COVER STORY

STEVE MCALEER FROM IMPULSE GROUP SOUTH FLORIDA CHATS WITH HOTSPOTS By Ian Maloney teve McAleer is the President of Impulse Group South Florida which is a local chapter of Impulse Group, an allvolunteer group of activists who have banded together to help fight HIV and provide opportunities for men to have a chance to talk about HIV/AIDS and promote healthy lifestyles and break social barriers that limit diagnosis and treatment among gay community. After seeing HIV rates soaring among gay men, Impulse Group founder Jose Ramos decided to do something about it in his hometown of Los Angeles, CA. He met with a group of friends to talk about the issue and in collaboration with AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), whom quickly came onboard as a key

S

42 | Hotspots.LGBT

player. Together they organized the first Impulse Group. Finding quick success in LA, the group expanded south of the border and opened a chapter in Mexico followed by a third chapter right here in South Florida. It was a pleasure to chat with McAleer, who, besides being a full time realtor with Douglas Elliman Real Estate, is serving as president of the local Impulse chapter as well as the director of events for Impulse Group, the larger organization that is expanding across the globe. We asked McAleer to tell us a little more about Impulse Group of South Florida, how he got involved in the organization, and where he sees the fight against HIV/AIDS heading in the future.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN IMPULSE GROUP? Originally, though some friends of mine, I got to meet the founder of Impulse, Jose Ramos. About five or six years ago, I saw that he had founded the group out in LA because numerous people close to his age were contracting HIV and he really wanted to do something about it. He didn’t feel like in today’s world so many people should be contracting the disease. I found out that they were looking to expand into South Florida led by AJ Alegria, a close friend of mine, as the local chapter President because the infection rate was so high locally. I went to the first recruiting meeting that Jose and AJ hosted here in Fort Lauderdale. Their mission and passion to make

We are an advocacy and social group of gay men educated and passionate in all aspects of gay men’s health.

a difference really sparked my interest. At that point I decided to volunteer to join so I have been with the organization since it formed in

2013. I started as the director of events, and then I became vice president until late last year. After successfully leading a team of volunteers to build and run the organization for over three years, AJ stepped down in December 2016. At that point I was honored to be voted in to take over the Presidency to lead an amazing and talented board of directors and members who I consider my family.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF IMPULSE GROUP OR WHAT DO YOU GUYS SET OUT TO DO? Impulse Group has 18 chapters around the world including chapters in the U.S., Asia, London, Brazil and Mexico. We are also working on expansion into Chicago this year as well as areas in Western Europe. Impulse Group South Florida is a lifestyle. We are an advocacy and social group of gay men educated and passionate in all aspects of gay men’s health. We produce fun and exciting events that create a safe and comfortable space to talk openly about things such as STI’s (sexually transmitted infections) and substance abuse and provide education and resources for those who need assistance. At most of our events, we offer free HIV testing to make sure that everyone knows their status and can

Hotspots.LGBT | 43

deal with it properly. We started as an HIV advocacy group but because there are so many things that affect our health as members of the gay community, we have expanded our overall services to hit those pillars and more.

WHY IS A GROUP LIKE IMPULSE NEEDED IN SOUTH FLORIDA? South Florida, including Broward County, is currently the number one location in the country for new HIV infections, especially with the younger demographic of those under the age of 35 years old. I think that that has happened due to a lack of targeted education and a lack of open, non-stigmatizing conversation. We really strive to throw events that make it easier to talk about your status, about stigma, and about all forms of prevention so that people will be more educated and not feel guilty or embarrassed about going and getting tested. We plan events that make it as comfortable, as easy, and as smooth as possible to be able to know your status so that if you are positive you can get on a proper regime to stay undetectable and stay healthy, or if you are negative, to stay negative. WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FIGHT AGAINST HIV GOING OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS? Currently there are numerous prevention methods available including Condoms, PrEP and PEP (post exposure prophylaxis). We do, however, see fewer people using condoms now because of the availability of

