You may have heard people (from the northeast) complain about the lack of cultural activities there are here in South Florida. However, I am here to tell you that those sentiments couldn't be further from the truth. While things may slow down in the hot and sticky summer months, we still have quite a few options even then. Right now, we are still in the swing of the high season and this week's Hotspots is proof of that. Cultural events abound and we've got you covered to make sure you know exactly how to plan your calendar. In full swing this weekend is The Slow Burn Theatre Company's “Big River” which is playing at the Broward Center for the Performing Art's Amaturo Theatre through April 2. Check out our feature for more information. Also don't miss our exclusive interview with Russell Hitchcock from 80s sensation Air Supply. Hitchcock will be joined with his longtime bandmate
Graham Russell. The duo hail from Melbourne, Australia and have been performing together since 1975. They will play 3 shows this weekend here in South Florida. You may have noticed a certain Cubana songstress on our cover, how could we not mention that! Miami's own Gloria Estefan will celebrate with the Adrienne Arsht Center at the 11th Season Gala Concert: A Celebration of Women in the Arts. Joining Estefan will be a who's who of A-List ladies like Vanessa Williams, Rita Moreno, and Chita Rivera. Check out our feature on the event for times and ticket information. You won't want to miss it! Rounding out our content this week is: an interview with Dave Cook, Executive Director of Miami Beach Gay Pride, DJ's we love with DJ Sushiman who can be found spinning all over South Florida, Hot Bodies with trainer Tom Bonanti, and of course What's Hot South Florida, Scott Holland's guide to planning your week.

For those of you who are avid readers of this column, you know that just a few weeks ago I wrote about “Grace & Frankie” season two being on DVD. THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO
Hmmm…
WE’LL ALWAYS LOVE WHITNEY
Gay music diva Deborah Cox has recorded an album of Whitney Houston songs from the musical “The Bodyguard”? Noooo! Unfortunately, it’s true, but can we ask…why?
WE’LL SEE THEIR TRUE COLORS
To celebrate Miami Beach Pride 2017 (April 7-9), a number of Miami landmarks will be lit in rainbow colors on the evening of April 8. Called “Pride Lights the Night,” buildings throughout the city will participate in this lighting event in memory of the victims of the Orlando tragedy and their families. Among the landmarks to be lit is The Freedom Tower at 600 Biscayne Blvd in downtown Miami, currently owned by Miami Dade College.
ANOTHER HYPOCRITE?
Republican State Sen. Ralph Shortey, was just caught in a Super 8 Motel room in Moore, Oklahoma, with an underage boy, sparking a police investigation. Shortey, who was Donald Trump’s campaign chairman in that state, studied at Heartland Baptist Bible College in Oklahoma City and is known for his “conservative principles.”
TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN FICTION...
• The television was invented only two years after sliced bread. • There is a McDonald’s fast food restaurant in every continent except Antarctica. • A small amount of stress helps you to remember things better, but a large amount may hinder your memory. • The colder the room you sleep in, odds are high that you’ll have a bad dream. • If you keep a goldfish in a dark room, it will eventually turn pale. • Russia didn’t consider beer to be alcohol until 2011. It was previously classified as a soft drink.

The best chatter on Facebook this week
“I’m worried that a child placement agency may make what is in the best interest of the child a correct decision but be subject to a lawsuit by someone who has a little bit of a leg up by virtue of being in a protective class.” —South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard, who just became the first governor to sign a law legalizing discrimination against LGBTQ people in 2017.
“You know what, Americans have choices, and they’ve got to make a choice. And so maybe, rather than getting that new iPhone that they just love and want to go spend hundreds of dollars on, maybe they should invest in their own health care.” –Rep. Jason Chafetz (R-Utah), telling CNN that obtaining health care is a personal responsibility for Americans.
Say
That Again
“Once I saw we were not the ultimate arbiters of divine truth but flawed human beings, I couldn’t pretend otherwise… I couldn’t justify our actions – especially our cruel practice of protesting funerals and celebrating human tragedy. These shifts in my perspective contributed to a larger erosion of trust in my church, and eventually it made it impossible for me to stay.” —Megan Phels-Roper, daughter of unofficial spokeswoman of the notorious hate group Westboro Baptist Church, based in Topeka, Kansas, explaining why she left the church in 2012.
“They may have been phony in the past, but they’re real now.” –Press Secretary Sean Spicer, referring to the latest national job report which President Trump called “phony” during the Obama administration.
“The whole issue of sexuality is so grey… It’s cool that you don’t have to nail everything down any more. That whole certainty about whether you’re straight or gay or whatever.” –Actress Kristen Stewart, who has openly dated women, telling The Guardian (U.K.) she welcomes a future without labels.
“The Orange One’s new budget would decrease funding to programs such as Meals on Wheels, leaving many of our elderly hungry. Because many can’t cook, a meal is the only thing keeping them out of nursing homes, which they can’t afford. ‘Make America Great Again,’ my ass! Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Enchantment By Scott Holland I think that, like me, some of you will always be kids at heart. I have never fallen out of love with Disney, and if that's you too, you are revved up for non-stop fun with four of your favorite Disney stories when “Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Enchantment” right here in South Florida. The show will play at the BB&T Center in Sunrise on March 30 through April 2 and at the American Airlines Arena in downtown Miami from April 5 through April 9. This action-packed ice spectacular

