The Smart Ride 14 January 19 & 20 (Orientation January 18)

The Smart Ride is a 2 Day Ride, 165-Mile Ride from Miami to Key West, and this year it takes place January 19th and 20th, 2018 (Had to be rescheduled from its normal November dates due to the hurricane). The SMART Ride (Southern Most AIDS/HIV Ride) was born out of a dream to make a real and signi icant difference in the lives of those infected, affected and at risk for HIV/AIDS. In 2002, the idea was a welcome change to this kind of fundraising, but met much skepticism about the reality of meeting these goals of 100%. The ride became a reality one year later in November of 2003 with less than 100 riders and about 100 crew. Miraculously, they raised $169,000 and returned it all to AIDS Service Organizations. Thirteen years later, over $8.5 million has been distributed throughout Florida, making SMART Ride the 2nd largest AIDS bicycle ride in the country and the only one of its size to give back 100%. Their participants come from across the State of Florida. From as far south as Key West, as far North as Jacksonville, and from Tampa to Palm Beach. Nationally, participants come from as far as Hawaii to as close as our neighboring state of Georgia, not to mention internationally. They attract between 400500 participants with each event, but they touch thousands more on the road as they travel between cities and towns, and with each donation that is made. Last year, close to 10,000 people donated to their efforts – that's quite an impact! The Smart Ride sponsors are Independent/Family Owned Businesses, Regional and National Companies. All believe that being involved is a life changing

experience and want an opportunity to give back to the community. Sponsors donate cash, products, and services and also put together riding teams. Thanks to them, they are able to produce a safe event and donate 100% of the pledges raised back to the community. So whether you ride, crew, sponsor or donate, it takes everyone to make a difference in the ight against HIV/AIDS. Their goals: · To raise more money than any other similar event has historically done in the State of Florida · To provide a SAFE ride · To bring awareness to the continued growth of HIV/AIDS worldwide · To help those already living with HIV & AIDS live healthier and more ful illed lives by providing the basics to long term survival · To give those who have lost someone to AIDS an avenue to express, recognize, remember and celebrate these individuals · To include anyone who has ever felt they wanted to challenge themselves and make a difference in the world · To create memories that will ill your heart and soul · In some small but signi icant way, to feel they changed the lives of others for the better Their current bene iciaries are: Broward House, 'Childrens Diagnostic & Treatment Centers (CDTC), Metro Wellness & Community Centers, Pridelines, AIDS Help (AH), Miracle of Love, Inc., and Compass Community Center. HEAR ME OUT: Best of 2017 <<< |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| By Chris Azzopardi

Donald Trump is still tweeting (oh yeah, and somehow still president). Free internet porn could be a bygone luxury thanks to #RIPNetNeutrality. But hey, music in 2017 didn't suck! Read on for the music that saved me, and maybe you, from one of the worst years for queerkind:

10. Tori Amos, “Native Invader”

gray clouds of post-Obama America (hey, somebody has to keep our hopes up). Though he falls back on some familiar

Phoenix-like tropes on this bright, buoyant slice of escapist heaven, hearing one of alt music's most introspective minds resist the solemn zeitgeist with work so full of life is refreshingly infectious.

To approach dire world affairs with a sound mind, Tori Amos called on her trusty muses to guide her inest release in some time. Themes of love, pain and healing, both in the midst of global and personal tragedy, comprise a set that draws upon Amos' earliest years as her trademark Bö sendorfer is our guiding light on the mesmerizing and exquisitely rendered “Reindeer King.” Elsewhere, Amos rails the patriarchy on “Bang,” while the album's darkest 8. Taylor Swift, ”Reputation” foray, the wayward “Climb,” inds her calling “My name is whatever you decide,” Taylor upon spiritual forces for some necessary divine Swift lirts on the thunderous “Don't Blame political-hell intervention. fascist uprising. Breaking his own mold time and time again, one of music's sincerest songwriters takes _No Shape_ into a new dimension where escapist fantasy and Sade vibe together. The piano parables of Hadreas' formative years are history, replaced by fresh textural turns that are as boldly queer as his tender poetry.

