Christine Ebersole Two-time Tony Award winner joins Broadway Concert Series at Broward Center
O
ne of Broadway's brightest stars will join The Broward Center's popular Broadway concert series hosted by Sirius/XM radio star Seth Rudetsky this season. The series, produced by Mark Cortale, presents Christine Ebersole, two-time Tony Award winner for “Grey Gardens” and “42nd Street” for one show only on Saturday, March 24 at 8p.m. Christine Ebersole starred most recently on Broadway in “War Paint” in her Tony nominated role as Elizabeth Arden, opposite fellow Tony nominee Patti LuPone as Helena Rubinstein. In addition to her acclaimed stage career, Christine Ebersole has also appeared in numerous hit films such as “Amadeus,” “Tootsie,” “Richie Rich,” “Black Sheep,” “Dead Again,” “Folks!,” “Ghost Dad,” “True Crime,” “My Girl 2,” “Mac and Me,” and “Confessions of a Shopaholic.” Her television credits include appearances on “Retired at 35,” “Royal Pains,” “Ugly Betty,” “Law and Order SVU,” “Boston Legal,” “Samantha Who,” “Will and Grace,” “The Nanny,” “Just Shoot Me,” “Murphy Brown,” “Ally McBeal,” “Valerie,” “Ryan's Hope,” “One Life to Live” and “The Colbert Report.” The format of the concert will be a seamless mix of intimate behind-thescenes stories prompted by Rudetsky's insightful, funny and revealing questions – and the music from the Christine's unique career. This is a spontaneous evening of show-stopping songs and hilarity not to be missed. It was a pleasure to sit down with Christine Ebersole just a couple weeks prior to her performance at the Parker Playhouse.

Were you always a performer, even as a child, or when did the bug bite you? I think I always was, but didn't know it. It wasn't in my conscious mind until I was 20 and decided I would pursue acting/entertainment as a career.
What was your first professional (paid) Singing and acting gig? The first professional singing job was at a bar, and my first paid acting job was on Broadway in a play called Angel Street.
What was your big break? I think I broke through when I got my first acting job on Broadway. I was a waitress at the time, and went back to waiting tables when that acting job ended, but it did open doors for me.
What has been your favorite role? Probably my part in Grey Gardens, the role was amazing. It was a part of a lifetime.
You have done so much in your career. Do you have a fantasy role? (a role you haven't played but want to). There are definitely certain things on my bucket list, but the great thing about this career is that these opportunities unfold. Even things that you don't think about. They always exceed my expectations.
In addition to Broadway you have done a lot of Movies and Television, do you prefer one over the
others and why? I always kind of like what I am doing at the time. However, being on stage is the actors medium, and where you have the most power.
Do you remember how it felt when you won your first Tony? And is it as exciting winning the second? They are always kind of daunting. I appreciate it so much, but it's not what you live for. I live for the roles. The Award shows are always very high stress. I don't think it was any more or less exciting the second time, but it was different.
How was it to work opposite Patti LuPone in War Paint? Fantastic!
Describe yourself in 3 words? Curious, determined, and grateful!
What should the South Florida Audiences expect from your show on Saturday, March 24? I think it's going to be an evening of great fun, great singing and lots of laughs.
What does the future hold for you? Endless possibilities.
Is there anything I didn't ask you that you would like to talk about? Yes, that I look forward to coming down to the beautiful state of Florida, and also look forward to seeing everyone there, and I think that everyone will enjoy this show!
“...it's going to be an evening of great fun, great singing and lots of laughs.

