He remains bitter and angry…” –Actor Alec Baldwin, announcing his decision to stop impersonating President Trump on NBC’s Saturday Night Live.

“Governor Rick Scott made the Pulse tragedy a centerpiece in his annual State of the State address. While we are glad the governor spotlighted the Pulse tragedy, we are deeply disappointed that when talking about the worst anti-LGBT attack in our nation’s history, our governor failed to acknowledge the LGBTQ community…”

“I am so frightened at the direction of our country that I do lose sleep over it… I worry for my family, my friends and my future. This is not what America is about. I just wish that more people who supported this man would step up and admit that they have the same fears and concerns… I am very certain that we are facing a crisis of historic proportions.” –Doug Blevins, former Wilton Manors mayoral candidate, on Facebook

Because being different means you make the difference, so f--- ’em.”

7th Annual Fundraiser for

Grateful Paws Coming together to raise money for Fort Lauderdale pet rescue By Scott Holland

U

we Schroeder, Bartender at Georgie's Alibi and owner/ creator of Wolf Cu Custom Leather Fashion Design is presenting the 7th annual fundraiser for Grateful Paws, dog and cat rescue in Fort Lauderdale. The bene it will, once again, be held at Georgie's Alibi/Monkey Bar (2266 Wilton Drive) on March 22 starting at 6 p.m. It was a pleasure to sit down with my buddy Uwe to talk with him about this year's bene it. What can we expect at this year's fundraiser? I am proud to say that for years now I have been able to rely on a team of people that have helped me to organize the event and have brought it to so much success. Like every year the event will start with the VIP cocktail reception from 6 till 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person and available at Alibi or at the door that night. Each ticket will include catering by Alibi, complimentary cocktails and irst chance to "buy now" any item from our silent auction. At 8 p.m. the event will open to the general public

26 | Hotspots.LGBT

and everyone can participate in the silent auction, meet our sponsors, buy 50/50 raf les, and a few more surprises. We also have a special raf le where the winner can pick between three grand prices. Tickets are limited and are $20 each. Shortly after 9 p.m. it's show time with the performers of the Alibi and some special guests. Why is this year's event particularly special for you? My friends, and those close to me in the community, know that 2016 was an extremely dif icult and challenging year for me. Last May, I suered a brain hemorrhage and came very close to losing my life. It's a miracle how well I recovered and I want to use this opportunity to say thank you to the professionals at Holy Cross Hospital, my friends, the Alibi family and everybody that has stood by me during those trying months. I believe I was spared for a purpose and to continue to do as much as I can to help abandoned pets. As an immigrant, especially as a German immigrant being very aware of my countries

history, I feel it's my responsibility to raise my voice about recent events that have me, and so many others, concerned. My country fell victim to fascism when free press was suppressed (Luegenpresse), a religious minority and political opponents targeted by fear and hate, and rhetoric without any proof or base was manipulated into people's mind by propaganda. This did not happen overnight; the darkness crept in slowly but with a precise plan. We should be very aware about that moment in history because the time to act and rise is limited. Of course‌Do I have a crystal ball? No. I wish nothing more than to be proven wrong and that in a few years from now we have fair immigration, healthcare for all, and the best education for our children. The problem is; what if I am right? Crimes against LGBT members have increased dramatically as well as threats against Jewish communities. Muslim has become the word for terrorists and in incredible numbers they are coming out of the dark and showing their ancient racism. This is why this year's event is also so special. We want to unite people for a great cause; a cause about empathy and compassion. We still see many people out there who care for the greater good. That coming together can

make a great change in our community and beyond. What is your goal for this year? To save as many animal lives as we can. I never set a monetary goal for the event, although last year we raised over $18,000, which made it one of the largest fundraiser on the Drive and one of the most successful pet fundraiser in Fort Lauderdale. I hope we raise a lot and that everybody who comes out has a great time and enjoys the evening. We are always looking for volunteers and especially foster homes since we do not have a shelter. We believe a loving home is better for an animal in distress than a small kennel. I love fostering. Yes, I do get attached but I love to meet the dierent personalities that come with every foster and it's the best feeling in the world when you inally ind them a new forever home. Don't forget to put the Wolf Cu Grateful Paws bene it at the Alibi on your calendar. It's Wednesday, March 22 starting at6 p.m. for VIP ($20) and 8 p.m. for everyone. Hotspots.LGBT | 27

