elcome to Issue 8 Volume 7. Known as the hardest trophy to win, the Asian Yachting Grand Prix kicked off with the Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Race Week, taking place from July 17th to the 21st. Over 450 sailors, families and friends from more than 20 countries made Cape Panwa Hotel their home as they participated in this year’s sailing event. Just two hours from Kuala Lumpur you’ll find the charming city of Meleka, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Up until 2017 the city was known as Malacca. Silk and porcelain from China, camphor from Borneo, nutmeg, cloves and mace from the Moluccas (The Spice Islands), sandalwood from Timor, gold and pepper from Sumatra, tin from western Malaya, and calico and other textiles from India. This was Malacca of the fifteenth century. Our “Let’s Go” this month takes us to modern-day Melaka, with two sizable modern shopping centres and international brand hotels like Ramada, Hilton, Novotel and Holiday Inn plus many others. Recreational facilities include modern amusement parks and three international standard golf courses. exican cuisine can be hard to define. Visit Guadalajara on the country’s west coast, or the central-southern region of Oaxaca sitting on the foothills of the Sierra Madre, or the Yucatán Peninsula in south-eastern Mexico where the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico meet, and differences in cuisine will be clearly evident. All worthy of exploration! Interestingly, the Mexican cuisine most of us know is the food originating from southern Texas and neighbouring northern Mexico. This cuisine, now commonly known as Tex-Mex, is rooted in the Tejano culture (Texans of Spanish or Mexican heritage who lived in Texas before it became a republic) along with Mexican immigrants from Northern Mexico. We’re talking the 1870’s. This style of food spread across the US and until the 1970s, most people referred to it as ‘Mexican’. For those of us living in other parts of the world, this was most probably, the ‘Mexican’ we also grew up with. There is differences between the cuisines of Mexico and the Tex-Mex of the southern United States and thankfully for us, both are tasty and worth discovering! The excellent news for anybody craving ‘Mexican’ food in Hua Hin is, there is an exceptionally convenient option. Taco 94 – which has been providing excellent Tex-Mex style food to Hua Hin locals and visitors for two years now. Here’s what we enjoyed when visiting recently. Restaurant manager and the man behind the Bar at Taco 94 is Khun Akraset (or Noo for short) who ensured we started our Taco 94 journey with suitable Mexican classics - Margaritas and Mojitos. Corona beers are also available. If you want to go down the Tequila path, the bar stocks KAH brand, which is distilled from 100% blue agave into three lively options - Blanco, Reposado, Añejo. These awardwinning tequilas come from the city of Tequila in the Jalisco region of Mexico. The distinctive skull-shaped bottles are treasures in themselves.

