and I can tell you, it garners a lot of attention. Much of that is due to its enormous presence. It is massive at 5.5 meters long and 2.2 meters wide, making it bigger than a Range Rover. If you don’t know about the Flying Spur, it is the best high-performance luxury car that money can buy and is the fastest production car with four doors. It has been called “a supercar

for your granddad,” but I think almost all of us can appreciate the hyper level of luxury that is Bentley’s hallmark. It is something that draws your attention the moment you sit inside and gaze at the interior. The first thing I noticed when I got into the front cabin was the woodwork. Bentley uses what they call “highly figured wood,” highly figured, meaning it has the best patterns. They have a team of experts that travels the world

looking for the most highly figured wood for their customers. Now you don’t have to have wood; you can have carbon fibre, you can have stone, you can have metal, you can have whatever you’d like, and Bentley’s craftsmen will install it for you. That is one of the lovely things about Bentley; when you commission your car, you can choose all the attributes that resonate with you. Starting with the color, you have 30 to choose from, or

they will make a custom color for you. Their wood veneers are sustainably sourced from forests around the world. The new Flying Spur comes with Crown Cut Walnut veneer as standard, but there are also seven other single veneers to choose from, with or without a chrome pinstripe running along the centre. Or you can opt for one of seven dual veneers, each contrasting a different wood above the pinstripe with a gleaming black veneer below.

Every inch of the interior of the Flying Spur is upholstered by hand. Crafting the hides is a time-honoured process that involves skills taking years to learn. With a choice of 15 hide colours that can be arranged in single tone or duo-tone combinations, matching or contrasting stitching and piping, and adjustable accent lighting, you can personalise the interior of your Flying Spur to create a look that is truly yours. Wherever you sit in the Flying Spur, intelligent technology is presented in an intuitive way, giving you complete control, as with the optional heads-up display and night vision system. The night vision’s infra-red thermal imaging camera monitors 300 meters in front of the car. It displays the image on the driver’s information panel, extending the driver’s view to give extra time to avoid collisions with pedestrians and animals. A large 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen is nicely situated between large swaths of wood trim on the Flying Spur’s dashboard. An optional extra replaces the static infotainment screen with a rotating display that rotates the screen into the dashboard and brings up a wood panel featuring three analog dials (an outside temperature gauge, a clock, and a compass). Passengers can connect to the car’s Wi-Fi hotspot, and with compatible smartphones, enjoy the Spur’s Apple CarPlay integration. A 10-speaker stereo system comes standard, but you can upgrade to either the 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen setup or the 19-speaker Naim system, which was in the car we had. I don’t know how to best explain the audio quality other than to say I’ve never experienced such musical beauty in an automobile before. For the rear-seat passengers, the newly designed and precision-crafted Touch Screen Remote allows you to stay connected with the front cabin, move the seat positioning and share information with the navigation system. The Remote also gives passengers control of the rear cabin environment, such as the window blinds and airflow. It sits within the centre console and can be removed at the touch of a button. A big plus to being chauffeured is the optional champagne fridge that chills your bubbly to the correct temperature, depending on its vintage. The flying spur offers a duality of character that not too many cars can match. If you like being driven, just as much as you like taking the bull by the horns and driving yourself, then ultimately, it would be hard to find a car that does a better job.

The formidable 6 litre W12 engine is about four times the size of an average motor. The car produces 635 PS of power and 900 Nm of torque, more than most supercars. With effortless acceleration, a seemingly endless surge of power takes you from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, topping out at 333 km/h. The car is staggeringly, jawdroppingly, physics defyingly quick. When accelerating, it feels like you are dropping off a cliff, but in a good way. This is even more absurd when you consider it weighs 2,437 Kg (2.69 tons). The Flying Spur offers four driving modes, Comfort, Sport, B for Bentley (a combination of the two), and Custom. In Comfort, the ride is simply amazing. It kind of feels like a yacht floating on the ocean. Sport is a little too firm for everyday driving. I found leaving it in the “Bentley Mode” offers a magnificent compromise of the two. Another cool feature is that the car uses rear-wheel steering, which can turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels at slow speeds for better

maneuverability, perfect for agile urban driving and effortless parking. At high speed, the front and rear wheels are steered in the same direction, enhancing stability for extra control when overtaking and cornering. console that runs the entire length of the sedan’s cabin. Elsewhere, a new steering wheel design provides more access to the car’s driver-assistance features. In addition, new wood trim inserts are available for the rear door panels, and rear-seat picnic tables are an option.

