DJ TRACY YOUNG Celebrates

25 YEARS IN THE D.J. BOOTH

THIS WOMAN HAS GOT THE POWER!

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

D

J Tracy Young celebrates 25 illustrious years behind the turntables this month. In that time, the music weaver who has been heralded for her work with the hottest names in music including Madonna, Cher, and Lady Gaga, has released seven musical compilations and racked up 48 #1 Billboard Club hits. Her latest single, “Peace, Love, & Music, is already at #6 on the Billboard dance chart. At the time Tracy irst stepped into the booth, a female DJ was unheard of. It was equivalent to a woman playing football in the NFL. It simply did not happen. Young owes much of her success to powerful women in the industry who helped

her along the way. Most notably, her friend Ingrid Casares who introduced her to Madonna in the mid-nineties. Young would go on to spin private events for the Material Girl: movie premieres, album release parties, even her wedding to Guy Ritchie! Madonna's stamp of approval lead to more opportunities to work with celebrities and soon, Young was producing her own original music. Tracy Young is looking forward to celebrating her silver jubilee in style. She will release a special 25th year anniversary compilation this fall, but in the mean time we sat down with her for an exclusive Hotspots interview about a week before her taking over the DJ booth at the Black Fort Lauderdale event.

DJ TRACY YOUNG How does it feel to be such a female pioneer in the male dominated DJ Industry and to have made it 25 years? It has been dif icult at times, especially at the beginning of my career. There weren't many women in the DJ booth behind the turntables. Therefore, I feel very fortunate to have had the career I've had. However, I honestly don't think about it in a “pioneer way. It's always been about the music for me. I believe that people spend time doing things that they love. I loved to DJ, spent my free time practicing, and was persistent about it. It was always about the craft. I just love music and I think that shows through my productions, DJ sets, and the journey the story tells. It's a passion and nothing to do with gender to me. In your 25 year career, what are some of the special moments that stand out? It's too dif icult to name them all. A recent moment that stands out was when I DJ'd the Hillary Clinton rally that was held at the Manor in Fort Lauderdale and she attended. It was such a historical moment. This is such a hard question to answer because I feel every moment is special. I have been blessed to have so many amazing opportunities. I've had the privilege to work with some of the most in luential women and pioneers in the music industry such as Cher, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Stevie Nicks, Shakira, Diane Warren, Lady Gaga & Katy Perry. I have traveled all over the world, DJing some of the biggest events, festivals and night clubs and had the honor to work with numerous charities such as GLAAD, the Trevor Project, the National Task force & Care Resource. Let's go back to the beginning, when did you realize you wanted to be a DJ? I've always been obsessed with music. It's how I communicate and I talked my way into Tracks nightclub at age 17 and was intrigued by the segway between two records. It was one continuous song and I simply had to know how to do that. I inally was able to get to the DJ booth and when I witnessed the DJ spin two records together with a mixer I had to do it. I went out bought two turntables and my ex-boyfriend bought me a mixer. I was hooked and would be mixing and practicing in my spare time. What was your irst residency and can you remember how it felt? HillHaven in South East Washington DC was my irst residency, and I remember how it felt as it feels the

DJ TRACY YOUNG

same today. I still have that anxious feeling when I step into the DJ booth. It never goes away until I start spinning. I always want people to feel the journey of the music and the story that's being told. You have toured most of your career. What are some of your favorite cities and events? I loved all the experiences I've had in every city. Montreal for Black & Blue, and Orlando for Gay Days have been some of the most memorable. Of course, Miami & Fort Lauderdale for GENESIS New Years Day is always one of my favorite events of the year. It's always an 8 to 10 hour musical journey and the best way to celebrate New Years! Can't wait for 2018's Genesis which is in the planning stages! What separates you from other DJs? I think my versatility in many different genres. I started my career in radio at WPGC in Washington, DC which has provided a vast amount of musical knowledge in HipHop, Top 40, Old School, Disco, R & B, Funk, and Freestyle. I play several different formats. I just started a show at iHeart media on 939 Mia Saturday's at 9pm which is a mix of 80's, 90's and current hits of today. It's very different from what I do in nightclubs and festivals. You have worked among and with superstars. Other than the obvious, Madonna, who are your favorites and why? Cyndi Lauper & Lady Gaga are two of my favorites. They are incredibly gifted on stage and the passion they have for music is infectious. What is your go to song when you really need to pump a dance loor? Peace, Love & Music which is an original production I did with my longtime friend and singer Ceevox. We released remixes by Alain Jackinsky, Tom Stephan, Eric Kupper, Barry Harris, and MSC Bounce. This is a weapon for any crowd! Other than DJing, what do you like to do for fun? I love to exercise, watch documentaries, and am a huge animal lover! To be honest though, I love to create, listen to, remix and write music for fun. It's what I eat, breathe and live for. Everything that I love to do is surrounded

16 | Hotspots.LGBT

by music. So I'm always creating. Are you excited about headlining the 19th annual Black Fort Lauderdale, a Gary Santis event, and what should the crowd expect from you? I love working at the Manor in Fort Lauderdale and with Gary Santis. Fort Lauderdale has an energy that reminds me of Miami in the 90's. Its raw, artsy, fresh and welcoming. Gary is a pioneer in this business and has a vision and formula that just simply works. It's exciting to be part of his vision. I am working on exclusive remixes and new original songs. I have always been the type of DJ that feeds off the crowd's energy so although I'm always prepared musically, it's a give-take relationship between the dance loor and me. Just expect to dance your A - - off! What does the future hold for DJ Tracy Young? I'm moving to the next phase of my career which is songwriting and more music original production. I am spending most of my time creating songs and challenging myself by this process. Over the past years, I have spent most of my time producing remixes however now, my attention has shifted to the challenge of the original composition. I've been working on more music for TV and documentaries as well, and have a song featured in the show “Corporate” which comes out soon.

