The 45th Anniversary

of the Female Impersonator Miss Florida Pageant

12 | Hotspots.LGBT

T

he 45th anniversary of the Female Impersonator Miss Florida Pageant will be taking place on Monday, October 16 at the beautiful Bahia Mar on Fort Lauderdale beach. The pageant is nicknamed “The Social Event of the Season attracting some of the top named female impersonators, and Movie, TV and Fashion stars from across the USofA and beyond. In the past Miss Florida had celebrity judges including KC and Sunshine Band, Boy George, and Sylvester. This year we have Trinity Taylor form Ru Paul's Drag Race Season 9. Although many pageant systems have started since, they have followed the lead of Miss Florida F.I. Although Miss Florida F.I. is a state title, the system has always been recognized as a national pageant. Former winners have gone onto great careers in TV, movies, and coveted lead roles in shows and cabarets including Las Vegas and P-Town, and have traveled not only across the state of Florida but around the world. The current owners plan to uphold the vision of original owners Keith Landon and Rene Rodriguez include, they are: Alyson Thomas, a seasoned professional in the art form of female impersonation herself for 40 years, brings professionalism, style,

stability, and experience to the pageant. She is also known throughout the country as a leading promoter and supporter to many who have gone on to become national title holders and a coach to newcomers. Well respected by everyone in the art form, a hands on owner with an eye for detail, coupled with personality, hospitality and vision. Scott Holland, whose knowledge and experience in the Florida market includes: media and editorial experience, judge to many pageantry systems, a pageant coordinator, public relations, professionalism, and a love for entertainment that cannot be touched. Victor Zepka and Gary Santis who have owned the pageant for the last 25 years have stayed on as owners to keep the history of the system alive. They bring 25 years of hands on working knowledge of the system, and the experience that's makes Miss Florida F.I. rich in history, and memories. Victor brings long standing established relationships with sponsors, vendors and local business and community leaders to the pageant. Gary continues to create amazing sets, outrageous productions, state of the art sound and lighting, encompassing a show and a night of entertainment not to be missed. When asked about any new things happening in the Miss Florida System, Alyson Thomas, President, said “We have many exciting plans in the years to come that I think the community is going to love. So far, since resurrecting the Miss Florida system 4 years ago, we have also brought back the Miss Florida F.I, at Large pageant 2 years ago that we produce at the Parliament House, and this year we are excited to be producing for the very first time, the Mr Florida Male Entertainer pageant that will be held the day before Miss Florida, on Sunday October 15 also at the Bahia Mar Hotel.”

I asked Miss Florida F.I. 2016, the beautiful Shantell D'Marco, why it was so important for her to become Miss Florida F.I and she said: “Entering Miss Florida FI was a life goal of mine. I grew up in Miami and Miss Florida was the event of the year. Gowns, fashion, trendsetters, just to name a few. One day I knew I would be a Miss Florida. But Life happened, and I moved away from Florida. IYears later I moved back to Florida but this time to Central Florida, Orlando. Everything just blossomed for me from there, career, marriage, and most important growth. Miss Florida F.I. came back to mind and I knew I only wanted to do it one time. I checked all my boxes and I knew I was ready. It was important for me to return and finally do Miss Florida, not only because it was a life goal, but ultimately just to show the world what I was now made of and that the glow outside now finally matched inside.”

The Mr. and Miss Florida F.I. pageant will be held Sunday and Monday, October 15 & 16 at the beautiful Bahia Mar on Fort Lauderdale beach starting at 8pm. To reserve your hotel room go to call the Bahia Mar at 954-764-2233 and ask for Cherlie and tell her you want the Miss Florida discount.

From a hilariously new gay doll Instagram to the blitz of award-worthy films slated for release, there's plenty to love about the pumpkin-spiciest season of all. Here's what to pay attention to this fall.

1

The L.A. Basics Since the The L.A. Basics Instagram account arrived on Aug. 25 with its first tongue-in-cheek post parodying SoCal scene queens while backhandedly reading them for filth (it applies to homos everywhere though; that's the real beauty of it), it's garnered nearly 40,000 followers at press time and climbing. While you'll get a kick out of the creator's irreverent observations regarding our community's holy commitment to Sunday Fundays and passion for “frose” – among dozens of other gay clichés – there's one over-arching question I ask myself every time I peep a new post: Why does this remind me of Colton Haynes? Judge for yourself @the_la_basics on IG.