The Tony winning musical

SOMETHING ROTTEN! Makes its debut in South Florida. Cast member Blake Hammond chats with Hotspots By Scott Holland

T

he completely original new musical Something Rotten!, directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Aladdin), with music and lyrics by Grammy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Wayne Kirkpatrick and Golden Globe Award and Tony Award nominee Karey Kirkpatrick and a book by Tony Award nominees Karey Kirkpatrick and best-selling author John O'Farrell, opens at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts March 21, for a limited two week run through April 2, 2017. This hilarious new musical comedy tells the story of brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom, two playwrights stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star Will Shakespeare. When a soothsayer foretells the next big thing in theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, the Bottom brothers set out to write the world's very irst MUSICAL! With the most singing, the most dancing and the most gut-

busting laughs on Broadway, it's something wonderful ... something for everyone ... It's Something Rotten!, “the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years” (Time Out New York)! Nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Something Rotten! comes to South Florida with three principal cast members direct from Broadway: Rob McClure as Nick Bottom, Adam Pascal as Shakespeare and Josh Grisetti as Nigel Bottom. The touring cast also features Maggie Lakis as Bea, Blake Hammond as Nostradamus, Autumn Hurlbert as Portia, Scott Cote as Brother Jeremiah and Jeff Brooks as Shylock. Rounding out the ensemble are Lucy Anders, Kyle Nicholas Anderson, Kate Bailey, Daniel Beeman, Brandon Bieber, Mandie Black, Nick Rashad Burroughs, Ian Campayno, Pierce Cassedy, Eric Coles, Drew Franklin, Juliane Godfrey, Leah Hofmann, Kristie Kerwin, Ralph Meitzler, Patrick John Moran, Joel Newsome, Con O'Shea-Creal and Tonya Thompson.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Blake Hammond for this Hotspots Exclusive interview:

Were you always a performer, even as a kid or when did you get “the bug”? I performed as a kid for my mom on the ireplace, but I started doing theater late in High school. I then studied at the University of Texas in Austin in the theater program. I was lucky enough to go there on scholarship. What was your irst professional/paid gig? My irst paid gig was when I did summer stock in university. I was 19 years old. Other than Nostradamus, what has been your favorite role to play and why? I have two favorites. The irst is when I played Edna Turnblad in Hairspray on Broadway. This was so great because it was my irst time on Broadway and what a great part to play. The other one was The Adams Family where I played Uncle Fester. It was really fun to play a 10 year old boy in a 35 year old's body. I got to be a kid every night. What is your Fantasy role to play? I have to say I would love to sing the songs of Jean Val Jean from Les Miserables, but it's not the type or role I am usually cast in. You have received L.A. Critics, Carbonell, Chicago After Dark and Indy Soap awards. How does it feel when you get these awards and does it ever get

less nerve racking? No, it does not get less nerve racking. I think awards are interesting because it's hard to say who is the best, but I must admit, it is fun to hear your name being called. What should the South Florida audiences expect from this production of the Something Rotten? It is the funniest show I have ever been in, so expect tons of laughs. Our producer, Kevin McCullum, calls it “The Make America Laugh Again Tour.” Also, the cast of this production are absolutely lovely. They are bunch of fun people, and I think it shows on stage. For more information go to: RottenBroadway.com Tickets will be available at the Broward Center AutoNation Box Of ice, 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33312, browardcenter.org or call 954.462.0222. INTERVIEW 5 Questions

PATRICK DECILE LOCAL ACTOR LAND ROLE OF A LIFETIME IN OSCAR-WINNER “MOONLIGHT”

q

By Ian Maloney

Patrick Decile was a teenage college student at Broward College when his Intro to Acting instructor told him about an opportunity to audition for a movie that was being made in Miami. The movie, it turns out was “Moonlight” which just last month won three Academy Awards including Best Picture. It was a pleasure to chat with Patrick Decile who played the bully Terrel in the film.