And what could and should accompany a refreshing drink in most ‘Mexican’ restaurants, corn chips with salsa or guacamole and that’s how our time at Taco 94 kicked off. Australian and New Zealand avocadoes are all they use and not softened and stretched by sour cream or such additives. Just great tasting authentic guacamole.
Of the more substantial dishes offered in the menu, we tried a Chicken Taco Grand Salad which is a fried tortilla in the shape of a small bowl filled with chicken and topped with fresh lettuce, tomato, cheese and served with Taco 94’s homemade salsa. Light in texture yet the crunchy tortilla contrasted well with the fillings and was a delight.
Other starters or snack style dishes include Quesadillas (beef, chicken, pork, or vegetarian options of corn and cheese) or Nachos topped with beans, jalapenos, cheese and homemade salsa. Our party chose a serve each of the Tacos – softshell with pork, and the hard shell with beef. To accompany, each table has small bottles of both Tabasco and Spicy Sauces. Both sauces are made in house and ideal seasonings for you to add to taste.
The Burrito, a flour tortilla filled with rice, beans, and a choice of lamb, beef, chicken or pork is folded into a rectangular package and topped with a red mole (sauce) and cheese. Our pork burrito was delicious, as was the Chimichanga. Once again, a wrapped burrito with the same option of fillings and then quickly deep-fried and served with a salad garnish. The Chimichanga was new to me and as the staff tell it, is exceptionally popular with regular guests.
HOT Magazine
The crowning glory for our party was the beef Fajitas. A sizzling metal platter with barbecued and sliced beef served of a bed of grilled onions and peppers and accompanied by servings of homemade Mexican rice and beans, plus cheese and fresh tortillas ready for you to mix your own particular concoction. Taco 94’s homemade Spicy Sauces fit in perfectly here. Other choices for the Fajita filling include pork, chicken or shrimp. If making choices is hard for you, or you are new to ‘Mexican’ food, the Taco 94 menu offers four Combo options for two people. Each combo has three dishes with prices starting at 549 THB. For desserts, the menu offers freshly cooked pancake with vanilla ice-cream. With so many dishes to choose from on the savoury side of the menu, it’s hard to find room for dessert. Unlike many Tex-Mex restaurants that are part of a franchise chain, Taco 94 is the work of local Khun ‘Eang’ Phutthachat. It was her love of Tex-Mex style food plus the desire to create a venue that she would be happy to take family and friends to, that was the catalyst for this venture. Khun Eang threw herself into learning the intricacies of Tex-Mex, testing the recipes on her husband and other family and friends. After three months of trials and tests, owner Eang finally felt she had developed a menu she was happy with and set about opening her dream restaurant. Two years on and Taco 94 is well established, and a new expanded menu is now in place. Taco 94 currently operates six days a week from 10 am to 11 pm and is closed Sundays. It’s developed a reputation as an ideal venue for birthday parties and other group events given the sharing nature of the food, the fun, relaxed environment, and the inside and outside seating options. ver 450 sailors, families and friends from more than 20 countries made Cape Panwa Hotel their home as they participated in the Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek, 17 – 21 July. Tourism Authority of Thailand, Sports Authority of Thailand, Phuket Yacht Club and the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand. The event is in its sixteenth year. Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek comprises four days of world-class yacht racing and four nights of beachside parties. Phuket Raceweek has gained a reputation for its competitive racing for the seasoned boat crews
and moderate courses around islands for the less experienced racers. It is also the first event of the prestigious 2019/20 AsianYachting Grand Prix. A total of thirty-five boats over six classes including IRC, multihull, charter and one-design classes competed in this year’s event. Competitors on Day One were greeted with glorious blue skies and sunshine, but this was quickly replaced
by building ominous clouds over Phuket island's southeast corner, and as competitors boarded their yachts for the first day of racing the heavens opened. Shifting, gusty winds, and low visibility around the southeast coast, sprinkled with some thunder, forced Race Management's hand. With safety in mind, crew and boats were sent back to shore to wait it out. Despite a
few near-dry moments and glimmers of sun, the conditions remained unconducive to racing. At 13:00, Race Management called Day One to a close. Not the start to racing they were hoping for. Anticipation was high for the start of Day Two as the dark clouds started to lift, and the sky cleared. It didn't last too long, sadly, as Race Management call competitor onshore while they
went out to look at the options. Once racing did get underway, the oscillating winds and near two-metre swells, where the wind direction was different from the track of the storm made the day challenging for all. Wave surfing and near broaches kept competitors on their toes while Race Management worked hard to set a race for all and officially get the 2019 Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek underway.

Day Three saw multiple races, putting smiles on competitors faces, and ensured Phuket Raceweek was back on track. IRC Zero, IRC I, IRC II and Firefly 850 completed three races while Multihull Racing completed two and Cruising Monohulls one. The unusually wet and stormy conditions at the regatta so far have caught many by surprise and Day Three was payback for all the hard work the on-water Race Management team had done, getting in some fair racing for all the classes. A final day of action wrapped up the 2019 Phuket Raceweek, and it will go down as one of the most challenging yet – challenging for sailors, Race Management and organisers. Despite those challenges, all classes got in a series of up to seven races. A steady 8-10 knots on the final day delivered an excellent finish to the regatta, with many titles going down to the wire. Race results for all classes can be found at: phuketraceweek.com/results. After the many challenges presented during the week, the 16th edition of Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek wrapped up with a lavish beachfront party presided over by Admiral Naris Pratoomsuwan, President of the Yachting Racing Association of Thailand, and hosted by Cape Panwa Hotel. As mentioned earlier, the Phuket Raceweek is the first event of the prestigious 2019/20 AsianYachting Grand Prix. A total of twelve regattas make up the Grand Prix with the point scoring system recognising the “six best regattas scores” to count towards competitors final results.

