week ago Tuesday was the bi-monthly Mack Power Lunch, this time at Beauty and the Feast on Fort Lauderdale Beach. The lunch was sponsored by our friends Mary & Billy's company BMK Media. On Wednesday night, Pridelines hosted their first Drag Bingo with Adora at their new Little River Business District. On Thursday, evening we started the night at Al and Chuck Travel's newest location on Wilton Drive as they hosted the first of what is to be many free monthly mixer. Afterwards, the Smart Ride hosted The Dirty Game Night at Village Pub with hostesses Renica & Bernadette. On Saturday night we started at Ramrod's Pig Dance #96, which featured the sounds of DJ Alex Ramos and then we headed over to Noche Latina Saturdays at the Manor as they featured the victory party for Rolly Villaverde winning Mr. Entertainer of the Year. As usual NLS was packed with Latinos dancing the night away. On Sunday, there were 3 events going on. We started out at Rumors as Chef Howie was having his retirement party. Then we headed over to Flip Flops Dockside Eatery's Monthly Tea Dance with hostess Amanda Austin, and DJ Barry Huffine with this month's special guests TP Lords, and Vanity Fair. Afterwards it was off to the New River Orchestra who held a concert at the Sunshine Cathedral with Music Inspired by Shakespeare. This concert was a benefit for Poverello.

hose of you, like me, who were at the 10th anniversary of Scandals Saloon will remember that owner, Ken Kelley, said “The best is yet to come.” Well a year and a half later, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Ken to discuss his plans of moving Scandals.
What made you and Lloyd start Scandals? For many years, Lloyd talked about his desire to own a bar. He never said exactly why he wanted to own a bar, but I think it had a lot to do with his love of being in a crowd. Lloyd had a bigger than life personality and he found great joy entertaining all those around him. After we sold our printing business in Indiana (I had to stay on with the new owners for five years), Lloyd called me one day from our home here in Wilton Manors and said “Ken, I found us a bar.” I came down and Lloyd took me to this little, tiny bar on Oakland Park Boulevard named 'The Petite Bar & Lounge.' When I first walked it, the place scared the hell out of me. It was a straight bar, dark and dirty and smelling of stale beer and cigarettes. I asked Lloyd if he had lost his mind and he said “but Ken, look around, we can turn this place into exactly the kind of bar you and I will be proud to own.” Lloyd had great insight. I told him it had to be a country/wester bar. That was in August of 2004. Scandals was born on March 18, 2005.
Why did you move from the original location? From the day Scandals opened its doors, the response from the community was awesome. In less than two years, the 1700 sq. ft. building we occupied could not come close to accommodating the customers who supported us. We did not have enough room for a dance floor and as a country/western bar, a dance floor was a must.
After over 9 years in your current location, why are you moving? Parking. Kmart was a wonderful neighbor and allowed our customers to use their parking lot. Unfortunately, with Walmart coming in they have made it very clear they will

not permit any of the businesses' along 6th avenue to use their parking lot. I sent a personal letter to the CEO of Walmart asking him if Walmart would allow Scandals to use the parking lot, and I offered to compensate Walmart for the use of the lot, and told him we would provide security and monitoring. He never responded. While Scandals could sur vive without the Ken & Lloyd parking lot, Scandals as we know it would not be the same. Even with our excellent valet service, there simply isn't enough space around us to accommodate parking.
Every time we talk you always speak so highly of your staff. Can you expand on that? Scandals is not about me but rather about the amazing staff I have the privilege of working with. My guys make it all happen every day. They are incredibly creative, talented and dedicated. Staffing can definitely be a challenge in the bar business. I never let any of the staff say they work for me but rather they work with me. Not one member of the Scandals' staff knows the word no when I ask something of them. In our business, that is a rare commodity and I could not be more proud of all of them who make Scandals Saloon what it is now and what it has yet to become.
Where is the new location? Scandals will occupy a brand new, free standing building located at 3400 North Andrews Avenue in Oakland Park, in the shopping plaza known as Festival Plaza. The new location is 3/10 of a mile from where Scandals originally began.
When is the expected Grand Re-Opening date? Scandals' anniversary date is March 18th. I would love for the 'new' Scandals to open its doors on that date in 2017. I know this is a very ambitious goal but I believe with the cooperation of the City of Oakland Park, we just might very well make that happen. Oakland Park is making great strides in attracting new business to the city and I look forward to working with all the city
departments, the mayor and commissioners to make Scandals a reality just as soon as possible. It is interesting that Scandals will have come full circle – Oakland Park to Wilton Manors, back to Oakland Park.
How will the new locationbebetterthan thecurrentone? The new Scandals will, as much as possible, be a mirror image of the current Scandals- with some major improvements. The new Scandals will be a true destination bar because we will have a full service kitchen offering a variety of 'bar food' and pizzas. The dance floor will be larger without any obstructions – wide open for all the hot cowboys to strut their stuff. The patio will be ¾ covered so weather will no longer be an issue. There are over 900 parking spaces available in the plaza. That might just be enough! For the convenience of our customers, Scandals will continue to provide valet service and will encourage our customers to make use of valet parking.
You have had quite a journey since Scandals opened its doors in 2005. Any regrets? These last 11 years have been an extraordinary journey. I wish more than anything that my partner Lloyd could be here to share this exciting new venture with me. While he may not be physically here, I do feel his presence every day and I believe he still guides me and helps me with all the decisions I must now make on my own. I absolutely love what I do; I am blessed beyond words to work with my incredible staff; I know the joy of true friendship; and I know Lloyd is looking down and saying “well done”. So, no I don't have any regrets.

