Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey to Unveil Out Of This World Circus By Scott Holland

R

ingling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey invites their South Florida fans to engage in a new circus experience as they present Out Of This World, a cosmic voyage that takes everyone to space to witness incredible acrobatic performances on various planets introduced through lead characters and a good versus evil storyline. This all-new immersive experience is coming to the American Airlines Arena in Miami. “As we unveil Out Of This World, a show unlike anything experienced before, we are launching our iconic brand into the future,” said Alana Feld, Executive Vice President of Feld Entertainment and Producer of Out Of This World. “Ringling Bros. is constantly changing, but this is more than that. In this production, we're creating a new genre of circus that will shatter expectations, spark excitement and push the limits of what's possible.” In Out Of This World, audiences will be riveted by an interactive, action-packed storyline illed with space-age family fun and technology, which deepens their connection to the performers. Through the lens of a magic

An All-New Intergalactic Family Experience telescope capable of discovering the most spectacular circus stars in the galaxy, they will join the Circus Space Fleet on a heroic mission of good versus evil to bring performers back to Earth, traveling to interstellar worlds of sand, water, ire and ice. For the irst time, the show features thrill skaters in addition to unbelievable performances by gravitydefying acrobats, majestic animals and hilarious clowns. Imaginations will run wild throughout the nonstop display of artistic athleticism, with acts seamlessly transitioning from loor to air to ice, a feat never before done in Ringling Bros.

Back for his seventh tour as Ringmaster with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, it was a pleasure to sit down with Johnathan Lee Iversion, just a couple weeks before they come to South Florida.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey to Unveil Out Of This World Circus Were you a ham/performer as a kid? Sure, when I needed to be.

You were very young, 11 years old, when you started with the Boys Choir of Harlem. How did that come about and tell me about the experience? My mother recommended it. I'd seen a news segment on the choir and found it appealing. Their extensive traveling schedule is what intrigued me most. I always desired to travel. The audition was simple, at the time seemed like the greatest event of my life. However, when I got accepted I had no idea I had to actually work for a shot at performing. I thought I'd just get on with it. You know how we're told in this reality TV talent show age. It was the hardest 18 months of my young life. I attempted to quit every week. However, the work eventually paid o and the result was an enchanting life experience during my teen years: traveling the globe, performing with the likes of Stevie Wonder on the world's most coveted stages, including the White House, for Presidents and dignitaries such as Nelson Mandela.

Barbara Walters named you one of the 10 most fascinating people in 1999, can you remember how that felt? Did it help your career? Initially being selected sounded great. I wasn't pleased with how I was presented on that show. Certain segments of the press cling to this Boys in the 'hood narrative when talking about black

As always it's The Greatest Show On Earth, but this time in the universe.

What was your irst professional (paid) gig? I believe the soundtrack for the motion picture Glory.

You have been with Ringling Bros on and o since 1998. Does it ever get boring? Are you kidding? My coworkers ly and talk to animals, among other extraordinary things. I wouldn't trust anyone bored by that.

people. That wasn't my reality at all. I grew up on Central Park West for goodness sake. So, no it did nothing for my career, because it wasn't the truth.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey to Unveil Out Of This World Circus that can compare to being the voice who initiates the most wondrous presentation on the planet, nothing. Hollywood awards season is upon us and every year, I think to myself: "they need 99 + takes and CGI to do what we do, but are hailed as demigods." No, the miracle, the magic, the birth place of American pop culture still resides under the Big Top.

You have performed off-Broadway, in commercials, have done voiceovers, and you write freelance. Is there one you enjoy more than the others, and if so why? It's a privilege to be capable and afforded a venue to work in various capacities of entertainment. Essentially I play for a living and for some reason people pay to see it. I never take that for granted. However, writing is most exhilarating, as it comes through me as a completely original thought or creation.

Other than in this new show, what has been your favorite act(s) in the circus over the years? The Working men & women - our crew. Watch them at any show and it is a stellar performance all its own. Without them, there is no show.

What should the South Florida audiences expect from this version of Ringling Bros circus and how does it differ from the past? As always it's The Greatest Show On Earth, but this time in the universe. They'll be intrigued by the intergalactic tale of good vs. evil, friendship lost and regained and all the high wattage adventure in between, even before the show during our Animal Open House and Star Seeker's Early Access. What made you come back and take over the Ringmaster hat one more time? There's nothing in the performance world

What's ahead for Johnathan? I'm inally going to begin working on my book. The demand is there and I believe I am mature enough to properly tell my story and even appreciate what it might mean to others. Know any good publishers? Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey's Out Of This World Circus will be playing at the American Airlines Arena until January 15. Tickets for can be purchased by visiting Ringling.com.