National Suicide Prevention Month September is National Suicide Prevention Month, the annual campaign for which will be wrapping up by the time you read this. Mental health issues, depression, and our own dedication to providing support and resources to those in our lives who may need it, however, should not be confined to a month of promoted awareness. If someone in your life is exhibiting signs that may require professional help or medical intervention, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800273-8255 or visit suicidepreventionlifeline.org. If you're personally having trouble coping, dealing with your emotions or any other of life's problems, rest assured that you are not alone, someone is available to listen, and someone "will" help you. You belong "here".

3

The return of "Will & Grace" Season nine of seminal LGBT sitcom "Will & Grace" returns to the NBC Thursday night lineup at 9/8c Sept. 28, and we're eagerly awaiting to see what the codependent pals are up to 11 years after they left us. The series will be retconned to eliminate the eponymous characters' children who were introduced in the 2006 finale, which is really neither here nor there because we're only coming back for Jack and Karen anyway.

4

Hallo-queen If you're a fan of gay Christmas a.k.a. Halloween, you've probably had this year's getup locked down for months. If you still need inspiration for a look that's both bag-of-dicks queer with a touch of topicality – like “Closet-Case Trump Bro” or “Viral Hula-Hooper” – keep an eye out for my annual Gayest Halloween Costumes roundup coming soon to an LGBT publication near you.

Cool-weather weekends with your boo Picnic lunches at local farms. Bonfires in the backyard. Naked cuddles and binge sessions of "Stranger Things" season two (available on Netflix Oct. 27). These are just some of the fall activities I'm looking forward to with my boo.

6

National Coming Out Day Whether you've been out and proud for years – or you've just recently worked up the courage to reveal your truth – we all stand together in solidarity and support on National Coming Out Day, Oct. 11. No pressure though. Only you know when the time is right, and there's nothing wrong with concealing your sexual orientation if that's what's best for you. Your journey is yours and yours alone. No judgment.

Academy Award-worthy cinema Film studios hoping for Oscar gold save their most promising films for end-of-year release, and this year's buzzed-about contenders include several LGBT-sensible flicks, including "Battle of the Sexes", about out tennis pro Billie Jean King's wild-ride tennis match against loud-mouthed hustler Bobby Riggs; "Call Me By Your Name" (Nov. 24), starring Armie Hammer as a 24-year-old Jewish-American scholar who falls for a 17year-old boy in 1980s Italy (a movie that skeeze ball James Woods will "not" be seeing, by the way); and "God's Own Country", a British film that has drawn comparison to "Brokeback Mountain", but hasn't yet received distribution in the United States.

“The Sound of Music” Comes to the Broward Center Interview with South Florida cast member Adam Ross Glickman By Scott Holland

A

brand new production of The Sound Of Music, produced by NETworks Presentations, is making its Fort Lauderdale premiere October 10 – 22, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts as part of a North American tour. Jill-Christine Wiley will play Maria Rainer, with Mike Mclean as Captain Georg Von Trapp, Lauren Kidwell as the mother Abbess, Jake Mills as Max Detweiler, Melissa Mckamie as Elsa Schraeder, Keslie Ward as Liesl and Chad P. Campbell as Rolf Gruber. The Von Trapp children are played by Landon Brimacombe (Friedrich), Arick Brooks (Kurt), Katie Grgecic (Brigitta), Madeleine Guilbot (Gretl), Maya Karp 50 | Hotspots.LGBT

(Louisa) and Amaryllis C. Miller (Marta). Completing the cast is Caleb Adams, Colten Blair, Sarah Brackett, Jeff Brooks, Randy Charleville, Mackenzie Dade, Danielle Guilbot, Stephanie Gray, Danielle Lee James, Allison Macri, Nicholas Newman, Adam Ross Glickman, Isaac Ryckeghem, Annie Sherman, Thanos Skouteris, Christina Tompkins, Ariana Valdes and Melissa Weyn. It was a pleasure to sit down with South Florida Native Adam Ross Glickman for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

At what age did you begin singing/acting? My parents put me in every sport possible, but I was never good at any of them. When I was 11, I auditioned for the choir and got all the

solos; I really liked it. I was then sent to performing arts camp and I fell in love. From then on, it was history.

What was your first Professional/Paid gig? In Oxford Mississippi I did “Love Labors Lost” and played Moth. I sprained my ankle right before the live shows and I had to change my character and give him a limp. I was in excruciating pain, but the show must go on.

