EQUALITY 2017 FROM THE PUBLISHER
FACING OUR CHALLENGES
W
By PETER CLARK
“
When we replace complacency with action, we win.
elcome to the first annual Equality Edition of Hotspots. As June is equality month, there is no better time than now to reflect on just how far our community has come since the Stonewall uprising back in June of 1969. As you read through this issue, you will realize how significant the many milestones have been along the way. I have often said that complacency can be our worst enemy and if brave gay men and women had not stood up to the indignity and brutality that faced them, we would not be where we are today. As you read though Hotspots’ Peter Jackson’s feature entitled, “The Fight Ahead,” you will realize that there is much more to do and I call on all Americans to stand with their LGBTQ brothers and sisters and hold firm on our continuing fight for equality. I hope that you will be inspired by Richard Hack’s article, “How Corporate America is Stepping Up” with more than 500 major companies scoring a perfect 100 in the 2017 Corporate Equality Index. This, as the executive branch in DC conspires to claw back our rights as we speak. I also hope you will read Brett Yancey’s touching interview with Christine Leininen, entitled “One Mother’s Story.” Christine talks frankly about losing her son and his partner in the Pulse massacre
in Orlando, just two of the 49 lives wiped out in the deadliest mass shooting to date in America’s history. Where do we go from here? The answer is simple: Rise up for those who came before us to defend our human rights. Rise up for those who lost their lives at Pulse Nightclub just a year ago this week. 4 Complacency can erode progress like acid on metal. 4Complacency cost us an election and gave us Donald Trump. 4Complacency almost cost Miami the World Out Games. When we replace complacency with action, we win. Just ask the survivors of Stonewall and Pulse or speak to the hundreds of athletes who descended on Miami in the past few weeks who fought back ineptitude and possibly corruption and came together in celebration of the human spirit. What have we learned? We are not measured by the challenges we face but rather, how we face the challenges.

lgbt AMERICA UNDER TRUMP:
THE FIGHT AHEAD
W
By PETER JACKSON
e gave him the benefit of the doubt when he declared at the 2016 Republican National Convention last July, “As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect LGBT citizens.” Four months later, we had reason to be hopeful when he borrowed a rainbow flag emblazoned with the words “LGBT for Trump” from a supporter and held it high at a rally in Greeley, Colorado, declaring he would be a friend to the LGBT community – the best ever! But as we’ve come to expect from Trump, there are often “alternative” facts. Today, any hope there might be advancement of equality and LGBT rights under his presidency has evaporated and turned instead to fear. The reality – which LGBT Americans must digest with a collective, sobering and urgent understanding – is that the Trump administration is pandering to the base that supported him and our expectation must be that things are going to get a lot, lot worse. The ultimate wish of the christian evangelical Trump base is to contain an estimated 14-16 million LGBTQ Americans and marginalize their existence. They want “religious freedom” legislation in order to discriminate legally. Summarily, they want to be able to sing to Jesus

EQUALITY 2017
21 IMPORTANT MILESTONES IN LGBT HISTORY 1969 The Stonewall Riots on June 27 began the LGBT rights movement as we know it today. Only two states, Illinois and Connecticut, had decriminalized homosexuality by 1969. For those people in the rest of the country, being caught in police raids at gay meeting places, such as bars, meant that you would be arrested and your name and address would be printed in the newspaper. From there, these people would usually be fired from their jobs and shunned by their families. Just five years before, Senator Charley Johns spearheaded a witch hunt against gays in Florida’s public universities: over 300 people were either fired from their jobs or kicked out of school. 1973 The American Psychiatric Association removes homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses. At this time, Gallup reports that only 12% believe that homosexuality is something people are born with. That number would rise to 42% by 2014. The largest attack against gay people in United States history occurred when an arsonist set the Upstairs Lounge, a gay bar in New Orleans, on fire. 32 people died. News coverage was scant, and what coverage did appear was not reported in an unbiased manner. 1977 Dade County, Florida becomes the first county in Florida to pass an anti-discrimination ordinance that specifically protects gay people. Anita Bryant, a singer and spokeswoman for Florida Orange Juice, leads the charge to have the ordinance repealed. Also, for a time, she succeeded in banning openly gay teachers from Florida public schools, and led a moveAnita Bryant ment to ban adoption by gay couples. Her political activism was a success but a boycott of Florida Orange Juice, led heavily by gays, caused her to lose her promotional contract with the brand. Also in 1977, Harvey Milk makes history by becoming the first openly gay elected official in the country, and he takes his seat on San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors. His assassination the next year sends shockwaves throughout the gay community nationwide. 1979 Over 100,000 people attend the first March on Washington for lesbian and gay rights. By this time, while being openly gay still carried a large stigma in many parts of the country, the gay rights movement has successfully moved from “coming out” and “fitting in” to working to fix discrimination and hostility against gay people by homophobes.

