Like every endeavor in life, it's best to proceed in an intelligent manner. Starving yourself and yo-yo dieting can harm your body, slow down your metabolism, and leave you heavier than before you started. Begin by following some sensible eating tips that will guarantee a slimmer, healthier you in 2018.
Tip No. 1: Drink plenty of water. People can confuse thirst with hunger, so you can end up eating extra calories when a tall cold glass of water is all you need. Tip No. 2: Cut back on nighttime eating. Mindless eating before you go to bed is a sure way to gain weight big-time. Try not to eat
By Tom Bonanti within 2-3 hours before bed-time. If you must eat something, try eating an apple or a scoop of low-fat frozen yogurt.
Tip No. 3: Eat 4 – 5 mini meals or snacks and enjoy most of them earlier in the day while you are still active. Eating this way, you will ind that you are not as hungry during the day, and less likely to binge at night.
Tip No. 4: Eat protein at every meal. Protein is more satisfying than carbs and
keeps you feeling full longer. It's also essential for maintaining and building muscle mass, and burns fat.
high iber cereal, and low- fat milk. Skipping breakfast causes your body to store fat and leads to binge eating later in the day.
Tip No. 5: Stock the pantry with healthy, convenient foods. Having ready-to-eat, low calorie snacks and simple meals protects you from eating fast foods. Here are some great ideas: frozen veggies, whole grain pastas, reduced fat cheese, bags of salad, canned tomatoes and beans, pre-cooked, grilled chicken breasts. Tip No. 6: Order children's portions at restaurants. I know this sounds silly, but regular restaurant portions are killers for your waistline.
Tip No. 9: Include iber in your diet. Fiber aids digestion, prevents constipation, lowers cholesterol and helps with weight loss. Most women require 25 grams of iber daily and most guys should start with 38 grams daily. Good iber sources include oatmeal, beans, whole grain foods, and a variety of fruits and vegetables.
Tip No. 7: Exchange a cup of pasta or piece of bread for a cup of vegetables. Simply by eating less starches and more vegetables, you can lose a pants size in a month!
Tip No. 10: Understand portion sizes. To right-size your meals, use a kitchen scale and measuring cup to measure your meals for a week or two. Use smaller plates and glasses to downsize portions.

The holidays are behind us, and a new year means a new focus on your personal health. It's time to get back in shape and have a free, annual wellness visit at Care Resource. New, uninsured patients can meet with a primary care physician to have a basic exam, routine labs and a cholesterol screening.
Care Resource’s Registered Dietitian, Gloria Cabral, would like to stress the importance of a cholesterol check-up as a healthy, annual practice. "The body needs some cholesterol in order to function properly. The body's cell walls, or membranes, need cholesterol and the body
uses cholesterol to produce hormones, vitamin D, and the bile acids that help to digest fat, but, the body needs only a small amount of cholesterol to meet its needs. To lower cholesterol, the American Heart Association recommends that one eat low saturated fat foods, quit smoking and exercise. Aside from adding zing to almost any dish, some studies show garlic may help lower cholesterol; it's also been found to prevent blood clots, reduce blood pressure, and protect against infections." Join the Care Resource family and help us provide you with the absolute best opportunity for a long, healthy, and productive life. Care Resource services are
provided on a sliding-fee scale based on income and household size. This scale can provide reduced fees for those who are uninsured, have a low income, or may be undocumented. This is the time to make a commitment to your personal health and wellness in 2018. A free wellness visit includes a physical exam, a cholesterol screening, blood pressure testing, and routine labs. The following promotion is available for new patients without insurance from January 1 to March 31, 2018, and by appointment only. Please call 305-576-1234 ext. 470 (English) or 471 (EspaĂąol) to schedule an appointment. This promotion is only valid for new medical patients without insurance. Acceptance of this offer is considered an acknowledgement by the patient that they are not insured. Offer has no cash value. Promotion is subject to change or termination at any time, without notice. Followup visit must be scheduled within six weeks of initial visit. This offer is valid from January 1 to March 31, 2018.

