This is the seventh year we've put together the annual Spa Edition, and one of my favorite things about producing this edition is the relationships with the local spa owners. Every year I look forward to seeing them and spending some quality time with them and their staff. A lot of people think of spas as places we visit while on vacation, but trust me, if you take care of your body on a regular basis, it will take care of you and make you look and feel younger for many years! I am writing about the spas in the order in which I went to them.

I recently had a much needed massage and treatment at Chi Spa in Wilton Manors. They decided to give me the Mini Chi Revitalization Package ($199), which was two hours of bliss. The "mini" version of one of Chi Spa’s most luxurious treatments consisted of of a relaxing massage, followed by an exfoliating salt scrub and completed with a deliciously hydrating body butter treatment.

I was greeted by my therapist Teena Wiggins, who had a cold cup of refreshing water on hand. She was extremely personable during my massage, which made it easier to relax. After Teena hit all of the important muscle groups on my body, it was time for the salt scrub (my favorite part). The exfoliating salt scrub was exactly what my body needed after a few weeks in the summer sun and pool chlorine. After I rinsed off the salt scrub in a steamy bath, my body was covered in body butter to sooth my skin. My skin was literally like butter! Before my treatment was finished, Teena draped hot towels on my feet and torso and
sprayed my face with an aromatic citrus spray. Needless to say I didn’t want to get off the table after that.

Going to the Grand Resort and Spa is always fun, as not only do I get to see their friendly staff, but I get to see my wife Paula. I think by now her real husband realizes that our marriage is no threat to theirs…LOL!! This year JD decided to personally be the therapist and administer the “Nourishing Sea Mud Therapy (80 mins - $160).” This Massage/Scrub combo starts with a cleanse, and then an exfoliation. Following the exfoliation you are massaged with warm mud. The mud used in this treatment is
great for drawing out impurities and detoxifying the skin. It was amazing how relaxed and refreshed I felt after the treatment. The Grand Resort and Spa has recently initiated a membership program, which is very exciting. There are 2 membership programs to choose from. Membership Package #1 is $85 a month and includes (choose 1) a 50 min Swedish massage, a 50 min classic Dermalogica facial, a Ultra Calming Facial or a 50 min scrub. Membership Package #2 is $125 a month and includes (choose 1)80 min Swedish massage, 80 min Age Smart facial, deep cleansing facial, Bio Active peel, or an 80 min signature body treatment. Both packages also include: 10% off the purchase of spa services, 10% off spa retail purchases, 10% off future bookings at the resort, 10% off purchase of beer and wine from resort while receiving spa services, access to and the use of the resorts common grounds, Jacuzzi, pool, and resort services, and during member’s first month of membership they may obtain access to the resort for one guest at a time while member is present. Guest access to resort includes all the facilities members are allowed to use. The Grand Resort doesn't sell day passes but spa guests can enjoy the facilities along with their treatments. Who wouldn't want to take a dip in the resort pool or hot tub to show off their glowing skin? JD also wanted to remind the community that the Spa offers great mid-week specials on Tues, Wed and Thurs, which change every week so call them to find out.

Frank Velaz, the owner of Urban Retreat Spa and I have known each other for many years (Did you ask how many? Well I am not saying to protect the guilty…LOL). Frank is advanced certified in collagen induction therapy by Dermapen World International. He opened Urban Retreat and Spa in 2006 and the business has steadily grown. His staff of therapists have at least 10 years’ experience in the industry. The service Frank decided to give me was the "Relax & Renew" (75mins $145), which gets out tension and stress from the body and face, as well as providing needed hydration. It’s an upper Body Massage (he asked me to pick the pressure) using Pure

Fiji Organic Body Lotion. For me Frank chose the Starfruit Scent as it is the mildest, as he knows I don't like smells that are too strong. Then he proceeded with a Skin Sense Hydrate Facial. It's a seven step instant hydrate and protect treatment. It includes wash/scrub, Hydrate Aloe/Jojoba toner, bio-molecular hydrate mask, a skin plumping Hyaluronic Infusion, a Vitamin C & E Collagen Stimulating Serum, a Lip Complex and ends with a silky SPF to protect skin from environmental damage. Frank told me that the Relax and Renew is a very popular treatment, which lots of clients like to use to start a "power day" looking and feeling good. This is a great treatment when you want to re-center, relax and balance. Frank loves to bring his clients to the full length mirror in the lobby after the treatment so they can see how visibly different they look! It's usually a "WOW!!" moment, kinda of like a 'big reveal'! Urban Retreat offers a Free Skin Analysis to properly design a custom plan of professional treatments and home skin regimens, with

