What is TRUVADA for PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis)?
TRUVADA is a prescription medicine that can be used for PrEP to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 infection when used together with safer sex practices. This use is only for adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This includes HIV-negative men who have sex with men and who are at high risk of getting infected with HIV-1 through sex, and male-female sex partners when one partner has HIV-1 infection and the other does not. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV-1. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
I What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP? Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: u You must be HIV-negative. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1 infection. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. u Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting TRUVADA for PrEP or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: u You must continue using safer sex practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. u You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. u To further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: • Know your HIV-1 status and the HIV-1 status of your partners. • Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months or when your healthcare provider tells you. • Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV-1 to infect you.
• Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior. • Have fewer sex partners. • Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. • If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. u If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. TRUVADA can cause serious side effects: u Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, nausea, vomiting, stomach-area pain, cold or blue hands and feet, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and/or fast or abnormal heartbeats. u Serious liver problems. Your liver may become large and tender, and you may develop fat in your liver. Symptoms of liver problems include your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, and/or stomach-area pain. u You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or serious liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking TRUVADA for a long time. In some cases, these serious conditions have led to death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of these conditions. u Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you also have HBV and take TRUVADA, your hepatitis may become worse if you stop taking TRUVADA. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider. If your healthcare provider tells you to stop taking TRUVADA, they will need to watch you closely for several months to monitor your health. TRUVADA is not approved for the treatment of HBV. I Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP? Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you also take lamivudine (Epivir-HBV) or adefovir (HEPSERA).

The best chatter on Facebook this week “So I was in Publix using the public restroom and just as I sat down and began to do my business, a voice from the next stall said, “Hi! How are you?” Embarrassed, I said, “I’m good!” The voice said, “So what are you up to?” I said, “Just doing the same as you, I guess!” Then I hear, “Can I come over?” Annoyed, I said, “Yooooo, what the heck, bro…” Then the voice said, “Listen, I’ll have to call you back. There’s an idiot in the next stall answering all my questions!”

Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man Hit off-Broadway show comes to South Florida
N
aughty and educational, the offBroadway hit comedy “Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man” will be presented in the Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts through Sunday, April 9. Based on the international best-selling book of the same title, the interactive comedy takes the audience on a hilarious and wild ride where no topic is taboo and the insider “tips” come from the perfect source: a gay man. The comedy is set at a local university auditorium where the English department holds its monthly meet-the-author event and where this month's featured author is Dan Anderson of “Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man.” With the help of a hunky stage assistant named Stefan, Dan aims to turn the event upside down with a highly theatrical, audience interactive, sex tip seminar. Theatermania.com raved of the longrunning off-Broadway show, “"An uproariously funny series of interactive demonstrations, Sex Tips is one of the best shows you'll see this year!” It was a pleasure to sit down with Jacklyn Collier (who plays Robyn) and Sean

Were you a ham as a kid? J – I started acting when I was six, after going into a local talent show. I sang Elvis, Patsy Kline and some Shakespeare.
S- I told my mom when I was a kid I wanted to be an actor. She was not a stage mom, and said you need to igure this out. At the age of six I called a manager, and the rest is history. At what age did you start acting professionally? J - I started acting professionally the summer before college. S- I started working professionally at 14.
How did you get cast in “Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man”? J- I got the audition through my agent. I had wanted to see the show for quite a while; it had been on my bucket list. When I got cast, I felt amazing. S- I got cast because of Jacklyn as we have
Has your sex life gotten better since starring in the show? S- Yes, I am a curious person naturally, so when someone gives me a tip I need to try it out. I am willing to do anything twice. I have de initely found new ways to enjoy my sexual experiences. J – I think Sean and I have very satis ied partners. The actual tips I have tried have been well received.
Jacklyn Collier been friends for nine years. She got me the audition and I got the part.
What has been your favorite part, other than this one, and why? J – I wrote and produced a web series with my writing partner called “This is My Roommate.” It was my favorite part to play because we created the characters and acted in it. I was able to cast friends, I produced and directed it. S- I did a contract for “Life in the Dream House,” a TV show form Mattel, and I did the voice of Ken for ive years. It was a dream role! What should the Central Florida audiences expect from “Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man”? S - You are going to walk away with actual knowledge as it's based on a real book. Kid bedrooms Mud rooms or entranceways Dining room Garage or sheds For the kids bedrooms, see the tips below on how to 'get everyone involved'. The mud room and garage are places where everyone tends to drop things on their way to another part of the house. So go back to the plan in Step 1 and figure out where everything is going to go. If everything has a place and everyone knows what those homes are, in time, fewer things will get dropped in the middle of the room. You can add storage items to your mudroom or entranceway to make even the smallest space more efficient: Baskets for mittens and hats, racks for shoes and boots, hooks for bags. The garage or shed would benefit from the same treatment: hooks for shovels and rakes, metal storage racks with buckets for odds and ends.