PrEP or PEP. We strive to make sure that as many people as possible know their status. If everyone that is positive knows they are positive and stays undetectable and the people who are negative use the prevention tools that are available to them, we would virtually eradicate the disease. I feel we can stop its spreading. But, the stigma that is out there often makes people not feel comfortable getting tested, start on their antiretroviral medicine or even disclose their status to people when appropriate. The only thing we can do is keep fighting the fight to make sure that people have all the information they need in their sexual health tool kit to remain healthy. Hopefully the treatment and prevention methods continue to get stronger and more successful. HOW REALISTIC IS THE IDEA OF AN AIDS FREE GENERATION IN OUR LIFETIME? Well, we all have to stay as optimistic and vigilant as possible to continue to push our government into more research and getting the pharmaceutical companies to develop the medication that will eradicate the disease. I know there is a lot of effort going into it, but I am hoping that momentum doesn’t decrease. I think once we can get rid of the stigma that still exists about HIV that alone will help. If you are comfortable about talking about your status and using the prevention tools available, fewer people will transmit the disease.

If you are interested in Impulse Group South Florida, you can find more information at facebook. com/impulseSoFL. They invite the entire community to join them at their next event, the return of their Evolution Pool Party, which will take place on Sunday, May 21 at the National Hotel in Miami Beach. The event will feature DJ Dan Slater. Tickets are limited but admission is free. They will be providing free HIV testing on site as well as other educational opportunities and lots of fun! 44 | Hotspots.LGBT

Matilda the musical Revolting Children, Living in Revolting Times |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

By Scott Holland IME Magazine's #1 Show of the Year, “Matilda The Musical”, opens at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts April 25 for a limited two week run through May 7. The show is based on the novel of the same name by Roald Dahl who also wrote classics children's stories like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “James and the Giant Peach,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” and many others. “Matilda The Musical” is directed by Tony Award winner Matthew Warchus (“God of Carnage”), who helms this production with a book by Tony Award-winning playwright Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Australian comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin. The show is the winner of over 70 international awards including four Tony Awards and a recordbreaking seven Olivier Awards including Best Musical. Matilda is a precocious five year-old girl with the gift of telekinesis who loves reading, overcomes obstacles caused by 52 | Hotspots.LGBT

her family and school, and helps her teacher to reclaim her life. The title role is played by three actresses; Gabby Gutierrez, Jaime MacLean and Jenna Weir. The principal cast also features (alphabetically): Jennifer Bowles (Miss Honey), Dan Chameroy (Miss Trunchbull), Keisha T. Fraser (Mrs. Phelps), Matt Harrington (Mr. Wormwood) and Darcy Stewart (Mrs. Wormwood). It was a pleasure to sit down with Jennifer Bowles for this exclusive Hotspots Interview. Bowles is originally from Fort Lauderdale and is looking forward to seeing friends and family, Were you always an actor even as a child? No, I absolutely wasn't. I was a ballet dancer when I was little and very shy. No one ever expected me to become an actor. What was your first professional/paid gig?

Jennifer Bowles (Miss Honey). I did a tour of the musical “Wonderful Town” when I was just out of college. When did you know performing would be your career? In high school I made the transition from ballet to theater and that's when I knew I wanted to do this as a living. What has been your favorite role other than this one? My favorite show that I have been in was “American Idiot.” It was my first Broadway show and there is something magical about your first Broadway show. The actors in that production were very special, and it felt like we were a bunch of misfits doing this awesome rock show on Broadway. What is your fantasy role? It would be playing Audrey in “Little Shop of Horrors.” I played Audrey in high school and would love to play her as an adult. What should the south Florida audiences expect from this production of “Matilda”? I think they should expect it to be different than the movie as its much more like the book.

