NOTE

Y

acht Charters have experienced a surge in popularity since Covid appeared in 2020. By chartering a yacht, you can design a bespoke holiday shared with family & friends, all within a healthy bubble.

One of the most exciting yachts available for charter in this corner of the world is the Phuket-based Ocean Emerald. Launched in 2009, the 41 metre (135 foot) Ocean Emerald broke all the rules when it came to boat design. Legendary British architect Lord Norman Foster designed her, and he is known for not doing conventional. The man has given the world such landmark buildings as London’s 30 St. Mary Axe, better known as the “Gherkin,” the spaceship-like Apple campus in Cupertino, California, and the ocean liner-style Yacht Club de Monaco. Dig out your well-worn deck shoes and turn to page 28 to see why the Ocean Emerald should be part of your next holiday. Long before there was any other spirit crafted, distilled, and manufactured, there was rum. It is the first branded spirit ever made. An early version of rum dates back to antiquity. Using the technique of fermenting sugarcane juice, the Malay people produced a drink called Brum thousands of years ago. And the guy who has had his hand in everything from pasta to ice cream, Marco Polo, recorded a 14th-century account of a “very good wine of sugar” from an area that became modernday Iran. Rum was also found in a tin bottle onboard the doomed Swedish ship Vasa that sank in 1628.

The word “riviera” conjures images of palm-fringed beaches, clear blue skies, magnificent hotels, unique dining and entertainment, yachts hugging marinas, and perhaps even glamorous casinos. A playground for the rich and famous, or those who aspire to those heights. It speaks to an exceptional climate, comfort, and a sought-after quality of life. Riviera has acquired a widely accepted meaning in our collective conscience, and at last count, there are more than two dozen rivieras in the world. You will find an Albanian, Brazilian, Mexican, and even a Chinese Riviera. The success of such regions is held together by well-developed tourism strategies and structures, and now it is Thailand’s turn! Riviera Thailand became a reality in March 2018 when the Thai Cabinet announced a 20-year master plan covering short, medium, and long-term tourism development plans encompassing Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, and Ranong Provinces. The concept focuses on developing land and marine-based sustainable tourism activities and strengthening the economy of secondary cities and communities within these regions. Break out your Cabana wear and turn to page 62 to learn where your Riviera adventure will begin. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue. We hope you enjoy the read.

Find your tiny drink umbrellas, pour yourself a daiquiri, and turn to page 38 to learn more about this spirit’s fascinating history.

HOT AROUND CHIANG MAI

137 Pillars Hotels & Resorts Partners With The Elephant Nature Park Chiang Mai Elephants are the national symbol of Thailand and represent strength, loyalty, endurance and intelligence. These magnificent animals have a long history in Thai society and many locals believe that walking under one will bring you luck. The white elephant which is more pink in colour, signifies royalty in the Kingdom. According to Buddhist tradition, on the eve of Buddha’s birth, his mother dreamed she was given a lotus flower by a white elephant. The Elephant Nature Park (ENP) is a rescue and rehabilitation sanctuary in Chiang Mai and was founded by Ms Sangduen Chailert (K. Lek) in 1996 who still runs it today. K. Lek is affectionately known as the Elephant Whisperer. She has dedicated her life to this important work and has a deep connection with each of the animals under her care. There are currently 130 rescued elephants at the park (as of July 2021) as well as a number of rescued cats, dogs, buffaloes and other

22

HOT Magazine

species which they also care for. Six baby elephants have been born since the park opened. Part of their mission statement includes reforestation and since the park opened, over 100,000 trees have been planted in the Mae Taeng forest area where the park is located. The partnership came about when Anne Arrowsmith, Corporate General Manager for 137 Pillars Hotels & Resorts, was asked to showcase some of the unique aspects of Chiang Mai for a Thailand segment on The Today Show with Hoda and Jenna – a popular morning TV show in the USA. Anne chose the ENP because of its authentic ethos and because it doesn’t allow the elephants to be ridden. What she thought would be a day’s filming turned out to be a very spiritual experience as she met several of the elephants and interviewed K. Lek for the programme. Anne wanted to share this deeply meaningful, authentic experience with her hotel guests and to

create a long-term partnership with the park to raise money to support the important work that K. Lek and her team do on a daily basis. Launching on World Elephant Day, 12 August 2021 , 137 Pillars Hotels & Resorts will offer guests at both hotels an option to donate to ENP on check in with either a nominal amount of TBH100, 300 or 700 per night as they choose (based on 137 Pillars name) or a larger one-off donation if they prefer. 90% of donations will go to elephant conservation and 10% to reforestation. ENP will send a receipt and certificate to each donor. Built in the late 1800’s 137 Pillars House once served as the headquarters for the Borneo Company who logged teak out of the jungle using elephants. While today both deforestation and using elephants in this manner are deeply inappropriate, sadly at the time this was not only acceptable but welcomed in the name of progress.

