KIDD MADONNY Q: When did you realize you wanted to be a DJ? A: When I was performing (Kidd was part of the RKM Duo) at Twilo in the late 90s for Junior Vasquez. I love to watch him spin in the booth. He would layer tracks over tracks and work the crowd to a frenzy for hours. That's when I fell in love with house music and DJing. Junior and Jerome from Junior Vasquez gave me my first turntable. Q: Where are you from? A: I was born and raised in Miami. I'm proud 8 | Hotspots.LGBT

of my hometown and represent my city when I travel for my gigs! Q: What was your first residency, and how did that feel? A: My first residency was in 2007 for Click Sunday's. I was so excited, but nervous. Q: What separates you from other DJs? A: I give it 300% at all my gigs, and I treat each gig like an event. Of course, the music is priority, but I like to take it to the next level with designing my visuals, costumes, lights, decor and production. When I have all these elements, Continued on page 10

I give it 300% at all my gigs, and I treat each gig like an event.” the music can take you on an everlasting journey. Q: What are some memorable moments from the DJ booth? A: There have been so many memorable moments! This past New Year's Eve DJing in Australia was amazing. In addition, I think every gay pride event I have DJ'd for (around the world) has this love and magical feel in the air. I get a bit emotional during these gigs, because I am so happy to see how far we have come in our gay community. Being a proud married gay man makes me feel extremely happy! Q: Other than DJing, what do you like to do for fun? A: I like going to the movies, bowling, hitting the gym, and just cuddling on the couch with my hubby and our animals (dog and cat) Q: Describe yourself in three words… A: Happy, spontaneous and fun loving Q: What does the future hold for you? A: Lots of traveling for gigs, and I am in the middle of working with other DJ/producers on a project with this new artist remix album. 10 | Hotspots.LGBT

Hmmm…

SPERM COUNT DOWN

Alarming news for men in North America, Europe and New Zealand: Your sperm count is dropping rapidly and no one knows why. Analysis on the sperm counts of almost 43,000 men between 1973 and 2011 found a decline in the sperm count of 50-60% in men from North America, Europe and New Zealand – but no decline in men from Asia, Africa and South America. The study by Hebrew University of Jerusalem has led to conjecture by the scientific community that the reason in environmental: the male fetus is believed to be particularly susceptible to pollutants which affects the child in later life.

EAT UP AND GET OUT MORE A new study on loneliness has found that loneliness can kill you faster than obesity. “Being connected to others socially is widely considered a fundamental human need – crucial to both well-being and survival,” said lead author of the study Dr. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, Professor of Psychology at Brigham Young University, Utah. While obesity increases your chances of a premature death by 30%, loneliness can increase it by 50%, the study reported. “There is robust evidence that social isolation and loneliness significantly increase risk of premature mortality,” said Dr. Holt-Lunstad. 32 | Hotspots.LGBT

GUN SALES DROP SHARPLY

Hilton Hotel heiress Paris Hilton recent went with some friends to a trendy nightclub in New York City called Marquee. Their tab for the evening after ordering rounds of giant $100,000 bottles of champagne? A cool $230,000! Paris left the waiter a tip for $47,000.

After record gun sales in 2016 – apparently in anticipation of Hilary Clinton becoming President and placing restriction of gun sales – there has been a sharp decline in sales in 2017. Fortune.com reports that U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation background checks in July 2017 fell 25% to 907,348, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation. The report said that was the worst year-over-year decline in background checks since November 2013, a year after Democratic President Barack Obama won his second election. Applications for permits requiring background checks is a barometer for gun sales whose figures manufacturers do not reveal.

INTERVIEW | Patti LaBelle

PATTI'S STILL GOT IT! Patti LaBelle dishes on 'still standing' thanks to the LGBT community, lip-syncing 'divettes' and Trump

I

s there a singer more real than Patti LaBelle? The 73-year-old legend of song (and shade) is a irehose of strong-minded opinions, and in an age that has some tight-lipped “divettes,” as LaBelle calls them, refraining from saying “too” much, the ever-honest LaBelle is, refreshingly, that rare freewheeler who revels in being blunt AF. In 2014, she told me she no longer considers herself a diva because “all these little heifers who can't sing are called divas.” The word, she observed, is not “cute anymore.” Now, after our recent warm phone reunion while doing promo for her new jazz album, Bel Hommage, she who has given the gays so much, from music and pies to a bevy of side-eye-serving GIFs, still