3. The National, “Sleep Well Beast” The quiet beauty of The National's experimental arrangements on their seventh LP reveals itself in the third ear. It strikes irst like a mysterious whisper on “Nobody Else Will Be There,” hushed as if frontman Matt Berninger is singing to you in the dark. Deeper within the “Beast”, the Ohioans take their trademark melancholic, lyrical roots to new Radiohead-evoking rock heights, where synth fuzz ills out “Walk It Back” and a hypnotic undercurrent sweeps the bottom of “Born to Beg.” On the indietronica track “I'll Still Destroy You,” peace and chaos collide as Berninger reveals, “I'm just trying to stay in touch with anything I'm still in touch with.” Frankness at its inest.

2. Kesha, “Rainbow” Dr. Luke survivor and former Jim Beamswigging pop bot Kesha Rose Sebert made

the queerest mainstream album of the year, drawing from her own dark-horse experiences to create her most authentic recording, vocally and otherwise – one she dedicated to her fellow outcasts and underdogs. From her rise-above credo on the lovely guitar “Bastards” opener to her delightfully weird song about a queer afterlife, “Spaceship,” _Rainbow_ is the album 2017's shitstorm desperately needed: One marked by individuality, empowerment and survival.

1. Lorde, “Melodrama” Grammy nominated for Album of the Year, “Melodrama” pulses with lived emotional fervor, as its forlorn creator struggles to sort through sordid love to ind her best self again amid the remaining remnants (“Supercut,” a vocal paradise) and self-imposed blame (her devastating Kate Bush moment, “Writer in the Dark”). Elegant keys swirl into surging Robynesque dance loor fodder, vocal beds serve atmospheric percussion-like qualities. Thematically, Lorde's timeless exploration of love's highs and lows is captivating and wise beyond her 20 years, an album that speaks to the ears as much as the heart. World-Renowned Dance-Theater

BILL T. JONES/ ARNIE ZANE COMPANY Comes to Adrienne Arsht Center

||||||||||||||||||||||| By Scott Holland The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County proudly welcomes the magni icent, world-renowned dance-theater group Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company for its Arsht Center debut on January 6, in the Ziff Ballet Opera House. Led by acclaimed choreographer/dancer/artistic director Bill T. Jones, the company will perform Analogy/Lance: Pretty aka The Escape Artist, part of a deeply personal trilogy inspired by Jones' beloved and troubled nephew Lance T. Briggs. In Analogy/Lance: Pretty aka The Escape Artist, we meet Lance, whose battles with his own personal demons - drugs and excess - exposing audiences to the battle ield of the nightlife and underworld of the late '80s and early '90s club culture and sex trade. This “pretty boy-gangster thug,” a name he acquired in prison, holds steadfast to his often tragic and sometimes outrageously humorous narrative, while facing an uncertain future. Composer Nick Hallett's score accompanies the stunning dancers of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company with a delirious mixture of soulful lullabies, rhythm and blues, and classic house music. The music will be performed live onstage by Hallett and baritone Matthew Gamble, while the dance 54 | Hotspots.LGBT

evokes a ballet class, a lively disco and more inde inable interior landscapes. Analogy/Lance:Pretty aka The Escape Artist, is part of the Analogy Trilogy developed by Bill T. Jones with Associate Artistic Director, Janet Wong. Inspired by W.G. Sebald's The Emigrants, Jones continues his exploration of how text, storytelling and movement pull and push against each other and how another experience can be had through the combination and recombination of these elements. All three stories, while wildly different, ruminate on the nature of service, duty and the question of what de ines a life well lived. Analogy/Lance: Pretty aka The Escape Artist is commissioned by the American Dance Festival, Dancers' Workshop and the Executive Director's Fund at The Joyce Theater Foundation. It was a pleasure to sit down with Jenna Riegel (dancer) and composer Nick Hallett (composer), just a couple weeks prior to their performance here in Miami: At what age did you start performing/composing? Jenna – I started dancing in my living room for my family at around 10 years old and have

never stopped. Nick – I started performing before I can remember understanding anything else about the world…maybe 4 years old. I think I have been composing in my mind since I was 2.

