unreef Yachts made global headlines in early June last year when tennis legend Rafa Nadal received his 80 Sunreef Power Great White at his home port in Mallorca. Soon after, on World Oceans Day on June 8, the Polish builder announced a tie-up with another sporting icon when it named Nico Rosberg as the Ambassador for its new Eco range of luxury solarpowered sailing and power catamarans. Rosberg is best-known for a high-profile Formula One career that included 23 wins in 11 years, including nine in 2016 when he won a gripping World Championship, pipping Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton after finishing runner-up to the Brit the previous two years. However, just five days after securing the championship at the season-ending race in Abu Dhabi, the Monaco-based German announced his surprise retirement from the sport at the age of 31. Since then, Rosberg has established himself as a successful e-mobility and green tech entrepreneur and investor, leading to his ongoing partnership with Sunreef. Reach for your racing gloves and turn to page 44 to find out how Nico went from Petrol Head to Eco-Hero. Nestled in a peaceful corner of the lower northern region of Thailand, the small town of Uthai Thani is situated among the embrace of lush mountains, a diversity of ethnicity, and beautiful culture. The Sakae Krang River is a waterway that has been a lifeline for the people of Uthai Thani since early times.

There are countless hotel brands, and each one is targeted at a specific segment of travelers. Of all the brands, one of the most exciting and fun is So/ Hotels & Resorts. Accor, one of the world’s leading hospitality groups, owns SO/ and they describe it this way; “SO/ reinterprets the codes of luxury hospitality through an unconventional attitude, an unmistakably playful and audacious twist to luxury experiences. Each hotel has a distinct personality, style, and even its own fashion statement. The entertainment is fantastic, the food is creative, and the atmosphere is vibrant. This is the place to be and be seen.” This month’s Let’s Stay takes us to the spectacular SO/ Sofitel Hua Hin, which actually isn’t in Hua Hin but in the North of Cha-Am, making for faster trips from and to Bangkok. This 5-star resort rewards guests with playful artwork and contemporary architecture encompassing 100 imaginative rooms and 9 lavish villas, including their signature Private Pool Villas. The most striking indication of the bond between the people and the river occurred in 1906 when King Rama V visited the Northern provinces and stayed in Sakae Krang village, where the monk Phra Khru Uthai Tham Nithet built twin rafts to receive the king. A Conversation with Itphumm Tanatchok
T
hirty-three-year-old Itphumm Tanatchok has the nickname Phet, but all his foreign friends call him Photo because it’s easier to remember. He was born in Bangkok but grew up outside the city in outer provinces, where he learned humility, hardship, patience, persistence, and survival. Khun Photo says he never had the life of a typical teenager. Starting at age 11, he had to earn his own money, and ever since that time, he has been

busy trying to succeed in life. Most of his friends have been older, and he has learned from them. One of the things he learned was that if you want to be an entrepreneur, make friends with entrepreneurs, and If you want to be good at sports, have friends who are athletes. Photo graduated with a bachelor’s degree in International Business Administration. He says he believes in planning his life, and he lives systematically. He entered the entertainment
industry as an actor because he wanted to expand his business in the future. At 33, he employs more than 40 people, and although he says it hasn’t been easy, hard work and perseverance have prevailed. Photo says he has failed three times in his life but was never afraid to get up and start over again. He says failure only teaches us to be stronger and never to make the same mistake twice. His aim in life is to work harder than others and retire at 35 to enjoy his life.
He has a saying, “work hard and play hard later.” HOT Magazine recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Khun Photo, and we are pleased to share our discussion here. Khun Photo, how long have you lived in Hua Hin, and what do you like about it? I have been living in Hua Hin for nine years. I decided to leave Bangkok for Hua Hin because Hua Hin is a nice,
quiet city. The cost of living is lower, and the location is excellent with its easy travel to and from Bangkok and the Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Hua Hin has many excellent attributes; it’s a beach town, has mountain vistas, delicious international restaurants, has excellent shopping facilities, including two large shopping malls and three international standard hospitals.
Within a half-hour drive, Hua Hin has nine international golf courses, including the Black Mountain Golf Course, rated number 1 in Asia. There are many more attractions, including excellent hospitals, international schools, and beautiful beaches. So, I chose to live and do business here because it is an attractive city for investment and will grow further, thanks to the fantastic infrastructure being built, which will include the high-speed train from Bangkok

