HURRICANE IRMA Now that we have felt the mighty wrath of hurricane Irma, we do what we do best; pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and (well you know the rest)… In truth, things could have been a lot worse had we not been prepared. There is little doubt that many of us have been shaken as we mourn for those who are still recovering and those who may even have lost loved ones. It's time to take a deep breath and take stock in all that makes life so amazing. Irma reminded us to never be complacent of life for granted. Life is what you choose it to be so, you can either sit back and ride out the storm or you can stand up and get right back out there and grab it for all that it is worth. We in the LGBT community know what it means to fight the good battle. Yes, we paid the price
along the way from Stonewall to marriage equality and yes, even the unimaginable tragedy in Orlando. And yet here we are, stronger and proud as ever. Proof that as a community, we can weather any storm when we stand together. So take time to reflect on all that is wonderful in the world and, more importantly, ask yourself what you can do to make it even better. I could not be more proud of our community and our Hotspots family who were there for each other from the first gust of wind to the sound of heavy machinery cleaning up the aftermath. We soldier on and we care of each other as it should be, promising never to forget.

The best chatter on Facebook this week “It is morally wrong and economically unsound for a nation built by immigrants to turn them away. Comprehensive immigration reform is what is needed, not a heartless termination of a program that gives hope and opportunity to so many seeking their piece of the American Dream. We urge Congress to act swiftly and justly to ensure that these DREAMers are protected and given the chance to thrive legally in America.” JUSTIN NELSON and CHANCE MITCHELL, co-founders of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), in a statement on the dissolution of DACA. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals was an American immigration policy that allowed some individuals who entered the country illegally as minors to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and to be eligible for a work permit. There are an estimated 75,000 LGBT DREAMers in the U.S.

TAMPA bay “Much of Tampa’s LGBT activity is centered around the GaYbor neighborhood in Ybor City.”
M
Tampa Bay was “discovered” by the Europeans over 400 years ago. The Spanish, who were the first Europeans to arrive, called the area they “found,” Bahia del Espiritu Santo but within a few decades maps show it called Bahia Tampa or Tampa Bay. It was the opening of a military base, Fort Brooke, at the mouth of the Hillsborough River two centuries ago that caused the region to grow. A number of cities across Tampa Bay were formed: Tampa was first, then Clearwater (home to its own base, Fort Harrison), then Bradenton, and finally St. Petersburg.
36 | Hotspots.LGBT
Now, over four million people live in Tampa Bay, with much of the action centered on its two largest cities: Tampa to the east, in Hillsborough County; and St. Petersburg to the west, in Pinellas County. Everyone in Tampa Bay has a “side” they prefer: St. Petersburg residents consider Tampa too fast-paced, while Tampa residents consider St. Petersburg a bit slow-going. Both of these energies, such a short distance from each other, ensure Tampa Bay has the best of both worlds. Much of Tampa’s LGBT activity is centered around the GaYbor neighborhood in Ybor City. This historic neighborhood is just northeast of downtown Tampa and is named after cigar factory owner Vicente Martinez
Ybor. Learn more about Ybor City and the GaYbor district in our “where to play” section in this article. Unlike Tampa, St. Pete doesn’t have a main gay neighborhood, the community there is more spread out in several different places. While this may seem like a downfall- no gay mecca, it really means that the entire city has a gay friendly vibe- a fact that is proven out year after year as St. Pete holds Florida’s largest LGBT Pride festival. However, having said that, there is a larger concentration of LGBT nightlife and LGBT owned businesses along the Central Avenue corridor in St. Pete. Don’t miss this area for some fantastic things to do.

