his week’s mini challenge was the “gurls” pairing up to share the gift of shade against another group by giving them a box from Fab Fit Fun (after getting in 15 min quick drag) and explaining why they were getting the items in each box (with as much shade as possible). The groups were: Gigi and Jackie; Crystal and Jaida; Jan and Heidi; and Widow and Sherry. The winning group was Gigi and Jackie who each won a $1,000 gift card and a 1 year subscription from Fab Fit Fun. The maxi challenge this week is thinking like a star and creating a ridiculously and totally unnecessary product for “Droop” and selling it by creating a commercial for it.

The guest judge this week was Chaka Khan and the runway look was “Black Wedding.” The top looks were Jackie, Jaida, Crystal and the winner Heidi. The bottom two were Widow and Jan with Jan sashaying away. I was looking forward to interviewing Jan, but didn’t expect it to be this soon:

Q: At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name? Drag became an interest to start pursuing when I was 23. Many years earlier a friend approached me and said if you ever do drag you should use this name Jan Sport, and I did!

Q: How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul’s Drag Race, and how did it feel when you found out you got chosen? I only applied once. I started doing drag when season 9 was airing, and I thought to myself that I would like to be on season 12. I picked 12 as I thought that would give me enough time to prepare, and 12 is my lucky number. I focused on it, and put all my energy into it. When I got the call, I couldn’t believe it, but I was thrilled to know my hard work paid off. Q: Tell us about your RuPaul’s Drag Race experience? It was a dream come true; to walk the runway and be in front of Ru, Michelle, Carson, Ross, and all the special guests was such an honor. The response from fans is wonderful. They are loving my positive attitude and talent. It’s unbelievable that I got to do this on the world’s greatest drag stage. Q. Is there something you wish you did different? I wish I didn’t cry so much, but other than that I was proud of everything I did. The only thing I would have changed is I would have held a mirror up and refine my commerical performance. Q. How upset were you that you got rooked (my words) and didn’t win the Madonna challenge? I was really upset, as I am the musical theater queen. I can dance and sing and if they were not giving me the win for that challenge, I knew there was no way for me to win the show. It got me so upset that I think it’s what led to my downfall the next week. Q. Did you see the graphic going around social Media saying “Jan you cured the Coronavirus, you are Safe,” and did it make you laugh? All the memes and social media elements to that episode was beyond my expectation. To see the outcry was insane to me. I feel very loved. Q: What’s your marital status? I currently have a boyfriend and we live together in NYC. We have been dating for 2 years now.

Q: Who do you want to win? Its Gigi’s to lose at this point. She has been doing so well and the judges love her. Q: What’s ahead for Jan? Original music is definitely on my horizon, and hopefully some Youtube content. I would also love to be asked back to All Stars.

Care Resource Provides Telehealth Medical and Behavioral Health Services Remaining Committed to Quality and Accessible Care During COVID-19 In these challenging times, our emotional and physical health is compromised by the risk of COVID-19. In the face of this pandemic, Care Resource is even further committed to providing access to quality and comprehensive healthcare. We consistently strive to keep our patients' holistic health in balance. In order to serve our patients while protecting them from COVID-19 by adhering to the practice of social distancing, we have expanded our telehealth medical and behavioral health services.

Telehealth services are being covered by most commercial insurance carriers, including Medicaid and Medicare. Some insurance plans, such as Aetna and UnitedHealthcare, will cover telehealth services at no cost. Uninsured patients will be charged for the service on a sliding-scale basis. Those enrolled in the Ryan White program will also be able to bene it from telehealth services.

In order to initiate a telehealth session, patients must call the health center and speci ically request a telehealth appointment. Next, patients must download the Zoom application on a mobile device, or visit www.zoom.us in order to connect with a provider via video conference.

Care Resource's Behavioral Health Services Department will also offer all counseling services via telehealth. Our licensed behavioral health specialists are available to discuss the heightened levels of anxiety that our community is experiencing during this time and to offer coping mechanisms. Virtual support and social groups will replace in-person meetings. Emergency counseling services will be provided at all locations in Broward and Miami, but

clients are encouraged to call prior to going in for services. For those patients in our Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program, medical appointments will be scheduled as usual. If individuals are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, they should contact their provider prior to coming to their appointment in order for alternative arrangements to be made on a case-by-case basis. "We are pleased to offer telehealth services to our patients as a lexible way of having their healthcare needs met, whether it be questions about their symptoms, starting PrEP to prevent HIV, management of chronic illness, or other questions. We offer new and existing patients access to our telehealth visits, thereby reducing all patients' risk of exposure to COVID-19." – Dr. Steven Santiago, Chief Medical Of icer If you have questions, require assistance, or would like to schedule an appointment, contact us at (305) 576-1234 ext. 623 or 635. Please visit www.careresource.org for more information.

