Exclusive Interview on the YouTube Sensation!

The YouTube Sensation to Perform at Sunshine Cathedral

R

andy Rainbow is a comedian, actor, singer, writer, but became incredibly famous for his YouTube Videos. In his earlier work, he stages fake phone conversations with famous people by editing real audio clips of those celebrities. He was building a following, but his breakout video came in 2010 when he posted "Randy Rainbow is Dating Mel Gibson. In the 2016 American Presidential campaign Rainbow gained a larger audience, with a series of spoof interviews and musical parodies skewering the election process, and the candidates especially Donald Trump and his cronies.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Randy Rainbow for this exclusive Hotspots Interview, right before his appearance at the Sunshine Cathedral as part of the Outlandish Series.

Were you always outspoken even as a kid, or when did the performer in you come out? I was actually a pretty shy kid. I've always had a lot to say but have also always been somewhat introverted. That's how the performer in me was born. Like many performers, I needed to create personas that would allow me to express myself. My family has also always been hardcore into musicals, so it's in my genes. When did you get your irst professional (Paid) gig? Does my Bar Mitzvah count? Wouldn't matter, anyway. I didn't have one. I sang on a horrible children's album when I was about 11. I think I got about twelve cents for it. When did you realize that entertainment would be your career? I've always known on some level but I guess the inal nail in the cof in was when I took a leap of faith and quit my day job several years ago. Frankly, performing is the only thing I enjoy and the only thing I'm good at professionally so there was never really a choice.

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO Drinking local beer just because it is local

As a social activist, I’m a huge fan of supporting local businesses. “Nonetheless, something that people need to recognize is that the word ‘local’ (and ‘craft,’ for that matter) is not a synonym for good, better, or best. I’m not the first or last person to say this, but there is a lot of bad beer out in the market these days. I mean, we have over 4,000 craft breweries in the US right now — do you really think all of them are amazing? No, of course not. And smart retailers and bar managers need to recognize this. Local is great and all, but quality is king.” — Ashley Routson, writer, Drink With The Wench.

MARCO Mark Silver’s New Jewelry Company

“Marco was created on the platform to be very personal while using the internet as a vehicle to target the gay men's custom wedding ring market.”

Most of us know Mark Silver from either buying jewelry from him over the years or his generous work with charities around town. On a personal level he has been involved with the Hotspots Holiday celebration since day one and donated around 30 pieces of jewelry for the silent auction that raises money for the Pride center at Equality Park. As he recently created a new jewelry company, Marco designer Jewelry, I thought it was a good time to sit down with Mark to find out about how he got started in Jewelry and more about his exciting new company that is geared toward gay men.

By Scott Holland

At what age did you realize you loved designing jewelry? I always had a passion for the design of fine jewelry. I was blessed to have traveled to Europe quite often at a young age in my career. After walking through the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy and looking at the creativeness I became captivated by gold and silver jewelry design. I was also fortunate to live in Milan, Italy for a time which opened my eyes to the beauty of fine jewelry.

Finished Diamonds two-tone 14K Gold Wedding Rings

What made you take the leap from the Fashion world to open your own Jewelry store? I was working as an apparel designer/merchandiser on 7th Ave in the garment center of New York City from 1977 to 1986. I worked for European import companies to increase their business dealings in the USA. My work consisted of traveling extensively to Italy, France and England for product development of fabrics and trends for the U.S. market. I continued to manufacture the clothing collections and work in Japan, India, Taiwan, Korea and Hong Kong. I was very fortunate that my talent in merchandising the fashion trends sold in major department stores, specialty boutiques and national chain stores. In 1986 I decided to leave the clothing industry taking the marketing knowledge I learned and the vision I naturally had to challenge the fine jewelry industry. My goal was to create designs that are classic, timeless, innovative but most of all unique. I want all my pieces to reflect jewelry that are works of art.

You are now in Lauderdale by the Sea, How has that area been for Argenti? TH

In 2009, I opened the 4 Argenti showroom in Lauderdale by the Sea and it turned out to be an amazing town with a very diverse mix of locals and visitors. This flourishing location helped build the popularity of my LGBT product line. I began my frequent campaign advertising in Hot Spots magazine and the response was an enormous success. I joined different business organizations networking my specialty in custom design jewelry and 2 years after I opened I had the good fortune (2011 to 2014) to become the President of the Lauderdale by the Sea Chamber of Commerce.