A: Shop + Play Wilton is a community service initiative by Hotspots Media, the Wilton Manors Business Association (WMBA) and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (GFLGLCC), with support from the City of Wilton Manors. Its goal is simply to encourage the LGBT community, friends and supporters to come out to Wilton Drive during this week-long promotion and experience all that the area has to offer in shopping, dining, nightlife, entertainment and more. Q: When is it? A: Shop + Play Wilton kicks off on the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 13 and runs through Wednesday, Sept. 20. Participating shops, restaurants, bars and other businesses along the Drive as well as Dixie Village will be offering special discounts and incentives to customers wearing Shop + Play Wilton wristbands. Wrist bands are readily available for free at participating businesses. A schedule of nightly events will encourage attendees to come out to the Drive and Dixie Village to shop, dine, play and stay while supporting the LGBT and Wilton Manors business communities. Q: I own a business in the area. How do I participate and how much does it cost? A: It’s easy to participate. Simply register at ShopPlayWilton.com and you will receive a decal for your storefront. The best chatter on Facebook this week

“Discrimination against an individual on the basis of sexual orientation is deeply offensive to the dignity and self-worth of the individual. Equality demands that the sexual orientation of each person in society must be protected on an even platform.” The Supreme Court of India, declaring that sexual orientation is a fundamental right with no room for discrimination.

“I am a gay, Arab-American man. And I’m going to take it even further. Not only am I gay, But I’m also a bottom. Not only am I a bottom, but I’m also a total bottom which means I like it up you know where.”

Actor HAAZ SLEIMAN, who plays nurse Mohammed “Mo-MO” De La Cruz on Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, revealing his sexual orientation on social media.

“The decision of President Trump to pardon Sheriff Arpaio is a perversion of justice and demeans the prerogatives of the presidency… the symbolism is stark, provocative and important. Mr. Trump continues to proudly strut on the global stage as a divisive actor heedless of the shouts of derision and censure from the majority of his audience. He seems only concerned in basking in the lusty cheers of intolerance from his enabled base. Amidst rumors that Mr. Trump will end the deferred action policy for dreamers, the already glowing embers of racial strife risk bursting into destructive flames. And Mr. Trump appears eager to fan them on…” DAN RATHER, veteran NBC journalist and author, on Facebook.

“So disgusted that Trump continues his presidency of prejudice and discrimination against the LGBT community. Grateful that Wilton Manors officially has opposed this and encourage all levels of Americans from citizens to office holders to stand for equality and this great nation’s best ideals instead of settling for politicians of prejudice even if they hold the highest office in our land. Let’s also keep the pressure on Trump to account for this discrimination, Russia, his retreat from civil rights, and his total lack of leadership.” JUSTIN FLIPPEN, vice mayor, City of Wilton Manors, on Facebook

Niecy Nash doesn’t think she knows any gay prostitutes, but they – and every other kind of gay – most certainly know her. From her rib-tickling portrayal of Deputy Raineesha Williams in Reno 911! to Getting On and the Ryan Murphy-created Scream Queens, the Emmy-nominated actress’ career is as fabulously queer as her latest show, Claws. In the TNT sisterhood-centric drama, Nash’s money-laundering badass of a character, Desna, is the powerful, leopard-printwearing owner of a Florida nail salon that is a front for organized crime. And talk about powerful – we have Nash to thank for all the loud-and-proud clothing Desna dons like a boss. From her character’s scorchin’ drag-esque style to the possibility of her tough-as-nails character going lesbian in the second season – and the transformative power of Bacardi – Nash gave us queens plenty to scream about during our delicious new interview.

By Chris Azzopardi

Why do you think gay audiences are loving Claws?

Desna, first of all, dresses like a superhero. She’s a modern-day shero, for sure; always with a jumpsuit and some sort of belt. She’s fabulous in a lot of ways.

Some might say she dresses like a drag queen, even. You know what, I’ll take that too! ’Cause I can absolutely see that.

Do you know how many drag queens would kill for her wardrobe, though?

44 | Hotspots.LGBT

What’s funny is that the network wanted me to be in, like, a soccer mom bob with blonde highlights and it just felt wrong, and the

wardrobe felt wrong. It was a little too pulled up and I was like, “Mmmm, this is not right.” So, I dressed myself like what I felt she looked like. Just big, natural hair, booty shorts, a body suit. All of it needed to match for no reason. So, I tried to give them what I felt like she was and, luckily, they agreed… because I was fightin’ a good fight of faith there for a second!

She is the Desna the gay community needs. How do you think gay audiences might be empowered by her?

Desna is 100 percent who she is, and she is a woman who is comfortable in her skin. I think that’s the thing that we all strive for. Be happy with what it is, figure out what’s working for you, accentuate that part and push through.

From Ryan Murphy on Scream Queens to Eliot Laurence on Claws and Mark Olsen on Getting On, you seem to gravitate toward writers, directors and producers who happen to be gay men. What is it about a gay man’s perspective on female characters that keeps you coming back for more?

They give me everything I need on paper and, in turn, I give them everything they need to take it off that piece of paper and bring it to life. It’s a beautiful working relationship when somebody can just inspire you with the written word and the reciprocity is just you being inspired by the way something is real. So, it is a back and forth that is absolutely delicious. Some of these people – let me just deal with the ones you named – there was definitely a very strong con-

nective tissue from the first meeting. It’s funny, because you meet some people and instantly you’re like, “Yup, that’s my tribe, that’s my people right there.” Quite a few of my gay friends, especially. Let me just say that there are quite a few of my white gay friends who I feel are one Bacardi away from being a black woman. I don’t care what nobody says – you all got black women in yourselves.