1981 AIDS (then called GRID) is first noticed among gay men in New York City and quickly becomes a national health issue. The Gay Men’s Health Crisis is founded in New York City. The mainstream media begins to cover AIDS but it isn’t until actor Rock Hudson’s death four years later that the topic becomes one of national importance. President Ronald Reagan famously did not utter the words “HIV” or “AIDS” until the seventh year of his eight years in the White House. 1986 Bowers v. Hardwick is decided by the Supreme Court, which rules that there is no constitutional right to sodomy. It upholds Georgia’s anti-sodomy law as well as the laws across many other states. 1987 Coverage of gay issues increases in local media but national news outlets still ignore many gay-related stories. The second March on Washington is held this year, with 200,000 people in attendance, and it is ignored by Time, Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report. 1990 President George Bush signs the Hate Crimes Statistics Act into law, mandating the federal government to keep track of crimes that relate to the victim’s sexual orientation. Many states, including California and Connecticut, pass laws that call for stronger sentences for anti-gay crimes. Seven states would pass gay rights legislation by 1992. 1993 The third March on Washington draws over a million participants, including Tipper Gore, wife of Vice-President Al Gore. The majority of national media outlets follow the march for Hotspots.LGBT | 17
the first time. Also this year, a movie about the AIDS crisis and its impact on a man and his loved ones, Philadelphia, is released in theaters. The lead actor, Tom Hanks, would win an Oscar for his performance. 1994 Hawaii becomes the first of many states to specifically write into their constitution that marriage should be between a man and a woman, after gay couples tried unsuccessfully to apply for marriage licenses there. 1996 President Bill Clinton signs the Defense of Marriage Act, which would bar states from having to recognize same-sex marriages in other states and also would bar married gay couples from receiving federal benefits as heterosexual couples do. The Supreme Court, in Romer v. Evans, overturned Colorado’s voter-approved amendment that would have banned gay rights ordinances locally or statewide. San Francisco opens the nation’s first domestic partnership registry for gay couples. 1997 Ellen DeGeneres comes out on her prime-time ABC sitcom, Ellen. A number of television stations immediately drop her show, and her coming out launches national debate. Originally, coming out hurt Ellen, and her profile was visibly reduced in popular culture for a few years, but she earned herself a decisive comeback when her talk show premiered in 2003 to rave reviews. She would eventually have the #1, Emmyaward winning daytime talk show. 1998 The death of Matthew Shepard outside Laramie, Wyoming causes the country to discuss anti-gay harassment and violence for the first time. A renewed push for hate crime legislation begins. 2000 Vermont becomes the first state to legalize civil unions, which has lots of the same rights as a marriage, but not all rights. The topic of same-sex marriage is discussed as a viable option nationwide for the first time. 2003 The Supreme Court knocks down Texas’s anti-sodomy law in the case of Lawrence v. Texas. Thirteen other states’ sodomy laws are similarly invalidated, including Florida’s. Homosexuality is decriminalized for the first time in Florida, with the age of consent set at 18, equal to that of heterosexuals. 2004 Massachusetts becomes the first state to legalize gay marriage. 18 | Hotspots.LGBT
2008 The California Supreme Court knocks down the state’s ban on gay marriage, and gay couples begin to wed. A voter initiative, Proposition 8, passes later that year, halting marriages in the state. Marriages would be reinstated in California for gay couples in 2013. 2011 For the very first time, Gallup records findings show a majority of Americans approve of gay marriage. 2013 The Defense of Marriage Act is found unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in the case of United States v. Windsor. Gay marriage is now legal in a handful of states and those couples will be allowed to file for federal benefits.
2014
Transgender rights and issues are being discussed by more people now than ever before. Laverne Cox makes history by becoming the first transgender woman to grace the cover of Time. 2015 In the case of Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court finds that the states’ bans on gay marriage are unconstitutional, and that marriage equality shall be the law of the land. By the time the court case was decided, 36 states had already legalized marriage equality, either through legislation or court cases. Couples in 14 states began to wed on June 26. 2016 49 innocent lives are lost at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida in the worst mass shooting in history. Hotspots encourages readers to learn more about LGBT history by supporting the Stonewall Museum and Archives and visiting their gallery on Wilton Drive in Fort Lauderdale. I refuse to let HIV get in the way of my busy schedule. I even have a cell phone app that reminds me to take my HIV meds. When I’m not working, I keep busy with boot camp, swimming, weight lifting, meditation, traveling and — oh yeah — karaoke. I know that the more control I have over my HIV, the less power I give to the virus. I take control by taking my HIV medication every day.

