WHAT A WAY TO START THE YEAR!

I

n 1989, long before “out” LGBT athletes in professional sports was commonplace, professional bodybuilder Bob Paris won the Mr. Olympia title for the fourth time – and the same year became the first Jackson male athlete to come out publicly as gay and proud. Paris and his equally sculpted Adonislike boyfriend, Rod Jackson, were the stuff of every gay man’s dream. As models their chiseled bodies and dashingly good looks filled dozens of magazine covers and hundreds of pages of coffee-table books, notably by elite photographers Herb Ritts and Tom Bianchi. Bob and Rod’s break-up after seven years ultimately caused unimaginable heartache for gay men around the world, but their impact was huge: their flawless physiques inspired an entire generation to work out while their very public relationship gave the world its first example of a loving relationship between two alpha males. We see shades of Bob and Rod in our cover models this week, photographed by our own amazing Dennis Dean. They are another handsome male couple with chiseled bodies who, too, are making an impact on the fitness world, in this case inspiring countless numbers of South Floridians – LGBT and straight – to achieve their optimal fitness and health. Mike Verdugo and his business and life partner Trey Opp operate Bodytek, a newly-franchised group training program with locations in Wilton Manors, Wynwood and Davie. Not only are Mike and Trey passionate about fitness, they are also good patrons of the LGBT community and an incredibly loving and lovable couple. Hotspots has teamed up with Bodytek as well as a host of other fitness and healthrelated businesses to present a free Fitness Fun Fair this Saturday, Jan. 7, at Bodytek on

Old Dixie Hwy., Wilton Manors. There will be free classes, demonstrations and prizes all day. If your new year’s resolutions involve improving your health and fitness, don’t miss this Clark event! Before you go, check out the articles on getting started in a new fitness routine by expert personal trainer and massage therapist Tom Bonanti, who joins the Hotspots family this week as a fitness and health columnist.

u THURSDAY JAN.05

The Kravis Center Cultural Society presents Lunch and Learn: Sexual Healing: An Intimate Conversation With Dr. Ruth Westheimer, interviewed by Steven Caras at 11;30am. Dr. Ruth Westheimer may have pioneered talking explicitly about sex on radio and television, but it's a small part of an inspirational life that began with escaping the Holocaust at the age of 10. Only after joining the Israeli Freedom Fighters and before extensive studies at the Sorbonne, the New School of Social Research and Columbia University's Teacher's College did she begin to broach the subject of sexuality. Meet this highly accomplished celebrity in a colorful dialogue with Steven Caras, covering everything you may still need to know about sex, and equally if not more stimulating, details of a life journey that continues for this ageless international treasure. This event takes place at the Gimelstob Ballroom in the Cohen Pavilion, and tickets are $89, and includes lunch prepared by Catering by The Breakers. Starting today and going through Jan 11, the Pride Factory is featuring their Semi-Annual Storewide Clearance Sale with 20-75% markdown in all departments.

Forbidden Broadway, the 35th Anniversary Tour comes to the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center today and tomorrow at 8pm. What is TRUVADA for PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis)? TRUVADA is a prescription medicine that can be used for PrEP to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 infection when used together with safer sex practices. This use is only for adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This includes HIV-negative men who have sex with men and who are at high risk of getting infected with HIV-1 through sex, and male-female sex partners when one partner has HIV-1 infection and the other does not. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV-1. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP?

Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: u You must be HIV-negative. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1 infection. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. u Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting TRUVADA for PrEP or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: u You must continue using safer sex practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. u You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. u To further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: • Know your HIV-1 status and the HIV-1 status of your partners. • Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months or when your healthcare provider tells you. • Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV-1 to infect you. • Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior. • Have fewer sex partners. • Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. • If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. u If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time.