Like many gay men, my intro to you was on Reno 911!, which featured one of our favorite gay hot messes, Terry. Yes! The rollerskating hooker.

Are there any Terrys in your life? I don’t have any friends that I know of who are prostitutes right now (laughs), but I will say that

Hotspots.LGBT | 45

unapologetic. You got a wife and a boyfriend? OK! I get asked by a lot of people, “Well, don’t you think things are moving in the right direction for black women in this industry?” I’m like, “But the world is bigger than just black women.” There are a lot of people who are underrepresented on television.

When you played a lesbian doctor on The Mindy Project in 2014, what was it like to be on the other side of the coin, sexually?

“My philosophy now is that you can be whatever you want to be. People feel you have to put blame on everything, but whether you label it or not, your truth is your truth.” I do have gay friends and they are all kinds of different. I just think when people know that you will allow them to be 100 percent who they are, they see you as a soft place to land.

As someone who’s been involved with many TV shows featuring a diverse cast, how important is it to you to take on projects with fair representation? What’s important to me is that I find projects that best emulate the real world. It’s funny, even with Claws we have gay, we have bisexual, we have transgender. We have a little bit of everything going on over there, so it looks more like the world. The other thing I appreciate about this particular show is that we don’t shine a light on how somebody is living their life or tell them what they should or should not be doing. The characters are just written and they just live. Can’t they just live? Let them live! They’re 46 | Hotspots.LGBT

I feel like when you approach a character, you want to make sure you are playing it from a real place and that it doesn’t feel like, “Oh, this is gonna be a stereotype.” You wanna lean into it in a way that just makes sense. When I had to kiss Mindy (Kaling), I remember the first time we kissed each other she was like, “Oh my god, I need a do-over. I can kiss so much better than that.” I’m like, “Girl, it’s just a show, you fine.” We had to do it again, and she was just like, “This time it’s gonna be great.”

Which kiss was better?

I liked the first one because it was the first time our characters kissed each other and it was also the first time we kissed in real life. The first kiss can sometimes be a little weird and a little awkward, so I liked that it was real life, ’cause I just kiss her out of nowhere. It’s not like we’re dating. We’re just hanging out and suddenly your boss kisses you, so I kind of like that, “Whoa, wait, wait. What’s happening?”

Do you have any other lesbian roles in the pipeline?

Well, here’s the thing: With Claws you never know what’s gonna happen. I never say never over there because ain’t no tellin’. Might just need to fly over to the other side and see what’s going

on and come on back. (Laughs) I’m not in charge of that part, but I would say that I wouldn’t be surprised.

If you do end up taking a dip in the lady pond on Claws, who are your preferred romantic interests? Mindy?

Well, I already had her. (Laughs) So, Katy Perry because Katy Perry is friggin’ adorable and fun and funny and pretty and powerful. Then I would probably have to say Queen Latifah and Judy Reyes, who plays Quiet Ann (on Claws).

we’re also socialized to believe that you can’t be a black gay man and still be one who loves God.

As a gay-affirming Christian, what’s your philosophy now on the gay community?

My philosophy now is that you can be whatever you want to be. People feel you have to put blame on everything, but whether you label it or not, your truth is your truth. And I don’t wish to live a lie on anybody. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. And yes, it can be challenging, but the people who really love you and who are standing in support of you will be all right with it. This hits home for me and I pause to talk about it because it’s not fair for me to tell that part of that story. But the one thing I don’t wish on anybody is to live a lie. That’s gotta be the hardest thing to imagine.

What can you tease your gay fans with regarding the second season of Claws?

The one thing I can tell you is that there’s another mafia coming. You know we’ve been dealing with the Dixie Mafia and the Russian Mafia and now we will get to see what happens when we do the Haitian Mafia.

As someone who grew up in a fairly devout Christian home, what was your introduction to the gay community?

Surprisingly, I knew a lot of people who were gay that went to my church. They felt very repressed. Reconciling religion and homosexuality is challenging for many gay people. Especially in the black community, and especially when it comes to men in the black community.

What do you know about that as a black woman?

I just know that it’s one of the things that we’re socialized to say, “Don’t do that, don’t you do that.” And

I remember I was doing Dancing with the Stars and Louis Van Amstel was my partner, and I never really considered the plight of the people that I knew who were gay. I stood on my battleground about black people and never really had a real point of reference for what my gay friends were experiencing. So, I do this dance with Louis and we depicted the family known as (Mildred and Richard) Loving. It was the white husband who wanted to marry the black woman and everything they went through. I was just dating my new husband and Louis said to me, “You know how much you love Jay? Now what if, for whatever reason, a law said that you could not be with him? As much as you care about him, it was against the law for you guys to get married and be together?” I started bawling like a baby. So, you gotta be able to stand in somebody else’s shoes to be able to understand what they’re going through. You gotta find a way to lean in and say, “From my vantage point, how would I feel if that were me?” Hotspots.LGBT | 47

Have you ticked off all the boxes on your super-gay summer checklist? Before you paste it into your scrapbook and start packing away the tanks and tanning oil, take a look at these last-minute activities to keep the final few weeks of lazy days fun and fancy free. Here's why.