In Week 10, the Mini Challenge was the infamous “Bitch Fest with Puppets.” Why? Because everyone loves puppets. Sasha won the challenge. The Maxi Challenge was a “Ball…the Gayest Ball Ever,” where the girls have to work three looks: “Rainbow She Better Do,” “Sexy Unicorn,” and “Village People Eleganza Extravaganza.” In the end, Shea won the challenge with Sasha a close second, and Trinity was safe. The bottom two were Peppermint and Alexis, but Peppermint KILLED the lip sync challenge and Alexis sashayed away. Her exit interview: Q: At what age did drag become an

interest and how did you pick your name? A: I started dressing up in my mom's clothes when I was very young, but it tapered off as I grew up. It then resurfaced in middle and high school, and I started to pursue drag professionally in my first year of college. As for my name, I struggled finding a comical name that felt right. So, I decided to feminize my given name, and came up with Alexis Michelle. It is very indicative of what my drag style is. Q: How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul's Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you got chosen? A:This was my eighth time applying to be on
the show. When I found out I was cast, it was a wild, surreal, dream come true. It was very gratifying and throughout the process I had to constantly pinch myself and say, “Girl, it's happening! Q: Is there additional pressure on the contestants now that RuPaul has been on for 8 seasons and 2 all-star seasons? A:There is some pressure as the visibility of the show is now greater than ever. Q: Tell us about your RuPaul's Drag Race experience? A: It was a whirlwind and it flew by, but it also felt like I was there for a year. It was the hardest thing I have ever done, but also the most rewarding. It is definitely not for the faint of heart. Q: The last few episodes you seemed stressed and defensive. Was it just the pressure of the competition? A: Yes. The competition was stiff and it was very stressful. We all felt that the heat was turned up. Q: Who do you want to win? A: I am truly rooting for all of them. It is too hard to choose because they are all deserving. Q: Who from the cast are you genuine friends with? A:I feel a kinship towards all of them. However, I speak with Peppermint, Charlie, Sasha, and Farrah the most. Q: Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you. A: People would be surprised to find out that I almost didn't audition for season nine, and was thinking about going to culinary school instead! Q: What's ahead for Alexis? A: Next, I'll be touring with my one womAn show, so be sure to come check it out! Also, stay tuned for music.