40 | Hotspots.LGBT

has more to give – even her own precious piemaking time. “I really like talking to you,” she tells me when I start to wrap the interview. My allotted time has long passed, but she's not done. And by the end of our 25-minute interview we've covered generous ground: why she's “still standing” thanks to the LGBT community, President “Trumpette” and his Twitter-proposed ban on transgender people in the military, her music-biz foes (and how Aretha Franklin is not one of them) and how you “may see me as a diva and that's a compliment to those who think it's a compliment.” Q: Last time we had a gay press chat it was shortly before you had me twerkin' on

your stage here in Detroit. I still can't believe you let me do that. What's the craziest thing a gay fan has done on your stage? A: Gosh, I don't really know! Maybe you! I know I've had a lot of gay men on my stage during Lady Marmalade and they go way out because once they're up there they say, “I'm here with Ms. Patti's microphone and I'm gonna wear it out.” I've had so many do so many things that I can't tell you speci ically one. Q : I don't know if he was gay, but in Vancouver last year, a fan got frisky on your stage and... A: Showed me his ass?

Q: Is that what he did? A: Yeah! He mooned me! Because he came up and I was looking at him through the whole show and I said, “Oh, he's an enthusiastic fan,” right? I try to look at the people that I'm gonna bring up, so I brought him up thinkin' he was cool. He did his little shake and then turned around and pulled his pants down. I had on high pumps. I kicked that ass.

Q: You even called him a “bitch.” A: I did! I did use a curse word. And I felt so bad. He took me to that limit. I said, “How could he take me there?” And they had it on TMZ or whatever. I said, “It's true.” Gotta protect myself. (Laughs)

Q: I was happy to see that you did NYC Pride this summer. Is there something special about performing for an all-gay audience? A: That night it poured, so when Deborah Cox was on she did three songs and then had to be rushed off the stage. It could've been shut down 'cause it was so bad. Everybody got drenched. So instead of my going on at 9, I went on at about 10:15... and they were still there!

My whole thing is, when I knew I was doing gay Pride, I said, 'I'm gonna wear something beautifully outrageous, and I'm gonna have that old Patti LaBelle hair that I used to do with the fans and all that jazz. I said, I'm gonna wear that hair! And from the time I went on until the end, they never stopped yelling for more. I mean, when we were pulling out in our car, they were still, “More, more, more!” They were so enthusiastic. But what I did: I wore that old hair, and a lot of people who didn't know me from the '80s – we got some bad press for it – and I said, “You know what, I did that for my queens. They understand it.” It was for you guys. But I enjoyed doing it. And then the wind knocked that sucker

...but a singer is a person who goes out there and throws down. Just get on a microphone and sing. Phyllis Hyman was that girl.” down. I said, “OK, I'm gonna have to kick it up.” (Laughs)

Q: Ha! Who would give Patti LaBelle crap for her hair? A: People who didn't really understand where I was in the '80s. You know, some of

Hotspots.LGBT | 41

the younger kids – they don't have a clue who Patti LaBelle or Labelle was. Q: So what do they know you for? A: I have no clue.

Q: I'm thinking, “But that is part of your legacy.” A: Yeah, they're Patti latecomers.

Q: Speaking of Deborah Cox, a lot of people don't know that Montell Jordan wrote “Nobody's Supposed to Be Here,” but you didn't love it and then it went to Deborah… A: Deborah always says I'm her reason for being in show business because I let the song go and she got it. That's her start. After that, I started performing that song at my show and told the audience, “This is the song that got away.” But I'm happy it did because I love her.

Q: Have you given up a lot of songs that became hits? A: Right?! Well, this is the irst time for me. But I'll know the next time to hold onto something that sounds halfway decent.

Q: I read Hello, Dolly! came your way years ago, before it hit Broadway, but that you passed on it. When the role ultimately went to Bette Midler, were you kicking yourself for not jumping at

the chance? A: Nope, I didn't. 'Cause you know what: That's a big piece of work and I think Bette Midler can do it much better than Patti LaBelle. I thought about it after she did it. Might I do it in the future? You never know.

Q: Do you pay attention to the memes and GIFs of you throwing shade that people love to share on the internet? A: Yeah, I see them. And you know what, I'm honored! (Laughs) And whenever I see something that's not totally positive about me, I say, 'God, at least they thought about me.' It's really the way to look at these situations. But at the end of the day I know who I really am… and that's a cool chick! (Laughs)

Q: Has your son given up on keeping what you say in check? A: Well, he tries. Lately, he hasn't had to because I've not been saying anything out of order. But I know he's always waiting and when I do he'll take me to the side: “Mom, could you not say that ever again?” I say, “OK.” Something happened about two weeks ago and I'm trying to remember what it was. This time it was about… God, what did I do? I'm always doin' something and he's always reprimanding me for it.