JACKIE HOFFMAN
To Perform at the Sunshine Cathedral on Saturday January 20 |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| By Scott Holland ackie Hoffman has been in many Television shows, many movies, and has been on the New York Stage too many times to count. However it was her Emmy Nominated role as Mamacita in Ryan Murphy's Emmy Nominated “Feud: Bette and Joan” that shot her into superstardom. I thought it was a good time to sit down with Jackie for this exclusive Hotspots interview, as she is about to perform at the Sunshine Cathedral on Saturday January 20 as part of the Outlandish Series.
Were you always a ham, even as a kid, or when did the performing bug bite you? I was a prenatal ham
What was your irst professional/paid gig? Shootout at the trailblazer saloon at Hershey Park in Hershey PA.
When did you realize performing would be your career? I wanted it as long as I can remember. I realized it would be my career when I joined Second City comedy troupe in Chicago
You have guest appeared on too many TV shows, Movies, and Theater to mention , do you have a favorite(s) of each and why? That's a good question. Hard to pick one for TV, but I'll say either “The Cosby Show” or Dan Aykroyd's sitcom “Soul Man,” because the other guest stars were John Goodman and Big Bird. For movies it's John Waters A Dirty Shame. Watch it and you'll see why. For theater I usually say “On the Town” but since this is a gay publication I'll say “Xanadu.”
You have also done a lot of voice over work. Is there a favorite character that you do a
got into drag and was face to face with Jessica Lange's Joan Crawford it wasn't hard to get into character at all. How amazing was it to work with 2 legends….Jessica Lane and Susan Sarandon? Beyond amazing but you'll hear all about that in my show!
Your facial expression at the Emmys when you did not win (I am still in disbelief over) was priceless. Was it planned or was it something you just came up with? Planned
voice for and why (no pressure, but I love Family Guy)? Family Guy I said 3 words! I played Dilbert's mother on the shore lived Dilbert series, and that was my favorite.
Your solo shows at Joe's Pub used to be a New Yorkers secret gem, but I think Andy Cohen has opened it up to the world. Do you write all the shows yourself? I write with the help of my director Michael Schiralli. I write the song lyrics myself, and my piano player rights the music. Usually it's Bobby Peaco who is amazing. How did you get cast in Feud as Mamacita, and how hard was it to get into character? I was cast off of an audition tape, and I had worked with Ryan Murphy before so he knew me; once I
You are currently on Broadway in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. How is that going? It's great and I'm working with an awesomely talented company, but its hard work. There are a a lot of kiddies in the audience. I also dish about that plenty in my show.
You are coming to town as part of the Outlandish Comedy Series on January 20, and your show is entitled: Jackie Hoffman “What Ever Happened to Jackie's Emmy?” What should the South Florida audiences expect from this show? Expect to hear stuff you will not hear anywhere else, laugh really hard and be offended!

FORTIFY YOURSELF AGAINST COLDS AND THE FLU THIS SEASON! November through March is Flu Season in the United States. While a flu shot is the best protection against the virus, there are
several other ways to help avoid the flu:
We are lucky here in South Florida for many reasons, not the least of which is our fabulous, tropical weather. One thing we can't escape is the onslaught of flu season which seems to set in and claim its victims everywhere around this time every year like clockwork. Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can be mild to very severe with symptoms that include fever, headache, fatigue, body aches, dry cough, sore throat and runny nose. People with the flu may feel nauseous and have vomiting and diarrhea, although these symptoms are more common in children than adults. Flu can lead to pneumonia and other serious illnesses for people who are particularly vulnerable such as those with compromised immune systems.

• Stay home if you are sick. That means the gym too! Working out while you are sick will cause more harm than good. Never even attempt to work out with a fever, body aches and chills. Rest and drink plenty of fluids. • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. • Wash your hands often to avoid spreading germs.
• Avoid touching your nose, mouth or eyes to help keep germs from entering your body.
It is especially important for people who fall into one of the following high- risk categories outlined by the Centers for Disease Control to get a flu shot:
• Children age 6-59 months and their household contacts and out of home care givers. • Women who will be pregnant during the flu season. • People aged 50 or older. • People of any age who have certain chronic medical conditions. • People who care for anyone at high risk. • Health care workers. Those at high risk should contact their primary care physicians to discuss where and when to get the flu shot.
Some Healthy Measures to Ward Off the “Bug”:
• Get lots of fresh air. Take fresh air breaks at work and invest in some leafy plants for your workplace. The air in the workplace and in closed- up planes can be especially toxic. • Get sufficient sleep to give your body time to repair, replenish, and detoxify itself. • Keep stress in check, as it can depress the immune system. • Don't forget your workouts: daily exercise
helps to boost your immune system. • Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day to ensure hydration. • Eat lots of brightly colored veggies and fruits loaded with vitamin “C” to help keep your immune system strong. • Stay away from fast foods and sugary foods as these can drag your immune system down.