The Queens Vote Each Other Off! "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars" season two sashays to the screen on Thursday, August 25 at 8pm with a queen-sized 90-minute episode, loaded with more sickening twists and turns than the Presidential election. For the first time in “Drag Race” history, the full season will simulcast on Logo and VH1. This season, RuPaul is changing the rules and will not be eliminating any of the queens. Still Going Strong Since 1951

ince 1951-The Classic Gateway Theatre has dimmed the lights for crowds of moviegoers. They feature an eclectic mix of first run upscale and independent films, as well as the occasional mainstream hit. In addition to regular movies, the theatre plays host for special events such as indie & LGBT film festivals as well as private one day/night screenings. Every other weekend, they show The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a cult classic that if you have never seen on the big screen, you must stop in for a showing. I spoke with The Gateway's GM George Kaspriske to find out a little more about this community gem.
What sets the Gateway apart from other movie theaters?
At the gateway, you get the experience of enjoying a movie in modern comfort and ambiance of a smaller, old school theatre without the hustle and bustle of the megaplexes- and we show independent and "art house" films as well as LGBT offerings that the big theatres don't. Our staff is able to provide you with more personalized attention, and we know most of our customers by name. We are also proud to serve the world's best popcorn.
How many theaters are there at the Gateway?
We have four auditoriums that seat from 120-200 people.
Is there a large gay audience that comes to the Gateway? Why is that, other than the obvious reason that it's close to

There is a sizable gay audience that patronizes the gateway, in part because of the selection of films that we offer, and also because I believe that it is a comfort zone here for the community at large.
Anything you would like to tell us that the public might not know about the Gateway?
The theatre has been around since 1951, and been through numerous ownership and management changes, but has also undergone some remodeling, including new leather rocker seats and digital presentation, and we are going stronger than ever. You can now also bring a glass of wine in from the mod lounge right next door to enjoy with your movie.
How long have you been showing Rocky Horror and what is it about that film that makes it still able to put people in seats all these years later?
We've been presenting rocky horror two or three times a month now for going on five years. It definitely has a cult following, and even the older folks who have seen it years ago are now bringing their children to see it. The faithful handymen live shadow cast performs along to the movie and interacts with the audience also makes it a one of a kind, fun experience. The Classic Gateway Theatre located at 1820 E. Sunrise Blvd. where Sunrise splits off to the east to Fort Lauderdale beach from US 1 North at the big curve. Free parking is available behind the theatre in parking lots on both sides of NE 9th Place in between NE 18th and 19th Avenues.

Benjamin " B r o t h a B e n" E v a n s , W i l t o n M a n o r s Commissioner Justin Flippen, social justice advocate LJ Woolston, HIV/AIDS activist Jason King, and community advocate Lutze Segu were announced as the recipients of SAVE's 2016 Young Guardians Awards. “In the face of what has often been an uphill battle to defend the rights of our community, these five leaders have bravely stood up to help further LGBTQ equality," said SAVE Executive Director Tony Lima. "None of what we've achieved for equality over the past year would have been possible without young leaders like our 2016 Luminaries fighting the good fight at the front lines of the battle. We're so proud to honor them." Here's a little more about each of this year's awardees. Benjamin "Brotha Ben" Evans is a Baptist
m i n i s t e r, motivation al speaker a n d Managing Director of B M e Communit y where he oversees the execution of a national campaign strategy to build caring and prosperous communities inspired by Black men. Last year, Ben made headlines when he came out as gay in a column posted on The Root, the popular online magazine covering the Black community. Commissioner Justin Flippen is a Broward County native with a long record of leadership in South Florida. After receiving his law degree from the University of Florida, he started out as a legislative assistant in Tallahassee in 1997, eventually working his way up to winning election as Commissioner of Wilton Manors in 2008. He served a term as Vice Mayor and was re-elected handily in 2014. In 2016, he supported a measure directing the City to look into how to fund transgender health insurance benefits, and he led the initiative for Wilton Manors to be the first city in Broward County and one of the first in Florida to ban conversion therapy on minors.
Landon ("LJ") Woolston is an advocate and activist, artist, youth worker, a trans-pan-queer Miami native, and a 2015 Point Foundation Scholar. LJ received his Master of Social Work degree from Florida International University, and is dedicated to using his privilege to interrupt oppression, standing alongside and amplifying t h e n a r r a t i ve s of t h o s e w h o a re m o s t marginalized in our communities. For the last three years, LJ has served as the Homeless Service Liaison for Project SAFE, a collaborative program between Pridelines and The Alliance for GLBTQ Youth. Jason King star ted working for AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) in 2010 in the organization's pharmacy division where he discovered his passion for patient advocacy. King now serves as Advocacy and Legislative Affairs
Manager in AHF's Southern Bureau, where he leads local and nationwide advocacy efforts and maintains relations with state and federal officials. He is a member of Impulse, a national HIV prevention group funded by AHF for sexually active gay men 18 to 35. Lutze Segu is the former Program Director of MCCJ. She has led MetroTown, a week long social justice camp for high school students, for which her work received recognition in the Miami Herald. Teens describe the camp as a life-changing experience. Lutze truly pours her heart into making it a safe space for all regardless of race, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, and physical ability.She recently joined the Miami Workers Center as the Gender Justice organizer, where she is responsible for developing a comprehensive sex education campaign to be implemented in