Q: Do you ever regret things that you say? A: My God, about 50 million things. I'm full of regrets. But you know what, I'm honest. So it will come out and I'll say, 'God, I didn't mean

I'm not gonna be pitted against any lady in this industry. I do my job, I sing hard and I sing well, and I love what I do.” 42 | Hotspots.LGBT

to say that.' But it's too late. And I'm not gonna whoop myself up for it. I did it and I'll do it again. I know I'll do it! I do have my little cop son watching me, so I try to be nice.

Q: Three years ago you told me you don't call yourself a diva because “all these little heifers who can't sing are called divas.” But then, after that interview, you did VH1's Divas Holiday: Unsilent Night last year and then Daytime Divas this year. Now, Ms. Patti, I feel like you're sending me mixed signals here. A: (Laughs) No – no, mixed signals! If I do Daytime Divas, which I did, and if I did Divas the concert, of course, I'm gonna be in it, but I'm not saying, “I'm a diva.” People look to me and may see me as a diva and that's a compliment to those who think it's a compliment. Like I said, Lena Horne and Dinah Washington and all those beautiful dolls back in the day, they were divas. These little divettes walking around – I don't wanna put myself in the same sentence with some of these little kids. So, I'm not a diva; just a singin' fool.

Q: People are under the impression there's rivalry between you and Aretha Franklin, but you recently quashed that rumor when you said, of anyone, you'd most want to duet with her. Why do people think you had a beef? And what's the deal with women constantly being pitted against each other? A: I'm not gonna be pitted against any lady in this industry. I do my job, I sing hard and I sing well, and I love what I do. If another lady inds that as being too much for them, or whoever might feel I'm being too much, that's their problem. But I've never had beef. Now, there are a lot of ladies in this industry who don't care for Patti LaBelle – and some gentleman, also – but I look at them and I smile. Because what can I do? I can't change your mind, boo, because I don't wanna change your mind. You go on thinkin' about me the way you think. No – but I haven't had beef with anyone. I've had a lot of dislikes. But I pay no mind. I keep moving and I don't stop to talk about the ones who talk about me.

Q: Let's talk about food. You know how people say gays don't eat carbs? A : Gays don't eat carbs – who said that?! Every gay guy I know, they eat carbs. (Laughs)

Q: And they eat your pies? A: They eat my pies, honey! And my peach cobbler. You have to go to Walmart, or I'll have to come and make you one personally. One more thing about food: I start taping my cooking show soon and Laverne Cox is one of my cooking buddies.

Q: Regarding Bel Hommage: If there's ever an album that pays homage to you the way you pay homage to artists such as Nina Simone and Frank Sinatra on this album, who would get your blessing to cover your songs? A: Oh, I would give Fantasia blessings. And Ledisi. The little singing girls. The ones who can really, really sing.

Q: What does it mean to you to be able to “really, really sing”? A: Someone who can sing without someone in the studio tweaking what they just sang because it was so lat or whatever. Sing straight out in the studio, record without all those little gimmicks. Some of them are lucky because they end up selling a lot of music, but a singer is a person who goes out there and throws down. Just get on a microphone and sing. Phyllis Hyman was

that girl.

Q: Would you still regard a “singer” as someone who can throw down in the studio but lip-syncs live? A: Oh, a lot of them lip-sync. But they lipsync and they do it so well you can't tell that they're doing it. But I can always tell. I can always tell. I've never done that.

Q: What gives them away? A: Their mouths sometimes miss the movement! (Laughs) Your mouth should be making a certain movement when you sing a certain note, and they miss sometimes. But that's what they do for a living. I don't do that.

Q: So we've got Fantasia – who else is on this covers album? A: Ledisi, Andra Day, Emeli Sandé and Leela James – my God, that girl can sing. I love these ladies.

Q: Why have you never duetted in the studio with your goddaughter, Mariah Carey? A : I don't know. We always talk about it when we see each other.

Q: Maybe you two can hook up for a song on your dance album, which I believe is in the works. Hopefully we don't have to wait as long as we waited for this jazz album. A: Right?! Not 10 years, that's for sure. I have not started working on it. I'm working on a Christmas album at the moment and old R&B favorites of mine from back in the day.

44 | Hotspots.LGBT

And that… the uptempo music, I call it (laughs)... that will be done as soon as I do something with these other two projects, but it's de initely in the mix.