HOT AROUND CHIANG MAI “It seems very appropriate that we should form this long-term partnership with ENP to raise funds for the rescue and protection of these magnificent animals and to help to raise global awareness of the need to do so, as well as to be involved in reforestation of the area”, said Anne Arrowsmith, Corporate General Manager. A comprehensive booklet on the partnership and ENP’s work, including stories on two recent elephant rescues will be placed in each suite in Bangkok and Chiang Mai which guests are able to keep as a souvenir. A themed thank you gift will be given to all donors and elephant themed souvenirs will be available in the boutique, from which proceeds will be donated. Guests can choose from a range of tours and experiences at ENP from a half day to full day which include the following activities: Skywalk ‘Hands Off’ Area: Watch the herd of rescued elephants roam freely as they socialize, eat and play in their natural surroundings including the nearby river, custom built pools

and mud pit (who doesn’t love a mud pit). Observe the Herd: Take a walk around the park and observe the elephants in their chosen herds and learn about their stories and special needs.

What to Bring: One small day pack per person with a hat, sunscreen, sturdy walking shoes, camera, bug repellent, refillable water bottle, (rain jacket in the green season, May - October).

What’s Included:

Lunch: Enjoy a delicious and varied vegetarian lunch including Asian and Western delights.

Vegetarian lunch, return road transfers, admission fees and park tour guide.

Elephant Bathing: Walk with your tour guide and the elephants to the river that borders the park and watch these gentle giants from the river bank as they splash around and play.

Observe Interaction: Observe the elephants socializing in their herds and playing in the mud pit or covering themselves with sand after bathing in the river. Visit Rescued Animals: Visit the Dog Project and learn about our rescued dogs and our dog adoption program. Visit Cat Kingdom and learn about our rescued cats. South East Asia yacht charter ticks all the boxes. Easy to reach, calm waters, delightful locals, and magnificent seas under tropical skies. It is a yacht charter paradise and a long-established favourite corner of the world for connoisseurs of this unique combination of luxury, relaxation, and privacy. Yacht Charters have experienced a surge in popularity since we were introduced to Covid in 2020. When chartering a yacht, you can design a

bespoke holiday and share it with your family and friends in your own healthy bubble. One of the most excellent yachts available for charter in this corner of the world is the Phuket-based Ocean Emerald. Launched in 2009, the 41 metre, (135 foot) Ocean Emerald broke all the rules when it came to boat design. Legendary British architect Lord Norman Foster designed her, and he is known for not doing conventional. The man

has given the world such landmark buildings as London’s 30 St. Mary Axe, better known as the “Gherkin,” the spaceship-like Apple campus in Cupertino, California, and the ocean liner-style Yacht Club de Monaco. Nigel Plaskett, Ocean Emerald’s current owner, has had her for eight years. During that time, he’s overseen two full interior refits using local Thai artisans. The last one, carried out in 2019, saw the interior go ultra-modern to match the Yacht’s dramatic exterior.

Ocean Emerald features five elegant suites that can accommodate up to 12 guests. Each of the spacious suites onboard boasts a stylish and sophisticated design, complete with en-suite bathrooms. The master suite is particularly noteworthy. Fulllength windows give way to two private balconies that maximize ocean views. The lower deck houses the two double bed VIP staterooms and two cabin rooms with Pullman beds. The Not So Secret History of Rum

L

ong before there was any other spirit crafted, distilled, and manufactured, there was rum. It is the first branded spirit ever made. An early version of rum dates back to antiquity. Beverages created by using the fermentation of sugarcane juice are believed to have first occurred in China and then found their way around civilization. The Malay people, using this technique, produced a drink called Brum thousands of years ago. And the guy who has had his hand in everything from pasta to ice cream,

Marco Polo, recorded a 14th-century account of a “very good wine of sugar” from an area that became modern-day Iran. In later years, rum production was recorded in Brazil in the 1620s, and in the doomed Swedish ship Vasa that sank in 1628, rum was found in a tin bottle. It is believed that the modern-day version of rum was first distilled on the sugarcane plantations of the Caribbean in the 17th century, specifically on the island of Barbados. The Portuguese discovered the island of Barbados,

naming the island after the lush and “bearded” trees that grew in abundance. It was later determined that the island had rich soil and ideal weather conditions for growing sugar cane. Plantation workers first discovered that molasses, a byproduct of the sugar refining process, could be made into alcohol by boiling it down multiple times to produce sugar crystals. By adding the distillation process, the impurities would be removed from the fermented liquid, and after some resting time in oak barrels, you would have rum.