See indie gay film Beach Rats at a theater near you

Director Eliza Hittman’s second feature film, “Beach Rats,” premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in January, and it’s been making its rounds on the festival circuit ever since. Holding firm with a solid, deserving 75-percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, _Beach Rats_ focuses on one summer in the life of Frankie, whose volatile home life in Brooklyn, N.Y., finds him juggling time with his new girlfriend and the older men he’s meeting online. The film will release nationwide, however limitedly, on Aug. 25, which means there’s still time to round up all your Grindr hoes and reserve a row at a theater near you. 54 | Hotspots.LGBT

Book your trip to New Orleans Southern Decadence What started as a small party among a group of 40 to 50 friends in 1972, Southern Decadence has expanded over the ensuing decades into a cultural phenomenon recognized by the LGBT community worldwide. More than 200,000 revelers attended last year’s event (which boosted the City of New Orleans’ economy by $215 million; let’s hear it for the pink dollar!), and this year’s hyper-sexed Mardi Gras-like festivities over Labor Day weekend promise even more debauchery. You won’t miss a single beat with accommodations at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside and its “Experience New Orleans” package, which promises proximity to the high-spirited parade and a welcome package of masks and beads, King Cake martinis at Public Belt Lounge, “Revelry Recovery Breakfast” at Le Croissant, and complimentary access to the property’s 90,000-square-foot Health Club (where sinners _and_ saints are welcome).

2 Check into Camp No Counselors LGBTQ & Friends Weekend Adult summer camps have been trending for the past few summers, and they’re expanding in popularity every year by segmenting weekends to cater to specific demographics. Camp No Counselors – featured on _Shark Tank_, if you’re a fan of the show – is dipping its proverbial toe in the homo pond at its Los Angeles outpost this fall during its LGBTQ & Friends weekend, Oct. 6 to 9. Fill your days with memorable sleepaway camp activities from when you were a kid like hiking, biking, arts and crafts, zip-lining, volleyball and more, all while making new friends and even a couple lovers while basking in the amenities of an all-inclusive backwoods experience. A portion of the weekend’s proceeds (book now before it’s sold out) will benefit r near you. Hotspots.LGBT | 55

Get wet and wild at P-Town s Carnival Week

Provincetown, Massachusetts, is a must-visit annual summer destination for many LGBTs, but if you haven't popped in for its weeklong Carnival, well, it’s time to elevate your amateur status. Nearly 90,000 visitors will make the pilgrimage to this year’s Gods and Goddesses-themed event to participate in life-parties, art fairs, a costume ball and more. If your proclivities lean a bit wetter and wilder, head to the Brass Key Guesthouse for its Poseidon’s Playground pool party, featuring DJ Andy Morris and porn-star special guest Trenton Ducati.

4 Show your true colors at a lateseason Pride

Officially, June is Pride Month (even though a certain president refuses to recognize it as such), but the truth is, Pride is celebrated all year long, figuratively and literally. If you missed the major festivals earlier this summer, make up for it by visiting other areas of the country (or international destinations) that are eager to welcome you with all the sunshine and rainbows. To find events and festivals near you – or, even better, someplace to which you can plan an adventure – check out GayPrideCalendar.com. Upcoming celebrations include Charlotte Pride (Aug. 26 and 27), Pride Vermont (Sept. 11) and Dallas Pride (Sept. 16 and 17).

Gay Florida

By Ian Maloney

wiltonmanors The Island City

W

ilton Manors is undisputedly Florida’s gay capital, and in 2010, the US census named the Island City the second gayest city in the United States, and trust us, it’s only gotten GAYER since then. The city’s nickname of The Island City comes from the fact that Wilton Manors really is an island, surrounded by two forks of the Middle River as it snakes its way towards the Intracoastal Waterway in Fort Lauderdale. Wilton Manors is also a city within a city, as Fort Lauderdale borders it on all sides. From nightlife to outdoor activities, Wilton Manors really has it all for

76 | Hotspots.LGBT

the gay traveler or resident. The city’s embrace of the LGBT community makes it a unique place in the Sunshine State; only Tampa’s GaYbor district can compare to the concentration of gay life. If you live here, hopefully Hotspots can help you find something new to do, and if you are visiting South Florida, this article will help steer you in the right direction to have a “gay old time” in the Island City.

Where to Stay

Even if you live here in South Florida, a staycation in Wilton Manors will help recharge your batteries. There are amazing boutique places where you can be papered at the spa or hang out at the pool, and do it all within a few steps of Wilton Drive, the

city’s main drag.

The Cabanas Guesthouse and Spa (2133 NE 26th St.)

The Cabanas Guesthouse and Spa has been gay owned and operated since 1999 and has welcomed tourists from all over the world. Located on the eastern edge of Wilton Manors, the resort is just a stone’s throw away from the beach as well as from shopping and gay life on Wilton Drive. The clothing optional resort features waterfront views of Middle River, heated saltwater pool, high-speed Internet, a ten-man hot tub, outdoor showers, a steam room, and gated off street parking. At the men’s day spa, you can get everything from a manicure and pedi-

cure to a massage, and even a waxing. Look for great summer discounts at the spa and summer room rates starting as low as $109. For more information, visit them online at TheCabanasGuesthouse.com

Ed Lugo Resort (2404 NE 8th Ave)

Ed Lugo Resort is collection of bungalows just steps off of Wilton Drive in the heart of all the action Wilton Manors has to offer. There are a variety of rooms, a few king suites with full kitchens, as well as two rooms that have outdoor “couples showers” with separate shower heads and controls so each person can control their own water temperature. The resort is LGBT friendly, not exclusively gay but there are clothing optional areas. Lush landscaping with beautiful flowers and plants and a hammock make this resort a heaven for guests looking to relax and unwind. Visit EdLugoResort.com for more information.

Inn on the Drive (2405 NE 7th Ave)

This Bed and Breakfast is gay owned and is just around the corner from Wilton Drive, making it the closest guesthouse to all of the action. However, they have really put a lot of

work into making it a serene place to relax. Some rooms have a pool view, while others feature a tropical garden view, but they specialize in luxury here. Summer rates start at $119 for a queen size bed and through August there is no minimum stay. Visit them online at InnOnTheDrive.com for rates and more information.