Bump “Go to the gym more” down a notch on your list of New Year's resolutions and move “Have better sex” up one. Here's how to fulfill that promise to yourself. Avoid using sex to alleviate boredom and/or subsidize your emotional discontent
1
I'm willing to bet you use random hookups to fill a void in your life, like when you're so bored you stare at the phone for hours waiting for someone to tell you you're hot, or the emotional distress you've created for yourself by being afraid/really terrible at commitment. (Yes, I'm psychic.) We all do this, actually. Well, gay men, at least; that's the only demographic I'll claim to represent without permission. The problem is, more times than not this behavior leads to further unhappiness because the thing you thought was going to provide gratification only serves to make you more disappointed in yourself for doing it “again”. Vicious cycle. Stop it. When you're bored, find something productive to do that doesn't include half-assed pelvic thrusts. Take your pile of neglected mags to Starbucks, dust off your bike, or holler at a friend to go bowling or roller-skating (fucking yes, roller skating; you won't believe the caliber of hotties bopping around the rink). Trust me, you'll be more satisfied at the end of those activities than you will cleaning some stranger's rogue jizz off your pillowcase.
Communicate better with your partner(s)
2
How will your partner know what you crave in bed if you don't talk to one another? Certainly this is more difficult when you're jiving for a quickie (I recommend saving the kink until at least the third date unless previously discussed), but you should be as direct as possible regarding what gets you off as much as you can. Trish Bendix, managing editor of Grindr's digital magazine INTO, agrees. “Communication is the number one way to have the best sex possible,” she says. “If your partner is in the right area but you'd like something done softer or slower or harder and faster, or perhaps prefer lips to hands or other extremities, take the opportunity in the moment to guide them in the right direction. Sexy talk is sexy, and leads to better sex. Bodies and desires vary, and it's impossible for your lover to know what works for you unless you clue them in. The more safe and open you both feel, the better the sex will be.”
Stop f*cking hot idiots to satisfy your narcissistic sense of self-worth I think I want one thing – a lean, rippled Adonis who gets me all verklempt when he takes his off clothes – when I'm actually happier with a fit-to-average guy with individuality and a wild sense of humor. Yet I'll almost always pass up this dude for the one with washboard abs and the personality of a cereal box because somehow it validates my own narcissism (if he wants “me”, I must be doing something right in the physicalattractiveness department; that's the thought process at least). The more enjoyable sex almost always comes from the guy who has more of the actual things I seek in a long-term partner, however, opposed to the one my eyes are telling me I need, and the quicker me and you both accept this as fact, the better sex will be for us on a more regular basis.
3 Hotspots.LGBT | 85
Find someone who's equally excited to fulfill your fantasies Sometimes we're embarrassed by our own sexual proclivities, but unless what you're into is illegal in more than three states, you should feel confident enough to wave your freak flag freely. Because why waste your time and orgasms on lame-os in bed? Be secure in what gets you off (different strokes for different folks, right?) and choose the partner who's f*cking down for it.
4
1 . 2 . 3 . 4 . 5 Go out there and meet someone organically instead of digitally Whatever happened to striking up a conversation with someone in a bar, spending a couple hours getting to know him over drinks, then taking him back to your place to fuck his brains out all night? Is that fairytale dead? While it's not as popular as opening up an app to choose from a barrage of ondemand bang buddies, there's a lot more excitement and overall satisfaction in meeting a potential sex partner organically and working up to the main event. The outcome of the latter almost always results in more pleasure, because not only do I have time to make an informed decision about getting down and dirty with this guy but I also get a better sense of the bigger picture – like, if I want to cuddle afterward (from which I also derive pleasure), which isn't always the case with the digital tricks I've spent a full five minutes chatting with before inviting them over to blow me. Granted, there's a huge disparity in the chances of you scoring in the real world versus with sex-hungry people online, but at least you'll be happier with yourself in the end and perhaps even make a new real-world friend. When was the last time that happened with a nooner?