piled high with goods clatter off to the bustling market stalls and warehouses. The Sultanate’s Harbour Masters keep a keen watch to ensure taxes are suitably collected. This is a trading port of great prosperity. Strategically positioned at the top of the narrow Straits separating Sumatra and the Malayan peninsula and midway along the trade routes between China in the east and India,
Arabia and Africa. Melaka’s colonial story started in the early 1500s when the Portuguese took control of this trading port from the
Sultanate rulers. The Dutch deposed the Portuguese in 1641 and held sway until ceding to the British in the AngloDutch Treaty of 1824. Excluding a period of Japanese occupation during WW2, Britain controlled Malaysia until granting independence on 31st August 1957. The colonial remnants and the rich history of the Portuguese and Dutch forts and settlements are sufficient reason for visitors to add Melaka to
their Malaysia travel itinerary. In fact, the historical city centre achieved a UNESCO World Heritage Site listing in July 2008, recognising it’s cultural importance. Perched on the southern banks of the Melaka River the historic old town is easily walked with key sights within three square kilometres. The Dutch Square is an ideal starting point, with its clocktower, central fountain, and Christ Church. Painted terracotta red,
Christ Church started life in 1753 as a Dutch Reformed church and then under the British became an Anglican church. Church services continue to happen every Sunday. Overlooking the square, the imposing Stadthuys, formerly the official residence of Dutch governors, is believed to be the oldestsurviving Dutch building in the East and now operates as a museum.

Atop the hill behind Stadthuys lie the ruins of an even older church, St. Paul’s. Built in 1521 and enlarged in stages in the 16th century, it’s the oldest church building in Malaysia. When the Dutch took control, they continued using it as a place of worship until Christ Church in the town below was completed. It has lain in ruins for more than 150 years. In and around the church are Portuguese, Dutch and British headstones with the oldest dating back to 1568. In front of St Paul’s is a statue of Francis Xavier, a Jesuit missionary who is said to have brought Catholicism to India and the Far East. It’s also possible to experience the old city from the Melaka River through popular river cruises, and riverside walkways. The magnificent Maritime Museum including the replica of the Portuguese ship ‘Flor de la Mar’ makes it easier to imagine the old port in its heyday.

Across the Melaka River from the Dutch Square is where other communities set up residence and commerce. Centred around the three streets that lead away from the river is an area now known as Melaka’s Chinatown. Wander the streets of Chinatown and marvel at the historic houses dating back to the 17th century. Many are now cafes, restaurants, retail shops, galleries, antique emporiums, museums, and guest houses. Over the weekend evenings, the central street becomes the now-famous Jonker Walking Street and night market, attracting crowds who come to savour Melaka’s renowned street food while shopping for trinkets and souvenirs. Chinese have a long history in Melaka dating back to the Sultanate in the 1400s. At the beginning of the 16th century, other Chinese merchants and entrepreneurs were lured to Melaka’s
shores. These fortune seekers went on to marry local Malay women with descendants of these marriages known as Peranakan or ‘Straits-born Chinese’. Members of this community address themselves as Baba (men) and Nyonya (women). The Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum in Chinatown is a great place to learn more about the Peranakan and see first-hand, the very prosperous lives they created. Peranakans developed their own unique cuisine called Nyonya, and this is seen in Singapore, Melaka and Penang where the ‘Straits-born Chinese’ prospered. It’s a mix of Chinese ingredients with Malaysian and Indonesian spices. Signature ingredients include coconut milk, laksa leaves, lemongrass and tamarind. Melaka offers many opportunities to experience Nyonya food, thanks to a great selection of authentic restaurants. You can even delve further into Nyonya cuisine with a cooking class.

