RU PAUL’S DRAG RACE SEASON 9

“... this situation presents us with a fantastic opportunity to grow.”
alace, the iconic gay restaurant and bar on Ocean Drive that is world-renowned for its live drag performances, is celebrating its last weekend at the corner on 12th Street and Ocean Drive with a splash, ending three decades of what can only be described as a remarkable history. Plans call for Palace to re-open at another as yet unidentified location. It’s fitting that the final celebration will be a big one this July 4th weekend for the establishment which has served the famous — and the infamous — at its 1200 Ocean Drive location. A long-time popular haunt for celebrities — Andy Cohen, Nene Leakes, and Perez Hilton have been spotted dining outside the eatery just recently, and in the old days Luciano Pavarotti, Elton John, Madonna and Princess Diana were frequently spotted at the 8 | Hotspots.LGBT
restaurant Steve Palsar launched Palace in February 1988. Miami was a much different city and at that time there were no other restaurants on the Drive. Everyone thought Palsar was crazy to introduce one, but he did. Palace opened at 1200 Ocean Drive — Palsar’s “little slice of heaven,” as he called it — and it would usher in a whole new era that would eventually lead to cafes up and down the street. “The truth of the matter is that this situation presents us with a fantastic opportunity to grow,” says owner Thom Donall. “We’re going to find a new place that has the same character but offers a bigger performance space that better suits the needs of our changing community”. It was a pleasure to sit down with Thom for this exclusive Hotspots interview:
When and why did you move down to South Florida?
I had been coming down to South Beach for 15
years and fell in love with [the place], so I decided to make the move. I made the decision to buy a condo on ocean drive.
What did you do for work before you moved here?
I was a metal artist for many years and then I had an opportunity to open my own club. I designed and built 2 clubs in Michigan and basically furnished the clubs with all of my designs.
What made you decide to purchase the Palace 10 years ago?
I walked by it so many times going to the gym, and I felt the place needed some TLC. I gave the manager my card to give to the owners and the transaction happened three weeks later.
What was the first thing you changed after purchasing the Palace?
I spent the first weeks cleaning and painting giving the place the love it deserved and got the front bar open. In that time-frame I replaced the sound system and staff. We as a team worked together to make it a fun place for the community to call home.
How has the Palace changed in the last 10 years?
I brought in shows seven days a week and became part of the community by being involved with a lot of the agencies in Miami (Task Force, Care Resource, and others). I also started the block parties three times a year, which are huge and raise money for important organizations. Palace has been a platform for our new LGBTQ generation and has opened many doors for our house entertainers such as Latrice Royale, Tiffany Fantasia, DJ Cindel, DJ Deanne, Noel Leon and many more.
Are you excited about the move of Palace?
The move is challenging, but things happen for a reason. Its exciting in that we have an opportunity to take The Palace to the next level.
There are so many rumors about where the Palace is going to move to. Do you want to comment on that?
I have some places in mind, but I am still looking and haven’t made a decision yet. However, I promise the community will be happy when it’s all said and done.
Tuesday, July 4 will be the final day of Palace at 1200 Ocean Drive and they will be bringing in special lights, sound and production for its last dance. “This is not farewell,” confirms Donall. “It’s a ‘see ya soon.’” Those who wish to be among the first to know about the new location should text the word PALACE to 64600.
What should the South Florida audience expect from the closing party of Palace at its current location this Tuesday, July 4?
We will have many give-a-ways (Palace hats, t-shirts, tanks, etc.), two brunches and after the second brunch a block party that will be over the top! This includes International DJ Dan Slater (Australia), GOGO Dancers, and drag performers. This will be a block party with amazing sound and lighting production, which will be followed by an incredible fireworks display sponsored by the Ocean Drive Business Association. The block party start at 4 p.m. to midnight, with fireworks at 9 p.m.