However the show has added plotline, so it goes farther than the book. It does go much deeper and darker and it is one of the most beautiful shows I have ever done or seen. The music is brilliant and it's an important show as it's about a couple people who believe their voices can't be heard. Then, they meet this little girl who helps them. The theme of the show is “Even though I am [only] one person I can still make a difference.” The Ensemble of “Matilda The Musical” includes Jacob Anderson, Gabby Beredo, Darren Burkett, Jacqueline Burtney, Eric Craig, Talia Consentino, Stephen Diaz, Gregory Diaz IV, Blake Ferrante, Keisha T. Fraser, Heidi Friese, Michael D. Jablonski, Jim Kaplan, Marisa Kennedy, Anthony MacPherson, Tyler McKenzie, Soren Thayne Miller, Gray Monczka, Brittany Nicholas, Abigail Nicholson, Justin Packard, Molly Richardson, Kim Sava, Liz Schmitz, Brandon Stonestreet and Isabella Stuebing. The production has sets and costumes by Tony Award winner Rob Howell, with choreography by Peter Darling, orchestrations, additional music and musical supervision by Christopher Nightingale, lighting by Tony Award winner Hugh Vanstone, and sound by Simon Baker. Tickets are available at the Broward Center AutoNation Box Office, 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33312, BrowardCenter.org or call 954-462-0222. Ticket prices start at $35. More than 40 films selected for this year's program By Ian Maloney

T

he 19th annual edition of the MiFo LGBT Film Festival kicks off on Friday, April 21 and continues through Sunday, April 30. Films will be shown at Regal Cinemas South Beach (1120 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach) and at The Scottish Rite Temple (471 NW 3rd Street, Miami). This year, the program includes films from around the world including many that are making their premiere in the US. In an age when studios are practically ignoring LGBT subject lines, yet films like “Moonlight” are winning Academy Awards for Best Picture, festivals like MiFo are an important vehicle to get attention for films that never would see nationwide release otherwise. From short films and documentaries to full length feature films, there is something for everyone at MiFo. In this week's feature, we have highlighted several of the films but for the full program visit MiFoFilm.com. You can also find info there on how to buy tickets, venue information and much more. Let's go out to the movies! Stay tuned to Hotspots as next week we will highlight films from the second week of MiFo's programming.

The Scottish Rite Temple•Friday, April 21•8 p.m. Dyed hair, subversive rock music loving Ned attends a boarding school where everything is all about rugby. Initially happy living in his dorm alone and content with drawing as little attention to himself as possible, Ned's world is

Both Ned and Connor form an unlikely friendship which forces them to reckon with questions of loyalty and selfinterest. “Handsome Devil” is an Irish film from 2016 and is directed by John Butler. undocumented gay man who grew up in North Carolina and fell in love with this country. This film follows Moises as he fights for the American Dream. An ideal character for challenging stereotypes about undocumented immigrants and same- sex couples, Moises' story relates directly to the 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S. and LGBTQ individuals fighting for equality and civil rights. Moises Serrano and Director Tiffany Rhynard are expected to be on hand for the screening and will participate in a Q & A after the film. A Change of Heart

Regal Cinemas South Beach•Saturday, April 22•4:45 p.m. This full length feature film, which stars Jim Belushi was made in Miami. The film follows Hank who is frustrated with the cards life has dealt him and whose circumstances have driven him to fear diversity, yet his Central

Florida town is adhering less and less to the white, straight profile with which he's comfortable. After Hank suffers a heart attack, he needs a heart transplant and you will never guess whose heart he gets- a Puerto Rican Drag Queen. “A Change of Heart” conveys the sort of story America needs right now and it reminds us that even the most hardened among us can learn to embrace difference, accept love, and move on with life. During the presentation of “A Change of Heart,” MiFo will honor Ally Award Winners Gloria and Emilio Estefan.

“Something Like Summer” is a musical drama and was the winner of the Best Director prize at Philadelphia's qFlix Festival . The film is making its premiere in the Southeast US. It follows Benjamin who is the only gay kid in his high school with the courage to come out of the closet. He puts off his dream of becoming a singer due to the bullies and negative things that he has to put up with on a daily basis. Instead of spending his time pursuing his dreams, he “stalks” Tim who is a new kid in town and is an athlete. “Something Like Summer” follows the course of true love over the span of a dozen years, from awkward

adolescence through challenging adulthood, featuring seven original musical numbers and the artwork of a talented young artist. Santa & Andres (Santa y Andrés)

Regal Cinemas South Beach•Saturday April 22•9:15 p.m. Publicly gay novelist Andrés has been banned by the Cuban government from writing another word. With a political rally coming up, they intend to keep Andrés under close scrutiny in order to prevent him from communicating with the press. Enter Santa, who is sent to Andrés' countryside home to watch over him for the next three days. Despite their mutual distrust and suspicion, the pair find themselves quietly questioning their allegiances and ultimately coming to understand one another. “Santa & Andres” delivers a thoughtful, relevant rumination on the notions of hatred and tolerance. This film is directed by Carlos Lechuga and runs 105 minutes in Spanish with English subtitles.