Rum was called by many names like rumbullion and rumbustion (slang term for uproar), and the Barbadians once called it “kill-divil.” It was also called “Black Gold,” as the Barbadian molasses was so profitable and in high demand that it turned the main port in Bridgetown into one of the wealthiest ports in the world because of this home-grown product. After rum’s development in the Caribbean, the drink’s popularity spread to the North. Alcohol in its various forms - the stronger, the better - was the

great sustainer of eighteenth-century America, and Rum was King. It was estimated that colonists were downing, per man, woman, AND child, 3 Imperials (or 3 ¾ gallons) of rum per year. Apparently, it quelled the thirst that resulted from too much of that salted meat and fish that was in their diet. To support the demand for the drink, rum distilleries were created in the Colonies. The first was in 1664 in modern-day Staten Island, Boston in 1667, and then one in Rhode Island shortly after. The rum made in Rhode Island

was considered acceptable currency in Europe for a short time. Drinking rum became a part of the social fiber. While the act of drinking the spirit became an icebreaker for meeting new people, it oddly became a political tradition. When George Washington ran for the legislature in 1758, his agent gave out almost three Imperials of beer, wine, cider, or rum to every voter.

39

Washington was concerned about the extent of this hospitality, fearing his agent might have been too stingy by only providing three Imperials. Washington continued to use rum to his political advantage after the American Revolution by insisting on having a barrel of rum at his 1789 inauguration. Rum became a litmus test for politicians. Though the candidates, like Washington, continued to use rum to influence the outcome, it was really a win if the candidates drank rum with the people. It demonstrated their political independence and an example that they are “one of the people.” Barbados, and other Caribbean islands recognizing the advantage of molasses for the Colonies, and sugar for the Europeans needed a large labor force. The ugly answer became known as the triangular trade, which involved moving slaves, molasses, and rum between Africa, the Caribbean, the Colonies, and sometimes Europe. This trade route was incredibly profitable, and it continued to provide the Colonies with the molasses they were demanding in order to create the rum. Historians have even argued that it was not the tax on Tea that pushed the colonists to war but the Molasses Act of 1733. The British imposed Molasses Act placed a heavy tax on sugar and molasses coming from anywhere except the British sugar islands in the Caribbean (not Barbados). Another result of the Molasses Act was that it gave way to homegrown drinks like American whiskey, which were not taxed by the British.

Rum was also a favorite of the British Royal Navy. Until 1740, rum had rarely been dispensed “neat” or without any mixtures. The first commander to dilute the ration was British Admiral Edward Vernon, nicknamed “old grog” due to the grogram cloak he wore in rough, wet weather. Vernon’s nickname became associated with the now “watered” down rum, called grog. This change in how rum was served was for a few valid reasons; it would limit the “grogginess” the sailors exhibited from consumption, and more importantly, it was a way to prevent scurvy. The addition of water, and lemon juice, minimized the overall effect on the soldiers and provided a significant health benefit. Every man’s daily ration of grog was half a pint, to be drank at his leisure. By the 19th cen-

tury, the British substituted the lemons with limes, believing (incorrectly) that limes were better than lemons for scurvy. The British sailors given the “grog” soon received the nickname by the American’s as “limeys.” Until 1970, The Royal Navy continued to give its sailors a daily rum ration, known as a “tot” or a “totty.”

ity ownership of liquor conglomerate Remy Cointreau, the island proudly continues to showcase this rum.

Today, most of the world’s rum production occurs in the Caribbean, Latin America, South Pacific, Asia, and North America. However, it is still on the easternmost island in the West Indies, which lays claim to the oldest existing rum distillery globally, Mount Gay Rum. On February 20, 1703, the Mount Gay Rum Company was established on the Caribbean island of Barbados. Though it is now under the major-

Appleton Rums have been in production continuously since 1749, and the sugar plantations used to produce the molasses used in the rum have been harvested since the 1600s. In total, the estate, including the sugar plantations, refinery and distillery spread over 11,000 acres in the Nassau terroir, a unique weather, soil and geographic area that produces the unique flavor of the rum.