56 | Hotspots.LGBT

...my message to people who watch the film is that it’s a work of art. You have to appreciate it for what it is. It is talking about YOU somewhere in the movie. Just go see it!

ABOUT YOURSELF. A: I’m 20 years old, I go to Broward College. On the side, I do music, write poetry and I love to perform. I was born and raised in South Florida.

2

Q: HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH “MOONLIGHT?”

A: I was in class one day, my teacher

[introduced me to a couple of people] and said, these are very important people, don’t embarrass me. There were two of us from my class who were pulled out to audition. A couple weeks later, the professor told me they liked me and wanted to see me at call backs. I went to the call back and some more time went by until inally I found out that I had the part to be the bully in Moonlight.

3

Q: WHAT WAS THE FILMING PROCESS

LIKE, BEING ON SET FOR THE FIRST TIME, COMING FROM A NON-ACTING BACKGROUND? A: I was always into acting, that’s why I was in the class, but it was very interesting going on set for the irst time. The camera was looking like a transformer, a really big camera. There were a lot of people with all the extras, but the director just got everyone in line and when it was time to shoot the scene, I was just taking it all in, to be honest with you.

4

Q: TO PEOPLE WHO STILL HAVEN’T

SEEN THE MOVIE, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE TAKEAWAY FOR SOMEONE GROWING UP BLACK AND GAY IN SOUTH FLORIDA. A: The movie has a lot of underlying messages, like growing up without a father or anyone to guide you, being bullied without anyone to really have your back all the way. The mother wanted to have his back, but she got caught up in everything. I think my message to people who watch the ilm is that it’s a work of art. You have to appreciate it for what it is. It is talking about YOU somewhere in the movie. Just go see it!

5

Q: WHAT HAVE THE PAST FEW MONTHS BEEN LIKE FOR YOU? A: Being caught up in all of this has been a wild ride, and I am grateful to be a part of it. I have gotten a bunch of weird messages from people all over the world. I am just trying to stay focused. I’m in school and I’m trying to work off this SAG card. I am working on my music and thinking about that. Catch Patrick at The Neighborhood Star Music Festival in Bass Park (2750 NW 19th Street) in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, March 25.

What was the first drag show you saw? Tell me

about the experience? The first show I attended was Sizzling Sundayz at Wall Street Night Club in Columbus, Ohio. The year was 1991. I can close my eyes and remember I sat alone at the far outer corner of the stage. I was underage but was invited by a new friend who was in the show. I do not know how or when Amanda Kane got a glimpse of my face, but as she reached the end of the runway she yelled out to me to proclaim that "b!tches pay a lot of money for cheeks like yours!!" needless to say the spotlight swung my way and I was totally embarrassed and vowed to never come back to watch another show. I kept my word until less than a year later I was on cast! When did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession? I decided to do drag to get into the grown men night with my underage self. Back in the day, the queens walked through the lines and into the club. It was a crash course cause you had to walk like you been at it for a while. I personally never decided that drag was my profession. Drag has been a tug of war with my adult existence. I knew at age seven that I was more female than male, and the first time I saw drag or even trans people was that first show, so it was refreshing to know it was possible to be me! Drag has always been that fuzzy line. Today I am a personal chef, and still doing drag. Who is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother, and why? My original drag mother was the best "Whitney" I knew, Shante Seville, who is gone too soon. My destiny drag mother is Former Miss Florida FI. Tiffany Middlesex. She started her career at Cesar's in Toledo, Ohio, where I actually got hired to be part of the cast. Who would have thought I would move to Florida and have one of the biggest legends answer me when I say MOM! After moving to Florida, one night I went to the Coliseum for a Gary Santis event. As I walked into the main room, I saw flags boys and the one and only Latrice Royale. Not only is she one of the most talented people I know, she has been and stayed my friend and drag mother through all my crazy days. What's your favorite number to perform and why? My favorite number to perform is my “Sister Act medley and the illusion of Dionne Warwick, because I not only have to resemble her but I must pick up her very distinct mannerisms, like the way she holds a mic and her jaw movement. I change my body position to mimic her walk and stance and all while looking like those words are coming from my soul.

