JULIA SCOTTI'S
transition was no laughing matter

T
he gray-haired old lady made her way to center stage as the crowd of over 2500 attending the filming of America's Got Talent in Pasadena, California's historic civic auditorium politely applauded expectantly. What happened in those next couple of minutes last March to Julia Scotti would propel the former middle-school English language arts teacher into public consciousness and validate her life-long held dream of being a recognized stand-up comedienne on the national stage. Comedy wasn't the only element on that stage that night, she said. She made a decision to answer a question from one of the AGT celebrity judges, Howie Mandel, that she knew was going to be life altering.
“Oh my God, you are a joy,” Mandel asked her before adding, “You have so much to offer… can I ask you a question? Why did you start so late in life?” She hesitated before answering with the one line that stood out, as she related that from her earlier career in comedy she was known as Rick Scotti, a revelation that brought cheers and applause from both the judges and the audience. There had been a natural hesitation to come out on national television given the context of how the LGBT community, especially the transgender community, has been perceived in some segments of society, she explained. But, she said, she fully intended to say something. It was though this Continued on page 24 Hotspots.LGBT | 21

moment was built on everything that had occurred previously in her life. Since that eventful evening, Julia Scotti has rapidly filled her schedule with engagements and shows. The YouTube videos of that first appearance have altogether garnered nearly 4.3 million views so far and her fan base is rapidly expanding. These days, a year later, finds her happily gigging from Florida to the northeast, around her native New Jersey, as well as the metropolitan tri-state New York City area. What hasn't changed, is her personality and the essence of who she is and where she came from -- albeit with a slight bit of a unique twist in her story. “I think I was around five and back then we'd watch The Ed Sullivan Show on CBS every Sunday night, and I'd wait to see the comedians -- I'd skip the opera singers, the bands, the other performers, but when the comics came on? I knew that was for me.” “I knew, well let me say that there was something in the back of my mind, I couldn't exactly put a finger on it, but I knew from an early age I was different. I sucked at being boy… wasn't any good at it. Later on, I felt I wasn't any good at being a man either.” Growing up in Fairview, North Jersey -Catholic and Italian-American to boot -- you just would not have thought about coming out, she said. The hilarious stand-up comedy acts of Richard Pryor, Rodney Dangerfield, George Carlin and, from an early age, Lou Costello in particular, were her inspirations and her motivation. It was her escape from the pain of dealing with a home-life dominated by an alcoholic father and an abusive mother. Her 'come-to-Jesus-moment' occurred on May 31, 1980 when, at age 28, she wandered into an open mic event at the Jade Fountain restaurant in Paramus, New Jersey. The audience reacted well and from that point as Rick Scotti, she would spend the next 20 years as a working comedian. She remembered working the room one night at Budd Friedman's Improv in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York City, when famed stand-up comic Rodney Dangerfield, also a 'Jersey boy' wandered in. “I sold him a joke for $50 which was a pretty big deal. He'd come in to watch the younger comics do their shtick with these 3 by 5 cards, 24 | Hotspots.LGBT
writing their jokes down, and then he'd flip through them. You knew which ones he disliked; they'd end up getting tossed on the floor.” Along the way, she related, she had gotten older, many of her friends and peers from the comedy circuit around the tri-state and northeast had gone on to fame and recognition and she felt as though her career was languishing and getting a “shot at the brass ring” wasn't going to happen. At the time, she was married with kids and felt the need to go 'legit' to support her family, so she left comedy and at age 48 went back to college to finish her degree and work as a middle school English language arts teacher. That morphed into an 11-year break from comedy. During that same time, she said, it was her wife who pinned the exact cause of what had been her life-long discomfiture with herself. “My ex-wife, she's a therapist, she said to me that my problem was that I was a woman inside trying to break free. I felt like a blackness in my chest lifted and suddenly things fell into place for me.”
Rick Scotti The road to transitioning into her authentic self did come at a cost, as it resulted in immediate non-acceptance and a lengthy separation from her family, her kids and the struggles in her newly found sense of who and where she was as a person. After her surgery came the friction with society's conventions that didn't have a buffer nor allowances for being a transgender person. “When I transitioned, I was not allowed to change my birth certificate until I offered proof of surgery, even though I was living as Julia. It was the most stressful year of my life. When you consider that all a state has to do to legally change one's birth certificate is eliminate either the "F" or the "M" and replace it with its opposite, the idea of the gender legitimacy is

