irque du Soleil will be performing in Florida in July 2017 with OVO, its newest touring show in arenas. The show will perform in Sunrise at the BB&T Center from July 13-July 23 and in Miami at the Ameican Airlines Arena from July 28-30 as part of a global tour in arenas around North America. Thrilling more than 5 million people worldwide since the show premiered in Montreal in 2009 as a Big Top show, OVO will embark on a new journey, performing the same captivating production, but now in arenas, giving more people the opportunity to enjoy a Cirque du Soleil show in their own town. OVO, meaning “egg” in Portuguese, is a headlong rush into a colorful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement.

8 | Hotspots.LGBT

When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives. It is love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual.

Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 160 million spectators in more than 400 cities on six continents. Cirque du Soleil has close to 4,000 employees, including 1,300 performing artists from close to 50 different countries. It was a pleasure to sit down with the Artistic Director of OVO, Tim Bennett, for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

What was your first job in a theater?

At 19 I was hired to do a dance show at Hershey Park in central PA. It’s a theme park adjacent to the chocolate factory. That was my first professional job.

When did you know Entertainment would be your career?

I always did school plays growing up, but when I was in junior high school I started to feel the very strong urge to go into acting. The summer after I graduated from Junior High I went to NYC (first time) and saw my first Broadway show – the original production of Chicago. I was so impressed and inspired by it, that I decided there was nothing else that would fulfill me as much as working as an actor.

When you were acting, what was your favorite part(s)?

I’ve always loved farces – classic 5 door farces with fast paced action, mistaken identities, chases, slamming doors, bad puns, and girls in their underwear. There was a farce called Scapino that was a modern day telling of an old Moliere play. Jim Dale had done it on Broadway back in the 1970s. I had the opportunity to play the title role and had more fun with it than any other role that I’ve ever done.

You have also directed many shows, other than Cirque, which was your favorite(s)?

I have two – because they were very different jobs. The first is The Lion King, where I was the Resident Director of the Las Vegas company. I enjoyed working on Lion King more than any other show. I love the story and its universal message, the music, and the many styles of storytelling – from puppetry, shadow play, clowning, modern dance, praise poetry, and classic musical theatre. We also had a wonderful cast of Broadway veterans, who were amazing artists. Being able to work on that show was a real gift.

Hotspots.LGBT | 9

But I didn’t create Lion King, as Resident Director I maintained it. As an original director/choreographer, my favorite show was Urinetown. I love the story and message of it, as well as the very farcical playful way that it is written. I also love the opportunity as a choreographer, to create material that pays homage to (some say parodies) other classic musicals and their styles.

How did you come to get hired by Cirque?

I saw my first Cirque show, NouvelleExperience, on the Santa Monica Pier back in the early 1990’s and absolutely fell in love with it. The wild imagination that spawned the costumes, music, make-up, and Cirque environment, as well as the incredible acrobatics blew my mind. I thought that it was one of the most creative shows that I had ever seen, and thought to myself “I really want to work with this new company Cirque du Soleil.” At the time, I was still a performer but I had no acrobatic skills, so there wasn’t a place for me. Fast forward a few years to when I moved to Las Vegas with The Lion King,. There I was surrounded by Cirque shows, and I went to see every one of them. My passion to work for Cirque was reignited. My job at The Lion King, was very similar to what I do for Cirque, and when The Lion King, eventually closed, I reached out to Cirque right away.

10 | Hotspots.LGBT

Your title is Artistic Director. What exactly does that entail?

I’m responsible for the artistic integrity of the show. My job is make sure that the show is as exciting, surprising, fresh, and looks as great as it did on the day that it opened. I’m also responsible to maintain the original director’s vision of the show. I do whatever is necessary to make sure that happens. I run rehearsals, work with the coaches in trainings, cast and integrate new artists, work with the Performance Medicene teams to keep the acrobats healthy and rehabilitate injuries, give notes on the shows to artists and the technical departments, add new acts or change existing ones, and coordinate with the PR teams to create events. I also do a lot of operations work from budgeting to scheduling, to casting, and long range planning for the show.