In Tampa, a lot of the LGBT nightlife is centered around Ybor City, an area of town that used to be well-known for its cigar manufacturing and is now
a nightlife hub for Tampanians both gay and straight. The area on 7th Avenue from Centro Ybor down to 14th Street is a budding area for LGBT-owned and LGBT-friendly businesses called the GaYBOR District. If you haven’t gotten your fill of wild animals, be sure to stop off at the Lowry Park Zoo (1101 W Sligh Ave, Tampa), which features, among other attractions, a boat tour, giraffe feeding and camel rides and features more than 60 acres of wildlife and has been named one of the top zoological parks in the state. Raymond James Stadium (4201 N Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa) plays host to many blockbuster concerts (Beyoncé, Taylor Swift), and is also the home of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In downtown, the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning plays at Amalie Arena (401 Channelside Dr, Tampa), as do many other entertainment acts in the lineup this fall and summer are Mumford and Sons,
Bruno Mars, and Country crooners Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. The downtown area has quite a few fun things to see, such as the picturesque campus of the University of Tampa, which includes the Henry B. Plant Museum (401 W Kennedy Blvd, Tampa). Originally a hotel, the Moorish designs inspired future buildings at the adjoining university. Walk back across the bridge and you will get to see the beautiful Curtis Hixon Waterfront
Park (600 N Ashley Dr, Tampa). The Straz Center for the Performing Arts (1010 N Macinnes Pl, Tampa),
where the Broadway in Tampa series takes the stage (among other productions), is nearby. This year’s Broadway season kicks off with “Rent”, continues with Gloria Estefan’s “Get on Your Feet”, and also includes the smash hit “Fun Home.” Busch Gardens
BayWalk. There are many shops and restaurants in this complex, and there’s even a movie theater! If you want something a little more highbrow and cerebral, you can visit the Museum of Fine Arts (255 Beach Dr NE, St. Pete) and the Salvador Dali Museum (1 Dali Blvd, St. Pete) which features the largest collection of Dali works and memorabilia outside his native Spain. Right next to the Dali Museum is the Mahaffey Theater (400 1st Street South, St. Pete), a performing arts hall located right on the water, yielding picturesque views. If you’re not done experiencing the beauty in the downtown area, Sunken Gardens (1825 4th St N, St. Pete) bills itself as the city’s “oldest living museum,” featuring four acres of botanical gardens right in the heart of the city.

Ybor City and Channelside are very close to downtown Tampa. Visit the Ybor City Museum (1818 E 9th Ave, Tampa) to see how Tampa
grew to become the multicultural city it is today. Channelside is home to The Florida Aquarium (701 Channelside Dr, Tampa), the largest such institution in the state, featuring marine life exhibits and interactive dolphin tours.
St. Petersburg’s downtown is vibrant and home

NATIVE ENGAGER Tori Amos talks gay mentors, not being politically distracted by the ‘master showman' and her 'underworld' years in D.C. ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Tori Amos' mind is one of the greatest wonders of the music world. For over three decades, via an oeuvre as unpredictable as the muses that guide her, that very mind has been a trove of lyrical salvation and a divine mé lange of eccentricities, insight, imagination and, as I discovered during our illuminating exchange, even "Mean Girls" references. Before last year's political turn of events, the piano virtuoso took a summer road trip through North Carolina's Smoky Mountains to reconnect to her familial roots, setting into motion her nature-in luenced 15th studio album, "Native Invader". Featuring some of her best music in years, as in luenced by these divisive times and a speech-crippling stroke her mother suffered in January, the album's emotional core is resilient and healing despite “a cluster of hostile humans who side with their warlords of hate,” as she brazenly sings, calling for us to “rehumanize.” Amos, 54, took me to every remote corner of her meandering mind during our recent interview, name-dropping everyone from Persephone to Regina George and the two gay men who helped transform her into "the" Tori Amos. But there's more: “the new invasion of the body snatchers,” exercising to rap, being postmenopausal in 2017 America, the prospect of a Vegas show with hot male dancers and also Washington D.C., the “underworld” where she launched her career, unknowingly performing for political players who would set the stage for crucial issues