Capt. Sandy delivers top notch service ON ‘BELOW DECK MEDITERRANEAN’
B
ravo channel addicts, like myself, were happy to see Below Deck Mediterranean come back for a second season with an almost all-new cast, including captain Sandy Yawn. With over 27 years' yachting experience, Capt. Sandy has commanded yachts from the Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf. One of only a handful of female captains in the yachting industry, she has overcome the stereotype and conquered every imaginable obstacle at sea -- from being chased by pirates to containing major fires on board. This undeniable resilience has helped tremendously in pushing her to the top of the industry.
58 | Hotspots.LGBT
Sandy's guests always come first and she will do everything in her power to satisfy their every need. She expects perfection from her crew and demands seven-star service. She's a proud supporter of the Jacksonville School for Autism and is involved in many other organizations focused on helping children. It was a pleasure to sit down with this Floridian, who is a proud member of the LGBT community, for this Hotspots exclusive interview:
Do you remember the first time you were on a boat and the first time you were on a yacht? I don't, but I know that it was a sailing yacht. I was meant to wash, polish and clean
the teak. It was hard work, but I loved it because it was outside on the water. I grew up on boats, we fished, water skied and played pos the water every weekend. My mom and dad loved to fish!
At what age did you realize you wanted to be a captain? I was working on a boat and the job was to get the boat ready. That meant clean the interior and wash the exterior. I worked all positions except the captain position! I thought, 'all he does is drive the boat, I can do that!' I always knew I could inspire and lead people and wanted that job.
How does it feel to be one of only a handful of captains that are female? It feels great to be a captain and at the same time very disproportionate! We need more females on deck. But I love being a trendsetter and pioneer and an example for women. We can achieve whatever we set our minds and hearts to do.
What has been your favorite charter of all time? I had a one month charter departing from Antibes (a resort town between Cannes and Nice on the French Riviera) traveling to Venice Italy, Croatia with a final destination of Greece.
What is the oddest thing that has happened on a charter? Some things we just can't speak of, we are like the three monkeys: “See no evil, speak no evil and hear no evil!” What happens at sea stays at sea, but with that said once we had a client who wanted my crew to join him in his cabin!
How did it feel to get cast on Below Deck Mediterranean? I was a little worried at first because I take my job, reputation and career seriously and was worried my colleagues and peers in the business would think I sold out to Hollywood. I quickly realized that I just needed to do my job with cameras, and that television is an amazing platform for me to inspire and empower women.
Why do you think you have been so successful as a captain? I am a team player, I treat crew like people. I was once a crew member and worked my way from the bilge to the bridge. Most crew today start as a junior on deck or in the interior and don't get the benefit I did working with one owner doing all the jobs. I know what it takes and always look at the big picture. Today, I have the experience and wisdom and have pretty much seen and done it all. I also believe I have an aura of calm and control that makes people feel safe.
What would people be surprised to know about you? On my days off I go boating! And I may be a bad-ass but also have a loving, soft side that people don't see.
What's ahead for Captain Sandy?
“I always knew I could inspire and lead people...”
Wow, I have no idea! I just live one day at a time and roll where life sends me! I'm living one day at a time, with a lot of gratitude, and am very excited for the future.
Below Deck Mediterranean airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.

NEWSWATCH TRANS WOMAN SUES CROSSFIT Told to compete as a man A transgender female athlete in California is suing the CrossFit corporation for $2.5 million for not allowing her to compete in the CrossFit Games as a woman. Chloie Jonsson, who is a personal trainer, is suing the CrossFit organization with discrimination, intentional infliction of emotional distress and unfair competition in a lawsuit filed in Santa Cruz, California. CNN reports Jonsson, who had sexual reassignment surgery in 2006, has been on female hormone therapy and is legally recognized in California as a woman, filed the lawsuit after CrossFit told her she should compete as a male. “The fundamental, ineluctable fact is that a male competitor who has a sex reassignment procedure still has a genetic makeup that confers a physical and physiological advantage over women,” according to correspondence from CrossFit’s legal counsel. Jonsson’s attorney blasted that decision, pointing out that her client has been on estrogen for a long time which nullifies the effects of testosterone to reduce masculine features of the body. The International Olympic Committee allows transgender athletes to compete in their identified gender after undergoing sexual reassignment surgery.