Modern-day Melaka is much more than its UNESCO world heritage listed old city, with two sizable modern shopping centres and international brand hotels like Ramada, Hilton, Novotel and Holiday Inn plus many other Malaysian and Asian brand accommodation houses. Recreational facilities include modern amusement parks and three international standard golf courses including the Orna Golf & Country Club, one of Malaysia's most challenging. Melaka is seen as an ideal weekend or short-break destination thanks to easy access from Kuala Lumpur (150 km); the southern Malaysian city of Johor (a 220 km trip); and neighbouring Singapore (250 km away). This also means that weekends are not the best time to visit if wanting to avoid crowds. AirAsia has also just commenced direct daily flights between Melaka and Penang, making it even easier to experience two of Malaysia’s most popular cities in one trip. Like many Asian cities (Hong Kong, Singapore, Johor and Penang), land reclamation has happened along Melaka city’s coastline. These years of land reclamation and expansion mean the current shoreline is approximately one kilometre further into the Straits from the original colonial-era shore, which was just some 200 meters from the Dutch Square. One of the significant new developments is ‘Melaka Island’ involving the reclamation of two small islands just 500 meters of the current shoreline to create the 200 acres ‘Melaka Gateway’ tourism and housing development. One ‘must visit’ attraction already open on the island is the architecturally inspiring and very photogenic Melaka Straits Mosque. For me, as a first-time visitor, having enthusiastically dived into Melaka’s captivating history, I left feeling a slight disconnect between that past, though well celebrated and presented, and the Melaka of today. This could possibly be due to a loss of connection with the sea through Melaka’s changing shoreline. That said, I’m glad I took the time to visit, explore and experience, and recommend you do as well! And for clarity, Malaysia’s government decreed on May 3rd 2017 that Malacca would from that day on be called Melaka, hence the use of both names in this article. By Michael Cullen

“concierge” came to stand for “keeper of the keys” at public buildings, particularly hotels. Nowadays the concierge is much closer to a luxury lifestyle manager, seeing that travelers and hotel guests get the absolute most out of their stay. Possibly the best-known luxury concierge in the world, ‘Quintessentially’ was set up in 2000, and now has offices in 63 cities globally and 33 sister companies that provide an intricate network of access to the world's most exclusive brands and experiences. The brainchild of Ben Elliot, Paul Drummond and Aaron Simpson, the company’s expert fixers have fulfilled a plethora of extravagant requests over the years, from closing the Sydney Harbour Bridge for a proposal, to arranging dinner on an iceberg. It’s no surprise that the client list sways towards the A-list, with the average net worth of Quintessentially clientele ranging from £5-50 million. Along with its less expensive rival, Velocity Black, the company promises all the spontaneity and bragworthy experiences any One-Percenter could want. “It’s fun to say, ‘Oh yeah, we had dinner on an iceberg and a cocktail party at the Great Pyramids,’ said William Reedy, Quintessentially’s head

of U.S. concierge servicing and a former lifestyle manager himself. “It’s not cool just because it was really expensive, but because it was something no one had thought you could do.” “When this company started, the idea was that there will be a magical phone number that could do anything for you,” said Robbie Guevarra, the company’s U.S. marketing manager. “If you knew the number, you were in the club. And if you didn’t, you weren’t.” Today, your membership comes with not only that phone number but the email address of at least one lifestyle manager in a major city. From there, Guevarra said, “We fulfill anything that’s legal. We basically do anything and everything under the sun.” The winner of some of the world's most prestigious travel and concierge awards such as Conde Nast's Best Concierge Company, the Leading Hotels of the World's Top Producing Agent and World Travel Awards' Europe's Leading Luxury Lifestyle
Club, Quintessentially is no stranger to the so-called cream of the crop. Velocity Black is another force in the luxury concierge market, but its audience is younger—with an average age of 34 and a lower net worth, around $7 million. Velocity charges quite a bit less than Quintessentially, $2,800 a year with a $900 initiation fee. Founder Zia Yusuf, 32, said he’s trying to provide members something that’s usually elusive: spontaneity. Yusuf also places an emphasis on technology, saying that 40 percent of Velocity Black members open their app every day. “This isn’t an expensive country club membership that they use once a year,” Yusuf said. “This is something that is embedded in their day-to-day lives.” Some of the experiences Velocity Black connects members with are pretty wild. They include swimming with blue whales in Sri Lanka, flying a jet to the edge of space, or even a trip to the wreckage of the Titanic.

