RE-CAP EPISODE 9

by Scott Holland

T

his week there was only a Maxi challenge, but it was a big one. In teams, the queens were challenged to create, write and star in their own TV pilot. They had to develop concepts, characters and stories for a new hit series. The teams were Sasha and Shea; Valentina and Nina; and Peppermint, Trinity and Alexis. The runway theme was Club Kid. In the end the best team was Sasha and Shea and they both won. Peppermint and Trinity were safe and Alexis was saved. The bottom two were Nina and Valentina. Unfortunately, Valentina didn't know the words to her song (see below) and sashayed away.

46 | Hotspots.LGBT

Q: At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name? A: Drag became an interest when I went to my first drag show at the age of 21. My first time in drag was when I was 23 for Halloween, but I didn't become a drag performer until 10 months before the show. I waited for the perfect name and when it came to me, I just knew it. Q: How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul's Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you got chosen? A: Just one time, and I felt so lucky and very happy. I felt like it was finally my moment to be discovered for my talent and my creativity.

Q: Is there additional pressure now that RuPaul has been on for eight seasons and two all-star seasons? A: There is! I was 17 when the show came out and I have been watching from the beginning. The judges and the audience definitely have higher standards. Q: Tell us about your RuPaul's Drag Race experience? A: It was magical, but it all happened so fast. It was so amazing for me, as I won challenges, had great runways and made an impact. It was a dream come true. The most beautiful thing I am taking away from this experience is that I met RuPaul. Q: Tell us about the final lip synch‌ what happened? A: I was not prepared with the lip synch, I didn't know the song, I was also in a state of shock where I lost control, and didn't feel anything.

Q: Who do you want to win? A: It's not really about winning. If I was sitting at home watching, I would be very intrigued with everything that Nina Bonina does. Q: Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you? A: I am actually a very emotional and sensitive person. Q: What's ahead for Valentina? A: This is just the beginning of what I hope to be a very long and successful career. I want to become the face of drag in Latin America. For more information on Valentina, go to Facebook.com/AllAboutValentina or Instagram.com/AllAboutValentina

New fashion line is handmade, comfortable and appealing

W

George Corando

hen most of us South Floridians in the nightclub industry hear the name George Coronado, we think of Give Me A Beat Productions, which was George's Production company for almost 10 years. George and his business partner, Arnold Matteson, created GMAB and upon Arnold's passing it was George's mission to make the company even better than it had been. From circuit parties to fashion shows to charity events, GMAB was involved with our community. About two years ago, George decided to take a break from producing events and move back to Peru where he started a fashion business. It was so great to sit down with George for this Hotspots exclusive interview.

By Scott Holland

What made you move back to Peru? I lived in Miami Beach for 14 years. I had a successful business and everything was great. However, I had other goals in life that I wanted to pursue. I am the kind of person that is not afraid to go after my goals and to step out of my comfort zone. My family played an important role in my decision to move to South America. I have a beautiful family and used to visit them once or twice a year. However, I left home when I was 17 years old and never really got to live close to them during my adulthood. Miami is an awesome place, but I felt that it was time for me to relocate and to start a new business, pursue a new challenge, keep growing up as a professional and as an individual and to add new experiences to my life. Two years later, I know I made the right decision. I am very happy with my new life in Lima, Peru.

After so many years in the event planning business, why did you decide to get into fashion? I've always been very interested in the fashion industry. I worked successfully with fashion projects with my Miami company, Give Me A Beat Productions, so it was not all new to me. Designing clothing is a talent that I strongly believe I have. Peru is a great country to start a clothing line. Its cotton is world-renowned and high quality. Many important American and European brands manufacture their productions in Peru. Peruvian production is export quality as we have the best of the best

in fabrics and workshops. I considered a few businesses and after taking the time to evaluate the possibilities, I decided to create Coronado & Carozzi, along with my business partner Mario Carozzi. Mario is a long-time and successful entrepreneur, very talented and respected. We have an amazing friendship and working relationship.