954-396-6245 • LavishManors.com I have been to Lavish Manors many times, so this year I sent Oscar to experience the joys of this spa. When he arrived he was greeted by owner, Tommy Le, who he said was very welcoming. He was then introduced to John who performed his Hot Stone Paraffin Spa Pedicure ($55). As soon as he sat in the incredibly comfortable massage chair John offered him wine or water to drink. His feet were then soaked in a Jacuzzi tub, and shortly after his my nails were trimmed, shaped, cuticles groomed, including an intensive callus treatment, and a salt scrub. He then said his legs were pampered with a warm herbal wrap to soften and plump the skin, next his legs were exfoliated with a sloughing scrub, and softening sea butter. After this he basked in luxury as they performed a long lasting relaxing massage using warm stones and hemp oil distinctively scented with patchouli. The pedicure ended with a refreshing and smoothing paraffin treatment and a wrapping with aromatic hot towels and then his nails were buffed. Afterwards Oscar received the Shellac Gel Manicure ($30). This relaxing manicure

includes nail trimming, shaping, cuticles detailing, lotion massage and buffing followed by Shellac, which is Chip free for up to 2 weeks. There is no damage to natural nails, resilient mirror finish, no drying time. Oscar said he left Lavish Manors feeling wonderful and he couldn’t stop looking at ow nice his toes and fingers looked.

Babylon Men’s Day Spa is the newest Spa edition to Wilton Drive taking over the old space of 78 Degrees Spa. Babylon Spa originates from Asia. Their masseuses are trained in Chinese and Thai massage techniques as well as Japanese essential oil massages. They pay special attention to pressure points using essential oils to massage these special areas. They offer heat treatments and Chines traditional cupping techniques so their clients can
enjoy full relaxation in a peaceful setting. The service they were giving is called “The Perfect Massage” (90 mins - $80). After I lied down on the table, they put a towel over me for a 10 minute Massage of full-body muscle relaxation. Next they used oils for a full body massage. My therapist said that the neck, shoulders, and small back generally the parts that need the most work so they focus on these places, so their guests can be completely relaxed. After the oil massage technique, they did Chinese cupping, which cures the fatigue of the body (Did anyone see the Real Housewives of Orange County last season?). In the end, they use the hot stone to relax the muscles and let the massage achieve the perfect effect. After the massage he encased my body with warm towels, which made me feel like I was in a cocoon and was super relaxing. While in the cocoon he massaged my feet, hands and head.

Street, Fort Lauderdale 954-565-2307 • CabanasGuestHouse.com Spa Cabanas at The Cabanas Guesthouse is th celebrating its 9 year in business. Norman Lachance began with only himself running and operating the business. Norman contributes the success of the Spa Cabanas to the loyalty of local clients as well as the return of the frequent traveler. It’s due to the continued support of these clients that Spa Cabanas has grown from a one owner/therapist ran business to the successfully ran Spa that it is today with 18 | Hotspots.LGBT
seven employees. The Cabanas Spa has been part of this Spa issue from year one and its always a pleasure to go there and see Norman and his General Manager Clint. They really make you feel special from the moment you walk through their doors. This year they set up a ½ day of services for me. The first service was with Dene, who is a massage therapist and massage. He administered a sixty minute Swedish relaxation massage ($95) with some trigger point examples. Almost immediately Dene noticed that I have a lot of tension in my shoulders and neck and asked if I sat at a computer all day. When I told him that I did, he spent more time in that area. In addition he used a lot of trigger points to relax my body and I must admit I felt so much more relaxed and loose after the massage. Actually noticed the difference at work for days.
Afterwards it was on to Jimmy, who is a Paramedical aesthetician, and who has worked on me for many years. Once a year we get to catch up. This year was especially nice as he got married and I got to hear all about his wedding and his wonderful husband. Jimmy administered the Bio-Lift Facial ($139), which is a unique facial that was introduced to the Spa Cabanas just one month before I received the procedure. This facial includes the use of their new Palm Sonic Nrg Device which reduces visibility of fine lines and includes a heat and cooling option to open and close pores, tripling product absorption and pushing products into the skin. Now anyone who knows me knows that although I won’t do surgery or needles I will try anything natural to remove lines on my face, so I was totally game for this facial, and was excited about the results I saw afterwards. Jimmy also administered the Baby Foot ($40), which is an unparalleled, total foot care package. Their scientifically formulated product contains 17 types of natural extracts which exfoliate and moisturize at the same time. In addition, the Fruit acids such as Glycolic Acid and Critic Acid allow the dead skin cells to peel, but the Alcohol makes the dead cells soft, and the Salicylic Acid, Lactic Acid and Isopropyl stimulate a flaking effect as well. The fruit acid penetrates into the layers of dead skin cells and breaks down the desmosomes which hold the layers together. By this process, skin is undamaged but peels easily away from the fresh layer beneath. After peeling, your feet are reborn just like a baby’s foot,
giving you healthy, beautiful feet. Baby Foot not only peels the dead skin cells from your feet, it also maintains the grain of the skin and adds moisture to the skin. The boots with all the extracts are put on your feet prior to getting Facial and stays there until the facial is done and then is taken off and your feet are wiped with a hot towel. This truly makes a big difference and your feet after peeling feels soft and supple, just like a baby’s bottom. The Spa Cabanas offers a variety of Massages and Bodywork, which include Swedish, deep tissue and sports work as well as aromatherapy, therapeutic and hot stone massage. Spa Cabanas is also able to provide Manicures and Pedicures and all areas of your Manscaping needs with body hair trimming, waxing, shaving and most recently, they have introduced Sugaring. Sugaring is the natural alternative to waxing. Spa Cabanas are constantly updating their monthly specials. Check out the month of October where they are featuring: 10 sessions of a 60 minute massages for only $499 (Reg price $950.00); Microdermabrasion plus massage only $149 (Reg Price $224); 3 Medical Grade Chemical Peels for only $189 (Reg Price $267).