ueens we

Why We Love Her! At 45 years old she can dance the house down like an 18 year old.

Her impersonations are on point!

She has an old school mentality and is always on time!

She went back to school at 40 years old, and proved to us all it's never too late for education or to capture your dreams!

What can I say, I love the challenge! Whoopi Goldberg is a very close second. What's the best thing that has happened to you in drag? The best thing that has happened in drag for me is, honestly, the people I have met and become close to. It is because of those people's support in my life that I have been able to achieve some of the near impossible feats I have accomplished and survived. What differentiates you from other queens? My diversity is what sets me apart. I was taught early in my career that is was not how pretty you are, it's how much you sweat. People want to be entertained. What does the future hold? In my future I see a food truck, specializing in Soul Food, feeding faces and of course, doing drag! Hotspots.LGBT | 65

providing great products and customer service for our customers. I look forward to continuing to be a part of the LGBT community and extremely grateful to everyone who has supported Pride Factory over the last 21 years.” This year Pride Factory plans to celebrate by giving customers the opportunity to save and to win. During month of March, stop by and sign up for your chance to win one of many prizes being awarded throughout the month. Every day brings one new winner of a $10 gift card, and every Saturday we are giving away a gift basket. Additionally, Pride Factory will be offering in store sales and discounts the entire month of March. Pride Factory invites everyone to join them for their Anniversary celebration on Sunday April 2 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be refreshments with additional prizes including many more gift baskets and a grand prize of a $500 shopping spree. There is no purchase necessary, but you must be present to win the anniversary day prizes. When asked what's ahead for Pride Factory, Rocky Bowell (GM) said, “Pride Factory continues to re-invent itself by adding new things into the store. We just added a fetish line form Addicted. Our goal is to do more events in and out of the store. Recently we created an event called 'Shop For A Cause' where we partnered with Poverello. We gave them a percentage of the proceeds of that day which went towards the Poverello AIDS Walk Team. The amount we raised was $925 and since it was for AIDS Walk AHF matched it so they received $1,850. We have an event coming up on April 15 from 5-

7pm. It's a book signing of Andrew Christians new book “Sex=Power=Freedom”, and both Andrew and model Jorge Orlando will be here. During that event we will also feature an Andrew Christian fashion show.”

Don't forget to stop into Pride Factory all month long, and especially on their anniversary extravaganza on April 2 from 5-7pm. Check them out at PrideFactory.com.

el hydro caribbean festival de nuevo en puerto rico

¡Prepárate ya!

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The second Hydro Caribbean festival will take place on April 28-30 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. There are plenty of events planned throughout the weekend in the capital city of Puerto Rico. Some of the biggest clubs in the Caribbean will participate in the festival and this year, organizers are bringing a group of the best known DJs in the gay world to make sure all the people move their hips. This year's host hotel is the San Juan Water Beach Club Hotel. Located in a privileged corner of Isla Verde Beach, the San Juan Water Beach Club Hotel provides a modern eco-Zen