You are an entrepreneur, running several businesses. Can you tell us about your Mountain Range Villas and Mountain Range Vistas development? Yes, my current building developments are “Mountain Range Villas and Mountain Range Vistas.” After listening to our customer’s wants and needs, we believe we have chosen the perfect location and will be building houses different from others. Our hallmark will be to build homes & communities, not simply pool villas. Here you will be able to design the inside of your home with the help of our architect. Located just minutes away from the Black Mountain Golf Course & Waterpark, Mountain Range Villas is a Nordic design of just nine private homes with a natural European aura. Situated on two rai of land, owners will love the beautiful mountain views. Land sizes vary from 240.64m2 to 346.84m2 and range in price from only THB3,500,000 to THB4,999,000. The homes consist of; 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a European-style kitchen, a living room, & Sala with two sunbeds. The exceptional point is the ceiling height of 4 meters, allowing good ventilation. With natural light entering every room, which saves on electricity bills. They will also include a large swimming pool, beautifully manicured gardens, and parking for two cars. The overall project will consist of a tropical garden style with different varieties of plants, trees, and shrubs. Most importantly, the plots are freehold, and the common fee is only THB 1,900 baht per month. Water and electric will be from the government with no added charges. A CCTV security system and key fob access will be installed with solar lighting to keep costs to a minimum. All services (Garden, pool, maintenance staff, and cleaning services) are available if required. Our second project, “Mountain Range Vistas,” is a Danish design blended with the look of the Chinese imperial palace, giving the owners a feeling of luxury. They are for those who have achieved a stage in their lives when only the very best will suffice. Limited to only ten private and exclusive pool villas, the homes will consist of 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a living room, European-style kitchen, a spacious saltwater swimming pool, Sala, BBQ area, and large courtyard. Land plots are 500m2, and are freehold.

Good skincare doesn’t have to be the most expensive, but the quality must be the best. Thru research, we have developed a formula that suits both Asian and European skin types, with a great emphasis on safety.
Wow, now there is a great question. It might sound stupid to answer this way, but my answer is truthful and from the heart. I am gay, & I want to get married to a man who loves me for me. of the four restaurants at the Epicurean Hub. Available all day from 11:30 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., hotel guests can take their time and enjoy lunch, afternoon tea or dinner served by their private butler. Capacity was increased recently due to popular demand as many guests enjoy the Dine’cation Package. The Dine’cation has also attracted many leisure guests, taking advantage of the Restaurant Style Dining and staying over almost complimentary, as whatever is paid as room rate is given in dining credit. This offer bloomed from the traditional staycation, which came with restrictions meaning people were missing going out to dinner, and so the Dine’cation was born. With every aspect of dining taken care of, guests can now have their own private office space in addition to their own private dining rooms at The Athenee Hotel. These spaces are offered complimentary, adding to their private and sanitized space of what is normally expected from a hotel. In addition, these Executive Office Suites offer 24-hour access, room service, private bathroom, lounge seating and coffee making
machine. Technology support can be provided if needed and up to four registered guests can use together, as an extension to the hotel room. Guests must pre-book, as subject to availability, and they are given the key for private access. Once they are finished, the office suite is cleaned and sanitized, ready for use again. The office is offered to all hotel guests who are staying a little longer, with no time limits and complimentary. Combining Restaurant Style Dining rooms with an Executive Office Suite, with no additional charge for these spaces, highlights the value offered and has changed the lifestyle of guests staying at the hotel. Anticipation Builds For 16th PropertyGuru Thailand Property Awards
O
n 20 January, Thailand’s leading market commentators met to discuss the state of the economy and the real estate industry in a media roundtable ahead of the 16th edition of the PropertyGuru Thailand Property Awards. Speakers at the Media Roundtable included Jules Kay, Managing Director, PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards, Suphin Mechuchep, Chairperson, JLL Thailand, Kamolpat Swaengkit, Country Manager, DDproperty, & Paul Ashburn, ASPAC Leader, HLB Real Estate Group and Co-Managing Partner, HLB Thailand. With more new categories at stake, Thailand’s longest-running real estate awards programme renewed its call for entries and public nominations as experts delivered updates to the kingdom’s recovering property sector. The 16th PropertyGuru Thailand Property Awards will be held in December at an exclusive black-tie gala dinner and presentation ceremony to be safely

