Q: What is Shop + Play Wilton? A: Shop + Play Wilton is a community service initiative by Hotspots Media, the Wilton Manors Business Association (WMBA) and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (GFLGLCC), with support from the City of Wilton Manors. Its goal is simply to encourage the LGBT community, friends and supporters to come out to Wilton Drive during this week-long promotion and experience all that the area has to offer in shopping, dining, nightlife, entertainment and more. Q: When is it? A: Shop + Play Wilton kicks off on the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 13 and runs through Wednesday, Sept. 20. Participating shops, restaurants, bars and other businesses along the Drive as well as Dixie Village will be offering special discounts and incentives to customers wearing Shop + Play Wilton wristbands. Wrist bands are readily available for free at participating businesses. A schedule of nightly events will encourage attendees to come out to the Drive and Dixie Village to shop, dine, play and stay while supporting the LGBT and Wilton Manors business communities. Q: I own a business in the area. How do I participate and how much does it cost? A: It’s easy to participate. Simply register at ShopPlayWilton.com and you will receive a decal for your storefront. There is no charge to participate. You are encouraged to promote a sale or special customer offer at your business during the event. Hotspots magazine will be publishing a list of all participating merchants in print and online the week of the event in a special section.

The best chatter on Facebook this week “The truth of the matter is… if you’re treating people differently just because of who they love and who they are, then there’s a connection between that mindset and the mindset that led to racism, and the mindset that leads to ethnic conflict. It means that you’re not able to see somebody else as a human being.” FORMER PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, speaking in Washington, D.C. recently at a summit of young African leaders. He urged to young leaders to be more accepting of gay people.
“There is no equivalency between groups like the KKK, neo-nazis and Black Lives Matter. To infer or outright state that there is is just wrong. Read up, educate yourself, and open your minds. It’s 2017 not 1950. America is great because she is diverse and welcoming to all people. We need to remember that especially now in the face of such hatred that is bubbling up. I reject hatred, bigotry, anti-semitism, homophobia and white supremacy.” “…from California to the New York islands, from the redwood forests, to the Gulf Stream waters, this land was made for you and me…” IAN MALONEY, Miami-based writer, educator and contributing editor to Hotspots.
“Wow! That was something else!”
JAKE TAPPER, CNN anchor who was visibly shaken after President Trump’s press conference in which he seemed to cast equal blame on white supremacists and the demonstrators who marched against them in Charlottesville, Va.

food for THOUGHT
In every town, there are hidden gems of fine dining that the locals would prefer to keep all to themselves. Such a place is Kaluz, a so-chic, so-sophisticated and so-good Intracoastal eatery that any hope of keeping this find a secret disappeared within months of its opening back in 2013. Sitting snug and classy just south of the East Commercial Blvd drawbridge, Kaluz is that special place for a romantic meal for two or the perfect venue to host a business dinner for 40. Either way, the setting is sleek and modern, with the lights set just low enough for everyone to enjoy the view of the yachts passing by all evening. This luxury look doesn’t come cheap, of course. An appetizer of Tuna Tartare runs $17, but is easily enough for two. The

3300 E Commercial Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308 954-772-2209 kaluzrestaurant.com sushi-grade tuna is perfectly presented with fresh avocado in a soy and sriracha sauce, complemented with crispy wontons. Equally as popular on the appetizer menu is the Coconut Shrimp ($19), delivered with a sweet mango compote drizzled with a cilantro olive oil. The night we dined at Kaluz, a 100-foot yacht arrived and was placed under the competent control of the restaurant’s dock master who oversees their 220-foot dock. There, continuing rotating vessels fill the available space, availing their guests onboard service. For the over-hungry or those from Texas, the 20-ounce Bone-In Ribeye ($41) with peppercorn steak sauce is a favorite, served with a loaded baked potato (which itself is big enough for a meal and is available as a side at $7). It comes sizzling hot
and appropriately grand to your table with such style that you imagine all eyes are on you. Well, actually, they are. No less flavorful is the Barrel Cut Filet Mignon ($37). This nine-ounce choice beef tenderloin is slathered with Béarnaise sauce and yet another loaded baked potato. The restaurant also has a 14-ounce Slow Roasted Prime Rib ($34) and a premium choice 16-ounce New York Strip Steak ($37) on its menu. Every cut of beef stands as testament to the restaurant’s Argentinian owner who runs a slew of Kansas Grills in South America.
For those wanting some lighter fare, we recommend the Thai Noodle & Shrimp Salad ($17), a dish we’ve had at both lunch and dinner. It’s crisp green cabbage, arugula, mint and mango share the plate with chilled Thai noodles and jumbo shrimp that will wake up your tongue with a special hot glaze. Good flavor never grows old. The restaurant is also well known for its classic Caesar Salad ($10). The dressing and croutons are house made, and the salad can be served with chicken or shrimp for an extra few bills. Flatbread Pizzas range in
price from $13-$15, and are offered with Margherita, Barbecue Chicken, Steak and Portabella, Shrimp and Goat Cheese, or Italian Sausage and Peppers. As with the other dishes, this too can be shared around the table. Expect your server to encourage the move with individual small white plates delivered with the dish. If you can find the room (and we always seem to), our favorite dessert is the Salted Caramel Brownie ($8) with vanilla ice cream, Dulce Leche and macadamia nuts. Decadent. Kaluz offers indoor seating and outdoor dining on its dock deck. Each space has its own full service bar, with the outside bar and lounge area open an hour after the kitchen closes at 10 pm. (11 pm on Friday and Saturday). Come often and tell them HotSpots! sent you.