TRUVADA can cause serious side effects:

u Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis),

which is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, nausea, vomiting, stomach-area pain, cold or blue hands and feet, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and/or fast or abnormal heartbeats. u Serious liver problems. Your liver may become large and tender, and you may develop fat in your liver. Symptoms of liver problems include your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, and/or stomach-area pain. u You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or serious liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking TRUVADA for a long time. In some cases, these serious conditions have led to death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of these conditions. u Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you also have HBV and take TRUVADA, your hepatitis may become worse if you stop taking TRUVADA. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider. If your healthcare provider tells you to stop taking TRUVADA, they will need to watch you closely for several months to monitor your health. TRUVADA is not approved for the treatment of HBV.

Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP?

Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you also take lamivudine (Epivir-HBV) or adefovir (HEPSERA).

What are the other possible side effects of TRUVADA for PrEP? Serious side effects of TRUVADA may also include:

u Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare

provider may do blood tests to check your kidneys before and during treatment with TRUVADA for PrEP. If you develop kidney problems, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking TRUVADA for PrEP. u Bone problems, including bone pain or bones getting soft or thin, may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. u Changes in body fat, which can happen in people taking TRUVADA or medicines like TRUVADA. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP are stomach-area (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking TRUVADA for PrEP? u All your health problems. Be sure to tell your healthcare

provider if you have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis virus infection.

Please see Important Facts about TRUVADA for PrEP including important warnings on the following pages.

u If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not

known if TRUVADA can harm your unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking TRUVADA for PrEP, talk to your healthcare provider to decide if you should keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Pregnancy Registry: A pregnancy registry collects information about your health and the health of your baby. There is a pregnancy registry for women who take medicines to prevent HIV-1 during pregnancy. For more information about the registry and how it works, talk to your healthcare provider. u If you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. The medicines in TRUVADA can pass to your baby in breast milk. If you become HIV-1 positive, HIV-1 can be passed to the baby in breast milk.

u All the medicines you take, including prescription and over-

the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. TRUVADA may interact with other medicines. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. u If you take certain other medicines with TRUVADA for PrEP, your healthcare provider may need to check you more often or change your dose. These medicines include ledipasvir with sofosbuvir (HARVONI). You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Comes to the Broward Center

Hotspots Exclusive Interview by Scott Holland

R

oundabout Theatre Company announces the Fort Lauderdale premiere of the national tour of Sam Mendes (Spectre, American Beauty) and Rob Marshall’s (Into the Woods and Chicago, the films) Tony Award®-winning production of Cabaret. Cabaret is coming to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts for a limited two week run, January 10 – 22. Randy Harrison, best known for his portrayal of Justin in the Showtime drama Queer as Folk, steps into the role of the Emcee and “deserves every moment in the spotlight,” exclaims Sharon Eberson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette while Andrea Goss, a veteran of Roundabout’s Cabaret on Broadway returning to the role of Sally Bowles “is magnetic at every turn – spectacular” hails Hedy Weiss of the Chicago Sun-Times. Joining them are Benjamin Eakeley (Cabaret/Broadway) as Clifford Bradshaw, Alison Ewing (Cabaret/Broadway) as Fräulein Kost, Mary Gordon Murray (Hands on a Hardbody) as Fräulein Schneider, Scott Robertson (Cabaret/Broadway) as Herr Schultz and Patrick Vaill (Macbeth) as Ernst Ludwig.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Scott Robertson who reprises the role he played on Broadway, celebrating 40 years on the New York stage, for this exclusive Hotspots interview. u At what age did you start performing? I would say about 15. I actually did a couple plays in Stanford Connecticut in Community Theater. One of the plays was with my father and it was called, “Bells Are Ringing.” Then I did Theater camp at 15 and 16. What was your first professional/paid gig? I did some children’s theater I got paid for, but my first big gig was Grease, the national tour. I did it for about six years and I played Roger the Mooner.

Do you have a favorite city when you tour? I haven’t been on tour in many years as I mostly now do Broadway and Off-Broadway, but I really enjoy Arizona. I also enjoy playing near college campuses as the tenor of the crowd is very different. With 40 years of performing under your belt, is there still a part you want to play? I have always wanted to play in Jacques

u

Other than Cabaret, which parts have been your favorite to play and why? One of my all-time favorites was when I did a production of Falsettos where I played Mendel. Falsettos was originally two different

musicals and they put them together. I got hired to do it in the Pittsburgh public theater, and it was one of those parts I felt I could do for the rest of my life. It made me feel like I had arrived. It was a role I just adored. In addition, I played Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha. It was a challenge, but filled with joy.