I’m not going to ask you what your favorite part of OVO is as I think that would be unfair, but is there a particular act that gets talked about more than the rest? We have a few unique acts that come up a lot in conversation because they aren’t seen a lot of places, or because our particular take on them is different and special. We have a Chinese “foot juggling” act that most people haven’t ever seen before. It’s a team of 6 Chinese acrobat Ants who juggle various

pieces of their “food” and then eventually each other…with their feet. We have an act that is a combination of trampoline and a crazy huge climbing wall – the biggest of it’s kind. Since circkets can jump 300 times their body height, we have our crickets jumping, bouncing, and leaping all over the wall via the trampolines. Finally, we have a straps act where our two butterflies soar and dance at the top of the arena in what is the most beautiful and exciting love duet that I’ve ever seen. Audience members always comment about it.

What Makes OVO special, and what should the South Florida audiences expect from OVO?

There are a number of things that make OVO unique. It is one of the most playful, colorful, positive, and energetic of Cirque’s shows. It also has a great Brazilian flavor - from its samba music to its characters, to its name (OVO is Portuguese for “egg.”) We also have some of the top circus artists in the world, working alongside Olympic gymnasts and world champion acrobats in some acts that are pretty unique. It’s not a Cirque show that you’ve ever seen before. But I think what makes it the most special

is its message. It’s a story of inclusion, and how a community of insects first reject a “Foreigner” insect because he is different from them. They don’t understand him or his ways and therefore they are threatened by him. Over the course of the story, they realize that they and the stranger are more alike than they are different, and they come to understand and eventually accept and even love him. What I really love is that OVO is a wonderful representation of the culture and world of Cirque du Soleil itself. Inclusion is one of the greatest strengths at Cirque. Our production consists of a troupe of over 100 artists, technicians, and staff from 21 different countries working together as story tellers to amaze and delight audiences. We are a mix of many languages, skin colors, religions, and cultures – French, Russian, American, Ukranian, Brazilian, British…and many more. We work as a team without regard to politics or borders, and the trust between us has to be uncompromising. If we can all work together at the circus to do what we do, there is no reason why others around the world can’t do the same.

Tickets which start at $35 for adults (subject to change) and $25 for children. Senior, military, student discounts and family 4-packs are all available at cirquedusoleil.com/ovo

surprised to know about you. A: I have social anxiety and I don’t like to be in large crowds. I love the attention from afar. I have to force myself to be a people person and to be ok with crowds. Q: What does the future hold for Trinity and for Ryan? A: I think they go hand in hand. I want to be a business person who wants to be successful in what they do. I am working on doing more TV, my YouTube channel, and I don’t want to put limits on what I want Trinity to do. Ryan just wants buy a house, continue my relationship and be happy!

For more information on Trinity, go to her website at: TrinityTheTuck. com or visit her on social media at: Facebook.com or Instagram.com/ TrinityTheTuck.

two times I wasn’t even contacted. The third time I got contacted, but they told me not to get my hopes up high. When I got the call I was chosen I was in total shock! Q: Tell us about your RuPaul’s Drag Race experience? A: The experience is not anything you can prepare for. It’s nothing like you think it is. It was extremely hard, but I had a phenomenal time. It really is a race. You have such limited amounts of time and resources, and you have to think on your feet. It was a great experience and I would totally do it again! Q: Did you think you were going to win? A: We were still under the impression that there would be another episode and they would be another elimination. I thought I had a chance of winning, but everyone else was so good. Q: If you couldn’t win, who would you have wanted to win? A: I would say Shea because I’m a pageant girl and pageants are all about rules and formats. Since she had the most wins, I would have picked her. Q: Your drag daddy, Bob Taylor, is my brother from another mother. Tell me about your drag family and how important it is in your life? A: I love my daddy Bob. I was raised by my grandparents and they both passed away by my early twenties. I met Bob when I was going on 21 and he instantly became a father figure. You choose your drag family, and it’s very important to have those people in your life as a support system. They are my family! If it wasn’t for Bob, I wouldn’t be the business person I am now. [Interesting fact: Trinity’s drag father and her biological grandfather who raised her are both named Bob Taylor!] Q: It seems to all of us that you really grew and changed on the show. Can you comment on that? A: The entire show was filmed within a month and a half, and the audience and judges saw growth from the season. I feel like I was the same entertainer, but what did change was my perception of drag. It was a life lesson and it opened my mind to different types of drag, which I had never seen before. My mentality has changed. Q: Tell us something people would be

