English actor talks 'sickening' intolerance, waiting for the right queer role and ‘Hunger Games’ gay fan fiction ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

fter a breakout part in the “Hunger Games” saga, as dreamy tribute Finnick Odair, and now a starring role opposite Rachel Weisz in “My Cousin Rachel,” the odds certainly have been in Sam Cla lin's favor. Considering his winning streak, we're holding out hope that a “Fifty Shades of Grey”-style rendezvous between him and the Hemsworth brothers – his idea, mind you – could be the British actor's next major franchise. Till that blessed day comes, check out what the affable Me Before You looker has to say about inding the right gay role, how people are responding to his recent Hollywood body-shaming criticism and French gay porn.

I love seeing a woman in power, but, man, you really get jerked around in “My Cousin Rachel.” (Laughs) Haven't we all been there? Haven't we all been in love and kind of swept off, though

by Chris Azzopardi

usually warned by friends? But, of course, Philip is a bit of a loner and left to his own devices, really. Love is blind, and it makes you do crazy things. (Laughs)

Growing up, what was your introduction to the gay community? I got involved in musical theater at a young age and so that was an immediate part of my life. I mean, the second you kind of step onto the stage and embrace the arts, it becomes a part of you. And the second you open yourself up to becoming an actor and performing and exploring this industry in whatever capacity – any form of art, really – there's an openness, and it's a really wonderful and incredibly rewarding industry to work in.

Plus, you're British. (Laughs) It does really upset me that people aren't open-minded. People are still

hung up on such a traditional old-world life, and people should be allowed to love who they want and be who they want and speak what they want and believe in what they want. I think it's a shame that people are so narrow-minded that they believe their way is the only way. It's sickening, in all honesty.

I don't believe you have played a gay role, and I'm gonna let you give me one good reason why that hasn't happened. (Laughs) I actually got oered the role of a gay man in a TV series! But I didn't think it was well enough written. I have auditioned for gay parts and not got them and desperately wanted them. It's nothing I'm shying away from. It's something I fully embrace. And, actually, I have done it in plays during drama school, but it just hasn't worked yet for me. But I'd jump at the chance. I'd be happy to do anything that was sort of good enough for me to kind of get my feet stuck in, like a meaty role, or an opportunity to work with a great director no matter what the story and no matter what the character.

How aware are you of your LGBT fan base? In all honesty, I kind of don't know (laughs). What I mean is, any fans, really, I'm just – it's always a surprise that someone from whatever country or walk of life (is a fan), and it just sort of amazes me that people travel so far and spend so much time waiting. It's very humbling. It's something that you can never really get used to. I think you'd be not a nice person if you got used to it. It's a consistent shock and one that I try to embrace as best I can. I'm always so grateful that people are interested and do go out of their way to watch my movies and follow my social media. I feel very grateful and lucky and thankful.

Recently, you acknowledged being bodyshamed on movie sets, and I'm glad you spoke out against the issue as it relates to

male actors in Hollywood. There are many men in the LGBT community who deal with body-related issues. You know, I'm like any human being on this planet; I have my insecurities. And it fascinates me that bringing it up in an interview resonated with so many people, only because people seem surprised by the fact that happened. I'm like, are you kidding me? It's been happening for decades and decades and decades. It's just not talked about as much. It's amazing that it has resonated and hit home for so many people. That is, unfortunately, the harsh reality of the world that we live in. We sort of live our lives through Instagram and Twitter and these ilters, and we give people an insight into our lives, but we're so, so picky about what it is that we share. It's so kind of manipulative and it's warped our reality. In actuality, how many people are Hollywood-ready 24/7? I think for me as a father and as a friend and as a son

Hotspots.LGBT | 17

I love the entire Hemsworth family. I say we get all of us involved and we do a “Fifty Shades of Grey.” We can make it reality.

and as a husband, I wanna be around my loved ones – I don't wanna be spending every day under the sun working out.