The best chatter on Facebook this week “I see each and every one of you. The things that make you different? Those are your superpowers. Every day when you walk out the door, put on your imaginary cape [and] go out there and conquer the world! Because the world would not be as beautiful without us in it.” Comedian LENA WAITHE in the Emmy acceptance speech for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for Master of None, the comedy-drama web television series on Netflix. Waithe, the first black female to win in that category, thanked her girlfriend and her “LGBQTIA family.”
“Obviously, I disagree with the dismantling of many of the important measures that President Obama put in place to create an even playing field and advocate for civil rights for Americans. But elections have consequences. I don’t think we should be surprised about the steps the [Trump] administration is taking. That’s why President Obama campaigned so hard for Secretary Clinton. And he expressed quite clearly during the campaign what was at stake here.” VALERIE JARRETT, former senior advisor to President Barack Obama, in an interview with LGBT journalist Karen Ocamb of the Los Angeles Blade.
“They want marriage because they want to destroy it. There will be no Mother’s Day, there will be no Father’s Day, there will be no Easter, there will be no Christmas.” Homophobic Australian tennis legend MARGARET COURT, opposing marriage equality in Australia.
“You don’t need to be superhuman and you don’t need to be perfect. Simply live the best you can, and God will take care of the rest.” Fort Lauderdale’s own international drag icon SHAWN PALACIOUS (aka Kitty Meow) on Facebook.