et your popcorn ready, get comfortable on the sofa and turn the TV to the Turner channel. Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and FilmStruck will celebrate Pride Month this June with extensive movie lineups dedicated to exploring LGBT themes in cinema. Honoring a number of LGBT actors and artists whose talents helped them overcome the roadblocks they faced because of their orientation or gender identity, TCM will spotlight Gay Hollywood, hosted by entertainment journalist Dave Karger and author and historian William Mann, every Thursday in June, and FilmStruck will present a Gay and Lesbian Cinema showcase, hosted by film critic Alonso Duralde. Before the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City, Hollywood's LGBT community was forced to stay in the shadows, both on the screen and off. Depictions of same-sex love in the movies were rare and often coded, and members of the film industry were expected to draw a discreet veil over any such tendencies. The sexual revolution and the increasingly visible LGBTrights movement began to open up new opportunities for LGBT stars and stories to be brought out of the “celluloid closet.
64 | Hotspots.LGBT
TCM's Gay Hollywood will take a look at both open and closeted stars throughout film history, including:
MGM star William Haines (Just a Gigolo, 1931) is considered the first openly gay Hollywood actor. For nearly 50 years, he shared his life with his partner, Jimmie Shields. And despite seeing his movie career end after refusing to give in to studio demands, he went on to enjoy an enormously successful career as one of Hollywood's most sought-after interior designers Some celebrities of the 1940s, though widely known to be gay, remained closeted during their careers, including composer Cole Porter (Night and Day, 1946) and actor Clifton Webb (The Razor's Edge, 1946) Several top male heartthrobs of the 1950s and '60s, including Rock Hudson (All That Heaven Allows, 1955), Montgomery Clift (Suddenly, Last Summer, 1959) and Anthony Perkins (Psycho, 1960), were gay, although they remained closeted during all or most of their careers.
overseas for a job assignment while his partner stays in Manhattan to care for his best friend who is dying of AIDS.
Two of America's finest playwrights were gay and had their seminal plays adapted for the screen, including Tennessee Williams (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, 1958) and Edward Albee (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, 1966)
The Times of Harvey Milk (1984) – Rob Epstein won an Oscar for this powerful documentary chronicling the life and activism of murdered gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk. Victim (1961) – Basil Dearden's groundbreaking drama stars Dirk Bogarde as a barrister who decides to fight back after being blackmailed over his homosexuality.
Actress Linda Hunt (The Year of Living Dangerously, 1982) has been open about her marriage to her partner Karen Kline.
It may have taken him a while, but Oscar® winner Joel Grey (Cabaret, 1972) eventually came out of the closet in 2015 at the age of 82
FilmStruck will explore the ways in which cultural and societal institutions have often suppressed sexual orientation over the course of history, including in the cinema. FilmStruck's Gay and Lesbian Cinema bundle will highlight movie depictions of same-sex love with a wide variety of films from different eras, including: Parting Glances (1986) – Bill Sherwood's honest and open drama looks at a gay couple facing an impending separation when one goes
Another Country (1984) - Rupert Everett stars as a gay Eton student in this drama based on the play by Julian Mitchell and inspired by the life of double agent Guy Burgess. Colin Firth, in his film debut, costars as a fellow student with Marxist tendencies. The Watermelon Woman (1996) - Cheryl Dunye plays a version of herself in this witty, nimble landmark of New Queer Cinema. “Our June programming lineups will show how stars and filmmakers from Hollywood and around the globe have navigated around the demands of societal restrictions to tell LGBT stories, while also celebrating some of the stars and artists whose careers have been affected – both positively and negatively – by views of their sexual orientation and gender identity,” said Charles Tabesh, senior vice president of programming & production for TCM and FilmStruck. “We look forward to exploring their lives, work and sharing their stories with our fans.” Hotspots.LGBT | 65

EQUALITY 2017
HOW CORPORATE AMERICA IS STEPPING UP wo years ago this month, the quest for equality by the LGBT community hit its stride when same-sex marriage was declared legal in every state in the union by the Supreme Court of the United States. On June 26, 2015, the case of Obergefell v. Hodges made history in a decision heard round the world. For gays and lesbians in the U.S., true equality seemed within their grasp. And then came Donald Trump. Forget equality. The President and the GOP party he represents seem hell-bent on ostracizing, if not actually killing, the LGBT community. Trump’s slash-and-burn budget proposes massive and devastating reductions in funding for programs that gays rely on for their health and housing — not the least of which is the trillion dollars pulled out from under the bottom line of Medicare. In addition to seniors, the disabled and the poor, Medicare is the sole lifeline for many LGBTs. Add to that the $186 million reduction in HIV prevention and research, and you are left with millions of lives at risk — many of them gay, lesbian and transgender. Yet, just as we absorb that reality, a rainbow is rising in the corporate world. In the 2017 Corporate Equality Index published by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, a record number of U.S. firms — some 515 — scored a perfect 100 score, the largest number in the 15-year history of the annual study. The Corporate Equality Index ranks the nation’s largest employers on issues such as sexual orientation and gender identity in non-discrimination policy, domestic partnership benefits, transgender-inclusive benefits, organizational LGBT competency, and true public commitment to the LGBT community. “These businesses know that LGBT equality isn’t just the right thing to do, it makes them stronger in our global economy,” says Foundation president Chad Griffin. “This past year, as an unprecedented wave of anti-