Miami Beach SoBe – Where it’s always happening
M
iami Beach, considered by most travel websites and experts as one of the top destinations in the Sunshine state, sees millions of tourists each year who flock its beautiful, wide, white sand beaches to escape the wicked winters up north, or just to get a bit of respite from the trials and tribulations of everyday life. A lot of people don’t realize that Miami and Miami Beach are not the same city. Miami Beach is an island that is connected to Miami by several causeways but which has its own government, police, and is totally independent of the City of Miami.
72 | Hotspots.LGBT
Miami Beach is made up of a narrow strip of land that features over seven miles of beaches which to this day, remain the main tourist attraction the city has to offer. There is nothing better than walking the streets and smelling sun tan lotion as locals and tourists alike flock to the crystal clear water of the Atlantic Ocean to escape the famous Florida heat and humidity. During the day, leave the shirts and shoes behind, and just try to keep your eyes in your head and not stare at the perfectly sculpted bodies that pass you by. Miami Beach is made up of three main geographical areas: North Beach, Mid Beach, and South Beach. The most popular is South Beach, often abbreviated SoBe. South Beach ends around
24th Street, Mid-Beach ends around 63rd Street, and North Beach makes up the remaining few miles of the city. South Beach is dominated by Ocean Drive and its Art Deco style, tons of bars, and crowds of tourists. Mid-Beach is mainly hotels along the beach, but it does feature a stretch of the wooden boardwalk that still runs several blocks just along the dunes. North Beach is not quite so touristy, but is a great place to grab some grub or have better luck finding a parking spot without endless circles around the block.
Where to Stay
Hôtel Gaythering (1409 Lincoln Road)
The Hôtel Gaythering is a boutique hotel that caters to gay men who want to stay gay in Miami Beach. In fact, it’s the only gay hotel in Miami Beach. Located on Lincoln Road just west of the touristy area, this gem has some areas that are men only. The hotel bar has an extensive hand crafted cocktail list along with drink specials and other special events all week long. Don’t miss their Bears and Hares Friday nights. Besides the normal hotel room selection, Gaythering offers men the option to stay in one of their economical Crate Shared Room (think bathhouse style rooms) where guests who are a bit more social or who are on a budget can join in the fun. These rooms are only 64 sq. feet and feature TV’s and a sleep sound machine to help drown out ambient noise since the walls are only 7ft. high and made out of plywood. For more information, visit them online at Gaythering.com

The Shelborne is an ocean front Art Deco masterpiece that features 200 rooms and has been recently undergone a $150 million renovation which saw it totally redone to match its original 1940s splendor. They are currently featuring several offers, including a Summer in South Beach special which includes nightly valet parking as well as no resort fees. Visit them online for more information. Delano South Beach (1685 Collins Avenue)
With its soaring lobby and subtle seductions, Delano South Beach is one of the hotels that changed South Beach forever. Designed by Philippe Starck, Delano South Beach balances eclectic details with grand public spaces that are playful, elegant, quietly theatrical and filled with all-night energy - proof that the new rules of chic are simplicity with a crisp, clean and modern sense of ease. The signature restaurant in the hotel has recently undergone a name change and complete overhaul of the menu. Leynia, as it is now called, is headed by Chef Jose Icardi and features Argentinian flavors that are inspired by Japan, outdoor grilling, and roaming bicycles that come by each table for special food and drink preparations. The hotel also features Umi Sushi and Sake Bar for casual or group dining. This beach front hotel is the height of Art Deco splendor and features a beautifully landscaped garden area, a huge pool with a few tables available for drinks IN THE POOL, and The Doheny Room, which is tucked away behind closed doors in the back of Delano’s expansive lobby. The Doheny Room offers a refined, yet stylish atmosphere, catering to those looking for an experience that’s a bit more cultured. Sceney yet discreet, the concept’s Miami outpost offers much of what has made the space a choice locale for the country’s who’s who. For more information or to book a room, visit DelanoHotel.com