Dive into adventure with Ariel from Disney's “The Little Mermaid,” as she explores her undersea kingdom. The toys are back in town with heroic action when Buzz, Woody, Jessie and the DisneyPixar “Toy Story” gang escape Sunnyside

Get warmed up for the show and be your best with exclusive moves taught by the mouse that started it all during Mickey's Dance-Along PreShow. From wheels to waves, icy wonderlands to in inity and beyond, see some of every family's favorite Disney moments come to life in Disney On Ice presents “Worlds of Enchantment!” It was a pleasure to sit down with Katie and Dora, who play Anna and Elsa from “Frozen,” for this exclusive Hotspots Interview. What age did you start skating? Dora – I started skating when I was 3 or 4. My mom and grandma were coaches, so I grew up at rink. I had my irst competition at 6. Katie – I started skating when I was 6. My mom took me to an open skate, and I fell in love with it and started competing the next year. It took off from there.
When did you know you wanted to do it professionally? Dora – I always heard about “Holiday Nights” and how the traveling was so nice. It was always in the back of my mind, so when I stopped competing at the age of 18, I tried it out and then I started skating with Disney on Ice when I was 21. Katie – I stopped competing at 18, and I didn't really have any intention of working on the ice. I went to school, got a degree, and worked at Walt Disney World at the park. I found my way back to coaching and choreographing, and from doing that I decided to go back into performing and Disney on Ice was the logical choice.
How did you get your role in Disney On Ice? Dora – I have been touring with them for 15 years. I started as a chorus skater, and then I started getting understudy roles, and eventually I got many principle roles. This role I only got last year. Katie – I auditioned in the spring of 2015, and at the time they were building the “World of Enchantment” show and adding “Frozen.” I was lucky enough to get the role very quickly and got shipped off to Europe.
Being a competitive skater, does acting come naturally? Dora – I was very shy at irst, but I learned from the coaches about the characterization. Katie – I de initely agree that being performers there is something that drew us to this job. We have some acting qualities naturally, but it is very different from competing; this job de initely has more focus on the character.
What should the South Florida audiences expect from this show? It has four stories intertwined with your favorites: Mickey and Minnie. Lots of amazing skating, lighting and the music everyone knows. The performers have lots of energy and we love when we feel excitement from the audience. It is very interactive, and we have a pre-show to warm up with the cast. Tickets are on sale now and begin at $16. They are available at the BB&T Center and American Airlines Arena box of ices and through Ticketmaster or online at DisneyOnIce.com