Actress Niecy Nash recently told The Cut, “Hollywood is a business that will often require you to be something else. But at some point you have to say, I'm going to be 100 percent who I am and be OK with that.” Does that resonate with you? When was the point in your career you decided to be your authentic self? Don't get me wrong: I wholly agree with

what she said. But at the same time, also, one of the reasons I got into acting was because of my insecurities, I suppose. I enjoy hiding behind different characters. My social media feed doesn't really re lect exactly what I'm doing. I am active on social media, but it's not quite my life. That, to me, is private. And when I work I love exploring and having those other characters be another side of me and sharing them with the world. In truth, I partly enjoy physically transforming myself for roles. Someone whose career I admire is Christian Bale; he mentally and emotionally goes to a different place every time, and he physically transforms himself and that's always quite admirable. At the same time, to stand out from the crowd, and in order to put your stamp on your work, to have that con idence in yourself somewhat, you have to believe in yourself that you can do it. I still feel like I'm inding my own feet, and every day I'm learning something new. There will de initely come

a time when I'm 100 percent con ident in family. I say we get all of us involved and we do a family. The best chatter on Facebook this week “That’s when I saw him. I was just in shock at the sight of it. I yelled at the man to get off my pig or I would damn well shoot him. He was screaming saying he was unable to move as his penis was stuck in the pig’s vagina.”

“If we took the energy and vitriol we reserved to pounce on one flag variation in one city and turned it on those who seek to destroy our rights, we’d be running the world tomorrow and we’d all have gorgeous new hairstyles to boot.” —Drag icon LADY BUNNY, speaking about the controversy over the proposal to add the colors black and brown to the rainbow flag.

“This year in the LGBT community, I hope to see young people get more involved politically and become more active and more aware. I want to see young LGBT people – not just young, all LGBT people – get involved politically, because these freedoms that we’ve witnessed in the past 20 years could slip away in a heartbeat.” —RuPAUL, TV drag celebrity and entertainer, in Entertainment Weekly’s LGBT issue this Pride month.

“There’s no way in heck I would attend LA Pride because it’s a Resist March. Instead of celebrating diversity, it’s the opposite of what Pride stands for.”

—GINA ROBERTS, a transgender woman in Los Angeles who served as a delegate at last year’s Republican convention.

“Because I hate the mother*cker. How’s that?” —Broadway star and gay favorite PATTI LUPONE, when a reporter kept pressing her for an answer as to why she hoped President Donald Trump doesn’t attend her current Broadway show, War Paint.

“I thought I should take a lot of pills and I could go to sleep and not wake up anymore. And everything would be so much better because then I would not be transgender and I wouldn’t have to experience the stuff that I experienced at McDonald’s.”

—LA’RAT REED, a transgender woman in Wayne County, Michigan, who is suing her former employer McDonald’s for sexual harassment. Reed alleges the ongoing harassment by co-workers and supervisors included getting her genitals groped and being forced to use a broom closet as a bathroom.

Season 9 The four finalists |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

by Scott Holland

A

s we are getting ready for the finale and find out who RuPaul's Crowns the winner of season 9 and America's next Drag Superstar, I decided to reach out to the four finalists and ask them why they thought they should be America's next Drag Superstar! In alphabetical order they are:

Peppermint: Drag needs to go in a new direction. The trans movement has never been more relevant than it is now and I want to be a part of a historic moment. I think winning the title of "America's Next drag Superstar" as a trans Queen would be just that.

Sasha: America's Next Drag superstar needs to be someone who will evolve along with the art of drag, who's open to new ideas and wants to evolve and change quickly. That's been my focus from the beginning. Even if I don't win the crown, I guarantee that I'll be the one turning out the most surprising new types of drag 38 | Hotspots.LGBT

performance and drag looks! But I'm also committed to curating and representing drag for others. I publish an art magazine about drag (“Velour: The Drag Magazine”) and produce a stage-show called “Nightgowns,” which features some of the best drag I know (especially non-Drag Race drag), with a focus on trans performers, POC drag artists, drag kings and even AFAB queens! No matter the outcome of Drag Race, I plan to leave my mark on the history of drag!

Shea's: “In this competition, I have really had the ability to handle whatever the judges throw at me. Being talented is one thing, but applying those talents shows the true making of a superstar and I believe I did just that."