“We don’t just wait for you to tell us what you want,” he said. “We aspire to something greater, which is showing you things you didn't even know you wanted.” With that in mind, part of Velocity Black’s perks is the use of the LAX Private Suite (because you know, 2200 steps from the car to the plane is simply too much). The Private Suite is a newlybuilt private terminal — a new gate into LAX that’s far from the traffic surrounding the airport. Members of The Private Suite don’t wait in crowded lines because private TSA screening is done right in the building. Members don’t walk down long crowded concourses or line up at ticket counters and boarding gates. They don’t deal with baggage. And best of all, they don’t deal with paparazzi. Members spend their pre-flight time in totally private suites, each with its own bathroom, its own foodservice pantry, a two-person daybed, and a runway view of aircraft landing and taking off. When it’s time to board, Private Suite members are driven across the tarmac, Head-ofState style, directly to their aircraft in one of the company’s fleet of BMW 7 Series Sedan’s. (Bet you didn’t know you needed that) A growing economy in the hands of tech-savvy millennials, oversaturated with information at the touch of their smartphones and a lust for travel and individual experiences, are creating a niche in the luxury travel industry that wasn’t there before. Wealthy consumers have shifted behavioral trends in how they choose to spend their money when traveling. The definition of luxury is evolving, and the change applies to not only what people are spending money on, but how they're doing it. Exclusivity and personalization also play important roles in the way luxury experiences are marketed. Customers don't want just any experience — they want a unique one tailored to them.

A Conversation With Sonia "Pim" Couling When you look up “Over-Achiever in the dictionary you’ll find Sonia “Pim” Couling’s picture. Even at a young age Pim always had the desire to be the best at whatever she did. Born in Thailand to a Thai Mother and English Father, Pim started working as a professional model at age 13. Pim has been the face of L'Oreal Asia, Olay Asia & Clairol Shampoo Worldwide along with countless others. Earlier in her career the UK magazine FHM chose her as the number one sexiest woman in Thailand and second in Asia. She was the 1st Thai VJ for MTV Asia which launched her career into the pan-Asian stage. Acting was next with a show on HBO Asia, Challenger Muay Thai on AXN and she appeared on Jessica Simpson's show "Price of Beauty" as one of 6 worldwide beauty ambassadors on VH1. Pim has appeared in many Thai TV dramas as well as acting in feature films, both Thai and International. Pim also works behind the camera as a Producer. She is a pilot, has her own Polo team and speaks fluent Thai, English and French. In between her trips to Corsica and L.A., HOT Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down with Pim to discuss her amazing life’s trajectory.
HM: Pim, let’s start at the beginning, where were you born and what was your early childhood like? PC: I was born in Bangkok, moved around to various schools, in Asia, Singapore, Malaysia, where my dad was working at the time as an advertising executive. My early childhood : my mother was very strict, preferring my sister and I to do extracurricular activities outside of school, piano, tennis, horse-riding, dance, swimming… learning Thai, math, my mother kept us busy (smiles), something I hated when I was younger, but appreciated at a later stage in my life. HM: You went to an all-girls boarding school in England. At what age did you start, what was the experience like being away from your family in another country and do you have happy memories from that time in your life? PC: I started working at the age of 13, nonstop everyday after school. So, my mother decided for me to focus on my studies it was better to send me away from Thailand, to a boarding school at the age of 15. Little did she know, that I only cried for the first day, and had the time of my life from then on. I loved boarding school, it taught us a lot about independence, living amongst a community, people coming from various backgrounds and culture. I was also very popular having arrived

being the only professional model there. A lot of the girls looked up to me for fashion advice etc.. I was also very mischievous, escaping the school at night taking friends out and sneaking back in during the day, prim and polished as a perfect role model and Head of House. I was also voted the most popular girl in school receiving the most phone calls, gifts and flowers from boys in neighboring schools. I landed a contract at Storm Agency and was working weekends going back and forth to London and back and forth to Bangkok during school holidays, working back to back. HM: As a child you took up dancing and won many awards in jazz, tap and modern dance, before later taking up ballroom dancing, jive and salsa. Do you feel you had a natural talent for dancing or were your many accolades the culmination of much hard work and determination? Also, was it the dancing you enjoyed or the competition that came with it? PC: My mother encouraged us to do a lot of activities and dancing was a form of sport and exercise. I entered various competitions because I liked the challenge and wanted to see how far I could go, for my own personal satisfaction. I was not a natural dancer, per se, but I enjoyed putting in the work to accomplish what I set my goal for.

