Honoring the Men and Women on the Front Lines of the Epidemic

HEN THIS WHOLE CORONAVIRUS THING STARTED, I didn’t really think too much about it. It was something happening to people on the other side of the world, and I just really didn’t feel like I needed to be all that concerned about it. And then as it slowly made its way toward the US, I still didn’t worry too much about it because I figured that the people who are supposed to know how to take care of such things would, you know, take care of it. Well, as we all know, that did not happen. So as I started to hear about people here in Florida falling ill, see friends getting laid off from work, and having my own business ventures dry up, I felt only one thing: panic. I couldn’t believe this was really happening and I had no idea how I was going to go forward - or how I was going to stay at home for weeks (months?) on end without going completely crazy. As an artist, nothing soothes my nerves more than just illustrating, creating - it’s really a form of meditation for me. It’s the main reason I love what I do. I’m also something of a new junkie (aren’t we all right now?), and so one day as I was just sketching out some of my usual illustrations I heard one of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s press briefings on the virus. I was so inspired by his steady response to the unfolding crisis that I decided to draw a portrait of him to share with my friends on Facebook. One of them saw it, loved it, and suggested that I share more of my illustrations as a way of comforting people. With all the bad news out there, I nevertheless kept seeing amazing stories and figures, who sinpired me to create the series that you see here. I hope they comfort and inspire you as much as they did me! And while I know that more challenges lie ahead, I know that we can get through this together.

CORONAVIRUS CHAMPIONS

AUCI DR. ANTHONY

O

NE OF THE WORLD’S most accomplished infectious disease specialists long before the current crisis. The head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a member of the White House Coronavirus task force, Dr. Fauci is a public health hero who has led the agency through six presidents, both Republican and Democrat. One of the things I love most about him is his unwillingness to bend the facts or deny science to appease certain egos in the White House. I truly believe that by the time this pandemic is controlled, Dr. Fauci will emerge as one of the biggest heroes. Dr. Fauci has been at the forefront of the federal responses to a series of viruses that have threatened the nation, including Ebola and two previous coronavirus outbreaks, SARS and MERS. He reportedly works nearly 19 hours a day on the White House Coronavirus Task Force - at age 79!

“I’m not worried about myself,I’m worried about the job I have to do.” — DR. FAUCI, THE NEW YORK TIMES.

For Americans gripped with fear and confusion over the rapid spread of the coronavirus, Fauci have emerged as unexpected emotional life rafts. For many, they’ve also become primary sources of information on the pandemic. — MARKET WATCH

WORKERS

HEALTCARE

T

HE HEALTHCARE WORKERS of this country- “The world’s new heroes” - nurses, doctors, orderlies, physician’s assistants, emergency medical technicians, and others - who are on the frontline of this crisis, and we owe them all a debt of gratitude for putting their lives on the line each and every day during this crisis. Americans are just beginning to appreciate the courage and sacrifice of medical professionals -- a lesson the people of China, Italy and France have already learned. Hours of prolonged exposure to the sick leaves medical professionals sitting ducks to a virus that has no vaccine, and to which humans have no immunity. They are treating a menace that science barely understands.

The pandemic has turbocharged the cult of the medic. Now the Christ who dies for our sins is the health worker. There will also be more ancillary healthcare jobs, such as neighbourhood walk leader or geriatric playground monitor, and reserve guards of nurses and paramedics. Health services might even grow bloated and over-resourced, like the American military. Anyone arguing for spending cuts will be met with the retort, “Remember the coronavirus.” - FINANCIAL TIMES

HARD BELLY

HOT BODIES by Tom Bonanti

BEEF UP YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM WITH THESE MIGHTY FOODS

T

hese days new terms have entered our vocabulary very quickly. Certainly, “social distancing” and “selfisolation” are daunting, but effective concepts that will help eradicate the dreaded COVID19 over time. Washing your hands from elbow to fingernails repeatedly for a full 20 seconds throughout the day is a good practice always.

This critical period is also ideal for you to fortify your immune system against harmful cold and flu viruses. Besides getting plenty of fresh air and exercise, what you eat makes a difference. Strengthen you body with the following mighty foods. Eating more protein is a sure way to stay at the top of your game. Proteins are made up of amino acids. These compounds help turn T cells, B cells and antibodies in your immune system into germ fighters that spot and kill harmful cells that enter your body before they can start infection. Combine this fact with protein's abilities to boost metabolism, burn fat, decrease harmful LDL, reduce inflammation, and preserve and build lean muscle. Reach for healthy low-fat protein sources like cold water fish, lean poultry, and eggs. Remember that protein is also found in whole grains, fruit and vegetables. Here are some other common foods that

bolster your immune system: Broccoli contains vitamins A, C, and glutathione, all potent antioxidants. Eat it raw, steamed or cooked, or in soups and stews, or dip it in low-fat dressing as a snack.