How did it feel to get hired to this iconic company? Jenna – I had been working in New York when I got hired with Bill. For me it was a big shift to have work that was more consistent and almost full time including touring nationally and internationally. I was on cloud 9 when I got hired “The story deals with real issues that might make people feel to work full time making uncomfortable, but it's a true story and that's where we find heart and art with this renowned sympathy for the character.” company. Nick – Previous to working with Bill, I had self-generated my projects. What should the South Florida I had dreamed about what kind of usefulness my audiences expect out of Analogy/Lance: music would have with an incredible artist like Bill, Pretty aka The Escape Artist? and I am so excited to be working with him. Nick – the story is very relevant to You have now both been with the company for a few years, so what has been your favorite piece to perform/compose for Bill T Jones? Jenna – I don't have one favorite. We have done broad amounts of work, so it's very hard to choose. The new works are all exciting in different ways, especially since the collaborators change with new works. I'm shocked by what a vast range of work there is in Bill's repertoire. Nick - The piece that I am proudest of is the 3rd part of this trilogy. When I was new with the company we performed for a men's prison and we had to put together the piece in 4 days. It was a lot of pressure but I loved doing it. It exceeded any artistic experience I have ever had. What's your fantasy piece to perform/compose? Jenna – I dreamed up an entire piece that was all partnering where none of it is repeated. That's my fantasy piece. Nick – My next work that I am making now.

Florida, as the protagonist currently lives there and part of the story takes place in Miami. It de initely will hit home for South Florida. The story deals with real issues that might make people feel uncomfortable, but it's a true story and that's where we ind heart and sympathy for the character. Jenna – I agree 100%. My partner is from Miami and I have been to Miami many times. The nightlife experience of Miami inds itself into the movement style.

Produced by Logo TV Founder Matt Farber, the series will feature shows from six acts iconic in the LGBT community, each of whose appeal has crossed over to a mainstream audience. Outlandish kicks off on Saturday, January 20, 2018 with Jackie Hoffman “What Ever Happened to Jackie's Emmy?” Broadway veteran Jackie Hoffman, most recently nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Emmy for Ryan Murphy's Feud! shares delish Feud! and Emmy dish and much more in offensive side splitting monologues and song.

Internet sensation Randy Rainbow makes his South Florida debut with two shows on

Friday, January 26 and Saturday, January 27. The Fort Lauderdale native is known for his popular political spoofs and musical parodies that have garnered international acclaim and hundreds of millions of views.

Beloved storyteller/monologist Coco Peru returns to South Florida with a brand new show on Saturday, February 17. In “The Taming Of The Tension,” Coco invites you to her "place" for some of her favorite stories, songs, and a good dose of bullshitting with the hope that together the tension will melt away!

On Saturday, February 24 John Waters performs his one-man show “This Filthy

World—2018!” a “vaudeville” act that celebrates the ilm career and obsessive tastes of “The Pope of Trash.” This joyously devious and continuously updated monologue is a rally cry against the tyranny of good taste and serves as a call to arms for ilth followers everywhere. After a several year absence since her successful run at the Broward Center. America's favorite

Tupperware lady, Dixie Longate, returns to the Fort Lauderdale stage on Saturday, March 3. In “No Instructions”, Dixie puts away the Tupperware to make sense of a world that offers no guidebook for how to get through.

the 9th annual Boca Raton Fine Art Show returns! downtown Boca Raton • January 27 & 28

H

otWorks.org's 9th annual Boca Raton Fine Art Show returns to downtown Boca Raton on January 27 & 28, – voted in the top 100 art shows in the nation – three years in a row. Kevin Kichar will be joining the select group of fine artists exhibiting at the show. Kichar works in the ancient discipline of papermaking, an art form that was nearly lost in the miasma of modernization. Although it was still pursued Chinese and other oriental artists, papermaking all but faded from the realm of Western art. And then along came Bob Rauschenberg, who revived the Western interest in handmade paper during his 1982 visit to Jing Xian, China to work at the secretive Huan Paper Mill.

Kichar does not trace his interest in paper to Rauschenberg, and his involvement is more direct. Rauschenberg merely wished to incorporate thousandyear-old Xuan paper in the collages he was constructing at the time. Kichar actually makes the paper he utilizes in his cottonfiber tapestries. “My media begins with the hydration of cotton and natural fibers,” Kevin divulges. “The pulp is heated to set color pigments creating vivid, permanent colors. Depending on the desired results the method then varies. The traditional

method of screening the pulps produces flat, thin sheets. The more modern method of using a vacuum table, however, allows for greater control of sheet thickness and color pattern. Together these methods create the tapestries that form my works.”