THE NEW CHALLENGES OF
By Peter Jackson DR. PATRICK KENNEY is widely-respected as an expert in Infectious Diseases whose practice at Midland Medical Center (1421 East Oakland Park Blvd., Oakland Park), specializes in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. Dr. Kenney completed his Infectious Disease fellowship at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine.
JACKSON: It’s hard to believe this is 2017 and people are still getting infected with HIV Dr. Kenney – with the infection rates in South Florida being among the highest in the nation. What are the latest biomedical advances? What’s next? DR. KENNEY: With nearly 40 years that have passed since the onset of the outbreak, I am sad to say that, yes, we are still seeing new cases of HIV. In this technologically advanced era, the virus remains as insidious as it was in the early 1980s, but we as a community have become much more aware of the modes and risks of transmission and now have very advanced treatments that suppress the virus. As for the latest biomedical advances, pharmaceutical companies both in the United
States and abroad are developing treatments that are much more tolerable with less pill burden and adverse effects, more preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) options, vaccine trials, and cure modalities. The trouble with HIV is that it invades the nucleus of the cell, an area that holds the DNA and thus our genetic code. Scientists now know where the virus is hiding and are working on ways to “unlock” the virus from our DNA, which in turn would create a functional cure leading to eradication of the virus. JACKSON: You have been on the medical battle lines of HIV for many years. What has that experience been like – seeing a disease that was once a death sentence become one that’s about as manageable as diabetes?
DR KENNEY: Growing up as a child in the 1980s in a small town in Rhode Island, HIV was something that was completely foreign and that we had nothing to fear. It was considered something that happened in the cities like New York or Boston. But it did not take long before family friends were becoming ill and dying from these complications that no one had heard of and physicians at the time only read about in their medical studies. In 1996, the scientific community made a strong
Hotspots.LGBT | 49
triumph with the development of the first “cocktail” therapy against HIV with the novel class of drugs called the protease inhibitors. HIV death rates have dropped since then and now most HIV infected patients are on single tablet regimens which contain three sometimes four medications. Now as a physician, I am happy to report that many of my HIV patients do very well on treatment and now can expect to have the same life expectancy as their HIV-negative counterparts. I do, however, recommend that HIV infected patients do seek care from providers with experience with the current therapies, as many of the agents can interact with other common treatments for problems such high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and diabetes (a condition that is Yes, I think a great deal more difficult to manage all sexuallythan HIV I might active MSM add).
“
(men who have sex with men) at risk should be on PrEP...
“
JACKSON: The discovery a few years ago of the science to control viral loads and make HIV-positive individuals “undetectable” made the disease manageable. Now, biomedical advances have given us pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) which, when taken as prescribed by HIV-negative individuals, is close to 100% effective in eliminating the transmission of HIV by a partner. What, from a medical perspective, has been the impact of PrEP? Do you recommend that every MSM with more than one sexual partner have a prescription for PrEP?
DR. KENNEY: PrEP has been a game changer on both sides of the fence. For the HIV negative person, a new layer of protection has been added in conjunction with condoms to provide a nearly 100% barrier from infection. For HIV positive folks, the fear of transmitting the virus to a negative partner has diminished allowing for continuance of sexual expression and intimacy. Of course there are those individ-
50 | Hotspots.LGBT
uals who blame PrEP for the elevated incidence in other sexually transmitted infections as fewer and fewer people are using barrier protection methods such as condoms. My response to that would be, in my experience, patients who are on PrEP are monitored much more closely than those who are not. PrEP requires patients to get quarterly STI screenings as well kidney and liver function tests to ensure the medication does not cause any adverse effects. This close monitoring allows patients to catch STIs such gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis at early stages. Since all of these infections are reported to county health departments, we have more numbers to report and hence the increase. So, yes, I think all sexually-active MSM at risk should be on PrEP. That being said, I do ask my patients to continue using condoms if the are sexually active with multiple partners as we are seeing a rise in antibioticresistant strains of infections such as gonorrhea. This resistance is very real and does pose a threat to our community as time goes on. Please go out and get tested regularly to ensure that you are tested first, treated secondly. JACKSON: More than half of individuals living with HIV in the United States are now aged 50 or older. What are we learning about aging with HIV?
DR. KENNEY: We are very fortunate that HIV-infected individuals have the capacity to live a healthy life. But like any chronic illness, HIV can affect several body systems, especially the cardiovascular system. Also, our aging community was faced with having to take some of the earlier HIV medications which did have severe side effects including anemia, lipodystrophy (fat redistribution), and atherosclerotic disease. However, studies have shown that, with viral suppression from the HIV medications, we are able to decrease the amount of inflammation the virus causes on the vascular system. We still have a great deal to learn from our aging patients, but we are so happy that the majority of them are doing well despite the grim prognosis they may have been faced with 30 years ago.

A perspective on PrEP, Truvada and government health plans
52 | Hotspots.LGBT
“
Mass PrEP administration is a dangerous experiment...
“
A
t first it was heralded as a medical miracle — the news that a daily single dose of the drug Truvada protected sexually active people from contracting the HIV virus. The news became headlines around the world in July 2012, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Truvada as a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for those who actively pursued condomless sex. Not only aimed at gays, the FDA tossed its net wide and included “heterosexual men or women who do not regularly use condoms during sex with partners of unknown HIV status;” all those who had “injection of illicit drugs with sharing of equipment;” as well as “discordant heterosexual and homosexual partners where one partner is HIV-positive and the other HIV-negative.” Leave no stone unturned. That only made common sense, of course, since everyone seemed to know that both straights and gays have unprotected sex at one time or another in their lives. It just seemed that the word on the street suggested that gays had it far more often than the rest of mankind in general — which is why HIV was much more likely to infect gay men, at least in the United States. Unfortunately, what was true in 2012 is still true to

this day. There are currently 1.2 million people living with HIV in the U.S. (and one in nine don’t even know they have the disease). Even so, there is genuine progress being made in the fight against the disease. From 2005 to 2014, HIV diagnoses have declined 19 percent. No small victory. The good news ends, however, with today’s youth. Black gay and bisexual men between the ages of 13 and 24 had seen an increase in HIV infection by 87 percent in the past several years. Clearly the word is not reaching this group — or youth in general for that matter. Regardless of race, of all age groups, those between 20-29 have the largest increase in infection rate in this country. Of that group, less than 2 percent have been taking Truvada as PrEP. In fact, even as the drug has gained in popularity as a pre-exposure prophylaxis, current data from its manufacturer Gilead Sciences suggests just 49,000 prescriptions of the blue pill have been filled across the country. Cost is one reason. In the United States, the average price of Truvada is $1,564 per month. And while Gilead Sciences does have programs in place to make the drug available for low income patients, the shear cost of the drug is prohibitive