conducted in Bangkok. According to Kamolpat Swaengkit with DDproperty.com, residential property prices will likely continue to decline this year because of Covid-19 and the economic slowdown, which affect buying decisions. Kamolpat went on to say, “New projects are targeted towards horizontal living, buyers with real demand, and investors with no affordability issues. Property prices will likely remain stable until the end of 2021 or until the pandemic improves.” The second quarter of 2021 was an “attractive time” for buyers and long-term investors in Thailand due to low-interest rates and property prices, especially those of condominiums, according to DDproperty’s recent Thailand Property Market Index. Bangkok’s property Price Index stood at 190 points in Q2 2021, a decrease of 4 percent from the previous quarter and the lowest index since Q2 2018. Although the decline in the Price In-
dex applied to all residential property types, it was particularly evident in condominiums as consumers expressed more interest in horizontal properties or homes that offer bigger living spaces. This is consistent with DDproperty’s latest Thailand Consumer Sentiment Study, which reveals that more than 50 percent of consumers choose property size as the number one priority when buying or renting a home. Kamolpat shared her insights at the virtual media roundtable alongside other market experts that included representatives of JLL Thailand, the country’s largest international property services firm. Suphin Mechuchep, chairperson of JLL Thailand and chairperson of the Awards judging panel, gave attendees an overview of what to expect this year at the PropertyGuru Thailand Property Awards, including the programme’s expanded list of categories.
pation of HLB Thailand as Official Supervisor. Paul Ashburn, co-managing partner of HLB Thailand and ASPAC leader for HLB Real Estate Group, joined the roundtable on behalf of the country’s leading international accounting and advisory firm to present on the integrity of the Awards’ judging process. The 16th PropertyGuru Thailand Property Awards will be accepting official entries and nominations from the public until 27 August. Submissions are currently being accepted here: AsiaPropertyAwards.com/nominations. Winners and Highly Commended awardees will be revealed on Friday, 3 December 2021, at The Athenee Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Bangkok. The in-person gala event and awards presentation will premiere online on the same day at AsiaPropertyAwards.com/tv-podcast and the official channels on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube. Viewers can also watch highlights of the programme on the History Channel, the Official Cable TV Partner of the Awards. Country winners in top categories from the Thailand event will advance to claim the “Best in Asia” honours at the 16th PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards Grand Final on 9 December. The finale is part of PropertyGuru Week, which also includes the latest edition of the PropertyGuru Asia Real Estate Summit, the tech and thought leadership platform of PropertyGuru Group which opens on 8 December, and the international awards presentations for country winners in Australia, India, Japan (Greater Niseko), Sri Lanka, and China. In 2020, the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards online gala series, which included the 15th edition of the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards Grand Final, was viewed more than 516,000 times and reached viewers and investors in more than 75 countries worldwide.
These new categories include; Best Developer (Eastern Seaboard), Best Developer (Phuket), Best Developer (Samui), Best Developer (Northern Thailand), and Best Developer (Southern Thailand). For a chance to experience Executive Chef Konrad Renggli and his teams’ food first hand, plus taking in the ambience of this prime location beachfront eatery, the Let’s Eat team made a visit. Soda-based signature mocktails with either lychee and rose syrup or passionfruit, mint and Thai basil were a refreshing start. A basket of homemade breads and locally sourced and produced butter were served complementary to the table, as was an Amuse Bouche, a bite-sized hors d’œuvre of teriyaki chicken with a passionfruit coulis. An appealing and tasty start to our Big Fish dining journey. Leading out our three appetisers was a Scallop Ceviche. Very lightly cured scallops with avocado puree, hints of coconut, salmon caviar pearls, and a delicate sprinkling of crushed peanut. This was fresh local seafood handled with the lightest of touch. With its uniform petit cubes of fresh tuna, the Tuna Tartare was mixed with cucumber, sesame, pickled tomato and flavoured with black garlic and miso. Presented with microgreens and delicate edible flowers decoration, it was a picture of freshness.