Other than this show, what role has been your favorite to play and why? My favorite role to play was Sweeny Todd in Sweeny Todd in High School. I was nominated for the Jimmy Nederlanders Award for this role. I love Sondheim and the darkness and the depth of this character. I hope to play Sweeny Todd again one day. I also loved Barry in “The Boys Next Door.” He is a schizophrenic and I found

it hard to play, but it was so challenging.

and how excited are you to be touring in Florida?

You are a billboard charting songwriter, when did you start writing music, and how did that come about?

I do get back often, because I am super close with my family. I am so excited about performing at the Broward Center as it's the first time my grandmother will see me perform professionally, and it is the place where I saw my first musical; Showboat.

What should the South Florida audiences expect out of this touring company of The Sound Of Music?

You were born and raised in Fort Lauderdale. Do you get back often

It's beautiful, and the whole creative team are Tony

When I first moved to New York, in 2015, I started writing music. I go the job to survive, but I fell in love with writing. I still work on it every day and hope to release a full project in a years' time.

Award winning. The costumes are straight from Austria and Germany. The lighting is amazing and the actors are a joy to work with. I think the show is like the movie but it's more relatable to a modern audience. One of the lines I love that mother Abbott says is “How do you choose to spend your love?” and I think it's a message everyone should think of and take away from the show.

For more information on Adam, either go to his website at: adamrossofficial.com or follow him on Facebook or Instagram/adamrossofficial. The Sound Of Music features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, suggested by The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp. The beloved musical story of Maria and the von Trapp Family will once again thrill audiences with its Tony, Grammy and Academy Award–winning Best Score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss” and the title song. The Sound Of Music enjoyed extraordinary success as a live television production when “The Sound of Music Live!” aired on NBC in December, 2013 and was seen by over 44 million people. 2015 marked the 50th anniversary of the film version, which continues to be the most successful movie musical in history. Ted Chapin, President of the

Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, says: “I waited for a moment when we could rediscover THE SOUND OF MUSIC as it was originally created. Because of the enormous success of the film, few were aware that it started life as a hit Broadway show—and a very big hit at that! The artists behind this production embraced what the authors wrote, looked at it all through modern eyes and, in so doing, found depth and resonance that has been recognized by critics and audiences across the country. It's like visiting an old friend but finding yourself surprised as well. It's also a reminder of why this show is such an evergreen." Tickets for The Sound Of Music are available at the Broward Center AutoNation Box Office, 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33312, BrowardCenter.org or by calling 954.462.0222. Ticket prices start at $35.25.

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO

Hmmm…

SHAME ON MIAMI-DADE COMMISSIONERS FOR CONDONING CONVERSION THEPARY

Despite a mountain of scientific evidence that conversion therapy, the practice of trying to change a gay child’s sexual orientation, is not only ineffective but harmful to the child’s mental health, Miami-Dade county commissioners voted against a ban on this practice in Dade County. The commissioners – all of whom should be voted out of office for such a shameful decision – hid behind the excuse that banning conversion therapy would be seen as the county interfering into parents’ right to make decisions about their children’s health. Aside from overwhelming agreement by the medical community discrediting conversion therapy, there was a landmark case in New Jersey in 2015 in which a jury found a nonprofit organization that claimed it could turn gay men into heterosexuals guilty of the state’s Consumer Fraud Act. Three men and two parents were awarded about $72,000 in damages. “The same lies that motivate gay conversion therapy motivate homophobia – that gay people are broken and need to be fixed,” said David Dinielli, attorney for the plaintiffs in that case. Nine states — New Jersey, California, New

Mexico, Illinois, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Oregon as well as the District of Columbia have banned conversion therapy. Another 25 cities, counties or municipalities have banned conversion therapy on minors on the basis of sexual orientation, 15 of which are in the state of Florida: Key West, Miami Beach, Miami, Wilton Manors, Delray Beach, West Palm Beach, Boynton Beach, Wellington, Riviera Beach, North Bay Village, Bay Harbor Islands, Green Acres, Lake Worth, El Portal and Tampa.