“The bottom line is making my guest very happy and I am the man to design it affordably with long lasting quality.”

Diamond Stacking Ring

What made you move from New York to South Florida? In 1986 I opened my first showroom retail store in Greenwich Village, NYC and started selling my exclusive jewelry collection “Argenti” Designer Jewelers. It was in a great location with heavy foot traffic and I had the opportunity to do custom work for Barneys New York store. This all worked to help make my custom jewelry design a destination for unique one of kind affordable pieces. In 1991 the Argenti NYC business was sold and I left New York City to find a better and healthier way of life. I opened Argenti in Plantation, Florida, Las Olas Riverfront and now in Lauderdale by the Sea….one of the most beautiful towns in Broward County. Hotspots.LGBT | 35

Do you repair Jewelry? Yes‌absolutely. I repair all fine jewelry whether it's gold, platinum or silver. I do it affordably with great care. It's important for me to be courteous and respectful that someone entrusted me with a piece of jewelry to work on that may have been handed down from generation to generation. I am proud to say that I can make anything that is broken look like new again and have been successfully doing that for 32 years. I believe that client relationships in any business are very important and I make it a point to be nurturing and embracing with everyone that I have the opportunity to work with.

Why did you create Marco? As a local business in Fort Lauderdale, I meet many men and women from around the world that have me design their wedding rings and personal jewelry. When gay marriage was legalized, I realized there was a demand for gay couples to have custom wedding rings. Men wanted me to design their rings according to personal specifications ranging from birthstones to heirloom family jewelry infused into the new designs. I realized how important this is and how gratifying it became for me. I focused on men's wedding rings which I make with PRIDE. It's been several months that I have been working with Matt Myers, an extremely talented web designer who created the vision I had for MARCODesignerJeweler.com. I plan to advertise this web site nationally as a leading gay men's custom jewelry designer. MARCO was created on the platform to be very personal while using the internet as a

vehicle to target the gay men's custom wedding ring market. I will personally use skype as a tool to engage gay couples to have their involvement selecting their custom wedding rings. Two men that are to be wed should have a happy, memorable and loving experience when looking for their wedding rings. Many times clients ask me to integrate the inherited gold, gemstones and diamonds from the jewelry of their mom, dad or other relatives in their new rings. When completed these jewelry designs carry a dignity and emotional power like no other piece they own. I have created an atmosphere that allows the process of designing custom rings to be a joyful experience. I am elated that the finished jewelry that I create is more than what my clients expected and all the Video Testimonials on the MARCODesignerJeweler.com web site prove that. Now my intention is set to take this personal, relaxed and pleasurable experience and blend it with technology to expand it nationally.

Do I have to be rich to buy Marco Wedding Bands? I have no price barriers with the jewelry I create for MARCODesignerJeweler.com. I adore when a client appreciates my exclusive design work. Every custom design comes with a very detailed free estimate of what it will cost to build that specific design. I spend a great deal of time and care on my free estimates so the consumer understands every component needed at a cost effective price from me. I treat the buyer the same way I would want to be treated keeping in mind what their specific

budget is for the work to be done…and I make it happen. The bottom line is making my guest very happy and I am the man to design it affordably with long lasting quality.

Do you have payment plans? My custom design jewelry that I create from a drawing will take between 4 to 6 weeks. There will be fittings during the interim build process. Clients initially would leave a good faith deposit when I begin the handmade wax model. Thereafter they can pay the balance at their convenience in segments or upon completion. I never installed a payment plan because I wouldn't want anyone to be obligated to make payments at designated times. I like it better with “pay as you go” on your time and the balance to be paid when finished.

How does it work when you start a new design with a customer? MARCO was created to focus on custom design jewelry and making the client very involved in the conceptual stages. I begin asking a lot of questions to get a feel for their ideas.