Hotspots Exclusive Interview by Scott Holland Brel is Alive and Well and Living In Paris. I was thrilled with the score and what it offered to the actors. I also love the Nathan Lane role in The Producers, and I think I could rip it up.

What should the South Florida audiences expect from this touring company of Cabaret? I think they are going to see talent that is over the top. Almost everyone in the show plays musical instruments. When you see it, you kind of can’t believe it. This is the 50th anniversary of Roundabout Theatre Company, and this is exactly what we did in New York City. The dancing is spectacular, with choreography by Rob Marshall. They will see a show that resonates with what’s really happening in the country today, but within all of that it’s incredibly entertaining. If they haven’t seen this production of Cabaret, there is nothing like it, and they are in for a big surprise! John Kander, Fred Ebb and Joe Masteroff’s Tony-winning musical features some of the most memorable songs in theatre history, including “Cabaret,” “Willkommen” and “Maybe This Time.” Cabaret is set in the infamous Kit Kat Klub, where the Emcee, Sally Bowles and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd––and to leave their troubles outside. Roundabout Theatre Company’s 50th Anniversary tour of Cabaret features original Broadway direction by Sam Mendes and original co-direction and choreography by Rob Marshall. Tour direction is under the helm of BT McNicholl (Spamalot) and choreography is recreated by Cynthia Onrubia (Victor/Victoria). The design team includes set design by Robert Brill (Assassins), costume design by William Ivey Long (Chicago), lighting design by Peggy Eisenhauer (Ragtime) and Mike Baldassari (Nine), sound design by Keith Caggiano (The Radio City Christmas Spectacular) based on the original Broadway design by Brian

Ronan with hair and wig design by Paul Huntley. Cabaret features orchestrations by Michael Gibson (The Boy From Oz), music supervision and vocal arrangements by Patrick Vaccariello (On Your Feet) and music direction by Robert Cookman (Legally Blonde). Cabaret is based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood.

uTickets are available at the Broward Center AutoNation Box Office (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale), browardcenter.org or by calling (954) 462-0222. Ticket prices start at $35. For more information, go to cabaretmusical.com or roundabouttheatre.org.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

This time of the calendar year every publication does it; they post a list of New Year's resolutions that should be implemented into your life. Well, here are mine, from a fitness trainer's point of view. This

is a list of, shall we say, 7 perfectly achievable suggestions to make you fitter and healthier in this banner year of 2017. Make the next 365 days your best and happiest and healthiest ever. You deserve it.

Resolution #1: Begin each day with a healthy breakfast. Research shows that people who eat breakfast tend to take in more vitamins and minerals, and less fat and bad cholesterol throughout the day. The Mayo Clinic recommends eating a variety of foods (steel cut oatmeal, whole grain toast, low-fat dairy products, fresh fruit) rich in protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Never skip breakfast, but instead take the time to pause, prepare these healthy foods and try to eat them in a non-rushed manor. Your first meal of the day will set you up on a ritual of healthy eating all day long. Resolution#2: Be more active. One way to overcome the morning blahs and bolster your mood is to get active and stay moving all day. Try working out in the morning if your schedule permits. You may not have the time to get to the gym, but a quick power walk, a jog around the block, or some calisthenics will help you burn fat, boost your metabolism all day, and put you in a better frame of mind at work! Don't try to do it all at once. Even just using the stairs at work or walking the dog are simple ways to pack more activity into your day. Resolution#3: Revise your training regime and stay consistent with your workouts. Periodize your training schedule for optimum results. Look upon the year ahead as one big macrocycle with goals and objectives such as getting your body fat down below say, 18%, and putting on 5 lbs of muscle. Break down the bigger cycle into mesocycles of maybe 3 to 4 month periods of time with specific goals for each designated interval. If your workouts are boring or if you're not seeing results, it's time to change things up. Resolution #4: Take your measurements. How will you know if you are making progress if you don't have a benchmark? Find a trainer who can help you, or go on line to find the formulas, or find a decent scale that will help you chart your measurements. Besides height and weight, you need to know your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), BMI (Body Mass Index) as well as your body fat%. Take these measurements every 3 months to assess your progress.