Anne Hathaway
By Romeo San Vicente
Cory Michael Smith Anne Hathaway “Wanted” by Dee Rees While director Dee Rees didn't get an Oscar nomination for her acclaimed film “Mudbound,” the movie nonetheless made a big splash, with cinematographer Rachel Morrison becoming the first woman nominated in that category and Mary J. Blige breaking records as the first performer to snag acting and songwriting nods in the same year. So what's next for the lesbian filmmaker behind “Pariah” and “Bessie?” An adaptation of Joan Didion's political thriller, “The Last Thing He Wanted,” with Anne Hathaway currently in negotiations for the lead. Presuming contracts are signed, she'll be playing a real-life Washington Post reporter covering the 1984 presidential elections who finds herself embroiled in the Iran arms-dealing conspiracy. The talented Rees's career is going great guns (sorry, pun) and it's a 44 | Hotspots.LGBT
pleasure to see queer women of color taking their share in Hollywood. Meanwhile, even during that weird try-hard backlash we were solidly Team Hathaway, so we'll be extremely happy if she takes this gig and keeps proving the naysayers wrong over and over again.
“1985” gets its shot Sometimes we report on the production of a little LGBT indie movie by an up-andcoming filmmaker and we just hope that it gets finished and makes its mark somewhere, anywhere. Well, last year when we reported on just such a film, “1985,” its director Yen Tan – a gay Malaysian-born filmmaker based in Texas – was mostly known for the lovely “Pit Stop,” a drama that made queer film fest rounds. But now “1985” has a slot at this year's South by Southwest, and that higher profile placement is great news for the film starring Cory Michael Smith (“Gotham”),
Virginia Madsen and Michael Chiklis. Smith stars as a young man living with AIDS who returns home to his estranged family, with all the complications that are now part of the all too familiar legacy of the time. After SXSW, look for this one in arthouses soon enough. With “Call Me By Your Name” already having returned to the early '80s to explore a love story on the cusp (and outside) of the AIDS crisis, the time is right for films that can contextualize the epidemic and its role in queer history during that harrowing decade.
Emily Dickinson: Girl Gone “Wild” If you saw Cynthia Nixon in 2017's “A Quiet Passion” you came to know American poet Emily Dickinson as a solitary woman devoted to her work and yearning for human connection that often eluded her. Well, there's a comedy flipside to this, and filmmaker Madeleine Olnek is going to shake up what you learned in
Cynthia Hudson
Isabelle Huppert Ira Sachs
high school English Lit with her take on the reclusive Dickinson in “Wild Nights with Emily.” Starring Molly Shannon (“SNL”) as Dickinson, supported by people like Amy Seimetz (“Alien: Covenant”), Brett Gelman (“Lemon”) and even former MTV VJ Kevin Seal, it's the story of E.D.'s more robust and overtly lesbian side, as well as her lifelong romantic relationship with a woman. Premiering at this year's South by Southwest Festival, look for it to take the stuffy air out of the official story. We will expect liberties to be taken with fact – it's from the director of “Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same,” after all. And frankly we don't care what's true and what's not. We're just here to party with Emily.
Isabelle Huppert takes a "Vacation" with Ira Sachs
Emily Dickinson
Acclaimed gay filmmaker Ira Sachs is on his way back into theaters after the success of “Love is Strange” and “Little Men,” and this time he's bringing Isabelle Huppert along. The much-lauded
French actress (“Elle”) will star in “A Family Vacation” alongside Greg Kinnear and Marisa Tomei, in a story written by Sachs and cowriter Mauricio Zacharias (who also co-wrote “Strange” and “Men”). It's about three generations of the same family on holiday in Portugal and a “lifechanging experience” they deal with while far away from home. That's all the detail we have right now, but it's no stretch or spoiler to say that Sachs has turned into an astute observer and
chronicler of the anxiety of living in sophisticated urban environments, as well as the ways in which people in those spaces strive and often fail to exercise their moral duties to one another. In other words, he makes serious and thoughtprovoking cinema about real people and we are here for it. This one's just getting started, so expect it sometime in 2019.

Roseanne Barr knows how to keep tongues wagging. From her infamous bungling of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and myway-or-the-highway tyranny on the set of her groundbreaking sitcom to her failed presidential bid and accusation that Ireland (yes, the whole darn country) is anti-Semitic, the self-proclaimed domestic goddess has been a controversial pop-culture mainstay for more than 30 years. This month, the legendary comedienne will return with her original TV family and friends to ABC's primetime lineup. How will she make us laugh, side-eye, and ask WTF next? Who knows, but here are six things I'd like to see the series tackle in season 10.