Q: Will it be for the gay clubs? A: Oh yeah, for the gay clubs. You know what, I was so angry with myself when I did NYC Pride. There was a song that I recorded many, many years ago called “Land of the Living.” I meant to do that that particular night and we didn't have time to rehearse it, but I'm gonna put stuff like that back in my show.

Q: Why did you want to perform that song at NYC Pride? A: Because there are so many gay men who were there who might be going through something with life. You're in the land of the living, so act like you're living. I just know what gay men go through and I wanted to put that song in the air, but I will.

Q: There couldn't be a more perfect time. There is so much happening in the world. Maybe you heard, but President Donald Trump said trans people are no longer able to serve in the military. A: I know! My friend told me. They're banned from service, according to the Trumpette. Ain't that a witch. Q: Do you think about your legacy, Patti? A: I just want to be honest and truthful, and I want people knowing that when I did whatever I did, it was all the way. Never half percent, always 100 percent. One-hundred

percent in everything: my cooking, my dressing, everything. If I can't go all the way, I won't go halfway. I have to go all the way. And just how honest I am – they can remember that. The more honest I am, the better I get by, the more things come to my plate. Everybody knows that if you give Patti something, it's gonna be quality. That's just how I work.

Q: Any last words for your gay fans? A: I just want all of my gay fans to know that I will always be here for them the way I am: honest, to the point, and loving my gay fans even more and more each day. I mean, when I think about it, the gay fans are some of the reason – one big reason – I'm still standing, 'cause they loved me when other people tried not to. Everybody always says, “What makes gay men like you?” “I have no clue,” I say. I still don't. But I know that love has lifted me up for many, many years. As long as I can stand on stage and my gay men and lesbian women see Patti LaBelle as someone who's always been honest on stage – you know, I'll stop and have to go to the bathroom and I'll let them know I'll be right back. A lot of cutie girls stand up there and they pretend for the hour or however how long and that's just gross. It turns me off.

Q: They pretend like they wanna be there? A: Yes! And everything you see of them is gonna be mechanical. Gladys Knight – she's a raw girl. And whenever you see Gladys, you're gonna see a different Gladys. If you just saw her show ive nights in a row, she will not do everything the same. Q: You just want something real. A: It has to stay that way.

Science has yet to definitively declare a “gay gene” – probably because all those evil-gelicals would abort their gaybies left and right and all hell would break loose (hallelujah?) – but just because the argument for biological evidence that determines sexual orientation hasn't been substantiated doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Barring the discovery of an actual genetic modification that predisposes people to being gay, studies have shown that homosexuality is a heritable trait. Nonetheless, the research as it stands now is still just a bunch of lab-coat mumbo jumbo caught up in a tornado of politics. Personally, I believe I'm a higher form of evolution. Not just me, though, but all gay people. I look at our community as a whole and, well, we do just about everything better than those who are not inherently equipped to think above the status quo. I'm not a kook, either. Rather, I'm skeptical of most oddball concepts – like psychics, paranormal activity, crop circles, and whoever convinced Bill Cosby it's a good idea to launch a speaking tour about sexual assault. But I do earnestly believe that you and I are genetically superior to our heterosexual counterparts. Here's why.

We encourage, adapt to, and continue the pursuit of progression Since the earliest recorded history – about 97th-century BCE when Mesolithic rock in Sicily is said to depict male homosexual intercourse – gays have infiltrated and influenced all aspects of life, from art to government. We're drawn to positions of power because we affect change more swiftly and more democratically than those seeking to rule, often iron-fistedly, simply to make up for their lack of anatomical endowment (which isn't just conjecture, by the way; a study by the Kinsey Institute reported that gay guys typically have bigger dicks than straight guys) and we don't have to look any further than our own current administration to see this time-honored tradition in practice. It stands to reason then that we have less to prove than straight men seeking power, who much of the time want to stifle progression, while we advocate on behalf of forging ahead, quite happy with what's been bestowed between our legs. In the meantime, we may have already answered the age-old question: Does size matter? All the world's conflicts started by cranky old straight men decidedly point to yes.

Bullying and oppression has informed our sense of humor and self-worth I use humor as a defense mechanism. Many of us do. But that's because we were forced to find the happiness in an otherwise depressing situation. We're made fun of, taunted, bullied, and put down everywhere we go – even today. But it's because of that that we're able to evaluate and identify our self-worth when nobody else will, and the sense of humor that evolves from that oppression is what makes us likeable, self-aware beings who can and will read another to filth just for kicks.

