PTOWN MADNESS! Welcome to the annual Provincetown Issue of Hotspots! If you are thinking about an escape from South Florida over the summer or if you are here on vacation and thinking about planning your next trip, we have got an idea. Take a trip to Ptown. Check out our features on 4th of July, and Bear Invasion, Halloween in Ptown, and The Holidays in Ptown to help you plan an awesome time in one of the US's most gay friendly destinations. While most people enjoy Provincetown in the summer months, there is plenty to do there all year long and if you go during the off season, you can save a bundle. This week, we also have the Spring Arts and Entertainment guide to help you plan your cultural calendar. Many people who don't call South Florida home may think that things really slow down in the region during the off season

spring and summer months, but they couldn't be further from the truth. You will see when you check out our feature, it is chocked full of events for the concert or theatre goer in you! Our weekly Genre Latino feature is an interview with Carmen Carrera the trans activist who got her start on “RuPaul's Drag Race” a few years back. While Carrera is no stranger to controversy, she is doing her best to help highlight trans issues around the world, especially in South America. Catch up with her in this Genre Excluisva interview. Rounding out our content for this week is our Creep of the Week, Roger Severino, Queen We Love with Kitty Meow, Hot Bodies by trainer Tom Bonanti, and of course What's Hot South Florida and our weekly Top 10, both of which will help you make the most of your upcoming week.

“HIV, you won't stand between me and a long, healthy life.” Eddie - Miami, FL Living with HIV since 1987.

Encouraged by the love of my HIV-negative partner, I started HIV treatment 27 years ago. I’ve seen first hand the dramatic advancement of HIV care. When I first started treatment, I had to take 30 pills a day. Now, I just take 3 pills a day with few side effects. Initially, I started treatment to protect my partner from getting HIV. Now, I know that being healthy, taking my medication, exercising, and eating well are the reasons I have a full and productive life today.

The best chatter on Facebook this week

“It doesn’t matter what color or gender or faith you are. There are so many marginalized groups right now under attack. When one of us is vulnerable, all of us are vulnerable.” —Actor PATRICIA ARQUETTE speaking at the GLAAD awards, at which she praised the life and “bravery” of Alexis Arquette, her late transgender sister.

“I think [young people] have no idea how we would be arrested in the streets and kept from ever feeling normal. I grew up when people didn’t believe it when you told them Liberace was gay. Liberace!”

—Actor HARVEY FIERSTEIN, speaking to the Hollywood Reporter on the problem with today’s LGBTQ youth. WFOR-CBS.

“I thought I would be disappointing them if they knew I was gay…”

—Entertainer BARRY MANILOW, 70, explaining why he keep his same-sex partner a secret for 40 years.

“Hey, old couple trying to sell your cute house on 21st Court in Wilton Manors: Move your car with the Trump/Pence sticker and it might sell!” —Photojournalist STEPHEN R. LANG, Fort Lauderdale

“It feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I was living a lie.”

—WWII veteran PATRICIA DAVIES, aged 90, of the United Kingdom, who just came out as transgender. Davies was married for many years to a female but feared coming out as trans until now.

“I’d say this cover represents me getting my long awaited revenge on all those boys who didn’t want to hold hands in public when I was finding out about love for the first time…” —Model ANDREJA PEJIC, who just made history by becoming the first transgender model on the cover of the Portugal edition of GQ magazine

“With the latest revelations, I think we can all deduce that it would not be possible to place so many people with direct connections to Putin on one campaign unless it was being managed by one person with all the connections. Putin, Manafort, Flynn, Paige, Stone, et al. There is no conceivable way for these people to be coincidentally hired by any [one] administration. These are people bought and paid for by Russia. And it will all come out at some point. This is not going to end well…” —EVAN LOBEL, Fort Lauderdale

“I mean…props to your kid for being on the honor roll, but putting that dopey bumper sticker on the car is more permanent than a tattoo… and what if he flunks out and is selling hand-jobs for loose change in a month or two? You just ruined a perfectly good car!” —ADAM COHEN, social commentator, West Palm Beach

“We believe climate change should be addressed on a global basis through multi-national agreements such as the Paris Agreement. We hope that the United States continues to play a constructive role in furthering solutions to these challenges, and at GE, we will continue to lead with our technology and actions.”