Walk down 7th Avenue and the first gay bar you will see is The Honey Pot on the left-hand side. A high-energy dance club, the owners routinely bring international DJs to spin for the crowds. Further up the street and back on the Centro side of the street is Bradley's on 7th, a neighborhood bar featuring friendly bartenders, a spacious dance floor, and popular drag shows each Friday and Saturday hosted by Joey Brooks. Next door to Bradley's is Liquid Tampa, which is a dual-story nightclub featuring a dance floor, drag stage, bars and seating on the main floor. Many RuPaul's Drag Race queens make their Tampa debuts at Liquid. One block away, on the other side of the street, is Southern Nights Tampa. If you want to relax at a bathhouse after going to the clubs (or any time of day!), the Ybor Resort and Spa is centrally located in Ybor City, a block from 7th Avenue, and it boasts the largest hot tub in the city, situated outdoors in a tree-lined patio area. The Tampa Men's Club is another well-known bathhouse, located off Hillsborough Avenue between Dale Mabry Highway and Tampa International Airport.
WHERE TO GO Museum of Science & History
When you're in Tampa, start sightseeing in the northern part of the city. Learn about science hands-on at one of the largest science museums in Florida, the Museum of Science & History (well-known locally as just “MOSI”). Just across the street is the University of South Florida, one of the largest public universities in the state. Within a five-minute car ride from MOSI and USF, you will find Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. If you've been to Busch Gardens in Virginia, you will find that the format of the parks are similar, except the theme here is not Europe, it is Africa. Sashimi The Owner Jacky is amazing as well as extremely knowledgeable but truly cares where he sources his ingredients from. Everything is all natural, not frozen or
canned and there are no products with GMO's, they don't even use MSG. They have gone back to their roots to use real salt instead. They even make their Soy Sauce from scratch every day (along with all their other sauces) and they infuse it with sake (and other secret ingredients) for a special taste that you simply must experience for yourself. A perfect date night starter would be their Sashimi Appetizer that features equal pieces (perfect for sharing) of Salvadorian White and Red Tuna with Norwegian Salmon. They are handmade and filled with a ground chicken ball and then topped with delicate shrimp and scallions. While I wish it were true, I somehow doubt it. If Robby were gay, he'd have better hair! If reports are to be believed, Justin Bieber doesn't want anyone thinking he's gay - even if he's just acting. Bieber was allegedly considering following up his critically acclaimed performance in "Zoolander 2" by playing a pop star in "Uber
Girl". But co-writer Pete O'Neill says that Biebs won't agree until some changes are made to the script. Like what? "He won't take the part unless the sex scene with him and one of the male backup dancers is taken out of the final script." However, Justin's people say no talks about this project have ever taken place. With the Olympics looming large, we were thinking about hunky gymnast Danell Leyva. You may remember the Cuban-American from four years ago, when we ran a series of nearlynude photos which came from his cell phone, to say nothing of a nude workout pictorial (all of which can be found on BillyMasters.com). Believe it or not, Danell (who was the only US gymnast to win a medal at the 2012 London Olympics - he won the bronze medal for allaround gymnast) was an alternate on this year's Olympic team. But he's been moved up due to a teammate's knee injury. It's ironic that an injury worked to Leyva's advantage, since an injury is what nearly kept him off the team in the first place. Days before a key qualifying meet, Danell was left with several gaping wounds on his legs and hands after trying to separate two of his pit bulls! And this isn't a first - four years ago, he had to get 80 stitches near his ear after being bitten by the same dogs days before the American Cup!