arlier this spring I attended the OUTshine LGBT film festival in Miami, and throughout the 10-day indie-flick extravaganza I caught a number of powerful, relatable and touching movies from across the globe. I particularly enjoyed The Lavender Scare, a documentary about the U.S. government’s mid-century crusade to expose and expunge homosexuals from its ranks; Handsome Devil (now available on VOD), an Irish coming-ofage high-school drama about homophobia in sports; and Heartstone, a beautifully shot and performed Icelandic film steeped in the confusion of blossoming adolescent sexuality. The one screening that really captivated me during the festival, however, was FrenchCanadian film 1:54, from director Yan England. I barely made it through the first act before the ugly-sobs started (and they continued throughout the film), and if you have any emotions at all, I doubt you will either. You may find it difficult to track down 1:54 for home viewing – it wasn’t released theatrically in the United States – but it’s worth the search. Here are four reasons why:

{1} 1:54 is the debut long-feature film of Academy Award-nominated director Yan England

44 | Hotspots.LGBT

England’s French-language short film Henry, released in 2012, was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 85th Academy Awards in 2013 (you can watch it in its entirety on YouTube), and the accolades continued (despite not winning the golden statuette for Henry) for his debut longfeature film 1:54 on the festival circuit last year. The film took home the prize for Best Student Film at the Québec City Film Festival last year (the film’s star Antoine-Olivier Pilon also won the award for Best Actor at QCFF), as well as the Public Prix – a viewers’ choice award – at the 19th Prix Iris, which recognizes the talent and achievement in Québec cinema.

{2} It’s not just a gay film – it’s a psychological cyber-bullying narrative that’ll leave you in shambles

At the heart of the story is how two best friends come to terms with their sexual orientation, one of whom has accepted that he’s gay while the other is still very early in the process. It doesn’t help matters, of course, that there are bullies at school with mobile cameras that are itching to catch them in compromising positions so they can blackmail them into submission. While there’s an overarching LGBT element to 1:54, the elephant-sized message that you’ll take away from it is that there are plenty of bad people in the world who don’t care if you live or die, and the authority of technology is a powerful tool of oppression and persuasion that spins wildly out of control when in the wrong hands. The acting is so well delivered here that it’ll bring back memories of your own bullying (if you were unlucky enough to endure it), via social media or otherwise, and it’s likely you won’t be able to contain your emotions.

For today’s children, even elementaryschool-aged kids, there is no respite from the pain and torment if you have Facebook, Instagram or Twitter accounts. 1:54 captures this reality with such accuracy and heartache – for everyone involved in the situations; yes, even the bullies – that Canadian schools are considering the film as required viewing for students across the country.

{4} Many viewers of a certain age just won’t ‘get it’ – and that’s a problem

{3} It paints an accurate picture of how social media affects adolescents, with sometimesirreversible consequences Kids do stupid things; always have, always will. But what 1:54 strives to impress upon you is that bullying isn’t what it used to be. It’s high-tech now, and it follows you wherever you go. Before social media became popular in the early aughts, you got bullied at school, sometimes on the walk home, but once you were inside the comfort of your home, you were safe – at least until the next day. In hindsight, those were the good times.

Kids, particularly those in high school, shouldn’t have access to social media. You need to be of strong mind and body to navigate the often-malignant rhetoric and taunting that’s unleashed on social media, especially if it’s unrelentingly directed toward you, and I don’t believe anyone under age 25 has that capacity. But that’s an argument for another day. What I heard in the theater as I sat in my seat long after the credits rolled – to compose myself after all the bawling – was a rather blasé attitude toward the subject matter from most of the audience over age 40. They just didn’t get it, and that’s because they didn’t come of age in a world where social media ruled.

