A Time to Take Pride This Sunday, tens of thousands of LGBTQ Floridians, visitors and friends will gather on Fort Lauderdale Beach for Fort Lauderdale Pride 2017, a day of music, entertainment, food, merriment and fun. We need this. After a brutal general election which produced a disappointing outcome for many in the LGBTQ community, a turbulent political climate and rumors of looming legislative battles ahead, we need this day of Pride to celebrate all that we have achieved and all that we are. The fact is more than one million gay and lesbian Americans are now legally married and live in happy, healthy households -- many with children. The fact is the annual spending power of LGBTQ Americans is approaching $1 trillion, making our community both an economic force to be reckoned with as
well as a growing political power. And the fact is, no matter how much others may wish to invalidate our lives or legislative discrimination under the guise of religious freedom, we are out of the proverbial closet for good and we will continue to demand equality in this land of liberty and justice for all. Our congratulations to this year's Pride Fort Lauderdale committee who have worked tirelessly to create a free, public event with appeal to all ages of the community. Organizing events of this size is a mammoth undertaking and we thank all the organizers for what is often a thankless task. As you will discover in the Pride Guide which starts on page 65, a non-stop line-up of entertainment and music is planned with the idea of making this a fun day all. We'll see you on the beach this Sunday!

The award-winning documentary Kings, Queens, & In-Betweens, which focuses on the drag kings, drag queens and transgender performers in Columbus, Ohio, will receive a national VOD launch on March 7 (including iTunes, Amazon and Google Play), as well as a limited theatrical release on March 3. Candy Factory Films will distribute the film, which is directed by Gabrielle Burton and produced by Five Sisters Productions. Kings, Queens, & In-Betweens explores a Midwestern city with an extraordinary and unexpected drag scene, and the larger theme of exactly what gender is and what it means. Through the compelling personal stories of eight performers and their troupes in Columbus, Ohio, Kings, Queens, & In-Betweens makes a complex subject approachable for mainstream audiences -- inviting viewers into a conversation about the distinct and important differences between gender, sex, and sexuality, which has not been represented in film before. A heart-warming, engaging film, Kings, Queens, & In-Betweens is thoughtprovoking and sends a message of love and acceptance, reflecting a community unified in the belief that we are all just human. Of the film, the Cleveland Plain Dealer says,

“I fell in love not just with the film, but with the performers...after the make-up and wigs come off, their stories are unforgettable. Kings, Queens, & In-Betweens will make you feel grateful you got to know these particular humans.” Director Gabrielle Burton helms the indie film production company Five Sisters Productions with her four real-life sisters, making films presented by MGM/Sony, Starz, Showtime, MTV/LOGO, Netflix, AMC/ We Channel, and documentary campaigns for companies including Ford and Victoria’s Secret. Kings, Queens, & In-Betweens has been a six-year passion project, and the Burton sisters are traveling with the film on a national engagement tour to involve communities in discussions on the important issues presented by the film. Burton is also a mom of a young son and daughter; when she happened to go to a drag show in Columbus one night, she was instantly inspired to make this film about an important and current social topic, and working to promote the importance of acknowledging diversity, complexity, and understanding.

POLITICS IS ALL THE TALK
“We have the right to live our lives, with God or without, as we choose. There is a prohibition against the establishment of a state religion in our constitution, and we have the right to choose with whom we live, whom we love and who and what gets to interfere with our bodies. As Americans, men, women, people, gay, straight, LGBTQ. All of us have the human right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” — Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep, at a Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Fundraiser.
“It’s a big country. There are so many places to go visit. The White House might want to take that into account.” — U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel, D-West Palm Beach, promising to meet with the Secret Service to push for changes that would allow the Lantana Airport to operate on a limited basis when President Donald Trump visits Mar Largo, his estate in West Palm Beach. Currently, all flight operations are prohibited within a 30-mile ring when the president visits, costing the airport and related businesses hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost business with each presidential visit.
“Trump took a national security call in Mar-A-Lago dining room? Not only is that a bad way to run a country, it’s a bad way to run a damn dining room!” — Award-winning actress Bette Midler.
“Watergate is the biggest political scandal of my lifetime, until maybe now.” — Veteran newsman Dan Rather, suggesting an emerging scandal over Trump’s relationship with Russia.
LOCAL CHATTER “It’s happening. Sit back and grab some popcorn.” — John B. I think I need to ask what to me is an obvious question: who is Jared Kushner and why does he have so much influence on policy? He’s an entitled 36-year-old who has had everything handed to him in life, and with ZERO government or policy experience. What am I missing?” — Richard R., Wilton Manors Hotspots.LGBT | 25