Another Caribbean island proud of their rum is Jamaica, Their Appleton Estate Rum is the flag bearer for Jamaican spirits and is widely recognized as being among the best rum’s across the planet.

Another very popular brand of rum is Bacardi, founded in the 1800s by Spanishborn Facundo Bacardí Massó, whose family immigrated to Cuba when he was 16. Facundo developed a proprietary strain of yeast that gave Bacardi its clean flavor profile, filtered it through charcoal to remove impurities, and aged the rum in white oak barrels to mellow it. The result was the first clear, or “white,” rum in the world. Facundo opened a small distillery with his brother-in-law, marking the beginning of Bacardi’s history. The years to follow were turbulent times for the citizens of Cuba, with the Cuban War of Independence in the 1880s and 1890s. Facundo’s eldest son, Emilio, was imprisoned and exiled for fighting in the rebel army against Spain. The women of the family were exiled to Jamaica. Starting in 1912, after the United States occupation of Cuba, the company expanded with bottling plants in Barcelona and New York City. When prohibition struck the United States in the 1920s, Cuba became a hotspot for American tourists who could enjoy Bacardi’s rum freely. Bacardi continued to be passed down as a family business through three generations and moved its headquarters to Havana in 1930. The rum’s popularity continued to grow, forever associating Cuba with rum and Bacardi in particular. It expanded globally to Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the United States.

When Fidel Castro’s Cuban Revolution took hold of the island in the 1960s, Bacardi managed to hide its proprietary formula, trademark, and assets in the Bahamas. Eventually, it moved its operation to Puerto Rico and Mexico. The company is one of the largest privately held, family-owned spirits companies in the world. Originally known for its eponymous Bacardi white rum, it now has a portfolio of more than 200 brands and labels. Family-owned for seven generations, Bacardi Limited employs more than 7,000 people and in 2020 sold 160 million liters of spirits in approximately 170 countries. Rum has many fans around the world. One who is well known globally is Desmond Tutu. It was Desmond who once pined, “I wonder whether they have rum and Coke in Heaven? Maybe it’s too mundane a pleasure, but I hope so -- as a sundowner. Except, of course, the sun never goes down there. Oh, man, this heaven is going to take some getting used to.”

hailand is well known as a tropical island paradise. Koh Phi Phi, Koh Chang, Koh Lipe are just a few of the stunning tropical islands Thailand has on offer. For snorkelers and scuba divers however, one of the very best spots within Thailand is Mu Koh Surin. Famous for its coral gardens and white beaches, the Surin Islands are one of the world’s most renowned diving and marine life viewing sites and no doubt one of the best in Thailand. The islands are within Mu Ko Surin National Park. The Surin Islands are an archipelago of five islands within Mu Ko Surin National Park in Phang Nga Province. The islands are 55 km off the coast, 100 km north from the Similan Islands in the Andaman Sea, and just 18 km from the oceanic border of Myanmar. The national park covers an area of 135 km², of which 76% is water. The main islands are Ko Surin Nuea and Ko Surin Tai, which are only 200 meters apart. The corridor between both islands is shallow and a popular place for snorkeling. The other three small islands are Ko Ri, Ko Khai, and Ko Klang.

The islands are one of the very few untouched places in Thailand. Diving and snorkelling are the main activities on the islands. The best time for diving is around December to April, when the wind is minimal, and the average water temperature is around 29 °C. Snorkels and lifejackets are available for rent from the visitor center of the park. The shallow and deep waters around the islands allow seeing some of the most impressive marine species in Southeast Asia. Barracudas, blacktip reef sharks, olive ridley sea turtles, giant morays, and boxfish are just a few. Although sightings are rare, February to April is ideal for spotting large pelagic species like manta rays and whale sharks. There are currently around 100 known bird species reported from Surin Islands. Some of the rare birds of Thailand recorded from the islands are; Swinhoe’s storm petrels, parasitic jaegers, beach thick-knees, brown noddies, large green pigeons, & greatbilled herons.