Your clothing is all handmade‌how would you describe your clothing line? Correct, our clothing is handmade using the finest local cotton. We are the brand where uniqueness gets in line with

Coronado & Carozzi is different because a lot of my inspiration as a designer comes from exploring different cultures and my travels around the world. I have had the privilege to visit exotic spots, which not many people have the opportunity to experience. Also, I describe my clothing line as “chameleonic. In today's world, business keep us really busy especially in the big metropolis such as New York, London, Madrid, Buenos Aires, Sydney, Lima, etc. We work all day and have busy schedules. We are interested that the lifestyle we propose make us look good for our various daily activities: work, meetings with clients, lunch with friends, a cocktail party at night, the movies, dinner, a date, etc. We do not have time to change outfits during the day so looking chic and appropriate is fundamental.

What does the future hold for Coronado & Carozzi? After our success in Peru, our next goal is to position our clothing line in the United States. Our designs are perfectly suited for markets such as Florida and California, because of the weather and our point of view. We have a Fall/Winter 2017 collection,

craftsmanship. We are known for our modern and vibrant designs. We spell different, we are different and we know how to design clothing that makes a difference. We, as a brand, aim to prioritize high quality, comfort and appeal.

Do you have a design team or who comes up with the designs? I design everything we have in our line. Of course, we do have a team that works for us in production, marketing, quality assurance, distribution and sales. Needless to say, everything is under my supervision and my business partner's.

What fabrics do you use? We use high quality fabrics -- from cotton, terry cotton, leather, drill, acrylic fiber, nylon, silk, etc -- it depends on each design. We have a complete line, from jackets, jeans, joggers, shorts, shirts, tshirts, tank-tops, underwear, swimwear, hats, accessories and so forth.

What makes your line different from your competition?

which has a retro vibe but fresh and somehow futuristic yet keeping it ready-towear and elegant. Our last year's collection was a big success and I feel this new collection will be even better. We are working very hard and feel very proud.

A: Lee – Bruce Townsend, the vice president of the International Association of Gay/Lesbian Country Western Dance Clubs, who lives in Miami, was very involved with the bidding for the World Outgames and he approached me and asked for others and I recommended Scott. Scott – Since we are both industry professionals for decades we love organizing and put together events, so it was right up our alley. We love organizing the sport that we love and supporting the same-sex dance world. Q: How does someone get to see the dance competitions? Meanwhile, The Equality March for Unity and Pride in Washington, D.C., on June 11 is expected to draw tens of thousands of participants from all over the country. CHELSEA’S OUT! TRANSGENDER SOLDIER RELEASED FROM PRISON

P

vt. Chelsea Manning, 29, the transgender soldier who was sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking thousands of secret documents to WikiLeaks, was released from the all-male Fort Leavenworth prison in Kansas on May 17 after serving only seven years. She entered prison as a man named Bradley Manning and announced she was transgender a day later. Manning became the first person in military prison to be allowed to take hormones. Her sentence was commuted by President Barack Obama as one of his final acts in office. President Donald Trump called Manning an “ungrateful traitor” shortly after he took office.

TORTURE IN INDONESIA? Two young gay men have been sentenced by a sharia court in Indonesia to a public caning of 85 lashes each for having sex. The men, aged 20 and 23, were arrested after vigilantes in the conservative provincial capital, Banda Aceh, broke into their rented accommodations to catch them having sex. According to a report by TheGuardian.com, the lead judge said the three-judge panel decided against the maximum penalty of 100 lashes because the men were polite, had no prior convictions and cooperated with authorities. “As Muslims, the defendants should uphold the sharia law that prevails in Aceh,” the lead judge said. International human rights groups are protesting the sentence which they believe constitute torture under international law.

(GAY) GENTLEMEN PREFER... BEARDS!

B

oth heterosexual women and gay men prefer men with facial hair over clean-shaven men. That’s the finding of new research which analyzed the sexual attractiveness of men with varying lengths of facial hair for both groups. It turns out women are most attracted to men with light stubble for a one-night stand, but prefer a full beard when choosing a longterm mate. Meanwhile, gay men are even more attracted to facial hair, according to the study by the University of Queens

land in Australia which polled more than 1,500 men and women. “Homosexual men preferred hairier stimuli than heterosexual women, supporting past findings that homosexual men have strong preferences for masculine traits,” according to the study.