—JEFF IMMELT, CEO of General Electric, taking President Donald Trump to task for his anti-climate and anti-science agenda.

Independence Week Home is where the heart is and odds are high you will lose your heart and a lot more in the cape tip town of Provincetown where men, men, and more men are the order of the day for Provincetown's 4th of July celebration. Dubbed the gayest America's favorite beach town, the nation's birthday takes on new meaning in a town where locals join visitors from around the world to celebrate the freedom to be exactly who

Toga Time in Provincetown! With a Carnival 2017 theme of Gods and Goddesses, the mind reels at the costume and parade float possibilities. From the opening “everyone in the pool” party to the colossal Drag Bingo, to the largest parade on Cape Cod, Provincetown's Carnival, August 12th-19th is THE gay, gay, gay, party of the year attracting thousands of visitors. Finally, in spite of the crowds and partying, Provincetown has no shortage of getaway spaces to be with someone special. Grab your sneakers, pack a backpack with food, water and essentials and walk the West-End Jetty over to magical Long Point, an island unto itself adjacent to the town. This spit of land offers a gorgeous stretch of beach and total privacy. A leisurely walk along the rocks should take you about 40 minutes and make sure you head back before dusk. If you are looking for the quintessential P'town moment with your new or old someone this is the place and the price is right. Free to one and all.

PTOWN

Don't Look Now but Here Come the Bears! The incoming and outgoing parade of men begins with the sly whispers that reach a resounding cheer come the 8th of July, “The Bears are back!” Provincetown's annual Bear Week, July 8th-16th is one of the happiest times of the year for nightclubs, retail shops, art galleries, and perhaps the biggest winner of them all - restaurants. No secret Bears love to eat and food and libations for every budget are found all over town. If oysters really do the trick for you, take advantage of Happy Hour and fresh off the boat oysters for $1. For a truly great “time out” head to the benches in front of the historic Town Hall (Back in the day this was known as the “Meat Rack”). Enjoy your lunch al fresco and enjoy the ever changing talent show passing by. It is the best view in town. The official Bear Week schedule at PTownBears.org offers a dizzying line-up of events and parties happening at clubs all over town including the Fur Sunday Pre-Party and the Bear Boat Sunday Cruise. Other, must not miss, events include the late, late show, free to one and all, happening in front of the downtown pizza shop, in the heart of the action. Bars are closed, the music is done and the last chapter of the night unfolds with a massive street gathering that continues into the wee hours.

PTOWN

Mix, mingle and dance your patootie off at the one of the town's biggest outdoor dance parties and home to THE legendary Tea. DJ superstars keep the dance floor bumping and grinding, while above and below the wide expanse of the outdoor deck are hundreds of meet and greet opportunities. The waterfront celebrations on the 4th of July will be extended to flow into a front and center view of the fireworks

celebration happening over Provincetown Harbor.

they are. The town's main drag, nestled between the harbor and the magical dunes, is non-stop action during Independence Week- June 29July 7. Yes, there is so much going on it takes a week to fit it all in. The pulsating music reverberates down the center of town as the week kicks into high gear with an Underwear Party on June 29th. Here's your chance to see what the boys have to offer! It is party central all along the mile long main drag with more than one fun in the sun, pool party.

Boys, Bears, Gods & Goddesses and all, it's time for you to come back home to P'town! Hotspots.LGBT | 51

Provincetown. Beads and bangles and whatnots can be found across town at thrift stores, retail shops, and specialized costumers, for the town is Mardi Gras central when it comes to finding the perfect, and if you choose, outrageous get-up for Halloween. Dressing up is P'town's stock in trade and the shops pretty much have the market cornered when it comes to the, something for everyone, outfit. As for make-up there are a number of shops ready to do you, in whatever fantasy you desire. Once your look is set you are ready for the non-stop revelry happening everywhere. You have to love a town where an entire street turns into a haunted neighborhood, a local theater is transformed into a walk-thru house of chills and thrills and the town hall hosts an epic