CORONAVIRUS CHAMPIONS

HAT IS THE CORONA/COVID-19 Virus Really Teaching us? I’m a strong believer that there is a spiritual purpose behind everything that happens, whether that is what we perceive as being good or being bad. As I meditate upon this, I want to share with you what I feel the Corona/ Covid-19 virus is really doing to us: 1) It is reminding us that we are all equal, regardless of our culture, religion, occupation, financial situation or how famous we are. This disease treats us all equally, perhaps we should to. If you don’t believe me, just ask Tom Hanks. 2) It is reminding us that we are all connected and something that affects one person has an effect on another. It is reminding us that the false borders that we have put up have little value as this virus does not need a passport. It is reminding us, by oppressing us for a short time, of those in this world whose whole life is spent in oppression. 3) It is reminding us of how precious our health is and how we have moved to neglect it through eating nutrient poor manufactured food and drinking water that is contaminated with chemicals upon chemicals. If we don’t look after our health, we will, of course, get sick. 4) It is reminding us of the shortness of life and of what is most important for us to do, which is to help each other, especially those who are old or sick. Our purpose is not to buy toilet roll. 5) It is reminding us of how materialistic our society has become and how, when in times of difficulty, we remember that it’s the essentials that we need (food, water, medicine) as opposed to the luxuries that we sometimes unnecessarily give value to. 6) It is reminding us of how important our family and home life is and how much we have neglected this. It is forcing us back into our houses so we can rebuild them into our home and to strengthen our family unit. 7) It is reminding us that our true work is not our job, that is what we do, not what we were created to do. Our true work is to look after each other, to protect each other and to be of benefit to one another.

Maq Attack Singer Jay Maq is Back with “No Love”

J

By Paul Hutnick

Photos by Brian Kaminski

ay Maq grew up the son of a preacher man in the Deep South. He recalls his childhood being on constant loop between church and school. He came out to his parents at 14 and upon hearing the news, his mother punched him in the chest. The next day at church she cried on the altar during prayer. A young Jay feared his mother would stop loving him or maybe even kick him out on the street but she didn’t. Today, she is one of the biggest supporters of his music. A majority of the topics Jay Maq explores in his songs have to do with love and the journey to inding it. That includes the longing for love, healing after being cheated on and the con lict of falling in love with people who are unavailable. His latest, “No Love,” is a chilled island, dancehall track that cautions listeners to stop chasing after people who don’t give you the love that you deserve. We spoke with sexy young singer from his home in Los Angeles. We remember you from EchoV, the world’s irst all-gay boy band! What happened to the group? Jay Maq: I left to focus on getting different parts of my life in order. There are so many challenges with being an independent artist and I had to take a step back. “No Love” is the irst single off of your new album. Would you call it an un-love song? The song talks about situations I have found myself in. Things like chasing after someone when the person was not interested or simply jumping into a relationship because I didn't want to be alone.

You acknowledge that you have made mistakes in relationships. I’ve de initely treated lovers poorly.

How so? There was this guy I messed around with one summer that wanted to try dating. I turned him down because I was still healing from the trauma of an abusive relationship. He was heartbroken and it was sad because our chemistry was amazing. I ran into him years later and he seemed jaded and I felt responsible.

Are you willing to share more about the abusive relationship? I was in a physically and mentally abusive relationship. I met the guy online and things were normal at irst. He was fun, bubbly, and frank, which are qualities I appreciate in a guy. About a month into our relationship, he began having housing issues. I allowed him to move into my place and within three weeks, shit started to hit the fan. He hated all of my friends. If I went out and did not respond to his calls, he would threaten to destroy my stuff or even kill himself. He took pills once and had to be rushed to the ER. I left him there and moved all of his stuff out. But like a fool, I allowed him back in and it was nine months of hell that didn't end until he was arrested for threatening one of my friends with a weapon.

That sounds like a mistake you make only once. Love is complicated and truly subjective and ever changing. In relationships now, I’ve always evaluating my needs. I ask myself: What am I happy with? What is not being ful illed? Whose job is it to provide what I need? What am I insecure about and why? It helps keep me in line. What’s your ultimate message with “No Love?”

JDo not let yourself get tangled up in love knots with people that are not ready when you are not ready, and don't force situations that are not meant to be. What is your current situation? I’ve partnered and thankful. We make an amazing team.

What’s your favorite way to relax and chill? I love going to the gym, meditating, roller blading in Venice, playing with my dog, listening to music, cooking something new, and spending time with friends. Due to quarantine, I’ve fallen in love with Animal Crossing on the Nintendo Switch. My partner got it for me and I can't put it down.