PROTEST

Vice President Mike Pence

NOTRE DAME GRADUATES WALK OUT ON MIKE PENCE Vice President Mike Pence’s appearance at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana to deliver the commencement address drew “throngs” of protestors and resulted in an estimated 150 graduates walking out on May 21, according to CNN. The group cited the vice president’s opposition to gay rights, his attempts as governor of Indiana to stop Syrian refugees from entering the state, his backing of President Trump’s travel ban on immigrants from seven majority-Muslin countries and his opposition to sanctuary cities that refuse to enforce federal immigration laws.

IN QUOTES...

“If [Donald Trump] took a dump on his desk you’d defend it.” – CNN host Anderson Cooper, during a live interview with political commentator and Trump supporter Jeffrey Lord. Cooper later apologized for the “crude” comment.

Total Relaxation

The benefits of massage therapy! By Tom Bonanti 108 | Hotspots.LGBT

Massage Therapy is a clinically proven effective treatment for stress and pain relief. Therapeutic massage is increasingly being recommended by doctors and other health care professionals as research continues to document that it is a powerful and cost effective way to bring healing and relief to myriads of populations of people.

HOT BODIES

HERE’S MY GUIDE TO MESSAGE THERAPY: oMassage is rubbing, stroking or kneading of

the soft issues of the body to reduce tension and pain. Therapists apply pressure with their hands, but they can also skillfully use their forearms, elbows or feet. There are over 80 different types of massage. Some are gentle, others are more intense. oThe most common, Swedish massage, is all about relaxation of sore, tired muscles. The therapist uses long, gliding strokes, rhythmic kneading and staccato tapping techniques

on the top layer of muscles in the direction of blood low to the heart. Range of motion stretches are also employed to move joints and improve lexibility. oDeep tissue massage is more rigorous. It is often used by a therapist especially skilled in deep tissue therapeutic techniques to treat chronic muscle tension. Therapists apply deeper, slower, more intense strokes to reach and release knotted, ischemic muscles using ingers, knuckles and elbows. oSpas often combine Swedish massage with heated stones or aromatherapy from essential oils to make the massage experience even more sumptuous. Stone massage uses specially treated, smooth rocks which are heated and used in the session to ease soreness and soothe tired, knotted muscles. A few drops of essential oil in massage lotion can increase feelings of well being and relaxation, or bring about a sense of rejuvenation and invigoration. oAccording to The Florida State Massage Therapy Association (FSMTA), the oldest professional massage therapy association in the country, massage can improve a person’s health in the following ways: increases blood circulation; reduces heart rate and blood pressure; reduces stress and tension; relieves chronic and temporary pain; increases serotonin levels and acts against depression; relieves minor muscle strains and pain and increases athletic performance. oIf you’re in the market for a therapist, hire one who is knowledgeable and professional. An MA# after his/her name (for example, Tom Bonanti MA40288) assures you that the therapist is schooled, licensed, and up to date on all of the modern massage techniques. Our own Hotspots Magazine is a great place to begin your search for the best therapists in South Florida! uTom Bonanti is a personal trainer and licensed massage. and a half to two hours. The parade starts on the south end of Wilton Drive by Dairy Queen and continues north to Five Points.

Since the Pulse nightclub tragedy in Orlando last year, security at events like these has heightened. What are the challenges, and costs, to secure an LGBT event of this magnitude? A: The tragedy at Pulse and the ongoing threats LGBT events face around the nation and world has made security a top issue. This year, we have had to delay some expansion plans as we struggle to raise the additional money to cover security. The security costs that we are responsible for have doubled to over $40,000. Security is also a concern as we look at where items are placed, how we control access and what can be allowed to happen at the event. We will have police from numerous jurisdictions along with support from several federal police agencies on site securing the area, all under the leadership of our Wilton Manors Police Chief. As part of this, the City of Wilton Manors has stepped up and assisted in some of the costs and changes we face. Through city support we have changed all our entrances to heavy water barricades and have placed additional barricades throughout the event to help stop drive-throughs from happening. The City of Wilton Manors Police Department has done a great job of making sure we have a good, safe time. In addition, we have set up a GoFundMe page online to help diffuse the high cost of security.