Part of the reason for that is Bentley’s 48-volt active anti-roll technology. Electronic actuators on the anti-roll bar of each axle automatically adjust to enhance both handling on corners and ride comfort. The end result is when you go barreling into a corner, the whole car just stays flat, like magic.

As I knew I would when driving away from Bentley of Bangkok in the morning, it was unbelievably hard to make the turn back into their dealership in the evening. The Bentley has always been my dream car, and this was a glorious day. It was a day where I learned that If you want to drive in unparalleled luxury and comfort at incredible speeds, there is no finer motor car than the Bentley Flying Spur.

The Flying Spur also employs an electronically tuned air suspension using three-chamber air springs to continuously adjust the air volume, ensuring a smooth, comfortable ride. The Flying Spur was redesigned for the 2020 model year, so 2021 brings only minor tweaks. Chief among them is a new optional four-seat configuration, which replaces the rear bench seat with two buckets and a fixed center

The Park is located off of Petchkasem Road (Highway 4), about 23 km’s from Prachuap Khiri Khan town towards Thap Sakae. From Bangkok, it’s about a 4-hour drive, covering 300 km’s in distance. The Hat Wanakon National Park got its start as a forest park before it was

upgraded to a national park in 1992. Covering a total of thirty-eight square kilometres, it is one of the smallest national parks in Thailand, which makes exploring it a convenient feat. Sixty percent of the Park is land, with the balance water. This includes a long stretch of beach and out into the sea for seven kilometers encompassing two islands. varieties of plants. The stretch of sandy beach across the Park is very clean and well maintained. More than sixty types of wildlife can be found in the area, including porcupines, the tree shrew, squirrels, the Burmese hare, skunks, the golden jackal, and various snakes. Birds are also plentiful, with more than forty-eight species populating the area. Not surprisingly, bird watching is a common hobby amongst people who

make their way here. Some of the more interesting birds that can be viewed include the Pacific Reef Egret, the black Drongo, the Black Naped Oriole, the Blue Tailed Bee Eater, and the Indian Roller. Likewise, the sea is home to a large variety of aquatic creatures ranging from the common to more unique, such as the snakehead fish, the walking catfish, and the climbing perch. The

area is also home to dolphins, which inhabit deeper waters but can be seen from the shoreline. To me, the highlight of the Park is the two islands, Ko Chan and Ko Taisi. About 7 km offshore, they boast the most abundant coral reef in the Gulf of Thailand, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. Thankfully, fishing boats are not allowed to enter.

Hat Wanakon National Park extends up to the peaks of the Tenasserim Hills, which separate Thailand from Myanmar through the creation of a natural border—allowing you to trek into the mountains and stroll on the beach all on the same day. There are several trails that hikers can take, amongst them the Hua Krang and the Hin Chuang nature trails, which extend two kilometers and three and a half kilometers, respectively. Hua Krang leads you on a casual two-hour stroll, while the Hin Chuang route takes about three hours. The trails take you through a large variety of flora, including an extensive array of mango and bamboo trees. There are a variety of beaches popular at the Park. The most prominent one is Wanakon beach, which on days of low tide extends up to a hundred and fifty metres into the water, allowing for visitors to venture into the sand and feel as if they’re endlessly walking out to the shoreline. It is common for visitors to venture into the Park at dawn and watch the stunning sunrise above the crystalline shoreline. This part of the beach gets a great breeze, making for a cool atmosphere even during the hottest days of the year.