Andrew and Steven will join the ranks of 500,000-plus same-sex married couples this weekend

WHY MARRIAGE MATTERS ... AND LOVE WINS

uThe reality 18 months after marriage equality By Peter Jackson

W

hen Andrew LaRochelle and Steven Bowe exchange their marriage vows in downtown Fort Lauderdale this Saturday, they will join the burgeoning ranks of more than half a million same-sex couples legally married in the United States. There has been a rush to the altar by LGBT Americans in the 18 months since June 2015 when the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution guaranteed same-sex couples the legal right to marriage – or, as Justice Anthony Kennedy put it, “equal dignity in the eyes of the law.” Research reported by the Williams Institute estimates 123,000 LGBT marriages in

just the first 12 months after the ruling, with wedding spending generating $1.58 billion for local and state economies. But not all of America is celebrating the victory of marriage equality. The opposition has been strong with the likes of Kim Davis, the defiant Rowan County, Kentucky clerk who famously chose to go to jail rather than comply with a federal court order to grant same-sex marriage licenses. Today, incidents of discrimination by those planning a same-sex wedding are rampant. One in four (25%) of engaged or recently married couples “know for sure or suspect they

were rejected” by wedding vendors. That is just one of the alarming findings of new research revealed last month by Bernadette Smith, president of the Equality Institute. Addressing the 17th Annual Community Marketing LGBT Tourism Conference Lee Rubin, right, officiates at a same-sex marriage in Las Vegas, Smith presented the Personally, since marrying, I have experienced findings of the 2016 Survey of Contemporary an immediate recognition by straight people of my Couples and Wedding Trends which also relationship when I reference my husband – which revealed that 52% of engaged and recently never happened in the previous 18 years when he married same-sex couples are afraid of being was just my ‘domestic partner.’ - Lee Rubin rejected by wedding vendors. Obtaining immigration and residency benefits for non-citizen spouse. Even the ability to visit your spouse in jail and other places where visitors are restricted to immediate family. Combined, these benefits matter because they give LGBT families the kind of equality that can’t be obtained through any other means.”

uDREAM COME TRUE But back to Andrew and Steven and their nuptials this weekend set amidst the backdrop of residential high-rises and million dollar yachts lining the New River in Fort Lauderdale’s historic downtown. Steven, who works in the banking industry, is in disbelief that after their eight years together, “I now get to legally marry the man I want to spend the rest of my life with… that is something I never even dreamed for myself.” Andrew, who is an advertising representative for Hotspots Media Group, gushes, “You know when you can’t imagine not spending every day with someone that it’s time for the next step in commitment.” There are almost certainly legal battles in America’s future as marriage equality continues to be a hard lump in the throats of the evangelicals and attempts to legalize discrimination against the LGBT community under the guise of religious freedom have already been announced. But for now, at least, as tens of thousands of loving LGBT couples choose the sanctity of marriage in a nation that promises “liberty and justice for all,” the words of Jim Obergefell, whose Supreme Court case it was that brought about marriage equality, are resounding loudly: Love Wins!

[exclusive interview] by Scott Holland From the moment I first met Alyson Thomas, too many years ago to mention, I took a liking to her. Years later when we got together to resurrect the Miss Florida F.I. Pageantry System (along with Victor Zepka and Gary Santis) we spent so much time together she has become a member of my family. My hope is that you will love “Momma Bear (her nickname) as much as I do after reading this feature. What was the first drag show you saw and tell me about the experience? My first show was at the legendary Sweet Gum Head in Atlanta, GA. The year was 1974 I believe. What made it so captivating was the sequins, rhinestones, and realness of the cast. I remember my mind flooding with questions, and trying to figure out how the girls did what they did to look that way. Of course, I had no idea about hormones, silicone, surgery, being allowed to live as a woman, let alone become one. I didn't know how to do hair, makeup, sew, or pad, so seeing all this made me want to go back every night to learn and become part of the crowd. When did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession? I decided to venture into the idea of playing in women's clothes at age 14, sneaking out of my window into the alley behind my home in Brooklyn, NY and seeing the hot and sexy Puerto Rican boys that lived in my

neighborhood. By 18, I started collecting "drag" of my own. I would play and read magazines and look at pictures to learn makeup and hairstyles. I didn't have someone to "paint" me and I had no gay friends, and I wouldn't dare tell anyone my secret. It was taboo. Throughout my 20's and 30's I concentrated on my education, my career and trying to be accepted in the business world. I knew I was "gay" but it couldn't come out in school, at work or around my family. For me, at that time, drag wasn't an option only a weekend secret. I would enter "talent shows" to get bookings so I could be on the stage. Drag became serious for me around 34-35, when I felt I had achieved success in my career, I owned a home, had a stable support group of "queens" and although it remained a secret, when I dressed I never let those people in the nightlife see the other side of me - the daytime version. By the mid 1980's I was getting calls to be in shows because I weighed under 100 lbs. and looked like a female. Who is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother and why? I never really had a "drag mother" as the girls have these days. I had role models and they molded me, helped me and encouraged me. The legendary Billie Boots and Mickey Day paved the road for me to start my career. A very talented queen who was much younger than me, Crystal Lambega, taught me more than any other entertainer at that time. She showed me how to shine on stage, how to lip sync and how to as she said "sell your goods and make your coins". Crystal did puppet skits that were so entertaining to me she was a Broadway/Las Vegas star. I would have to say my favorite entertainer is Carmella Marcella Garcia. Not only has she always kept me laughing with her humor and sincerity, but as a human being no one has been so down to earth honest, humble and genuine with me from day one. Through personal struggles and demons, to family and pageantry, George T. has always been a phone call, a text, an email or a plane ride away. I owe my roots in South Florida to two people, Danny Villar and Carmella Marcella Garcia. What's your favorite number to perform and why? My favorite number to perform is "Never Been to Me" by Charlene. The song's meaning touches my heart and my dear sister Lola Lush gave me the CD when the movie "Priscilla Queen of the desert" came out and it was the title song to the movie. It has been a money maker for me and it makes me feel good when I hear it. What differentiates you from other Queens (Makes you Unique)? What makes me unique is my sense of style. Class, stature and style come from within. I molded my style off of the classic simplistic straight lines of the 1940's and 1950's. Women like Lucille Ball and Jaqueline