Chicken soup, either your grandma's recipe or out of a can, this elixir is rich in protein, healthy fat, and it contains carnosine which helps protect your body from flu viruses. Garlic combats skin infections by fighting bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It's also effective at lowering your LDL, the bad cholesterol. Don't use salt or powder, go for the real stuff and use it heavily in soups, sauces, stir-fries, etc.

Spinach, eaten raw or cooked, contains folate which helps the body make new cells and repair DNA. It also contains fiber and vitamin C Sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene which the body turns into vitamin A, which in turn mops up free radicals, bolsters the immune system and may even stall the aging process! Wheat germ is the part of a wheat seed that feeds the baby wheat plant. It is rich in zinc, antioxidants, B vitamins, fiber, protein and healthy fat. Use this as a nutrient dense partial replacement for white flour in most recipes. Please stay healthy, take care of yourself and your loved ones, and we will make it through this difficult time stronger, healthier and wiser!

Ginger is a good source of antioxidants which fight free radicals (pesky toxins) in your system caused by stress, colds, viruses and poor nutrition. Skip sugary ginger ale and supplements and get it straight from the knobby root. Add the real thing grated to any food, or steep it in hot water to make tea. Low-fat yogurt contains pro-biotics that may ease the severity of colds. Look for labels that say “live” or “active” cultures. Add fruit or granola for added fiber and flavor. CUOMO

CORONAVIRUS CHAMPIONS

GOVERNOR ANDREW

OVERNOR ANDREW CUOMO who has been hailed as our ‘acting president’ for showing steady leadership, detailed plans and kick ass coronavirus press conferences. He has been calm, measured, and blunt where he needs to be (and, I might add, factual). As the pandemic has been spreading across the country, Cuomo has moved faster and more decisively than federal leaders. Contrast the blame shifting at the federal level with what Cuomo said when he announced New York’s stay-at-home restrictions... “If someone is unhappy and somebody wants to blame someone or complain about someone, BLAME ME,” he said. “There is no one else who is responsible for this decision.” I know that he is NOT perfect, who is? But boy oh boy, this man is doing what the federal government should be doing and hopefully inspiring other state and local leaders to follow suit. He has behaved the way a leader ought to behave in this time of crisis. And hardly a syllable of his presentations is about himself.

Cuomo makes an emotional connection with people around the same time that other politicians and social media users were starting to make the argument that a higher coronavirus death rate may be a necessary sacrifice to make for the health of the economy, the governor got nearly 74,000 retweets and 285,000 likes on a tweet stating, “My mother is not expendable. Your mother is not expendable. We will not put a dollar figure on human life.”

WORKERS GROCERY AND FOOD INDUSTRY

W

HETHER MANNING THE CHECKOUT AT your local Publix or taking to-go orders at your favorite local hangout turned delivery joint, the nation’s grocery and food industry workers have unexpectedly been thrust to the front line of the nation’s response to the pandemic. Overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated before the crisis, we should be thankful that they continue to show up for work despite the risk to themselves and their families. They really are the definition of an “essential” occupation during this crisis. The rest of us simply wouldn’t have the ability to hole ourselves up at home and “flatten the curve” were it not for them and their hard work. And when the crisis is over, let’s remember that they were here for us and appreciate and compensate them accordingly.

“We must recognize the commitment of clerks, stockers, cashiers, baggers, deli workers, cleaners, maintenance workers, warehouse personal, floor managers and management in general, at all our local grocery stores. A huge thank you for all you have done and continue to do during this extraordinary and critical time in our country. You are a credit to our community and are a shining example of perseverance and commitment to an overwhelming job that we often take for granted. Serving the public is at times, a difficult and thankless job, yet you carry on. Without you and your gallant efforts to help keep us fed we would not be able to cope. We appreciate what you do now, more than ever!” — PETER CLARK HOTSPOTS MAGAZINE

In these “times that try men’s souls,” there are unsung heroes among us. Journalists are those heroes. Journalists who work tirelessly to help us understand, to prepare, to think logically, to eliminate mindless chatter. Journalists who do their best to uncover the truth and help us behold it with fresh eyes. Journalists who often put themselves into the eye of the storm to get to the heart of the matter. — SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

After the dust from this virus has settled, I hope that those who in times past have labeled journalists’ work as “fake news” will show greater appreciation for their tireless reporting that is helping us to wake up as a nation, to prepare, to take care of ourselves and our neighbors —THE PUBLIC FORUM

JOURNALISTS

T

HEIR JOB HAS NEVER BEEN MORE VITAL. And while certain corners of the media seem to think that their role is in serving the interests of those in power no matter how much dangerous misinformation they amplify, the vast majority of America’s journalists know that their job is to hold power to account and to convey to the American people the information they will need to make it through this crisis. CNN’s Anderson Cooper, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, and PBS’s Yamiche Alcindor are just a few examples of journalists doing just that - along with the thousands of men and women in newsrooms across the country. Not only has the crisis made the availability of accurate information more necessary, its economic fallout represents a grave threat to the continued viability of countless newsrooms, many already under strain following years of revenue declines and budget cuts. Let’s just hope they’re able to survive the crisis. We’re going to need them when it’s over.