Trinity: Because I deserve to win! I have C.U.N.T. I feel that I was the most versatile from the girls. I am the hardest worker and I would do the best at representing the brand of Americas Next Drag Superstar.

n Saturday June 24, 2017, Compass will host the annual Stonewall Ball at the Harriet Himmel Theater in CityPlace. The “black and white” party commemorates the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising of June 1969, an event widely regarded as the birth of the modern gay rights movement. Despite our changing times, America's leading companies a n d b r a n d s a r e p r o u d l y remaining out and proud, with more companies including LGBTQ people and families in mainstream advertising and marketing than ever before. Logo, the leading entertainment brand for the LGBTQ community, today released the second annual 'Trailblazing Companies' list, a ranking of companies and brands that have demonstrated a public commitment to LGBTQ people & issues through advertising, communications, and other public initiatives. The campaigns and marketing endeavors on the list showcase a range of personalities, stories and experiences within the LGBTQ community. Hilton, Anheuser-Busch,

L o g o ' s ' T r a i l b l a z i n g Companies' list was created through extensive research conducted in partnership with Witeck Communications, a

strategic communications firm with special expertise in LGBTQ communications. Logo started with a pool of close to 200 consumer-facing companies that earned 100% scores for their internal LGBTQ policies on the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index. Each company was then evaluated based on the seven objective categories that demonstrate each company's support of the LGBT community in the public sphere. Companies were awarded points based on their performance in each of these areas. “Each of these companies is delivering a message of inclusion, diversity and equality that is needed now more than ever,” said Pamela Post, SVP of Programming for Logo. “While we are incredibly proud to recognize these 25 trailblazing companies who are raising the bar higher than just their bottom line, the ultimate goal is to one day reach a time when a list like this is no longer necessary.” Bob Witeck also adds that, “the resonance of LGBTQ attitudes in the marketplace has made a sea of change in how brands express their values, connect innovatively with diverse households, and grow market share. This new study is an encouraging roadmap of trends and opportunities for all brands aiming to step up their competition.”

Disney’s The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid

Mamma Mia

soon as La Streep's calendar cleared. The cast is back: Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and most likely some of the rest, singing other songs from the Swedish Beatles' back catalog (and probably a couple of reprises of tunes from last time). And in 2018 you will go buy a ticket. You know you will. This is your next Waterloo, and Pierce Brosnan's singing voice is the secret slaying force.

The question is not why they're making a sequel to “Mamma Mia!” The 2008 smash grossed over $600 million worldwide, after all. The question is why it took so long to get here. It's been nearly a decade since Meryl Streep and pals warbled ABBA tunes in the service of some kind of plot – truthfully, we forgot what the movie was even about and so did you – and we wondered if anyone would ever have the nerve to say, “You know what? We need even more of ‘that’.” But in a world where “Paul Blart: Mall

predicted that the hot thing on TV in 2017 would be dueling broadway musicals, done live? That an innovative staging of “Grease” would win over television critics and audiences? That old-fashioned musical theater would captivate the nation? Well, it did, predictions be hanged, and now ABC is climbing aboard. The network will revive its _Wonderful World of Disney_ brand and kick off what is certain to be an ongoing series of special broadcasts with _The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live!_ A celebrity-packed cast will be announced as soon as the ink is dry on their contracts. And the clock is already ticking: the airdate is scheduled for Oct. 3 and the network promises an interesting twist on the format, one that will mix live action with animation. We're intrigued, Disney. Now please entice us with some stars.