ANTI-ABORTION CONGRESSMAN’S HYPOCRISY BROUGHT TO LIGHT

Talk about hypocrisy! It turns out Rep. Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania, one of the nation’s most vocal anti-abortion congressmen, had an extramarital affair, got his very young girlfriend pregnant –

68 | Hotspots.LGBT

then asked her to get…that’s right, an abortion! Local newspaper the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette exposed Murphy’s hypocrisy after obtaining copies of text messages between the congressman and Shannon Edwards, a local woman half his age. In one text, the distressed woman wrote, “You have zero issue posting your pro-life stance all over the place when you had no issue asking me to abort our unborn child…” In response, Congressman Murphy wrote, “I get what you say about my March for Life messages. I’ve never written them. Staff does them. I read them and winced. I told staff don’t write any more. I will.” Following the expose, Murphy announced he was not seeking re-election. Hmmm.

here's no doubt that watching your diet and keeping physically active are two of the best things you can do to stay healthy. Monitoring what you eat is hard enough, so how are you going to manage cramming and hour of exercise into an already busy day? What if I told you that there's overwhelming evidence that exercising for just 10 minutes a day can make a real difference in your health and fitness level? In the past, doctors, trainers and fitness enthusiasts have offered varying opinions on how best to lose weight, build muscle and increase stamina, etc. Yet they all seem to agree that a combination of sound nutrition, weight

ost Americans don’t spend a lot of time thinking about this country’s court system. If you’re lucky, you don’t have a lot of direct contact with the courts. The most privileged among us don’t even really have to think about it. The judicial system is like a sewer system: if it’s working okay then it’s largely out-of-sight out-ofmind. But when it gets clogged up with garbage everybody is sorry they didn’t take better care of it and check on it sooner. And clogging our courts up with garbage is just what Donald Trump is doing. He’s outsourced the judge-picking to far right groups who have been giving him names of extremists that he is dutifully nominating. They are unfit for the bench, but when you’re the president, they let you do it. One of these nominees is Jeff Mateer who has been nominated for a lifetime seat on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. And he is a nightmare. In a video put together by the People for the American Way, Mateer calls homosexuality “the elephant in the room” and bemoaned “the agenda that this small group is seeking and imposing on the rest of us.” “I’ve read the 14th Amendment thousands of times,” he says in a recording. “I don’t see anything about right to same sex marriage, I don’t see anything saying right to homosexuality, I don’t see anything about right to privacy.” No doubt he thinks it perfectly all right to tell a lesbian couple, “We’re not going to rent to you” or refusing to make a cake for a gay couple’s wedding citing religious freedom. He also believes in so-called “reparative therapy,” which has been thoroughly debunked by medical experts but is still embraced by those who believe that you can just “pray the gay away.”

76 | Hotspots.LGBT

JEFF MATEER The worst is what he has to say about transgender kids and their audacity to fight for the right to use the restroom at school. Mara Keisling, the executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, isn’t having it. “How dare he?” Keisling asks. “How dare anyone talk about children this way? Republicans have been rubber stamping Trump’s nominees. The Democrats are opposing them, but they are in the minority. In a letter signed by 278 parents of transgender children from 36 states, Mateer is encouraged to apologize and invited to withdraw his nomination. Of course, that’s like imploring the fox to be nice to the chickens now that he has the key to the coop. The radical right doesn’t exactly have a history of showing mercy to LGBTQ people. Elections have consequences. And when Trump is finally gone his legacy will live on in conservative anti-LGBTQ judges across the country and in the Supreme Court that will shape the legal landscape for generations to come. Some of the battles we thought we won will have to be fought again. The most effective weapon against this? Vote.

HRC blasts the Trump administration after shocking U.N. death penalty vote The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has blasted the Trump administration for what it called a “blatant disregard for human rights.” This follows a vote by Nikki Haley, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, against a U.N. resolution that included a provision condemning the death penalty as a punishment for consensual same-sex relationships. “Ambassador Haley has failed the LGBTQ community by not standing up against the barbaric use of the death penalty to punish individuals

in same-sex relationships,” said Ty Cobb, director of HRC Global, in a statement. “While the U.N. Human Rights Council took this crucially important step, the Trump/Pence administration failed to show leadership on the world stage by not championing this critical measure. This administration’s blatant disregard for human rights and LGBTQ lives around the world is beyond disgraceful.” RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

Meanwhile, the Justice Department last week also issued

a sweeping new statement declaring religious freedom a “fundamental right of paramount importance,” paving the way for discrimination against LGBT Americans. Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ statement was intended to offer guidance on how the government will decide conflicts involving declarations of religious belief. One recent case involved a baker who refused to bake a cake for a gay couple. The Justice Department intervened in that case on the side of the baker.