Season 9
RuPaul's Newest Drag Superstar |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
by Scott Holland
T
he finale started with a production number presenting all of the queens from Season 9 and ended with RuPaul and dancers — who I must say looked more beautiful than ever! Next up were mini interviews with the top four finalists who all wore extravagant outfits. Then Ross Matthews explained to us how the new lip sync for the crown was going to work. The wheel was spun and Trinity was chosen. She got to choose who she would lip sync against, and she picked Peppermint. When Peppermint twirled from an above-the-knee outfit with long dark hair into a long fabric gown with white short hair, the battle was over!
38 | Hotspots.LGBT
Next up were Shea and Sasha. These best buddies had to compete against each other for the last spot in the final two. Who knew Sasha was such a dramatic and excellent lip syncer? But when she pulled her wig off and tons of rose petals fell out is when we knew for sure, she was taking the final spot. While Peppermint and Sasha were preparing, we got to see Season 8 winner, Bob The Drag Queen, with another mini interview with Rupaul, and find out what Bob had been up to. At this point we were just left with Peppermint vs. Sasha, and Sasha snatched the crown (you may recall this writer predicting Sasha's win a few weeks back). It was a pleasure to sit down with Sasha, only days after she was crowned, for this exclusive Hotspots interview:
Q: At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name? A: I started doing drag as a little kid, and quite honestly, I thought I invented it as I had never seen other drag queens. As I
started finding out about drag and its history, I realized how important it would be to tap into the heritage of drag and become the gender-fluid and fabulous queen I had always dreamed of becoming. I started doing drag professionally at age 25. My real name is Sasha, which is a confusingly gender non-specific name‌I love that. I just gave myself a fabulous last name, Velour, the poor's man's velvet.
Q: How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul's Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you got chosen? A: I auditioned twice. The first time my drag was very much in development. This time I really felt clear about what I was doing and what role drag would play in my life and what impact I wanted to leave. When I was chosen it was such a huge vote of confidence, and made me feel like I did have a place and I wanted to show who I really was. Q: Tell us about your RuPaul's Drag Race experience‌ A: It was an incredible experience! I
knew it would be challenging and that I would have to do things outside my comfort zone. I went in open-minded that my drag would change. What I didn't expect was to make connections and friendships with the other drag queens and that our friendships would become creative collaborations. These collaborations changed my drag even more. Drag Race was really a community experience for me.
Q: Before and after the taping of the finale, what was your thought process of you winning? A: It was hard to say as I thought we were all on equal footing going into the finale. It was really hard to predict. The audience's reaction to my lip sync made me feel like the winner. I had no regrets no matter what happened. I felt like I really got to show what I am as a drag queen and what I do.
Q: If you couldn't win, who would you have wanted to win? A: I believe in each of the top four for different reasons. At the end of the day I was 40 | Hotspots.LGBT
rooting for Peppermint, as we shared a platform that could represent our own parts of the LGBTQ community. I knew whichever one of us would win we would step up and become leaders to show people that they can live their truest lives with grace and kindness, and make changes in the world.
Q: What's the first thing you are going to buy with the money? A: I'm going to invest the money in this drag show in Brooklyn called “Nightgown. I am going to take it on the road to show that drag can be expanded into radical new places. I am transforming the show into a not-for-profit organization. It will benefit queer people in need of housing and education. The most important legacy I can leave is someone who is a community leader and activist!
Q: Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you. A: I am a lot sillier than people think. I take drag seriously, so I come across that way, but I don't take myself seriously. I do impressions and crazy accents all day long. Q: What's ahead for Sasha? A: New and different types of performances. Now that I realize how people love the show-stopping wildness of my performances, I got reenergized to take it even further.
For more information on Sasha, go to her website at sashavelour.com or visit her on social media at: Facebook.com or Instagram.com//Sas haVelour