to most working class adults. Insurance rarely helps to cover PrEP, since using Truvada as a prophylaxis is not treating a medical condition. (Note: When used to treat an existing HIV infection, Truvada must be prescribed in combination with another HIV drug, bringing the combined cost to well over $3,000 per month.) But cost isn’t the only reason that Truvada and PrEP have hit some stumbling blocks. There is also the on-going protest over PrEP’s use by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and its president Michael Weinstein. Weinstein is concerned that those on PrEP will not take Truvada consistently, thereby giving a false sense of protection. Additionally, Weinstein feels that PrEP advocates, including the Center for Disease Control, are not being completely honest to sexually active adults by suggesting that PrEP is an effective tool for the masses. Weinstein feels that only the wholesale use of condoms will accomplish that. “If you have multiple partners or your partner has multiple partners, the most effective protection for yourself, your partners, and our community is a condom,” Weinstein states. “Mass PrEP administration is a dangerous experiment that is not supported by medical science and is currently resisted by doctors and patients alike.” And then there are the name callers. Oh yes. Take PrEP and proclaim it loudly or often enough, and you are likely to be labeled an “HIV slut” or a “Truvada whore.” In case you’ve missed the theory here, the common thought is that if you have access to the big blue pill, you will be more prone to throw caution to the wind and behave even more dangerously during sex. Exactly what you might do is limited only by your imagination, but certainly other drugs are among your options here, including but not limited to Tina (otherwise known as crystal methamphetamine, krank, tweak, or ice). But mere name calling is a minor point when compared with HIV, the disease, is concerned. While the virus doesn’t appear much in the news these days, it may be making a sudden and ugly resurgence. The source has nothing to do with PrEP or other pharmaceutical advances and everything to do with the American Health Care Act as currently being proposed by the Republican led Congress and President Donald Trump. AIDS United, the largest and longest running national coalition of community-based HIV/AIDS organizations, has just announced its opposition to the suggested replacement for the Affordable Care Act.
54 | Hotspots.LGBT
“This is the biggest attack to the health care system as we know it and the stakes are critical,” AIDS United vice president of policy and advocacy Ronald Johnson said. “Millions of people gained access to [health] care through the Affordable Care Act—many for the first time. And these gains are at risk. This isn’t an improvement to the Affordable Care Act. This is a hack job that puts tax cuts for wealthy people above the health needs of people. “The serious changes contemplated by this Act will directly undermine the goals of providing treatment and care for people living with HIV as well as the goal of ending the epidemic. AIDS United strongly opposes this Act. We encourage our partners and advocates to contact the House Ways and Means Committee and House Energy and Commerce Committee to oppose this bill.” PrEP, Truvada, and government health plans. SOUTH FLORIDA HIV RESOURCES IS THERE A LINK BETWEEN HIV AND OTHER SEXUALLY-TRANSMITTED DISEASES? 4People with other more common sexually-
transmitted diseases (STDs),such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes or syphilis, are at greater risk of becoming infected with HIV if they have unprotected sex with someone who is positive. In addition, if someone with HIV is infected with another STD, he or she is more likely to transmit the virus through sexual contact. Having another STD also can negatively affect the health of an HIV positive person. There are an estimated 19 million new STD cases occurring in the U.S. each year. As many as one in two sexually-active Americans will contract an STD by the age of 25. The only way to know if you have any STD, including HIV, is to ask to be tested. All STDs, including HIV, are treatable, and many other STDs are curable. Getting treated for an STD can help prevent more serious health effects and reduce the risk of contracting HIV if exposed.
HOW CAN I REDUCE MY RISK OF CONTRACTING HIV?
Condoms are a highly effective, readily available and inexpensive option for reducing the risk of contracting HIV through vaginal, anal and oral sex. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), male latex condoms when used consistently and correctly are highly effective in preventing the sexual transmission of HIV and many other STDs. In addition, it is also now known that an HIV positive person who is ongoing antiretroviral treatment and regular care can significantly reduce –by as much as 96%–the chances of passing the virus on to others. The Food and Drug Administration also recently approved the first daily antiretroviral agent for preexposure prophylaxis, often referred to as PrEP, for use by those who are negative to reduce the risk of contracting HIV. According to the CDC, PrEP is intended to be used in combination with, not to replace, other prevention methods such as condoms. Strict adherence to the daily regimen and regular HIV testing are critical. HIV can also be spread by sharing needles. To find a drug treatment program near you using the aids.gov locator. If you are using injection drugs and believe you cannot stop, reduce your risk of infection by never sharing needles, syringes or other drug preparation equipment. You can get clean needles from pharmacies or needle-exchange programs. Only use syringes that come from a reliable source.