by Chris Azzopardi Amos and the entire country are now facing.
I am feeling grateful to have gone to bed the last few nights with "Native Invader" being the last thing I heard. Oh, good. I'm glad it took you to dreamland.
And it's very possible it will be taking me to dreamland for the next few years, if you know what I'm saying. (Laughs) Well, the “Dream King” is on there too in “Mary's Eyes,” so everybody can go to dreamland.
You talk about being a “safe place” on the album's comforting second song, “Wings,” and since the beginning of your career, you have been that safe place for many gay men, myself included. Well, they were a safe place for me when I was 13. Then, when I was 16 I just happened to work at a place not far from the White House, which is very core to "Native Invader" because I cut my teeth professionally playing in the belly of the beast in Washington, if you see what I mean. Lobbyists, people in different departments; it was the Department of the Interior, Department of Agriculture, and so on and so forth. You gotta igure that anybody in Congress might have been rolling through those doors. That's just the establishments that I was working in when I was 16. But anyway, my point to you is... there was a point. What were we talking about?
You were talking about safe places, and you said that as a teenager, the gay community was your safe place. Yes, there was one waiter that was a bit of a... I won't say a bully, but he was one of those guys at the time, because you've gotta imagine I was 16, so what was that, 1979? So, you know, longer hair, mustache. He was always pushing me to think about all the bad things that could happen and his foil was this beautiful gay man called Joey. Joey was just the most supportive kind, and he would admonish Ray and Ray was macho. He was a macho gay guy, but probably in very protective mode. So did Joey make you feel special? Joey taught me how to sit. Joey taught me how to walk. Joey walked me through my crushes. And Ray would be chiding all the time and explaining why I would never get that guy. Ray made Regina George look like Julie Andrews in "The Sound of Music".
What song did your gay audiences most connect with then? They would ask me for all kinds of things. It was more about them realizing I needed training. Not with Joey and Ray. I was kind of a pro by then. But at 13, when I was in (a gay bar called) Mr. Henry's in Georgetown, which was across town, that was sacred. That wasn't the Congress set, although you have to igure some head of something was sneaking in there (laughs). (But the gay community) was more about, “Oh, you need to learn this song. You need to learn that.” They would say, “OK, learn these songs and come back next week,”
because they were helping me ill out my repertoire. They were really pushing me o more popular songs. I had Joni Mitchell covered. I had Elton John covered. I had T Beatles covered. So, they were asking me things that I didn't have in my repertoire. can't remember now (which songs), but I remember them giving me loads of reques for the next week and then I would go and learn them all and then they'd give me more.
And not much has changed in that regard. (Laughs) Yes, yes. "Nothing" has change
Can you tell me about the conversation you were having with people in the LGBTQ community that led to the song on "Native Invader"? I will tell you speci ically what was goin on with the people that I know who are a part of the LGBTQ community, but there were messages coming through friends of friends – acquaintances and then friends – because Putin is not the only one with a back channel on planet Earth. You with m So, that means somebody who might be a civil servant or somebody who might be working in the intelligence community or somebody who might be a part of the science community will get to somebody who will get to somebody whose mother will then get to somebody who gets to me So that's how it works. tears rolling down his face. He said, “I can't explain it.” I said, “It's like they're being emotionally cannibalized – is that correct?” He said, “OK, keep going.”
How did that particular conversation work itself into the album? It's a thread, not a song, through the album.
understand that this movement has been going on since 1980 when one of the Koch brothers was running on a ticket as a vice president against Reagan and then clearly the penny dropped that one doesn't need to be president to be one of the American oligarchs that is possibly running Washington? I didn't come up with this myself! I'm a piano player! I mean, come on, everybody knows, I'm a conduit. (Laughs)
Going back to the messages from people in the LGBTQ community: How did those in luence "Native Invader"? One of the things that I was being told by somebody who is very much in that community was that (he was being) consumed by the energy that was out there – an attacking, bullying energy. And the news cycle. This person got to me personally and sat me down and said, “I'm losing friends.” I said, “To what?” This was a speci ic person, a gay man, and he said to me, “I'm losing them to a force. It's terrifying because it's zombielike.” And it wasn't funny. There were tears in the eyes. It wasn't a zombie joke. You know, everybody likes a good zombie joke. (My daughter) Tash being one of them. But this wasn't funny. And I said, “OK, this is fascinating, this is a different invasion of the body snatchers.” And there were, again,