What is your guiltiest pleasure? Sweets! Cake, cookies, chocolate, pies... you name it! As long as it's vegan, I’m here for it.

What makes you smile? When I hear a new track and come up with a line that I can't get out of my head.

If you could switch lives with someone for a day, who would it be? I don't think I’d really want to switch lives with anyone. Instead I’d like to spend a week with Missy Elliot. From the outside looking in, Missy carries herself with this con idence, passion, and drive that shakes the industry whenever something is released. She also seems to just have the game on lock as an artist and business women. When I grow up, I wanna be like Miss. Jay Maq “No Love” featuring Macc is being distributed through Distrokid and is available on all digital platforms. Follow Jay Maq on Instagram and Facebook @ jaymaqmusiq.

VIRTUAL VACATIONS AND TRAVEL TIPS FOR THE AGES There has never been a better time to plan your future travels. Even if you don't go there, it is still fun to read about what is going on in other cities. Especially if you are sitting at home. In this column, I explore armchair travel, give some good websites of my fellow LGBTQ travel writers, and suggest some ideas of where to go when travel resumes. Plus I share my value travel secrets. Your irst website should of course be The International Lesbian Gay Travel Association (iglta.org) where under Blogs you will ind travel blogs including my columns on Washington, D.C., Phoenix, Chicago, Paris, Detroit and other cities. Another column is written by another writer on Meridia, Mexico. More recently there is a piece from a writer for Edge Media Networks posted on seven museums to explore from home. I interviewed IGLTA President John Tanzella recently. To ensure a reliable trip (and tour

operator) John recommends buying travel insurance, paying with a credit card, using a member friendly to our community, and more. He notes that not everything is cancelled including Prides. Palm Springs and Atlanta have theirs in the fall and are still on for now. Where to go once travel resumes? He notes that Hungary, Slovenia, Brazil, South Africa, Columbia and Mexico City were emerging new travel destinations for the LGBTQ community. I asked him about where your dollar goes the furthest. In addition to Canada Seattle, Washington (where your dollar is now worth $1.40) and Mexico, South Africa is a great value (at least once you are there). This is especially true if you stay at an African hotel, he said. He also noted Brazil is a very good bargain. I also interviewed travel writer Joey Amato who maintains the LGBTQ travel website, PrideJourneys. His favorite city right now is Oklahoma City which has great food, a

gayborhood (39th Street), a canal, white water rafting, wall climbing and more. “There is so much to do,” Joey said. Joey likes the smaller hotel chains like 21C (which typically develops a museum themed hotel) and Kimpton. Finally I asked my friend for tour operator recommendations. Richard in San Francisco says Rick Steve's tours are great. He went on one in northern Italy. Before I close out what may be a inal column for a while, here are my value travel tips:

Best airlineSouthwest. No bag fee. No ticket By Bill Malcolm change fee. Best legacy airline-Tie: Delta (love their new long haul economy premium service) and American (consistently good). (Sorry United but you charge for carry on in your Basic Economy fares) Best hotel chain-CHOICE Hotels. Especially the Comfort Inn brand. All you need at an affordable price. Hotels to avoid-Any that charge “resort” or “amenity” fee. These sneaky fees for things like use of the hotel gym are disclosed at the end of booking or lumped in with taxes to

Darcelle XV or Portland

Paris, France

make it appear the government requires the fee. Avoid all hotels that charge them and the following cities where all hotels charge them: New York City, Portland OR (downtown hotels only), Las Vegas, and Honolulu. Hotels to avoid #2: Any that have a new 48 hour cancellation policy. My plans change all the time.

San Francisco, CA.

What happened to cancel by 6 pm day of arrival? Marriott and Hilton are the worst offenders here. Best idea: Buy a CITY PASS to see all the attractions at a fraction of the cost. In Chicago, you get your own line to enter the Field Museum and Shed Aquarium. They are a deal. Best travel tip when you get there-Try local transit. It's cheap, frequent, and you mingle with the locals. Most cities have great service to the airport. When to visit: October is great for Paris, as

you skip the crowds. In addition, the Louvre is free on Sunday during the winter. Ditto for San Francisco: The weather is actually better in the winter. April and May in Seattle are great as there are no cruise ships yet, which cause the hotels to ill up and the rates to soar. In a word, off season or shoulder season are great. Best time to travel-The period after Thanksgiving and before Christmas. It's dead as the kids are in school and everyone is out shopping or going to

holiday parties. For other travel tips, reviews, and more, check out these LGBTQ websitesTravelingIQ.com-Ivan Quintalla of NYC does a great travel blog. TravelRight.today is Toronto based Doug Wallace's website. NomadicBoys.com – A couple writes this blog which is recommended by Ivan. So happy arm chair travelling until we meet again.