1
Q: THIS IS YOUR SECOND YEAR AS THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF MIAMI BEACH GAY PRIDE. IS IT BETTER THE “SECOND TIME AROUND?” A: Absolutely! Even though I have spent many years involved with MBGP, once I had the irst year under my belt, I have learned what to expect. The execution, with the help of an amazing team, has been so rewarding this year.
2
Q: TELL OUR READERS ABOUT SOME OF
THE SPECIAL THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN PLANNED FOR THIS YEAR’S PRIDE? A: First and foremost we have four marshals for the festival this year. We will honor them at our VIP reception at W South Beach on Friday, April 7. We are proud to honor comedian and TV personality Ross Mathews as our Celebrity Marshal, Uncle Johnny from Elvis Duran Morning Show as our Advocate Marshal, and Miami Beach’s own Seth and Liebe Gadinsky as our Ally Grand Marshals.
3
Q: HOW ARE ORGANIZERS ABLE TO
ENSURE THAT MIAMI BEACH GAY PRIDE REMAINS A FREE EVENT? A: With the wonderful support of our sponsors, the City of Miami Beach, the Mayor, commissioners and volunteers and so many others, we are able to provide a free and safe event for everyone. We spend the entire year raising funds and working full time to make
sure we can pull off such a feat. Around the country, other Pride Festivals rely on ticket fees, but we have been so lucky that with our great organization we have been able to keep the event free.
4
Q: WHAT CAN RESIDENTS AND
VISITORS EXPECT AS FAR AS ENTERTAINMENT THIS YEAR? A: Our presenting sponsor, Celebrity Cruises, has been working hard on special main stage performances for Saturday and Sunday. We have expanded our TD Bank North Latin Stage this year. We have 90’s divas Kym Sims and Janice Robinson, as well as Peppermint from the upcoming season nine of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Our headliner for Sunday night is platinum selling singer/ songwriter Bebe Rexha. She will take over the main stage at 9 p.m. before the ireworks and a special tribute Prince.

DJ SUSHIMAN When did you realize you wanted to be a DJ? I have dabbled with music since I was a little boy. My mom would have birthday parties and I was the one who always played the music. I love how good music can make people dance and have fun. When I moved to the US I always wanted to be a DJ, but never had the courage. Then one day I met TP Lords, who became my best friend. I started downloading music for her performances. She saw how much I loved the music and said to me, “Why don't you become a DJ. 72 | Hotspots.LGBT
[exclusive interview] by Scott Holland
Where are you from? What brought you to South Florida? 'Im originally from Thailand, the land of smiles. I came to South Florida, because my mom told me to. Since my dad was American I have US citizenship and there were many more opportunities here for me. My mom was right!
What was your first residency and how did that feel? My first residency was at Twist. I remember feeling disbelief that I was spinning at the iconic Twist, a place I went to when I was just 21 years old. Now I feel like they are my family as
everyone is so nice to me. I would like to thank Joel Stedman who believed in me and hired me just based on my best friend's recommendation. I have been at Twist for five years now, and you can hear me spinning every Wednesday and some other days as well.
What separates you from other DJs? I'm an old school DJ. As I don't use my laptop or the synch button. I play and mix with any type of CDJ. I am an open format DJ and can play Commercial Pop, Vocal top 40, Circuit music, but my favorite type of music to play is Circuit Tribal, as I love the high energy with all the drums. I play whatever it takes to make people stay on the dance floor and have fun. I don't play music for myself, I play it for my audience to have fun and dance. When I feel the energy from the dance floor I play even better. What are some memorable moments from the DJ booth? I have spun at so many events it's hard for me to remember, but my first block party for Miami Beach Gay Pride 2013 was the start for me to play outdoor events with more than 10,000 people. Now I love to spin for block parties and have done many in Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
Other than DJing, what do you like to do for fun? I love to cook. My friends love when I cook for them, especially if I am making fried rice and soul food. I know I am Asian, but I love to cook everything. I also love shopping, the outdoors, adventure and travel. I am not a homebody, and I don't like to stay in the house too long. Describe yourself in three words? Sickening beats down! What does the future hold for DJ Sushiman? I really want to become an international DJ so people will know my sound all around the world. I also want to start remixing music. For more about DJ Sushiman follow him on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter) /DJSushiman. If you want to hear his

HOLLYWOOD | INSIDE & OUT
I thought awards season was over. And yet, there are still a couple ceremonies to talk about - like the iHeartRadio Awards. I can hear you rolling your eyes, but suspend your disbelief until I share this almost touching story. When Justin Timberlake received an award for "Can't Stop the Feeling", he said: "If you are black or you are brown or you are gay or you are a lesbian or you are trans or maybe you're just a sissy singing boy from Tennessee. Anyone who has treated you unkindly, it's only because they are afraid or they have been taught to be afraid of

how important you are. Because being different means you make a difference. So, f%ck 'em.” I'm not sure about all that Kumbaya crap, but I have no problem getting behind Justin - especially when he's saying "F&ck 'em!” I ask your indulgence in this next story because, to be honest, I have no idea what I'm talking about. I had abandoned "American Idol" long before it limped to its final days on the tube. But I vaguely remember La'Porsha. What can I say? I have a penchant for big black women with apostrophes in their names. I went back in the
archives of BillyMasters.com, and read some quotes she made when the so-called "bathroom bill" passed in her native Mississippi. On the topic of homosexuality, she said, "I am one of the people who doesn't really agree with that lifestyle. I wasn't brought up that way; it wasn't how I was raised. But I do have a lot of friends and a lot of people that I love dearly who are gay and homosexual and they're such sweet, nice people." So I find it all the more mind-boggling that now, a scant year later, she's made what I find a startling statement: "I chose to