M
ore than 25,000 LGBTQ residents and allies are expected at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park on Sunday, February 26 from 12 noon to 8 p.m. at the 40th Annual Pride Fort Lauderdale celebration which will be held on the beach for the irst time. “We wanted to create a world class event that would attract both locals and visitors alike,” said Pride Fort Lauderdale President Miik Martorell, who traveled with other board members to 23 different Pride festivals across the country last year to volunteer and promote the city of Fort Lauderdale as a destination. In addition to vendors and entertainment, the festival will also include a Play Zone for LGBTQ families, senior “chill” zone, sports zone and dry area for people in recovery. Admission is FREE. It was a pleasure to sit down with America's Got Talent Season 11 inalist Brian Justin Crum, who will headline this year's festivities, for this exclusive Hotspots Interview: When was the irst time you sang in in front of people? When I was seven I had my irst audition. It was for Peter Pan and I was so scared I peed my pants.
28 | Hotspots.LGBT
By Scott Holland What was your irst paid gig? I did a production of Fiddler on the Roof at the Starlight Theater when I was 15 and I got paid $300 for the entire run, but I got paid! When did you realize that singing was going to be your career? Probably when I started doing theater at 15; I felt there was nothing else I would ever want to do. You have been on Broadway many times. What's that like and what was your favorite show and why? Broadway is an incredible experience. There are so many performers I respect, because of what they learned doing theater. My favorite show was “Next To Normal. “ There were only 10 actors in the show, but it was such an incredible learning experience for me.
Since you had professional experience under your belt, why did you audition for AGT? I think we live in a day and age for creating your own opportunities. I lived in LA for two years and the opportunity came to audition and there was no reason not to. The exposure is so
great and not one that you can ever buy. I got to show the world what I can do as a performer. Did you consider not being “Out” on AGT? It wasn't ever really a question for me, it's just who I am. I will not pretend to be someone I am not just to try and achieve a level of success. How was the audition process for AGT? And what was the entire experience like? I had a great time with the audition process, it was surprisingly easy. I loved doing the show, and I made very good friends with the crew and producers. As a whole they respected me and what I did. I stayed close with Nikki Leonti and So ie Dossi. What has life been like since AGT's inale? Busy, really busy. I am traveling and recording a lot. The show changed my life. It also gave me a great platform to speak out about LGBT rights and I have gotten really involved with the Trevor project. I could not be more thankful! What should the south Florida audience expect from your performance at Pride Fort Lauderdale? I haven't determined a set list yet, but I am going to try and focus on my original stuff that people haven't heard yet, but of course I will also do a couple favorites from AGT. What's ahead for you? The unknown, it's scary and exciting. My life can go in many different directions, but I am ighting for the direction of success and a music career I can thrive in. I am working really hard to make it happen.
The festival will feature nearly 100 vendors, food carts and booths, and a star-studded entertainment line-up: 12 p.m. DJ Wendy Hunt, pioneer female DJ during the disco era
2 p.m. DJ A.J. Reddy, popular local DJ
4 p.m. Grammy-nominated gay country singer Ty Herndon

6 p.m. Brian Justin Crum, “America's Got Talent” 2016 inalist

He has played almost every major circuit event all over the world, including Winter Party Festival, Black Party, White Party Miami, Song Kran Bangkok, New Year's Rio at The Week, Atlantis Cruises, among others. A staple at major clubs across North America, Brazil and Asia, while holding multi-year residencies in several key markets across the world, his name is synonymous with having an amazing and unique musical experience. Joe Gauthreaux is the headline DJ at Pride Fort Lauderdale on the beach this Sunday, February 26, and will have you experiencing a musical journey you won't soon forget.
[exclusive interview] by Scott Holland
It was a pleasure to sit down with Joe, just days prior to his appearance at Pride for this exclusive Hotspots Interview.
When did you realize you wanted to be a DJ? I wanted to be a DJ when I first started going to the clubs. I loved how free I felt going into a nightclub. The freedom, and the energy the DJ gave the club is what peaked my interest. I also fell in love with Music from a
38 | Hotspots.LGBT
kid. I was the one making mixed tapes for all my friends.
What was your first residency, and how did that feel? It was Oz in New Orleans. I walked in there and begged them to let me have a shift, and they did. They had another Saturday night DJ that wasn't working out so well and one Saturday he got sick and I filled in and the
response was so good, the next week I was the Saturday night resident DJ. You have traveled all over the world. What are your favorite cities to play? One of my favorite cities to play is in my home town of New York. I feel the most comfortable and I know I can take the most risks and the crowd will go along with me. I also love Chicago, Atlanta, Brazil and, of course, Miami.
You have done many remixes, what are some of your favorites? It's not an official remix, but it is my favorite is “Call Me” by Blondie.
You co-own your own music label “Prop D Recordings” along with DJ Grind. How did that come about and tell me more about the label? I started it as a place to release my own music. I wanted to do something to set myself apart and express myself on a personal level. I finally got myself to a point in my career that I could write my own music and feel proud of it and get it out there. However, I got a better response than I anticipated. DJ Grind and I formed a friendship when he remixed my single “You are my Family” and then we worked on more projects together. He released his next single on my label. He basically complimented me and we decided to work together and take this to the next level. We are now bringing on other artists that we believe in and that fit the message that we are trying to get out. You are now a Billboard Recording Artist, how did that feel when it happened? It's nice to have a voice in the dance community and to know that what you are playing matters to the fans.
What separates you from other DJs? I think what has separated me is that I haven't held on to a certain sound. I have always adapted myself to what's happening now.
Other than DJing, what do you like to do for fun? I like to go to the movies, stay active and stay fit. I don't really have a hobby other than music.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid comes to the Broward Center
A
spectacular new production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid kicked off at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, February 22 for a limited two week run. Featuring the critically acclaimed work of Director Glenn Casale, this beloved tale of a young mermaid’s coming-of-age adventure is told like never before. Casting includes Diana Huey as Ariel and Matthew Kacergis as Prince Eric, with Broadway’s Jennifer Allen as Ursula and Steven Blanchard as King Triton. Melvin Abston, Connor Russell and Jamie Torcellini round out the cast as Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle.
This timeless Disney musical is based on the hit animated 1989 Disney film The Little Mermaid, which was loosely based on the Hans Christian Anderson tale. The show follows headstrong Ariel, no longer content to live on the ocean floor under her father, King Triton’s rule. Convinced she’ll only find happiness on land, she sets off to find a world where she belongs, battling a cruel sea witch and finding true love along the way. The film earned three Academy Award
48 | Hotspots.LGBT
nominations and four Golden Globe nominations, winning the awards for Best Song (“Under the Sea”) and Best Score in both ceremonies. The soundtrack won the Grammy Award for Best Album for Children and the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for A Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. The Broadway production appeared in 2007 under Director Francesca Zambello. In 2012, Director Glenn Casale was invited to re-imagine the show, making significant plot changes, introducing aerial elements and featuring a new set design by Bob Crowley that emulates a pop-up book. Casale’s changes are reflected in this production.
This stellar cast is joined by Brandon Roach as Flotsam, Frederick Hagreen as Jetsam/Prince Eric Cover, Allen Fitzpatrick as Grimsby and Dane Stokinger as Chef Louis. Also swimming under the sea are Kristin Burch, Venny Carranza, Lisa Karlin, Michael McGurk, Amanda Minano, Taylor Niemeyer, Becca Orts, Marco Ramos, Robbie Roby, James Shackelford, Brian Steven Shaw, Momoko Sugai, Brenna Wagner, Michael Wordly and Brittany Zeinstra.
It was a pleasure to sit down with the lead Diana Huey who plays Ariel for this exclusive Hotspots Interview. By Scott Holland Were you always a performer, even as a kid or when did it start? I always grew up doing the arts…dancing and singing. I got into theater when I was in middle school, and I never stopped. My family knew from the age of 3.
What was your first professional/ paid gig? My very first real gig was my senior year of college as I did a show called “Rodgers And…” It was a cabaret review of the Rodger and Hammerstein musicals. Martin Charnin was in the room. The University I attended did not allow us to do shows out of school, but I got special permission and I got the job on the spot and it was very exciting. Other than Ariel, what has been your favorite role to play and why? For me it’s definitely Kim in Miss Saigon. It was the most rewarding piece of theater for me to do. You are a Helen Hayes Award Winner for Best Leading Actress for Signature Theatre’s Miss Saigon. How amazing was it to win that award and how has it helped your career? I won it for my first job outside of Seattle. It was huge, and doing that show convinced me to permanently leave Seattle and move to New York. I totally stepped outside of the box, but that show gave me the confidence. It was a huge changing point for me. So yes, it helped my career because it convinced me to go for it.
What should the South Florida audiences expect from this production of the Little Mermaid? I think they should expect a really good time as you get to see and hear all your favorite songs from the movie. It is an expanded story, but we get to delve into each character more. But all the songs were written by Alan Menkin so it’s the same feel.
Diana Huey brings Ariel to life on stage for a limited two week run in South Florida Photo Credits: Mark & Tracy Photography
Also, in this touring version we are flying in harnesses to simulate swimming. It is so much fun. It’s done by “Flying by Foy” who did Peter Pan and Wicked and they are amazing. On Broadway they were on Roller Skates, but now we fly and it gives a much better and realistic feel.
uDisney’s The Little Mermaid plays through Feb 22 to March 5. Tickets are available at the Broward Center AutoNation Box Office, 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33312, browardcenter.org or call 954.462.0222. Orders for groups of ten (10) or more may be placed by calling 954.660.6307. Ticket prices start at $35. For more information on Diana Huey, go to DianaHuey.com