Where to Play
Back in the day, pretty much all of the gay life in South Florida revolved around Miami Beach and Key West. While many of the old stomping grounds
of the 90s have closed down, including the most recent (temporary) closing of Palace Bar, Miami Beach remains a hot bed of gay life and it’s tough to walk more than two blocks without a spotting a gay in his natural element -- no shirt, muscles showing, and headed to the beach!
12th Street Beach
As I already mentioned, the main draw for Miami Beach is, of course, the beach. Since it’s warm all year long, there is never a bad time to get some sun and take a dip here. The gays go to 12th Street beach to frolic, meet
friends, and work on their tans. Join them there and you won’t be disappointed.
Live at the National Hotel (1677 Collins Avenue)
From Thursday through Sunday, from 8:30 p.m.midnight, get your evening started with a cocktail and some live music. Featuring the dulcet voice of Victor Valdez, Antonio Edwards, and Rick Leonard, who perform separately and together, you won’t find a better place to kick off a night of fun. Sit around the bar or a bit closer to the piano and make sure to suggest a few tunes you would like to hear. Valdez does an amazing Lady Gaga, but his voice just goes perfectly with his amazing piano playing skills.

It is the perfect spot for people watching as you dine al fresco and shop for some hot new clothes or beach accessories. The pedestrian area stretches across the island from Washington Ave. to Alton Road, but the businesses extend past both of those borders. Highlights include the Colony Theatre, Cvi.Che 105 (1245 Lincoln Rd) an amazing Peruvian restaurant on the west side, Doraku (1104 Lincoln Rd) a sushi spot owned by the son of restauranteur Rocky H. Aoki, founder of the famous Benihana, or Balans (1022 Lincoln Rd), a fantastic spot for delicious new wave American fare with an international flare. Surrounding the square are lots of little restaurants, a few bars, and ice cream shops. Different types of sushi are on different color plates, with the most expensive only setting diners back a measly $3.75! If you go, go early, or be prepared to wait, this place fills up quick and is easy to miss because it looks like a hole in the wall. If you are in the mood for an eclectic mix of French and Moroccan food, make a reservation at Rouge (908 71st St), a lounge that features one of the most romantic patios in the city. ne question I get again and again, is, “What should I eat before and after a workout?” I always begin my response by explaining that different types of exercise stress your body in different ways. This means your nutritional requirements will vary depending upon the type of exercise you're doing. For example, an extended bike ride mainly burns fat for sustained energy. A tough weight training session requires complex carbs to be utilized for immediate energy. First, no matter what type of exercise you have in mind, eat your last solid food meal 2 – 4 hours before the workout. If you opt for a smoothie instead, you might want to finish it off, say 90 minutes before your planned activity. Ideally, you want to eat something that's going to stay with you and work for you all

throughout your exercise session. Whole grain pastas and veggies are great carbs and grilled chicken breasts or broiled fish are perfect protein sources. Stay away from a starchy, sugary meal that's going to cause your blood sugar to spike and
then drop leaving you a tired heap on the gym floor! Second, if you're planning to exercise for more than 90 minutes, many sports nutritionists recommend supplementing with branched chain amino acids (BCAA's), a mixture of essential amino acids that help protect and build muscle fibers during demanding, strenuous sessions. BCAA's also boost stamina and help maintain even blood-sugar levels during prolonged athletic activity. You can mix up a powered BCAA supplement in juice or water and sip it before, during and after your workout for maximum absorption.
Third, once you've completed your run, swim, or weight training session, it's best to wait 20 minutes to a half hour before your post- workout meal. Stretch, cool down, drink water and give your body a chance to settle down; give it time to go through some important hormonal adjustments that take place following exercise. Then allow it the nutrition it craves. Here are a few pre- and post- workout meal ideas: A 90- minute bike ride or run: · Pre-workout: High protein smoothie – mix 2 scoops of vanilla whey protein, 10 ounces of water or skim milk, 1 cup of mixed berries (frozen or fresh), and 2-3 tablespoons of almond or peanut butter. · Post-workout: 2 hard-boiled eggs and a half of an English muffin with fruit spread or almond butter.
A one- hour weight training session (2 or 3 muscle groups, 3 exercises / group, three to four sets of 8-12 reps.) · Pre-workout: One large grilled chicken breast (trim the fat) with a cup of broccoli, chopped kale, or bell peppers, or a high protein smoothie as described above. · Post-workout: One cup of plain yogurt or Greek yogurt with one cup of mixed berries and 2 tablespoons of granola Remember, your nutritional plan is key to the success of your workout plan.