We have an “eye” for just about everything You can't teach imagination or creativity; you're either born with it or you aren't. Certainly there's a case to be made for the cultivation of our own capacities – which requires encouragement from those who raise us during our most vital developmental stages – but once we're in tune with our own intelligence, we're unstoppable. We corner the market on creative expression, from home design and culinary arts to science and movie making, and our insight is unrivaled because we won't allow it to be muted, even when some around us demanded it growing up. The downside to this, of course, includes our rampant daddy issues (for some of us, least) – but let's be honest, we make the most of that, too. Before I wrote this column, I asked my friends why they thought gay people were a higher form of evolution. Mostly because I needed validation that my own ego wasn't out of control. It is, mind you – everybody who knows me will tell you that – but in this case, I at least have comrades on my side. My buddy Jason provided his thoughts on this particular matter – why we seem to get “it” and ourselves more than straight people understand themselves and their place in this world. “For thousands of years, we have been systematically oppressed and persecuted by every major religion and every government,” he said. “Attempts

3 have been made to eradicate our kind for millennia, quite unsuccessfully. I believe we are feared most because we are, and always have been, the most powerful beings on this planet. We give you your culture, your beauty, your fashion, your art. We know no bounds, and exist in every corner of the earth, from your governments to your churches to your families, and all of your institutions. We cover every race, every gender and every class.” In laymen's terms, we're here and we're queer – and we will inherit this earth.

People are naturally drawn to us – for one reason or another Straight women follow us around like tongues-out Frenchies, and straight men envy all the things we possess that they desperately want, like the devotion of those straight women. Whether they'll admit it or not, heterosexuals envy us – and we should all sleep better accepting that as pseudo-scientific fact.

We are emotionally more advanced because of circumstance My beautiful lesbian friend Leslie laid this one out bare: “The strength one must possess to 'come out' as different from the norm is pretty much as powerful as one can be,” she said. “As humans we want to belong and be accepted by our tribe. It takes incredible strength and resilience to risk being literally abandoned by your tribe and surviving. It defies evolution as we know it, thus making us a whole new breed of fucking fabulous.”

5 We are, in fact, essential to humanity Dr. James O'Keefe delivered a TED Talk at TEDxTallaght in Dublin last year, and he related a story that was covered by NewNowNext about how his own son came out 13 years ago. Initially, Dr. O'Keefe feared for his son's safety and happiness, but then his own analytic abilities led him to surmise that his boy was going to be just fine – because gay people are goddamned remarkable. “Viewed in the light of evolution, homosexuality seems to be a real self-defeating non-productive strategy,” O'Keefe told the audience at his TED talk. “Gays have 80 percent fewer kids than heterosexuals. This is a trait that ought to go extinct in a few generations, yet down through recorded history in every culture and many animal species as well, homosexuality has been a small but distinct subgroup. If this were a genetic error, natural selection should have long ago culled this from the gene pool.” Dr. O'Keefe went on to discuss how everyone probably has gay genes in their DNA, but they only would have been activated as a means of survival, like stressful external circumstances while in the womb. You can watch his talk about how homos are motherfucking gods among men on YouTube; the talk is titled “Homosexuality: it's about survival – not sex,” because that's the truthiest truth there is.

Kendra will be live at The Manor

South Florida's Own Kendra Erika Tops The Billboard Charts

By Shane Gallagher

K

endra Erika is a South Florida native singer-songwriter. Trained in classical and jazz, she developed her Deep House party sound from hanging out in Miami clubs. “I was drawn to how the music played with people's emotions on the dance loor,” she recalls. “All the drops and build-ups produced this wave effect that became almost like a ride.” When writing her jazz and ballads, Kendra would take a more autobiographical approach in her writing, but with dance, she learned her job was to create music that appealed to everybody on the dance loor. When creating beats, she puts herself in the shoes of what fans would want to hear while they're partying and letting go. The dif icult part, she says, is giving the dance loor what it needs while also keeping her integrity as an artist. Kendra's latest single, “Under My Skin,” climbed to #6 on the Billboard Club charts this week. She'll perform it live August 19 at The Manor in Fort Lauderdale. We spoke with Kendra from her home in Boca Rotan.