What is your concept and do you have any vision in your mind of what you may like? My exclusive design book has hundreds of pictures to study and I leave them to review that. Typically after that there begins a sense of knowing what they want. Once we narrow the details and the pieces fit together I start drawing on paper the new jewelry design until it's perfect and then once approved the process begins. Anything can be made, in any precious metal with any gemstone. If you have old jewelry that you

“I am grateful to work with clients who come to my showroom location from around the world when visiting Fort Lauderdale.”

just don't wear anymore, I can use that old gold to make new modern designs and change your yellow gold into white gold. If a person doesn't want a completely new piece of jewelry I will repair and modify all kinds of jewelry.

What does the future hold for Marco? I am grateful to work with clients who come to my showroom location from around the world when visiting Fort Lauderdale. The OutField

Dan Woog

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| By Dan Woog

More than 10 years ago, I wrote my irst “OutField” column. The goal was to offer a mix of stories: national events and trends; pro iles of athletes, from high pro ile to unknown, in sports ranging from major to obscure. I had lots of ideas. I could interview then-NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue about how having a gay son helped him become a PFLAG dad. I'd examine whether the Gay Games were still relevant. I'd look at how pro teams handled diversity training, offer a tribute to a gay former college football player who'd recently died of complications relating to a botched suicide attempt, and igure out why the world needed the “National Gay Golf Association.” Some of those ideas panned out. Others lamed out. In the decade since, I've mined the LGBT sports world. I covered Nike's foray into diversity and inclusion – including sponsoring several annual summits, with activists and advocates from around the country – as well what happened after the company pulled back. I've reported on a gay surfers' organization, and a gay ping-pong league (who knew?). I've pro iled an astonishing array of outstanding men and women (and some who identify as both, or neither). Lesbians climb in the boxing ring. Bisexuals swim, run and row. Transgender folks play basketball. Gay men igure skate. (Stop the presses on that last one! In fact, the hook for that story was about ighting stereotypes, not feeding into them – as I just did.)

56 | Hotspots.LGBT

When I started writing The OutField, LGBT athletes were relatively rare. Oops – that's a statement you'd have heard in the mainstream media. We actually were everywhere; it was “out” LGBT athletes who were hard to ind. Not anymore. In the past decade, the trickle of competitors who came out to teammates, coaches and (just as importantly) opponents moved from a trickle to a stream. Now it's a geyser. First in college sports, and today in high school, coming-out stories are commonplace. Outsports – the go-to website – can scarcely keep up. From the Ivy League and Big Ten to small Christian conferences, on the liberal coasts and in the conservative heartland, every day brings another out athlete.

Adam Rippon

pioneers like Pat Grif in and Helen Carroll. For longer than most of today's athletes have been alive, these women have worked iercely to make the sports world open and accepting to all. They've expanded their reach from the usual suspects – coaches and athletic administrators – to areas once thought untouchable. The column I wrote on a meeting Pat and Helen organized with representatives of LGBT and faith-based organizations was one of my favorites. Two other important trends have been the rise of trans issues in sports (including updating rules and policies by colleges and state high school athletic federations), and the importance of straight allies Hudson Taylor (special hats off to Athlete Ally's Hudson Taylor, and former Joanna Lohman NFL kicker Chris Kluwe). A decade of The OutField has been The locker room is not the only place where sports ful illing and inspiring – hopefully as much culture has evolved. It's apparent in the front of ices of to readers as to me. Our LGBT sports world is in good hands. teams, and entire leagues. Major League Baseball Which is why this is my last column. I do made a major statement by appointing Billy Bean – an ex-player who came out long after retirement – to the lots of other things besides writing once a month here: I'm an openly gay high school new post of “diversity and inclusion ambassador.” (He's since been promoted even higher.) The National soccer coach, and am very active in our Football League is proud of its Pride group, illed with United Soccer Coaches' national advocacy work, to name two. I'll continue with all that. Stadium Jumbotrons routinely feature same-sex couples on their “Kiss Cams.” Crowds cheer lustily. Their tales have an almost boring sameness. “I was so scared to come out. I worried what everyone would think. I didn't want to lose my sport. But no one cared. Now I'm so happy!” Over and over again, that's the story line. But the repetition is key. Coming-out reports inspire athletes still in the closet to take what seems like a very bold step. The fact that these stories continue to be told says something about the culture of sports. It's a changing culture I've been honored to report on for the past decade.