The number of billionaires on Forbes’ 35th annual list of the world’s wealthiest exploded to an unprecedented 2,755--660 more than a year ago. Of those, a record high 493 were new to the list––roughly one every 17 hours, including 210 from China and Hong Kong. As of June 11th, the top spot saw Bernard Arnault & family, with a fortune of US$196 billion, closely followed by Jeff Bezos, with a net worth of US$193.5 billion, and Elon Musk, with US$153 billion. Henry Ford 1863–1947 (84 years) Country: United States Net worth: US$218 billion (adjusted for current dollar value) Overall ranking: 5th Wealthiest historically Henry Ford was an American automotive engineer, entrepreneur, and founder of the Ford Motor Company. By designing the Model T Ford with mass production in mind and employing the assembly line method of rapid production, he was able to radically lower the base price of his automobiles and reach a wider market. As production increased, Ford further reduced prices and increased salaries to reduce worker turnover. This resulted in a rapid increase in output, with Ford production rising from roughly 18,000 cars in 1909 to over 1 million cars in 1920. Despite Ford stating that his focus was increasing Ford Motor Company’s benefit to society and to its employees, even at one point being sued by the Dodge brothers based on this premise, his company was massively profitable. His highest earnings were recorded at age 57 and he died at the age of 83 in 1947 with a net worth of US$218 billion.

By the time of his death in 1937, estimates (if using his wealth as a percentage of US GDP) place his net worth at US$406 billion.

Jakob Fugger 1459–1525 (66 years) Country: Germany Net worth: US$465 billion (adjusted for current dollar value) Overall ranking: #1 Wealthiest historically Jakob Fugger, also known as Jakob Fugger the Rich, was a famous German mining entrepreneur, merchant, and banker who lived in the 15th century during the ‘Renaissance.’ He belonged to a merchant family from the ‘Free Imperial City of Augsburg’ and was elevated to the status of ‘Grand Burgher of Augsburg’ through marriage. His family business expanded and spread across the whole of Europe. He started with textile trade and grew rapidly to diversify into mining and banking. In 1485, he came into contact with Archduke Sigismund who was the sole owner of Tyrol. The Archduke was always short of funds due to his lavish living and became dependent on Fugger for heavy loans. Fugger, in return, gained rights to silver and copper

mining in Tyrol. He gained monopoly over the copper trade in Central Europe by securing mining rights from the king of Hungary after giving him large sums of money as loans. He then expanded his business by operating smelting plants and constructing roads to export the copper overseas. Though mining and banking were his main businesses, Fugger contributed to the Portuguese fleet for spice trade with India in 1505. When the king of Portugal declared spice trade to be a monopoly of the crown, he was still dependent on Fugger for copper, which was required for trade with India. Fugger extended loans to the Pope Leo X to build the new ‘St. Peter’s Basilica’ to establish business with the Vatican. He also financed recruitment of the ‘Swiss Guard’ in 1505/1506, which is operational till today. After the death of Maximilian, he gave financial support to Carlos I that ultimately resulted in Carlos being crowned as Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor on June 1, 1519. This further indebted the royalty and enhanced the monopoly of Fugger over trade. He established ‘Fuggerei,’ which is the oldest social housing complex still in use.

He sold the venture three years later in 2010 for $2.2 million, before starting his second company, Leqi, which helped foreign brands market their online stores on Chinese e-commerce platforms such as Tmall and JD.com. His third venture was gaming studio Xunmeng, which created web-based role-playing games, often featuring scantily clad female characters.

Huang’s next venture, Pinduoduo in 2015, was in ecommerce, a space that was dominated by Alibaba and JD.com at the time. But having gained experience in both ecommerce and games, the serial entrepreneur believed he could find success by gamifying online shopping. Drawing on his experience in games, Huang turned Pinduoduo into a “gamified” shopping app. Buyers can water a virtual mango tree while they shop — if the tree is tended enough days in a row, users are sent a free box of mangoes. This encourages daily visits to the app. As Huang wrote in the company’s IPO prospectus, Pinduoduo is like a combination of Costco and Disneyland. As well as subsidies on orders, Pinduoduo offers users cash rewards for playing a game that involves bringing others to the platform. His approach has drawn masses of buyers and, in turn, sellers, who pay for advertising, which is key to the company’s business model and generates more revenue than sales. Pinduoduo was listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange in New York in July 2018, just three years after it was founded. At the time of the initial public offering, its shares were priced at $24.6. Today they’re trading at $160.9, and the company is valued at $197 billion. Huang’s fortune has steadily grown in recent years, climbing the global ranks from being the 94th wealthiest globally to number 57 in 2020, and 30th today.