environment where guests can enjoy award-winning service offered with typical Puerto Rican warmth and totally focused on you. A chic rooftop pool with panoramic ocean views, decadent gastronomy and exclusive beachfront location combine to create the ideal destination for the festival. Edwin Toledo, an organizer of the Hydro Caribbean Festival said that the idea of the festival ¨arose from the need to open a new market in the Caribbean, in this case Puerto Rico. We wanted to provide a festival that is much cheaper than other festivals and that gives the opportunity to visitors to have a great time here in Puerto Rico and help drive the country´s economic engine, tourism. Compared to other Caribbean countries, it is cheaper to travel from the US, there´s the food, the music, and so many other different cultural points. So, besides just being a dance music festival, it provides the visitors with the opportunity to enjoy the island. It is the first and only gay festival in the Caribbean and will feature some of the most wildly known DJs within the

gay dance world.¨ Speaking of the lineup of DJs, it's spectacular this year. With 10 DJs, the music won´t stop all weekend long. Among the best known are DJ Aron of Israel, DJ Alex Acosta of Mexico, and DJ Dani Toro of Spain. The list also includes Beth Sacks, DJ Hannah from Miami, DJ Iván Gómez, DJ GSP, DJ Rico Alexis, and DJ Ed Wood and Nina Flowers, both from Puerto Rico. All the events will be held at the host hotel and at Club Circo and Club Kronos. There will be a shuttle between the hotel and all of the off-site events. When I asked Toledo about gay life in Puerto Rico, he said: "There is a fairly big gay life, just like in the Mainland US. Since Puerto Rico it is part of the US, it is quite liberal, there is not much delay in the environment. There are plenty of nightclubs and bars. The festival was widely accepted the first year, and this year is expected to sell out completely. That is what we want, that the Puerto Rican people interact with the visitors. In making the first gay festival in the Caribbean, we are attracting a lot of attention both in Puerto Rico and abroad and it is good because there are so many Puerto Ricans participating in the festival as well as those from outside the country. To enjoy San Juan's nightlife at the Hydro Caribbean Festival, do not hesitate to visit them at HydroCaribbean.com to make reservations at the hotel and buy tickets to the parties.

NEED WOOD

By Woody Miller

MEASURING UP I

‘m 25, bright and easy on the eyes. I thought I had it going on until I started watching amateur p@rn online. I swear to God, every guy I’ve seen had a beer can c@ck! Now I’m so self-conscious about my d!ck I’m embarrassed to pull my pants down in the locker room or the bedroom. Is there a safe, proven way of enlarging my penis? — Pretty, but small

 Dear Pretty but Small: There is only one way to safely enlarge your penis: Lay it on my desk and I’ll whack it with a hammer. You won’t believe how big it’ll get. Believe me, that’s the *safest* way of making your d!ck bigger. With the exception of the two percent of guys who have a “microphallus,” every reputable medical association recommends against penis enlargement surgery. Do it and you’ll probably end up with crooked, lumpy and deformed shafts, erections that point downward, raw nerves caught in scar tissue and luid that chronically collects around the testicles.

Sorry, but contrary to the promise of spam in your inbox, there’s no way to “MAKE YOUR D!CK BIGGER THAN A CLUB!!!” There’s no pill, no pump, no enzyme that’s going to give you “THE MIRACLE OF A 14-INCH HORSE C@ CK!!!! There’s no surgery that’s going to give you “MEATY 10-INCH SCHLONGS!!!! Yes, I know you’d like to “ADD FOUR TERRIFYING INCHES TO YOUR WANG!!!! But I’m afraid the only way you can do that is to borrow Jake Deckard’s d!ck for the weekend. Optical illusions make a lot of us think we’ve got small d!cks. First, video cameras make everything look bigger. So, while there are certainly large schlongs in professional and amateur p@rn, a lot of those “beer can d!cks” have a light beer label. Second, almost everybody else’s penis looks bigger because you’re looking straight at theirs but down at yours. Angles make a difference. If you want to get a better indication of the size of your own thing, don’t look down; look in the mirror.