scar winning director Dustin Lance Black has written and created When We Rise, a seven part miniseries that tells the story of real life Americans who helped move our country forward and fought for the rights of the LGBT community. The show, which had to be slightly rescheduled due to the new president’s address to Congress, will air on ABC starting on Monday, February 27- Friday, March 3. It will not air on Tuesday, February 28 due to the address to congress. It will show from 9-11 p.m. each night. According to ABC’s website: “This mini-series event chronicles the real-life personal and political struggles, set-backs and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBT men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the U.S. Civil Rights movement, from its turbulent infancy in the 20th century to the once unfathomable successes of today.” Black was able to bring some of the biggest names in Hollywood into the project which is sure to bolster ratings and make this series a major topic of water cooler conversation when it airs. Recently, while addressing a room full of reporters and TV critics, Black addressed how divided the country at this moment in time when
When We Rise Cast Photo: queer.mk
he told them “I don’t see this show as trying to speak to only half of the country — I didn’t write the show for half the country.” Starring in the mini-series are Guy Pearce (“Memento,” “L.A. Confidential”) as LGBT activist Cleve Jones, Mary-Louise Parker (“Weeds,” “Angels in America”) as women’s rights leader Roma Guy, Rachel Griffiths (“Brothers and Sisters,” “Six Feet Under”) as her wife, social justice activist Diane, Michael K. Williams (“Boardwalk Empire,” “The Wire”) as African-American community organizer Ken Jones and Ivory Aquino as transgender-activist Cecilia Chung. Also joining the cast are Austin McKenzie (“Spring Awakening”) as Younger Cleve Jones, Emily Skeggs (“Fun Home”) as Younger Roma Guy, newcomer Jonathan Majors as Younger Ken Jones, and Fiona Dourif (“The Master”) as Younger Diane. Here is a bit more about the real life people who are portrayed in the series. (Provided by ABC.com) Cleve Jones, a young Quaker from Arizona, joined the gay liberation movement in 1972, was mentored by pioneer gay-rights leader Harvey Milk, founded the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, and led the National March for Equality in 2009. Ken Jones, an African-American Vietnam veteran, joined the gay-liberation movement in San Francisco, only to discover and confront racism within the gay men’s community. For years he organized
services for homeless youth, worked to diversify the gay movement, and led efforts to confront the devastation of the AIDS epidemic. From rural Maine, Roma Guy is a lesbian and a long-time social justice leader who co-founded the San Francisco Women’s Building. Then, as a Public Health Commissioner, she worked with others to bring healthcare access to all San Franciscans. She is currently a criminaljustice activist. Diane, a lesbian mother and grandmother of three, joined the Women’s Movement in the 1970s in San Francisco, co-founded the Women’s Building and has worked as an HIV/AIDS nurse and social justice activist at San Francisco General Hospital for 33 years. Special guest stars include Henry Czerny, Whoopi Goldberg, Arliss Howard, Sam Jaeger, T.R. Knight, Mary McCormak, Kevin McHale, Rosie O’Donnell, Denis O’Hare, Pauley Perrette, David Hyde Pierce, Richard Schiff, Phylicia Rashad, Rob Reiner and William Sadler. “When We Rise” is executive produced by the Dustin Lance Black (“Milk,” “Big Love,” “J. Edgar”), Gus Van Sant (“Milk,” “Elephant,” “Good Will Hunting”) Laurence Mark (“Julie & Julia,””Dreamgirls,””I, Robot,” “Jerry Maguire”), and Bruce Cohen (“American Beauty,” “Milk,” “Silver Linings Playbook”). Van Sant directs the two-hour premiere of the eight-hour mini-series event. “When We Rise” is produced by ABC Studios.