Regal Cinemas South Beach•Sunday April 23•4:45 p.m. This coming of age tale is directed by Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson and is in Icelandic with English subtitles. “Heartstone” tells the tale of two youngsters, Thor and Christian, who live the classic story every gay boy has gone through- falling in love with your best friend. It's gay unrequited love with all the angst you would expect form such a tale. Throughout the summer, the boys experience ups and downs, but when summer ends, and the harsh nature of Iceland takes back its rights, it's time to leave the playground and face adulthood. The film won Best GLBT Film at Queer Lion Film Festival, Gold Q Award at Venice Film Festival and The Audience Award for Best Film at Chicago International Film Festival. Summertime (L'estate Addosso)

Regal Cinemas South Beach•Sunday, April 23•7 p.m. This Italian film is directed by Gabriele Muccino and is in Italian with English subtitles. It follows 18-year-old Marco who, during the summer of high school final

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO

Hmmm…

NEW SLOGANS FOR UNITED?

Following the public relations disaster for United Airlines after forcing an unwilling passenger to give up his paid seat by dragging him, bloodied and beaten, off the plane, there has been no shortage of new slogans for the airline. Some of the best we’ve heard: “No volunteers? Unseat. Beat. Repeat.” “Now serving punch.” “We put the hospital in hospitality.” “You carry on, we carry off.”

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH

WE DON’T TALK ABOUT THESE THINGS…

Restaurants in Denver, Colorado, where recreational marijuana is legal, are reportedly having a tough time finding staff. The weed business pays $22 an hour with full benefits working in a climate-controlled greenhouse. Working in the kitchen of a restaurant…hot, stressful, a lot less pay and often no benefits. If that isn’t enough to deal with, restaurants are dealing with a 2% decline in alcohol sales because patrons would rather get high than drink, believes Denver restaurateur Bobby Stuckey.

We so desperately needed to know this! BuzzFeed has listed “41 Things Guys Secretly Do That They Don’t Want You To Know About.” Among them: #4 Sniffing underwear lying on the ground to tell if it’s acceptable to wear again. #14 Farting in an elevator and praying that no one gets in. #29 “Forgetting” to lift the toilet seat. #37 Loafing around watching TV with one hand in their underwear.

THE PRICE OF GREATNESS?

Donald Trump spent years being critical of President Barack Obama’s personal travel, but the Orange One’s own travel expenses as president in his first year are on pace to surpass what Obama spent on travel in his entire eight years. Trump’s weekend vacations to his private club in Florida have cost taxpayers an estimated $20 million in just 80 days, according to CNN.

hether you relish long hours working out in the gym, or you just want to get in and get out and do a good job, no doubt you want to make each moment count. The following techniques will help you melt away fat, build muscle and burn more calories swiftly and efficiently!

While You Workout

1. Tune in to your workout, tune out distractions. Multi-tasking is helpful at work, but texting, e-mailing, and watching TV while you're on the recumbent bike or lifting weights can take serious attention away from exercising. Unless your workout program is on your phone, put it away and pay attention to your breathing, heart rate, muscle contractions, stretching and most especially your proper form when lifting! 2. Give it your all; put everything you've got into it. The more muscles you use, the more calories and oxygen you burn. When you are power walking or on a cardio machine, grab some weights and do curls and shoulder raises. As you work lower body, move arms and torso and make them