MAKE YOUR HOME ONE YOU'RE EXCITED TO COME BACK TO EACH DAY!

Vänt Wall Panel Design Expert Bee Heinemann Shares Best Ideas for a Happy, Cozy Home This Season and Beyond

W

hen you think of your home, does it evoke a welcoming, cozy, happy feeling? Our homes are a personal extension of ourselves. When we walk through the door, we should feel joy, contentment and peace. Although most of us want to experience those feelings in our own homes, we don't always know where to start in creating this atmosphere. Vä nt Wall Panels Interior Design Expert Bee Heinemann shares her design ideas for creating a happy, cozy home this season and beyond.

· Use Soothing Colors and Textures. Look around your home and take in your surroundings. Does it exude soothing colors

and textures that are both welcoming and inviting? A home with soothing shades and soft textures set the overall mood, think tranquil blues, greens, greys, whites and beiges. Choose soft furniture with rounded edges and hardwood loors with soft area rugs. Use soft lighting and candles to produce a calming ambience. The idea is to create a space that looks and feels softer, calmer and more relaxing.

· Channel Your Inner “Hygge.” Hygge is the Danish concept of creating a cozy atmosphere in your home. It's a choice and way of life. Find a gathering space in your home where your family can congregate. Put on your wooly socks, warm sweaters and add a few blankets. Light a ire in the ireplace, invite

a few friends or family over and play board games or watch movies together nestled up and snug. Keep a good stock of board games nearby so it's easy to grab a few family members and start up a game. · Think Minimalism. Minimalism doesn't have to mean stark surfaces and owning very little in terms of belongings, it can simply refer to decluttering the piles on the counters, getting rid of items that aren't special or of importance and getting your home organized. It's well-documented that clutter causes stress but order creates calm. When piles aren't building up and everything has a home, clean-up is easy and

quick. When it comes time for gift giving or buying something for your home, consider how the item will it into your home. Will it create more clutter or will it be an investment in your home and family. No matter what the item is, consider quality over quantity.

· Cook Meals at Home. Home cooked meals are positive for so many reasons—it saves money, provides a healthier nourishment for your family and brings the family together at the dinner table. Encourage family participation in meal planning, food prep, and cooking. Whenever a child has had a hand in meal preparation, they are more inclined to want to eat what they've cooked. Have your family take time to discuss the day, including positives and negatives and bring in conversation starters/prompts for fun.

· Surround Yourself with Things That Bring Happiness. Material items don't bring us joy, memories and experiences do. Display sentimental items around your home that evoke happy memories and are reminiscent of good times you've had. Think framed photos or artwork, a vase with seashells, a beautiful rock collected from the ocean, a bowl of your great grandmother's or something you picked up on your travels abroad. Aim for simple displays and not dust collecting clutter. · Promote Relaxation in the Home. Make home an escape from the world outside. Relaxation and family time is important to decompress and should be included in every family member's day. Encourage art together, play music, provide plenty of outdoor time, cook meals together, read, play games and watch movies and make downtime key.

· Live Intentionally. When you walk through the door of your home, put a stop to the craziness of the outside world. Leave the stress at the door mat. Make time for yourself and for your family, make time and room for love. Don't forget to say good morning and good night to your loved ones, remember to ask them about their day or to say good luck on that test. Give hugs when you leave and come back home. And take breaks to disconnect from electronics, social media and Net lix. Bee Heinemann is the Marketing Director and Interior Decorating Expert at Vänt Wall Panels. Vänt Wall Panels completely transform a room in just minutes. Inspired spaces make for inspired living. It's the most innovative, cost and user-friendly wall décor system ever created. They're perfect for every room in the house from the kitchen and bedroom to the living room and of ice. Learn more about Vänt by visiting (https://www.vantpanels.com/). Hotspots.LGBT | 67