Maybe it’s just me – and it probably is, according to my fellow gay male friends – but I prefer a greasy-poled female strip club to a beefcake revue any day. Here are eight reasons why.
1
Boobies I’m strangely fascinated by females’ breasts’ buoyancy. My buddies’ girlfriends usually let me take theirs for a test drive – much to my buddies’ dismay (especially Kevin) – but I have to limit those occasions, lest I be branded the homo who’s always touching somebody’s tits at the party. The ladies at the club, however – well, they let me satisfy this odd craving for an affordable five dollars. Fair price.
58 | Hotspots.LGBT
Rogue dicks don t come flying at my face Let me get this straight first: I’m not a super-fan of strip clubs. It’s not like I’m there every chance I get. In fact, I’ve only been to a handful in my day, but in hindsight I’ve had more fun at a traditional gentlemen’s club than a gay joint. Sure, the naughty atmosphere is exciting, but I don’t get off on stuffing exotic dancers’ tube socks full of my hard-earned singles, so I generally drink and socialize without much regard for what’s happening on stage, no matter whose junk is out. My lack of undivided attention doesn’t always go over well with the “entertainment,” like the “firefighter” who smacked me on the head with his “hose” during his “performance” because my back was turned to him. Guess the “six foot rule” didn’t apply there. My friend Brooke relates another tale of cockiness gone awry. “I knew someone who was at a male strip club and something flew off (the stripper’s) dick into her eye. She had to go to the hospital; turns out it was pubic lice,” she recalls. “I’m not gay, but I’ll take a pair of titties over crabs helicoptering off a dick any day.”
2
I enjoy giving my unsolicited financial advice to single mothers
4
Female dancers don t pressure me into buying drinks or lap dances If the meth heads at the male strip club aren’t hustling behind-thecurtain action, they’re trying to shake you down for a drink or prescription meds – in my experience, at least. But as soon as you tell the strippers at the vagina store that you’re gay, they cozy up for a cocktail and conversation with zero expectations, a.k.a. the perfect date. 60 | Hotspots.LGBT
3
When I’m not delivering sage advice and anecdotes via this celebrated column, I’m writing about money matters as a fairly successful personal finance expert. Day in and day out I practice savvy spending and saving tactics, which I teach in earnest to those in need (or really anybody who’ll listen), and the strip club is like Sunday service for my financial sermon.
Gay-for-pay dancers turn me off It’s not like I want to go home with a male stripper, but if I wanted to go home with a male stripper I’d like to know that for $100 an hour he enjoys sucking my beautiful cock. Anything else is just a waste of my time and money.
5
6
A bar full of horny straight guys is a challenge I willingly accept I perfected the art of bedding “straight” dudes during my time in a fraternity, which makes a room full of drunken bros with boners and broken egos motherfucking amateur hour.
7
I like to root for the underdogs All eyes are on the skinny bitches grinding the stage, but I prefer the big girls with ass and confidence to spare. I once watched this portly chick with gladiator sandals tied around her calves like twine on a holiday ham slink around the pole with the ease of a giant elf sliding down a chimney on Christmas Eve. She got extra drizzle. Nudie man bars are increasingly hard to find Even if I wanted to go to male strip clubs more often, I couldn’t. Full-nudity male clubs are increasingly harder to find – thanks to America’s nouveau Puritans – with most states outlawing them altogether. I prefer a little mystery anyway. What’s underneath the banana hammock? My imagination usually serve me better than reality.

galleries to showcase Latin American artists with a winning trifecta of three exhibitions: Re lections of the Americas: New Acquisitions from the Collection of Univision; Rafael Soriano: The Artist as Mystic; and Continental Abstractions: Highlights from the Art Museum of the Americas.” “For over 60 years, Univision has been uniting the 22 nationalities that comprise the U.S. Hispanic community through their one common language, Spanish,” said Jessica Rodriguez, EVP and CMO of Univision Communications Inc. “And just as language is a re lection of its culture, nothing is a more accurate re lection of a people's true character and personality than its art." "This wide-ranging collection, housed and exhibited throughout the hallways of our lagship Univision Television Network broadcast facility in Miami, has served as a constant inspiration and re lection of the rich tapestry of cultures and traditions that make up this country's diverse Hispanic community," adds Jessica Rodriguez. "So it is especially appropriate that as a longtime contributor to the culture of greater Miami, that Univision donates this collection of 57 celebrated works to another great hometown institution, the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU, so that they may inspire others for years to come.”

Broaden Your Dimensions:
Creating Boulder Shoulders ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

A
crucial muscle group that you should never neglect or train routinely, are the deltoids, or what some call the shoulder muscles. Well -developed deltoids resemble canon-balls, and they add broadness and dimension to your upper physique. Because of their size and difficult location, you need a variety of specialized exercises in order to develop them. Also, the stronger your deltoids are, the more protected and the less stress you will place upon those deeper rotator cuff muscles. Here are five weight training exercises for deltoids. Try a combination of 3 or 4 of these moves and do them in 3- 4 sets of eight to twelve repetitions with every shoulder