fter a massive sold-out 2016 summer tour, Lifetime’s hit series Bring It! is back by overwhelming demand. Miss D and her Dancing Dolls, the stars of Lifetime’s hit series Bring It!, return to the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, July 1 at 8 p.m. as part of the Bring It! Live 2017 summer tour. One of the most vibrant personalities on television today, Dianna Williams made a name for herself training over 2,000 dancers across the U.S. in various styles of dance. She was blessed with the opportunity to open her own dance establishment called The Dollhouse Dance Factory, which now has locations in Jackson, Mississippi and Birmingham, Alabama. With a passion for teaching her students the importance of persistence, determination and positive self-esteem, Dianna has paved the way for the elite world of hiphop majorette competition, and has given a voice to an untapped genre of dance. Due in large part to Dianna’s guidance and perseverance, majorette dancing is now known throughout the world. It was a pleasure to sit down with Diana for this exclusive Hotspots interview:
Q: At what age did you realize you wanted to be a dancer? A: I have been dancing for as long as I can remember. I originally wanted to be a ballerina. As I got older I ran track, was a cheerleader and did almost everything else. When I got into my junior year of high school I realized that I should focus on dancing.
Q: When did you realize you had the ability to teach? A: It wasn’t until I got to college at Jackson University. It was amazing when it first happened and it took off from there. Q: How did opening your own studio “Doll House” come about? A: In 2010, my hubby and I decided to create the dance space for young youth in our community. We live in an urban community and I placed the studio smack in the middle of the community. It’s not the best neighborhood, but we can keep the fees low and anyone could join if they want to.
Q: We have seen instances of other television teachers being particularly rough with their students… how do you find the balance of being stern but not rough? A: Well I am a mom first, as I have a child of my own. I think about how my mom treated me, and I would never want a child to feel like they are being belittled or put down. My girls know if I get really, really, quiet that someone is in trouble. I can never put them down! Q: How do you keep the sexy moves from being too provocative for the Dancing Dolls? A: These girls are teenagers and I don’t look at them as being sexy. There is a fine line, and I make sure we don’t cross it. It’s important to me that all the dance moves
are in good taste.
Q: How did Bring It! come about, and once you decided to do it how did the parents and students react? A: They approached me and I was unsure, but after speaking with the parents and students, we decided to do it. If we knew about how bad social media was, we probably would have said no, but in actuality it has helped the girls get stronger. Q: Are the rivalries between dance troupes as heated as they seem on TV? A: Hell yeah! If anything television tones it down. Q: What does the future hold for Bring It? A: I hope that it continues as we have an amazing network that supports us. The girls have had so many opportunities because of the show. Q: Do you have a favorite routine? A: “Glow in the Dark”, “Willie Wonka”, there are so many… it’s hard.
Q: What should the fans of the show expect from the Bring It! Live tour, and how does this tour differ from last year’s? A: This tour is definitely going to be up close and personal. It’s entertaining and a lot of fun. Last year was a great tour, but this year its insanely amazing as the girls have grown tremendously. You are going to feel like you are at a Beyoncé concert.
Q: Is there anything I didn’t ask you that you would like to talk about? A: We love and support the LGBT community. We have dedicated [dance] numbers to Orlando and have even changed to a rainbow costume and dedicated it to Pulse.
Tickets, which are available at BrowardCenter.org, for Bring It! Live 2017 summer tour are $44.25–$54.25 with $114.25 LATAM Airlines Club level tickets and a $99.75 VIP Golden Circle deluxe package that includes premium seating, pre-show photo opportunity with the artists and show merchandise. There is also a $40 add-on option that includes a pre-show photo opportunity.

Missy Meyakie LePaige (MML)
uWhat was the first drag show you saw? Tell us about the experience…
The first drag show I saw back home in St Louis starred Miss Kiki Kortell, Kitty Litter, Miss Regina, Commille Simpson, Vicky Valentino and a host of others — and I was amazed. Being sheltered, all I knew was church, church, and more church and I had never seen nothing like this at all! I was speechless... Thank you, ladies, I’ve learned so much from all your hard work and dedication to this art! uWhen did you decide you wanted to do drag and
when did you realize it would be a profession?
In 2003 I entered this competition show and had no clue on how it should be done, but I won! I continued on after I won. I wasn’t the prettiest thing, but I knew I had the gift to entertain and captivate a crowd. When I moved here and started to be a cast member at the legendary Palace is when I realized this is what I wanted to do for a living and go hard in this profession. Look at me now!
uWho is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother, and why?
My drag mother is Victoria LePaige from Chicago; I have the honor to carry her last name. My Florida drag mom is Ciara
Douglas. These two ladies have been such a big help in my career from talks, meals, ideas, and sometimes just a huge shoulder to lean on. I’m so grateful for these lovely beautiful individuals. You're going to get me in trouble if I pick one when it comes to my fav queen, because there are so many I love. Some of them are Melissa, Myhia (my daughter) Athena Dion, Calypso Lords, TP Lords, Fantasia GaGa, Chevelle Brooks, Latrice Royale, Tlo Ivy, Elishaly d'witshes, Akeria Davenport, Kalah Mendoza, Joanna James, and Marci Mogul — just to name of few! I have learned a lot from these individuals! uWhat’s your favorite number to perform and why?
I have two favorite numbers to perform, they are: “Don’t Stop Believing,” and “No Place I’d Rather Be.” I love these two songs because no matter what I have or will ever face in life I have got to keep believing in order to get to my destination. There is no place I would rather be than with my friends, family and fans! uWhat’s the best thing that has happened to you in drag?
The best two things that ever happened to me is winning my first national title (showgirl), and
ueens we
Why We Love Her! She arrived from St Louis and quickly made a name for herself in South Florida. She won National Showgirl on her first try.
She went through one of the worst tragedies possible — survived, and is stronger! Her strong faith in God!
also watching how all [the little kids] give me so much love. It’s the best feeling ever, as they are our future. uWhat differentiates you from other Queens (Makes you Unique)?
What sets me apart from other queens is I’m like the “mother” to all. It’s just an instinct I carry. I get that from my mom! uWhat does the future hold?
“I wasn’t the prettiest thing, but I knew I had the gift to entertain and captivate a crowd.”
I’m really excited about my future, because I believe God has some unfinished promises that are about to unfold. After losing my husband in 2015, and almost giving up, I
have learned that if I can make it through that I’m sure my destiny is so much greater...the bigger the problems the bigger the blessings. “I got this.”