By Chris Azzopardi

You don't have to tell Martha Stewart that gay men love her like their own mother. The influential entrepreneur and domestic diva's deep-rooted connection to the LGBTQ community goes beyond special appearances on “Ugly Betty” and “Ellen,” when she appeared as herself in a 1995 episode of the groundbreaking sitcom. Stewart, throughout her half-century-long career, has long embodied a quality near and dear to the queer community: perfection. After all, before “live your best life” was a meme, it was Stewart's honed methodology. Could that affinity for precision and flawlessness – for the perfect Christmas ham, the perfect vegetable garden, the perfect dating persona – be why Stewart is very clued into the fact that many gay men perceive her as a mother figure? It's a relationship worth exploring, and during my tight 15 minutes with Stewart I dove into the lifestyle maven's personal affiliations with many LGBTQ people: her nephew, Christopher Herbert, as well as her dearest gay friends, whom she hosts at her various homes. While “in a car, so any confusion, blame the cell service,” Stewart, 76, was reflective and laid-back as she served up a savory platter of gay talk: Her 82 | Hotspots.LGBT

age-appropriate philosophy on equality, gays who host Stewart at their gettogethers (she jokes, though she can't possibly be kidding, that it “ups their game”), and her memories of transforming, unforgettably and stunningly, into '40s film icon Veronica Lake for late, gay makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin.

I've really appreciated the inclusivity on VH1's “Martha & Snoop's Potluck Dinner Party,” with guests ranging from LGBTQ icons like Patti LaBelle and Kathy Griffin to gay TV personality Ross Mathews and also Laverne Cox. How aware are you of being LGBTQ inclusive when it comes to this show and also your career as a whole? Oh, thank you. Well, we're kind of in the showbiz world and being inclusive, that just sort of goes with the terrain. I don't care who the person is; I care about what the person does, and how they do it.

Martha Stewart Weddings magazine famously introduced same-sex couples into its pages in 2009, with Jeremy Hooper and Andrew Shulman sharing their vows with family and friends in Litchfield, Connecticut. Why was it important to be at the forefront of marriage equality in that way, and what did that moment mean to you?

I believe in “all men are created equal.” I think I go back to the 1860s, and before! (Laughs) And I don't think any compromise is necessary. I think it's absolutely a fact that all men are created equal, and so I just treated people like equals my entire life. Equals in every single way, no matter what their proclivity is or what their sexuality is, or their color or their race. It doesn't matter to me.

handle relatives. But I don't differentiate a gay wedding from a straight wedding. I just don't differentiate. I just went to Steven Gambrel's wedding. That was so beautiful! He's a very famous, very wealthy interior designer, and he married his longtime partner at their beautiful home in Sag Harbor, Long Island. It was an extraordinary evening.

That wedding issue was a big deal as it was one of the first mainstream wedding magazines to have featured a gay couple's wedding, and then there was another in 2011. I know! And that was my nephew. That was Christopher Herbert marrying a Native American man (Timothy Long).

Seeing as though gay marriage wasn't even recognized legally coast to coast then, were Martha-worshipping housewives open to displays of same-sex affection? It was legal in Massachusetts, where they actually got married. I went to their wedding. They had a pre-wedding in Massachusetts, which was the legal wedding, and then they had the family celebration at my farm, which was another tying of the knot. The ceremony and that Celtic tying of the knot was so beautiful.

Was that the best same-sex wedding you've been to? I'd say it's one of them – I've been to a lot! I mean, I have a lot of gay editors, both male and female. One of our style directors at Weddings got married and he had a fantastic wedding at a nightclub in Brooklyn. That was so fun, and that was also featured in the magazine. And I've been to several female weddings. You know, every wedding is special to me.

Is it intimidating for people to host Martha Stewart at their wedding? I don't know if it's intimidating, but I think it ups their game a little bit! (Laughs)

What do you look for at a samesex wedding? I like to see what the couple is wearing. I like to see how they Hotspots.LGBT | 83

The father of Steven's partner got up and said, “This is our family's first gay wedding,” and he said, “It's a momentous occasion for our family and we embrace it.” It was one of the nicest father speeches I've heard at a wedding. Everybody sort of wanted to cry because he was visibly uncomfortable and yet accepting at the same time. It was very moving.