All the grown-up babies When we last left the Conners in 1997, Roseanne had baby Jerry Garcia, Jackie had baby Andy, and Darlene had just popped out baby Harris before the series finale. Baby Harris will be featured in the revival (now a teenager of 14 years old instead of the actual age of 21 she would be in real time) – as will her brother Mark and cousin Mary (Jayden Rey), daughter of D.J. Conner (Michael Fishman). As for Jerry Garcia and Andy, they're still part of the continuity, according to Roseanne, but the characters will not appear in season 10.

Gay Darlene
2
In the series finale of “Roseanne's” original run, it was revealed by newly widowed matriarch Roseanne that her daughter Darlene (Sara Gilbert) was married to her sister Becky's (Lecy Goranson) husband Mark (the late Glenn Quinn), not his brother David (Johnny Galecki), whom she had been with since season four. The latter storyline was explained as a fictional plot in a story that Roseanne had written about her life, which, as it turned out, encompassed the entire series. Nothing that we had watched over the past nine years was as it seemed. That fandisappointing decision will be retconned in the reboot, leaving everything leading up to season nine of the original series as canon. Praise Jesus. In the reboot, however, Darlene and David will be separated, opening up the potential opportunity for her to date women, which seems appropriate since Sara Gilbert is a lesbian in a real life. Just don't expect it to happen immediately since Darlene's 9-yearold gender-nonconforming son Mark (Ames McNamara) will be the basis for any initial LGBT diversity storylines. Not complaining, though; representation is representation.
Topical subject matter One of the greatest legacies of “Roseanne,” and why it was a top-20 show for eight of its nine seasons (No. 1 overall in 1989), is that it never shied away from controversial subject matter. From first periods and teenage masturbation to gay marriage and race relations, “Roseanne” blazed a trail across the television landscape, the effects of which can still be seen in sitcoms today. You can expect more of the same from the reboot – Roseanne the comedienne is still as feisty as ever – as they tackle the Trump administration (Roseanne the character admits she voted for the kook in an early episode), gender-identity issues, for-hire surrogacy, and mixed-race families. Throw an episode about gun control in there and we're halfway to an Emmy nom.

George Clooney cameo Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) was known for her revolving door of one-night stands and sometimes boyfriends – and a very tumultuous but short-lived marriage to her baby daddy Fred (Michael O'Keefe) – but none shared the kind of chemistry as first-season love interest, Booker, played by George Clooney. Of course, GC's a big-shot Hollywood movie star – so it's probably a long shot that he'll make a guest appearance. On the other hand, the Oscar-nominated Laurie Metcalf is a star in her own right, and “Friends” landed Brad Pitt and Julie Roberts in its heyday, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
5
The return of Kathy Bowman Roseanne and Dan Conner (John Goodman) dealt with their fair share of neighbors over the years – who could forget the elderly nudists? – but the most formidable was “needle-butt” Kathy Bowman (Meagen Fay), Roseanne's archnemesis from the minute she and her husband Jerry moved next door. It was a rivalry for the ages until Roseanne inadvertently helped burglars dressed as good Samaritans rob Kathy's house, which ultimately drove the snippy housewife back to her hometown of Chicago. Fay is still a fixture on television and if the network knows what's good for its loyal “Roseanne” lovers, she'll at least make a pit stop in Lanford one more time.
6
Dan's boat What ever happened to Dan's boat? Some “Roseanne”-aphiles consider it a casualty of the writers' room, just another abandoned plot point, while others seem to remember Dan's mentally ill mother setting it on fire. Whatever the truth is – which is hard to discern from a show like “Roseanne” – I hope it makes a comeback. If they can resurrect Dan from the dead (it was revealed he died of a heart attack in the series finale), surely they can put a half-completed boat back up on cinderblocks. “Roseanne” premieres at 8/7c on March 27 on ABC.