the basement of things that you never unpacked, from two moves ago! There are four areas of the house that are typical clutter zones:
If your kids are little, print a picture of whatever needs to go in which box, shelf or basket and tape it to the front of the receptacle, so they learn where everything goes. Cooperation is best achieved with a little incentive: the good stuff like video games or tablet time need to be dependent on having a tidy room and the prompt removal of toys from the common areas at the end of a day of playing‌

Step 1
Step 3: Get everyone involved Speaking of learning, there are kids out there (somewhere) who are superefficient and keep their toys properly organized in color coded boxes, neatly stacked in the playroom. Okay‌ now back to reality. No kids do that, but they can learn to. They can learn that every toy, book and article of clothing has a home and that home is not the living room sofa.

Step 5: Inside and out Don't forget to look beyond the walls of the house to the garden areas. Stand on the sidewalk or in front of your house and look at it: does it look like you could put it on the market to sell it? No? Time to add to the list from Step 1. Whether it's a coat of fresh paint or a spray wash, fixing shutters or hanging baskets, trimming the bushes or raking

Step 4: Big items get done first The sense of achievement you'll feel if you get a few of the big things out of the way make the rest of the smaller tasks easier. Like what? Flipping and cleaning the mattresses (Tip: Throw some baking soda on your mattress and leave it for a few hours before vacuuming it off. It will neutralize any odors. You can also drag it outside for some sunlight, which has the same effect, but it's not always a practical option!) Steam cleaning the carpets (Need an easy fix for dents made by heavy furniture in the carpet fibers? Put an ice cube in each dent and let it melt. When it has melted and the area is dampened, take a cloth and blot the excess water and iron the area, again with a towel over top. Once the area is dry, you'll be able to fluff up your carpet fibers so they look as good as new!) Emptying and cleaning out the refrigerator or freezer Once some of these bigger chores are done, reorganizing the junk drawer in the kitchen won't seem daunting at all.

5. Get a bidet Travel through Europe or Asia and you will quickly realize that your American hiney has been robbed all these years. We need to embrace the bidet as a standard tool in our bathroom ritual, especially when it comes to number two. You may think that a bidet has to be a free standing gadget that looks like a funny shaped toilet, but that's not the case. Handheld units are also common, they attach right to the toilet and provide easy access to your backside. One of my favorites was built right into the toilet seat and had a control on the side of the commode. It was life changing and will de initely be a ixture when I build a house.

4. Run for the subway We aren't talking about the train in NYC or a sandwich shop, we mean subway tiles. Classic white rectangular subway tiles will never go out of style in your bathroom. Don't believe me, just turn on any one of those design shows on HGTV and you will see what we mean. Already got subway tiles in your bathroom? Don't even think of replacing them, unless they are busted and nasty. They add so much character to the space and give it a classic look.

Consider an old armoire or free standing cabinet for extra storage. Consider open storage options also like standing shelves and shelving for the tub/shower to help reduce clutter.