4/5 Ma Huateng Country: China Net worth: US$58.2 billion Overall ranking: 22nd Ma Huateng, also known as Pony Ma, was born on October 29th, 1971. In 1989 he enrolled in Shenzhen University and graduated four years later with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. His first job out of college was with China Motion Telecom Development, a supplier of telecommunications services and products, where he was in charge of developing software for pagers. He reportedly earned $176 per month. He then went on to work for Shenzhen Runxun Communications Co. Ltd. in the research and development department for Internet calling services. Five years out of college, Ma, along with four other classmates, started Tencent in 1998. The company’s first product came after Ma participated in a presentation for ICQ, the world’s first Internet instant messaging service, founded in 1996 by an Israeli company.

Inspired by the idea, Ma and his team launched in February 1999 a similar software, with a Chinese interface and a slightly different name – OICQ (or, Open ICQ). The product quickly became popular and garnered more than a million registered users by the end of 1999, making it one of the largest such services in China. Since Tencent’s prized service OICQ was offered free of charge, the company looked to venture capitalists to finance its growing operational costs. In 2000, Ma turned to US investment firm IDC and Hong Kong’s telecom carrier Pacific Century CyberWorks (PCCW) who bought 40 percent of Tencent’s shares for US$2.2 million. With the pager market declining, Ma improved the messaging platform by allowing QQ users to send messages to mobile handsets. Afterwards, 80 percent of the company’s revenue came from

deals struck with telecom operators who agreed to share message fees. Ma decided to expand the business portfolio. In 2003, Tencent released its own portal (QQ.com) and made forays into the online games market. By 2004, Tencent became the largest Chinese instant messaging service (holding 74 percent of the market), prompting Ma to list the company on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. After the company raised $200 million in its IPO, Ma quickly became one of the richest people in China’s telecom industry. At Ma’s behest, Tencent launched in 2005 the C2C platform Paipai.com, a direct competitor to e-commerce giant Alibaba.

product. After two months, one team presented an app for text messaging and group chat – WeChat – which launched in January 2011. As of March 2021, WeChat has over 1.24 billion monthly active users. Tencent surpassed a market value of US$500 billion in 2018, becoming the first Asian technology company to cross this valuation mark. It has since then emerged as the most valuable publicly traded company in China and among the world’s top technology companies by market value and has stakes in over 600 companies. As Chairman of Tencent Holdings, Ma is the second richest man in China for the third year running, placing 22nd in the global ranks.

Mimicking Microsoft, Ma created two competing teams of engineers in 2010 and charged them with creating a new

He dropped out of school in the sixth grade when his parents became persecuted by local authorities amid the chaos and uprisings of the Chinese cultural revolution. In his early teen years, Zhong took any job he could find to help support himself and his family. He worked in construction, he was a door-to-door salesman and a newspaper reporter. In 1988, at the age of 34, Shanshan was selling mushrooms, prawns, and turtles on the island of Hainan. He then got a job as a salesman at the Wahaha beverage company, and he sold healthcare supplements.

In 1996, at the age of 42, Zhong founded a bottled water company in Hangzhou, which went on to become Nongfu Spring. In 1999, Nongfu Spring stopped removing the natural minerals from its water in a savvy marketing move. This turned out to be wildly popular and increased their exposure to the bottler’s target audience, where distilled water was the norm at the time, despite many worrying about its health benefits, or lack thereof. Through a combination of organic growth and acquisition, Nongfu eventually grew to be the largest water bottle producer in China and one of the top three packaged juice and tea producers. With the addition of selling coffee and vitamin drinks, it has become one of the largest beverage companies in the world. The company beat out behemoths in the industry,

such as Coca-Cola, Watsons, and Pepsi to become China’s best-selling package beverage brand. Zhong took advantage of new technologies such as cloud computing and big data to gain a key advantage in understanding Nongfu Spring’s customer base. This allowed for unparalleled market expansion across the country and transformed this once humble company into a leviathan of epic proportions. According to Nielsen research data, Nongfu Springs natural water became the most popular bottled water in 2012 and the number one seller of packaged beverages in China, maintaining its dominance for eight consecutive years. Zhong is also known for being more low-profile and reclusive than other top business leaders,

which has earned him the nickname “lone wolf.” “He’s not known to have many entrepreneur friends,” said Hoogewerf, a longtime China watcher who is based in Shanghai. “He just kind of gets on with his own business.” Zhong also controls vaccine maker Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy, which went public on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in April 2020, while his Nongfu Spring went public in September 2020. The combination massively increased Zhong’s wealth, expanding the “Bottled Water King’s” fortune from 18.9 billion dollars to over 50 billion dollars. His wealth grew even more over the last twelve months to US$72.1 billion, with Shanshan taking the number 16 spot globally.