Resolution #5: Make exercise a daily ritual! It's a given that physical activity has countless benefits, so why are 60% of all Americans sedentary? Regular exercise (a combination of anaerobic weight training and aerobic cardio training) helps control weight, maintains healthy bones, muscles and joints, and reduces the risk Type II diabetes, heart disease and many forms of cancer. Resolution #6: Protect your largest organ (your skin!). Your skin begins to age the moment you are born, so the best way to protect it and look younger is to limit your sun worshipping. In order to avoid some of the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays, which create wrinkles and skin cancer, observe the following: always wear sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher; wear protective clothing; avoid damaging tanning beds. Resolution #7: Adopt a positive frame of mind and learn to celebrate life. Like attracts like, as they say, so avoid negative, critical people who drag you and others down into the mire with them. Gracefully let them go. Use your energy to accomplish good things and good things will come your way. Embrace life and all it has to offer you and teach you! Begin a new hobby, say “yes to invitations, be adventurous, shake things up a little, learn to chill and laugh!

Absolutely Awesome Abdominals How to Get Them! By Tom Bonanti

No doubt, a wash-board midsection is the crowning achievement of any physique. In addition to looking sleek and sexy, a lean, toned middle is good for maintaining a healthy, pain-free lower back. Did you know that maintaining low belly fat and a flat midsection can also prevent heart disease, colo-rectal cancer and other life threatening conditions associated with obesity? Why not start the New Year with a renewed resolution to turn that tubby tummy into a six-pack to die for?

successful ab routine. Begin a crunch in a supine position lying on a mat. Place your feet on a bench or exercise ball with your hips and knees flexed at 90 degrees. Rest your arms across your chest, or if you have problems with your neck, simply cradle your neck and your head with your hands. Do not pull on your neck. This is the starting position.

oFor proper technique, move the chin to

the chest. Pull the rib cage up and over the pelvis. Keep the lower back flat and continue to crunch upward, elbows and chest to the knees. Contract your abs as hard as possible. To make crunches harder, add resistance by clasping a 10 or 15 lb weight to you chest as you crunch. Side crunches, reverse crunches, and crunches over a resistance ball are all great variations on a theme called crunch!

oWhile crunches build solid abdominal

muscles, you must do cardio to melt away fat from your midsection. For starters, try doing cardio (power walking, swimming, elliptical, etc.) for at least half an hour twice per week. Make sure to warm up gradually, then get your heart rate up to about 65 to 80% of your maximum heartrate (220 - your age). Warning! If you haven’t had a checkup or done cardio in a while, see your doctor first!

"Large and

in Charge" [exclusive interview] by Scott Holland photos by Jose A. Guzman Colon

South Florida is a vibrant place to live, with lots of colorful entertainers, and no group makes it more fun than our drag queens/female impersonators. Therefore we here at Hotspots decided to start a new column that will feature one queen every week, so that the community gets to know them a little bit better. It was my pleasure to pick Latrice Royale for the inaugural column, as Latrice and I have been friends for almost 20 years. What was the first drag show you saw?