The best chatter on Facebook and Twitter this week

“We all have to get used to everyone’s differences and understand that this is a big, gigantic, beautiful, colorful world and it only works with inclusion and empathy. It only works that way. Live and let live. Love and let love.” —Pharrell Williams, appearing on Ellen.

“We are convinced that Jeff Sessions will not fairly enforce our nation’s laws and promote justice and equality in the United States.” —A letter to Congress signed by more than 1,100 law professors protesting the appointment of President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for Attorney General, the anti-LGBT and raciallyinsensitive Jeff Sessions.

“Next time I’ll ring through beforehand so you don’t have to shoot me.” —Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, who took a stroll at 3 a.m. around Buckingham Palace because she couldn’t sleep and was “nearly shot” by a guard.

“She said some very not nice things about homosexuals, so I didn’t feel that was good of me to have her on the show to give her a platform after she was saying things about me.” — Ellen Degeneris, talk show host, who canceled a scheduled appearance on her show by gospel singer Kim Burrell, who was supposed to perform a duet with Pharrell Williams from the new film Hidden Figures. A video went viral prior to Burrell’s appearance in which she railed against gays calling them “perverted.”

“The cheers were louder than the boos and I must say, ‘Thank you!’ If anything, I hope LGBTQ youth can see something like that and stand proud. I am proud to be standing with them. From the voice of a gay man who has been living with HIV/AIDS for nearly 30 years, my message to those LGBTQ youth: ‘Don’t give up and you are worth more than you know! Also, life does get better…” —Greg Louganis, 56, five-time Olympic medalist, who received boos and cheers as the first gay grand marshal of the Rose Parade last week.

From RADIO to the CLUB

by Ryan Edwards

...a fresh take on what we are hearing right now!

H T BEATS My name is Ryan Edwards, and I am an aspiring writer who also loves to poke fun at various topics, especially music. After all, there is so much seriousness in the world today, why not add some laughter? I have lived all over the United States, from Manhattan to Las Vegas to Fort Lauderdale and beyond. However, no matter where I've traveled, I've always considered South Florida to be home. I spent my early and mid-20s living in Wilton Manors reading and hoping to have my photo in

Hotspots. So, it's an honor to now write a music column for them. Look, I'm 36 years old, so today's pop music just doesn't cut it with me. I'm at the age when Sexy Otter meets Bitter B!tch. In my day, the Chainsmokers were my friends and me at 5 a.m. walking from the Coliseum to the Copa. Twenty One Pilots was a damn good night at the bathhouse after an airline convention. However, some of it is tolerable, so here's my take on some big songs in late 2016.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

1 This Town by Niall Horan Omg! This song is so lame and hipster that I am gauging my ears, getting a sleeve tattoo that says “Mom, and buying plaid suspenders from Urban Outfitters as we speak. [friend shows me who sings it on the internet] Oh, it's by the hot blonde from One Direction?! It should win a Grammy. It's everything!

2

Side by Side by Ariana Grande feat. Nicki Minaj Does Nicki Minaj still speak with that fake ass English accent? You know, the one that sounds more fabricated than the one from that new Beverly Hills Real Housewife. Horrid. Some call Ariana the next Mariah Carey. Whatever. Licking a donut is hardly the same as a Glitter level breakdown. Maybe in a decade she'll be invited to Rockefeller Center to screech a version of “Problem” with a haggard Iggy Azalea looking like a Lil Kim, the one from today.

3

Closer by The Chainsmokers I had a gay mid-life crisis, so at age 30. I too bought a Range Rover I could not afford, so this song really speaks to me. Also, omg! That one half of the group is so hot! Which one? Well, one looks like an Andrew Christian model, and the other looks like John Goodman's reject son. You tell me, hunty!

24K Magic by Bruno Mars

What do Bruno Mars and twinks have in common? Cocaine in Las Vegas. What do they not have in common? Twinks don't get caught. Amateur! Oh, and, c'mon! All that money you made off of “Uptown Funk...” You can afford 240K Magic. Step your game up!