You also attended out Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld's A-list tribute party in October.

Oh my god, that was a fantastic party! Mariah Carey singing! She sang a couple of songs for Karl dressed in a Chanel sequined dress that was, you know, perfectly clinging. It was beautiful, and Karl was so thrilled.

Growing up in New Jersey in the '40s and '50s, what was your introduction to the LGBTQ community? In my class, I knew that several of the boys were gay. It wasn't talked about, and nobody made fun of them. Nutley High School was a pretty liberal but also quiet school, so there were some gay boys that we knew, and I think one or two girls. But they hadn't come out, and the boys really were not out, if you want to use that word. But they were definitely gay.

Tipsy? If I get tipsy, it's probably because I haven't eaten anything. I don't get up saying, “Oh, I'm gonna get drunk today.” I just don't do that.

Is entertaining a group of sophisticated gay men the ultimate challenge? No. Again, I don't differentiate if I have a group of gay men (over). I just don't ever think that way. I don't differentiate. (Artbag business owner) Christopher Moore came to my house recently with four gay friends just to look at the gardens and I gave them cappuccinos and they were happy. I actually didn't have any food in the house, so I couldn't give them anything to eat, but they were perfectly happy. I just don't ever think that way. I don't differentiate.

Wait, let's back up, Martha. You didn't have any food in your house? Well, nothing except eggs. I could've made them scrambled eggs. I thought after, “I probably should have fed them something”... but I didn't. (Laughs)

Is it true that Cher was the one who convinced you to work with famous late, gay makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin when he photographed you as Veronica Lake for his 2000 book "Face Forward"? And then in our own family, I had one cousin who was gay who lives in Buffalo and then my nephew is gay, and I think even though he didn't come out until college, we all sort of knew he was gay. My daughter who has radar like crazy, Alexis, who I'm sure you know, she knows. And my mother didn't have a clue. It wasn't part of her lifestyle. She just didn't have those friends.

Snoop Dogg has said that you love to get him drunk. Do you have a gay friend who's especially good at getting “you” drunk?

I don't like getting drunk, so not necessarily.

84 | Hotspots.LGBT

No, I knew who Kevyn Aucoin was, and he was such an amazing makeup artist. And I like doing things like that. I have a face that can become other people. And I just thought, “Oh, god, what an opportunity.” He did such an amazing job.

In the gay community and beauty world, those photos are quite legendary.

Oh, I know who it was! It was the guy who worked for me (Alex Peruzzi). He's Linda Evangelista in the book – he was head of merchandising in my craft department. A very handsome boy.

How do you reflect on that shoot?

I didn't know that Kevyn was suffering from a pretty hideous disease, but I did remark on

the size of his hands. He had that disease that enlarged appendages. His hands, his feet, everything was oversized. And I couldn't believe that someone with such monster hands – these big hands – could do such delicate makeup work, but he did. He did amazing, amazing work. It was an art form of his to see a structure of a face and turn it into another face.

Looking back, have any gay people influenced your fondness for decadence or even your path to becoming a lifestyle icon?

No, not really. Although when I was catering (Stewart launched a catering business in the '70s) many of the young men who were my waiters were gay, and they still are. The gay community works a lot in the catering business in New York; they are either actors or artists and they need to make money, so they make money in catering. But they were all chosen on skill and aptitude for the kind

of job they were doing, and they were all great. But my daughter and I both have lots of gay friends. My closest friend is Kevin Sharkey and he's also like the surrogate uncle to Alexis (and her family) and he lives in their same building, and he's Tio Kevin to them. I even introduce him playfully to friends as my gay son.

I want to be Martha Stewart's gay son.

Lots of his friends would like to be Martha's gay son!