67
HM: Was it during this period that you decided you wanted to be in front of people performing or did you always know that is what you wanted? PC: I was already performing before I started doing dance, but I feel comfortable being in front of a crowd which made various studies like public speaking, something that came naturally for me. HM: At the age of 13 you began your modeling career with an advertisement for the soft drink 7-Up. How did that turn in your life come about? PC: I was scouted by a modeling agent in my school parking lot, landed the job immediately, and she became my manager for the most part of my career. My career was launched immediately as that was the first ever commercial for 7-up in Thailand.
68
HOT Magazine
Which meant my face was plastered on every wall and billboards all over the country. I was called ‘the 7-up girl’ HM: While in boarding school and then university in the UK, you worked with the Storm modeling agency in London landing ads for L'Oreal UK and you did many fashion spreads. Did you find modeling difficult or were you a natural with the camera? PC: From my first job with 7-up, I knew that it was something I enjoyed, and I felt that it just came very naturally to me being in front of the camera, I was not shy although I am more shy behind the camera. Being in front of the camera just took on another life and I loved the versatility HM: You graduated from the European Business School London (EBS London) with a Bachelor of
International Business. Was your plan to go into International Business or by this time had you already made the decision that modeling is what you wanted to do and International Business could wait until a later period in your life? How did your parents feel about your decision? PC: I actually wanted to major in graphic design, because I loved art and was very good at it, but my mother, being Asian, felt like it was not academic enough, so I took up international business with French and Italian, because I enjoyed learning the language more; Before EBS, I was at UCL (University College London) studying German literature, but left after two years because I realized that this degree would be pointless to me down the road and honestly, I could not stand reading another book in
German language (laughs). My father was always supportive in whatever decisions I would make. HM: Once back in Asia after finishing your studies, where did life take you? PC: As soon as I arrived back into Bangkok from London, I landed a job at MTV Asia based in Singapore. That launched my international career, traveling to many countries and doing hit shows like US TOP 20 and US TOP 10. The social life was part of the job, because MTV would also host concerts in various bars all over Asia. We were very spoiled, traveling business class and 5 stars hotels only and given many
body guards for our work. If only there was social media back in those days. My social life was working at night, and a few hours a day in the studio. Giving me plenty of time to appreciate my extra activities outside of work i.e. Horse riding, and beach parties HM: From modeling you transitioned into the world of acting appearing in countless Thai TV dramas and then into movies. Again, did acting come to you naturally or did you take classes? PC: Acting came to me fairly naturally but I had to take classes to act in the Thai shows as Thai dramas and international dramas required a
different style of performance. HM: You are also experienced working behind the cameras producing TV show’s such as Thailand's Next Top Model and internationally as the executive producer on the International film A Stranger in Paradise. Which work do you find most gratifying and enjoyable, acting or producing? PC: To be honest with you every job that I take on, being in front of the camera or behind the camera or any aspect of my life is something that I take as a challenge and gives me equal satisfaction to perform to the best of my abilities.