When did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession? The first show I saw was about 15yrs ago when I went to the most famous club that Puerto Rico had at the moment (Eros). I saw this drag queen on stage and I immediately knew that it would be my passion to do this form of art. The Drag Queens name was Auntie Nina Flowers. I was very lucky and honored to get the opportunity to start shows at Eros. After that I continued to work in this art until I decided to move to Miami. Once I moved is when I realized that this is more than doing a show and it would become a profession for me. Who is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother and why? It's funny because I am always asked who my drag mother is. When I first started doing this art I started with an extravagant character (Waka La Foo). The person who helped me in the beginning was my drag mother Kathy LaFontaine. During my steps in this art I inherited a couple of drag mothers (Aunties) Satine D' Cane, Nina Flowers, and Dixsha Norell. After a couple of years I decided to upgrade my character including a female impersonator which is when Kalah Mendoza was born. The person that helped me achieve this was my Drag Mother Edwin Irizarry and Drag Father Joshuan Aponte. I would say that my favorite queen was Erika Andrews (Old School) because she was very glamorous and that personified the drag I interpreted. For the new generation it would have to be Bianca Del Rio, because she is not only an entertainer, but also damn funny! What's your favorite number to perform and why? My favorite number would have to be a Latin song by Ana Gabriel "Huelo a Soledad," because it is a song with a lot of feelings and every time I do this song it reminds me of people that I love a lot that are no longer with us. What's the best thing that has happened to you in drag? with sexy The best thing that has happened to me in drag was Adult having the opportunity to be MissVideo NocheStar Latina 2015 and having the opportunity to represent myself in the Miss Florida F.I. 2015 pageant and come in 4th runner up and winning best production for talent. I am also so fortunate to continue winning pageants such as Miss Miami Beach Gay Pride 2016 which gave me the opportunity to meet amazing people and feel the love and affection from my LGBT community.

Tony-Award Winner Andrea Martin set to perform in Fort Lauderdale The Parker Playhouse welcomes the Broadway and TV legend on April 1 By Scott Holland

he “Broadway Concert Series” Hosted by Sirius XM Radio Star Seth Rudetsky whom the New York Times dubbed “The Mayor of Broadway,” is returning to Fort Lauderdale. This popular concert series produced by Mark Cortale, returns to The Broward Center for the Performing Arts' Parker Playhouse on April 1 with comedy legend Andrea Martin, star of TV's SCTV and two-time Tony Award winner for the Broadway revival of “Pippin” and “My Favorite Year.” The show starts at 8 p.m. What differentiates this concert series from any other, is the seamless mix of intimate behind-the-scenes stories from Broadway's biggest stars – prompted by the encyclopedic minded Rudetsky's probing, funny, revealing questions – and their stellar singing of musical theatre repertoire. Andrea Martin is the legendary comedy star of SCTV and the film “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” She won her second and most recent Tony Award in 2013 for her performance as Berthe in the Broadway revival of “Pippin” and