Scotty Bowers

promises something refreshingly different. Set in Atlanta, it's the story of the first commercial airline flight crew staffed entirely with African-American women. Their lives and careers, and the obstacles they face, will form the ongoing narrative, and the cast will include TV vets Tatyana Ali (”The Fresh Prince of Bel Air”), Bruce Boxleitner (”Babylon 5”), Cristian de la Fuente (”Devious Maids”), Valarie Pettiford (”The Blacklist”), as well as Ja Rule, Mindy Cohn, Cicely Tyson, Marla Gibbs, Todd Bridges, “Glee” star Amber Riley, and the show's creator, former child actor Rae'Ven Kelly, taking control of her own projects starting here. This women-driven enterprise will also feature behind the scenes talent like lesbian filmmaker Aurora Guerrero, whose 2012 feature “Mosquita y Mari” was a hit at Sundance and an LGBT festival staple. “Fly” is shooting now and waiting for a network pickup, but that wait will certainly not be very long. We're looking forward to this one for 2018.

Buckle up For “The Secret History of Hollywood”

Did you get a chance to pick up 2012's trashiest memoir,

“Full Service: My Adventures In Hollywood and The Secret Sex Lives of The Stars”? Not yet, you say? Well, summer's here and the time is right, as it were. But if you'd rather wait for the documentary film on the subject, well, the time is almost right for that, too. Scotty Bowers, now 93 years old and the author of “Full Service”, was a World War II vet who came to Hollywood and quickly fell in with a circle of queer movie stars, all of whom were looking for sex on the down low. Bisexual, hungry and ready to make friends and money, Bowers arranged the liaisons (and often participated) and took notes. Now, documentary filmmaker Matt Tyrnauer (”Valentino: The Last Emperor”) has the movie version ready, titled “Scotty and The Secret History of Hollywood”, and there was a buyer's screening at the recent Cannes Film Festival. That means there's no distributor just yet. But salacious sells, and so it's only a matter of time before your local LGBT film festival gets its hot hands on this hotter property. Romeo San Vicente politely requests that “Mamma Mia 3” be set in outer space.

YEP, HE’S HAVING A BABY Trystan Reese, a transgender man in Portland, Oregon, is pregnant with the child of his partner of seven years, Biff Chaplow. “I’m okay with my body being a trans body. I’m okay being a man who has a uterus and has the capacity and capability of carrying a baby. I don’t feel like it makes me any less of a man. I just happen to be a man who is carrying a baby.” As reported by CNN, Reese, 34, and Chaplow, 31, who adopted Chaplow’s niece and nephew in 2011, said they knew many transgender men who have been able to have babies in “a healthy and responsible way.”

over the forces of exclusion, intolerance and hate,” Trudeau said. “We will also soberly acknowledge that there are many challenges still to overcome.” In the United States, President Donald Trump declined to recognize Pride Month as President Barack Obama had done, and spoke instead at a rally of conservative evangelicals promising to support and protect their religious freedom.

HOW NOW BROWN COW?

Seven percent of all Americans believe that chocolate milk comes from brown cows, according to a national online survey commissioned by the Innovation Center of U.S. Dairy, according to the Washington Post. That works out to 16.4 million misinformed, milkdrinking people. Everyone else knows that chocolate milk is made by combing milk, sugar and cocoa.

HOT BODIES Workout

Absolutely

the Best Routine for Lower Body By Tom Bonanti

Y

ou’ve seen him in the clubs, at the pool, and in your gym – the jacked muscle dude with cannonball shoulders, biceps like soft balls and giant slab- like pecs. Then your enthusiasm for this vision of muscledom wanes as you look down at his pencil-like, underdeveloped legs. No one I know looks forward to “leg day”, but if you want a strong, fit body and a classic, symmetrical physique, you must work out lower body. My advice is to keep the routine simple, safe, and consistent. Focus upon these five exercises that will hit every major muscle group. Perform this regime once, or perhaps twice per week for optimum gains. Go for 3-4 sets of eight to twelve reps of each exercise.