Welcome to Pride Fort Lauderdale on the Beach, the 40th anniversary of Pride in South Florida. Planning Pride involves much more than hours of meetings, securing sponsors, booking performing artists and renting a stage and tents. For the board of Pride Fort Lauderdale, preparations for this big day started more than a year ago. Many of us traveled—at our own expense—to 23 different cities to volunteer at their Pride festivals and promote our own. Over the past year, we visited larger festivals from New York and San Diego to San Francisco and St Pete. We were also present in many smaller cities in between, including Asbury Park, N.J., Roanoke, Va. and San Jose, Ca. At each festival, we watched and learned, hoping to bring the best ideas back to Fort Lauderdale. At each Pride, it was such a thrill to see those events come together for their organizers. Now, here we are on Fort Lauderdale Beach, where we’re about to see the results of months and months of hard work. This is an important year for the LGBTQ community. Pride Fort Lauderdale (formerly Pride South Florida) was first organized in 1977 as a protest of the popular referendum that overturned a landmark gay rights ordinance in Miami-Dade County. Forty years later, we have seen great advances and even won marriage equality, but we cannot become complacent. Congress and state legislatures across the country are advancing legislation that would roll these accomplishments back. Pride Fort Lauderdale is the first Pride festival in the United States following the inauguration of the new administration and offers an important opportunity for our community to be visible and make our voices heard. Now, more than ever before, we must stand up and be counted and never be afraid to be proud of who we are, how we feel or who we love. Our goal this year, was to create a meaningful event that unites us based on the things we have in common, to remind us that we are so much stronger together than we are apart. And finally, to celebrate the 40 years of accomplishments of the pioneers within our community and beyond. We invite you to join us on Fort Lauderdale Beach on Sunday, Feb. 26 for an exciting entertainment line-up, new activities for our diverse LGBTQ community and one of the most scenic venues possible. Together, we will dance, sing and most importantly, celebrate our history and future as a united LGBTQ community.

ast year, the Board of Pride Fort Lauderdale embarked—at their own expense—on an unprecedented “Pride Tour” to nearly two dozen Pride festivals in cities across the country. They visited large cities, ranging from New York City, Atlanta, San Francisco and San Diego, to smaller festivals in Asbury Park, N.J., Roanoke, Va. and San Jose, Ca. Pride Fort Lauderdale was also represented in Dallas and Austin, Philadelphia, Palm Springs, Las Vegas and, closer to home, St. Petersburg and Orlando. “The goal of the Pride Tour was not only to promote Fort Lauderdale and our Pride festival as a destination, but also to volunteer and observe, with the idea to bring home the best ideas from each of these Pride festivals,” explained Miik Martorell, president of Pride Fort Lauderdale. With support from the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, the team set up a photo booth where thousands of guests took photos for social media and picked up information about Fort Lauderdale attractions.
The team also volunteered at the festivals, collecting tickets, hauling boxes and stocking bars, shuttling guests and entertainers, setting up and tearing down tents and stages, and much more. Christopher Wirth, who is resonsible for Pride finances, noted the team picked up a lot of solid practices, and the festival’s food and beverage operations have benefitted as well, said director Hernan Valverde. “We met so many incredible people,” said Pride director Shawn Manning. “They worked so hard on their festivals and it really was an experience to be there to help. Now, it’s our turn.” Many of the hundreds of photos taken at the Pride Fort Lauderdale booths across the country can be viewed at Facebook.com/PrideFort Lauderdale. The team definitely plans to repeat the Pride Tour this year and will share some of that “sunny” Fort Lauderdale hospitality with LGBTQ communities across the country.

hile we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Pride in South Florida, the board and many volunteers of Pride Fort Lauderdale remember Vivien “Miss Vicky” Keller, who passed away last year. In a column for South Florida Gay News, Jesse Monteagudo, a former board member, wrote these eloquent words about Miss Vicky, who volunteered as a board member of Pride Vivien “Miss South Florida/Fort Lauderdale for nearly its entire 40-year history: “It was in the early ‘80s that Vicky began her decades-long involvement on the Board of Pride South Florida. I was a member of the Pride Board back then; and Vicky and I had some great times together, planning and working the early Pride Festivals at the long-gone Hollywood Sportatorium. This was the golden age of Pride South Florida, when a small group of dedicated activists, some of whom are no longer with us, created a form of community celebration at a time when many of us were succumbing to AIDS. For much of that time, Vicky was the only woman on the Board of Pride South Florida; and she worked as hard as any of the men on the Board. Later, when the rest of us moved on to other endeavors, Vicky remained on the Board of Pride South Florida; and she would have continued on the Board until this day had her health permitted it. Vicky served on the Board of Pride South Florida for almost 40 years; a record that will not be broken in a long time. Though Vicky was a heterosexual woman, she did more for South Florida’s LGBT community than all but a handful of LGBT community members. When the AIDS epidemic began in the early 1980s, Vicky met with other activists at the old Marlin Beach Hotel and founded AIDS Center One; the first group of its kind in Broward County. When gay men’s choral groups flourished in our community, Vicky saw a need and founded WomynSong, South Florida’s first and still only lesbian