Tell me about the experience. The very first drag show I ever saw was Kenny Kerr's Boylesque show in Las Vegas. I think I was maybe 16 years old. I was completely baffled that this was a man looking like a woman. It opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities. When did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession? Well, I was dared into doing drag in the first place. And after winning the Drag

Wars Competition at the World Famous Copa in Fort Lauderdale after only my second attempt, I figured I had a knack for it. It wasn't until about four years later that I transitioned into drag as a full-time career. Who is your drag mother, and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother and why? I never had a drag mother “proper,” however I have claimed Tiffany Arieagus and she has finally announced me officially as her daughter. I guess I must have finally done something right! [laughs] My favorite queen other than Mother Tiffany is, hands down, Bianca del Mother Effin' Rio. She is clearly the smartest business woman out of the RPDR franchise, and DEFINITELY out of the winners. Both Tiffany and Bianca are professionals who exemplify the definition of artistry and business, and that's why they are who they are to me. What's your favorite number to perform and why? I have several favorites, but where I get my ENTIRE life is performing gospel. I love taking the children to church. It's food for the soul and they get to experience something that they never would have expected in a nightclub. What's the best thing that has happened to you in drag? I got engaged while in drag in front of what felt like the whole world at Seattle Pride. Now the video of the proposal has more views than my music video!!! It's like, that's nice, but also like, well damn! [laughs] It was a really special moment and people really connected with it and got some joy when they needed it the most. I was really happy to get to share it in such a special way. THANKS JUJUBEE!!! What sets you apart from other queens? For starters, I've always been the type of person who marches to the beat of their own drummer. I've never exactly fit in, which frees me from feeling the need to TRY to fit in. I'm "Large and in Charge"—for real for real! "Chunky yet Funky"—I think I move as well or

Why We Love Her! She started her drag career right here in South Florida.

She went to jail, owned it, and picked herself back up again and shot for the stars.

She proposed to her fiancé, Christopher, on stage and posted it for the world to see.

Being one of the world’s most sought-after Queens has not changed the humble person she is.

better than any big girl in the game. And I'm "Bold and Beautiful"—Latrice embraces all her curves and swerves. But most of all I pride myself on spreading positivity throughout the world in these trying times. I don't see enough of THAT in this industry. What does the future hold? My future is bright and unpredictably exciting. I'm booked further ahead than I ever have been in my entire career, and I have a whole new set of dreams and ambitions. Doing these cabaret shows has really opened me up to other avenues of entertainment, and I look forward to being able to touch people more directly as I continue to grow as an entertainer.

x No rainbow ahead for LGBT Americans Expect religious freedom defense to justify discrimination. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

by Peter Jackson

A

ny hope that the time had arrived when America would symbolically raise the flag of human rights by legislating full federal equality for LGBT Americans ended with a gut-wrenching punch when Donald Trump won

the presidential election. A Hillary Clinton presidency had potential to deliver, among other advances for LGBT rights, the passage of the Equality Act, a bill which proposed a much-needed amendment to the Civil Rights Act of

1964. The amendment would have provided widereaching protections against discrimination in the workplace, housing, public education, public accommodations, federal funding, credit and the jury system on the basis of gender identity, sex and sexual orientation. America would have witnessed a social emancipation. No longer relegated to being second-class citizens, an estimated 14 million LGBT Americans finally would have been given equality under the law to live, love, get married, have families and pursue the American Dream. While optimism is a wonderful quality, imagining any kind of rainbow under a Trump administration is tough to do. The sobering, gun-in-your-face reality is that big challenges to the rights of every LGBT American lie ahead in 2017. Not only do Trump's appointments represent the singularly most vehemently anti-LGBT administration in history, but salivating at the sidelines with blood in their eyes are the Christian fundamentalists who lifted Trump to victory and will waste no time collecting payback on promises he undoubtedly made to them during the campaign. For these Christian fundamentalists, including LGBT hate groups (let's call them what they really are) like the American Family Association and the Family Research Council, a priority

in 'Making America Great Again,' is the reversal of the Supreme Court's June 26, 2015 ruling to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. Rather than take the much more difficult route of trying to reverse the Supreme Court ruling, the Republicans have hatched a plot, it appears. It is the First Amendment Defense Act (FADA), and its intention is to torpedo not only marriage equality but all LGBT advances under the Obama administration. Republican Senators Mike Lee (Utah) and Ted Cruz (Texas) confirmed during an interview with BuzzFeed last month it was their intention to reintroduce FADA, a bill which paves the way for widescale discrimination against LGBT Americans under the guise of “religious freedom.” Essentially, FADA would prohibit the federal government from taking any action against people, including federal employees like marriage license clerks, that openly discriminate “on the basis that such person believes or acts in accordance with a religious belief or moral conviction that marriage is or should be recognized as the union of one man and one woman, or that sexual relations are properly reserved to such a marriage.” If passed, FADA would translate into hunting season for wide-scale discrimination in America, the prey being not only the queers, faggots and sissies,