LGBTQ bills spread across the country, corporate champions state to state — from South Dakota and Mississippi, and North Carolina and Georgia — made their voices heard and stood firmly on the side of fairness and equality.” EQUALITY INDEX: Among the corporations scoring 100% are the nation’s largest corporation, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., plus Chevron Corp., Apple Inc., General Motors Company, General Electric Company, Ford Motor Company, CVS Health Corp., McKesson Corp. (the oldest and largest healthcare company in America), AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., Federal National Mortgage Corp. (Fannie Mae), Hewlett Packard (HP) Inc. and The Kroger Company (supermarkets).

It was especially impressive to discover that within the 108 companies included from the banking community, over 70 percent scored perfectly in the HRC report. Among those who topped the scoreboard in Florida are American Express, Barclays Bank, BB&T, Capital One Financial Corp., Charles Schwab & Company Inc., Citigroup Inc., Discover Financial Services, Edward Jones, Fifth Third Bancorp, Goldman Sachs Group Inc., JPMorgan Chase, MasterCard Inc., Morgan Stanley, PNC Financial Services Group Inc., Prudential Financial Inc., TD Ameritrade, TD Bank NA, U.S. Bancorp, Visa, and Wells Fargo & Co.

by Max Jimenez
Remember when Carly Rae Jepson ruled the summer airwaves of 2012 with Call Me Maybe? Or how about when Pharrell's Happy was the universal anthem of summer joy in 2013? Every summer ushers in a new selection of explosive hits that are meant to heat up dance radio and club loors. Here are the indie artists that top dance loor DJs are predicting will set gay dance loors on ire this summer.
Kristii Lightning Urgent Entertainment What was your favorite song from last summer? Justin Timberlake's Can't Stop the Feeling. Why will your song be this summer's hottest jam? Lightning is a blast and a real banger. It's an R&B, hip-pop song that makes ya wanna dance the irst second you hear it.