I Don't Wanna Live Forever

by Zayn Malik & Taylor Swift Beyoncé may have had the greatest video of all time, according to Kanye, but Tay Tay had a duet with the hottest man on the planet and on the soundtrack for the hottest movie on the planet! Taylor may go “Back to December” all the time after this massive hit. Hell, this bad b!tch bags every hot musician. She's got four #1 Billboard pop hits by herself and several more by injection.

One of the things that makes South Florida special is the diverse Hispanic population that calls the area home. While the Latino population hale from all across the globe, the Cuban community is most often associated with Miami and the cultural hub of the county is Calle Ocho or SW 8th Street, the heartbeat of Little Havana. Last year, Damian Pardo and a group of his friends decided that they were going to bring two of South Florida's largest groups together right on Calle Ocho. The street already played host to the festival of the same name but Pardo and his crew knew

that there was a need to represent the LGBT community in Little Havana, as well as at other places like Miami Beach, which hosts the wildly popular Miami Beach Gay Pride in the spring. After a Herculean effort to get an LGBT festival off the ground, Gay 8 was born last January and the success blew everyone's mind, but solidified the idea that a place like Little Havana is ready to host our community, even rolling out the red carpet, cigars, and bongos to put on a party like no other in South Florida. The demographics and identity of Miami's heart is in flux. Little Havana is the historical, spiritual core of the Magic City. It's long, colorful history involves all of Miami's prominent, ethnic communities at one point or another (African-Americans, Anglos, Cuban-Americans, Haitians, Jews, Mexicans, Nicaraguans and yes Gay Americans as well.) Presently there is a another shift taking place in the area—while there is palpable energy in the air as new, younger Miamians begin to populate the historic neighborhood, talk of gentrification, uncontrolled development, a fragile, self sustaining economy and rising crime rates concern everyone. The LGBT community has a long track record of leading restoration and revitalization efforts in several of Miami's historic communities i.e. Coconut Grove, South Beach, Wynwood, and Midtown. In the aforementioned areas, the gay community has been

instrumental in balancing historic preservation with economic development, celebrating diversity while maintaining professional and civic standards that attract tourism and investment. Gay women and men in Miami have been pivotal in redefining the city's most significant urban enclaves—Little Havana will be no different. Whether you are a long time resident of South Florida who hasn't had much of a reason to check out Little Havana in some time or an out of town snowbird or intrigued foreign traveler that pops into Miami Dade County to check out Gay8, the event strives to build a lasting bridge that will bring all of the city's communities together in celebration and forge a union that will unite us all as proud Miamians for generations to come. The Pa'Lante awards will take place on Friday, January 13 at 7pm at CubaOcho (1465 SW 8th Street) and will honor Cecilia GutierrezAbety, Executive Director of Miami Children's Initiative, Denise Brown, Founder and President of RJT Foundation, Desmond Child, a musician, songwriter and producer, and Steve Adkins, President of the Miami Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. For more information on the Pa'Lante Awards visit Gay8Festival.com. The Gay8 Festival will take place on Sunday, January 15 from 11am till 10pm on Calle Ocho between 14th and 17th avenues. GAY PARTIES CELEBRATE TRUMP INAUGURATION

The Log Cabin Republicans, a group of gay Republicans, is throwing a post-inaugural bash on January 21 in Washington D.C. dubbed a ‘T Party’ while Gays for Trump is throwing a “Deploraball”, the Washington Blade reports. It will be a cocktail reception where tea as well as alcohol will be served. Meanwhile, a North Carolina-based organization called Gays for Trump is organizing an Inaugural DeploraBall Gala on the inaugural evening of Jan. 20. It will be held at the upscale Bolger Center Hotel in Potomac, Md. Gays for Trump President Peter Boykin said on the group’s Facebook site that all “deplorables” who supported Trump during the tumultuous presidential campaign — both gay and straight — are invited to attend the event. He was referring to the term “deplorables” that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton used to describe some Trump supporters.

The web site GayGuys.com lists 8 reasons why daddies make the best boyfriends for younger gay men: “He’s gone through a battle of the twenties, lessons of the thirties, and peace and tranquility of the forties. He knows what lies behind the bush because he’s been there, done it. He knows his boundaries and actually pays attention to them rather than ignoring it because he knows the dangers of doing so. This kind of attitude will flourish any relationship while inspiring you to find your own self. He is wise, mature and a better lover.”

Lung Yai Thai Tapas Feeling a bit spicy? Run don’t walk to Lung Yai. This has to be among the best Thai places in Miami.