Has 2019 found you just as busy or are you taking more personal time for yourself? PC: The first half of this year, I decided to take a small break and focus on my family and travels for pleasure. Also, focusing on a personal business that I am planning to launch. Nevertheless, not disappearing totally from the limelight. HM: In addition to your show business life you are a pilot with a twin-engine rating. Who or what made you decide to get your pilot’s license, do you fly much and do you see jets in your future? PC: I started flying over 15 years ago, as a challenge from a male friend of mine. I was very much focused on beating all the boys, being just one of four girls in a class with 50 guys. I flew solo on my 13th hour, pilots will understand that. (smiles) I also had the privilege of being invited to ride in the F5 and F16 fighter jets of the Royal Thai Air Force, almost breaking the sound barrier, at 8.3 G HM: You are also a polo player. Have you always had a love of horses, was polo a natural progression and how long have you been playing? PC: I’ve always had a love for riding starting at the age of 6 and doing it on and off throughout my whole life. I took it up a lot more seriously 8 years ago, when I received my first horse as a gift from my loving husband. Polo I took up 4 years ago, after I moved my horse to a polo club and out of curiosity I wanted to try and fell in love with it immediately. Part of it again being the challenge and the competition that bring out the competitive side in me. I now have my own team and play tournaments as often as I can.

HM: As if all of that wasn’t enough to keep a girl busy, you are a wife and a mother. Tell us about this aspect of your life and do you see more children in your future? PC: Having my son was not an easy process, I couldn’t conceive naturally so we ended up using a surrogate mother. For now I am very happy to focus all my attention on him as this little monster can be rather demanding (smiles).
HM: Finally, to wrap up our conversation, can you tell us about your happiest day so far and what made it so? PC: The most joy filled moment of my life was the day my son was born. Having him in my arms and the unconditional love that was instantaneous. HM: Thank you Pim
HM: What advice would you give a young person who would like to emulate the life and accomplishments you have achieved? PC: The advice that I would give is a professional one, be polite, be on time, be professional, do your best and never give up.

棕榈山高尔夫俱乐部和住宅, 华欣的首要发展 作者:Russ Downing

Bumrungrad Health Briefs Kidney Stones: 7 Important Facts You Need to Know Kidney stones are well known for causing excruciating pain. But pain is just one aspect of this common medical condition. Here is a comprehensive look at seven important facts you need to know about kidney stones. 1. Cases of kidney stones have increased significantly. In the U.S., the prevalence of kidney stones has increased from a rate of about 5% of the population to nearly 10%. Having a family history of kidney stones increases a person’s risk for getting them. Men get kidney stones at about twice the rate as women. Infants and children get them, too. Nutrition and lifestyle changes are believed to be the main factors causing more kidney stones. 2. Dehydration encourages stones to form. Kidney stones are hard objects formed from concentrated amounts of salt, calcium and minerals that crystallize in the urine. Without enough liquid to excrete the salt, calcium and minerals out of the body through the urine, the kidney stones will grow in size. A kidney stone may remain in the kidney, where it won’t cause pain, or it can leave the kidney and move down the urinary tract into the ureter. 3. Hydration helps prevent kidney stones, and is a treatment too. Along with healthy nutrition habits, exercise and weight control, staying hydrated by drinking a sufficient volume of water helps prevent kidney stones from forming, and drinking water is often the most effective way to help the body excrete already-formed stones. 4. Look for these symptoms. In general, symptoms become more noticeable as the size of the kidney stone increases. The most common symptoms include: • Severe pain that comes in waves from one or both sides of the lower back • A stomach ache that doesn't resolve itself • Having blood in the urine
• Having frequent urges to urinate but producing very little urine • Nausea, vomiting • Fever, chills • Foul-smelling and/or cloudy urine 5. Without treatment, serious trouble may follow. Leaving the condition untreated can lead to complications such as blood in the urine and various types of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Not receiving proper treatment also puts you at greater risk for developing serious health problems later on, including kidney failure and chronic kidney disease (CKD). 6. Kidney stones tend to recur. Once you experience a first instance of kidney stones, your odds of having a future recurrence rise significantly. 7. There are numerous treatment options. Your doctor can choose from a wide range of kidney stone treatments, up to and including surgical removal. But the overall approach taken should be conservative. Other treatments can break the stone into pieces, and minimally invasive endoscopy techniques are capable of both locating the stone and then removing it. If you are uncertain whether your symptoms are serious enough to warrant seeing a doctor, use these two simple guidelines: 1. If you have blood in your urine, see a doctor; 2. If you experience severe pain, see a doctor. By Dr. Tatpong Chit-ua-aree, Kidney (Nephrology) specialist, Bumrungrad International Hospital