What inspired the track? I was given a corset to wear at a photoshoot. It made me feel really sexy and girly and it gave me an impulse to write the song. Do you have a favorite remix of the track? Adonis did an amazing remix. He's a Grammy-Winning producer who has worked with Chris Brown, Ciara, and JLo. What would you be doing if you weren't making music? A scientist. It would be so cool to create experiments and invent something new. What's your message to gay fans this summer? Thank you for being there for me in this not-at-all easy journey! I hope you have a cheerful, happy summer with lots of sunshine! Follow Kristii on Facebook @KristiiOf icial and Instagram @ kristii_music. Kendra Erika Under My Skin Dauman Music What was your favorite song from last summer? Justin Timberlake's Can't Stop the Feeling
because it got me moving every time it came on the radio. Why will your song be this summer's hottest jam? Under Your Skin is perfect for daytime and nighttime. You can amp up your summer pool parties with it, and then later on, blast it out at the club. It's a “big room” track that allows you to escape, which is what a lot of us are looking to do this summer. What inspired the track? Believe it or not, Frank Sinatra's I've Got You Under My Skin. Do you have a favorite remix of the track? Every remix offers a different experience. If I'm in one mood, I'll listen to one remix, and if I'm in another, I'll throw on a different version of the track. What would you be doing if you weren't making music? I love writing, so I'd be an author writing enlightening books, or any kind of inspirational and re lective pieces. What's your message to gay fans this summer? Don't worry about where the world is going. Think about where you're going and enjoy your growth and empowerment. Let the music get under your skin and create your own oasis. Follow Kendra Erika on Facebook @ KendraErikaMusic, Twitter @Kendra_Erika and Instagram @ KendraErika. Ricky Rebel If You Were My Baby Ricky Rebel Music What was your favorite song from last summer? Drake's One Dance; His voice is sensual and low and I love the beat.
Why will your song be this summer's hottest jam? If You Were My Baby makes you feel so good! The beat and arrangement are a throwback to the 80's. Producer Sam Harmonix used the exact synth Prince used to make some of his records. I feel Prince's spirit when I hear the song. What inspired the track? Sam sent the instrumental to me and I listened to it while driving in my car. The lyrics just poured out of me. This is a song I would use to let someone know I was into them. Sometimes songs are a better way to communicate than words alone. Do you have a favorite remix of the track?
Tommy Sunshine's mix is amazing. He is the Godfather of EDM, for heaven's sake. I also love the mix by DJ Hector Fonseca. A whole package of remixes, If You Were My Baby (Remixes), will be released on Hector's label, AUDIO4PLAY Records. What would you be doing if you weren't making music? I'd be a itness guru. Eventually, I'd like to merge my love of itness and music together and create my own itness brand and studios called Ricky Rebel Fitness which will teach people the fundamentals of good health that I've learned from my musical journey. What's your message to gay fans this summer? My message is to rebel against the darkness and shine your light. Life is short. We need to have some fun. DJ Pebbles Heart Away from You Friendship Collective
What was your favorite song from last summer? Drake's One Dance had me happily dancing all summer long! Why will your song be this summer's hottest jam? Mike Greenley, Audrey Martells and the incredible Tony Moran wrote My Fire. It is the most amazing song! Then the legendary Nile Rodgers added the most perfect rhythms to take it over the top. What inspired the track? The idea for My Fire is that even on the darkest of days, there is a ire inside each of us that is ready to light the path forward to the place we're meant to be. Do you have a favorite remix of the track? I love them all! What would you be doing if you weren't making music? Bored somewhere, driving everyone around me crazy because music is the one thing that makes me happy. It is my ire. What's your message to gay fans this summer? Be humble and always stay ierce! Follow Kimberly Davis on Twitter @ ItsMeKimDavis
What was your favorite song from last summer? Drake's One Dance, because it's so sexy! Why will your song be this summer's hottest jam? Heart Away From You is about forbidden love and coming to terms with the idea that some things need to end in order to start anew. It's a seductive track that drips with passion. What inspired the track? Where all good music comes from: a bad break-up! Ha! Do you have a favorite remix of the track? I'm in love with the Culture Code remix! What would you be doing if you weren't making music? I have been doing this so long that everything else is so foreign. Maybe a plastic surgeon? What's your message to gay fans this summer? Be yourself, be proud, go wild and never let anyone judge you for being unique. PHOTO CREDITS Follow DJ Pebbles on Facebook @ DJ Pebbles Photo Credit: Adam Powell DjPebblesMusic. Moves to Build Those
Twin Peaks

by Tom Bonanti
'll venture to say that if you surveyed most guys who work out at your gym, you'd find that the majority have a certain muscle group they prefer to train above all the others. I asked that question of several of my clients the other day. I found that while chest and butt rank right up there, most guys favor bicep exercises as number one. Why? Simply because you can feel the burn and see the pump easier, which brings greater satisfaction quicker! Here are my four top moves for building superior biceps peaks: 1. Alternating Dumbbell Curls – Stand upright with a dumbbell in each