Having myself mourned the death of boyfriends and best friends who have taken their own lives because they couldn’t escape the bullying, I can understand how suicide seems like the only escape. I don’t advocate it, but I do understand how it can seem like the last resort in order to free oneself – and as a society we need to take this issue far more seriously. Many of us, at this point in our lives, have endured the nasty underbelly of social media – though maybe not in a bullying capacity – and we know how damaging it can be. Which is why it’s high time that we have a proactive conversation on how to best protect ourselves and our children so their final act isn’t physically harming themselves or others. Personally, I find little joy in social media anymore, though I’m still an avid (and likely addicted) user, and I certainly wouldn’t weep if the power is cut one day. Until then, I’ll reserve my tears for all the people who

ore than a million people flooded Madrid amid tight security last weekend for WorldPride 2017, which for the first time combined WorldPride and EuroPride with Madrid Pride going along for the ride, effectively making it a Pride trifecta. The festivities lasted 10 days, ending on July 2, with the passing of the baton to New York City, which will host WorldPride 2019, during the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. The closing ceremony also included a memorial tribute to rainbow flag creator Gilbert Baker, who died in March. The WorldPride parade began on July

1, at 5 p.m. and didn’t conclude until after midnight. Organizers had expected as many as three million people would attend at least some of the 10-day celebration. Two TV stations broadcast the entire parade live. Local media reported that 1.5 million turned out to watch or participate in the parade. Tourists from all over the world attended the celebration. The chance to capitalize on LGBT travel was not lost on tourism officials who hoped Pride would encourage more tourists to return to Madrid and other parts of Spain. Madrid more than lives up to its claim as

one of the world’s most gay-welcoming cities. “This is not just a gay-friendly city, we are a gay city and we are very proud of that,” said Miguel Sanz, the openly gay director of Madrid’s tourism bureau. Sanz spoke before a press conference with LGBT journalists from the U.S., Canada, Latin America, Australia and other parts of Europe. He presented a promotional video showing male and female same-sex couples enjoying the city. The tourism chief also reiterated the city’s slogan, “Whoever you love, Madrid loves you.” The press briefing was held in the tourism office in the historic Plaza Mayor, which was adorned with that slogan on a

banner in English and Spanish. The plaza is celebrating its 400-year birthday this year. Sanz noted that the city’s gay friendliness extended even to the city’s traffic signals. Madrid installed pedestrian walk/don’t walk sign that depicted same-sex couples walking hand-in-hand at 72 intersections around the city. Those signs went up in advance of Pride in early June and the city plans to keep them up. A 2013 Pew Research study backs Spain’s claim to gay-friendliness. It scored the highest among 39 countries surveyed on whether homosexuality should be accepted by society. The survey found 88% acceptance of gays in Spain. That is contrasted by the U.S.

with 60% gay acceptance and, at the bottom of the survey, Jordan, Egypt, Indonesia, and Ghana who all tied for last place at 3%. Spain experienced one of the most dramatic changes in LGBT tolerance in the years following the death of the country’s longtime dictator, Francisco Franco, in 1975. Franco’s regime routinely imprisoned gays. Spain’s first gay pride

march was held in Barcelona in 1977 and, a year later, in Madrid. But homosexuality wasn’t legalized until 1979. Spain eventually more than made up for lost time when it became the third country in the world to legalize gay marriage in 2005. In time for WorldPride, the city’s landmark CentroCentro Palacio de Cibeles building included a floor dedicated to the country’s LGBT history. Exhibits include photos of some of the early marches, as well as mug shots of people arrested for being gay, and even a shock-therapy machine designed to “cure” people of homosexuality. Many of WorldPride’s events were held in Madrid’s gay neighborhood, Chueca, which evolved along with Spain’s acceptance. In the late 1970s, it was a downtrodden area best known as the place in the city to buy drugs. Gay entrepreneurs took advantage of the cheap real estate there opening the first gay businesses in 1980. Others soon followed and today it is one of the city’s most attractive neighborhoods. Chueca is also a favorite spot for tourists because of its wealth of restaurants and shops just north of the city’s old historic center. WorldPride’s nine venues were spread out throughout the city. Three were in and around the Chueca gayborhood. Some of Madrid’s famed landmarks served as backdrops for the eclectic entertainment presented throughout the 10-day celebration. American entertainers included Ultra Nate known for her LGBT anthem, “Free,” and the Weather Girls, who of course, delighted the crowd with “It’s Raining Men.” Austrian Eurovision gender-bender star Conchita Wurst was another crowd favorite. But WorldPride was not all entertainment. It included a threeday international human rights