You don a costume, wait till dark and collect bags of candy-is there any wonder why Halloween trick or treating is one of our favorite childhood holidays? For most grownups Halloween is simply a memory but in the Never Land, better known as Provincetown, Halloween is one of the biggest celebrations of the year where trick or treating takes on an entirely new meaning and the trick may actually be more fun than the treat. When it comes to Halloween nobody does it better than Provincetown where it is never a one night affair. The festivities begin to kick on October 27th when Provincetown's retail shops start humming as visitors and locals build their costumes for the week-end. There is no need for anyone to schlepp a costume to

bacchanal is the annual arrival of the bears for Spooky Bear Weekend. Cubs, Otters, Chubs, Pandas, Polars and of course the requisite Goldilocks are all welcome to join our hirsute friends at a number of Bear events happening all weekend long including the Greet n' Treat, Spooky Tea, Spooky Ball, Spooky Fun House.. you get the idea it is Spooky Bear time all around. The restaurants are all hip to the fact that Bears and friends love good food and you will find a number of special menus tailored especially to those manly appetites. Check out PTownEvents.com for a score card of events that will increase as Halloween draws closer. Everyone wants to get into the act to re-live and celebrate a holiday which is way too much fun to leave to the kids.

Masquerade Ball on Saturday, October 28. Day and night, the nightclubs come to life with no shortage of entertainment and this is Provincetown, so DJs and juke boxes are pumping at a variety of locations throughout the town. What good is it to build an amazing costume if there is nowhere to show it off? In P'town there is no better stage than the street. Provincetown's mile long main drag offers the best free show in town. Imaginative, provocative, and downright ingenious, the array of costumes is mind boggling and the best viewing can be found in the endless street parade. It is too much fun to hold for one night so you can depend on the parade partying to begin on October 27 and continue thru 31. Adding a fun dimension to the Halloween

u What is your favorite number to perform and why? My all-time favorite song to perform is “Shackles by Mary Mary. Victor Calderone remixed it and debuted it at Crowbar for the Sunday night party called Anthem. I remember it was like a rush for all of the divas of the night to get together or to see who would be able to perform the song first. It became one of the most powerful anthems in dance music history. Jeffrey Sanker had me perform it at all his major circuit parties. “Bathhouse: the Musical!” is a rousing, carousing musical montage, with music and lyrics by Tim Evanicki and Esther Daack. Presented by Empire Stage (1140 North Flagler Ave, Fort Lauderdale), the show will kick off its run on Thursday, April 13 and will play through April 30. This musical follows the story of Billy, a wide-eyed youth venturing into a bathhouse for the very first time. He's looking for love, but soon realizes that the other patrons are looking for something… a little more temporary. With some guidance, Billy soon learns the ins and outs of bathhouse etiquette. Tim Evanicki said: “I am so excited to be remounting “Bathhouse: The Musical!” in Fort Lauderdale! The National Tour enjoyed such a successful run when they were here in 2008, I'm thrilled to be bringing the show back to such great audiences like the ones we find in South Florida!” “Bathhouse: the Musical!” premiered at the Orlando International Fringe Theater Festival in Orlando, Florida in June 2006 before the show found a home at the Footlight Theater in the same city. there, the show's success blossomed to include productions in five countries in North America, Europe, and Australia. The show features four guys, four bath towels and tons of campy musical numbers poking fun at the cultural of gay bathhouses. The cast features 'Bathhouse' veterans and newcomers. Timothy Oriani returns to reprise the role of Billy, that he played in the 2015 Rochester, NY production. Sean Patrick Philibin will play Maurice, a Bathhouse regular that has all the boys' attention, a role which he played in 2014 in Orlando, FL. New comers Greg Buckheit steps into the bathtowel of Teddy, a young twink with a penchant for bears, singing one of the show's most popular songs: “Bearchaser.” Tim Garnham join the cast from NYC, as “David,” the slightly-effeminate gym bunny. Garnham is no stranger to the Empire Stage, as he recently performed there as part of the National Tour cast of 'Naked Boys Singing.' The show runs 90 minutes and begins performances at Empire Stage on April 13 and runs through April 30. Tickets are from $35-$50 and can be purchased by going to: Bathhousethemusical.com; or by calling the box office at 1-888-202-1708.