feel it, too. Let go of the rails on the elliptical or treadmill so that your core muscles must work harder to keep you stable and in motion. 3. Be more forceful with yourself. Doing the same old thing all the time is boring and after a spell, results will diminish. Gravity is a great calorie burner, when you walk, bike or run, do it at an incline. Mix up doing weights with some weight bearing exercises like push-ups, jump squats and dips. Jump rope, jog around the building, or hop on a cardio machine between sets to give an extra calorie burning jolt to ordinary weight training. 4. Drink heavily. Yes, but let me qualify that! Besides refreshing and cooling you, hydrating with plenty of icy cold water can bump up your metabolism by about 5% as your body works to warm the fluid. Coffee is the best pre- workout drink. Besides revving up your metabolism, caffeine gives you a renewed sense of well- being so that exercise will not seem so intimidating. 5. Picture your intended results, dream big and work even harder. Visualization is a proven technique whereby you picture the muscle group you are working in the mirror and in your head. Then with perfect form, execute each rep of each set focusing upon the muscle contractions and stretches. Besides visualization, many guys report achieving great results by training with a buddy or partner who is just a little fitter and stronger; that little bit of friendly competition can push you to work that much harder!

Adora: Teddy, I love your new Pop Surrealist T-shirt from the artist's series at Harold Golen Gallery…fits you really nicely too. Teddy Behr: Harold and his gallery are amazing. I remember his old vintage shop on South Beach in the early 90s. His gallery devoted to Pop Surrealist Art in Wynwood is celebrating its tenth anniversary in September. Adora: Harold grew up in Miami and his mid-century pop references of Florida (and California) are all accessible and fun….we had midCentury in Cuba too so it all reminds me of being a kid in Havana…when we rediscovered the mid-century thing. Harold's gallery has a unique look that really reinforces the way you experience what he features. He was already moving in that direction back in his old South Beach store. Teddy Behr: Mmmmm…. not all galleries are so

consistent. Harold collects all the things he shows, so it's really a lifelong commitment to a specific art movement, which actually did start in California in the 1960's .He was just telling me he has a whole collection of Emilio Pucci shirts; including the one he was wearing that day. Golen says the Pop Surrealist Movement was pioneered by Robert Williams, who was an assistant to Ed Roth, an illustrator. Williams started Juxtapose Magazine in 1994, which became a chronicle of the Pop Surrealists, though at the time a lot of people called it ¨Lo-brow¨art.

wide range of things to see. Juxtapose Magazine eventually became more about skateboard art but a new Pop Surrealism Mag called 'High Fructose', started up in 2005, and they have it at the Gallery. Adora: It's all really fun; sometimes kind of like using advertising as a source for a higher level of content, but like other forms of Surrealism, it also has a dreamy and especially a dark side… What's the current main exhibit? Teddy Behr: Right now, the main show is an exposition by an artist named Gieseke,

Adora: I like the way the art connects to tattoos and comic books and other popular art. And I love the original rasters illustrations from Mexican Pulp Novella's that Harold has; they have a lot of drama and fun. Teddy: Oh, like the one of the muscular guy dragging the other muscular guy by his tank top? They're really fun. In his gallery, Golen has included a lot of work that fits into his vision so it's a

who definitely has the humor / irony thing AND the dark side happening together. Without the dark side it's just Disneyland so I guess there is no use trying to leave it out of the equation…just like day dissolves into night.” Adora: And then the sun comes up again …just when it is time to go home!

RAMZAN KADYROV BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI

File under: More bad news about Russia. I know, I know. It seems like every time you turn around there’s yet another news story about Russia. It’s hard to keep up. And to all of the Trump apologists who shrug off the growing evidence of Russia not only meddling in our election, but also of having direct ties to the Trump campaign and

114 | Hotspots.LGBT

administration, f#ck you, you do not care about our country, and you suck. So, anyway, while Trump’s been busy Tweeting about Russia being “fake news” and how the real story is Obama spying on him through Trump Tower’s gold-plated microwave, gay men in Chechnya are being rounded up and killed for the crime of