Whenever I'm performing the song, I get this incredible feeling from the crowd, like it's engaging everyone's senses. Its pretty infectious. Q: “Under My Skin” is #6 on Billboard this week, right behind Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj. What does it feel like to be up on the charts with those ladies? A: Kendra Erika: Incredible! Both ladies have been rocking it for a good while, so it's more motivation for me to be my best every time. Q: Who is the real Kendra Erika? A: Kendra Erika: I'm a shy and con ident at the same time, if that makes any sense. When I'm home in Boca, I'm a laid back girl who enjoys the iner, simpler things in life: some quality time with my close friends and family, and watching Game of Thrones every Sunday. Q: Does your hometown crew in Boca support you? A: Kendra Erika: They really do, and I'm so grateful for it. It's so important to have friends outside of the industry that bring Q: What does it take to get under your skin? you back to earth and help balance me out. Q: Will they be cheering you on at The A: Kendra Erika: Slow drivers get under my Manor? skin! But in relation to the song and what's A: Kendra Erika: Yes. I'm super excited to gets under my skin when I'm out at the club, have them all be a part of another I'd say good vibes. Whenever they're incredible evening! happening, they get under my skin in a way Q: What's next for you? that takes control my body. A: Kendra Erika: I have an album Q: Is that what the song's about? Letting the releasing next month, and more groove take over? performances! Hope to see you at Manor! A: Kendra Erika: It's a visceral concept.

elray Beach offers the diversion of cozy theaters, quaint and high end shops, live entertainment, sporting events, and a downtown art district that has made the area famous. In 2012, USA Today Travel named Delray Beach America's Most Fun Small Town. But don't let this small town fool you; urban areas surround it so there is a ton of culture as well as a whole lot of good food. Original settlements in the area were populated by African-Americans as well as a large number of Japanese immigrants who came to start a farming colony in the early 1900s. Bahamian immigrants also came after the Flagler railroad was expanded and added a stop in the area.

With rotating exhibitions, tea ceremonies performed monthly in the Seishin-an tea house, educational outreach programs with local schools and organizations, and Japanese traditional festivals celebrated for the public several times a year, Morikami strives to spread appreciation for the living culture of Japan. The Morikami Collections house more than 7,000 Japanese art objects and artifacts, including a 500-piece collection of tea ceremony items, more than 200 textile pieces and fine art acquisitions. The 16 acres that surround Morikami's two museum buildings include expansive Japanese gardens with strolling paths, resting areas, a world-class bonsai collection and lakes teeming with koi and other wildlife. The wider 200-acre

park features nature trails, pine forests and picnic areas. For more information including entry fees and event information, visit Morikami.org

The Girls Strawberry U-Pick (4466 S. Military Trail, Suite 3 Delray Beach) is a site that has to be seen to be believed. Their hydroponic farm allows guest to come and pick strawberries without having to bend over or tramp through dirt fields. If picking berries isn't your style or it's not strawberry season, it's still worth a visit to try some of their fresh fruits and veggies, or to shop in their country store for other delicious hard to find items.

Delray's downtown area

centers around the neighborhoods of Pineapple Grove and SOFA (South of Atlantic). Along Atlantic Avenue you will find tons of restaurants and shops, leading you right up to the beach, which is wide, and features beautiful white sand typical of most Florida beaches.

Old School Square (51 N Swinton Ave, Delray Beach) has

been turned into a cultural center. It features the Crest Theatre, a venue for the performing arts; the 1925 gymnasium, restored to maintain its appearance, has become a popular venue for local events such as

Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens

wedding receptions and dances; the Cornell Museum of Art and History, built in the restored elementary school; and a recently constructed outdoor entertainment pavilion, which serves as a venue for musical performances and has also been used for events such as political rallies. They have a great lineup of events all summer long, check them out at OldSchoolSquare.org The historic home of teacher/Principal Solomon D. Spady (170 NW 5 Ave, Delray Beach) was renovated and has been turned into the

Spady Cultural Heritage Museum,

which houses many black archives. It hosts exhibits and programs designed to recognize the efforts of blacks who were instrumental in shaping Delray Beach and Palm Beach County. In 2007, the museum was expanded by renovating a 1935 cottage into a kid's cultural clubhouse, and the construction of a 50-seat amphitheater named for C. Spencer Pompey, a pioneer black educator.

Where to go Take a weekend restaurant tour since Delray has become somewhat of a Foodie's enclave with tons of great restaurants and bars making up most of the

Downtown

nightlife scene. The Farm to Table movement has become firmly entrenched in Palm Beach County, and some claim that the seat of the movement is centered in Delray. For a true farm to fork experience, visit Max's

Harvest (169 NE 2nd Ave, Delray Beach). They take pride in

providing locally sourced food, including grass fed lamb from Deland, pork from Avon Park, and beef from Clewiston. For South Florida, it doesn't get much more local than that! To make a reservation, give them a call at (561) 3819970 or visit them at MaxsHarvest.com or find them on Open Table.