QUESTIONS
He set out to be a ‘working’ Shakespearean actor. Little did he know his influence in theater would unfold beyond his wildest dreams...
R
BY PETER JACKSON
onnie Larsen is a highlyacclaimed Fort Lauderdalebased actor, director and playwright who has been entertaining South Florida audiences for years — but his stature and influence in theater extends well beyond Florida. His productions have been seen in every major city in America, as well as in Canada, Australia, Italy and London. Twelve of his plays have been produced and five have been seen OffBroadway in New York City. He has
68 | Hotspots.LGBT
also made a documentary that had theatrical runs at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco, Cinema Village in New York City and the Laemmle 5 in Los Angeles as well as showings at numerous film festivals in America, England and the Berlin Film Festival. His current production, Happy Ending which the Sun-Sentinel’s Rod Hagwood called, “a thriller, comedy, drama or sex romp (or all of those)”, opened at the Andrews Living Arts Studio on June 22 and plays through July 16.
“Someone said I should write a play about my sex life because critics in San Francisco only cared about new plays and Audiences want to see plays about sex. So I wrote a play called Scenes From My Love Life and it was a hit...” Q: What attracted you to the theater — when and how did you get started? A: I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t interested in theater. I remember my dad had a ton of books and a few plays and for some reason I was only interested in the plays. I memorized a speech from Death of a Salesman when I was about 7 and I went around saying, “Attention must be paid, attention must be paid.” I was very dramatic. And I loved dressing up! In the 6th grade I wrote my first play called The Elf Play and I was hooked on theater but I didn’t write another play ‘til I was 25. Acting became my obsession. Writing plays sort of happened by accident.

IF YOU GO...
Ronnie Larsen’s popular show “Happy Ending” has returned to Fort Lauderdale at a larger venue, the Andrews Living Arts Studio, where it will play through July 16. The show contains nudity. For tickets and information, go to RonnieLarsen.com
Q: Among your many achievements in theater, five of the 12 plays you’ve produced have made it to Off-Broadway. Was that something you set out to do? A: My goal was to be a working Shakespearean actor. Shakespeare was my focus until I was 25. I was doing lots of Shakespeare plays in San Francisco and nobody cared and the shows weren’t very good and I made no money and then someone said I should write a

play about my sex life because critics in San Francisco only cared about new plays and audiences want to see plays about sex. So I wrote a play called Scenes From My Love Life and it was a hit and I made a little money and got some good press, so then I wrote my second play, Making Porn, and it ran for 500 performances Off-Broadway and my whole life changed. But I never set out to be a playwright, it just sort of happened and now I’m 48 and I’ve been writing plays ever since going on 25 years. Q: What inspires you, Ronnie? Where do the ideas come from that you put on paper and then on stage? A: Audiences inspire me. Watching an audience enjoy a show and the laughter and the silences when a whole audience are enjoying your show, it’s a drug for me. I write for an audience. I want them to be entertained. I always say that if my first play had been a disaster I might not have written a second play, but once I figured out that I could write things that would make people laugh or connect or recognize themselves on stage...I was hooked. I put things on stage that I want to see. I get bored very easily, so
3