summit that brought together more than 200 activists, politicians and leaders in the fields of education and culture. It is the first time that a Spanish-speaking country hosted WorldPride and the summit put a focus on LGBT rights in Latin American and its close continental neighbor, Africa. A separate conference was held over the same three days at the University Autonoma de Madrid to focus on HIV in the LGBT community with panelists who discussed treatment and prevention strategies. Organizers said they expected WorldPride would generate about 110 million euros in economic activity in Madrid during a traditionally slow time for tourism. But the city also returned much of that money in security and cleanup costs. Madrid brought in extra police and sealed off the streets around entertainment venues as well as the parade on Saturday. Patrol cars were set up in the roads around the Pride celebrations to prevent vehicles from being used by terrorists as has been seen most recently in Paris and London. Participants were searched before entering venues. Glass bottles or anything that could be used as a weapon were not permitted inside. Just two days before WorldPride began, Spanish authorities arrested three men suspected of jihadist terrorist activity. WorldPride ended at midnight on Sunday, July 2, with a ceremony at which New York City officials who were officially passed the baton of WorldPride. The city was chosen in large part because 2019 will mark 50 years since the city’s Stonewall riots which symbolized a turning point for many in the gay rights movement. The late Gilbert Baker was honored for creating the rainbow flag that has been universally adopted as a symbol for LGBT rights and unity.

If you saw the comedy Rough Night, but still think you don't know who Colton Haynes is, think again: He was the freaked-out stripper in the thong. And now that you've made his acquaintance, you can look forward to his next job, costarring in season 7 of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's American Horror Story. It's under wraps at the moment, but we do know that the upcoming season centers around the aftermath of the 2016 Presidential election, with the horror starting on the day after That Man won. (We still refuse to write out his full name and will probably never – what if a demon infects our laptop?) Other cast Colton Haynes / American Horror Story

EVERY DAY WILL BE SORT OF GAY The popular YA novel Every Day, from author David Levithan, is coming to the big screen. Gay filmmaker Michael Sucsy (Grey Gardens) will direct from a script from Jesse Andrews (Me and Earl and The Dying Girl). Up-andcomer Angourie Rice – who played Ryan Gosling's precocious daughter in The Nice Guys and will earn a wider audience this summer with Spider-Man: Homecoming – will star. But it's not the fact that a gay director is at the helm that makes this story interesting. Every Day is a story that

involves its young heroine falling in love with a supernatural entity called “A.” This entity moves into a fresh host body, sometimes male and sometimes female, each new day. In other words, Rice's teenage protagonist will be getting a crash course in gender fluidity, bisexuality and speed dating all at once. We're interested, and we hear this one will most likely move into host theaters sometime in 2018.

CHRIS COLFER DOES EVERYTHING AT ONCE NOW It's entirely possible that the last you heard from Chris Colfer was during the series finale of Glee. Well, guess what? The boy – OK, man; he's 27 after all — hasn't been sitting around waiting for his next gig. He's been getting his life. Colfer is the author of a series of fantasy books known as The Land of Stories, a saga that spans six novels, an illustrated picture book,

audiobooks and an upcoming graphic novel. Not content simply to be an actor, singer and best-selling author, he's now signed a deal with 20th Century Fox and producer Shawn Levy to take the first of those books to the big screen. It's called The Wishing Spell, and it's about twin boys who find themselves transported into a world where classic fairy tales come to life. Colfer will not only adapt his own book into a screenplay, he's also going to direct the movie. Feeling somewhat less than accomplished right now? Perhaps you should. And maybe his old boss Ryan Murphy will be asking him to collaborate one day.