50 Ocean (50 S. Ocean Blvd Delray Beach) is another Fin to Fork, Farm to table eatery in Delray smack dab on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. Even with wrap around floor to ceiling windows in their second floor dining room, the amazing view plays second fiddle to the food here. Try a hand crafted cocktail happy hour from 4-7 p.m. MondayFriday or stop in for brunch from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Chef Joseph Bonavita Jr. took over the helm at 50 Ocean in late 2016. He is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Chicago and got his chops

50 Ocean

training at several topnotch restaurants in Chicago and NYC. For reservations, visit 50Ocean.com or call 561278-3364. For a meal that is a bit more “low key, try Mellow

Mushroom (25 S.E 6th Ave., Delray Beach). Don't worry,

you're not having an acid flashback from your bygone hippy days, these guys are just keeping the counter culture alive, one pizza at a time. But pizza is not the only trippy item on the menu, but it is exceptionally delicious here. Wash your pie down with one of their enormous selections of draft and bottled beers. This is where pizza lovers and beer lovers gather. Just don't try to smoke the oregano! No one does brunch quite like the gays, so chances are on either Saturday or Sunday you will need a Bloody Mary, a mimosa, and some delicious food to soak all up all the alcohol so stop in to Gary Rack's Farmhouse

Kitchen (204 E Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach), located just a

couple blocks west of the Intercostal. Executive Chef Matthew Danaher's meticulously developed menu encapsulates passion for redefining fresh-focused food. Seasonal, sustainable, locally sourced ingredients form crave-worthy dishes

that exude ingenuity to create the FARMHOUSE Kitchen tradition. They serve brunch all weekend long from 9am-3pm but they are open for lunch and dinner every day as well. When to go One of the most popular events in Delray is the Delray Beach Garlic Fest now renamed the South Florida Garlic Fest. The yearly event has been happening for nearly 20 years and in 2018 will take place February 9-11. Featuring local and nationally known entertainment, rides and amusements, and tons of garlicky goodness, this three-day food and wine festival is a huge draw for the area. 5 Signs You're Really Out of Shape (And what to do about It!) ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

A

re you one of those people who lives a busy life – too busy to take time for exercise? Do you put off going to the gym, taking the stairs, or even walking the dog because you're too tired? Chances are, after a couple of months, sometimes years of making excuses, even legitimate ones, you're going to find yourself seriously out of shape. No time for regrets or self-deprecation, just look for the signs, be honest, and follow a few suggestions that will get you back to where you need to be! • You're always tired. Exhaustion and fatigue are often the result of inactivity. Even if you're working 10- hour days in an office behind a computer or travelling by car to appointments, you're still not physically active enough to make a difference. According to The American Council on Exercise, working out regularly

(3-5 times/week, 30 minutes) is the key to staying energized and alert all day. What to do: Get moving. Take a walk at lunch. Use the stairs at work. Walk the dog. Swim laps in your pool. Bike around the neighborhood.

2 3 4 5

• You can't do push-ups. Push-ups are an excellent test, especially for upper body and core strength. To perform a push-up, you should be able to lower yourself with arms tucked close to your body before pushing yourself back up. Anyone less than 50 should be able to do a minimum of 5-10 just to be considered in fair shape. What to do: Try modified push-ups with your knees on the ground. • Your heart's telling you something. Check your pulse by placing your index and third finger on the side of your neck beneath your jawline, and count beats per minute. A normal resting heart rate is between 60-100 beats/minute. When a fit person exercises the heart speeds up to 140-190 beats/minute to pump O2 throughout the body. When you stop, the heart slows down to normal by about 20 beats/minute. If you find your heart racing when you climb stairs or carry groceries, you're probably out of shape and need some cardiovascular activity. What to do: Choose low-impact, lowresistance exercises like walking, swimming or light weight training to get started. • Your waist is out of control. Excess weight around the midsection is not only unattractive, it's dangerous to your health. Males should have a waist circumference of no more than 40 inches, females shouldn't exceed 35 inches. What to do: Lose weight by eliminating late night grazing, cut back on alcohol, no more junk food and fried foods. Eat a healthy breakfast! • You're always in a bad mood. Long stressful hours at work, lack of physical activity, weight gain and other factors can make you short tempered and cranky. What to do: Get up, get out meet people, try new fun activities. What are you waiting for?

DONALD TRUMP A FAILURE AND A FRAUD

O

BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI

n July 26 at 8:55 a.m. Donald Trump tweeted: “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow……” For nine long minutes there was no follow-up tweet. In fact, some members of the Pentagon initially feared that Trump was about to declare war. It turns out that Trump was declaring war, only it wasn’t on North Korea. It was on transgender troops right here in the United States. He followed his initial tweet with two more that read,“….transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.”