Our final appetiser was a locally produced creamy Burrata. A glistening white pouch of fresh mozzarella with a creamy centre, paired with a salad of eggplant, basil and pine nuts. A harmonious marriage of Italian flavours to which Chef adds the earthy, pungent, mushroomy and nutty flavour notes of truffle, creating a clear counterpoint in this dish. The main courses sampled included two seafood dishes plus a grilled Wagyu Beef Striploin – one of two non-seafood menu dishes. The gloriously tender beef was chargrilled to our liking, accompanied by a rich jus, generous dollops of creamed celeriac, fresh corn kernels, plus a popped corn crumble topped with a fine soil of bacon and grilled onion rings. A satisfying plate with premium beef as the hero. Chef’s pan-fried Red Snapper Fillet was served skin side up, atop a sautee of fennel, bell pepper and edamame, accompanied by a chorizo crumb. From the Catch of the Day board, we sampled Thod Makham or deep-fried local tiger prawns with a delightfully tasty sweet and slightly sour tamarind sauce which added that uniquely Thai essence to the dish.

If you are not in the mood for making choices, then one of the two Big Fish FourCourse Degustation Set Menu could be an option. Both include an appetiser, entrée and dessert. There’s a choice of either Red Snapper or one of the two non-seafood dish options for your main course. These Degustation Set menus are priced at THB 1,950++ for the Red Snapper Set or 2,600++ for the Wagyu main course Set. With a choice of three desserts on the Big Fish menu, we simply said yes. Thus removing any laborious end of meal deliberations. Our trio of desserts was served on a long wooden board, making it easy for sharing. The Sorbet Selection featured a scoop each of lime, raspberry, and mango. The raspberry freshness shone through in that sorbet, while the mango and lime each had a deliciously creamy texture of ice cream. The other two desserts had each taken a classic and reworked them. The traditional French baked custard of Crème Brulee with its burnt sugar top was reinvented as baked cheesecake infused with lemongrass and accompanied by touches of fruit salad, coconut cream and pineapple sorbet.

Bangkok’s Condo Market, Resilient And Ready To Bounce Back

angkok’s bright lights may be dimmed for now, but Southeast Asia’s most liveable - and lively - city will roar back to action as soon as the pandemic eases. That’s the view of Chomratkamol “Gor” Soontortarawong, Executive Sales Director at Lazudi Bangkok, who says even as daily life goes back on hold, the condo market is still buzzing driven by new arrivals to Thailand and strong sales in the city centre. Chomratkamol has had a ringside view of the city that is continually growing, evolving, and bouncing back. “This period is no different,” she says, “It’s presenting a challenge like no

other, but one the City of Angels will recover from.”
In fact, I’m going to say it... I’m busy… unbelievable, right?
What impact has the pandemic had on Bangkok’s condo market?
I was worried about the impact of a major lockdown on our sector, but it seems people keep searching and making appointments. The clients out there are keen to buy or rent; if not, they would not make appointments during this difficult time.”
“I’ve worked in real estate in Bangkok for 18 years - so I’ve seen a few ups and downs in the market! Last year, during the first round of the pandemic, people were understandably frightened to go out for viewings, and things stalled for a few months. During this third wave, things are not as badly affected. There are viewings mostly virtual tours - and negotiations every day with discounts out there to be picked up.
But who rents in a pandemic? “The leasing market is still going very well. Expats, foreigners just arriving, and Thais Looking to relocate are all checking out the market. Some are making bookings from quarantine. That’s partly because rental fees have dropped by 10 percent or more. The
CBD of Bangkok - Sukhumvit, Sathorn, Silom - is always popular, but right now, the same budget can land a larger space. People with a one-bedroom unit can now look for two bedrooms at the same price or relocate to a new building. Bangkok rental prices have been going up a lot over the last few years. But this time, the opportunity is there for tenants to upgrade. We have foreign couples and independent arrivals - people coming here vaccinated, with work permits looking for the long-term - sitting in hotel quarantine looking forward to having a condo the moment they get out, and there’s much more choice for them.
What about bargains for buyers?
reopens fully - hopefully next year.
“For sure, there are discounts out there. Thai buyers focus mainly on new developments, and foreigners tend to look more for resale in those key CBD locations - Sukhumvit, Silom, Sathorn or the riverfront. Some sellers who have many properties might be trying to get rid of some of them for the cash or might be happy to drop the price in the locations they want to exit.
It’s the most expensive and exclusive area, where expats especially can find anything they need in their soi; fine dining, an excellent international supermarket, English-speaking people, and a community. It also has doubleaccess via Sukhumvit and Petchburi roads, so the expressway and airport are easy to reach. It’s not only the building they are looking for, it’s the surroundings they want to buy into.”
But if you want to buy in certain areas, the price is holding its value. For example, in Thong Lor/Prom Pong, the prices won’t drop that much and will start rising as soon as the market

We do a lot of virtual tours over LINE or Whatsapp right now, especially for those in quarantine who want to see units and are ready to book and move in right away (rental). I know some developers who have their own in-house applications to reach clients. It’s been rewarding to embrace the challenge and adapt to this new time. I know Bangkok will come back, it’s the capital city of 10 million people, so no matter what, real estate transactions are moving all the time. The price never drops in the CBD, but the city is also becoming better connected with the BTS reaching new areas, bringing that condo market online. For example, ‘Gen Z’ Thais, who have been working for a few years, there are many affordable new developments in Bang Na thanks to the sky train connection.