5. Calf raises are simple and easy. Begin by

using your own body weight as you go up and down on your tip toes. Then as your calves gain size and strength, you can increase resistance by holding dumbbells, kettlebells or even a barbell across your shoulders. As with all lower body weight training exercises, make sure to stretch, rest between sets, and stay mindful of using proper form

1

2

HERE’S MY GUIDE TO EXERCISES THAT WORKOUT THE LOWER BODY:

1. Squats are simply the best weight training exercise you can do. They work every muscle group of the body, especially quads, hamstrings and glutes. If you don’t have access to a barbell and squat rack, you can squat with dumbbells, kettlebells, or even your own body weight. 2. Deadlifts are as manly as it gets in the weight room. Basically, you’re trying to lift as much weight as you can, just by picking up a barbell or dumbbells and putting them back down. Check your form- square off your stance, bend your knees slightly, keep your head up, lift the weight off the floor, squeeze your butt and hamstrings, and put the weight back down on the floor. 3. Dumbbell lunges will target butt better than any other weight training exercise. Grab some dumbbells or kettlebells, lunge forward on one leg as you drop to one knee with the other leg, rise, then alternate by lunging forward with the other leg, etc. You can do these as stationary lunges or you can do walking lunges around the gym, in the parking lot, or on your own driveway. For a special treat try lunging on an incline for maximum burn! 4. Leg extensions really define and shape the quads, the muscles at the front of the upper leg. When you perform these (if you have access to the apparatus), never lock the knees out at the top of the movement. Don’t use massive amounts of weight since this can prove to be detrimental to your knees. Instead use manageable weight, do more reps and sets, and go for that nice slow burn.

3-4 SETS OF 8-12 REPS OF EACH EXERCISE

“how far our moral standards have fallen.”

SCOTT LIVELY BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI

Happy Pride Month, everybody! June is the month when the sale of rainbow merchandise skyrockets and anti-gay right wingers decry the very right of LGBTQ people to exist, let alone celebrate that existence. Case in point, Scott Lively, a man who literally wrote a book about how Nazis were all gay and that’s why they were such vicious killers, is having a very unhappy Pride Month. But wait a minute, back to the gay Nazi thing. Since Nazis are making a resurgence under the Trump regime, are these Richard Spencer brand Nazis also supposedly gay, too? Or was that only the old Nazis? IT’S ALL SO CONFUSING! Anyway, Lively, who views LGBTQ people through a horror movie lens (see: Gay Nazi book), thinks that we should remember REAL gay history, which, when retold by him, could easily provide enough material for one

90 | Hotspots.LGBT

of those church haunted houses that are supposed to scare you away from sin but really just make you wish you’d spent your money on drugs instead. In a June 2 column on World Nut Daily, Lively is very upsets at the U.S. Navy for daring to post a rainbow flag on their Facebook page celebrating ALL who serve. Lively cites a 1957 publication in which the Navy said homosexuality was bad, which is proof, in his mind, that a Pride post in 2017 shows “how far our moral standards have fallen.” Lively contends that “we reached the height of our civility as a nation” in the 1950s because we apparently properly hated the gays back then. This is a very convenient revision of history. Perhaps anticipating push back, Lively does admit that “improvements in race relations were slow.” Uh, you think? Jim Crow laws were

enforced until 1965 and it’s not like America started over with a clean non-racist slate after that. I know that white people think that Obama brought racism back but the truth is it never really left. So, yeah, I think “height of our civility” is a real stretch. The rest of Lively’s column is a greatest hits compendium of right-wing “facts” about LGBT history. According to Lively, “Behind the facade of ubiquitous pro-LGBT propaganda in the media and academia is a community of deeply troubled people, rife with drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, self-destructive behaviors, ‘hate crime’ hoaxes, Machiavellian political manipulations at every level, pathological selfcenteredness and seething hatred for anyone who dares oppose the ‘gay’ agenda.” “Political manipulations at every level,” huh? Pretty good for a bunch of drug addicted losers riddled with self-hatred. Especially since Lively also claims that LGBT people are also responsible for the “exploitation and degradation of our military.” No wonder the

military wants us now. We have no life worth yet also have super human abilities. Although, wait, is Lively talking about “gay Nazis” again? Again, SO CONFUSING. The fact is, LGBT people have been serving in the military for as long as the military has existed. For the vast majority of that time, LGBT service members were forced to hide and many were booted out regardless of their professionalism, expertise, or training. Newswatch PRIDE MATTERS!