chorus. If AIDS Center One was later mired in controversy, and if WomynSong did not endure, it was not Vicky’s fault, for she put all her effort to maintain those organizations. For many years, Vicky served the Church of Our Savior MCC in Boynton Beach as Minister of Music, pianist and choir member. She was also an active member of Congregation Etz Chaim, serving on the Vicky” Keller Board and reading prayers at services in her own inimitable style. Vicky was also involved in the local chapter of SAGE, Senior Action in a Gay Environment, where I had the honor of escorting her to SAGE events. In an often divisive community, Vicky was above controversy, loving everyone and working for the good of all. Not as well-known as her work with LGBT community organizations are her countless acts of kindness for members of the LGBT community, her community. She adopted a gay son, Michael Keller, whom she adored and who she took care of during his struggle with AIDS. Vicky also assisted other LGBT youth who were rejected by their families, often to her own financial detriment. When my partner, Michael Greenspan, developed dementia, Vicky visited him at his assisted living facility, sang and played the piano for him, and even gave him a CD player so he could play music in his room. Though Vicky suffered from financial and health problems during her final years, she kept up her spirits and her dedication to her community...I am going to miss Vicky; her kindness, her sincerity, and her ability to bring out the best in all of us. Like George Bailey in the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life,” the world would have been much worse off if Vicky had never lived in it. We are grateful that she did, for nine decades of untiring work and great love. Thanks to Vicky, our community is a much better place and we are much better people for having known her.”

World Class DJs come to Miami Beach to spin for Winter Party
very year, the gay community in Miami says goodbye to days of no humidity and 70 degree temperatures with the weeklong Winter Party celebration. Since 1994, our community has come together to raise funds for those effected by HIV/AIDS. What started as a once a year party has morphed into a series of parties that are a major fundraiser for the National LGBTQ Task Force. Winter Party is known for bringing some of the biggest names in the music world to town, and this year is no exception. With plenty of returning faces, you are sure to find that your favorite DJ will be in town spinning at one of the famous parties. However, keep your eyes out for a few new additions who are making their South Florida debuts and promise to make this year’s events HOTTER THAN EVER! Here is a condensed version of some of the talent you can expect to see, for a complete list of talent, visit WinterParty.com. Stay tuned to Hotspots, next week we will bring you a lineup of all the hottest events that make Winter Party the place to be in Miami.

DJ Dawson AKA Justin Dawson was the winner of 2015 Matinee USA’s DJ search. Dawson is best known for his ability to smoothly blend deep and underground sounds with high energy tech, electronic, and circuit house beats. This year for Winter Party, Dawson will take control of the dance floor at Elevate on Friday, March 3. You can find him on Facebook at facebook.com/DJDawsonNYC

Nacho Chapado is a Spanish DJ from Barcelona who is making his Winter Party debut at Heat on Friday, March 3. He has surrounded himself in music from an early age, not just working as a radio D.J. but also holding down various positions with a number of record companies and soon got the taste for not just DJ-ing live, but also engrossing himself into the recording studio. Follow him on Facebook at Facebook.com/nachochapado

Israeli born, Aron Abikzer lives in New York City but he spends most of his time traveling the world spinning at the hottest LGBT events. Abikzer is no stranger to Miami audiences, hopefully he will get hot enough to take his shirt off and show off those furry abs for the party boys at Winter Party this year. He will take over the ones and twos at Ignite on Thursday, March 2. Follow him on Facebook at Facebook. com/djaronnyc

An international artist and one of Mexico´s house scene’s biggest names, Lo is the Dj Residente at Karmabeat and Arena Festival. His Dancefloor talent, in very short time, has given him a privileged status, having shared the DJ booth with such greats as Isaac Escalante, Offer Nissim, Manuel de Diego, Chris Cox, Filipe Guerra, Stephan Grondin, Nacho Chapado, Ana Paula & Oscar Velázquez. Along with DJ Aron, Lo will be spinning at Winter Party’s Ignite on Thursday, March 2. When asked about coming back to Miami to play at Winter Party he told Hotspots: “I am so excited to come back to Miami and happy to get the chance to see my friends from all over the world. tErik Vilar
Erik is a Brazilian DJ who others describe as the type of guy with an “old soul”. It is hard to believe that he’s only 21, although it’s easy to realize that he has the whole package: he’s really sexy, he’s got a huge world-wide fan base, and his performances are super high energy. With little more than one year experience, he has landed gigs at some of Brazils hottest events like Sao Paulo and Recife Gay Pride, and Hell & Heaven (2016) where he played Winter Party Festival’s event. His performance there got him an invitation to be part of Winter Party Festival 2017 where he’ll spin at Illuminate II, the Block Party by Palace on Sunday, March 5. Hit him up on Social media. He’s at facebook.com/erik.vilar.3 or instagram.com/erikvilar
tRosabel MIAMI
The U.S. remixing duo Rosabel comprised Chicago-based DJ/producer Ralphi Rosario and Miami-based DJ/producer Abel Aguilera. They debuted in the late ‘90s while working on records by Donna Summer and Gloria Estefan. The duo is a mainstay in the South Florida circuit scene and have performed at Winter Party events in the past. This year, they are back to headline the biggest event of the week, The Beach Party on Sunday, March 5. Check them out on facebook at Facebook.com/djsrosabel.

We’re flying in talent from four continents, representing nine countries. We’re also pumping up the size of our Under One Sun Pool Party on Saturday by moving the party to The Deauville Beach Resort – one of Miami’s largest pool decks overlooking the white sands of Miami Beach. A highlight of the weekend will be The Beach Party, where Rosabel will spin as Festivalgoers dance into the night. We also offer various social events including ArtScape, a VIP Cocktail Reception at the New World Symphony. We’re excited to once again be partnering with Miami Film Festival for a film screening at The Regal South Beach Stadium 18 & IMAX.