Not only do Trump's appointments represent the singularly most vehemently anti-LGBT administration in history, but salivating at the sidelines with blood in their eyes are the Christian fundamentalists who lifted Trump to victory...” but Blacks, Mexicans, Muslims and Jews. This blatantly discriminatory piece of potential legislation wasn't successful when it was first presented in the House three years ago. But in the current Republican-controlled House and in the current anti-LGBT political climate… Among the challenges ahead for LGBT Americans in coming months is an almost certain increase in random acts of intolerance, hate, discrimination and violence. We are seeing reports of these acts on a

against others whose differences include religious beliefs, ethnicity, sexual orientation and/or gender identity. This is the result. The thing is, time has not stood still. Today, LGBT Americans are out of the closet and living proudly more than ever. They are getting married in record numbers and many are starting families and raising abundantly-loved, happy children. They are contributing positively to society and serving their communities. And they are going back

Trump’s administration: Most anti-LGBT in history.

frequent basis now accompanied by the chorus, “Trump will Make America Great Again.” Intentionally or not, there is no question that Trump fanned the long-simmering flames of racism and intolerance in rural America

in the closet, no matter what the Christian fundamentalists want. Watchdog organizations like the Human Rights Campaign, National LGBTQ Task Force, and Equality Florida had better be ready. We are going to need them.

How is the real state market now in South Florida? Interview with Michael Capul of the Capul Group and Luxury Homes about what you need to know about Fort Lauderdale’s hot real estate market |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

by Ian Maloney

Tell our readers a little about yourself and how long you have been in Real Estate. I have been a realtor for over 10 years here in South Florida for Luxury Homes and I was also a Realtor in NY for Douglas Elliman. I have been working with the institutional, commercial as well as residential real estate. I have completed hundreds and hundreds of real estate transactions with a value of over $40,000,000. Do you specialize in any specific types of real estate? Over the past few years I

have been tending to do transactions with a larger weighting towards Luxury Homes, Commercial Properties, Residential condo & homes. Do you focus on any specific neighborhoods? Since I am a Fort Lauderdale resident and a Wilton Manors home owner I have a unique insight into their markets and demographics. Dealings with Oceanfront , Intracoastal, Downtown Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors --- Single Family Homes, Condos and multiunit investments. Also, my experience with

renovations and rehabbing homes and condos gives my clients additional insight into how to make a successful deal happen as well as having a finished home of their dreams. How is the market now in South Florida? My opinion on the South Florida Real Estate Market… As long as interest rates stay relatively low, and the United States is a safe haven, as well as having a new president that has a “HUGE” amount of his wealth tied up in Real Estate, Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, Oakland Park and the surrounding areas are well positioned to outperform the country's real estate market performance and will remain one of the top places for the LGBT community to be moving into from other parts of the country and world. What community organizations are you involved in? I am currently a member of the Board of Directors for the South Florida Symphony. In addition, I am an avid supporter of various LGBT charities like Sun Serve, Broward House, and The Pride Center. I also make it a point, whenever possible, to work with gay owned law firms, title companies and mortgage brokers. If you are interested in buying or selling a home in South Florida, contact Michael at 954891-0788 or email him at mike@CapulGroup.com. He will get you a palace fit for a queen!

Scenes from the Gay8 Festival in the heart of Little Havana last year.