How does one achieve Martha Stewart “gay son” status? He's worked for (me for) 18 years, that's how! He worked his way up!

ost trainers, athletes, and fitness enthusiasts have been talking about the necessity of building core strength for some time. If you have a strong trunk or torso, which is considered your core, you will have increased over-all strength, better balance and improved flexibility. Solid core strength will come in handy for just about every sport, from mixed martial arts and swimming, to golf and tennis. A strong core begins with good posture. Stand up straight and tall – keep your shoulders back, don't slouch, pull your belly button into the spine and lower back. Now and then ask your partner, trainer or massage therapist to evaluate your posture honestly. Improving poor posture is like starting a new habit, it takes time and practice, but you'll catch on if you persevere. You should also

Just as maintaining good posture is vital for core strength, so is maintaining good form when you are stretching, doing cardio and especially when you're weight training. Review your form with each weight training exercise. Be careful not to rush, jerk or swing your weights. Significant core strength can be achieved simply by doing what you're already doing- maintaining good form when you're lifting weights. To focus on the core, start out simply by working out on a Swiss Ball. Exercising on an abdominals including your obliques (your sides), unstable surface can help develop strength and upper and lower back (deltoids and rhomboids), steadiness in several muscles of the core at hips (gluteals, hip flexors, psoas) outer and inner once. Florida's Broward County Passes Ordinance to Protect LGBTQ Youth From Conversion Therapy by Unanimous Vote

NCLR says, “Today's unanimous vote speaks to the power of survivor stories and the indisputable evidence that conversion therapy is not only ineffective—it devastates our young people and community” (FORT LAUDERDALE, January 9, 2018)—Today, by unanimous vote, Florida's Broward County voted to enact an ordinance to protect LGBTQ youth and prohibit the use of conversion therapy on minors. The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) submitted testimony to Broward County on the urgent need to stop harmful, dangerous conversion therapy and worked alongside Equality Florida and the Southern Poverty Law Center to push the ordinance forward. More municipalities in Florida have enacted ordinances prohibiting conversion therapy than in any other state. “Today's unanimous vote speaks to the power of survivor stories and the indisputable evidence that conversion therapy is not only ineffective—it devastates our young people and community,” said NCLR Youth Policy Counsel and Born Perfect Campaign Coordinator Carolyn Reyes. “NCLR is proud to have submitted testimony and worked hand in hand with Broward County, and NCLR's Born Perfect campaign will keep working with states and local communities across the country to ensure that LGBTQ youth are protected—no matter where they live.”

98 | Hotspots.LGBT

Broward County, Florida includes areas such as Fort Lauderdale, the Everglades, Hollywood, and Pompano Beach. The practice of so-called “conversion therapy” has been discredited by the American Psychological Association and every other major professional health organization as ineffective, unethical, and dangerous. Conversion therapy has been shown to lead to higher instances of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and even suicide. NCLR has been standing up on behalf of survivors of conversion therapy for the past 20 years. In 2014, NCLR launched its Born Perfect campaign, marking a commitment to a state-by-state advocacy campaign to end this practice across the country. NCLR has secured legislation protecting youth from these dangerous practices in California, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Oregon, Illinois, Vermont, Connecticut, Nevada, New Mexico, and Rhode Island—and numerous cities and counties across the country. The National Center for Lesbian Rights is a national legal organization committed to advancing the human and civil rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community through litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education. www.NCLRights.org

MIKE PENCE

G

od bless the people in Colorado who hung up rainbow Make America Gay Again banners outside of the home Vice President Mike Pence and his family were staying in while on vacation at the end of last month (last year, even!). Nobody deserves to be dragged for antiLGBTQ past, present, and future more than Pence. His actions as Indiana’s governor and in Congress are well documented, including signing a license to discriminate bill and supporting “reparative” therapy. But because Pence doesn’t Tweet deliriously in the middle of the night or rant incoherently before TV cameras, he’s largely been ignored by the media at large. With impeachment on so many 2018 wish lists, it’s important that we take a look at the man behind the dark curtain that is Trump’s presidency. Please note that I am not, as some have, arguing that impeaching Trump would leave us with Pence, therefore impeachment is a bad idea. Trump absolutely deserves to lose his job. He is a terrible failure and wholly unfit for office. But Pence, too, needs to go. Trump’s insane first year makes Pence seem almost harmless, but he is anything but. He supports all of the same polices and certainly would be nominating the same anti-LGBTQ judges to lifetime appointments. And that’s IF Trump is impeached. It’s a big “if.” Republicans control all of the federal government right now. They are not going to impeach their dear leader. In 2018 the country’s future depends on Democrats or, more importantly, voters choosing Democrats. Are Democrats perfect? Nope. Not even close. There are so many things that need to be addressed by the Democratic Party, many of them things that the party should have been working much harder on for decades now, like racism and social inequality. Some Democrats are shitty people who benefit from the status quo and don’t really have any interest in changing things. Those Democrats need to be primaried by people who stand for actual change. Voting for Democrats doesn’t mean accepting the party where it’s at. We must push Democrats to be better. Change is slow. To those of us who are marginalized, oppressed, and discriminated

BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI

against, change feels urgent and demands immediacy. Unfortunately, that’s not how change works. It is incremental. And I understand that people, including me, have a hard time with the whole “incremental” business. The Democrats are the party of the increment. The progress is slow, but the aim is forward. The Republicans often seem to move much faster than the Democrats (take, for example, the swift pace Trump has been appointing terrible rightwing judges). But the pace is an illusion. The Democrats seems to move slowly in comparison to the GOP only because it takes longer to build a house than it does to burn it to the ground. And our country is on fire right now. There’s this idea that our Republic with continue on no matter how we abuse it, but that’s wishful thinking. People who previously weren’t “into” politics are paying attention. We’ve seen thousands take to the streets over this past year to protest the Trump administration’s harmful and hateful policies. We need all of those people and more to vote. On New Year’s Eve, writer and civil rights activist Shaun King Tweeted, “I sincerely believe that 2018 will be a year of victories. I believe we will win many hard fought battles and will make more progress on other ones than any year in recent memory.” In other words, 2018 is going to be exhausting, but hopefully in the opposite way 2017 was.

H

ey Woody! I love getting f--ked by my boyfriend. After he c-mes inside me I lift my legs so high I practically do a headstand because I want his semen to flood my insides. It’s almost like taking sacrament. But I’m wondering what happens to the semen inside me. I know it seeps out but not all of it. What happens to the part that doesn’t? And is there any harm to having his semen inside my body? We’re both negative and monogamous.

y — Awash in a sea of white Dear Awash, Dude, can you say “obsessed?” Man, I can just see the bunnies boiling on his stove if he ever leaves you. Semen is the fluid that carries sperm. It will either travel farther into your rectum or trickle out and dry up. You know, like bar flies spilling out the door after last call. I hate to feed your obsession even more, but the semen that doesn’t seep out will carry sperm that’ll survive for three to five days. Yeah, you read it right. You can walk around knowing your boyfriend’s sperm is flopping around your insides for up to 5 days looking for an egg. I can hear the squish in your walk from here. As far as the semen that seeps out, it evaporates in the open air, killing the sperm with it. How long does sperm last outside the body? No one knows because it depends on the humidity, body temperature, consistency of the semen and what body part it lands on. But it isn’t very long. The macho gazpacho

turns out to be girlie-milk, crying out “I’m melting” as soon as it sees daylight.

Hey Woody! My parents are coming to visit and our guest bedroom is right next to ours. My boyfriend and I want to have sex while they’re here but I don’t want my momma to hear her son squealing like a wh-re. What can I do to make my bedroom a little more sound proof? — Thumper Dear Thumper: Here’s what an acoustic expert told me: First, seal your crack. Not with your boyfriend’s penis, with a weather-stripper. Then put a threshold seal along the bottom. The door’s, not yours. If you can see light through the cracks, sound will go through, too. Again, I’m talking about the door. Play songs like “Can’t get enough of your love, baby,” or “Your sweetness is my weakness.” Anything with Barry White will help muffle your ruffles. Low frequency noises like headboards banging against the wall can be camouflaged with strong bass sounds. If your mattress squeaks, Barry won’t help. Try Britney. The best thing for squeaky boxsprings is squeaky music. Next, buy a scrap piece of carpet and place it up against your door. Wait. Did I just say that? I’m turning straight! Still, heavy carpets and wall hangings are good for absorbing noise. And if all that fails, do it the old-fashioned way - turn on the shower. They’ll hear the water running through the pipes of the house, masking your pig-like squeals.