Manor Inn (2408 NE 6th Ave.)

Just steps from Wilton Drive is the Manor Inn, a gay owned smoke free establishment operates year round for guests who want to stay gay, right in the heart of Wilton Manors. They offer a variety of rooms that all feature private baths and kitchenettes. The pool and hot tub are clothing optional and available for use 24/7. Low season rates that run through December 13 start at just $89/ night. For more information, find them online at WiltonManorsInn.com You may also want to try Calypso Inn (2520 NE 6th Ave), or Island Sands Inn (2409 NE 7th Ave). Both are guesthouses in Wilton Manors Proper. In Fort Lauderdale Beach there are several other gay guesthouses, try Worthington Resorts

(543-555 N. Birch Rd), Windamar Beach Resort (543 Breakers Ave) or The Grand Resort and Spa (539 N. Birch Rd.) There The Cabanas Guesthouse & Spa

are tons of other gay friendly hotels in Fort Lauderdale. We recommend you try B Ocean Fort Lauderdale (1140 Seabreeze Blvd.) or W Fort Lauderdale (401 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd.).

Where to Play Hunters Nightclub (2232 Wilton Dr.) is the

Georgie’s Alibi

Worthington Resorts

sister club to Hunters in Palm Springs, and you can find DJs spinning on Fridays and Saturdays and a tea dance on Sunday afternoons. Georgie’s Alibi/ Monkey Bar (2266 Wilton Dr.) has been a hotspot for the LGBT community for 20 years, and offers great drinks, lots of delicious food, and ample chances to make new friends. The Manor Complex (2345 Wilton Dr.), split up into multiple sections, is one of the largest gay nightclubs in South Florida, and is almost always the late night happening spot in Wilton Manors on the weekend. Check out Bubblegum Fridays, which is 18 and over and Noche Latina Saturdays,

One of the newest additions to Wilton Drive’s legendary nightlife is Southern Nights Fort Lauderdale, which like its sister clubs in Orlando and Tampa, has the party pumping till the wee hours. Another new place on the drive is called G Spot (2031 Wilton Dr.), which, surprisingly isn’t hard to find (you see what I did there right?) and, as the name suggests,

If you are a local and you haven’t stopped in, do so to find out about special community events that you might want to get involved in. To learn more about LGBT history, consider a visit to the Stonewall

monthly exhibits as well as guest speakers who come through for lectures and book talks. Through September 3, they are presenting an exhibit called “OutWrite: LGBT Authors from the Special Collection.” Starting September 8 and running through Novemer 5, they will present “True Colors: In Our Own Words, Video Stories in Queer America.” Pay your respects to the brave men and women who have fought so hard against HIV/AIDS at The

World AIDS Museum (1201 NE 26th St #111) which opened

in 2014. The museum teaches people about the impact of HIV/AIDS on the world since it was first detected nearly 35 years ago. Check out Island City Stage (2304 N. Dixie Highway), a local theatre company which is presenting “Shorts Gone Wild 5” through September 10. This annual treat allows the audience to pick the order of the short plays so the show is different each night. With six actors presenting works from eight different playwrights, these provocative and funny pieces will have you rolling in the aisles. For tickets or more information, visit them at IslandCityStage.org.

If you are in the mood for some outdoor fun instead, there are several parks in Wilton Manors. On the south end of Wilton Drive sits Richardson Historic Park (1937 Wilton Dr.), which is home to the Atlantic Coast Kayak Company. Rent a kayak or a Standup paddle board and check out the reason why we call Wilton Manors “The Island City.” If you are really feeling brave, try to make it all the way around the city on your kayak, it’s about a 3 hour journey and is one of the best ways to get to see what makes Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale so special- the water. Hagen Park (2020 Wilton Drive) is home to a seasonal openair market on weekends, as well as tennis courts, beach volleyball courts, and the city’s Leisure Service Administrative Offices. Stop by to see what other events are going on. While you are here, you might as well get some shopping in, after all, there is nothing better than supporting local, gay owned businesses. Mix Designer

Menswear (2258 Wilton Dr.)

has it all and will have you looking good from head to toe. Right next door, visit

Ball Sportswear (2252 Wilton

Out of the Closet Thrift Store

Dr.) to find a hot new swimsuit or tank top from a gay designer that you probably can’t find anywhere else. Across the street, find True Blue Clothing (2221 Wilton Dr.)

where you can find a great selection of menswear and bathing suits. If you are looking for a bargain, stop into one of the several thrift stores throughout Wilton Manors like Out of the Closet (2097 Wilton Drive),

Boomerangs Thrift Store (2365 Wilton Dr.), or The Poverello Center (2056 N Dixie Hwy).

Each of those thrift stores sells their wares to raise money for charitable organizations. They also accept donations. If you are in the mood for some great food, you have come to the right city. South Florida restaurants almost always have a casual vibe, if you want dressy, head to NYC. We do flip flops, tank tops, and shorts here. Boat shoes, khakis and a polo shirt is what we call dressy. If you are feeling like Thai, head over to Tee-Jay

Head south on the drive to find What the Pho (2033 Wilton Drive) and some delicious Vietnamese. Also check out Sea and Olive (2390 Wilton Dr.) offering all of your Greek favorites. Stop in for their summer specials. Feed your sweet tooth at Menchies Frozen Yogurt (2607 N Dixie

If you can’t live without Starbucks (1015 NE 26th St.), have no fear. Although it’s not on the Drive, it’s there I promise. Keep your eyes open for a husband, I found mine there! (Not kidding) Dunkin Donuts is right around the corner by the gayest Publix in Florida at Five Points Plaza.