Come Out With Pride Presents #KeepDancingOrlando

n June 12, 2016, Orlando was changed forever. Throughout the days, weeks and months that followed, the community took action to rebuild and strengthen. People helped one another. They showed the world our ongoing spirit that neither hate nor violence could ever extinguish us and we kept dancing. Last November, Come Out With Pride gathered people together to remember and honor the lives that were taken from us. This year, Come Out With Pride will continue to honor their memory by keeping the music going. There will be dancing in the parade, dancing throughout the festival, and even an entire dance area called the #KeepDancingOrlando Zone. Here is your guide to an unforgettable weekend:

To kick off Orlando Pride weekend, stop by The Veranda from 6:30 to 10:00pm on Thursday, October 12th for The Pride Launch Party. The countdown to pride weekend ramps up with energetic performances in a dazzling social setting

90 | Hotspots.LGBT

that's not to be missed. General admission is free and VIP options are available. The Veranda is located in the beautiful Thornton Park neighborhood at 111 North Summerlin Avenue. On Friday at 8pm, Get ready to party as Hamburger Mary's and Pride Orlando presents "Pride On Church Street". The event is free admission and features various live entertainment throughout the night, including Miss Sammy, DJ JB Burgos, The Minx, Carol Lee and many more!! Hamburger Mary's is located at 110 West Church Street in Downtown Orlando. Before heading over to the Come Out With Pride Festival on Saturday the 14th, grab your boyfriend…or your girlfriend…or your parents…or all of your closest friends…or all of the above and head over to The Abbey for the Big Gay Brunch, presented by Orlando Immunology Center. The Big Gay Brunch features an amazing brunch spread, bottomless mimosas, Tito's Bloody Marys, DJs and live performances. You can purchase your tickets at biggaybrunchorlando.com. The Abbey is located a block away from Lake Eola at 100 South Eola Drive. Eat, Drink and Come Out With Pride!

Between noon and 10 p.m. on Saturday the 14th, join the LGBTQ+ community members and allies as we all come together for an unforgettable day long festival! Be sure to visit more than 100 vendors at the Pride Marketplace and SponsorWalk

between noon and 7 p.m. Gather your friends to watch The Most Colorful Parade at 4p.m. Come Out With Pride is looking forward to having a very moving and uplifting parade, and this is your chance to get excited and show thanks to the individuals who have devoted so much energy to strengthening and supporting our community. In order to ensure that all of this year's attendees have a perfect spot to watch the parade, the route has been expanded all the way down to Orange Avenue. Come Out With Pride is also oering a special grandstands seating option along with the VIP Experience Every great event deserves a great inale, and shortly after 9p.m. Come Out With Pride will continue the tradition of saying goodnight with a dazzling spectacle of ireworks above Lake Eola. With nearly a mile of walkways around the water, there's

room for everyone to get a prime viewing spot. The festival, parade and ireworks spectacle are all free of charge and open to the public with VIP tickets for sale featuring exclusive opportunities throughout the day.

Entertainment, special events and more surprises will commence throughout the day. Come Out With Pride is always a fun event as it is a safe place where everyone can feel welcomed with the most colorful parade and best entertainment. However, Pride is more than that. The Pride legacy is about ighting for our community's rights, especially for those who don't always have a voice. Pride is also about taking action - Throughout this year's festival, you'll will see many

organizations and businesses that are committed to making our society better. You'll ind some engaged in helping people live healthier lives, others who are charged with changing our political landscape, and so much more as you will have an opportunity to meet and join forces with

these groups. Come Out With Pride is dedicated to helping you ind and connect with them. We've seen countless examples in recent times of how ignorance and inaction can have devastating consequences. Come out this

October 14th with plans to celebrate, but also with the mission to help the entire Come Out With Pride team make a real difference. Every year, Come Out With Pride truly makes a difference by allocating funds towards grants and scholarships for the Central Florida community. Their board evaluates the needs of local LGBTQ+ organizations, LGBTQ+ students and that of allied organizations doing an outstanding job at educating and providing services to our community towards acceptance and equal rights. Come Out With Pride does not provide grants to political or activist groups. Their focus is on those organizations that might be struggling to meet their goals and