DONALD TRUMP’S GOP BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI
I
’d say, “Well, we survived the first year of the Trump Administration,” but the truth is not everyone did or will. Take this tax scam bill that the Republicans passed and Trump signed. By removing the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act, they’ve essentially removed a fundamental structure of the program. The goal is to for the whole program to collapse. The same goes for the Children’s Health Insurance Program. But here’s the thing, CHIP and the ACA isn’t just a government program. It’s access to health insurance, which is access to health care, which is access to life. Republicans want us to go back to the “good old days” when Americans who got sick or injured went bankrupt or died or both. Then there’s the full on assault on LGBTQ rights, with a heavy emphasis on anti-trans hate. Every year since 1999 people have observed Nov. 20 as Transgender Day of Remembrance, and every year the list of transgender people murdered because of hate grows. Trans women of color are at an especially great risk of being murdered, not to mention physically and sexually assaulted. The Trump Administration’s targeted campaign against transgender people certainly isn’t helping. Then there’s climate change denial, trying to bait North Korea into nuclear war, rolling back environmental regulations that keep nasty shit out of our air and water, anti-Muslim rhetoric, immigration panic, closing our doors to refugees, support for even looser gun laws, turning a blind eye to sexual assault, denying Black Lives Matter, anti-science bias, restricting reproductive freedom (which includes the assault on Planned Parenthood and access to birth control), further destabilizing the middle east, implicitly and explicitly supporting white supremacist Nazis, slashing the social safety net (food stamps, housing assistance, medicare — they want it all gone), attacking journalists, and complete abandonment of the truth or reality. Any of these alone could have deadly consequences. Taken together, the danger is so great that it’s hard to wrap your brain
around. I’ve read plenty this year of “alarm fatigue” and “chaos fatigue” when it comes to trying to follow the shit show that is this presidency. It’s damn hard to do. It’s exhausting to be presented with a new slew of horrors every day. In fact, I’m tired of being exhausted. I literally have fatigue. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: elections have consequences. Local, state, national elections can literally change your life, especially if you are part of a vulnerable population. The Republicans were literally willing to put up with anything to get their tax cuts for the rich rammed through. Children, the poor, racial minorities, immigrants, LGBTQ people, women — all happily sacrificed in the process. I saw a bumper sticker that read, “Vote for Democrats. We’re not perfect, but they’re nuts!” Instead of dealing with issues like income and education inequality, mass incarceration, and police violence, many white Democrats are focused on how to get racist and ignorant Trump supporters to vote for Dems. And while I am pleased to see mostly across the board support from Democrats for LGBTQ people, it could have and should have come much sooner. So while Democrats will often disappoint you, Republicans will often try to kill you. And I think that’s a damn important distinction.

By Woody Miller
NEED WOOD
COME AND
KNOCK ON THEIR DOOR
H
ey Woody, My partner of four years has started suggesting threesomes. I’m acting shocked because we’re monogamous but I must admit I’ve had fantasies (including foursomes and fivesomes). We talked about the rules. He says no kissing, he only tops, and I can be a total slut while he enjoys watching. He wants me to find the right mantoy, and suggested someone married or for hire, so there’s no risk of attachments, and only once every three months. But I’m scared of being left out while they vent out their animal lust - on my bed! My boyfriend is 16 years younger so that could wreck me emotionally. Is our relationship doomed, or is the fun just starting? Where and how do I find men for threesomes anyway? Help! I’m very confused yet getting very horny. — Panting & Pouting
y
Dear Panting: Before I dispense with the advice, do a math problem. *Without using a calculator.* So, you’re driving a bus from London to Milford Haven in Wales. In London, 17 people get on the bus. In Reading, six people get off the bus and nine people get on. In Swindon, two people get off and four get on. In Cardiff, 11 people get off and 16 people get in. In Swansea, three people get off and five people get on. In Carmathen, six people get off and three get on. You then arrive at Milford Haven. Now what was the name of the bus driver? Answer: Think hard.
Answer: You, you idiot.
My point, and I do have one, is that in the race to get people on and off your bed you forgot the most important person—You, you idiot. Your letter was filled with your boyfriend’s wish list but not a peep about yours. The only way threesomes work is if both partners have an equal say about the rules. I don’t hear “equal” in your letter. I hear steamroller. Which explains why you’re laying flat on the pavement. So you need to go back to your bossy boyfriend with a list of YOUR requirements, compare them to his and see if you can work things out. And while you’re at it, ask him why he made you the bus driver when it was his idea to wheel around town looking for another pair of testicles to swing over his bed. There’s a huge power imbalance going on in your relationship and you need to straighten that out before you start playing with fire. Assuming you can morph from doormat to power tramp, getting a third guy is going to take some work, depending on how picky you are (and I might add, how picky your prey is). Unless the radiance of your beauty makes sunglasses a must at the bar, you’re going to have to do some heavy prowling—online and off. Plus, there’s a bunch of questions you have to answer: Do you guys have the same taste? What if he likes the quarry and you don’t? What if Game-Boy likes your boyfriend and not you? Who gets veto power and when? I like the idea of starting out by ordering in. It’s the safest way to explore how to open up your relationship. Better to cough up some cash now than to spit up your relationship later.