When to go

It is always a great time to visit Wilton Manors, but there are a few festivals that see the city come together at her best. Every year gets kicked off with a great New Year’s celebration with thousands of revelers taking to the bars and clubs. The

80 | Hotspots.LGBT

Shoppes of Wilton Manors allows the businesses there to take over the parking lot and a massive outdoor party ensues. It’s much the same for Halloween, also known as Gay Christmas! Wilton Manors’ Halloween party called Wicked Manors is an unbelievable street festival where guys and ghouls don amazing costumes. The city shuts down Wilton Drive and the party takes over the street as tens of thousands come out to “monster mash.” Fort Lauderdale is home to one of the busiest cruise ports (ships fellas, get your minds out of the gutter) and Wilton Manors really gets busy when gay cruises are about to leave. Wilton Manors celebrates Stonewall Pride during pride month (June), this year it was a huge success and organizers are hopeful it will continue along the same vain next year. This event also sees Wilton Drive closed down for a street festival. The bars set up on the street, vendors come out, and there is always great live entertainment and a parade to celebrate our pride. It’s a great time to come for a visit, but come prepared for showers and lots of South Florida heat.

Taina Norell uWhat was the first drag show you saw and tell me about the experience?

The first drag show I saw was in 2005 at Club Metro, which was owned back then by James Brown (my fairy godfather). I was blown away by the beauty of Lashes, Syndel, Alexis Gabrielle Sherrington, just to name a few. uWhen did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a

profession?

I knew from that very first moment I saw that show in Club Metro that I wanted

to be on that stage and entertain for my community. Ever since then I have been "twirling" around the nation.

uWho is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother and why?

My drag mother is the legendary Erika Norell. I cant name just one queen other than my mother as there are so many. Some of the ones I love or loved (some are no longer with us) are: Erica Andrews, Tajma Hall, Necole Phillips, Danielle Hunter, Amy Demilo, Esme Russell, and Shae Shae Lareese. uWhat’s your favorite number to perform and why?

I love performing anything by Whitney Houston, I can feel her energy all around me.

uWhat’s the best thing that has happened to you in drag?

I would have to say that the best that have happened to me in drag is that we are very fortunate to constantly meeting new people and touch their hearts. I strongly believe in the saying “Treat others how you want to be treated.” So I have to say I am thankful for each and every one of those souls I have touched and made a difference in their lives. It's the most rewarding feeling I have ever experienced.

uWhat differentiates you from other Queens (Makes you Unique)?

Ouch! This is a hard one. We are all unique in our own way. But I do believe that we are all brothers and sisters at the end of the day.

uTell me something most people don’t know about you?

ueens we

Why We Love Her! She is Pretty, oh so pretty! She follows her dreams

She has a wonderful husband who is not in the club scene at all She has a special bond with her mother Most people don't know I actually graduated from medical assistant school. I wanted to give something to my mother and make her feel proud of me. I recently became intrigued with fashion, although from all my postings on Facebook I suspect this is no longer a secret. Fashion has been something that has always been in the back of my mind, and I am proud of myself for pushing forward, beating the demons, and making it a reality. uWhat does the future hold?

I wish I knew the answer to this question, but for now am staying focused on starting fashion school and graduating as a Fashion Designer. I am very intrigued and excited about the future, but I rather live this very moment right now.

HOT BODIES

OVERCOME THOSE Workout

Doldrums 90 | Hotspots.LGBT

By Tom Bonanti

Has the sound of clanking weights and grunting he-men at the gym become a real chore for you to endure? Has that pricey new piece of home exercise equipment become nothing more than a clothes rack in the corner of your spare bedroom? Chances are you’re just experiencing good oldfashioned burnout with your present

workout routine. In honor of the close of summer, here are some tips to help you put the mojo back into your military presses and rekindle some of the burn in those bulging biceps! • Vary your workout times. Take advantage, if you can, of a more relaxed summer schedule to vary your workout times. Experience the differences in your energy levels as well as the gym ambiance when you work out at different times of the day. • Focus on cardio or vice-versa. If you’re burned out on lifting weights, and nothing seems to help, focus on cardiovascular work for awhile (or focus on pumping iron if you’re sick of cardio). • Think outside the box. Use a variety of

dumbbells, barbells, cables and machines to get your pump. Take a class, employ a personal trainer for some sessions, get a workout partner. Shake things up a little! • Split up your routine. If your schedule permits, go to the gym twice per day for shorter more intense periods of training. For example, in the AM before work, do chest. In the PM, hit biceps and make ’em burn! • Employ super-sets. Work two opposing muscle groups (like chest and back, biceps and triceps, hamstrings and quadriceps, etc.) alternately. This allows you to pick up your pace because as one muscle group is fatigued, you begin working another that isn’t. It can also get your heart rate in the target zone and make your weight training have aerobic benefits. • Perform drop sets. Push yourself a little. Start with a fairly heavy weight, work just about to failure (when you can’t do another rep!), cut the weight back, maybe half, then go to failure once again. • Be a copycat. Check out guys who look good and seem to know what they’re doing. Don’t be afraid to jump right in and do what they’re doing on the machine or with weights. Most “built” dudes consider it a compliment if you politely ask them questions about their workouts. • Take a real vacation. Sometimes you just need some time off from the gym and working out to let your body rest and your mind refocus. Just don’t become a couch potato or bar-fly! Instead employ “active” periods of rest whereby you stay physically active while you’re taking a break from the gym. Walk on the beach, meditate, try a yoga class, swim, get a massage; you get the picture. uTom Bonanti is a certified fitness trainer and massage therapist (MA#40288) with his own private facility in Fort Lauderdale. www.pumpninc.com . DONALD TRUMP