Miami's top bands, businesses, community leaders, and all of Miami will once again come together on January 15, 2017 for the second annual Gay8 Festival. Gay8 (GayOcho!) is the first Latino LGBT art, music and food street festival in Miami's historic Little Havana, and features some of Miami's most celebrated musical talent— bands like Lucy Grau, the Spam Allstars, Son Lokos, and Locos Por Juana. The inaugural festival surpassed

all expectations with an estimated 17,000 in attendance in 2016. "We were so thrilled to see such a great response on a first-year event. The LGBTA* community is honored to host a festival meant to open doors and connect people who traditionally don't connect" said organizer Damian Pardo. "We hope Gay8 will continue to represent a fun-filled day for all Miamians where we celebrate connection and collaboration."

Gay8 also features a number of events surrounding the street festival— including dance parties, food tastings, free film showcase, cigar tastings and pop-up art performances. Miami's richest flavors will fill the air with captivating aromas as noted local restaurants host booths offering some of the best South Florida cuisine. Miami-Dade College's Tower Theater and the Miami International Film Festival will showcase three LGBT themed movies during the festival. Visual arts are also aplenty at Gay8, as some of the best artists South Florida has to offer will punctuate the festival at booths displaying unique, authentic works of art.

There will be spontaneous performances throughout the festival in varying locations, free historic walking tours of the area and much more. Further, the festival will highlight the issue of gun violence in our community, including an exhibit by the Stonewall National Museum and Archives related to the Pulse nightclub shootings. For more information

including schedule of events, booths and sponsorships, visit www.gay8festival.com.

NEED WOOD

By Woody Miller

The Case for Condoms Dear Readers, Sometimes I get letters worthy of taking up the whole column and this is one of them. It was in response to my recent column about HIV:

P

ersonally I am disappointed and appalled in your response to the letter. You are in a position of great influence. This article makes it sound like there are reasons to give a pass for not wearing a condom. In my opinion, you response is unacceptable. Articles like this is why HIV continues to be around and labeled a “Gay problem”. I am a nurse of 30 years. I have heard it all. I am also a single vers top that is very active. I also play in the BD/ SM fetish world. It seems like this fetish area is more prone to sex without condoms. I have one absolute rule when it comes to sex/playing; NOTHING goes into anyone without protection. That applies to toys, fingers, and “My toy”. I make this very clear to someone new I meet before we start playing. If the guys says “I am allergic to Latex” not a problem, I have a “Latex Free Kit” for just such an excuse. I honestly can say I have never had sex without a condom on. NEVER! I have responses to the excuses you have in the article; uCondoms smell awful and feel worse – Really!?!? There

are flavored and scented condoms if your nose is that sensitive. There is also flavored lubes. How do you smell dead? uCondoms give your dick a flat tire – If a guy cannot keep it hard in a condom, he needs to see a doctor. I am 53 years old and have no problem keeping it hard with a condom on. In fact, it sort of acts like a cock ring in a snug way. (not that I am bragging). uHeat of the moment - I am not a gym God by any means. That said, I have had some very beautiful guys come over and want to do it without a condom. I tell them it is not going to happen. One guy said; you do not think I am cute? I told him he is gorgeous but that does not make him condom exempt. He left thinking I would beg him not to leave. I waved good-bye Sorry, my life is more valuable. I am not usually one to respond to articles but your response really set me off. Maybe it is also because my former partner turned positive three years into our relationship. He had always wanted to do it in the raw. My rule is; unless you are chained to me 24/7/365 it is not going to happen. My partner turning positive is a perfect example of stupidity. He was 24 when he got HIV and now has to deal with HIV the rest of his life. I discovered he may be positive

when I found a video of him with someone doing it in the raw when I was out of town. Sorry, my partner was living with the king of safety (me). Now who is the Victim? If guys would think with their brain and not their dick, HIV may have been eradicated years ago. I am in no way HIV phobic. I am HIV friendly. In fact I play with more HIV guys than not. I just treat everyone as if they are positive. There are guys out there that are doing it in the raw and say they are negative, that is probably because they have not been tested in 5 years. I get tested every 3 months. Sites like BBRT promote unprotected sex thus promoting the continued spread of HIV. I don’t get it. Gays wonder why the Hetero society look at gays in disgust. OK, I will get off my soap box. ---Leather Master