Had you ever considered a more direct approach to the current political landscape you're addressing on this album, perhaps in the same vein as “Yo George” from "American Doll Posse"? Why not just call this album or a song on the album “Yo Donald”? No, because that would be weak. Let's walk this through. The great thing about being nonreactive, postmenopausal, which cannot be possessed until you have experienced it, you absolutely cannot get this one thing; all the younger women cannot have this with all the money in the world, do you know why? Because they bleed. When you sit at the metaphorical ire, Chris, and you don't bleed, what is it? It's called containment. That is the state of being. The issues are not about one name. The issues are about a movement and the master showman is a distraction. Don't give it the energy. There are no conundrums there. You don't need quantum physics, which I don't know, but I like the phrase. “Alice In Quantumland” this is not. There is no mystery. The best thing that the community can do: treat it with neutrality. Don't give it energy.
Apply your energy elsewhere and do your research, because there are things going on around us with Democracy. You have to ask yourself, little by little, what's going on at the EPA, what's going on at the Department of the Interior – that's far more interesting.
You offer far more light than one might imagine from an album that's rooted in the chaos of our current political climate. I wonder how the overall mood of the album took shape and whether you ever felt like you had to stop yourself from going too dark. I think “Climb” is dark. “Climb” is probably the darkest place, and that is a very dark place.
What do you think an album about this past election would've sounded like if Tori of "Boys for Pele" or "From the Choirgirl Hotel" wrote it? Well, look, those albums can be played and are relevant now. "Pele" is relevant now because "Pele" is railing against the patriarchy, but "Native Invader" is invading concepts like freedom that have been hijacked by some of these super PACs, by these think tanks. Again, don't get distracted by people who are mainly in the news cycle all the time. You've gotta understand, if for some reason they walked away and decided
to just not be in that position anymore, you still have a movement to deal with. These seeds go back. (Supreme Court Justice Neil) Gorsuch's mother was head of the EPA in the '80s. Not that he can't be a fair judge, not that he didn't learn, not that he doesn't have integrity – he might have integrity. Bu what we have to understand is the EPA was big corp in the '80s. I was playing piano bar for those people as a teenager and Joey and Ray would say, “Do you know who so and so is?” And I'd say, “What? What are you talking about?” I didn't know at the time that I was playing for some of these players that planted that seed. I was right in the middle of it all. It's sort of like Persephone. was living the Persephone myth. I had no idea I was in the underworld.
Switching gears to your tour in support of "Native Invader", which of the rare “girls” are itching to be played this go 'round? Yeah, that's fair enough. I haven't igured it out yet, and if you guys and ladies have any ideas then it's always welcome, becaus I think it's gonna be very collaborative this tour. I think it'll be an exchange of ideas and building. Every night will be different. When I'm alone I can really do that; there's lexibility to it. show. It's really demanding. The physicality is beyond explaining, to myself. But it gives me a lexibility. And these times – things are happening every day that I need to be able to throw out a whole show and do a whole different one, if need must. No more one-woman shows? I'm talking about a one-woman show. I'm not talking about not performing. I would love to have, you know, hot male dancers.
Ha! I would love for you to have hot male dancers. Maybe that's the Vegas show.
You've been known to cover some classics on tour but also some modern pop, like Rihanna's “We Found Love.” Are there any pop songs from the last few years you think might it the vibe of this tour? Yeah, maybe. And maybe I need to look at some rap. It's my niece – my niece is Kelsey (Dobyns) and any time we do a little work out she makes me do it to rap. I have no idea what any of the rap is that I've heard. I've heard all kinds of rap. She's throwing these beats down and I don't know what I'm listening to. Are you a fan of any of it? No. I'm not a fan of rap. All the rappers know I'm not a fan. However, I can look at the rap and
say, “This is well produced,” and put my producer hat on and say, “I like the low of this, the language; I like the rhythm. Yeah, I'm into it.” But I'm a melody person. So, I appreciate the form and I respect it, but I want Freddie (Mercury). I want a melody. I want “Killer Queen.” I want “Somebody to Love.” And as we've established, hot male dancers. And hot male dancers! I'm a laming queen, what can I say?

HURRICANE BRINGS ABOUT CHANCE MEETING OF TV NEWS HUNKS
It took Hurricane Irma to bring together two of the hottest gay hunks on television news: CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Florida’s own NBC 6 Miami’s Jamie Guirola. The two were photographed in Orlando while covering the hurricane. (Sigh… wish we were there!)
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN ON STAGE
In what will be music to the ears of gay fans around the globe, the 2005 groundbreaking film Brokeback Mountain is (finally) coming to the stage! Based on Annie Proulx’s 1997 short story of the same title, the story is about two gay cowboys – Ennis del Mar, played by Heath Ledger in the film, and Jack Twist, played by Jake Gyllenhaal – who engage in a secret 20-year love affair. Details on the stage version are few, but sources tell Hotspots the premiere will take place in London in 2018.