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO WHEN STRAIGHT DUDES DRINK, GAY SEX HAPPENS The more alcohol heterosexual men consume, the more interested in gay sex they become. That’s the surprising finding of a new study published in The Journal of Social Psychology. The research involved showing the men 40second videos of either a physically attractive man or woman drinking at a bar and chatting with the bartender. Not surprisingly, the men were more interested when the video featured a woman, but the more the men drank, the more interested they became in the male videos. “While guys who had nothing to drink reported next to no interest in getting it on with a dude, guys who said they’d had more than 10 drinks expressed almost as much interest in the man as they did in the woman,” according to a report by InstinctMagazine.com.
ATLANTA SHERIFF CAUGHT WITH HIS PANTS DOWN
A Georgia sheriff has been arrested after a foot chase through an Atlanta park “known for sexual acts after dark.” DeKalkb County Sheriff Jeffrey Mann, 54, faces charges of indecency and obstruction after a police officer, who positioned himself behind a tree to hide the reflective stripe on his uniform, observed the sheriff walking towards him exposing his genitals and masturbating. A foot chase ensued through the park before Mann gave up. He had two condoms in his pocket.

MURDER DEFENDANT WANTS FLORIDA JURY TO SEE HIS PENIS 4Claims his girlfriend choked to death during oral sex
A 65-year-old Margate, Florida man accused of the murder of his girlfriend claims she accidentally choked to death while performing oral sex on his large penis. The defendant, Richard Henry Patterson, is seeking the judge’s permission to show his penis to the jury so they can better understand how his girlfriend, aged 60, could have choked. His attorney, Ken Padowitz, argued the request “is material and relevant. The view [of his penis] by the jury is essential for them to fully understand …the defense in this case.”
YOUR FRIENDS AREN’T REALLY YOUR FRIENDS
New scientific research has revealed that most of us are bad at choosing our friends and, worse, fully half the people we think are our friends don’t share that reciprocal view. The research, published in the scientific journal Plos One, interviewed 600 students in Israel, the United States and Europe. “It turns out that we’re very bad at judging who our friends are,” said Dr. Erez Shmueli, one of the study’s authors. “If you think someone is your friend, you expect him to feel the same way. But in fact, that’s not the case,” as only half of your “friends” consider you a friend. Hotspots.LGBT | 101
ERICK ERICKSON BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI
Asked by a group of high schoolers to share his thoughts about the LGBTQ community, Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming) said something stupid. “I know a guy who wears a tutu and goes to bars on Friday night,” Enzi said, “and is always surprised that he gets in fights. Well, he kind of asks for it.” So many problems with his statement. First, does he really “know a guy” who
104 | Hotspots.LGBT
wears a tutu to bars every Friday? That seems oddly specific. And why did Enzi’s brain immediately go to “guy in tutu” when reaching for an example of a gay man? Also, does a guy wearing a tutu ask to get punched just a like a woman wearing [fill in the blank with literally any item of clothing you can think of] deserve to get raped? Enzi has since apologized to anyone who was offended, but conservative
If a guy walks into a bar in Wyoming wearing a tutu, he’s probably going to get punched […] and yes, the dude wearing the tutu shoulders some of the responsibility. He should have known better. commentator Erick Erickson was quick to come to Enzi’s defense. Erickson wrote on his blog The Resurgent, “If a guy walks into a bar in Wyoming wearing a tutu, he’s probably going to get punched […] and yes, the dude wearing the tutu shoulders some of the responsibility. He should have known better.” Erickson, who refers to the LGBTQ community as the BLT&GQ community (get it? It’s a sandwich and a magazine. It is a very hilarious joke), writes that he’s “not condoning violence or even endorsing it. It’s just the reality of our world.” But condoning violence is exactly what he’s doing. He’s saying men in tutus (a.k.a. homos) will get punched because men who don’t wear tutus (a.k.a. heteros) are driven to uncontrollable rage by such a sight and there’s nothing anyone can do so we must accept it. “I’m