Something which is definitely a choice is whether or not to be a wh@re. I don't say that in a disparaging way. After all, everybody loves a wh@re. If they didn't, it would be hard to earn the title. This story is an update on the wh@re of 2016 (and several previous decades), Logo's "Prince Charming", Robert Sepulveda. Brace yourself - he's single. I know - who couldn't see that coming? "Eric is a super, super sweet guy, but we're not together and I'm completely, completely single." Sounds like an escort ad to me. But, wait - he's not done. "I have lots of production companies that are interested in doing shows with me, so I'm going to focus on that and my pocketbook." What a shocking shift in priorities - holding out for cash. But, riddle me this - who are these numerous production companies looking to hire an aging gay hooker? 'Cause I'm willing to put out...for a price.
50. And he celebrated the event in several ways. First, he chopped off all his hair and revealed his natural silver coloring - which I must say suits him. Then he launched a T-shirt campaign to support transgender rights and posted a photo wearing the shirt (taken pre-coif). "Most of us have the luxury of being who we are and living our truth.

be heterosexual after being homosexual for two years." Huh? Turns out, this revelation is in support of another one of her beliefs. "You're wrong to think it's not a choice for some...because it was for me." She has also said, "I chose a belief system that felt TRUE to my spirit." She calls it a choice. Others might call it denial.
We must stand in solidarity with those who are not as lucky. Grab one of these tshirts and wear it with pride. Let's show our support for our transgender family." Proceeds from the campaign will go to the Trans Youth Equality Foundation. As Johnny suggests, you can grab one at Represent.com/barrowman.
As noble and fulfilling as that endeavor is, what he'll likely remember from turning 50 is the sight of his "Arrow" co-star, Stephen Amell, bringing out his birthday cake wearing only a pair of snug camouflage undies! Since John has frequently expressed his fondness for Amell's physique, this was certainly the gift that kept on giving. You can see Barrowman blowing out his candles on BillyMasters.com.
Someone noticeably absent from Barrowman's birthday bash was Colton Haynes. But he had a good reason - he got engaged. Engaged? Didn't he just meet this guy? Actually, he just went public about his beau - they've been together for weeks...er, months. Colton's florist/boyfriend got Cher to make a video singing their favorite song, "I've Got You Babe", and then he popped the question complete with fireworks. What could possibly go wrong?
When "straight as an arrow" takes on new meaning, it's definitely time to end yet another column. You know what I got out of this column? That Eric from "Finding Prince Charming" is available. So, while I schedule a blow-out, you can check out www.BillyMasters.com - the site that only takes a little off the top. If you have a question, send it along to Billy@BillyMasters.com and I promise to get back to you before Eric asks if I brought my own shampoo bottle. So, until next time, remember, one man's filth is another man's bible. Hotspots.LGBT | 95

o you have difficulty cramming the time to exercise into an already hectic schedule? Is your weight loss program stalled due to bad eating habits? Do you get out of bed anxious and cranky? These are all serious problems. Sad to say, there are no easy solutions or magic fixes. Yet many have found that an early morning exercise regime has its advantages as far as increasing energy, speeding up weight loss and even elevating moods. Here's how working out in the AM can make you sparkle. First, exercising in the morning frees up your day. Getting your workout in before work means