WILLIAM LIGON BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI
W
hile the nation has been grappling with the fact that we have too many guns, another thing we have too many of that gets less attention: children in the foster care system. Interestingly, the Republican plan for dealing with these two issues couldn’t be more different. When it comes to guns, they don’t want to ban anything. In fact, the more guns the merrier! Give every teacher a gun! Have armed guards roaming the streets! Everybody gets a tank! But when it comes to the hundreds of thousands of kids in the child welfare system, Republicans are all about banning potential parents. Specifically, LGBTQ parents. In fact, I would not be surprised if Republicans believed children would be better off with an AR15 as a parent than with two dads. The bill, called the Keep Faith in Adoption and Foster Care Act was sponsored by Georgia Sen. William Ligon who claims, “The goal is to open as many doors as possible for those children that are in need of homes, and this bill will do that.” And how does limiting the number of families an agency will work with increase the number of homes available? Well, it doesn’t. But Ligon believes that this bill would result in religious adoption agencies flocking to Georgia where they can be anti-gay in peace. Or anti-single parent. Or anti-Muslim. Or anti-whatever they want so long as they say Jesus is the reason for the season. In other words, if two women want to adopt a child, this law would allow agencies to say, “Nope, Jesus thinks little Johnny would be better off without a family at all than with you. Now get out of our office before our Virgin Mary statue starts bleeding from her eyes.” “Just because you are a faith-based organization, doesn’t mean you have to check your faith at the door and cannot participate in government programs,” Ligon told WRAL.com. But, funny story, actually it does. If you are “faith-based” you don’t pay taxes. And if you don’t pay taxes then, yeah, I think it’s okay if you’re
excluded from tax-payer funded area of civic life, especially if you want a license to discriminate. It’s important to note that Georgia isn’t the first or the only state to try to do this. Michigan, for example, is currently being sued by the ACLU over a similar law that Gov. Rick Snyder signed in 2015. The Georgia bill is getting a lot of attention, which is nice to see considering how the news cycle is so frantic that it’s hard for anything to gain much traction these days. Chelsea Clinton Tweeted about the bill, “Because what we clearly need right now is ... less love? Fewer loving parents?” To which some Twitter users probably screamed at her, “YOUR MOM LOST THE ELECTION SHUT UP AND GO KNIT A MAGA HAT!” because Twitter is full of monsters. People in the film industry, which does a lot of business in Georgia, also took notice. Showrunner Ben Wexler Tweeted, “To my fellow showrunners: if this dumb bill becomes law, let’s be done filming television shows in Georgia.” It really does seem like economic pressure is the only thing Republicans understand (see: North Carolina’s bathroom bill fallout). So if this bill passes, you could boycott Georgia. Or you could work like hell to help get the GOP out of office there. And in Michigan. And everywhere.

“O
h, did I print that?” Jake Shears is in a state of surprised perplexity, wondering if a version of his new (and very moving) memoir, “Boys Keep Swinging,” landed in the hands of journalists, such as myself, with what he calls the “weird epilogue.” After all, Shears (born Jason Sellards) thought he stripped that throwaway entry – quite literally, as “I had them rip that page out from the ones that hadn't been sent out already when I found out about that” – but those not-to-be-published pages still made the rounds.
Scissor Sisters frontman on going solo, aging and the day Davie Bowie died By Chris Azzopardi In addition to reflecting on the process of reaching into tucked away corners of his life for the two-years-in-the-making memoir, the flash-forward epilogue explains his lengthy break from the Scissor Sisters, which Shears formed with Scott “Babydaddy” Hoffman in 2001, just days after Sept. 11. He writes, “I didn't have much to say anymore through that particular filter.” Calling from New York, where he's starring as Charlie Price in Broadway's “Kinky Boots,” it's clear in conversation that even if you didn't know Shears studied fiction writing at the New School in New York City and went

on to adapt Armistead Maupin's “Tales of the City” into a stage musical, you'd catch on to his writerly conscience quickly. He cycles through his thoughts carefully, acknowledging his tendency to get lost in thought – “here I'm not talking in complete sentences” – or prefacing his explanation of the Trump era's judgy, joy-shaming rhetoric with, “I'm not gonna be eloquent saying this, I don't think.” A love letter to the band of misfits he met living in Seattle and New York responsible for his queer coming of age, a journey that transformed his youth as a suppressed, bullied Christian outcast into a flagrantly gay, go-go dancing, glam-rock superstar, the wonderful “Boys Keep Swinging” is an unflinching account of sexuality in bloom, imbued with Shears' colorful record of his most formative years. Musically, he's found his creative mojo again, releasing last year's '70s-inspired groove “Creep City,” a prelude to his upcoming summer solo debut. “I feel like through the kind of lens of Scissor Sisters, I wasn't particularly inspired at the moment to make more music that goes through that filter,” he tells me, elaborating on the nixed epilogue. “I really wanted that filter to just be me, and I'm definitely in a place where I am very comfortable and happy to call the shots.”