In some of his more recent iterations, Kichar employs additional techniques to apply and seal layers of color and design into the dry cast cotton. Whether consisting of sheets made by traditional or more modern methods of screening wood pulps, papermaking enables Kichar to create tapestries that combine delicate beauty and unlimited versatility. There is also a public art component to Kichar's artistic lexicon. For this work, handmade tile mosaics are his medium of choice. Among his commissions are four 9by-12-foot murals in the City of Fort Lauderdale consisting of 2,500 tiles each, and six seven-foot-diameter mosaic mural medallions commissioned by the City of Plantation for a children's water park. Meet Kevin personally along with 150 other juried artists at the 9th annual Boca Raton Fine Art Show, Saturday, January 27 and Sunday, January 28, from 10am to 5pm daily. TOP EXCUSES NOT TO EXERCISE

Busted!

Y

ou could not have made a finer New Year's Resolution than to dedicate more time toward achieving a fitter, healthier, more beautiful body. So why haven't you been to the gym, seen a trainer, or laced up those running shoes yet? Remember, besides making you look better, regular exercise can also prevent obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, hypertension, Alzheimer's disease and Type 2 diabetes. In addition to these bonuses, many people have found that regular working out can significantly elevate their moods and boost self-esteem. Here are a few commonly held excuses for not exercising and why you need to get over yourself and

get to the gym… today! “I'm too busy to exercise.” What a lame excuse. You make time for those things that matter most – your family, job, social life, etc. Your health is just as important as any of these. Schedule your workouts into your daily activities and stick to it! Get up an hour earlier and take a power walk before going to work. Pack a gym bag and stop at the gym on your way home from the office. Busier and more important people than you find the time regularly to stay fit and healthy. “Exercise is boring.” Maybe you 're the one who is boring. Doing the same routine every time you hit the gym will produce diminishing results and leave you bored and frustrated for sure. Define your goals, change your workouts, hire a personal trainer to help you come up with a new workout. Try yoga, swimming, or any of the classes offered at your gym or community center. Expand your horizons! “I'll put off exercising until it gets warmer this spring.” While you procrastinate, you also become fatter, sedentary and more unhappy with yourself. There's no time like the present to get up and get moving toward a new healthier lifestyle. Start with one morning power walk or one yoga class after work. Besides, in sunny Florida this excuse doesn't hold water!

“I can't exercise because I have aches and pains and health issues.” I never take on a new client without getting a doctor's clearance. You should never begin a new exercise program before getting a check-up from your doctor or health care professional. Sure, herniated discs, arthritis, high blood pressure, etc. are serious issues, but not impossible to deal with. For the most part, exercise done right can help you build flexibility at the joints and manage the pain of arthritis better than some traditional treatment programs. Regular training with manageable weights, yoga, stretching classes, and low impact aerobic routines have been shown to decrease pain and increase overall fitness levels. As the New Year unfolds, don't get left behind by friends and co-workers who have already embraced the fitness lifestyle Contact Tom Bonanti at TrainerTomB@aol.com for more inspiration! R

oy Moore (R-Pedophile) lost to Democrat Doug Jones in Alabama, a true Hanukkah miracle, probably prompted from Roy Moore’s wife saying Moore isn’t antiSemitic because he has a Jew lawyer! But man are conservatives taking it hard, including Moore himself who as of this writing still hasn’t conceded the race to Jones. Unfortunately for Moore, the joke is on him for not realizing that God is a 14-year-old girl who doesn’t want to touch his private parts. Even Donald Trump and Steve Bannon have said Moore should accept defeat and move on. But not everyone is ready to call Moore a loser. Kevin Swanson, for example, would rather call the people of Alabama the losers. Frantically masturbating losers at that. “The 2016 assessment of P*rnography sites have found that the top three states that spend the most time in P*rnography are Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas,” Swanson says on his radio show Dec. 14. [Side note: the 2016 Assessment of Pornography Sites was an initiative spearheaded by Jeff Sessions after he was shocked to learn that black men could not only vote, but they could also look at daguerreotypes of naked white ladies on the Internet machine.] “As we consider the reasons why a state would tip toward Doug Jones,” Swanson continues, “we’ve got to conclude that that state probably has significant sexual problems, especially since Doug Jones is so in favor of sexual perversion, transgenderism and homosexuality. Evidently, the state of Alabama must have a problem with sexuality.” Yes, a state where over 650,000 people vote for a man who has multiple women accusing him of being a sex creep to them when they were teenagers and who was BANNED FROM THE MALL for sex creep behavior definitely does have a problem with sexuality. Especially a woman’s right to control her own. It is amazing that Swanson can utter the words “Doug Jones is so in favor of sexual perversion” out loud and not be instantly