Bona Italian Restaurant on Wilton Drive, Wilton Manor, is one of those places that you need to rediscover if you haven't visited in a while. Now under the new ownership of Glen Weinzimer (of Smart Ride fame), and with the expertise of Mark Byrd, Bona is better than ever. The dÊcor is being upgraded and there are plans for Avi Ram, famed airbrush artist and contestant on Skin Wars, Season 2, to paint a mural. Gone are the 150 | Hotspots.LGBT
plastic coverings over the tablecloths, now replaced with white butcher paper. But the food is what matters most. The menu is basically the same with all the great Italian sauces, selections and quality for which Bona has been known. I am always in the mood for calamari and use that as a litmus test for how the rest of the meal will be. The Fried Calamari ($13) has been perfected to an art form. When paired with their Garlic Knots ($5.99), the flavor profile is amazing. While dining out, it is always worthwhile to engage your server who typically knows the best items on the menu. I went
with the recommendation of the Chicken Cyriac ($19.95), named in honor of the head chef. The dish starts with spicy blackened chicken, is crowned with an amazing garlic cream sauce with toasted almond slices and then placed over rigatoni pasta. You will definitely need to save some of your garlic bread knots to sop up the sauce for this dish. Are you looking for seafood? The Jumbo Shrimp and Scallop Scampi ($26.95) is incredible. On the next visit I will definitely order the Fazzoletti ($29.95) which has bite-sized gourmet pasta stuffed with fontina cheese and prosciutto and comes with a carbonara sauce with bacon,

onion, and peas. For those looking for something on the lighter side, Bona will gladly substitute fresh spinach for any pasta. They have thought about everything and are willing to go the extra mile to make everyone's meal exceptional. To wrap up this fantastic meal and dining experience, Glen and his crew brought out some amazing desserts from Mimi's Italian Restaurant in Hollywood. Bona has decided to go with perfection and quality instead of “thaw-and-serve from a food company. The cannoli ($5.95) was fresh while managing to be both
creamy and crunchy. Simply stated, it was heaven in my mouth. Even though I do not like the taste of coffee, Mimi's tiramisu ($5.95) was light and airy and the whipped cream was delicate and flavorful. If you are in the neighborhood, stop for a cappuccino and a dessert if a full meal isn't among your plans. It could be a great end to an evening out. HOLLYWOOD | INSIDE & OUT
In March of 2000 in Palm Springs, I was cast in Ronnie Larsen's new play, "Shooting Porn" - not to be confused with his hit play "Making Porn". "Shooting Porn" is the stage version of his award-winning documentary of the same name. Ronnie may have some good ideas, but the well runs dry when it comes to titles! This play had opened a few months earlier in LA, and Ronnie asked me to take over the role of the narrator when it moved to Palm Springs with most of the original cast. While I'm sure there was drama (there always is), I look back on this experience quite nostalgically. And now, almost 17 years later, "Shooting Porn" is playing at the Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale. Although I wasn't available to reprise my role, I was able to help out during the rehearsal period.

It's been fun working with Kyle Garcia, who plays my part and makes it his own. Watching Ronnie, once again, transform into the Chi Chi La Rue of the 1990s is nothing short of staggering. The talented and attractive cast is enhanced (in more ways than one) by actor and "DNA" fitness model Adam Davenport; he's as nice as he is stunning. The first week was completely sold out, and I predict a healthy run through March 12. What few tickets are left can be purchased at RonnieLarsen.com. Whenever we get complacent about the strides the LGBT community has made, we only have to turn on the news to remember that we have miles to go. Angeles LGBT Center. The wall was repainted in a matter of hours. Surveillance footage is being reviewed in hopes of catching the perpetrators - who are, perhaps, in need of a dictionary. A French-Cuban gay p@rn star recently ran into trouble at Ben Gurian Airport in Israel. Ibrahim Moreno (no relation to Rita) flew to Tel Aviv to "perform" in a club. Moreno claims that he was targeted when entering the country because of his Muslim name. He believed that would be the worst thing to happen on his trip, but, no...it was only a sign of what would come later. When it was time to fly home, Ibrahim was detained for close to three hours and interrogated by four customs officials. His luggage was thoroughly examined, many of his toiletries were discarded,

Playhouse is hosting a developmental run of a new play about Tennessee Williams called "God Looked Away". Pacino, naturally, is playing Williams. Clayton has been cast as his "rental companion". Needless to say, while costumes are not necessarily mandatory, acting chops are. We hear that
Clayton gets to flex his thespian muscles, while showing off some of his more superficial ones - and that he does so with aplomb. The play runs through March 19, but you can get a glimpse of him in action on BillyMasters.com. Yet another perfect segue into an "Ask Billy" question. Patrick in Texas writes, "What ever happened to that James Franco movie about 'XY' magazine? That hot boy from 'Teen Wolf' was in it. Did it ever come out??” "I Am Michael" played a few film festivals and got a little buzz. But, like most James Franco movies, it was considered too uneven and artsy. It turned up On Demand a week or two ago, so you can check it out there. I suspect most of you will be specifically interested in the three-way scene between Franco, Zachary Quinto and Charlie Carver. Since it's worth seeing, I'll post it on my website.