was nominated for another Tony Award last season for the 2016 production “Noises Off.” Her new series “Great News,” executive produced by Tina Fey, premieres April 25 on NBC, and Andrea can currently be seen on the Hulu hit series “Difficult People” created by Julie Klausner. Martin's big break came when she got cast in the original Toronto production of “Godspell,” in what is now considered the legendary cast of Victor Garber, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Gilda Radner, Jayne Eastwood and Paul Shaffer, their musical director. She went on to join the famous “SCTV” (Second City TV) troupe winning two Emmy awards for writing, winning her first Tony award for Featured Actress in a Musical for “My Favorite Year,” and also garnering Tony nominations for her roles in “Young Frankenstein,” “Oklahoma” and “Candide.” Her film credits include “Breaking Upwards,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” “All Over the Guy,” “Young Triffie's Been Made Away With,” “Stepping Out,” “Bogus,” “Wag the Dog,” “New York Minute,” “Black Christmas,” and “Cannibal Girls.” In addition to her legendary work on “SCTV,” her television credits include “My Big Fat Greek Life,” “Ed,” and “Nurse Jackie.” Seth Rudetsky, has hosted the “Broadway Series” at The Nourse Theatre in San Francisco for its three seasons, as well as in Provincetown for the six seasons since its inception, and nation-wide in many other major cities. He is the afternoon host on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio's “On Broadway” as well as the host of “Seth Speaks” on SiriusXM Stars. As a pianist, he has played piano for over a dozen Broadway shows including “Ragtime,” “Les Miserables.” and “Phantom of the Opera” among many others. As a comic, Rudetsky was awarded "Funniest Gay Male in NY" at Stand-Up NY and is a three-time Emmy nominee as a writer for “The Rosie O'Donnell Show.” His newest book, “The Rise and Fall of a Theater Geek” was published by Random House and is available on Amazon.com. He co-wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed new musical “Disaster!” this past season on Broadway. It was a pleasure to sit down with Andrea Martin for this Exclusive Hotspot interview. Were you always a comedienne/actor as a kid or when did it start? I wasn't always a comedienne. Shockingly I
don't think it started until I was 27 and joined SCTV in Toronto. Before that I was doing musicals and plays. At SCTV I was forced to hone my comedic abilities. What was your first professional/paid gig? When I was 13, I performed Liat in South Pacific at the Kennebunkport playhouse, and I think I got paid for that. Penny Fuller played the lead. I definitely got paid for being a chicken on Captain Kangaroo. When did you realize entertainment was going to be your career? I have to say by process of elimination from Children's Theater in Portland, Maine. I never considered anything else. I just thought I love this, and I continued doing it. I was lucky enough to work constantly. You have done TV, Broadway and Movies, what is your favorite and why? My favorite thing is theater. It's what I am most used to as I started at nine years old. It's a comfortable process for me and its great muscle memory. In TV and Film I have to be very conscious on how I am performing. I also love the schedule and comradery of doing theater and knowing I have the opportunity the next night to get something right. Do you have a favorite role or roles? I have two favorite roles. The first is Serafina Delle Rose in “The Rose Tattoo” and the other is Berthe in “Pippin.” Both challenged me in many ways and I love these women. Serafina Delle Rose proved to me that I could be a serious actress. And Berthe showed me and the audience that no matter what your age you can
still have vitality and enthusiasm for life. What is your fantasy role? I would like to be the wife in “Death of a Salesman.” I would also love a dramatic role in a TV Series. You have won two Emmy Awards and two Tony Awards, when are you winning your Oscar? I don't think it's an impossibility… I hope before I'm 90. Have you worked with Seth Before? I met him in 1991, when he was my musical director and we have been really good friends ever since. We have travelled throughout North America together, and it's always fun to be with him. What should the south Florida audiences expect from your performance with Seth in the Broadway Series? They should expect frivolity, laughter, an intimate evening, collaboration, an escape, and a whole lot of fun. This show is very informal and I love to talk with the audience. What's ahead for Andrea Martin? Currently, I am shooting “Difficult People” for Hulu, and on April 25, my series, “Great News” for NBC premieres at 9 p.m. I really hope everyone watches as I love this character and this show and I really want it to be picked up. In a couple months I will be shooting a film in Toronto called “Little Italy.” For tickets to this spontaneous evening of hilarity and show-stopping songs, please visit BrowardCenter.org or call 954-468-3280. Miles Gaston Villanueva
Al Pacino
By Billy Masters