Especially if that 'Home' happens to be Provincetown

Don we now our gay apparel and get ye to Provincetown's Holly Folly celebration December 1-3, for what has to be the gayest holiday strolls in the country. The tone is set with the early morning Jingle Bell Run down Commercial Street when “undie or mini- bathing suit clad runners brave the elements and make their way down the center of Provincetown. This is not weather permitting, rather this is a, run in any kind of weather, ending in a cozy warmup at a local restaurant featuring a champagne brunch. intrepid, brief wearing, souls. Another fun event which should be sub-titled “pace yourself!” is the Inn Stroll. A dozen plus inns open their doors to show off their holiday finery, introduce guests to their accommodations and offer a repast and a libation. This is a fun, free event giving you a chance to peek behind the curtains, but keep in mind, in order to appreciate all of the inns, sipping the refreshments may be a good idea or you will never make it thru to the Stroll's finish. Holidays means shopping and if you 'jones' for bargains the Shop Hop-Great Things Come in Provincetown Baskets, is a sales bonanza. Provincetown's eclectic retailers offer steep discounts on a number of one-of-a-kind gifts and many of the stores are happy to ship your purchases home so no need to tote those bags. Your first step should be registering at the Holly Folly headquarters located in the center of town. In addition to a list of participating retailers you can sign up to compete for a number of special prizes. Save your appetite for one of the most popular events of the week-end - Souper Saturday. Just follow the scent to a downtown restaurant for a sampling of soups from many of the town's most popular eateries. Drinks are also available for what swiftly turns into a “If you taste mine, I'll taste yours,” party. This is great fun and the perfect opportunity to mix and mingle with both locals and visitors. As night falls the town literally glows with thousands of sparkling lights bathed in the warming glow of the Pilgrim Monument, the all-granite monolith, lit for the season, stands tall as the town's unofficial sentry. No end to the entertainment including the Gay Men's Chorus at the Town Hall and also happening is the Ugly Sweater/Hard Candy Party, some rather unconventional holiday caroling and a production of A Christmas Carol bearing little resemblance to what Mr. Dickens had in mind. You can finish off the week-end by wearing your best pajamas to the Sunday morning, “I woke up like this,” Drag Brunch. Nowhere else will you find a holiday celebration like this one and so as not to miss a thing find a complete schedule at PTown.org. When you need it bad- P'town has it good Say goodbye to what was and welcome what will be in 2018 with Provincetown's First Light Celebration & Fireworks December 29 - January 2. This is, party like it's July, throughout the town with a wide variety of entertainment from drag to headliners to something for Von Trapp wanna be's- A Sound of Music sing-a-thon. Fittingly enough the party ends with a gigantic fireworks display over Provincetown Harbor at dusk.

“Drag Race” community got to know me right out of the club scene. I'm now 31. I am a wife. I am a stepmother. I'm still a lot of fun (laughs), but I'm way more responsible than I've ever been, and I'm happy about it too. I see myself as a very privileged trans woman; I'm able to experience what it feels like to have love and have children and work and survive, so I feel like in that sense I've changed a whole lot. Now, I see myself in a totally different place and I wanna be able to (tell) trans people, “You have more possibilities than you even realize.”

me as seriously as they should. I read the comments, which I probably shouldn't, but I do. And it's a shame, but it's not my responsibility to change everybody's mind. You just have to lead by example, you need to put in the work. I'm a trans woman, but you know, I can model, I can act, I can be an activist. Little by little, slowly people will begin to understand that and not take me so much as a joke. Continuing to raise awareness of LGBTQ issues

internationally I'm working on Venezuela and Chile, and I'm trying to see if I can get either a production company or a network to help take me on the road and explore other cities and other countries and their LGBT laws. Basically, see where we're at on a global scale. I have a ton of fans in Brazil, so I wanna be able to just continue feeding them the inspiration they need. I mean, if there's 2.5 million that will show up for a gay pride celebration, I don't understand why a couple hundred thousand couldn't show up to demand equal rights or protection laws, so I hope that they take it upon themselves to want better.