Yes, he really ended the third tweet with “Thank you,” you know, like a Commander In Chief does when he’s singled out a vulnerable minority in his own country’s military and fired them, opening them up for scorn and ridicule. Since this radical policy change we’ve seen many different responses to it. Everything from “the military spends more money on Viagra than it does on trans health care” to “Uh, we’re the generals and military experts and we weren’t told shit about this” to “Trump is a draft dodger who should be thankful there are people willing to volunteer for the armed forces.” In fact, as of July 31, the Pentagon had received no formal guidance regarding trans troops, according to ABC News. And until that happens, well, nothing really happens. So is Trump’s tweet just a meaningless temper tantrum? Hardly.

Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.” Note that President Obama lifted the ban on trans service members. Conservatives were not happy. The Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins, for example, lamented back in December that “feminists” and “the left” were emasculating the military’s culture “of manhood and masculinity.” The right-wing demonization of transgender people has been unrelenting in the past few years. Having lost the battle against marriage equality, keeping trans folks out of public restrooms became the new right-wing obsession. And since they couldn’t keep gays and lesbians out of the military, they’ve moved the goal posts again and put trans troops in the crosshairs. And they see Trump as their political savior. And Trump, who loves to be fawned over, is more than happy to sacrifice trans troops if it means that the religious right will stick by him and his total failure of a presidency. As Alex Wagner pointed out in Slate, trans troops are already serving. Wagner warns that if Trump’s tweets become policy it would result in “a horrifying witch hunt” “The military will be tasked to delve into the private lives of our armed forces to identify trans troops — who were, just a year ago, encouraged to serve openly,” Wagner writes. “Such a purge of transgender individuals from the ranks would represent an unprecedented attempt to socially engineer a military that is

finally open to all Americans who can meet its high standards.” Imagine being a trans troop member, open and brave and serving your country. And the President of the United States publicly declares you an enemy. Trump, of course, cannot meet and never has met the military’s high standards, or the high standards of the presidency, for that matter. He can’t even meet the most basic standards of human decency. Trump is a failure and a fraud. Lashing out against Americans who are dedicated to this country and willing to risk their lives for it, when Trump is neither, is beyond shameful.

NEED WOOD

By Woody Miller

DEAD IN

BED M

y boyfriend suddenly seems distant in bed—like he’s just going through the motions, if he goes through them at all. I’m so afraid that he’s falling out of love with me. I know I should talk to him but he’s not the talking kind and frankly, neither am I. Do you think his change in sexual behavior is a sign that he’ll soon kick me to the curb? — Dead Bed

y Dear Bed Head No, I think it’s a sign that you two mutes need to talk. The only problem silence ever solves is in the library. Don’t assume that a lack of interest is a lack of love. It’s not always about you. Let me repeat that because you’re gay and all the mirrors you’re holding up probably deflected what I wrote from your eyes: It’s not always about you. If he’s changed the frequency, passion or interest in sex it *could* be a sign that he thinks you’re as exciting as a Kansas zip code. But it’s most likely circumstances that changed his behavior in bed. Take stress. That’ll give anybody’s d!ck a flat tire. I remember once working for a company that rumbled with rumors of bankruptcy. I didn’t want to worry my boyfriend so I kept it to

myself. Actually, my d!ck kept to itself because no matter how many times I yelled, “Showtime, Mr. Happy!” he just wouldn’t perform. When I finally shared the problem and my boyfriend helped me through it (the company did go bankrupt, btw), I became my old self—a lewd, loud and lecherous horn-dog who kept calling his boyfriend by the wrong name just to piss him off. The biggest sign that something’s wrong with the relationship is if he starts taking care of himself physically but ignores you sexually. If that’s the case don’t let the clue bat hit you in the face: He’s fallen out of love with you and into lust with someone else. There are smaller signs, too: •He fakes his orgasms by spitting on your back. •He suddenly thinks foreplay is a golfing term •He has to drink a lot before climbing in bed •He starts acting like an underpaid gigolo. Remember, what your boyfriend does on the way to the bed is more important than what he does in it. Is he still affectionate? Does he pay attention to you? Is he respectful? Does he want to be *with* you as much as he wants to be *in* you? If so, then sit down and have a chat. Boyfriends shouldn’t just be all over each other in bed—they should be leaning on each other outside of it. My advice? Quit guessing and ask him if he’s stressed out about something you can help him with.