CORONAVIRUS CHAMPIONS

The Frivolist By Mikey Rox

6 Productive Ways to Spend Your Time During the Coronavirus Crisis

1

As we all hunker down to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus, here are a few ways you can cope and stay productive for sanity's – and humanity's – sake.

Take free online classes

2

Get a head start on your taxes

Your mediocre SAT scores may not have gotten you into the Ivy League school of your dreams (don't feel bad – mine didn't either), but the internet doesn't give a hoot about aptitude tests. You now can take online courses from the likes of Harvard, Columbia and Princeton, among other top institutions, without paying a dime or leaving the comfort of your home. More than 450 free courses are available in a collection on Class Central (classcentral.com), in categories that range from computer science and engineering to humanities and art and design. Learn about the United States health policy (which is more topical than ever in these wild times we're living in), take an intro to classical music, or brush up on Buddhism and modern psychology. You'll also find LGBTQ courses, including the titles “Queering Identities: LGBTQ+ Sexuality and Gender Identity” and “Monitoring the Human Rights of LGBTI Persons.”

The IRS is expected to postpone the tax deadline (that announcement was not made as of press time, however), but that doesn't mean you shouldn't use your time off to get your financial life in order. Doing it now will help avoid the crunch later, provide your accountant a head start before everyone makes their own mad dash, and it'll be one less burden hanging over your head during this already stressful time of extreme uncertainty. You likely won't get much assistance from library resources this year considering the wide-ranging closures, which is something to consider if that's help you typically rely on.

3

Hit some of your local trails and practice other self-care

Curfews have been instituted in several states already – and that practice shows no sign of slowing as COVID-19 continues to spread widely and rapidly. While social distancing has been encouraged, it doesn't mean you have to lock yourself in the house for the foreseeable future. There's always nature, and it'll do you good to get out and stay active so long as you're not spreading germs with person-to-person contact or congregating in groups of more than 10, per instructions from the White House. Take a private hike, clear your mind, and recognize that this temporary interruption in our lives is just that – temporary. Fresh air and sunshine will be necessary to fight the doom and gloom of news and social media. Other self-care to practice includes getting regular exercise, at-home facials, partner massages, meditation and yoga.

4

Update your resume and plan new goals

If you've been considering a career change, take this time to update your resume and set new goals. It may take a while for the economy to get back on track after this crisis has ended, but we will bounce back, and there's no reason you shouldn't be prepared to hit the ground running when we do.

5

Finish your home projects

Have any half-finished projects around the house? Most of us do. Grab what you need from the hardware store and get to work.

6

Unplug from all your devices a few hours every day

The worst way to spend your time during this recommended period of self-isolation is with your face buried in a phone or television while your hands are shoveling snacks. Constant inundation of negativity combined with inactivity will only make you feel worse – if not increase your paranoia – and nobody needs that. Limit yourself on screen time (sex apps are not the answer to your boredom right now, by the way), look around to see what you can accomplish in your safe space (a clean, organized home will immediately improve your mood – I promise), and resolve to focus on the positive. It may not seem like it on the surface, but there's still plenty of that left if you look for it right where you are.

The coronavirus pandemic has made one thing crystal clear: the unsung heroes in our society are the men and women at the frontlines, risking their health and safety to keep our country moving. They’re the health care professionals working around the clock to keep us healthy. The truck drivers and delivery workers who drive long hours to deliver our food, medical supplies, and other essential goods. These men and women in skilled positions – many of which don’t require a four-year degree – have always been the backbone of our economy.

DELIVERY

UCH LIKE THE GROCERY AND food industry workers I profiled earlier, the nation’s warehouse and delivery workers are also unexpectedly on the front lines of the crisis. Ensuring that food orders and packages continue to be delivered is an essential part of maintaing some degree of normalcy in the midst of the uncertainty. And it’s an especially vital lifeline for our seniors and members of other vulnerable populations. While I’m sure many Americans are somewhat frustrated by the shortages and shipping delays, the fact that we live in a world where we can have a once-in-alifetime pandemic and STILL have a reasonable expectation of having our Amazon Prime and Grub Hub orders delivered to our doorsteps relatively quickly is nothing short of amazing.

From National Guard members tasked with securing the containment zone around the early hotspot of New Rochelle, NY, to the Navy sending two 1,000-bed hospital ships to both New York and Los Angeles, to the Army Corps of Engineer’s racing to convert different facilities into temporary hospitals, the men and women of the Armed Forces have stepped up in a big way. It’s comforting to know that even when called upon to engage an unforeseen, invisible enemy the likes of which we haven’t dealt with in almost a century, Americans can count on these brave service members to answer the call of duty. “Our understanding of the coronavirus is rapidly evolving, and we may have to implement further measures to combat the spread of this virus,” warned Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michael Gilday. “America depends upon us to help provide security and stability to this nation, and that’s exactly what we will continue to do.”