workout. Train shoulders on their own separate day or you can combine them with just about any other muscle group!
• Seated dumbbell presses are great for front and mid deltoids as well as for traps and triceps. Sit on a bench with your back straight. Grasp two dumbbells with an overhand grip and lift them to your shoulders, palms facing forward. Inhale and press your arms to an extended overhead position. Exhale as you lower them back to your shoulders. • Side raises are great for the mid deltoids and they help you to achieve a broader look to the upper body. Stand with your feet slightly spread. Keep your back straight, your arms hanging at your sides. Holding a dumbbell in each hand, raise the dumbbells to shoulder height, keeping your elbows slightly bent. Return to your sides. You can also do this exercise seated on a bench with your back straight and simply raise the dumbbells to your sides as if you were standing. Doing these exercises in a seated position helps you to isolate the side deltoids better. • Front raises are superlative for the front and rear deltoids. Stand with your feet slightly apart. Hold the dumbbells with your palms down (overhand grip). Resting the dumbbells on your thighs or slightly to the
side, raise the dumbbells forward to shoulder height alternating each side. • Bent over lateral raises are great for the overall shoulder, but especially for the rear deltoids and upper back. Stand with your feet spread apart and your knees slightly bent. Bend forward at the waist and keep your back straight. Hold the dumbbells with your elbows slightly bent. Inhale and raise the dumbbells to your sides. Exhale as you complete the movement. • The upright row is another exercise for the mid and rear deltoids. Holding a weighted bar in front of you with an overhand grip, pull it to your chin while keeping your elbows above the bar. Keep the bar close to your body. BOB MARSHALL
F
BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI
or a long time now we’ve been hearing about people terrified that they might share a public restroom with a transgender person out of fear that trans people will pee on them (that’s the fear, right? I’m pretty sure I read that on World Net Daily). Now we’ve found someone terrified to share a stage with a transgender person. Bob Marshall, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates (R-13th District), is running for reelection. His challenger, Democrat Danica Roem, is hoping to unseat Marshall, thus becoming Virginia’s first openly transgender elected official. Marshall, however, is basically pretending that Roem doesn’t exist. He won’t debate her at a candidate forum, he said, because he doesn’t want to get called names. You see, nasty LGBTQ advocates have
88 | Hotspots.LGBT
taken to calling him “Bigot Bob.” According to the Washington Post, Marshall got this nickname “because of his sponsorship of a ‘bathroom bill’ that would have regulated transgender people’s use of restrooms in government buildings. That measure was unsuccessful. Marshall also sponsored Virginia’s constitutional amendment barring samesex marriage — which stood until the U.S. Supreme Court declared such prohibitions unconstitutional.” Well hell, if he has feet like a duck, quacks like a duck, and denies LGBTQ people their humanity, then he’s a ducking bigot. But Marshall takes offense to the label. He tells the Prince Williams Times that it “is simply not correct” and chastises Roem for “hurling insults.” “In the same interview,” the Times reports, “Marshall doubled down on calling
...if he has feet like a duck, quacks like a duck, and denies LGBTQ people their humanity, then he’s a ducking bigot.
Roem … “he.” “Why do you call Danica a female?” Marshall asked the Times reporter. “Did Danica’s DNA change?” Sick burn, bro. Like, seriously, your contempt for transgender people is sickening. Then Marshall has the nerve to cry to the Washington Post about a “lack of civility.” “In the last few elections, there’s been a distinct lack of civility,” Marshall said. “Prior to that, it wasn’t so bad. You weren’t automatically identified as a bigot, or a hatemonger or anything like this. That has changed.” Yes, bigots being called out for their bigoted bullshit is a change. A refreshing one if you’re a member of an oppressed minority in the United States. Maybe we have learned something from the election of Donald Trump, a white supremacist, misogynist, and LGBTQ foe. But if you’re a straight white guy in America and being called “a bigot, or a
hatemonger” feels oppressive to you, well, it’s literally the LEAST everyone else could do. As an added bonus, the candidate forum Marshall is refusing to attend is hosted by the NAACP. I suspect that in addition to not wanting to have to treat a trans person like a human being in public, Marshall probably also has a problem with the NAACP, specifically that they’re allowed to use the term “colored people” but he, a 73-year-old white man, isn’t. Again, that’s just a guess. I suppose we’ll never know since he won’t attend the forum. According to the the Prince William Times, Roem and other Democrats are still planning on meeting with voters regardless. “I think it’s a damn shame that he refused to debate, but we’re going to do it anyway,” Roem said. Cosmopolitan magazine calls the fact that Roem is running against Marshall “cosmic poetry,” and I have to agree. It would be a beautiful thing to see her unseat Bigot Bob. “The message that I can succeed because of my gender, not despite it, because of who I am without being afraid of who I am is a human message,” Roem told Cosmo.

arasota, located an hour south of Tampa on Interstate 75, is a place where people go to leave their troubles behind. With a booming art scene, tons of great restaurants, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the sunshine state, it is a great place for a get away. There are so many great sights to see, ranging from the famed Ringling Museum to the very
walkable downtown area, featuring many specialty boutiques and sidewalk cafĂŠs. Give Sarasota a chance and you'll fall in love.
Where to Stay Unlike Key West, Miami, or Fort Lauderdale, Sarasota doesn't feature any gay only hotels, but with the high concentration of art and theatre in the small city, there are plenty of gay friendly accommodations. Here are a few of our suggestions.
Hotel Ranola (118 Indian Place) Hotel Ranola is a nine-room boutique hotel located right in the middle of the downtown area. Privately owned, this hotel exudes lots of charm. Each of the nine rooms offer full kitchens with stove and refrigerator as well as Keurig coffee machines. The Royale Suites are over 600 square feet and offer separate living and sleeping spaces, as well as a champagne bar. The hotel is adults-only, so if you have kids, you need to consider a different option, but if not, you will definitely love this hotel. For rates and more information, visit them online at HotelRanola.com