Bookseller even existed until you mentioned it.
It was weird to have my own mom read it! She read it in a day, and I was really beside myself when I finally gave it to her, but I had her primed for it for a couple of years while I was writing it, so she was ready for it. She's actually been super supportive and loved it.
As gay people in their 30s, it's sometimes easy to forget the emotional turmoil and personal struggle we went through to be comfortable with ourselves. Did reflecting on your own sexual adversity give you a greater appreciation for who you've become – this unabashedly gay role model?
My mom is a fan of yours, and we've been to a Scissor Sisters show together. She wants to read your book, and I want her to, but I'm worried she'll ask me a lot of questions about the gay community's deep, dark secrets – like, what are International Male catalogues?
Considering she wasn't accepting of you after you came out to her, that's a pretty evolved woman.
Yeah, my mom's amazing. I couldn't have a better mom.
Reading it, I don't think I expected to find parts of myself in your life story. But some of my earliest memories have been jolted and brought back to life because of you sharing your own. I forgot B. Dalton

I had no expectations as to what people were going to think or respond to, or whether people would identify with it. It's funny: (Musician) Sam Sparro, a really great friend of mine in Los Angeles and one of the first people I gave (the book) to when I got the uncorrected proofs, that's what he said. He was just like, “I feel like this is my own story in so many ways.” The day I turned this book in was devastating to me. I was really very unhappy. Basically, it had to be ripped out of my hands. (Laughs)
Why was letting the book go so difficult for you?
It'd been such a part of my life for a couple of years. I don't know if I would call it a crutch, but it was definitely this obsession once I had started editing it. I was editing it until the last hour. When I turned in the final – the very last edits – I was so unhappy! I feel a lot better about it now. (Laughs)
When your friend, novelist Rakesh Satyal, suggested you write the book, did you immediately know where to start?
For a while, the book had started where the New York section starts. That was the beginning of the book, and I was going for quite a while. I really wasn't planning on writing that whole first third (about my youth), and then I hit this point when I was writing well into what is now the second section where I was like, I'm not gonna be able to go any further without actually starting from the beginning. So, I went back. That whole first third I ended up going back and writing.
I don't really think of myself like that, but the thing I did underestimate, though, is, I'm a pretty resilient person. Going back and writing some of the more painful stuff, I feel like I kind of underestimated its effect on me, just in general in my everyday life. I would finish a week and feel terrible and realize I had been sort of reliving some hard
stuff, and I didn't really consider that when I was getting into it and didn't really know that was happening at the time. It's strange. I feel like there are 30 different books that I could've written.
Did you tap into any other queer memoirists for advice or insight? The Carrie Brownstein book (“Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl”) came along exactly when I needed it. It really resonated with me, and it was very influential. Over the summer I met up with (gay author of “The Hours”) Michael Cunningham, and I've had a couple of great talks with him about this thing and have gotten a lot of support from him. It's hard to give the book to somebody when it's not finished. It's just strange. You've
When you found out about his passing how did that affect you? It was so strange because I'd been pounding “Black Star” all weekend and just absolutely loving it, and then I had told my friend Laura it was great and she needed to listen to it. And so, it was Sunday night and I was hanging out with this guy, this friend of a friend, and we were just having a drink and he didn't know any Bowie stuff, so I was like, “I'll play you some good Bowie tunes.” And I was playing Bowie and I got an instant message from my friend Laura that just said, “David Bowie,” with a frowny face. I was so confused. I wrote back and then she gave me the news. It was just a really strange moment because I was playing his music when I found out he died. It was a very weird night. This person that I didn't really know ended up just being with me all night. I was wrecked. I woke up the next morning and was going through a lot of stuff at that time in my life, and I was actually overjoyed in the following weeks to see the outpouring of love for him. All the parties and all the memories and just everyone's enthusiasm and love for him was so wonderful, and my darkest time was just that night, and I've been celebrating him ever since.