hand held at arm's length. Keep elbows close to the torso with the palms of your hands facing your thighs, this is starting position. Hold the upper arm stationary as you curl the right dumbbell up to your chin, rotating the palm of your hand until it is facing forward. Squeeze your bicep at the top of the rep, then lower the dumbbell back to starting position. Now do a rep with the left arm. Go for 3 sets of 8-12 reps each side. 2. Preacher Bench Curls – Position yourself over the preacher bench so that the armpits are snugly pressed into the pad. Grab a loaded barbell with only about 50-60% of your normal curling weight. Hang arms straight down, then curl the weight all the way up to the chin, squeeze, then lower slowly back to starting position. 3 sets of 8-12 reps should leave your biceps burning nicely. 3. Overhead Cable Curls – Stand in the middle of the cable crossover machine. Grasp the handles with each hand. Make sure the weight on each side is the same, approximately
Stretch Cords
Alternating Dumbbell Curls
70-80% of what you'd use to do a chest cable crossover fly. Standing straight, curl both hands to your ears, keeping elbows high and squeezing biceps hard before returning handles to starting position. Admire those peaks as you perform 3 sets of 8-12 reps. 4. Incline Dumbbell Curls – Sit on a bench at a 45- degree incline. Keep your back straight, feet flat on the floor, and arms at your side as you hold a dumbbell in each hand. Curl the dumbbell by flexing forearm toward shoulders, rotating you palms so that they are facing forward. Squeeze biceps tightly at the top. Slowly lower dumbbells in a controlled manner to starting position. Perform 3 sets of 8 -12 reps with each arm. Remember, no matter what muscle group you're training, keep proper form and execute each rep in a controlled and calculated manner without jerking or swinging.

DONALD TRUMP THE LUNATIC AND HIS LEGACY BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI
As Benjamin Franklin was leaving the Constitutional Convention of 1787 somebody asked him what kind of government the U.S. was going to have. “A republic,” he replied. “If you can keep it.” And for over 200 years we’ve managed to do that. Our Republic is still standing. It hasn’t been easy. In fact, at times it’s downright ugly. But we have ideals, damn it, and we keep trying to get it right. But are we honestly even trying anymore? Ever since the election of Donald Trump, I’ve heard Franklin’s voice in my head saying, “If you can keep it” over and over. Trump’s on a rampage and he’s leaving democratic norms crumbling in his wake. 110 | Hotspots.LGBT
Meanwhile, Republicans, who have the majority in the House and Senate, are just standing by and watching. Actually, they’re helping him do it by not doing their jobs. The fact of the matter is, we have never had a president this dangerously ignorant before. This contemptuous of the Constitution. This petty and gross. But here we are. Some people say that Trump makes them miss George W. Bush and, furthermore, maybe we were wrong to criticize Bush so much. I disagree. Bush was a terrible president. He sent us to war based on lies. He appointed right-wing yahoos to his cabinet and
I’m a liar!” he screams. “I care only about myself! I shouldn’t be trusted. I’m a terrible person.” He’s been telling us for decades. the federal bench. He supported amending the Constitution to deny same-sex couples the right to marry. Was he better than Trump? Well, yes. But that’s a low bar. Trump is the worst. So much progress made by Obama is being walked backwards: LGBTQ rights, environmental protections, voting rights, criminal sentencing reform, expanded access to health insurance, even encouraging kids to eat vegetables. It’s painful to watch. Most painful of all is watching as all of the parts that work to “keep” the Republic are torn apart and flung here and there like an exploding cartoon cuckoo clock. Except this isn’t a cartoon. But Trump is certainly a caricature. He’s a clownish buffoon who has been nothing but honest about himself with the American people. Yes, he lies about everything, even things that are easily disproved with a quick Google search, but his lying is part of his honesty about who he is. “I’m a liar!” he screams. “I care only about myself! I shouldn’t be trusted. I’m a terrible person.” He’s been telling us for decades. Yet he was elected anyway. And now? A lot depends on the Republicans in Congress who have already shown that they’re more than happy to kiss Trump’s ass if it gets them closer to giving tax cuts to the wealthy and taking away
health care from the poor. I’m not holding my breath. Many people have their sights set on the 2018 midterms, hoping for a Democratic wave to take the Republicans out and put grownups in charge. I hope for that, too. But I worry that Democrats think that Trump’s abysmal reign is going to do all of the work for them. It won’t. Millions of people voted for this man even after he told us, showed us even, that he was unfit. The Democrats have their work cut out for them. A man who hears, “If you can keep it” as a dare instead of a warning is a lunatic, not a leader. Lunatics can be entertaining, but they can also be dangerous. We are not obligated to let Trump lead our Republic off a cliff. In fact, in a functioning Republic we are obligated to stop him. So I guess this is the test. I sure hope we pass. Q: One year later, what is your perspective of this tragedy? A: One year later, I am very proud of the victims, families of victims, and friends of victims, who have turned our tragedy in a mission to not only survive, but to thrive in defiance of the evil. I get to see how it’s very probable that there will not be 284 victims and their loved ones in sadness, but 284 victims and their loved ones full of success and a renewed vigor for life. The killer succeeded in our loss of 49 loved ones and I want to do whatever I can to ensure that no one else is lost as a result of his evil.
Q: There are children out there who have been abandoned by their parents — rejected and cast out — because they are LGBT. You embraced your gay child! What words would you say to parents who discover their children are gay? A: To think there are parents in this world who don’t love their children exactly as they are is heartbreaking. Q: What has been the response to the Dru Project you have received? A: The Dru Project (thedruproject.org) has been growing and has become this beautiful tribute and legacy of a great human being. Chris was kind, inclusive, giving, caring and fun. That’s the meaning of the Dru Project. It exemplifies his spirit. We hope to set up a role model Gay-Straight Alliance that can be replicated statewide or nationwide and pass through any school board’s scrutiny.