really damn tired of all the people running around making other people extremely uncomfortable then screaming about their rights and privileges when called out,” Erickson writes. “If you want to go around making people uncomfortable, you’ve got the problem, not the rest of us.” Actually, if you respond to being “uncomfortable” by balling your fist and smashing it into someone’s face, you definitely have a problem. That’s not normal. It’s demeaning to claim that men inherently lack self-control or the ability to choose any response to discomfort other than violence. Erickson has a message for “liberals in their coastal bubbles.” “We are a culturally heterogeneous nation with diverse cultural norms,” he writes. “If a
guy walks into a bar in Wyoming wearing make-up and a tutu, he’s probably going to be asked to leave, if not picked on or punched. If you don’t like that, don’t go to a bar in Wyoming wearing a tutu.” This is, of course, easier said than done. Because gay men don’t really run around in tutus, but men who are perceived as gay have a much greater chance of being beaten or killed. Women who are perceived as transgender even more so. LGBTQ people have gained much visibility and that visibility has translated into some important legal and civil rights victories. But it also comes at a price. A price that Enzi and Erickson cheapen when they dismissively talk of “tutus.” Erickson may believe that staying safe is as simple as never leaving your house or living openly about who you are. But I doubt that’s a restriction he would stand for in his own life. D’Anne Witkowski is a poet, writer and comedian living in Michigan with her wife and son. NEED WOOD By Woody Miller
SEX
A GOOD WORKOUT?
H
ey Woody! How many calories do you burn f--king? I’m thinking if it’s high enough, wouldn’t promiscuity be a better way of getting fit than going to the gym? Besides, I’d love to be able to say, “I’m not a wh-re; I’m an athlete.” In all seriousness, if I can f--k the fat off, why would I try to try to jog it off? -- Aspiring Sl-t
y If you pick sexercising over exercising, you can maximize the calorie burn by picking the right activity. Here’s a helpful chart:
UNZIPPING PANTS Using two calm hands: 4 calories Using one trembling hand: 10 calories GETTING INTO BED Lifting partner: 5 calories Dragging partner along floor: 100 calories
Hey Woody! I’m 36 and have been single for four years now. I went through a very hard time in a previous breakup and unfortunately it caused major insecurities that caused me to push away a wonderful man I was dating. I acted stupid and have apologized over and over again. But, Mr. Man will not give me the time of the day now. What else can I do to tell him how sorry I am and how much I miss him without acting like a desperate fool? --- One sorry b-st-rd Dear Sorry, You didn’t tell me what you did so it’s hard to give specifics. After all, the repair factor is directly related to the severity of what you did. So, if you f--ked his best friend behind his back (and really, where else could you f--k him?), forgiveness would be difficult but achievable. On the other hand, if you used his moisturizers without asking, you might as well fall on your sword because there ain’t a gay jury alive that would hand down a forgiveness decision. Send him a beautiful card and acknowledge, with legible handwriting please, that the hardest part of seeing a potential love affair die is knowing that the wound was self-inflicted. Tell him you understand his need for some time and space to process what’s happened and that you’ll honor it by keeping your distance. In other words, leave it where Jesus flung it. Send him flowers about a month afterwards. If that doesn’t work, kiss your fantasy goodbye.

Dear Aspiring: You’re as wrong as pumps at a leather bar. Do the math and you’ll see what I mean. Let’s say you weigh 160 pounds. You’d burn 18 calories while engaging in 10 minutes of foreplay and 102 calories with 20 minutes of intercourse (a ridiculous figure since most guys last an average of 5 minutes when they’re topping). Even, so compare how many calories you’d burn: 30 minutes of sex: 120 calories 30 minutes of running: 307 calories 30 minutes of aerobics: 254 30 minutes of weightlifting: 220
PUTTING ON CONDOM With experience: 4 calories Without experience: 60 calories With erection: 2 calories Without erection: 200 calories ORGASM Real: 35 calories Faked: 150 calories ORGASMIC INTENSITY SCALE Facial expression didn’t change: 1 calorie Shoes flew off: 100 calories