being gay, according to Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta. According to the paper, approximately 100 men were rounded up in a “sweep,” and that at least three have been killed, but it is suspected that number is actually higher. Russia as a whole is not a great place to be gay, but Chechnya is especially bad. According to Novaya Gazeta, even being accused of being gay is enough to destroy a man’s reputation. Actually being gay is enough to get you killed, either by the authorities, or by your family via a so-called “honor killing.” Apparently the sweep was prompted by a request made in March by an LGBT group seeking official permission to hold a pride parade. The Russian LGBT Network put out a statement on April 2 offering emergency aid and asking people who are in danger to contact them. “We are actively cooperating with human rights activists in Russia and abroad, and are ready to evacuate people,” the statement read in part. In other words, this is deadly serious. Especially when you take into consideration the fact that for Chechnya’s leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, the whole thing is a joke. Or, more specifically, an “April Fool’s joke.” Alvi Karimov, a spokesman for Kadyrov, said that reports of gay men being rounded up were “absolute lies and disinformation.” His proof? There are no gay people in Chechnya, he said. “You cannot detain and persecute people who simply do not exist in the republic,” he said, according to the New York Times. “If there were such people in Chechnya, the law-enforcement organs wouldn’t need to have anything to do with them because their relatives would send them somewhere from

which there is no returning.” Yeah, see above where being gay in Chechnya can get you killed either by law enforcement or by your own family. News reports have indicated that honor killings are unofficially sanctioned in Chechnya in that they don’t exactly get thorough investigations by law enforcement. The Guardian quotes Kheda Saratova, who serves on Kadyrov’s human rights council, as saying to a Russian radio station, “In our Chechen society, any person who respects our traditions and culture will hunt down this kind of person without any help from authorities, and do everything to make sure that this kind of person does not exist in our society.” In other words, Kadyrov’s human rights council doesn’t consider LGBT people human. Kadyrov has strong ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, so make no mistake that this anti-gay pogrom is likely fine by him. And of course Trump, who vowed to protect LGBTQ people from “hateful foreign ideologies,” is in bed with Putin (figuratively, not literally, unless there’s another salacious dossier that I haven’t heard about) and that so is Kadyrov. This story alone should be enough to lay bare the emptiness of any promise made by Trump to LGBTQ people. D’Anne Witkowski is a poet, writer and comedian living in Michigan with her wife and son. She has been writing about LGBT politics for over a decade. Follow her on Twitter @MamaDWitkowski.

NEED WOOD

IN A TOP/BOTTOM

STATE OF MIND I’ By Woody Miller

m an Italian guy living in a big city. I’ve been involved with a younger guy for a year and our relationship has gone to a level I’ve never experienced before. I’ve always been the one to top him, sexually, but now that I’ve completely fallen in love with him I want to feel him inside me. Unfortunately, my boyfriend is a total bottom. I’m convinced that this whole top/ bottom thing is just a state of mind, a psychological orientation, more than some chronic physical wiring. I think our sex life would be more complete and satisfactory if there was some reciprocity, some versatility in it. Do you think roles in bed can be reversed? How can I make my boyfriend top me? Your kind advice would be appreciated. -- Switch-hitting hopeful

 Dear Switch-hitting: “Kind”advice? You wrote Woody for “kind” advice? That’s like writing the Tea Party for a reasonable compromise. Good luck. Of course it’s possible to reverse sexual roles. You just have to ask nicely. My last

relationship was getting a little stale so one night I asked my boyfriend if he minded swapping positions for the night. “That’s a good idea,” he said. “You stand by the ironing board while I sit on the sofa and fart!” The bastard. And then he wonders why we broke up. Anyway, yes, it’s possible to get your boyfriend to switch things up. Here’s how: Talk to him, but never in bed. Bed is the WORST place to talk about sex. Too much pressure. Always talk when you have your clothes on outside the bedroom. That way shame and defensiveness are minimized. Here’s what you say: “Honey, I want to get closer to you. I want you to feel what I feel when I make love to you. And I want to feel what you feel when I make to love you. I want to take our love to a higher level.” And then present him with a tiny giftwrapped box. He’ll open it and ind a blue sapphire in it. You know, the kind Pizer makes. Viagra, the quicker pecker upper, is a wonderful way to take the pressure off him and put his d!ck inside you. Make sure the box has TWO little blue pills; one for you, one for him. Why? By taking it together, you’re re-framing it as an adventure that you’ll share rather than a demand that he perform. This way you can share the experience together, make it playful and take the pressure out of it.