if I get an idea that entertains me and holds my interest then I’m pretty sure it will entertain others. Q: Theater seems to be thriving in South Florida. How would you describe the local scene and the variety, as well as quality, of shows being produced? A: The theater scene in South Florida is one of the healthiest scenes in the country because a wide variety of shows succeed here and audiences in South Florida love going to the theater. That’s not true of a lot of places in this country. I actually feel like like I’m in the perfect place at the perfect time.
4
Q: What’s next for Ronnie Larsen? To borrow a line from Evita, ‘where do you go from here?’ A: I didn’t work in the theater for a chunk of time because I got sort of burnt out and then I met my husband and he didn’t have a green card so we were living in Mexico together and waiting on the Supreme Court. So I know what it’s like to be deprived of doing what you love. Now that my husband and I are in the states together, I’m just so grateful to be working again. My goal is to keep doing exactly what I’m doing and not take any of it for granted. I’m also really interested in producing new plays by unestablished playwrights. There are so many great shows out there that have only been produced once or twice and never got published and never got produced in New York, Besides doing my own plays I want to bring those type of shows to South Florida and possibly tour them. My goal is to just keep working and keep trying to entertaining audiences.

Il Paesano: An Italian lover’s dream
Outstanding food, wine selection makes this a hidden gem By ANDREW LaROCHELLE

ust when you think you have been to all Fort Lauderdale’s best restaurants, you are surprised when you find a hidden gem that changes your whole perspective. In this case, Steven and I found a small, self-described “Italian gourmet food and wine market” called Il Paesano (2645 E. Oakland Park Blvd., just east of the Coral Ridge Mall) which is nothing less than an oasis of European charm. Hosts Paola and Virgilio made us feel at home and treated us like family. The restaurant has a rustic feel with a coffee bar, deli and cheese counter, and our favorite: a private wine room! There are several small tables with colorful plates and some communal tables for lunch and overflow at dinner. We sat at a quiet table in the dining room next to a Canadian couple who were enjoying some wine and cheese. SUMMER MELTDOWN Burn Fat
Fast!