VALLE RISES TO THE TOP After well over two decades with Azimut Yachts, Marco Valle is settling into his new role as CEO of Azimut-Benetti Group, overseeing a huge collection of motor yachts ranging from 34ft to 354ft and managing a family-owned dynasty that shows no signs of slowing down. Giovanna Vitelli, Vice President of Azimut-Benetti, publicly welcomes Valle as Group C Firstly, after 24 years with Azimut including four years as CEO, how has your role changed now that you’re CEO of both Azimut and Benetti? When the Vitelli family offered me the position of CEO of the Group, I was both anxious because of the complexity of the role and fascinated by the challenge. And it was the latter emotion that prevailed. Leading the entire Group is much more than managing two brands. Benetti and Azimut Yachts are completely different entities and must remain so. My task today is to capitalise on the best practices of both, optimising flows and functions so there’s no unnecessary overlapping and the whole company becomes more agile and efficient.

The Azimut-Benetti Group’s 2020 press conference and gala evening was held in Portofino in September and featured the Azimut Magellano 25 Metri and Benetti Oasis 40M

CEO at the September 18 press conference; he officially began his new role on September 1

I travel a lot between the two locations, Avigliana and Livorno, to actively participate in their main activities. Paradoxically, the restrictions linked to Covid that discourage international travel are allowing me to divide my work week equally. Which parts of the new job have most tested you? I’ve spent over two decades in Azimut Yachts, so I’m familiar with all the internal mechanisms and most of my senior colleagues. Benetti is a complex reality, with its centuries-old history and production logistics. I am trying to learn the ‘family vocabulary’, which is not to be taken for granted. At the same time, I feel I’ve already established a great relationship with my new colleagues, perhaps because I’m a familiar face. Did the launches of the Azimut Magellano 25 Metri and Benetti Oasis 40M, soon after you started your new role on September 1, help provide a positive end to a 2020 plagued by Covid? I think the whole company deserves credit for having had a particularly timely reaction when the pandemic broke out. We were all aware of the need for an immediate change of pace. Each initiative that resulted from this approach is the outcome of a precise strategy. I’m very satisfied with all of the initiatives being a great success, which allowed us to close the year more than satisfied. In late October, the Group announced an increase in annual turnover in Asia-Pacific including many Azimut Grande deliveries and four Benetti Oasis sales. Why do the Group’s large models hold such a big appeal in this region and how important are dealers such as Marine Italia in Hong Kong? I believe our success in Asia-Pacific can be attributed to three main factors. One, we know this market very well because we have been present locally long before our competitors. Two, we’re good at distinguishing the tastes and expectations of the market’s customers, so push those models that will most likely meet their approval. Three, we’ve built an excellent network of dealerships – Marine Italia in particular, but not only them – that oversees the area better than most of the competition.

HOT Magazine

95

How much has the Group’s overall business been affected by Covid? Like all Italian shipyards and many other European ones, we stopped for almost two whole months in March and April 2020. When we got back up and running, it was extraordinary to see how much enthusiasm and passion each staff showed on their return, with the firm intention of doing their part to make up for lost time. And we ended the nautical year in substantial balance with the previous fiscal year. How have Azimut and Benetti changed their business models to adapt to life in the Covid era? Personally, I think a luxury good such as a yacht must be visited and experienced several times before being purchased. As can happen when it’s necessary to develop a plan B, we discovered the importance of working better on all the touch points of CRM (customer relationship management). We have not changed our business model, but we did implement many important initiatives aimed at creating an even better customer journey. How did the Azimut Virtual Lounge and e-Boat Show change the way the shipyard communicates with existing and potential owners, as well as dealers? When we realised many boat shows would be postponed or cancelled, we immediately thought we had to create a virtual experience for our customers, a space we could present our models in detail and an arena for interactive exchanges. That’s how the Virtual Lounge was born. It was then filled with images and videos, leading to a virtual boat show. This event gave interested and potential customers the opportunity to ask questions directly to dealers and sales managers, and we even closed the sale of an S6! As for our dealers, we’ve increased contacts and appointments through virtual meetings and sales-school sessions and are developing introductions to the new models entirely dedicated to them. Can you tell us more about Azimut’s use of BCool engineering? Our collaboration with the company that produces the BCool system had already been in place before the Covid pandemic, yet we were happy to offer customers the option on the Magellano 25 Metri at a time when they felt its real usefulness.