ground in our struggle for full equality. We are part of the planning group of the local Equality Rally for Unity & Pride that will be held on June 11, starting at 4 p.m., at Fort Lauderdale’s Huizenga Park, 32 E. Las Olas Blvd. We consider it our kick-off event for Stonewall Week. We encourage everyone to attend to show our solidarity and send a message to local and national politicians that we will not quietly allow our rights and the rights of other marginalized groups – to be taken away.

How can people participate in Stonewall Pride 2017 if they would like to volunteer, enter the float parade or purchase a booth, for example? A: We are still open for sponsors, vendors, parade entries, volunteers and financial support. If someone wants to be part of this event they can go to wiltonmanorstonewall.com and click on the appropriate link. They can also reach out to us at 754-200-2979 or info@wmeg.org.

“The tragedy at Pulse and the ongoing threats LGBT events face around the nation and world has made security a top issue...”

The anti-LGBT demeanor of the Trump administration has led to a new level of LGBT activism, including scheduled “Equality Rally” events at more than three dozen cities across the nation (and worldwide) on June 11. Are you expecting, or hoping for, larger crowds than usual? A: It is a rough time for our nation as we face constant attacks against marginalized groups. We’ve seen an increase in attendance and interest in last year’s event due to solidarity from the Orlando Pulse nightclub tragedy. We anticipate that this year we will again see that support and increased attendance, as those who thought our fight was done or moving forward are now seeing the need to fight again to keep what we have already gained, and not lose any more

3

5

What is your hope for Stonewall Pride 2017? A: This year we have several goals as we are looking forward. One is an increased attendance as we take an event of 30,000 and over the next several years move it to 50,000+. The second is, with the help of the city, to successfully measure the economic impact of the event to meet all the requirements for several grants. We are looking to grow the event by bringing back a huge headliner to showcase and expand the offerings of the event to meet our attendance goals. Finally, and most important of all, everyone has a fun and safe time where they feel free to express who they are and, hopefully, we have encouraged everyone to become more involved in our struggle for equality. 4 To contribute to the cost of security for the event, go to Gofundme.com/wilton-manors-stonewall-security. vodka, modelos guapos y otras cosas que guardo en el sótano |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Tal vez realmente me gusta estar desnudo.

¡Salud!

Vodka, Underwear Models and Other Things I Keep in my Basement Hello fellow readers! Well, it seems another summer is here! I hope you all worked hard on those beach bodies you were supposed to have by now. I worked really hard to get my summer body and all it took was a few glasses of Vodka, a $5,000 check and the promise of a Paris vacation. And that's how I got t h i s A n d re w C h r i s t i a n underwear model trapped in my basement. What? Isn't that how you get a beach body for the summer? Unless you were expecting me to tell you about the diet I went on and the hundreds of hours spent at a gym trying to get muscular for the summer in which case, I'd have to remind you not to mix alcohol with pain killers unless you don't mind having hallucinations of Donald Trump knocking on your door while sitting on a Unicorn or me lifting anything more than a 2.5 pound bowl of cereal in the morning. I shouldn't have to worry too much about sweating so much during the summer to lose weight and, excuse me for sounding so conceited, 124 | Hotspots.LGBT

but I am SO hot! I don't mean that in the way my underwear model guest in my basement would say it. I mean it's hotter than Santa Claus' crotch while walking the Sahara for 2 days straight. People keep asking me to come up with things they can do during the summertime, but I cannot think of anything else that does not involve me laying naked inside a hot tub filled with a million ice cubes or bathing naked on the beach or walking around the house n a ke d o r w a l k i n g … t h e dog…naked…? Hey…maybe I