By Tom Bonanti
Summer heat and humidity can really take their toll on you. Yet summer can be fun, too, with ample opportunities for vacation, summer parties and extra time at the pool. Wouldn’t it be great if you could shed those extra pounds as easily as a wet speedo? Instead of covering up and making excuses, here are some pointers that will help you melt fat and inches, now, this summer!
Curb your carbs. The body normally relies upon carbohydrates which are broken down as glucose and utilized as energy to fuel every activity from digestion to skate boarding. When you cut back on carbohydrates your body produces ketones which burn stored fat as energy. This process logically called ketosis is used by many athletes, body builders and models to cut-up and trim down. You can achieve ketosis in your own body by cutting out starches like rice, bread and potatoes from your meals. Ramp up your workouts with High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). If you get bored walking the dog or climbing on board a treadmill for endless hours, you
may have “cardio burnout”. Unfortunately, you need cardio-vascular training if you want to lose those extra pounds. I recommend putting a little heat under your cardio by trying HIIT. Here’s an example of a HIIT cardio routine: 1. Warm-up with stretches, pushups, and running in place for 5 minutes. 2. Do wind sprints, fast and furious for 30 seconds. 3. Slow down and powerwalk, swinging dumbbells at your sides for five minutes. 4. Rest for 30 seconds and repeat this process five or six times. With HIIT you can be crazy and creative as you burn tons of calories! Lifting weights builds muscle, boosts your metabolism and burns fat. Muscle is catabolic, meaning it burns calories even when you’re not doing anything. Basically, the more muscle you have the more calories you burn, even when you are sleeping. Recently it has been found that people who lift regularly exhibit high Excess PostExercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). Simply put, your metabolism remains elevated all day long and you burn fat and calories even after you’ve left the weight room. Stay busy and active and those pounds will melt away. A sedentary life-style is sure to make you pack on pounds. Don’t let yourself become a bored, inactive couch potato. Make plans, run errands, arrange dates, set goals, take a walk on your lunch break, organize a weight loss contest among your friends. The busier you are, the more fun you’re having, the more things get done, and the more calories you’ll burn all the time. Eat to lose fat. If you starve yourself, you may lose a considerable amount of weight, but much of it will be lean muscle as well as fat. That’s not good, instead pack these potent, fat burning foods into your nutritional plan: oatmeal, green tea, walnuts, pears, spicy chili peppers (also curry and cayenne pepper), grapefruit, eggs, skim milk, blueberries and salmon. uTom Bonanti is a certified trainer, massage therapist (MA#40258) and fitness writer for Hotspots. ‘U.S. taught Brazil to be gay’ The irrational rantings of
Department actively praises the homosexual abnormality in the international community, is sheer connivance,” writes Severo. Dude, “sheer connivance” pretty much sums up Trump’s entire presidency. He continues, “Homosexuality is a cause of shame and scandals, not pride. Why then
JULIO SEVERO BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI Julio Severo, a Brazilian writer and blogger, is super mad that America taught Brazil to be gay. In a June 12 piece on Barbwire, a website named for its unique ability to make a thinking person’s brain bleed, Severo writes, “The homosexual movement became active in Brazil by direct cultural effect from America, including her politics and Hollywood.” In other words, Brazil would be totally straight if it wasn’t for those meddling American movies and politicians enticing them to the gay side. So you can understand that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who apparently formally recognized June as Pride Month, has made Severo very unhappy. But he’s even madder at President Trump for not publicly speaking out against this heinous crime. “Trump is a man who speaks,” Severo writes, “and does it strongly on strong issues.” Ah, yes. A “man who speaks.” You’ll remember that Trump himself declared that he had “the best words.” I’m not sure what it means to speak “strongly on strong issues,” but we certainly know it doesn’t have anything to do with rational thought or honesty if this “strong” stuff is coming from Trump’s mouth. “[Trump’s] silence while powerful members of his administration promote the homosexual agenda is a strong sign that he approves it and that in due time he will strongly defend the same issues they are defending,” Severo continues. In other words, Trump’s silence is his special, secret way of telling LGBTQ people he loves them. Granted, in just about every way that matters, like by nominating anti-LGBTQ cabinet members and judges, he has given LGBTQ people the finger. But sure, he’s probably gonna marshall a Pride parade any day now. “Trump’s silence, while his State 96 | Hotspots.LGBT
is Trump’s State Department so proud of a LGBT month?” “As a Brazilian conservative evangelical,” Severo writes, “I ask U.S. evangelicals to press the Trump administration to abandon Obama’s homosexual imperialism in the State Department and honor his commitment to his evangelical constituents, who were instrumental for his victory.” Indeed, U.S. evangelicals enthusiastically voted for Trump and continue in large part to support him, which goes to show how morally bankrupt they are. And believe me, U.S. evangelicals have their anti-LGBTQ fingerprints all over this administration and the entire Republican Party. One particularly stubborn fingerprint goes by the name of Mike Pence. “The Trump administration should defend family against predatory homosexuality,” Severo continues, “which is a special threat to children.” No, it isn’t. But you know what’s really a special threat to children? War. Which is why it should worry anyone who claims to care about kids that Trump seems hell bent on weakening the State Department by slashing its budget and leaving a ton of positions unfilled. But where were we? Oh, that’s right, we were discussing how the real problem is that the State Department doesn’t hate gays enough. Got it. (Insert eyeroll, vomiting,
middle finger emojis.)