LINDA HARVEY
THE WOMAN WHO THINKS LGBTQ KIDS ARE CREEPY PREDATORS
I
BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI
t’s August, which means Summer will be over soon. If you’re a parent, chances are that your kids spent part of their time off from school at a Summer camp. There are so many to choose from: performing arts camps, sports camps, science camps, yoga camps, Space Camp. There’s even Plantation Camp in California where “everyone lives outside without electricity and works on a sustainable farm.” I tried to go to their website, but it wasn’t working. Go figure. Anyway, regardless of what kind of camp you sent/are sending your kids to, I just wanted to give you a quick heads up: they’re gay now. One day you’re sending your totally 100 percent heterosexual child off to have a camp adventure and the next you’re picking up your totally 100 percent homosexual child. Because that’s totally how sexuality works.
92 | Hotspots.LGBT
And we may have never known any of this were it not for Linda Harvey bravely speaking the truth on Molly Smith’s rightwing radio show. Harvey and Smith, who is the president of Cleveland Right to Life, discussed how going to camp puts kids at risk for gayness. Smith, referring to an article written by Harvey, says, “Same-sex hook ups can become a daring adventure at camp outs and sleep overs. Opportunity is everywhere where students of the same sex gather or socialize and is one of the reasons homosexuality has traditionally been taboo at schools, camps and youth organizations.” Got that? The reason why people are against LGBTQ students being able to live their lives openly and without fear of harassment and discrimination is because if we start treating LGBTQ students decently then all of the straight kids will want to try it out.
...these kids who are already highly sexualized and nobody may know it, but it’ll come out in the middle of the night. And so we need to keep boys away from boys and girls away from girls because otherwise “same-sex hook ups” are too tempting. Let’s allow Harvey to elaborate. “What happens is any time there is any kind of same-sex environment -- I do not mean same-sex homosexuality, I mean boys together doing things together, girls together,” Harvey says. “It attracts the people that would take advantage of them, and then it will be someone of the same sex, so access is what these people want.” Okay, first of all I need to point out that Harvey says she doesn’t mean homosexuality, but “boys together doing things together” sounds pretty gay. Secondly, Harvey is employing the “gays and lesbians are predators” narrative. You know how gay kids are, they just wait to infiltrate an unsuspecting group of kids their same sex so they can persuade them all to join Team Gay. Harvey then goes on to say that “so many kids are into pornography” and seems to imply that this is especially true for LGBTQ kids, which is what makes them so dangerous. “Those may be the people that your kids are in a sleepover with or at camp with,” says Harvey, “these kids who are already highly sexualized and nobody may know it, but it’ll come out in the middle of the night.” On the one hand, this is ridiculous and insulting. LGBTQ kids are not creepy predators. If a lesbian teen signs up for an all girls robotics camp it’s because she likes robots not because she’s hoping to “reprogram” the girls around her.
On the other hand, if you remove the whole predatory subtext, then Harvey has a point. OF COURSE LGBTQ youth meet other youth and form relationships, sexual or otherwise at places like camps and schools. That’s how ALL youth meet other people. It’s called a social life. Apparently that’s yet another thing that Harvey believes LGBTQ youth don’t deserve.

CHEATING
PUMP H
ey, Woody! You know those vacuum pumps advertised in men’s magazines that promise to put at least another inch on your manhood? Are they a waste of money? — Wondering

I’m wondering what I’m doing wrong that I’m still getting pathetic letters like this. For the last time, there is no known way to make your penis bigger. Why do you think we build all those nuclear bombs? These vacuum pumps were originally devised to help men with erection problems. You stick your soft penis into a plastic cylinder and like a hamster pressing a lever for the treat; you press a lever that pumps air out of the cylinder. This creates a vacuum that draws blood into the penis and voila! Erection. Then you tie a specially designed rubber band around the base of your penis (to hold the blood in place and keep a full erection). The boys in the vacuum pump industry got a little ahead of themselves and decided
Hey, Woody! I slept with my best friend’s boyfriend. It was a drunken mistake and I have no desire to repeat it. I want to tell him but I’m afraid of losing his friendship. What should I do? — Honest Indian

Dear Wondering:
they could repackage it as a way of making you a bigger man. Technically, they’re right—the pumps do make your penis bigger. In the same way your mouth can make mine bigger.
Dear Indian: Most professionals would recommend that you acknowledge your dirty deed and pay the price, even if it means losing your best friend. Lucky for you, I’m not a professional. I say silence is golden. Act like you’re in Ft. Knox. Honesty is an incredibly over-rated gesture in situations like this. If any good could come out of your best friend knowing, I’d say do it. Unloading your guilt doesn’t qualify as a selfless, beneficial act. It’s like taking a dump in his living room. Sure, you’ll feel unburdened but what’s he supposed to do with a hot, steaming load of sh!t on his rug? I say keep your mouth shut, your fly zipped and acknowledge a terrible mistake you resolve never to repeat.