Azimut’s biggest new model of 2020, the Magellano 25 Metri features an exterior by Ken Freivokh and an interior by Vincenzo De Cotiis, making his debut in yacht design

Azimut Magellano 25

This innovative Marine Mechanical Ventilation System (MMVS) is based on a NASA patent and was originally developed for use on aerospace missions to sanitise the air on board. The system imitates and reproduces the process that takes place in nature, exploiting the combined action of the rays produced by a special UV lamp and a catalytic structure, without affecting the yacht’s power and consumption. After the success experienced on the Magellano 25 Metri, we are now evaluating how to extend this offer to other models. Why did Azimut choose to work with Vincenzo De Cotiis and what has been the reaction to his interiors on the Magellano 25 Metri? At Azimut-Benetti, we like to continually raise the bar. After about a decade of collaborations with designers from sectors other than ours such

as retail, luxury real estate and hotels, we met Vincenzo, who is an architect, a designer and a prominent exponent of collectible art. We were fascinated by his artistic use of fibreglass, the basic material for the development of yachts up to a certain size. Vincenzo put extraordinary passion and great enthusiasm into the project, despite it being his debut in the nautical world. We worked with four hands, combining his poetic creativity and our constructive know-how, but at no time did Vincenzo forget that the result had to be a yacht, not a house, and he respected all the essential needs of onboard life. I guess this is why clients love the yacht and Vincenzo is already working on the bigger sister, the 30 Metri. Is the Magellano range now more relevant because of the current desire

for greater volume and economy? The Magellano 25 Metri is selling well and we also recently proposed a ‘Timeless’ version customised by the Azimut style office to respond to US clients’ tastes. I believe that, like the whole Magellano line, this model meets the needs of those who love long cruises. Magellano is a very seaworthy line. It has large spaces and immense windows. Usually, where there’s technology there’s little aesthetic appeal, but on this yacht, you are surrounded by beauty. The Magellano line is as silent and reliable as craft intended for long voyages should be. The model features a great cockpit design that offers an infinity view when the aft panel is lowered. Will we see this on other models?

HOT Magazine

97

According to many customers, the cockpit is becoming increasingly important. I’d say there’s a great demand for a subdivision of spaces that blend external and internal areas, a request that arises from a less formal way of living on board. If the cockpit is well designed and finished, it becomes a natural extension of the main saloon, only closer to the waterline. So, for sure, we will see this on the next Magellano and other Collections of both brands. Tell us about your newly launched Azimut Grande Trideck? The Trideck is the largest boat ever built by Azimut Yachts, at 38.2m in length and with a 7.9m beam. It’s also the brand’s first three-deck yacht and a symbol of the shipyard’s capacity for design, stylistic and construction innovation. It has a highly innovative layout, designed for a contemporary owner who seeks constant contact with the outside environment and thinks of their boat as a place of conviviality. Informality, dynamism and flexibility of spaces are the fundamental concepts of this yacht. What can you tell us about the new Azimut 53 Fly? The 53 Fly is the new entry model of the Flybridge Collection, so part of a market segment in which Azimut Yachts is a leader. It’s a yacht of almost 17m that entails stylistic content and a

layout typical of much larger boats. It offers large volumes while maintaining a sporty appearance and slender lines, with the characteristic Azimut style immediately recognisable. Alberto Mancini has managed to create a yacht that is aesthetically very refined yet defined by functional, comfortable environments that allow the owner to live on board without needing crew. Maximum functionality is combined with refined aesthetics down to the smallest detail.

three gigayachts over 100m in parallel and launching them in the space of just 100 days sounds like an epic tale, made possible only by audacity and supreme determination.