disappear into a poof of sex offender dust. “There’s a problem with hypocrisy in this country that goes very very deep,” Swanson says without irony. “Unless there is a spiritual awakening, I think these conservative states are going to become liberal in their moral values within another five, 10 or 20 years.” “By the way, the top P*rn search word in Alabama and Mississippi is ‘lesbian,’” Swanson reveals. “So another indication that the father’s generation is dabbling in P*rn, the children’s generation will go head over heels for some of the most egregious sexual crimes that men ever engage in.” Weird, but not making Swanson’s list of “egregious sexual crimes” for some reason is making a 14-year-old girl touch your 30-year-old d*ck. “If the fathers are doing P*rnography, the kids are going to turn into homosexuals,” Swanson says. “The fathers will hide their sin and the children will come out of the closet with it.” There’s so much wrong with that claim. What does Swanson mean by “doing P*rnography”? Are “the fathers” P*rno actors? Is he saying that dads who do P*rno will have kids who one day stumble onto their Dad Porn and the act of watching it will make them gay? That’s not how that works. Then again, if Swanson wanted to drastically cut the amount of P*rn the next generation watches, having as many of their dads as possible doing P*rn would be a good way to accomplish that. So get out there and do P*rn, dads. For the sake of the children.

Brian Michael

Hayley Kiyoko The past 12 months have seen us finding refuge in our own queer selves. The sheer volume of LGBT-themed cultural content allowed a lot of us to see taking the occasional break from the harsh political and social climate of this year as a form of self-care, even if it was just to swoon to the "TRL"endorsed, girl-loves-girl pop of upstart singer Hayley Kiyoko. Her summer single “Feelings was the bounce we needed and we want 2018 to make her a household name. And on the subject of amazing lesbians, if you haven't had a chance to get into Netflix's "Godless", a western that involves a town populated almost entirely by women, then you're late to the romance between Mary Agnes ("Nurse Jackie"'s Merritt Wever) and Callie (newcomer Tess Frazer). Michelle Dockery ("Downton Abbey") is in this one, too, so stop what you're doing and watch. They have rifles. We're also very here for the bisexual journalist and

herbal healer Nova (Rutina Wesley) on the amazing and gorgeous "Queen Sugar" (not to mention transgender actor Brian Michael who played a trans male police officer on that show), for the comicsnerd-power lesbian Maggie Sawyer (played by Floriana Lima) on "Supergirl", and for Melanie Chandra on CBS's "Code Black". The medical drama is, OK, fine, kind of for your parents, but we can't get enough of Chandra's lesbian doctor. And she's the only Indian lesbian character on network TV, so she's vital (also crush-worthy, as

several woman-loving women we know have informed us). Lesbians behind the camera made a dent in yearend critic's polls, with Dee Rees's "Mudbound" (also on Netflix, see how easy this is?) earning acclaim and a Golden Globe acting nomination for Mary J. Blige, while Angela Robinson's ambitiously polyamorous "Professor Marston and The Wonder Women" earned critical respect if not the huge audience it deserved. We also loved the powerful documentary "Whose

“God’s Own Country”

“American Gods”