A

BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI

s I write this, the name of the woman killed while protesting white supremacist Nazi althumans has just been released. Heather Heyer, 32 years old, was murdered at a Nazi rally by a Nazi terrorist slamming his car into a crowd. In America. In 2017. If you find yourself totally dumbstruck by this or saying, “This is not the America I know!” I’m going to go ahead and guess that you’re white and of some kind of Christian ancestry. Not that there’s anything wrong with being white or even Christian for that matter. It’s just that white Christians in America — especially the heterosexual male ones — have it real good. So good that they can ignore racism and anti-Semitism and write off white supremacist Nazis as a fringe element

96 | Hotspots.LGBT

that should just be ignored. This is not as easy to do if you’re Jewish, say, or African American. Then the evil shit coming out of the mouths of Nazis is aimed directly at you. You don’t have the privilege of ignoring it. While the white right is always crying about being discriminated against in America, that’s total bullshit. America has a long, deeply rooted racist history which has never ended for people of color. Obama’s election signaled “the end of racism” only for whom racism was essentially already over. Don’t get me wrong. Obama winning the presidency (twice!) was a historic victory and I don’t begrudge anyone their pride in that. But the fact that so many white people were completely unprepared for a Trump presidency is pretty telling. This is part of why there are so many

Trump’s election has given racists the permission and recognition they’ve been longing for. Trump ran a racist campaign.”

white people who said they believed that racism increased under Barack Obama (and why many of them even blame him for it). Racism didn’t get worse. It just got more visible. White people, for whom the dayto-day racism had been largely invisible, suddenly started seeing it everywhere in a backlash against our first black president. Well, if racism dared show its ugly face in public with Obama as President, under Trump racism is basically streaking naked through the streets with impunity, rubbing its genitals on anything and everything. A white guy who a couple of years ago might have limited his racist thoughts to memes posted in certain dark corners of Reddit now feels totally fine raising a blazing pitchfork at a public rally in front of news cameras. Trump’s election has given racists the permission and recognition they’ve been longing for. Trump ran a racist campaign. Racist people then voted for him (was everyone who voted for Trump racist? I can’t

answer that. I can say that in order to vote for Trump you had to be at least not bothered by racism, which is kind

of a hard thing to be neutral about). Trump then brought racists into the White House and Department of Justice (Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller, Jeff Sessions, just to name a few high profile white supremacist faces). So it’s really not a surprise that racists read this as a green light to go full Breitbart in public. So while Trump may not have driven the car that killed Heather Heyer and injured so many others - while he may not have held a lit tiki torch while screaming, “White lives matter,” make no mistake that Trump is the Grand Wizard of this horrific nationwide parade.

THE IS OUT... OUT... THESECRET SECRET IS COMING THIS SEPTEMBER COMING THIS SEPTEMBER

FIVE QUESTIONS

TED DEUTCH

GAY FLORIDA’S CONGRESSMAN SPEAKS OUT By Peter Jackson

C

1

ongressman Ted Deutch is a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives for Florida’s 22nd congressional district which includes parts of Broward and Palm Beach Counties. A big proponent of equality and LGBT – his support and record go back years – Deutch has lashed out recently against President Trump’s transgender ban in the military, which he called “hateful and wrong.” Hotspots caught up with the Congressman prior to his Town Hall meeting in Fort Lauderdale on Aug 30 and Boca Raton on August 31 (details at teddeutch.house.gov):

104 | Hotspots.LGBT

uCongressman, you’ve been a huge supporter of

LGBT equality for years. In fact, in 2010, you said, “Gays and lesbians should have the same rights as all American citizens including the rights to have committed same-sex relationships with the right of marriage and adoption.” What are your thoughts on the status of LGBT rights in America today under the Trump administration?

I think this President has made his disregard for the LGBT community quite clear through his policies and actions. Just look at his call for a ban on transgender men and women serving in our military! Since his election he has done nothing to prioritize progress towards a more inclusive, equal

society. If he was serious about protecting the LGBT community, he would pressure the Congressional leadership of his own party to bring the LGBT Equality Act up for a vote, a bill with nearly 200 bipartisan cosponsors.

2

uYou called President Trump’s ban on transgender

troops serving in the military in any capacity “meanspirited, hateful and wrong.” With the widespread backlash that has followed – including a condemnation of the ban by 56 retired Generals and Admirals – do you see the president having to retreat on this policy decision?

The President created a lot of confusion over his tweet that he would ban transgender Americans from serving. Contrary to what he claimed, he had not discussed the issue with leaders at the Defense Department. These are brave Americans who are willing to risk their lives for our nation, regardless of their gender. Most constitutional law experts agree that it is blatantly unconstitutional. In addition, the number of LGBT allies in Congress has been growing, and it’s my hope that common sense and common decency will block this policy from moving forward, regardless of whether the President still thinks such an offensive, harmful policy is a good idea.

3

uYou have just introduced a bill to offer Medicare Buy-

in for older Americans –which, importantly, would lower the Medicare eligibility age to 50. Tell us about the benefits of this bill, which affects a large number of your LGBT constituents, especially in Broward County.

Access to health care should be a right in this country. At some point in every person’s life, health care will be a major personal issue. And the chances that you will need it go up as you get older. This bill would offer the option to older Americans to join Medicare at age 50. That would mean bringing a younger, healthier population into the Medicare program, while reducing the age and average health needs of people in the private market. That means lower costs for both groups, and better access to care. Since it was first established in 1965, Medicare has been a highly cost-effective program, offering affordable health care plans for 57 million Americans today. It makes sense to build on that success. uThere have been calls since Hillary Clinton’s

spectacular defeat for introspection if not reinvention within the Democratic Party. Is this happening? What

have the Democrats learned?