92 | Hotspots.LGBT

those with a mission aimed at educating and assisting members of our community. Last year, Come Out With Pride provided $30,000 in scholarships, cash grants and promotional/logistical assistance to various organizations within the community. In closing, I would like to thank the entire Come Out With Pride team: Brian Riha, Patrick Burke, Jose Luis Dieppa, Cedric Linton, Deb Ofsowitz, Jeff Prystajko, Matt Riha, Holly Strout, Kesia Antunes, Bob Azzarito, Karen Brown, Robert Carnes, J.D. Casto, Conor McKeever, Dani Ring, Alex Ruble, Kevin Sayre, Billy Sisco and the amazing group of volunteers that help make this an unforgettable event every year. All of us are making a difference in our community!! Let's #KeepDancingOrlando For more information, please visit comeoutwithpride.com

SOUTH FLORIDA'S TIEMPO LIBRE IGNITES THE BROWARD CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

T

hree-time Grammy Award nominee Tiempo Libre performs in the Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, October 14 at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Since the group's formation in Miami 2001, the band has appeared around the globe and has been seen on The Tonight Show, Live from Lincoln Center and Dancing with the Stars as well as many entertainment programs on Univision and Telemundo. The band's blend of tropical music features an irresistible, exhilarating mix of jazz harmonies, contemporary sonorities and seductive Latin rhythms. Reviewing a 2009 performance in Manhattan, The New York Times reported, “Above all Tiempo Libre wanted to engage the

audience — make it sing and move and react. The band always points, at least, toward a dance music of sophistication and abandon.” The Abdo New River Room offers a club atmosphere where sumptuous sandwiches, salads, snacks and desserts are available for purchase with convenient walk-up service. A full cash bar is also available. Tickets are $37. Ticketmaster is the only of icial ticketing service of the Broward Center, Parker Playhouse and af iliated venues. Buy tickets online at BrowardCenter.org or Ticketmaster.com; by phone at 954.462.0222 or the Broward Center's AutoNation Box Of ice. Know who you are buying from when you purchase tickets.

NEED WOOD

By Woody Miller

THEY LIKE IT

ROUGH

H

ey Woody! I’ve been going out with this guy for about six months and everything’s going great. But lately he’s been badgering me to get a little kinkier with him. I’m not totally against it but I feel awkward. And so does he, actually. He kinda wants me to tie him up and hit him. Not like, you know, breaking his jaw, but enough to hurt him. I’m sorta shocked that he wants that but kinda turned on, too. The thing is, neither one of us knows how to start. Any suggestions as to how two beginners can get over their awkwardness? --- Working out the kinks

y Dear Working: Don’t do it. Don’t go over to the dark side. It’s immoral and you will suffer the consequences of such sick and stomachturning desires. Oh, wait. I have your letter confused with the one about monogamy. Let me be the first to welcome you to BDSM, or Bondage, Discipline, Dominance, Submission, Sadism and Masochism. I know -- too many words and not enough letters representing them. Don’t look for logic in Kinkworld, it’ll just confuse you. First thing is, don’t beat yourself up about feeling nervous or awkward. Beat your boyfriend. It’ll help get you into the swing of things a lot quicker. BDSM houses the full spectrum of actions and intentions. Some people are only interested in physical techniques, from the lightweight to the truly torturous. Some people get off just on the power differentials

of dominance and submission and some on the pleasure of giving or receiving pain. One of the more interesting things about BDSM partners is that many just want to get off on the pain and not be explicitly sexual with each other. Before you get started, explore with your boyfriend what it is that he wants. Is it purely the physical sensation of being hit or is it to feel like he’s being punished for some made-up transgression like going AWOL from a dangerous mission? Does he want a couple of thwacks on the arm or does he want to be pummeled all over his body? Negotiating beforehand may feel a little awkward, but it’ll save you some enormously unpleasant consequences. If you get confused, always look to Aretha Franklin for BDSM advice. She spelled it out years ago: R-E-S-P-E-C-T. If your boyfriend is giving you the “gift” of his submission, respect his boundaries. Agree on a “safeword” beforehand, a mutually understood word that when uttered, means STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING RIGHT NOW. Don’t pick the word “No” because part of the thrill may be pretending you don’t want the abuse. If you want to try some bondage action, proceed with caution. Novices tend to restrain wrists and ankles with handcuffs, silk scarves and clotheslines. Don’t. Wrists and ankles are delicate and it’s easy to accidentally hurt your partner badly if you don’t know what you’re doing. Get some thick, wide, padded restraints that distribute the pressure over a wide area. Don’t tie him up so that he’s suspended, or in a way that parts of his body will go numb, like tying his hands over his head. Finally, get a beginner’s book. The best in the bunch is probably Screw the Roses: Send Me the Thorns, by Philip Miller and Molly Devon.