Joint 12th in all-time Formula One wins with 23, Rosberg’s new career in sustainable technology led to his ambassador role for Sunreef’s Eco range
Sunreef Yachts made global headlines in early June last year when tennis legend Rafa Nadal received his 80 Sunreef Power Great White at his home port in Mallorca. Soon after, on World Oceans Day on June 8, the Polish builder announced a tie-up with another sporting icon when it named Nico Rosberg as the Ambassador for its new Eco range of luxury solar-powered sailing and power catamarans. Rosberg is best-known for a highprofile Formula One career that included 23 wins in 11 years, including nine in 2016 when he won a gripping World Championship, pipping Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton after finishing runner-up to the Brit the previous two years. However, just five days after securing the championship at the season ending race in Abu Dhabi, the Monacobased German announced his surprise retirement from the sport at the age of 31. Since then, Rosberg has established himself as a successful e-mobility and green tech entrepreneur and inves-

tor, leading to his ongoing partnership with Sunreef. However, despite a globe-trotting sporting career that overlapped with Nadal’s for many years, Rosberg never met the Spaniard until a chance encounter in the Balearic Islands late last year. “It was funny,” he smiles. “I was in a bay in Formentera, south of Ibiza, and Rafa suddenly arrived on his new yacht, Great White. I had never met him before, but we both had the Sunreef connection, so I swam over to his boat. “It was really nice. He said, ‘Oh, it’s so cool that you’re also in partnership with Sunreef for their Eco range. Let’s have a chat.’ He was super happy to have his boat, so we just sat on the back and had a nice conversation.” The son of Keke Rosberg, the 1982 Formula One champion, Rosberg was born into racing and became a global superstar during seven years with Mercedes, partnering compatriot Michael Schumacher and Hamilton – F1’s two most successful drivers – for three and four years respectively. Yet despite a sporting career based
on power and speed, Rosberg prefers to sail when on the water and has enjoyed spending time testing a Sunreef 60 E from his base in Monaco, where he has lived for much of his life. “I love sailing. The sheer beauty of it is just unbelievable. When I was on the Sunreef, letting the sails out, using the power of the wind and enjoying the silence just gives you this amazing way of enjoying nature,” says Rosberg, whose luxury brand partnerships also include Kempinski Hotels. “But there’s a responsibility. I’ve been enjoying our oceans so much throughout my life because I’ve been so fortunate to be on boats, and anyone building yachts has a responsibility to take care of the oceans and that’s what Sunreef is doing so well. This is definitely the right path for luxury yachting.” Rosberg’s partnership with Sunreef stemmed from his father introducing him to Francis Lapp, founder and President of Sunreef, passionate rally car driver and Formula One fanatic. “Francis is a huge racing fan, so we
Pictured helming a Sunreef 60 E near Monaco, Rosberg’s F1 championship-winning season in 2016 included wins in China, Singapore and Japan met in the paddock and got talking. It only really kicked off when I realised how passionate about sustainability Francis and the Sunreef crew were, because that’s my path as an entrepreneur. I was like, wow, we have so many synergies, we should do something with this. The partnership with Sunreef Yachts totally fits into my mobility ecosphere.”
SUNREEF’S ECO PATH Rosberg is impressed with what he has seen at the builder’s facility in Gdansk on Poland’s north coast, where Lapp’s background as an electrical engineer has ensured that Sunreef has always prioritised the most advanced technology in its luxury catamarans. “Francis is an engineer at heart, so they have engineering excellence as one of their highest priorities. That’s
why it’s fascinating what Sunreef is coming up with, to make luxury yachting sustainable, and why it’s a pleasure to work with them. In the factory, they have a whole innovation space where innovators are trying new technologies and making progress all the time.” In just a few years, Rosberg has quickly got up to speed on a whole variety of sustainable technologies and was quick to recognize the brand’s cutting-edge work in combining electric propulsion with a remarkable solar-power system and super-light, high-performance batteries. “It’s all really, really innovative and trailblazing. I love that they’re pushing boundaries. Their solar-powered solution is particularly innovative, how they’re covering the hull of the boats with tiny solar cells. They’re focused on reducing weight, using carbon a
lot and introducing more sustainable materials,” he says. “At the moment, they’re working on building future hulls with a basalt and linen material combination, which would be a huge step in sustainability. They’re really trying everything, using recycled teak instead of new teak and many other examples. It’s really awesome and very fascinating.” As well as making yachts and boat operations more eco-friendly, Rosberg says it’s important that sustainability in yachting starts to make the move from niche and idealistic to mainstream, even ‘cool’. Although he’s involved with and surrounded by green tech pioneers, he does believe that sustainability in yachting is becoming more than good PR.
Since retiring from Formula One as world champion, the Monaco-based German has since invested in over 20 e-mobility and green tech companies