FISH: A NUTRITIONAL GIFT From the

Sea!

86 | Hotspots.LGBT

By Tom Bonanti

Athletes and bodybuilders concerned about getting enough protein often grab first for chicken breasts and lean beef, leaving fish to flounder in their nutritional regiments. Actually, fish should be an essential part of everyone’s diet because it’s loaded with protein, minerals, and the world’s healthiest fat. Let’s look at this gift

from the sea and how eating fish can leave you with bigger muscles and a healthier heart. While it may be necessary to trim the fat from your beef, pork or chicken, with fish, the fattier the better. Fatty fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel are the only reliable sources of eicosapentanoic acid (epa), and docosohexanoic acid (dha), two important omega-3 fatty acids with a broad range of health benefits. Both of these omega3’s help to lower blood triglyceride levels making fish a heart healthy choice in anyone’s diet. As an added benefit for those who work out, fish fat may also help to reduce the residual muscle soreness that accompanies working out.

As a protein source, fish are an excellent choice. Most fish have a superb protein- tofat ratio which will keep you in an anabolic state – key to muscle growth. Whenever possible it’s great to eat whole food protein an hour or two before your workout and certainly within an hour following your workout. Fish is digested and absorbed faster than beef, pork or chicken, and its amino acid profile makes it useful in muscle recovery as well as building mass. Besides containing omega-3 fatty acids and being an invaluable source of protein, there’s more great news about fish! The iron in fish helps to carry oxygen to your working muscles; vitamin B6 assists in red blood cell formation; selenium can keep your prostate healthy; zinc will boost your testosterone level. The down side to fish is that it often contains mercury. In general, the larger the fish, and the longer it’s lifespan, the more Hg it is likely to contain. Shark, tuna, swordfish, king mackerel, grouper and sea bass can accumulate plenty of mercury. Salmon, catfish, shellfish, pacific halibut, sardines, tilapia and rainbow trout are safer options. Here are some healthy hints about cooking fish. A good filet will be odorless. Handle your fish as little as possible. Let it cook undisturbed for a few minutes and turn only once during cooking. This allows for browning of proteins on the surface which contributes to its flavor. When it comes to seasoning, a good quality sea salt and pepper rub is all that a filet really needs. If you marinate, do so only for 30 minutes. Fish is more tender and porous than meat, so it requires less time to soak up the flavor. Over cooking any food can rob it of important nutrients and vitamins. uFor more nutritional tips to help your workouts or to inquire about his training and massage services, contact TrainerTomB@aol. com.

KAREN HANDEL AND THE GAY FERRIS WHEEL BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI

nother day, another truly terrible person elected to Congress. America is on a roll when it comes to voting for people who are the worst. As I write this I’m in Chicago with my family during Pride. The Navy Pier Ferris wheel is lit up in rainbow colors. In fact, when my 7-year-old son saw it he cried, “Look! A gay Ferris wheel!” We also saw cars with rainbow flags waving out their windows as I drove down the freeway. It’s a happy time. Or at least it should be. Sadly, I can’t help think about Georgia’s newly elected Republican congresswoman Karen Handel. She beat the much better human being Jon Ossoff, a Democrat, but not by much. While some are pointing at Ossoff’s defeat and saying it’s proof the Democratic Party is dead and that Nancy Pelosi should be buried along with it, that’s stupid and short-sighted. America deserves better than that. Okay, but why am I thinking of Handel as I gaze upon the gay Ferris wheel? Back in 2003, according to Think Progress, Handel was a little more gay friendly. Or at least appeared so. The Log Cabin