This is located in the Rosemary District in the
heart of Sarasota's Art's District and within walking distance of Sarasota Bay. Stop by the H20 Bistro, one of the city's top restaurants, for something to eat and drink in cheerful, bright surroundings. The rooms are bright as well, influenced by the coastal color schemes so popular in Florida. All rooms offer oversized beds and hardwood floors. Make it a point to relax in the spa's unique wading pools. Visit HotelIndigoSaras ota.com for booking info and rates.

It was the only mall built in the United States in 2014 and features over 100 retailers, anchored by Dillard's, Macy's, and the Suncoast's only Saks Fifth Avenue. it's easy to see why once you step foot on the warm sand and see thousands of sunbathers enjoying the rays and the water. The sand is so white here, that even on the hottest sunny days it doesn't get hot. On your way from downtown, make sure you stop at the Unconditional Surrender statue near the waterfront. A recreation of the iconic "V-J Day in Times Square" photograph in which a sailor plants a passionate smooch on a nurse, it is one of Sarasota's most iconic landmarks. The Marie Selby Botanical

There are even art collections relating to the circus life in their Circus Museum (it is the Ringling Museum, after all!). Sarasota has a very sizable Amish community, which began generations ago when Amish communities from Ohio and Pennsylvania chose Sarasota as a winter vacation spot. You definitely can't miss a home-cooked meal at Yoder's Restaurant (3434 Bahia Vista St.), which has served the Sarasota community, Amish and "English," for 40 years. Want to take in a show afterwards? The Van Wezel

NEED WOOD
By Woody Miller
HE’S TOO
SHY SHY
H
ey Woody! I’ve got a problem I’m too embarrassed to ask anyone about. Whenever I go out, especially to the bars, I can’t seem to pee if there’s anyone next to me, even if my bladder is about to explode. Sometimes I can do it if I go into a stall and shut the door but when you’re waiting in line and the stall is occupied, it’s not always possible. The worst is waiting in line, wondering if I’ll be able to pee when I get to the urinal. If the place has one of those troughs where everyone pees into a vat, forget it, I won’t even try. My problem has gotten so bad I refuse to go out to the bars (or really any place where there’s going to be lots of people and long lines in the bathroom). I want to go out and party and get laid but I’m too scared of the humiliation I put myself through. Woody, what can I do? How do I get over this? —
Pee Shy
y
Dear Pee: I know that was a tough letter to write. About as tough to read, if you suffer from being “pee-shy” like I do. You and I are not alone. About 7% of the public, or 17 million people suffer from being pee shy, which is a diagnosable condition technically known as “Avoidant Paruresis.” It can severely impair people’s lives (some sufferers have literally landed in the ER where they had to be catheterized to
“void” their urine). Shrinks classify it as a type of social anxiety disorder. When fear sets in you get an adrenaline rush and your body automatically shuts down the internal sphincter muscle. It’s a protection mechanism. When you’re running for your life, the last thing you want to do is stop and urinate. With a shy bladder the fear, anxiety and adrenal response spiral until no matter how hard you try, you just can’t go. Some shrinks have tried “disinhibiting” medicine like tranquilizers or anti-depressants but to no real success. You can always go with the gold standard in lowering inhibitions--alcohol. Basically, you drink till you’re so whacked you don’t care if the Backstreet Boys are in the bathroom with you, you’re gonna p-ss like a racehorse. But as you know, I don’t ever offer alcohol as a problem solver. Seriously, desensitization techniques are the best way to move the waters within. It works like this: You gradually introduce the feared stimuli until they lose their power to paralyze your body. Anyway, you do this first with visualization, then in real life. This is how I overcame it. With relaxation, distraction and visualization techniques I short-circuited the panic, allowing me a great degree of bathroom freedom. Though I have to be honest and say that my shy bladder hasn’t gone away completely. I never sought professional help, mostly because I was too ashamed. Don’t let shame stop you like it did me. Start by going to www. paruresis.com. They register more than 42,000 visitors a month in their discussion site. There are all kinds of helpful links.