Revival Pool Party benefits Poverello ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
By Scott Holland
Joe Soler and John Thorpe are presenting Revival Pool Party, a fundraiser for Poverello, this Saturday, July 1 from 1-5 p.m. at Yoga Drive (2554 NE 9th Avenue) in Wilton Manors. We chatted with John to ind out more about this charity event. Q: When did Revival Pool Party start and what was its original purpose? A: In 1995 in Raleigh NC. It was modeled after the party called “Phoenix Rising in Miami that was held after the White and Winter parties. The funds from Revival went to the Duke Infectious Clinic. DJ Buc and Kitty Meow were the artists that performed at the irst Revival in 1995. Q: When did it move to South Florida? A: In the summer of 2014, Joe Soler and I were at a friend's house for a cookout and I told him that I wanted to do a '90s circuit party event that brought back the amazing music from those parties. He contacted Hunter's Night Club and we had the irst Revival in South Florida on Thanksgiving Friday 2014, featuring DJ Robbie Leslie and Kitty Meow. Q: How did you and Joe get involved with Revival? A: I started Revival in 1995 and named it based on the energy that music can do for your soul. Also, being in the South, Revival seemed the appropriate name of the event. I approached Joe in 2014 due to him being a personal friend and the fact that he
104 | Hotspots.LGBT
organizes parties very well. Q: Why did you pick Poverello as the Charity? A: I am a strong supporter that no one should go hungry, especially when they are managing a chronic illness. In addition, I have always respected and appreciated what Father Bill started in the '80s and what the organization continues to do today. I have several friends that are clients of the Poverello Food Bank. Also my husband, Jay Feldman, is on the board of Poverello. Jay and I started an annual Thanksgiving brunch when we moved here in 2007 where guests bring donated food items or donations for Poverello. Last Thanksgiving, due to donations and matching funds, we collected over $11,000 from the one event! Q: Are you excited to have iconic DJ David Knapp as your maestro and, the one and only, Kitty Meow as your hostess? A: Absolutely YES! Joe Soler and I chose the DJs for all Revival South Florida events and David Knapp was my irst choice for this event when we decided to do a pool party. I always enjoyed hearing David play at Amnesia tea dances when I would visit South Beach in the '90s and to have two icons from that era in Miami Beach at this event is very exciting. Tickets for Revival Pool Party are $50 in advance at EventBrite.com or $60 at the door and includes open bar and food.

H
ey Woody, Have you heard about a supplement that’s supposed to make your c-m taste sweet? Is this real or one of those red flags being waved in front of ground-pawing bulls like me looking for the next big thing in sex? —Sweet Tooth
Dear Tooth: I love your bullfighting analogy because that’s exactly what you have to do when you’re faced with the claims of most supplements—fight bull. The latest thing making nostrils flare in horny anticipation is a supplement called “Semenex,” manufactured by MMOR Research. Semenex is a dietary supplement made up of fruits, vegetables, spices, vitamins and minerals. You mix the powder in a glass of water, and voilà, 12 to 24 hours later your semen tastes like a new Ben & Jerry’s flavor. Hey, wait a second, what’s that smell? Check the soles of your shoes, everybody. I think we just stepped on another pile of dietary supplement claims. There is no proof whatsoever that anything can change the taste of your semen. Yes, there are all kind of “experts” claiming you can make your c-m taste better if you do the Hokey Pokey and drink this unpasteurized pineapple juice with that hormonal strawberry. Only doctors with Caribbean medical degrees believe that.
Hey, Woody! If all these drugs are making HIV undetectable in blood tests then why can’t I bareback safely with an HIV-positive guy? I don’t get it. If it’s undetectable, then it’s not there, right? And if it’s not there, why should I use a rubber? —Detect THIS Dear THIS: Undetectable doesn’t mean non-existent. Let’s say you and Mr. He Wants Me But He Doesn’t Know It are leaning against the bar. He turns his back on you and you slip some GHB in his drink. The bartender, who doesn’t give a s--t what people do to each other as long as it doesn’t cut into his tips, immediately comes over, grabs the drink and conducts an on-the-spot test. But the test only measures the active ingredient in GHB to .005 mgs per liter, and you put in .004. The bartender leaves you alone. Does this mean your hatefulness was non-existent? Or undetectable? Same thing with HIV. The hatefulness of this virus can only be measured to a certain threshold. If it dips below this threshold we know it’s still there, it’s just that our instruments aren’t sensitive enough to pick it up. What AIDS experts will not say publicly is that having sex with an HIV-infected man with undetectable levels of HIV in his blood is safer than having sex with one who has detectable levels. So yes, it’s safer. But is it safe? Hardly. For one, HIV strains left in the wake of an onslaught of powerful drug combinations are often drug-resistant. This means that some people with undetectable virus in their blood risk passing on HIV strains that can’t be treated with current drugs. Don’t assume that just because someone’s on a cocktail therapy that they automatically have undetectable levels of HIV in their blood. Studies show that 45-50% have undetectable levels. It could rise to as high as 85% but only if patients take the drugs as prescribed. A good many don’t. If you still want to bareback after what I just said, then stop reading this column, babe.