By Ian Maloney If you are anything at all like me, you love Thai food. Having been raised in a part of the country where there are basically no Asians, I never had Thai food growing up, but once I tasted it, I was hooked. After searching far and wide for a good authentic Thai restaurant in Miami, I was so excited to learn about Lung Yai Thai Tapas, which is located, of all places, in the heart of Little Havana on Calle Ocho. (1731

SW 8th St) Should you decide to venture out during the Gay 8 festival, or any other time you are feeling a bit spicy, run don’t walk to Lung Yai. This has to be among the best Thai places in Miami. Since finding this place, my husband Alan and I have become regulars. The restaurant is quite small, especially for Miami standards, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up

for in flavor and authenticity. Seating options are at an L shaped bar or at one of the few tables on an outdoor patio. (Outdoor seating only available at dinner) and all food is prepared right in front of your very eyes behind the bar. If you are lucky, Chef Bas (Veenuthtapon Trisransri) will be at the wok, the restaurant is his creation and the dishes come from his imagination. As I have mentioned the

food is amazing but here are a few of my favorites, all dishes are served tapas style so order a bunch and bring a pal to share with. As starters, I recommend the Tom Kha Soup ($5), the Grilled Pork ($9), and the Chicken Wings ($5). The Crispy Spring Rolls ($5) are also a delight. Tom Kha is Tom Kha Soup a coconut milk based soup that contains lime juice, mushroom, galangal root, cilantro, and Thai herbs. You can order it with chicken, beef, or shrimp and as mild or spicy as you like. Like all the dishes, the soup is made to order and is the stuff of dreams, perhaps because it is freshly made. The Grilled Pork are small Chicken Wings portions of pork ribs that are marinated and deep fried until Pad Woon Sen ($10) and the Massaman Curry ($12). You can also add tofu, beef, chicken, or shrimp for an up charge of $3. All of the dishes at Lung Yai exceed expectations so go often and try out the different regional specialties. The restaurant is open TuesdaySunday for lunch and dinner but pay attention to the timing of your visit. Lunch is served from 12pm-3pm with the last seating at 2:45pm. Dinner is served from 5pm12am. Since the place is small, come early and be prepared to wait a few minutes. Trust me, it is worth it!

RICHARD GRAY

The Pied Piper Behind Fort Lauderdale’s Success in LGBT Tourism

INTERVIEW 5 Questions

W

By Peter Jackson

hen Richard Gray, managing director of Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, presented at the 17th Annual Community Marketing LGBT Tourism and Hospitality Conference in Las Vegas last month, the audience paid very close attention. Gray is recognized as a pioneer in marketing to LGBT travelers and credited with attracting 1.5 million of them to Fort Lauderdale every year, boosting the local economy to the tune of $1.5 billion. In a new global marketing and advertising campaign that began Jan. 9, Fort Lauderdale became the world’s first destination to use transgender models in mainstream destination advertising for its 2017 campaign “to showcase the destination’s image as an authentic, diverse and inclusive,” according to the CVB. We asked Richard about the new campaign and a lot more in just 5 questions:

LGBT travelers are especially important as they spend more money than mainstream travelers. Last year over 1.5 million LGBT travelers came here and spent over $1.5 billion.

1

Q: The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) was the first in the nation to have a separate LGBT department and today leads the nation in its pioneering marketing efforts to the LGBT community. Will we see a continuation of this trend in 2017? A: Five years ago we became the only Convention & Visitors Bureau/Tourist Board in the world to have a designated department whose sole responsibility was to develop and grow LGBTQ tourism. Fast forward five years and I am amazed that we are still the only game in town. Good for us because we are continuing to grow market share and destination awareness and show how inclusive, cosmopolitan and fabulous Greater Fort Lauderdale is.

2

Q: Why are LGBT travelers important to tourism in Fort Lauderdale? What do they contribute?

A: All travelers are important to Greater Fort Lauderdale because tourism creates jobs. Tourism is the #1 industry here followed by the marine industry. LGBT travelers are especially important as they spend more money than mainstream travelers. Last year over 1.5 million LGBT travelers came here and spent over $1.5 billion. Yes, a billion, with a “B.” The fact of the matter is the gay community spends money. They love to stay in nice hotels, eat at great restaurants, shop and of course love to enjoy the nightlife scene. I am proud to say we have one of the best LGBT scenes in the United States. Wilton Manors, of course, is the epicenter of the LGBT scene but it is spreading out into Oakland Park and Hollywood with restaurants, boutiques and coffee houses. All good for this destination as we continue to evolve and even though we are primarily known as a beach destination for travelers we are beginning to have more of an urban vibe.

q

INTERVIEW

3

5 Questions

Q: In another first, Greater Fort Lauderdale hosted the largest transgender conference in 2015 and your outreach efforts to the transgender community have been unparalleled. Why is the T in LGBT so important to you?

A: I wanted to use my global tourism platform to talk about the forgotten “T” in LGBT. It was of the utmost importance to me that we spoke to the Trans community just as we spoke to the lesbian and gay traveler. More than two years ago we launched a historic U.S. National Transgender Travel study to better understand the needs of Trans travelers. One of the main learning curves was that this is a very stealth community. Following the study results, we launched our Trans campaign called “Where Happy Meets Go Lucky,” and created a dedicated Transgender travel landing page on our website sunny.org/tlgb, placing the “T” first to further illustrate our commitment to the market. As a diverse community that has always been very inclusive, we commissioned the study to better understand transgender travelers and to educate our hospitality community on how to be more sensitive to the needs of these travelers. We know that the authentic vibe that people feel when visiting an LGBT-friendly destination is what attracts allies and millennial travelers that support communities that offer these experiences.