Streets?" from directors Sabaah Folayan and Damon Davis. It told the stories of Ferguson, Missouri, protestors, some of whom were queer people of color putting their beliefs into actions for the cause of justice. In theaters, the gay hot ticket was (and still is) "Call Me By Your Name", a beautiful post-"Brokeback" love story between young men not having to hide their affection "quite" as much as those vintage cowboys. Making a smaller cultural splash was the UK indie "God's Own Country", but it was no less moving or sexy. When it hits home video, go find it (and turn on the captions because those Yorkshire accents are tough). "Will & Grace" came back, as though it had never left the '90s, and it felt like comfort food; "American Gods" gave us two queer Muslim characters (Omid Abtahi and Mousa Kraish) and a mindblowingly tender and wildly explicit sex scene that scorched its way into our hearts while serving a big, erect, middle finger to the

current belch of antiimmigrant ideas swirling around the cultural swamp; "Talk Show the Game Show" was the weirdest, queerest, bigword-havingest thing on deep cable thanks to creator and host Guy Branum refusing to dumb it down for you; a middle-school-aged character (Joshua Rush) came out in a sweetly moving sequence on the hit Disney Channel show "Andi

Mack"; "Star Trek: Discovery"

Spongebob The Musical

finally put gays in space, and "The Exorcist" finally gave us a priest making out with a man on national television. Triumphs, all. Last but not least, Broadway, which matters deeply if you can afford the

ticket prices. "Dear Evan Hansen" won Tony Awards, made audiences cry, and turned Ben Platt into a Millennial heartthrob, which works for us. And the

Spongebob Squarepants musical (yes, automatically queer, don't argue with us) has people all turned on by the guy who plays the plankton. So here's to 2018, which promises more queer rebellion, an all-Cher jukebox musical, and the possibility of a Trump indictment. Now, why did Hulu have to go and cancel "Difficult People"?

NEED WOOD

DO I NEED A

SOCIAL CRUTCH?

H

— Quadroped

y

Dear Quadroped: First off, I’m not buying your “poor me” bulls--t. Support groups bend over backwards for their members. You’d have to be a real *putz* (that’s Jewish for *putz*) to be thrown out of a group that specializes in letting people b-tch and moan about pain.

You need to do a personal inventory and get an honest appraisal of this wonderful persona you think you have. You know, the one that’s driving everybody away. I’d start by asking the support group leader the real reason why he threw you out. I’m not trying to be mean or anything, but… wait. Who am I kidding? I love to be mean! I don’t give a s--t about your HIV or your crutches. Rules are rules and they apply to everybody, including the likes of you. Rule #1: You will attract the kinds of people you want if you become that which you want to attract. Rule #2: There is no getting around rule number one. Something tells me you haven’t worked out the understandable anger, resentment and depression around your HIV and fibromyalgia and that it’s coming out in your interactions with people. A little therapy might be in order. As for not telling prospective meat about your crutches till you meet, FORGET IT. To put someone in that position is unethical. To put yourself in that position is masochistic. Everybody loses. I’d lay off the mainstream hook-up sites if I were you and concentrate on sites that attract men with your conditions. Hey, you gotta go where the fish are biting and where you’re casting your bait ain’t nobody even sniffing. The best places to meet people most likely to accept you are support groups. Of course, you need a charm transplant first. After you get one, call your local hospital’s patient education department and ask them for fibromyalgia support groups. Join them too. Also, check out people who have crutch fetishes (hey, when in Rome…). fetishbank.net and other sites specialize in people who like a little crutch in their crotch.

y

ey Woody, I am disabled with a disease called fibromyalgia. I am retired now-- on disability, use crutches, and deal with some pretty wicked symptoms. I try to meet people either face-to-face or online. I always make it clear that I am looking for a range of connections so if they don’t feel comfortable with dating a gimp they could go for something less stressful. I am HIV positive as well, and communicate that in my ads. Ironically, I once joined a group for HIV positive men and got kicked out because I talked about dealing with the physical pain I experienced from fibromyalgia. Most of the time I stay pretty upbeat. I make it clear I am looking for a connection and not a caretaker, but as you can imagine, my “capture rate” is pretty low. Given what the rest of the market has to offer, my medical profile isn’t doing me any favors. I have a dark, ironic sense of humor and make fun of myself and my illness. I am wondering if you have any suggestions on how to better sell myself. Also, what do you think of NOT mentioning my crutches when I’m online until I actually meet the person?