Considering Bowie's influence on you as an artist, did his death have you contemplating your own legacy as an artist? gotta pick the right people to give it to before it's done. I had lunch with Elton (John) a couple of weeks ago, and I was excited for him to read it because he plays a prominent part in the last third of the book. He read it in a day and wrote me this email, and he was so happy and loved it. That was really sweet.
In addition to Elton, you write a lot about your childhood idol, David Bowie, in the book. You didn't actually meet Bowie, right? No, he just came to a show and I found out about it after I got off stage. I was heartbroken. It was the scariest. Just a really freaky moment for me.

Oh, I don't know. I don't even really think about it. (Laughs) I do feel like I'm into probably chapter three. The next 10 years are gonna be another thing for me. The album is coming out this summer, and it's an album that I'm so beyond proud of and that I love so much and that I'm so excited to put out. You're gonna dig it. I've never been prouder of something so much, as a whole.
Your photos, including the single cover for “Creep City,” have crossed over from twink to daddy, at least according to the gay men who comment on your Instagram photos. I know! (The daddy name) just started a few years ago and I'm like, “Well, I guess we're here now.” I turn 40 in October and have a
great life and feel as sexy now as ever, if not sexier. I don't mind going into my 40s. I'm really excited about the next 10 years, and then the next 10 years after that. It was weirder finishing up my 20s and going into my 30s, but now I'm very happy about my age and aging.
Regarding the Scissor Sisters, can you give me an example of something you had to compromise on that you no longer have to as a solo artist? This whole record is about a time and a place in my life, and it's definitely me writing about a very specific place that I was at when I wrote it. There's no way I could've made this record without everybody being like, “Why do we all have to perform songs about you?” (Laughs)
music to like, I think that's a really great thing. I just really can't stand the rhetoric happening from everybody – or from a lot of people – at the moment.
What rhetoric are you referring to? I just think there's so much judgment coming from all sides with social media. It's just one big pile of judgment on everybody and everything. I just think everybody's got room to grow, and I think that should be encouraged.
You go through a lot of personal growth in the book. Had you known what you know now about life, what would you tell your younger self? I would try to bolster my own confidence that my own instincts at the time were correct. There's nothing I would go back and
Will it reflect the political turmoil that a lot of Trumpera art has? In an inverted way. I personally think the world needs more joy at the moment. There needs to be joyful music, and I think sometimes we forget that in hard times. Sometimes we can forget to have fun, and I think right now there are a lot of hands on the hips and frowning upon having fun, and I just don't subscribe to that. Being in “Kinky Boots” has been the perfect show for me because it really sums up my philosophy with the music that I make. It's been a really nice fit in that way, and the magic of being in that show is getting to see all the people come from all over the world that have never seen anything like that. As a New Yorker, we take a lot of stuff for granted. Urban sophisticates take a lot for granted, and here's a show about being yourself, and in a very loud and proud way. Seeing the various people come to the show who have never seen anything like it before is a really beautiful thing. I do think that it opens and changes people's minds. I make music for everybody, and I really don't care who you are or what you believe. If somebody who has a different belief system than I do finds something in my
tell myself to do differently because I don't really have any regrets or anything – OK, I mean, of course we all have regrets. But I just took my own path, and I would tell myself, at 18, 19 years old, “You're headed in the right direction. Don't second guess.” It's so crazy how much more self-doubt I have now as a 40-year-old man sometimes than I did then. Just writing this book and looking at me being 21 years old, I'm like, “Oh my god, I probably should've had a little more fear than I did!”