that you'll be up for impromptu dinner plans, a movie with friends, or maybe even a hot date. Who knows what the day holds when you start it off right? Plus, your time in the gym is time just for you, before you give it all away to your job, coworkers, or friends. Secondly, when you exercise, the effort helps to deliver fresh oxygen and nutrients to muscles, organs and other tissues. And that means your whole cardiovascular system and all of your muscles will work more efficiently all day long. You'll experience more energy and a spike in your metabolism that will help you burn more fat and calories even on days when you're stuck behind a computer or conference table. Thirdly, early morning exercise jump starts your brain better than the strongest caffeine fix. Exercise has both short-term and long-term brain benefits. Studies show that the short-term benefits include better executive function and memory recall. In addition, exercise can alleviate morning anxiety and depression by increasing the production of endorphins, the body's natural pain killing and feel good hormones. There are even instances of people getting off antidepressants and anxiety meds because they've found their high in exercise! Finally, research shows that working out in the morning coupled with a healthy breakfast is the only way to start the day. Exercise helps to rev up your metabolism so that you'll have better endurance as you face challenges and stress. A breakfast comprised of a 3-2-1 ratio of low glycemic index carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats helps you to have a steady supply of energy throughout the day. You'll also store less fat and be less likely to give into those pesky cravings for sugary treats and quick-fix fast foods. Clearly, there are advantages to working out in the AM, but for many people this is just not an option. If this is true for you, take heart; your body will respond to exercise any time of the day as long as you can stick with a steady and consistent exercise program which includes cardio, weights, and sound nutritional principles. Air Supply
brings the 80's to South Florida
“Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” for 40 years
By Ian Maloney Some of the best things in life came out of the 70s. After all, that's the decade I was born in. It was also the 1970s that gave birth to the hit rock band Air Supply, which formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1975 when singer Russell Hitchcock met guitar player and songwriter Graham Russell when they were both cast in an Aussie version of “Jesus Christ Superstar” that was being staged in Melbourne. The band, whose chart topping hits “Making Love out of Nothing at all,” “Two Less Lonely People in the World,” “All out of Love” and many others will be stopping in South Florida for three shows the weekend of March 23-25. The duo, along with their band, will take the stage on Thursday, March 23 and Friday, March 24 at 8 p.m. at Stage 954 at The Casino at Dania Beach. Then, they will close out the weekend on Saturday, March 25 at 8 p.m. at Magic City Casino at the Magic City Amphitheater. It was a pleasure to chat with Russell Hitchcock for this exclusive Hotspots interview.
106 | Hotspots.LGBT
You've been playing with Air Supply since forming the band back in 1975. Do you still get nervous when you go on stage? I do. No one else does, but I get nervous for the first 15-20 minutes. I just like to make sure my voice is the way I want it to be and get a gauge on the audience and then I'm good to go, but yes, I do still get stage fright. Are you one of those singers who is quiet all day long, saving your voice? Or is it just ready to go when you have to sing. No, when I'm on the road, I tend to keep to myself and spend as much time not speaking as possible. I read an article many years ago that I think was Barbra Streisand and she said something like, “I go to sing and if it works, it works and if it doesn't, it doesn't.” I am kind of in the same boat. I take much better care of myself than I did in years gone by, but there is no special thing for me. I just try to eat as healthy as I can and get as much rest as I can and spend as much quiet time as I can before the show. Who do you love in today's hit music scene? You know, I'm a dinosaur, I don't listen to too much modern stuff, but I think Adele is my favorite. Before her, I would go back to Cold Play. When I listen to music, which is very rare these days, I listen to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Queen, The Eagles, The Bee Gees. That's what I listen to. What can fans expect to see when you come to South Florida? Obviously, we will be playing the songs that people expect to hear and cherish. Graham does a great solo during the show and we have two new songs that I don't think audiences in Florida have heard before. We have dragged a song out that we haven't played in years and years, so we expect a great response when our Florida fans see it. We have a great band. It's a very energetic show, high energy. It's very loud, it's a rock and roll show. I keep getting this “soft rock” moniker, which I can't stand. It's a great show, I'm as pleased as I've ever been with the show.
uThe show is open to all ages. Tickets range from $35-$90 per person. VIP tables are available for $500 and include seating for four. Tickets can be purchased online at www.casinodaniabeach.com, www.magicitycasino.com or by calling 844234-SHOW.

amo! ¿Has visto la película 50 First Dates?
¿Te lo he dicho? ¿Cómo diablos has estado? ¡Hace tanto tiempo! "Cuando no me mantengo en contacto con alguien durante mucho tiempo, digo cosas como" Encantado de conocerte, soy Jerry. Y tu nombre es ..? "Estoy agradecido de conocer a personas que no les importa repetir lo mismo cada vez, así que no me siento mal por ello, pero estoy tratando de mejorar. Uh ... ¿De qué estaba hablando? ¡No te encanta Batman!