Anyway…what were we talking about? Oh yeah! Father's Day! I wish I could have the time to spend it with my own father, but he stepped out to get cigarettes. He said he'll be back by 4:00PM. It is 4:15PM now so that makes him about12 to 15 years late! That store must be REALLY far away! Sometimes I get paternal myself so I adopted a puppy dog for when those things happen. I already taught him how to sit and bark on command. Next week, I am going to teach him how to do

just really like being naked. That would explain why I always make roommates so uncomfortable or people at church. Nah! That could not be the reason. I'm sure it's all those silly hats I wear and get all those church ladies jealous of my fabulous look. I hope you all had a great Mother's Day in the company of your mothers, aunts, friends or that crazy lady on the streets who keeps confusing me with her son. Jeez lady! Your photos of me as a child and you holding my birth certificate or your strange resemblance to me will do nothing! Better try harder next time and no, I don't have bad memory so stop saying that I do.

the dishes and take out the garbage. The real reason why I got him was to act as a guard dog to do simple things such as protecting myself from unwanted intruder s or making sure under wear models trapped in the basement don't escape. I'll get to those things in a minute, in the meantime, I hope you have a Happy Father's Day, Happy Gay Days at Disney World, Happy Summertime an d Happy Dirkmaticoulenshabby Day! It's just a day I created when I run out of reasons to drink and celebrate just about anything I want. Happy Dirkmaticoulenshabby Day, everyone! Cheers!

NEED WOOD

THIS GUY HAS A

BEEF WITH ME! By Woody Miller

H

ey Woody, You anorexic son of a b-tch. How dare you describe sex between overweight people as “lard-a-sex?” Your advice to your “truly tubby readers” was the kind of hateful and disreputable intolerance we expect out of Rush Limbaugh. You think you’re funny, but you’re actually just a sorry excuse for a queer. You think you’ve overcome so much but in your attitudes you haven’t achieved anything toward becoming a decent human being. My suggestion to your editors is to have you attend a club party in a 250-pound fat suit. Take a walk in someone else’s chub before you fling the insults. I’m part of the Fat Liberation Movement and proud of it. Why don’t you just accept that people come in all sizes and that one isn’t better than the other? - Tired of your s--t

y

Dear Tired, Christ, here we go again--another hand wringing, bed-wetting crybaby who can’t stand to be poked fun at. First of all, let me say this to ALL my readers, not just the porky ones: If you’re looking for warmth and compassion you’ve got the wrong column. Try Chicken Soup for the C-ck. It’s three aisles over. As for you, Mr. Walking Heart Attacks Have Rights Too, you’re treating fat as if it were a moral issue instead of a health crisis. I’m not buying it. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 62% of us are overweight or obese. In some people, obesity can be explained

by genetic abnormalities. But that’s just not true for most. If it were, then why did the Centers for Disease Control report that obesity among adults increased almost 60% since 1991? What, was there a white sale on genetic mutations and God couldn’t keep the shelves stocked? That obesity in the United States is a serious public health threat to millions of Americans is not my opinion. It’s the CDC’s. They went so far as to describe obesity as “epidemic” and that we need to respond to it “as vigorously as we do to an infectious disease.” By the way, obesity is defined as being at least 30 pounds over your ideal weight. Overweight and physical inactivity account for more than 300,000 premature deaths each year in the U.S., second only to tobacco-related deaths. Obesity and overweight are also linked to heart disease, diabetes and other chronic conditions. Fat Liberation, my a--. What am I supposed to say to the people I love who happen to be overweight? “Here, dear, have another rack of ribs. You’re liberated, you know.” I stand by my previous advice: If your obesity isn’t genetic and you are having problems touching your partner’s genitals because your stomach is in the way, the answer isn’t to try different positions, it’s to lose the weight. My heart really does go out to people struggling with their weight. The method is simple (eat less, exercise more) but the process is not. Depression, anxiety, eating disorders, body image issues, society’s conspiracy (why don’t we have fast-food fruit?), all contribute to the difficulty in losing weight. Should I be more compassionate? I already am. You just don’t see it. In life, I pat hands; in print I kick a--.