Q: If you could ask one question to the killer of these innocent lives, including your son’s, what would it be? A: I don’t have anything to say to the killer. I don’t think it’s even a good idea to address him in any fashion. Many of these mass shootings are a result of giving the killers notoriety. That’s what they want… attention, saying their name, becoming infamous. Even my son’s killer mentioned the Boston Bomber when he was on the phone with the police. That makes it clear that he was seeking that same notoriety. I’ve adopted the Aurora victims’ loved ones position and I don’t address the killer in any way, shape or form. I don’t want to see any other families go through the pain of losing their loved one in a mass shooting because that future shooter was trying to emulate the Pulse shooter.

NEED WOOD
WHO’S REALLY
INTELLIGENT? By Woody Miller
H
ey Woody! Your advice to people about using poppers SUCKED. What the f--k is “intelligent use of poppers?” There is no such thing as an intelligent use of poppers. Why don’t you wake up, fool? How about telling people not to use them at all, like any responsible expert would? Well, you’re no expert and you’re certainly not responsible with that kind of advice. Poppers damage the heart and f--k up the immune system. I can’t believe you’d write an article telling people to use them. First off, they’re not amyl nitrate, the stuff on the street is Isobutil (????) nitrate, so they’re not even using the real thing. Shame on you, Woody. I’ve read the last of you. --- An ex-reader
Dear ex-: First of all, you must be confusing me with Ann Landers. She’s the one who gives the kind of dried-vagina advice you’re looking for. My advice is not directed at children, but at grown adults, the kind who’ve already made up their minds about whether they’re going to use drugs. I have never advocated nor condemned drug use. My role is to haul out the Stupid Meter and call the crowd’s attention to it when it goes off. And g-dd-mmit does it goes off in the gay community. It’s a good thing the Stupid Meter doesn’t run on batteries—I’d
be on a irst name basis with the Radio Shack cashier. Do I think people should do drugs? No. Do I think they shouldn’t do drugs? No. I think people should make their own decisions and people like you and me should stay out of it. We should have the same penalties for drug abuse as we do for alcohol abuse. Namely, if you’re not hurting people or property, we should leave you the hell alone. Do something stupid, like driving under the inluence and you should have the book thrown at you. Along with the vase, picture frames and whatever else was on the shelf with the book. We’re exposed to alcohol education all the time (Budweiser “Drink Responsibly” ads come to mind), but you think we shouldn’t be exposed to drug education? No matter what the penalty, there are three things that men will always play with: Fire, drugs and themselves. And not necessarily in that order. The “Just Say No” mentality was given its chance and it failed spectacularly. Your corner is always yapping about giving it more time, and maybe you’re right; maybe we should give it another shot--after all we only gave it a hundred and forty f--king years to work. Maybe that’s just not enough time to see results. If I wanted to write a column for the likes of you I’d have titled it “Chicken Soup for the C-ck.” But I’m writing it for the rest of us who occasionally land on Planet Earth and walk around.