A Life to Remember Today I decided to get something off my chest… It's this damn 5 pound necklace with the words Lady Gaga on it! Excuse me while I put it down… There! That's better. I don't even like Gaga to begin with so I don't know why I bought it. I mean, maybe she has a couple of songs I like… Ok, maybe I liked one or two of her albums too…which I play every day when I take a shower…or listen in the car…or when I'm cooking something…or just always… I freaking love her! Necklace is going back on! But there is something else I'd like to get off my chest if you allow me to get personal with you. Two years ago I suffered a terrible car crash and this caused me to lose my memories. I live with amnesia now and it's horrible because it's not
possible for me to remember my whole life before the accident or retaining new information nowadays. Have you seen 50 First Dates? It's pretty much the same thing, but it takes me more than 24 hours to forget things. Also Adam Sandler is not after my a$$. I retain only those things I write down on paper. My life today exists just as long as I write it down and go through my notes every month so I don't forget. What was I talking about just now?... Oh yes! Don't you love fish? My friends call me Dory because of that film Finding Dory. They say I repeat myself a lot and some people had to re-introduce themselves to me several times over a 3-month period because of this amnesia problem that I have. Have I told you about that? Many people tend to reunite with someone they have not seen in a while and say things like “Man! How the hell have you been?! It's been so long!” When I don't stay in touch with someone for a long time, I say things like “Nice to meet you, I'm Jerry. And your name is..?” I am grateful to know people who don't mind playing along so I don't feel bad about it, but I am trying to get better. Uh… What was I talking about?... Don't you love Batman! He's my ultimate favorite hero! Only I didn't know who he was because I completely forgot about all the comics, clothing items and memorabilia I collected about him over the years because of my amnesia. Did I tell you I have amnesia? It happened 2 years ago due to a car crash. Anyway, once I realized I had a Facebook account, I looked it over and saw many “get well” messages posted by people who knew about my car accident and many of them had a picture of Batman on those. When I looked inside my closet, none of the clothes were familiar to me and noticed I owned 32
Batman shirts! I was also told I loved working out so I asked my sister: “Ok, please be honest. I can handle the truth. Am I this Batman dude? Because, if I am, I'm short a butler and a lot of freaking money right now!” I now own over 68 Batman-themed articles of clothing and, every time I wear them, I take a picture with them to post on my Facebook with captions like “Batman is going to the gym” or “Batman is about to go dancing” because, even though I cannot remember my friends and family members, I know they are watching and I want them to know that “Batman” is still here even if I am a different person today. One of my biggest regrets about losing my memories is not having the ability to learn life's lessons and become a much better and wiser person because of that. Treasure your memories whether they're good or bad. They shape you…make you who you are today and what is to become of you tomorrow. Yeah, it may be cool to forget about all those horrible exes you had, but you also forget about your childhood. Having amnesia is not that much of a blessing as others have told me. Yeah, it's great to get away with late rent payment because you just forgot, but you get to also forget about your prom night or college years. I don't really know anyone like me unless they are older and suffering from Alzheimer's, but if you do know someone, feel free to contact us and tell me all about it. I'd love to get in touch with these people! What the hell was I talking about?... Right, March is my birthday month so I'm expecting lots of presents from you all! Make them very shiny! Or maybe a movie, or something having to do with Batman. I think I like those, but I'm not sure. Hey, I might have lost a big part of the last 35 years of my life, but I've got 35 more to go and I will make sure they are fantastic. I am certain you're going to have a fantastic month as well! I love you all and, please, remember to be good to one another.

NEED WOOD
By Woody Miller
SCRATCH AND
I
SNIFF
love how guys smell, from fresh sweat (not the same as “BO” for the ignoranti), to crotch, d!ck and butt (not the same as caca for philistines!). The right smell is 10 times more effective than Viagra. I’ve picked up great looking guys online but if they show up, like they usually do, smelling of soap and baby powder, sorry, but my stick goes south. Before meeting, I’ve tried to tell them indirectly that I don’t like soap smells, but usually they run away as if I’m going to show up smelling like I smeared a Camembert in my crotch. Am I deviant and abnormal? Will ex-gay therapy cure me of this? It seems that everybody has been brainwashed by a 50’s housewife mentality –everything in its place looking pretty. How can I tell guys what I like without having them run away? --- Sniff, Sniff
y Dear Sniff-Sniff: You’re scaring people off because you haven’t struck the right tone. Too direct (“I love nicotinestained underwear!”) and they’re going to hit the delete button like a woodpecker. But too indirect and they’ll do the same thing. Why? Because the absence of information forces people to make negative assumptions. So, be straightforward but diplomatic. Say something like, “You know how men get turned on by what they see? I get turned on by what I smell. So, my perfect sexual experience
would be for you to show up showered without scented soap, cologne or deodorant. Or unshowered, but without smelling like an anchovy’s c*nt.” Ok, maybe I’d leave out that last bit, but you get my point. Ask and you shall receive.
Hey, woody! Thank you, thank you, thank you for the great column on bad breath. But, you never addressed how to tell somebody they smell like they just rimmed a dozen dirty bungholes after smoking a pack of cigarettes. I’ve left mouthwash, floss and a toothbrush out for them but they’re clueless. And the few times I’ve been direct they get offended. Help! -- Olfactory Assaulted Dear Olfactory, There’s just no easy way to tell people their breath makes your eyes water. It’s not like you’re telling them they’ve got broccoli in their teeth, a booger in their nose, or a bat in their cave. I mean, they can look in a mirror and see that. But you can’t smell your own breath (the body gets used to its own odors) so being indirect won’t work. Neither will being direct if they think you’re being passive-aggressive or just plain insulting. Try “sharing” the problem. Don’t say, “You’ve got bad breath so gargle, b!tch!” Say, “I think we both could use a little mouthwash. Come to the bathroom with me and let’s use it together.”