I remember going for this one dude...who I basically roughed up quite a bit. He had make-up on him and everything. He came backstage. He was a good sport about it. A couple comes in afterwards and goes, 'Do you know who that was? That's our favorite gay p@rn star.' So this guy was putting on airs. He's clearly seen more than I ever have." - Darren Criss tells Conan O'Brien about making out with a gay p@rn star during a performance of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" on Broadway. Which begs the question - which one? I'm betting it's one of Michael Lucas' boys - or Lucas himself! If you're anything like me (and I believe at least some of you are), you can never have enough Tennessee Williams. Recently I dashed back to Boston to see "Night of the Iguana" with Elizabeth Ashley, Amanda Plummer and James Earl Jones. Last week, it was a play about Tennessee Williams at the Pasadena Playhouse starring Al Pacino, Garrett Clayton and Judith Light. This new play was billed as a "development production", but it sure seemed pretty polished, from the starladen cast to the swanky set to
94 | Hotspots.LGBT
the ticket prices. Mind you, I'm not complaining - the rare chance to see Al Pacino at work is worth every penny.
The play is a fascinating character study of the final years of Williams' life told through the eyes of one of his last beaus, playwright Dotson Rader. Onstage Rader was portrayed by Miles Gaston Villanueva, and if his name is not as familiar as his colleagues', he was no less talented (or, for that matter, hunky). Garrett Clayton has been on quite a roll. He starred in
"King Cobra" (based on gay porn pup Brent Corrigan), he was a lead in "Hairspray: Live", and now he's holding his own opposite Al Pacino. That he's holding his own clad in some skimpy undies only gilds the lily. I must note the breathtaking Andrew Dits, who makes the most of one brief scene. Judith Light, who never disappoints, tackles a character clearly based on the trustee of Williams' legacy, Lady Maria St. Just - who has been described as neither a lady, nor a saint, nor just! Light is one of those rare stage creatures
In one weekend, I saw more Busch than I did in my 30s! The divine Charles Busch was touring California with two very different cabaret shows and, as a completist, I had to see both. "The Lady at the Mike" is his loving tribute to leading ladies he both worked with and admired. The material runs the gamut - from Elaine Stritch to Joan Rivers, from Helen Morgan to Julie Wilson. Like all great artists, he makes the material his own without ever imitating. "That Girl/That Boy" begins with Dolores Gray's "Thanks A Lot, But No Thanks" and doesn't let up until Lucille Ball's "Hey Look Me Over". His "Surabaya Johnny" was one of the more persuasive I've heard - more Lemper than Lenya
On March 9, Oklahoma Senator Ralph Shortey was found in a motel room with an underaged male. Yawn - another married politician found sleeping with a boy. But this Republican was Trump's campaign chair in Oklahoma! The details may make the situation worse for him, but I find them quite Judith Light
It would all be for naught without a galvanizing presence at the center, and Pacino (or "Mr. P" as Light calls him) is certainly that. In a masterful performance that could easily become a caricature, he etches a painfully nuanced portrait of an artist in decline. He even captures Williams' almost musical vocal cadence. The play has some rough edges, but it's a tantalizing morsel of things to come. Should anyone want my notes, all they have to do is ask. For once, I refrained from spouting my unsolicited opinions backstage.
- and makes a real argument for a full Weill/Brecht show. The audiences ate him up at Costa Mesa's Segerstrom Center, and there was near-pandemonium at Rockwell Table & Stage in Los Angeles. Nothing turns me on more than talent, and Busch has that in abundance. Should you be so fortunate to get to see him, go!
Ralph Shortley
who stalks rather than walks, who intones rather than recites, who becomes rather than acts. She is never less than riveting.
amusing. Police responded to a "check welfare" call from someone who saw the senator and youth enter a Super 8 motel - oh, the humanity. When the cops knocked on the door, Shortey said he was alone and refused to let them in. Once they threatened to enter with a pass key, he opened the door and police found him with a 17-yearold boy, who claimed to have known the senator for a year. "I used to sell weed to him," the lad said.
Uncovered texts show the tyke asking Shortey if he could help him make some money for spring break. The senator said, "I don't really have any legitimate things I need help with right now. Would you be interested in 'sexual' stuff?" The boy's dad says that his son "has a history of soliciting himself on Craigslist for sexual conduct." So I guess he's into "sexual stuff". And yet Shortey wasn't arrested - at least not for a week. He was eventually charged with three felonies - engaging in child prostitution, transporting a minor for prostitution, and engaging in prostitution within 1,000 feet of a church! Call me old fashioned, but I think we can drop that last charge if it's a Catholic church! Upon his arrest, the State Senate passed a resolution stripping Shortey's name from all legislation and barring him from using his office or parking spot. No - not the parking spot!!!
When I can almost see Garrett Clayton's "busch", it's definitely time to end yet another column. Remind me to tell you all about meeting Pacino - it's quite a story. You can read loads of other stories on www.BillyMasters.com - the site which is into all kinds of "sexual stuff". Send your questions along to Billy@BillyMasters.com and I promise to get back to you before the GOP asks Super 8 for a corporate rate! Until next time, remember, one man's filth is another man's bible. Hotspots.LGBT | 95