Pride events attendance up; LGBTs fear rollbacks of gains Pride events are taking on a renewed importance in 2017, with 63% of LGBTQ Americans surveyed said that that they will (or already did) attend their hometown Pride in 2017. This is compared to 47% having attended their hometown Pride events last year, representing a 34% increase in interest and participation for 2017. Further, 84% reported that Pride events across the United States are as important as ever, and 82% indicated that they feared rollbacks of recent LGBTQ equality gains. These eye-popping statistics are reported by the Community Marketing & Insights (CMI) 11th Annual LGBT Community Survey®, fielded in April/May 2017, which drew participation from 17,300 LGBTQ Americans across the spectrum of sexual orientations, gender identities, generations and ethnicities. It is the largest, longest-running study of its kind; a profile of community members involved in hundreds of LGBTQ media, websites, blogs, social media, apps, organizations and events. Full results from the survey will be released July 5. More information at www.CMI.info.

COMING SOON TO BROADWAY!

CHER

The Musical

Cher: The Musical will be hitting Broadway soon, the music icon, aged 71, has confirmed. According to a report by Gay Times, the musical will be written by Rick Elice of Jersey Boys fame and will be directed by Jason Moore, whose credits include the critically-acclaimed Avenue Q. The musical will, of course, include the diva’s many hit songs spanning five decades, and will follow Cher’s life from her childhood in LA through her collaboration with, and marriage to, Sonny Bono as well as her continued success in later years. Three actresses are expected to play Cher across the many stages of her life. Stay tuned!

Dept. of Commerce removes sexual, gender protections The Department of Commerce has removed sexual orientation and gender identity protections that have been included in the department’s EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity) statement since 2010. The amended EEO statement now reads “The Department of Commerce does not tolerate behavior, harassment, discrimination or prejudice based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, or disabilities...” It no longer includes sexual orientation or gender identity.

Newswatch

Generic version of Truvada approved by the FDA The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic version of Truvada, the only drug approved for use as PrEP (pre-exposure propylaxis) which helps to prevent HIV-negative individuals from acquiring the virus. Truvada is also used in combination with other drugs in the treatment of HIV. The FDA announced its approval of the generic version on its website. The drug currently costs about $1500 a month or $18,000 a year for the one-pill daily dose. Generic versions of drugs are typically much less expensive than the brand name — sometimes as much as 70-80%. It is not known when the generic version of Truvada will become available.

HIV/AIDS Council resigns; says Trump “doesn’t care”

The six members of President Donald Trump’s Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS have resigned, telling Newsweek magazine they cannot work for a president who “simply does not care.” In a statement, the six members said, “As advocates for people living with HIV, we have dedicated our lives to combating this disease and no longer feel we can do so effectively within the confines of an advisory body to a president who simply does not care.” The six — Scott Schoettes, Lucy Bradley-Springer, Gina Brown, Ulysses Burley III, Michelle Ogle and Grissel Granados —also said in their statement: “Signs of President Trump’s lack of understanding and concern regarding this important health issue were apparent when he was a candidate. While Secretary Clinton and Senator Sanders both met with HIV advocates during the primaries, candidate Trump refused. Whatever the politics of that decision, Mr. Trump missed an opportunity to learn — from the experts —a bout the contours of today’s epidemic and the most pressing issues currently affecting people living with HIV.

NO SMOKING ALLOWED

Florida marijuana bill has (finally) passed Senate Bill 8A won the approval of the Florida legislature and has passed. It will implement and regulate a state constitutional amendment passed in November 2016 that legalized marijuana’s medical use. The new law will call for the state to grant 10 medical marijuana treatment centers along with the seven that already hold licenses to cultivate low-THC marijuana for the state’s current, more limited cannabis program. There are strict guidelines: 4 Counties and cities are allowed to ban dispensaries; 4 Doctors will be guilty of a first-degree misdemeanor if they are found to prescribe medical marijuana without “reasonable belief” that the patient suffers from a condition eligible for treatment; 4 Medical marijuana will not be available to be consumed by smoking it; 4 Dispensaries will be allowed to advertise their products, but state officials will have to approve all advertisements, and no cartoon characters or marketing techniques aimed at children are permitted.