and he was strip-searched! Israel's version of TSA says they did nothing unusual and that "items that are prohibited on flights in hand luggage are confiscated as is the norm all over the world.” The first lady has filed a $150 million lawsuit against the "Daily Mail" for repeating a rumor that she may have once been an escort. What I find interesting is the wording of the suit. It is alleged that she was poised to embark on a "unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as an extremely famous and well-known person, as well as a former professional model, brand spokesperson and successful businesswoman, to launch a broad-based commercial brand in multiple product categories, each of which could have garnered multi-million dollar business relationships for a multi-year term during which plaintiff is one of the most photographed women in the world." I took special note of the term "could have". I also wonder how the reporting of this rumor thwarted such an opportunity. Kim Kardashian was videotaped being banged around like a human piñ ata, and it made her a star! In short order, little Garrett Clayton appeared as Brent Corrigan in "King Cobra" and headlined NBC's live presentation of "Hairspray". Now he's sharing the stage with Judith Light and Al Pacino! When three isn't a crowd, it's time to end yet another column. I hate to toot my own horn, but it's time for a little celebration. It's once again Billy's birthday. And you can join in the festivities on www.BillyMasters.com - the site that doesn't look its age. Feel free to send your best wishes along to me at Billy@BillyMasters.com and I promise to get back to you before Garrett Clayton appears in his first Ronnie Larsen production! STRIPPERS AND COCAINE: Trump’s Washington, DC
LGBT member of Congress speaks to local leaders in South Florida

rysten Sinema is in her third term in ofice, representing Arizona’s District 9 in the US Congress, and is the deputy Whip for the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives. Outspoken and unconventional, the bisexual, spontaneous, and attractive Congresswoman is the cochair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus. Her liberal take on government follows along strictly Constitutional lines. It

therefore comes as no surprise that her advice to the LGBT community in South Florida is not to hysterically attack the new president, including all the current name-calling that, while based on wit, is counterproductive at its core. Not that she wants to give the man too much of a break. While hardly a fan of the newly elected president, Sinema sat down at the W Hotel Fort Lauderdale with community leaders
including activists Irwin Drucker and Michael Emanuel Rajner, plus Vita Nova founder Leo Armbrust, realtor Michael Hack-Davis, and Wilton Manors’ Mayor Gary Resnick to warn that it is democracy itself which needs protection under the new president, and, with it, the constitution of the Unites States. “It’s a crazy time,” Sinema told us. “Our president does not believe in democracy; he believes in himself. And if you believe in democracy, you recognize that there are three branches of government. And each of them provides the check and the balances on the other. While the president is issuing multiple executive orders every day, the legislative branch is essentially broken. We hear silence from Congress. The Republicans are afraid to speak out, and the Democrats always think everything is going to turn out okay. And the judicial branch is under attack.” For Krysten Sinema, the ascension of #45 from candidate to dictator was not the surprise it was to many, and she was vocal about his chances of winning to her Arizona constituency as early as the start of last year’s run for the presidency. “Just think about it,” Congresswoman Sinema said. “There was Hilary with her binders and pantsuits going around lecturing us, essentially telling us to eat our peas. There was going to be no dessert. She told us that we had got to buckle down and do the hard work.” By comparison, there was the other candidate, who told us to come on. We’ve got strippers and cocaine.” While he might not have meant it literally, or maybe he did, the message to the middle of

the country was clear. Hillary was a prude. All work…and no results. He was locker room talk, and was giving the middle inger to government right at the time that much of America was feeling neglected, overlooked by Washington, and disengaged from it. So, of course, he was going to get their votes. The question now is what to do given the reality we face. For Sinema, our mission as LGBT voters is clear. “We must protect the constitution,” she says, for it will not protect itself. It is clearly under siege by the executive branch. “The president is busy right now iring anyone, in all the various departments, who might stand up to him, and replacing them with people who are going to give him a clear shot to do what he wants. “There is a lot of fear in Congress right now,” Sinema says. “And I can say that because I am the most bipartisan representative in Congress right now. I speak to everyone; and I see the fear.” It is business as usual for the president, who does business through threats and intimidation. “All he has to do is get rid of people within his agencies who stand up for the law, and he can literally do anything—or try to.” Our shield against tyranny is the Constitution, which, as we’ve seen, is under ire. It is imperative that we all remain vocal, and refuse any compromise which would impugn its integrity. At risk is nothing less than the America that we know. Necesito un Descanso de las Vacaciones |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
con Scrappy Pérez
¡Qué fin de semana he tenido!
¿A quien estoy engañando?
I Need a Break from Vacation What a weekend I've had! I told my bartender my Spanish accent gets really strong the more I drink, so he needs to cut me off if he suddenly feels like he's talking with his cleaning lady, Guadalupe, or the Puss in Boots from Shrek. He forgot all about that, so I left the club with my tab still opened, wearing a shirt that I'm pretty sure I was not wearing on the way in and missing one shoe because I'm a princess. So here I am rocking the drunken Cinderella look on my way to the cab. And when I say “cab” I mean getting inside
176 | Hotspots.LGBT
a shopping cart being pushed by a homeless guy who happened to be passing by my house that night. I really have to stop drinking! Well, it looks like holidays and vacation time is over, and I can tell because there are less tourists and more parking spaces everywhere I go. During the holidays, I get to walk two miles to find my parked car because I happen to live where the world comes to vacation, the city of Orlando. Every time my Grindr app refreshes, I get hundreds of new faces who are walking around Universal Studios (which happens to be seven miles from me) on their vacations and asking me to meet them at a hotel nearby. Nothing says "Pretty Woman" like meeting a guy for the first time in his hotel room. I went on a date with a guy once and we had a great time so I messaged him the next day for a second date. Unfortunately, he was already 1,000 miles away by that time. I wish he told me he didn't live here to avoid the two days that followed after of me crying over his picture and eating a tub of ice cream. What I'm most happy about is that the cold
weather is gone. What´s up with the cold weather here anyway? I mean, don't older people move to Florida because the hot weather is good for them?! In the winter, lifeguards and water craft operators are instructed to ask customers where they're from as opposed to "do you know how to swim?" because they know all about the nutshrinking water temperature that we have down here in winter. I can always tell who's visiting from the north because they're the only ones taking a dip in the water at the beach in winter time. Our winter is their summertime... to me, it might as well be Fargo in December. I'm from the Caribbean so that little blast of cold is enough for me. It's so cold that I hold up a picture of a thumb on my phone when I'm hitchhiking because I refuse to take my mittens off. My dog was freezing too, and I can tell how desperate he was because I saw him wearing the neighbor's cats for warmth. If I were to go on vacation, I would definitely pick a place where the weather is warm, the beaches are refreshing and there's a shirtless hot guy in a Hawaiian skirt handing me a coconut. Who am I kidding? I don't really have the time or the budget to go on vacation whenever I want. A vacation to me is shutting off my phone and doing whatever the hell I want (or whoever for that matter!) for two days. I do hope your vacation time was a lot more exciting than mine. Have a great month!