4

Q: In 2016 you were honored with an Honest Travel Award by the travel trade news website eTurboNews (eTN) and SuccessfulMeetings.com identified you as one of the most influential people in the global meetings industry honoring you with their 2016 Trailblazer Award. Last month you were the recipient of the Q.Digital’s inaugural Innovator Award for 2016. How does it feel to be so recognized for your pioneering work and how do you plan to build on this success?

A: Awards are really the icing on the cake, especially when they are from your peers. I have dedicated more than 25 years to supporting and marketing the LGBT community in Greater Fort Lauderdale. My focus continues to be on keeping Greater Fort Lauderdale ahead of other destinations by pushing the envelope with our marketing tools as well as educating our community about LGBT travel. Greater Fort Lauderdale is a cosmopolitan, edgy, diverse, inclusive, authentic and accepting destination for all travelers. It is a part of our personality, and it is who we are as a destination.

Venezuelan transgender model Isabella Santiago stars in Fort Lauderdale’s tourism ads.

5

Q: What are your thoughts on LGBT tourism on a national or even global scale? A: Global acceptance is continuing to grow and obviously safety is primary when we as LGBT people travel. While, it is important to always to be true to who you are and your values, sometimes when traveling it is best to always be thoughtful and respectful of the culture and customs of the Country you are visiting. n

Carrie Fisher

Debbie Reynolds

HOLLYWOOD | INSIDE & OUT

Why all the fuss about Carrie's admitting she had an affair with Harrison Ford? I have to admit I slept with her father!" — Debbie Reynolds' response to the fuss that followed the release of "The Princess Diarist." |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

2016 really went out with a bang, didn't it? Days before Christmas, Carrie Fisher reportedly stopped breathing on a flight from London to Los Angeles. People close to Carrie tell me that she suffered from sleep apnea, which may have been a contributing factor in this incident. While she had little hope for recovery, being on a ventilator allowed her loved ones time to say goodbye. One of the people who couldn't say goodbye was Carrie's mom, Debbie Reynolds. She simply wasn't

strong enough to see her daughter like that. What can I say about Debbie Reynolds? She was exactly what you'd expect - no airs about this legend. She was fun, bawdy, outrageous, but also quite poignant. If you could get her alone (which was tough even for her family), she showed depth and empathy particularly for those suffering from mental illness. She was incredibly devoted to Carrie. When discussing her daughter's problems, she once said, "I always feel, as a mother does, that I protect her.

Who will do that when I'm gone?" The day after Carrie's death, Debbie also passed away. Debbie's son Todd believes she willed herself to die so that she could be with (and continue to take care of) Carrie. Once Carrie was gone, so was the center of Reynolds' life and her reason to live. Carrie had a child with longtime partner Bryan Lourd, who subsequently left her for a man! Debbie quipped, "You know, dear, we've had every sort of man in our family we've had horse thieves and alcoholics and one-man bands - but this is our first homosexual!" Maybe, maybe not. For eons, there were rumors that Debbie's close friendship with Agnes Moorehead was more than platonic. A 1974 feature in "People" magazine alluded to this: "Last April, when Debbie's closest friend, Agnes Moorehead, died at age 67,

Ryan Seacrest

the missing vocals were the ones she was supposed to be singing! Carey's team claimed she didn't sing because she could not hear the track in her earpiece or the monitor. But that can't be the case because she lip-synched the first and last songs adequately. Throughout "Emotions", the dancers around her obviously heard well enough to perform without incident. My sources tell me that Carey planned to lip-synch all three songs, but somehow the wrong "Emotions" track got cued up, and she never intended to sing live. Mimi's people calls this sabotage. That may be true, but it sure is funny to

Mariah Carey

rumors circulated about the two women's relationship." That's quite a bold statement for 1974! Sources claim the affair was confirmed by Debbie's son, Todd—although I've yet to find that specific quote. But Reynolds was always very close with gay people. In fact, mother and daughter will be buried on the other side of a wall from one of Debbie's best friends— Liberace! As 2016 drew to a close, Ryan Seacrest barely made it out alive. The day before the "New Year's Rockin' Eve" celebration, he was trapped in an elevator! He Tweeted, "Hi, from underneath the ball in Times Square". If I had a nickel... The awkward situation lasted 35 minutes until Ryan was extricated thanks to some sexy members of the New York Fire Department. Next time you want to see hot firemen, Seacrest, just buy the calendar! You'd think that given the pre-show mishap, the telecast would go smoothly. It did for Ryan, but the same can't be said for Mariah Carey! Mimi was set to sing "Auld Lang Syne", "Emotions" and "We Belong Together". I suppose the word "sing" is incorrect "lip-synch" is probably a more accurate term. She got through the first number - clearly not singing. Once "Emotions" kicked in, Mariah found herself in an awful dilemma. What started playing was the background track - no prerecorded vocals (aside from the high-pitched pyrotechnics at the end). This left Mariah completely flustered onstage, saying "We're missing some of these vocals, but it is what it is - let the audience sing." Yeah,