RIVIERA

THAILAND

T

he word ‘riviera’ conjures images of palm-fringed beaches, clear blue skies, magnificent hotels, unique dining and entertainment, yachts hugging marinas and perhaps even glamorous casinos. A playground for the rich and famous, or those who aspire to those heights. It speaks to an exceptional climate, comfort, and a sought-after quality of life. An Italian word, riviera, evolves from the Latin Riparia, meaning “shore.” The subtropical Mediterranean coastline from Cannes in southern France to La Spezia in Italy are the original Rivieras

62

HOT Magazine

attracting travellers since the 19th century. Riviera has acquired a widely accepted meaning in our collective conscience, and at last count, there are more than two dozen “rivieras” in the world. You will find an Albanian, Brazilian, Mexican, and even a Chinese Riviera. The success of such regions is held together by well-developed tourism strategies and structures. Now it is Thailand’s turn! “Riviera Thailand” became a reality in March 2018 when the Thai Cabinet

announced a 20-year master plan covering short, medium and long term tourism development plans encompassing Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, and Ranong Provinces. The concept focuses on developing land and marine-based sustainable tourism activities and strengthening the economy of secondary cities and communities within these regions. With road and rail transportation as the model, development projects focus on quality, standard transportation routes, giving tourists easy access to communities and attractions within

these regions. “Riviera Thailand” is hoped to present a distinctive image. One focused more on the high-end travellers in the global market, looking to explore more unique and emerging regions of Thailand’s tourism offer. Three zones were laid out under the original Riviera Thailand concept, first proposed by the Thaksin Shinawatra administration in 2004. The first features high-end attractions within 50 km of Hua Hin airport. The second concerns the natural tourism spots within 100-200 km of Prachuap Khiri Khan. The third concerns areas for water activities between

Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon. Chumphon being the northern gateway to Ko Tao, Ko Pha Ngan, Ko Samui, and that region’s Marine National Parks. Projects under the current government’s plan involve constructing a 680 km road along the coastline, including bike lanes, connecting the northern gulf coast regions just south of Bangkok through to Ranong on Thailand’s west coast. Projected to be completed in five years, government sources suggest about 200 kilometres of the road is finished with a further 49 km stretch under construction.

Meanwhile, the 420 km dual-track railways from Nakhon Pathom (immediately west of Bangkok) to Chumphon is well underway. Indeed, the new lines and required additional infrastructure from Nakhon Pathom to Prachuap Khiri Khan is already 85% complete. Prachuap Khiri Khan to Chumphon is slightly behind schedule though still at 70% completion. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) expects to have the line fully operational by January 2023.

HOT Magazine

63

The new dual-track trains are expected to travel at approximately 160 km/h, meaning people can easily reach Hua Hin from Bangkok’s soon to open Bang Sue Grand Central Station in less than three hours. Significantly improving on current travel times of 5-6 hours or more. Travelling on to Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon will also be a breeze. Train travel south from Bangkok will soon become more appealing and present a desirable and hassle-free alternative to road travel with similar travel times. Ultimately the dual-track train lines will extend from Chumphon to Surat Thani, Songkhla and then onto Padang Besar on the Malaysian border. A fast, efficient and comfortable overnight train trip from Bangkok to the Malaysian border will soon be a happy reality. Hua Hin’s airport is also seeing significant investment with the widening of the runway to allow narrow-body jets, such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, to operate out of the airport. A new taxiway will accommodate five of these aircraft types simultaneously. Additionally, the already under construction new passenger terminal would allow the airport to handle a maximum of 900 passengers an hour, equivalent to 2.6 million annually.

64

HOT Magazine

Post-COVID, the resumption of domestic flights plus the potential for short-haul international flights becomes much more manageable. Further expansion is planned, which would open Hua Hin airport to longer international flights (4 to 7 hours) in the SE Asian region. Suitable though under-utilised infrastructure for the cruising yachts, recreational and commercial marine tourism is already established. Racer Marina in Pranburi, just south of Hua Hin, and Chumphon Marina in the Chumphon province provide modern facilities in anticipation of this aspect of Riviera Thailand gaining momentum.

HOT Magazine

65

It could be said that Riviera Thailand is a grand and perhaps overly ambitious project. With natural attractions including seven highly valued National Parks within the region, and a coastline boasting an abundance of bays and glorious beaches, many free from any tourism development, there is a lot of ‘raw’ potential. Quality resort and tourism infrastructure, especially between Cha-Am and the coastal region of Sam Roi Yod just south of Hua Hin, already welcome domestic and international visitors. Recreational facilities, including eight international standard golf courses, add to Hua Hin’s long list of pluses. Not to mention modern shopping and medical facilities, it is hard to pinpoint what’s missing.

66

HOT Magazine

It may be challenging to imagine Riviera Thailand ever matching the international appeal and pull of the French or Italian Riviera. Nonetheless, with the already planned infrastructure coming to fruition in the next few years plus excellent already established facilities centred around Hua Hin, along with the ‘raw’ potential of the coastal communities south to Chumphon and across to Ranong, Riviera Thailand could prove to be an exceptional playground in its own right in coming years.