Which Collection is the most important for Azimut in terms of annual turnover?

Numbers don’t lie. The FB272 Luminosity, which has a volume well above 5,500GT, required over 2 million working hours with spikes of more than 400 workers per day and the cooperation of more than 150 specialised international companies. Having acquired this know-how, we are now committed to repeating the experience and we already have something down the road.

The success of the brand is guaranteed by the good balance in terms of sales of all Collections. Indeed, one of the distinctive points of the Azimut-Benetti Group and the reason for its success is the breadth and completeness of its range, which starts from 34ft and goes up to 100m and beyond. With three 100m-plus ‘gigayachts’ built by Benetti, how has the perception of the shipyard changed and are there more megayachts or gigayachts to come? The ‘gigayachts season’ – as we’ve defined this extraordinary adventure – represents a milestone in the history of Benetti and an achievement that no one would have imagined possible for the Group even five years ago. Building

The new Oasis 40M is distinguished by its spectacular aft area where the sides drop to expand an already enormous beach club, with a pool as its focal point

98

HOT Magazine

It rightfully brings Benetti into the Olympus of the international builders of gigayachts. The creation of these three giants required putting together a brilliant team of experts, a massive investment in terms of advanced industrial processes, and constant attempts to progress.

Why do you think the new Oasis 40M has proved so popular? The Benetti Oasis is in line with the changing tastes of customers, who are beginning to value peace and relaxation over formal opulence. In my experience over the last couple of decades, tastes have always changed, but I think we’re now looking at a bigger shift in what people want. They still want something unique but at the same time they want something more relaxed.

With a staggering volume of 5,844GT, the 108m Luminosity is the world’s largest hybrid yacht and the biggest of three 100m-plus gigayachts built by Benetti

The owner and guests can have much easier access to the water, while services on board are much less formal, as are their lives. I think the Oasis platform jumps onto that at just the right time, evidenced by the number of units already sold. However, the yacht is more than a trendy floating beach club. The Oasis is also great for cruising between ports. It has a cruising speed of 14.5 knots, with a top speed of 15 knots, and a range of 4,000nm at 11 knots. Which Benetti models are most suitable for Asia? Benetti is a brand characterised by a great heritage that has always fascinated yacht owners from all over the world. Clients in Asia are no different, although large and custom models are the most popular in the region. In fact,

we recently sold a 65m Custom yacht, FB270, which will be the first Benetti built under China Classification Society and Lloyd’s Registry rules. Yet I see Oasis holding a strong appeal, especially for young owners with an idea of life on board being closer to the Mediterranean lifestyle. What and who is the upcoming B.Yond series most suitable for? The B.Yond is a new generation of expedition yacht. The project aims to offer an unprecedented level of rationalisation of onboard volumes due to the strict separation of the functions of each deck – lower deck for the crew, main deck for the owner and his guests, upper deck dedicated to the living area. It boasts volume like a 500GT yacht in only 37m and offers an open design

for better views and closer contact with the sea. Yet I think its main feature is the use of new hybrid propulsion expressly created by Siemens for our Group. This meets the expectations of owners who love to live on board in full privacy and are particularly attentive to the issues of sustainability and energy saving. Finally, which designs or technologies are increasingly important to yacht owners? Some common traits have emerged in recent years. There’s increased interest in proximity to the sea and making the area close to the water into a real beach club with seats, sofas and so on. Also, there’s a desire for greater connection between interiors and exteriors, using large windows and opening doors, and removing visual obstacles to create a flow.

There’s also increasing attention to consumption and sea pollution. We are the proud builders of Luminosity, the world’s largest hybrid private yacht, and the exclusive users of the best system developed so far in the nautical sector, created by Siemens. There’s growing interest in gyms and areas intended for yoga, even in prominent areas of the boat. Finally, luxury is now expressed more as attention to details than ostentation or overabundant aesthetics. Courtesy of Yacht Style www.yachtstyle.co www.azimutyachts.com www.benettiyachts.it