NEED WOOD
By Woody Miller
SMOOTH AND SILKY? NO THANKS!
H
ey Woody! I know I’ve missed out on some great one-night stands, even relationships because the guys weren’t my physical type. I’ve tried but I just can’t get into smooth guys. It feels like I’m screwing a salmon. The other night I met the perfect guy—great looks, warmth of a furnace, but there wasn’t any hair on his legs so I made some excuse and practically fled the place. I’m feeling shallow and guilty about turning down guys just because they don’t have the exact physical look that I like. How do I deal with this? — Rough edges
y Dear Rough Edges: Don’t confuse shallowness with preference. Are you shallow because you prefer tall guys? Athletic guys? Or guys who know the difference between its and it’s? Not only have you developed misguided guilt, you’ve also managed to develop a scarcity mentality while sitting in front of the biggest Man-Buffet ever seen. Dude, are you blind? Most guys are hairy! And half the smooth ones are faking it. They’d probably latch on to you just to cut their waxing bills. As far as your guilt, it’s caused by letting a physical characteristic rob you of an emotional connection. You can’t “CHANGE” your preference because that’s impossible. But it is possible to expand your “body bandwidth.” Here’s how: 1. Tell the faux smoothies to “Grow it out.” Many of the guys you’ve turned down
are shaving and waxing because we’ve idealized smooth torsos. Pick up any gay publication and count the number of stories and ads featuring men with hairy bodies. Trust me, you can do it with one hand and no fingers. 2. Cover the outer and discover the inner. Put more emphasis on the inner qualities than the outer goodies. Ever notice that beauty is right up there with Spackle in the lesbian Desire-O-Meter? It’s because they attach erotic desire to something other than their partner’s physical appearance. Like power. (And experience, humor, trucks, flannel, boots, nipple rings, strap-ons) WAIT! I’m off-topic…. 3. Date the sparsely furred. You need erotic experiences with smooth or nearsmooth guys and the best way to do that is to systematically immerse yourself in less and less hairy guys. The vast majority of guys are somewhere between smooth and hairy. Start with the guys who are medium hairy and work your way down to the least hairy guy who turns you on. 4. Watch p@rn with lightly hairy guys. Sometimes a good video opens you up to things you thought you’d never get into. Like mustaches. Or as they call them in jail, “Prison pu$$y.” Body type is not a conscious choice. You can’t change it, but with the right attitude and the right techniques, you can expand it.

JUICING: 5 Facts You Need to Know By Tom Bonanti 196 | Hotspots.LGBT
Yes, diets packed with fruits and vegetables reduce your risk for chronic conditions and diseases like cancer, heart disease and Type II diabetes. Yet, odds are most people aren’t getting nearly the five servings a day recommended by the USDA. What’s a healthy body to do? Enter the popular craze known as juicing – a healthy, practical trend that can help you pack precious nutrients into your diet.
HERE’S ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW: oWhat’s the buzz? Juicing extracts the juice from fresh fruits and vegetables. The resulting liquid contains most of the vitamins, minerals and plant chemicals (phytonutrients that fight inflammation; antioxidants which combat damaging free radicals, defective molecules in the body that cause aging and disease.) Proponents of juicing claim these nutrients are more easily absorbed by your body since it is unencumbered with digesting fiber. But remember, you need fiber to stay regular, feel satiated; fiber also combats bad cholesterol (LDL).
oPick the “right stuff” Vitamins like C and
B’s are more easily absorbed as juice. Others like A, E and K are best taken through the full digestive process. Similarly, some vegetables, such as tomatoes, lentils and squash provide more nutritional value when cooked or eaten whole.
YOUR BEST BETS FOR JUICING WITH “VEGGIES”:
• Leafy greens (spinach, collard greens, Swiss chard, kale, and mustard greens) • Broccoli • Red bell peppers • Asparagus • Garlic • Beets (for lowering blood pressure) • Ginger root (for fighting infection)
BEST FRUITS FOR JUICING:
• Kiwi • Papaya • Strawberries • Grapefruit • Oranges • Lemons
oGo organic; when juicing, opt for organic
fruits. This is produce you’d pick out of your own garden or backyard, or find in a farmer’s market. Organic fruits and vegetables are less likely to contain pesticides or be artificially ripened with chemicals.
oJuicing for weight loss: Juice fasting is the
practice of drinking only juice for a few days to cleanse the digestive tract, detoxify the body and help you lose weight. It is better than simple fasting on water and no food, since juice still provides the body with essential nutrients.
oJuicing is a great addition to any diet: Most people don’t get enough water or eat enough fruits and vegetables daily. Juicing allows you to meet these two needs while making healthy, fresh juices in the convenience of your home.
If juicing sounds like it’s for you, go to the “Juicing Book” at www.juicingbook.com for facts, recipes, and handy tips to help you put some miles on that blender. Here’s my favorite energy juice recipe from the above source. Drink it an hour before your workout!
y
PEP RALLY
• ½ green or red pepper • 4 – 6 small carrots • ¾ cup of apple juice
Here’s another recipe that will help you relax in the evening. Drink an hour or so before retiring.
y
SWEET DREAMS • 1 Apple • 4 small carrots • ¼ beet root