Republicans threw their support behind her because she appeared to think domestic partner benefits were not the work of Satan (LCR’s standards are not high). But no more! In 2010 she told a local Georgia news station that she not only didn’t know any gay couples with children, but that she said that a same-sex couple raising a kid “is not the best household for a child.” When asked why she thought “gay parents aren’t as legitimate as heterosexual parents” she answered, “Because I don’t.” Well, then. But that was seven years ago! Surely she’s come around since then, right? Ha. No. In June she was again asked about samesex couples adopting and she said she still opposed it because of “her faith.” “My faith at the same time calls me to be compassionate and what I have always believed is that what has to be paramount is what is the best interest of the child,” she told The Reporter Newspapers. But what does that mean, “best interest of the child?” Surely Handel can be more specific? “The best interest of the child. Period, end of paragraph,” she said. “That’s not for you to decide. That’s not for me to decide. It’s

In 2010 she told a local Georgia news station that she not only didn’t know any gay couples with children, but that she said that a same-sex couple raising a kid “is not the best household for a child. for the child advocates to decide, whether that be the court or the child’s guardian. The child’s best interest must be paramount.” Got it. The best interest of the child is some impossible to define thing that only “The Child Advocates” (which sounds like a group from the Handmaid’s Tale) can dictate. Well, I’ll tell you what. I sure as hell am an advocate for my child, and I don’t take kindly to anyone claiming that my wife and I are unfit parents. I especially loathe the fact that Handel is joining the anti-LGBT scum that is creeping across D.C. It’s hard not to feel hopeless. To look at the anti-LGBT backlash across the country and feel exhausted and want to give up. Or just ignore

the news and watch nothing but RuPaul’s Drag Race (everything in moderation, dears). But then I look up and see a gay Ferris wheel shining in the night sky and my son in the back seat declaring that “today was one of the funnest days of my life.” And I know that love will win. It’s going to be a bumpy ride, and oh, it’s going to hurt sometimes. But love will win. D’Anne Witkowski is a poet, writer and comedian living in Michigan with her wife and son. NEED WOOD

By Woody Miller

IS THIS A “CRIMINAL MINDS” EPISODE?

H

ey Woody! One day I came home early and snuck upstairs hoping to catch my boyfriend beating off to internet p-rn (he’s a freak about it). I tiptoe in but he hears me before I reached the computer screen and he goes berserk, yelling and screaming at me to leave the room. That’s when I realize he’s trying to block me from seeing the screen. Suddenly a chill runs through me, and I tell him to move away from the computer. He refuses. I figure it’s kiddy p-rn and I go nuts, pushing him aside so I could see. Well, Woody, nothing could have prepared me for what was on the screen. It wasn’t kiddy p-rn he was beating off to. It was pictures of a corpse. They were police shots of a bloated, purple body. I hit the back button on the browser and there were pictures of charred burn victims and men covered in bloody gun shot wounds. I walked out and haven’t talked to my boyfriend since. Please don’t print the site, since I don’t want to give them any publicity. What should I do, Woody? He’s sick and I refuse to talk to him. Yet I miss him. Help me. --- Broken-up by the Web

y Dear Broken-up: Your boyfriend has a fetish, and a ghoulish one at that. There are only four words to describe the site: HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. It is without doubt, the darkest, deepest, most sordid site on the web. I mean, other than

heterosexual p-rn sites. Talk about gross! Rotten.com states that it wants to “present viewers with a truly unpleasant experience.” Experts believe there’s *very* little chance of that happening but you’d have to be a fool not to consider it. It’s reasonable to be scared about this. But know this: the majority of people with socially unacceptable fantasies do not act them out. Either because it’s physically or because the fantasizer himself doesn’t want it to become a reality. Being raped, for example, is a recurring fantasy that most people don’t want to actually experience. And finally, most people don’t act out unacceptable fantasies because the consequences are too severe---jail, death, having to cook breakfast for the guy you put in a coma the night before, etc. My question to you is how well the relationship was going before your discovery. Was sex good? Were you getting along? Was your emotional connection strong? I suspect it was. And in that case, his fantasies didn’t create problems in your relationship. Your discovery of them did. A fetish, no matter how ghoulish, is not considered a problem unless it becomes a problem. Capiche? Your boyfriend isn’t a horrible person for having horrible fantasies. He’s deserving of compassion. I hope you can find it within you to help him get help.