id you ever wonder about that late afternoon chocolate craving that drives you to your hidden stash of Hershey's Kisses? Do you get a hankering for pizza after a monster session at the gym? Cravings for certain foods can indicate either a deficiency in the body or an emotional response that can be mistaken for hunger. Cravings of all kinds come from the central nervous system; they're a response to signals from the brain that something's missing.

2. Drink less booze. Drinking creates cravings for everything, especially junk!
3. Sleep more. A well rested mind and body are less likely to crave carbs. 4. Satisfy yourself now. Waiting too long can make your need seem more important than it really is, turning a 250calorie slip into a 2500 calorie binge. 5. Eat more protein; it's filling and it can help control your appetite.

FITNESS/HEALTH
Cravings can also originate from environmental and psychological stimuli.
Remember, you're not a victim. Here are suggestions to help bust those cravings and keep that hot body intact:
FITNESS/HEALTH
In the mood for a half a turkey and a mammoth wedge of cheese? Some experts link such cravings to low serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter that enhances mood and produces a calming effect, can be replenished by chemicals found in foods containing the amino acid tryptophan, found in turkey and cheeses.
Every time the holiday season arrives, you tell yourself that you'll face it with unmitigated control. Then it happens – pecan pie, sugar cookies – and by January you've packed on the pounds! The point is many cravings have deep seated psychological components. In short, food becomes associated with good and bad memories that stick with us.
FITNESS/HEALTH
Craving sweets? This is usually a sign that you're not eating enough carbohydrates. Guys who work out hard go heavy on the protein to repair and build lean muscle. When you're pumping iron and doing cardio, your body also needs carbs to keep the fire burning. If you deny yourself these important energy foods, then your body will crave them, probably in the form of sugary, starchy snacks like pizza or doughnuts.

For many years, Ernest Montgomery has photographed men of the
Dominican Republic. His first photo book, Dominicanos, is a best-seller. Now follows a second volume of his most erotic works: Hermoso. The title of the book alludes to what awaits us inside: the most beautiful men of the Dominican Republic, photographed by an outstanding artist. FROM THE FOREWORD OF HERMOSO BY TERRANCE DEAN: “Hermoso” is a Spanish word meaning handsome, beautiful. It is an aesthetic one embodies and possesses naturally. For Dominican men, it is innate, part of their DNA. In this new project, Hermoso, Ernest Montgomery captures Dominican men in intimate and seductive scenes throughout Santo Domingo, Bonao, Barahona, Las Terrenas, Moca, Haina,
San Cristobal, and San Juan de Maguana. These rural communities are filled with hard-working men, laborers, barbers, taxi drivers, sports players, and small businessmen who are fathers, uncles, and brothers looking to provide for their families and their communities. They are determined men who dream and dream big. They want what every man wants for himself: a house, economic mobility, and a loving family. So they work diligently to make their dream a reality. And though they work hard, they play and love even harder. Montgomery invites us to join him on a journey. It is a mission which provides entrée into the world of these beautiful and handsome men of the
Dominican Republic. We find ourselves being guided inside the countryside, beaches, and barrios of these men. It is inside the corridors of the barrio — in the crevices of the seediest corners that these images reflect the bright colorful interior of Dominican male life — from the barbershop, to the baseball field, the basketball court, the luscious green land, and its majestic beaches. These images are daring, bold, and vibrant. Each holds a story, an insight, and a view into a world that is not often seen to the outsider. You now have access to intimately engage into a privileged world. Take part and allow yourself to be fully immersed inside him, them. Fall deep inside the abyss of the hermoso. Allow your imagination to freely flow. Allow yourself to drift mindlessly. And, while you are there, feel free to feel around, touch, gaze, adore, and appreciate all the wonder.