watch, as you'll see on BillyMasters.com I traditionally tell you two things at the beginning of every New Year. Yes, I watched the Kennedy Center Honors even without Ambassador Schlossberg lumbering out in an ill-fitting gown. As to New Year's Eve, I always spend it watching Lindsay Wagner movies with dear friends. 2016 was a big year for Lindsay - TWO NEW FILMS! I don't expect any of you have heard of "Change of Heart" or "Love Finds You in Valentine", for PixL and UP TV, respectively (whatever they hell they are). But, hey, a gig's a gig. And Lindsay never disappoints. When I'm showing my sentimental side, it's time to end yet another column. But, first, a big announcement. After years of your clamoring, I am giving in to the demand for a book. Not really a memoir—more like a recap of the past two decades of gossip, with more than a handful of personal anecdotes. I plan to name the names behind some blind items and share some salacious stories I was asked to suppress. And all these recent deaths delivered a silver lining—fewer potential lawsuits! Of course, the lawyers always pore over www.BillyMasters.com—the site where my convictions have never led to a conviction.

If you have a question, send it to Billy@BillyMasters.com and I promise to get back to you before Seacrest offers himself up as a CPR dummy at his local firehouse! So, until next time, remember, one man's filth is another man's bible.

The remarkable history of Ecuador and its geography has helped us to appreciate the cultural richness of its communities that are located on the Pacific coast. In Ecuador, there are impressive glaciers and mountainous landscapes that extend through the different types

of ecosystems that are very particular of the region. Ecuador has a population of about 15 million inhabitants. The country is divided into 24 provinces, among the most important are: Bolívar, Galápagos, Guayas Imbabura, Pichincha where the capital city of Quito is located, and Guayas where Guayaquil is the largest city in the coastal region. It has a population of over 4,000,000 inhabitants, and is also the largest city in the country. These cities respectively represent coastal and mountain cultures. Ecuador is a multiethnic country, and its population is of indigenous, African and European origin. The majority of Ecuadorians are mestizos, with Spanish and indigenous ancestry. However, more than one million Ecuadorians have

African roots, and many of them live in the Esmeraldas and Chota regions in the northwestern part of the country. As far as the LGBT community is concerned, civil unions between people of the same sex is completely legal; they were originally legalized in 2008 and the law was finally completed and was instituted on September 15, 2014. Therefore, Ecuador is in very good position regarding the rights of the LGBT community. In Ecuador you can find a wide range of gay nightclubs. Among the most recognized and exuberant are: El Divino, Radar & Bitch Nightclub. When speaking of tourism, Ecuador must be one of your top destinations to visit. What follows are four tourist destinations I've highlighted that are among many beautiful

places that this extraordinary country has to offer. Yasuní National Park is one of the most diverse regions in the world. It is possible to navigate through mighty rivers, to hike in the jungle, to see an extraordinary amount of species and to share with the indigenous communities that have inhabited the area for hundreds of years. Mindo Nambillo is a phenomenal ecological reserve. It is a natural paradise of humid and cloudy forests, spectacular landscapes where rivers and waterfalls converge. The reserve features an extraordinary biodiversity of orchids, butterflies and birds. Dubbed the World Bird Capital, it is one of the most attractive tourist sites in Ecuador, where there are about five hundred varieties,

Bolón de Verde

Locro

Mindo Nambillo

the largest avifauna on the planet, including species such as toucans, parrots, owls, wild ducks and hummingbirds. The historic center of Cuenca is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Ecuador. It fascinates because of ts preserved historic center which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is home to beautiful colonial and republican architectures, and a spectacle of cobbled streets, small markets, ancient squares and colorful balconies. The village of Montañita is a seaside resort surrounded by hills and lush vegetation. Its beautiful landscapes have been consecrated as one of the most popular tourist places of Ecuador and are highly visited by young people and surfers. These tourists have left the town with an attractive atmosphere of relaxation and hectic parties that don't end till the sun comes up. This destination also attracts tourists because of its picturesque village, where rustic constructions made from cane and straw are mixed with inns, endless bars, informal restaurants, craft fairs and surf shops. All along its pedestrian streets, the reggae music is a constant next to the pennants with symbols of peace. The gastronomy of Ecuador is unparalleled, among its most typical dishes are Bolón de verde, Locro Ecuatorianos, and a delicious cream of Zapallo and we could never overlook a rich and very cold Pilsen to wash it all down with.