“I think what’s changing is that a yacht owner can impress people if their yacht is ultra-sustainable, because that’s just cool. Having petrol-burning black smoke coming out the back just doesn’t impress anyone,” he says. “In the next couple of years, you’ll be able to impress with a yacht that’s super innovative in terms of sustainability, like Sunreef’s solar-panel solution, especially when you see the drive-train solution integrated into the yacht and maybe even wind power generators. That’s going to be the way to impress in future. “People are more conscious of our environment and every yacht owner wants to impress with their boat, so I think that’s a strong power.” Rosberg says the appeal of ecofriendly yachts and other vehicles is only going to increase with both future generations demanding the technology and the technology itself improving over time. “If the owner’s kids are coming on board and the yacht’s blowing smoke out the back, they’re going to be like, ‘Hey, what are you doing?!’ All these different powers are coming into play and it’s becoming a big trend, which is
amazing because we’re facing such a big threat to the environment.”

FORMULA E TO EXTREME E
In late February, the RMS St Helena, Extreme E’s floating paddock and base, departed the UK for Saudi Arabia carrying the series’ freight and infrastructure, including race cars.
Rosberg’s business portfolio includes being an investor and shareholder in Formula E, the global electric-car series that started with its first race in Beijing in September 2014 and whose venues in Asia have also included Putrajaya, Hong Kong and Sanya. However, he has a more personal involvement in the brand-new Extreme E as the founder and CEO of Rosberg Xtreme Racing, one of 10 teams competing in the 2021 series featuring male-and-female duos racing electric SUVs off-road in remote locations. Spanning four continents, the fivestop series is designed to highlight the impact of climate change and human activity on some of the world’s remote locations, while promoting sustainability and the adoption of electric vehicles to help protect the planet. Covering a variety of environments, the schedule featured the Desert X Prix in Saudi Arabia (April 3-4), Ocean X Prix in Senegal (May 29-30), and the upcoming Arctic X Prix in Greenland (August 28-29), Amazon X Prix in Bra-
As well as Rosberg, high-profile team owners include Hamilton, the seventime F1 world champion, and Jenson Button, the 2009 world champion who will be one of his team’s two drivers. Like Rosberg, Hamilton won’t be at the wheel, but his team’s drivers include Sebastien Loeb, the nine-time World Rally Championship winner. Sunreef has come on board as a corporate partner of Rosberg Xtreme Racing, a natural sponsorship considering Lapp’s long history of rally driving including two editions of the Paris-Dakar Rally and last year’s Africa Eco Race, which Sunreef partnered. For Rosberg, the Sunreef synergies just keep on coming. “It’s such a coincidence,” Rosberg laughs. “When I came to him with the project, he was like, ‘I can’t believe it, that’s so cool, I want to support’. He even came to the first official test we had.”