SMART PHONES AREN’T JUST FOR TALKING ANY MORE…
Lots of things are changing around us – including how consumers are using their smart phones. New research indicates shoppers are using their personal computers less and their smart phones more than ever. Consider these facts: • Traffic from smartphones to retail web sites grew from 44% to 59% in Q2 2017. • Mobile devices accounted for 44% of purchase orders placed online in Q2 2017, up from 32% in 2015. • Orders placed on personal computers fell from 68% to 56%. • Mobile’s role is growing among in-store shoppers, too: 59% used their mobile devices for shopping intelligence (price comparisons) while actually inside stores.

over dumbbell one arm row. Go back and forth for three sets of each. Take a break and then alternate incline dumbbell presses and wide grip lat pull downs. Supersets create balance and joint strength and allow one muscle group a brief rest while you blast its opposing muscle group. Compound sets are great especially if you have a problem muscle group that won't grow. Compound sets are two intense exercises for the same muscle group. For example, perform a set of barbell curls to exhaustion, then move to a set of killer preacher curls to isolate those twin peaks. If you're really cruising for a burn, go for tri-sets. This means simply that you add a third or even a fourth exercise to the above routine as you max out those mighty arms. Forced reps are a great way to push muscles just a little harder, once they've been pretty much exhausted. Just when you think you can't do another curl, press or squat, recruit someone else's muscles to help you! That's right, get a trainer, partner, or buddy to help you squeeze out a couple of forced reps before you rack your weights and call it quits. Just make sure your form doesn't suffer. Focus on the negative or eccentric contraction during an exercise. For example, during a bicep curl, explode as you bring the
weight to your chin (concentric or positive contraction) then as you lower the weight, slow down and focus as you push your muscles to a new level of fatigue. Try doing negatives with bi's, tri's, chest, legs, etc., once a month to maximize size and strength. Remember, doing negatives every workout can lead to over- training, so once or twice a month should be enough to make you grow without injuring yourself. SCOTT LIVELY BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI
y wife and I just celebrated our 20th anniversary. And do you know who else is celebrating 20 years? World Nut Daily, a website that hosts conservative voices that not only don’t consider my wife and I to be married, but don’t even think that we should, or even do, exist. One such marriage equality denier and man who has spent years authoring antiLGBTQ hot takes is Scott Lively, president of Defend the Family International. Lively’s Sept. 8 column is basically a love letter to Exodus International, a totally discredited group that purported to turn gays and lesbians straight with prayer. The founder of Exodus eventually left and was all, “Welp, I’m still gay. This group is bullshit. Sorry.” Lively, however, thinks it was great. “Though I have never experienced samesex attraction,” Lively begins making sure you know he ain’t no homo, former or current,
76 | Hotspots.LGBT
“I attended several Exodus conferences and other functions.” So why did Lively hang out at Exodus gatherings if he’s a good heterosexual Christian? Because he loves gays, in a totally non-gay way, of course. “I have always had a special place in my heart for ‘gay’ strugglers and have ministered to many individuals over the years as an aspect of my Bible-based Christian activism,” Lively said. Translation: “I think gay people are disgusting, incapable of God’s love, and unworthy of romantic partnership and I have spent my professional life spreading that message because I am a creep.” The place in his heart for gays is so special that he claims they have a “compulsive behavioral disorder.” “As with any compulsive behavioral disorder, homosexuality is tough to overcome,” Lively writes. “There’s an aspect
As with any compulsive behavioral disorder, homosexuality is tough to overcome” of physiology involved in all addictions - drugs, alcohol, food, gambling, video games, porn, whatever - that addicts the struggler to his or her own pleasure-related brain chemicals that are released when they act out.” You know those “pleasure-related brain chemicals” that are released when a person meets someone they are are attracted to? When straight men and women feel that it’s called love. When gays and lesbians feel it, it’s called “addiction.” Same feeling, different bodies. It’s interesting that Lively claims to “have never experienced same-sex attraction,” yet he’s so sure same-sex attraction is a vice and addiction. He cites his own struggles with addiction as proof that he’s an expert on addiction and recovery. “I was miraculously healed of drug and alcohol addiction in 1986 - on my knees in prayer at a treatment center - after 16 years of bondage that started at the age of 12,” he writes. “I never had another desire to drink or take drugs ever again.” Well, good for him if that’s the case. But that doesn’t make him an expert on how gay people feel or don’t feel. He can’t understand why LGBTQ people and allies were so strongly against the ex-gay
“cure” lie that Exodus pushed (and Lively still pushes). “Exodus International,” he writes, “suffered the wrath of the powerful LGBT political movement from Day 1 because every one of its members was living proof that homosexual selfindulgence is a choice.” No. Every one of its members was living proof that people who’ve been beaten down by discrimination and hate will subject themselves to psychological torture in the hopes that the pain will stop. Hating LGBTQ people is a choice. Being Christian is a choice. Believing that Christianity is incompatible with LGBTQ people is a choice. Lively is living proof that anti-LGBTQ indulgence is a choice. No doubt Lively’s own pleasurerelated brain chemicals are released