Going global with her

trans activism I set out on a journey to contribute my community activism outside of the United States. I wanted to take the same things that I learned here from people like Laverne (Cox), Janet (Mock), Caitlyn (Jenner) and Jenna (Talackova) and connect back to my roots, to really go back to South America and Central America and try to be an activist. So, I started off with Mexico, where they allowed me to basically bring trans issues to Mexican news stations. I was able to bring that to light. I did the same thing in Columbia and met with LGBTQ organizations in those countries to really bring information to their mainstream media. The price of living out

loud Just me being a trans woman, people don't take 122 | Hotspots.LGBT

Next steps: bringing LGBTQ history into the classroom

I have two kids at home, age 12 and eight, and they know so much about LGBTQ history. I taught them myself, and they've seen my transition and they'll educate you if you sit down with them and ask them questions. That really inspired me. I have taken it upon myself to link up with an organization who is helping me create a K-12 curriculum for teaching LGBTQ history in the classrooms. I'm gonna ship that out to every single school in America I possibly can and hope that we can educate our children on our history to help break the stigma and help start the conversation on school grounds and help end bullying and better prepare our youth.

ROGER SEVERINO BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI

Honestly, it’s hard to keep up. Even with so many positions in the Trump Administration left unfilled, he’s still stacking the deck with swamp monsters. It seems like, in order to work in this administration, you have to have an utter disdain for whatever you’re going to be in charge of. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos hates public education. Secretary

of State Rex Tillerson thinks the State Department is useless. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry is currently channeling his energy into b!tching about the election of a gay student body president at Texas A&M. And then there’s Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price, who cares about neither health nor humans, especially not

LGBTQ humans. So it should come as no surprise, but is still incredibly disappointing and gross, that Trump appointed Roger Severino to lead the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Civil Rights. So who is Roger Severino? Oh, just some guy from the rabidly anti-gay Heritage Foundation who use to be the director of the DeVos Center for Religion and Civil Society (yes, that DeVos). Severino’s no fan of Section 1557, the nondiscrimination provision of the Affordable Care Act. He believes that medical professionals should be allowed to discriminate against transgender patients if said medical professional believes “that maleness and femaleness are biological realities to be respected and affirmed, not altered or treated as diseases.”Which is interesting because while he claims to respect the biological realness of women, he sure doesn’t support their reproductive rights. He also thinks marriage equality is a threat to religious liberty because it’s a religious right to discriminate against icky gay people, thank you very much. Severino is an ardent defender of North Carolina’s anti-LGBT law HB2, often referred to as “the bathroom bill” because of its dumbf*ckery telling trans people they basically can’t use public restrooms. HB2 has cost North Carolina, according to the Associated Press, nearly $4 billion dollars. But that’s a small price to pay for dehumanizing trans folk, apparently! Considering that Severino’s job is now to ensure “that people have equal access and opportunities to participate in certain health care and human services programs without unlawful discrimination,” I’m sure he’ll protect LGBTQ rights real good. “I could not think of a more dangerous person to head up the Office of Civil Rights at HHS,” Senior Vice President of Policy and Political

Affairs of Human Rights Campaign JoDee Winterhof said in a statement. “Once again, Donald Trump is declaring war against our community by appointing anti-LGBTQ people at all levels of his administration. Mr. Severino takes pride in being a stark opponent of the LGBTQ community and has made it clear that his number one priority is to vilify and degrade us.” Remember when Trump said “LGBTQ” during the Republican National Convention and people were all, “He’s a champion of equality!” It was a silly thing to believe then, and it’s completely delusional to believe now. Severino’s appointment is, as Executive Director of National Center for Transgender Equality Mara Keisling, said in a statement, essentially “the fox in charge of the hen house.” Keisling continued, “He has made attacking women’s and LGBT people’s access to health care one of the centerpieces of his career, while his baseless claims about protections for transgender people—repeated over and over without any regard for the consequences on transgender people’s lives—betray a fundamental misunderstanding of federal civil rights laws, medical science, the reality of what it means to be transgender.” In other words, we can expect that the disregard for transgender health and lives to worsen under Severino, which is, no doubt, exactly how he wants it. D’Anne Witkowski is a poet, writer and comedian living in Michigan with her wife and son. She has been writing about LGBT politics for over a decade. Follow her on Twitter @MamaDWitkowski.