Rosberg and fellow Formula One world champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button are among team owners in the new Extreme E global series
Rosberg says the involvement of three recent Formula One world champions and rally legend Loeb show that sustainability is increasingly a cause worth promoting. “The Extreme E line-up is really impressive now, with some big names and big car manufacturers. It’s because everyone is searching for a platform where they can really affect positive change and this is what Extreme E provides.” Extreme E is also set to showcase the potential of hydrogen power, which could have a much larger role in yachting in the future. In January, Extreme E unveiled the hydrogen fuel cell generator developed with AFC Energy that will be used at each race location to charge the race fleet using zero-emission energy, with the only byproduct being water for utilisation elsewhere.
“We’re going to have hydrogen power stations, so the electricity in the cars is going to be powered by hydrogen fuel cell chargers. This is really innovative and massively reduces the emissions of the championship. It’s really forward thinking and that’s what makes Extreme E so special.” Rosberg is also excited about hydrogen’s potential use in yachting, but in contrast to how sailing yachts and solar power rely on wind and sun respectively, hydrogen power requires a lot more man-made infrastructure. “Hydrogen is most likely to be the future solution. The problem is the whole yachting ecosystem needs to be geared to hydrogen. A yacht built to be powered by hydrogen would be fantastic, but you must think about the whole supply chain and how the hydrogen gets to the harbour and this
system isn’t there yet,” he says. “You’d need to get a renewable energy source, which is perfect near the water as you can use either an offshore wind farm, wave energy or tidal energy. If you have something like that next to a harbour and then an electrolysis plant that converts the water into hydrogen, that would be a fantastic solution to power the boats. I believe hydrogen is the future, but it’s very far away. “In the interim, Sunreef is doing it the right way, having solar power and electric batteries as a large range extender and making the yacht totally self-sufficient. You have the hybrid solution for the worst-case scenario, using the generators for extra range if needed.”

PETROL HEAD TO ECO-HERO Overall, it has been a remarkable few years for Rosberg, whose transition from petrol head to e-mobility pioneer was as surprising as the timing of his retirement. “During my racing days, I had no interest in anything else apart from winning the next race and my family. I had achieved my dream and it was the perfect moment to make the exit and to look back totally fulfilled. I also wanted to spend more time with my family,” says Rosberg, who has two daughters with his wife Vivian. “It was only after my career finished that I really opened my eyes to sustainability. I made a promise to pursue a life of purpose and dedicate myself to the greater good while supporting others doing good for us as a society.” Now employing 20 staff in his head office in Monaco, Rosberg is co-owner of TRE (Team Rosberg Engineering) and has invested in a portfolio of more than 20 green tech and e-mobility companies and start-ups. These companies include Volocopter (air taxis), Lilium (electric jets) and Tier Mobility (e-scooter sharing startup). “Mobility is my ‘home’, but as a sector, it causes one-fifth of the global emissions, so there’s huge potential to do good by accelerating the necessary change. We can now see how e-mobility is coming in and it’s a huge accelerator to making mobility more CO2-neutral and emission-free. That’s why I’m very passionate about being active in the mobility space as an entrepreneur.” Rosberg is also the co-founder of the Greentech Festival in Germany, which has been held annually in Berlin since its debut during the city’s Formula E event in May 2019, was simultaneously held online last September, and this year is scheduled to be held again at the Kraftwerk venue from June 16-18. Overall, Rosberg has engineered a bold and widespread move into the world of business, but one that has proved financially successful so far. “It was a steep learning curve, but I’ve got a nice team around me with a lot of experience. It’s also about building a strong network of other VCs (venture capital firms) who have a lot of experience, knowledge and competence, and leverage on their experience. This path has been very successful,” he says. Rosberg is an investor in German flying taxi company Volocopter, which has performed test flights in Singapore 50

“We recently had a big exit from one of our first investments, so it’s an exciting time. If you look at the ‘unicorns’ (privately held startups valued at over US$1 billion) from our early investments like Lilium, Tier Mobility, which is very close to being a unicorn, and Formula E, things have gone very well. Some don’t do well, but on average, it has been a very successful journey.” Rosberg’s influence even extends to playing a part in Monaco’s decision to introduce electric buses. Other cities he praises include Copenhagen for the way it has integrated cycling into the city’s infrastructure and Singapore, which he sees as a potential leader in emobility, with Volocopter among companies looking to unveil operations in the city-state. In fact, Rosberg is scheduled to participate at this year’s World Economic Forum in Singapore from August 17-20 in his role as a Young Global Leader, having spoken at previous editions in the Alpine town of Davos in Switzerland. “Sustainability is now one of the biggest topics at the World Economic Forum, whereas it used to be geo-political matters or things like that,” he says. “Now, sustainability is number one, which gives us all a lot of hope.” Courtesy of Yacht Style www.yachtstyle.co www.sunreef-yachts.co www.nicorosberg.com