Marianela’s upbringing was amidst walls that were decorated with copies of Renaissance Period paintings. They awakened a curiosity, and she was very much intrigued by its perplexities. Nela is the result of Marianela’s search to combine traditional art with contemporary graphics. After working as an artist for over 20 years and falling in love with Pop Art, she decided to bring back those masterpieces with a modern edge. She deeply believes that art is directly associated with the visual communication.

NEED WOOD
By Woody Miller
WOODY’S
GOT TALENT! Dear Waiting:
y
H
ey Woody! What are your favorite gay jokes? --- Waiting for a chuckle
Here are my six favorites:
y
Joke #1 Why do gay men name their penises? *Because they want to be on a first-name basis with the person who makes all their decisions.* Joke #2 Three guys are standing over the ashes of their deceased lovers. The first guy says,”Jim, he loved the ocean! I’m going to to take his ashes out on a boat and sprinkle them all around.” The second guy said, “Bob, he loved to fly! I’m going to take his ashes up in an airplane, and sprinkle them all across the earth.” The third guy said, “ Jeff, he loved my a--! I think I’m going to dump his ashes into a pot of chili so he can rip it apart one last time…” Joke #3 What is the definition of safe sex in San Francisco? *A padded headboard.* Joke #4 This guy’s in love with his proctologist and constantly makes up excuses for an anal probe. On Valentine’s Day, the guy arrives complaining about an obstruction. The frustrated doctor, knowing he’s not going to find anything, sticks his hand up the patient’s a-- anyway. “Good God!!!” the doctor exclaims. “No wonder you’re in pain -- there are two dozen roses shoved up your
a--!” The patient turns around excitedly and says, “Read the card! Read the card!” Joke #5 What is the definition of “making love”? *Something an eighteen-year-old does while you’re f--king him* Joke #6 Three Labrador retrievers strike up a conversation at the vet. The black lab says “So why are you here?” The yellow lab says, “I’m a p-sser. I p-ss on everything---the sofa, the drapes, the cat, the kids. The final straw was last night when I p-ssed in the middle of my owner’s bed.” The black lab says, “So what do you think the vet will do?” “Gonna give me Prozac,” said the yellow lab. “All the vets are prescribing it. Supposed to work for everything.” The black lab then turns to the brown lab and says, “Why are you here?” “I’m a digger,” said the brown lab. “I dig under fences, dig up flowers, I dig just for the hell of it. The last straw was when I dug a great big hole in my master’s couch.” The black lab says “So what do you think they’ll do?” “Looks like it’ll be Prozac for me too,” said the dejected lab. The brown lab then turns to the black lab and says, “What are you in for?” The black lab says “I’m a humper. I’ll hump anything. The cat, the pillows, the tables, whatever. The last straw was when my owner got out of the shower and bent over to dry himself. I couldn’t help myself, I hopped on his a-- and pumped away.” The brown and yellow labs exchange sad glances and say, “So Prozac for you, too, huh?” “No,” the black lab says, “I’m here to get my nails clipped.”