STEVE KING BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI
We all remember back in the 1850’s when a well-known politician famously said about the influx of Irish immigrants to the United States, “Culture and demographics are our destiny. We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.” For context, remember that back then the Irish were not considered American (i.e. “white”), and therefore were treated as less than human because “real” Americans didn’t
114 | Hotspots.LGBT
appreciate those dirty Irish sullying up the gene pool.
Thankfully discrimination no longer exists in America and as proof we have one day a year when everybody dons shamrock attire and day drinks, and the streets run green with vomit. I am, of course, kidding. Not about the end of discrimination in America (it’s still
very much alive even if the Irish are no longer the targets). Or the green vomit (college towns are excellent places to look for specimens). But about the U.S. Representative who said the super racist sh*t about “somebody else’s babies.” Steve King (R-Iowa) didn’t utter those words over 160 years ago, he said or, rather, Tweeted them on March 12. There was plenty of outrage on Twitter in response to King’s “babies” comment, as there should be, but anyone who has been following King at all during his time in the House knows that he’s a racist creep who thinks that only white people contribute to civilization and that brown people don’t belong here. He is also a raging homophobe. He’s been Creep of the Week more than once before for his hateful and stupid ideas about LGBTQ people.
Imagine that. Racist AND homophobic. It’s almost like if you hate people because of their skin color you’re likely to hate them because of their sexual orientation and gender identity, too.
In May King blasted the Obama Administration for issuing guidelines to schools about keeping trans students safe. King sneered that the next directive would call for all students to become “transgendered vegans.” Shortly after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality nationwide, King said that Justices Elena Kagan and Ruth Bader Ginsburg should be impeached since they’d participated in weddings for same-sex couples and thus should have recused themselves. Shortly before the marriage equality ruling he claimed that it would throw the country into “endless trauma” because Americans would never accept it. He even introduced legislation
that would ban federal courts from hearing any cases related to marriage equality. In 2014, King suggested that gays don’t go to Heaven because they’re sinners. Earlier that year he suggested that business owners had a “God given right” to discriminate against LGBTQ people. I could go on but you could always just Google him. If you haven’t recently eaten. His long litany of racism is on full display as well. All archived on the Internets for all to see. Did I mention that both David Duke and Richard Spencer are Steve King fanboys?
You know, a few years ago in the summer I saw a package of raw meat that had been run over in a Barnes & Noble parking lot. I suspect that if that package of raw meat run over in a parking lot had a mouth, it would say things like, “We can’t restore our meat civilization with somebody else’s meat babies” and “The natural meat family is a meat man and meat woman joined together hopefully in holy meat matrimony blessed by Meat God with meat children.” In other words, Steve King is a hateful meat head. So why not donate $5, roughly the cost of a pound of raw hamburger, to Kim Weaver, who is planning a run against him? D’Anne Witkowski is a poet, writer and comedian living in Michigan with her wife and son. She has been writing about LGBT politics for over a decade. Follow her on Twitter @MamaDWitkowski.