Thailand’s yesteryear when the riverside lifestyle thrived amongst clusters of rafts and floating houses. The Sakae Krang River is a waterway that has been a lifeline for the people of Uthai Thani since early times. Life on and around the river eventually grew from a small community into the major province that it is today. Some residents continue to live and make their livelihood on the river. The most
striking indication of the bond between the people and the river occurred in 1906 when King Rama V visited the Northern provinces and stayed in Sakae Krang village, where the monk Phra Khru Uthai Tham Nithet built twin rafts to receive the king. Play in your expansive SO Arty playground with a separate living room, or take it outdoors and have a private party all to yourselves in and around the 3x9m private pool. Like the layout of the one-bedroom pool vil-
las, these highest category villas come with an added bedroom with en-suite bathroom. These villas are spread out near the Event Lawn and Rabbit Lawn in proximity to the sea, with one twobedroom villa occupying a coveted beachfront location. While on holiday, why not pamper yourself at their SO/ SPA. This quintessential spa experience combines French cosmetology from PHYTOMER and ancient therapeutic arts with Asian wisdom products from YTSARA. Next to SO/ SPA is SO/FIT. Open 24 hours a day, their fitness center features state-of-the-art equipment from Technogym, offering a modern holistic approach to traditional exercise. Guests of the SO/ Sofitel Hua Hin can enjoy not one, not two, but three swimming pools. The SO Pool is a spacious outdoor swimming pool located right on the beachfront with sunbeds and cabanas. The Solarium Pool is located in the center of the resort. Their Signature Pool is the hotel’s main pool, a large 16 by 60-meter watery playground
anchored by a Wibit inflatable water pool adventure course running down the middle of the pool and overseen by trained lifeguards. A dedicated 5 by 5 meters shallow kid’s pool area on one end is bordered by SO Sundae poolside ice cream and snack bar to ensure a splashtastic time for all. When your appetite kicks in, you are right where you need to be. The hotel’s Beach Society is a beach club by day and refined restaurant by night, offering two distinct vibes for lunch and dinner. With open-air seating steps from the sea, gentle breezes, and stunning views over the Gulf of Thailand, Beach Society is the perfect destination for a leisurely lunch date or a sophisticated dining experience. White Oven is their all-day dining establishment. Open from 6:30 AM to 11:00 PM, it is designed around its eponymous white oven. It serves international breakfast buffets and authentic Thai cuisine exquisitely revisited to showcase the gifts of the garden, the sea, and the artistry of the chefs.

SO Sundae is next to the Signature Pool, where light bites, dessert, imaginative flavored ice cream, and for-adults-only popsicles provide the perfect refreshments for a fun day in the sun. By now you have probably realized that the SO Sofitel Hua Hin is an ideal hotel to bring the kids. They will thoroughly enjoy the Kids Tent, a 74 m2 kids club near the Signature Pool, which provides a gathering place for the playful creatures around the resort to meet and mingle with little guests. Fun activities and entertainment are offered in a safe setting under watchful supervision. Inside the air-conditioned space, safari styling and plush seating invite little escapists to join in a led crafts activity, dive into the ball pit, play PS4 or Nintendo Switch games, or sit back and enjoy an age-appropriate movie. A program of activities tailored for kids includes recycle craft projects, kids’ yoga, and sand painting. Outside, a playground features slides, swings,
and a rubber surface floor for ouch-less spills, while older kids can battle it out on the life-sized chessboard at the Rabbit Lawn. Further activities include their 18hole SO Wonderland Adventure Golf, a tennis and basketball court, a Pickleball Court, and a 627 meter-long bike path that meanders along the resort. Adult and children’s bikes are available for rent. While the SO Sofitel Hua Hin is the perfect place for a relaxed holiday, it’s also a great destination to get business done in a stress-free environment. The hotel’s SO Ballroom measures 230 sqm’s and is ideal for events up to 150 guests. Equipped with cutting-edge AV equipment and smart solutions, everything is on hand for mingling and networking, dancing and dining, and raising a toast to a thoroughly successful event. The hotel’s Event Lawn, situated right by the beach, is an open-air outdoor area ideal for a range of MICE functions ranging from small private
group dinners on the beach to banquet dinner, concert performance, or highimpact show by the beach. The 285 sqm lawn can fit more than 150 guests, all happy to be close to the sand and feel the sea breeze. Exclusive accommodations, unparalleled restaurants, and a wide array of activities all come together to provide couples, families, and business people an unforgettable, imaginative escape at the SO Sofitel Hua Hin.