NEED WOOD

By Woody Miller

BAD EXPERIENCES

H

ey woody! I’ve had a couple of bad experiences with Grindr guys showing up at my door looking 20 years older than they are and three inches shorter than they advertised if you know what I mean. Is it bad karma to turn away a guy at your door if he totally lied about himself? Or should I be nice, let them in and let them down gently? -- Feeling Guilty

y Dear Feeling Guilty: I don’t think you have the right to turn them away. You have the obligation to do it. Don’t confuse bad karma with good sense. You should be punishing liars, not rewarding them. Let’s face it; there are guys online who lie so much their business cards say, “Professional Liar.” These guys are counting on your horniness blurring your vision and turning their visit into a Convenience f#ck. The best way to stop these guys is to insist on lots of pictures *before* you meet them. If the pics don’t match or look suspicious, meet them in a neutral place or don’t meet them at all. The whole lying thing reminds me of a concept called, “The Tragedy of the Commons.” Here’s the condensed version: If individuals exploit the resources of a common piece of land without thinking about the costs of that exploitation to other users, the land will wither and die. Hence, the “Tragedy.” If apps are the land, then trust is the resource. Anybody who lies about something important is exploiting “the commons” for their own personal gain and ruining it for others. That’s why it’s so important that you call out the liars. Now, almost everyone fibs and fudges online, according to a study quoted on WebMD. In fact, the study showed 81% of online daters fibbed. That’s for heterosexuals. Can you imagine what it is for gay guys?

Fortunately, the study showed that “extreme lies” are rare, probably because the people who tell whoppers get tired of doors slamming in their face. The eventuality of meeting limits the lying to acceptable and undetectable levels. BTW, the majority of the fibs in the study were about age and weight, and most of those were fairly undetectable in real life. So how do we avoid the “Tragedy of the Commons” when most of us are going to fib? By making sure that the lies do no harm. That means never lying if it: A. Compromises the Other Person’s Values. If he believes in monogamy and you lie about being single…well, you just manipulated him into violating his own moral code. Don’t do it. B. Puts His Health And Safety At Risk. That includes lying about STDs, drug use or, worse, owning the complete collection of Olivia Newton John albums. C. Pisses Him Off Because The Lies Are So F#@king Obvious. It’s okay to lie about your age if you really look the age you’re lying about. But if you say you’re 28 and you look like you owe Jesus three bucks for the lumber, then that’s NOT OKAY. It’s okay to lie about your weight if you’re near the weight you’re lying about. But it’s not okay if the guy’s looking for a slender build. Bottom Line: If somebody lies about something important, turn him away. Don’t be rude but do be direct. Just say, “I’m sorry but you don’t look anything like your pictures or anything in your profile. This isn’t going to work. Goodbye.”

Shoulders Like Boulders How to Get Them! By Tom Bonanti

One muscle group that guys sometimes forget about or simply train routinely, are shoulders, technically known as the deltoids. Strong well developed deltoids will give your upper body that extra flair. The stronger these muscles are, the more your deep rotator cuff muscles will be protected from injury. The deltoids are located at the top of each arm and consist of the anterior or front deltoids, mid or lateral deltoids, and the posterior or rear deltoids. Well developed deltoids resemble canon-balls and they’ll give your physique the extra “POW”!

HOT BODIES Workout

oLateral raises are great for the mid deltoids and they help you to achieve a broader look to the upper body. Stand with your feet slightly spread. Keep your back straight, your arms hanging at your sides. Holding a dumbbell in each hand, raise the dumbbells to shoulder height, keeping your elbows slightly bent. Return to the starting position slowly and intently.

oFront raises are dynamite for the front and

rear deltoids. Stand with your feet slightly apart. Hold the dumbbells with your palms down (overhand grip). Resting the dumbbells on your thighs or slightly to the side, raise the dumbbells forward to shoulder height alternating each side.

oBent over lateral raises are great for the

overall shoulder, but especially for the rear deltoids and upper back. Stand with your feet spread apart and your knees slightly bent. Bend forward at the waist and keep your back straight. Hold the dumbbells with your elbows slightly bent. Inhale and raise the dumbbells to your sides. Exhale as you complete the movement.

HERE’S MY GUIDE TO EXERCISES THAT WILL HELP YOU TO ATTAIN BIGGER, BROADER SHOULDERS: oSeated dumbbell presses are great for

front and mid deltoids as well as for traps and triceps. Sit on a bench with your back straight. Never arch your lower back during any weight training exercise. Grasp two dumbbells with an overhand grip and lift them to your shoulders, palms facing forward. Inhale and press your arms to an extended vertical position. Exhale as you lower them back to your shoulders

oThe upright row is another exercise for the

mid and rear deltoids. Holding a weighted bar in front of you with an overhand grip, pull it to your chin while keeping your elbows above the bar. Keep the bar close to your body.

oWith each of the above exercises try

performing three to four sets of 10 to 12 reps with a manageable but challenging weight. Be careful to maintain proper form with each exercise. Train shoulders twice a week for best results!

uFor more information on routines to

develop just about any muscle group, contact Tom Bonanti (954) 557-1119 or trainertomb@aol.com.