4

The Democratic Party has the vision for America that will empower us all to achieve more and live fuller and better lives. The Democratic Party is willing to do more than pay lip service to the idea that diversity makes us stronger, that we can’t leave certain segments out of education, our economy, and our government. Trump’s win was certainly a surprise, but I don’t believe it should change the core of our priorities. Democrats believe that all Americans, regardless of who they are, where they live, or what they believe, deserve a better deal for themselves and their families, and a government that helps them respond to the dramatic changes in our economy. uYou’ll be holding a town hall meeting in

Fort Lauderdale on Aug. 30 where you will be discussing, no doubt, a broad spectrum of topics. What top 3 issues in America today concern you the most?

Climate change: Florida attracts visitors from all over the world who love our nature, our beaches, and our environment. And we know that those things are already threatened by effects of climate change. That’s why I’m working across the aisle, bringing in Republican voices from areas around the country that are also feeling the threat of climate change, to come up with bipartisan solutions to this growing problem. Healthcare: We won a dramatic battle on health care just before the August break in Washington, but the fight isn’t over yet. Many constituents have shared stories of how the ACA has protected their health and their financial security. My Democratic colleagues and I are committed to improving our healthcare system, not imploding it as President Trump wants. American leadership: President Trump’s chaotic foreign policy, his attempts to gut our diplomatic budget, his withdrawal from the Paris Accords, and his suspicious relationship with Vladimir Putin, weaken America’s leadership in the world, and his moral equivalency after Charlottesville diminishes the moral authority of the United States. uFor more information, go to teddeutch.house.

NEED WOOD

ARE SOME TRULY

H

By Woody Miller

LABELS

IMPORTANT?

ey, Woody! I was at a bar the other night and met this really great guy. As the bewitching hour came I asked him if he’d like to go home with me. “It depends,” he said. “Are you a top or a bottom?” I’m kind of a modest guy. I was floored, speechless. “Well?” he pressed me. I finally said “Why does it matter?” and he said, “Because I feel like f--king tonight and if you don’t want to get f--ked there’s no point in going home together.” I ended up not going home with him because I was so insulted. My question: Was I wrong for insisting on a little class? — Defiant

y

Hey Woody! Sometimes, when I c-me, I lose the hearing in my right ear. It comes back after a few minutes, but this can’t be right. Am I in for something terrible as time goes by? — Don’t want to hear it

y

Dear Defiant: I think asking a guy if he’s a top or a bottom is a pretty tacky thing to do, and it belies the shallow, superficial take most gay men have about sex. Sex flows from the energy between two people. Sometimes that energy translates into f--king, getting f--ked, bl-wn, getting bl-wn, getting a handj-b, giving a handj-b or none of the above or all of the above, some of the time, none of the time or all of the time--depending on the situation, the players, and the conditions. To diminish the glorious and limitless possibilities of sex down to two cold and calculating categories—top and bottom—is one of the great embarrassments of gay culture we are inexplicably proud of. The drive to categorization is a very male thing, and particularly a very GAY male thing. We live in a culture that insists, no, REVERES, the idea of living out of an artificiallyconstructed identity. Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual,

Transgendered, Questioning, everyone must have labels and those labels must be used by everyone. Labels are helpful to oppressed people who are invisible to each other. They help build bridges between people who thought they were the only ones “like that.” But the helpful labels almost always turn to psychic prisons, preventing you from experiencing that which lies beyond the bars you’ve constructed for yourself. And it also limits people from experiencing you as more than the prisoner within those bars. So I don’t agree with this whole top/bottom dichotomy. It diminishes us, it doesn’t serve us, and it perpetuates the narrow belief that penetration is the only acceptable sexual act.

Dear Don’t: It could be a particular sexual position aggravating a simple condition like earwax buildup or nasal congestion. But it could be the eustachian tubes—the narrow tubes connecting the nose to the ears. These tubes contain blood vessels and the site of other vascular changes associated with orgasm. A faster heart rate and increased blood pressure doesn’t just swell your jeans, it also has the potential of swelling these tubes, which could end up causing temporary deafness. Go see an ear, nose and throat doctor and find out.

axton Wheeler is not only one of the sexiest (have you seen that hairy body and those legs‌.DAMN), and hard working men in Adult Film, but it turns out he is also a nice guy! He has been in over 70 scenes and was nominated for most masculine at the Grabby's and was awarded best group scene many times. In addition, he was voted AEBN #1 model for sales worldwide. It was a pleasure to sit down with Jaxton just a week before he appears live at the world famous Boardwalk over Labor Day Weekend (Fri-Sun Sept 1, 2, and 3). Before we talk about your Adult Film Career, we need to talk about your unbelievable body. When did you start working out and how long did it take you to get in this incredible shape? I started when I was 9 years old in athletics, but I didn't start the gym heavy until I was around 20. I started o as skinny, but from a very early age my body responded fast to any type of athletic training. Going on 20-21 I decided to try body building and within a short amount of

Speaking of your body, how did you get those incredible legs? I grew up in Florida running on the beach and then I played football. I was also a sprinter and jumper. I was a decathlete.

How did you get into the Adult ilm industry? I was already a stripper but once I had my back injury, I needed something else to do. I was in Boston and got asked to do some nude photos and the photographer knew the owner of Chaos men in Texas. He asked me if he can pass my information on to him and I said yes. The rest is history.

I know you started out bare backing and I heard you stopped. What changed your mind? Actually, I'm ok with it as long as the testing is done properly. That's why I work a lot with Men.com as they are very strict with testing. But I do work a lot with
