Season 10

VANESSA VANJIE MATEO |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

S

by Scott Holland

eason 10 (can you believe drag has been on TV for 10 years…you go Ru Paul Charles!) of Ru Paul's Drag Race started out with 14 queens, and Ru greeted them and told them that the mini challenge would be “Work the Runway,” and they had to do it in front of some of Ru Paul's favorite past contestants. Monét X Change won the challenge and received a $2000 gift card from Fiercequeenheels.com. The first Maxi challenge was “Drag on a Dime” where they had to use items from the 99 cent store to create a million dollar look. For you Drag race diehard fans you will remember that this was the first challenge from season 1. In the end the top looks were Blair, Mayhem, Miss Cracker and Yuhua, with Mayhem winning the challenge. The

bottom looks were Kalorie, Dusty and Vanessa, with Dusty being safe leaving Vanessa and Kalorie to Lip Sync for their lives. Kalorie killed the lip sync and it was Vanessa who was sent sashaying away.

Q: At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name? I got interested when season 1 came out when I was in middle school. I got my name from 3 places: Alexis, my first time getting in drag, and from the Little Mermaid. Q: How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul's Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you got chosen? I only applied once. I was excited and felt like I was destined to be on the show. I knew it was for me. Q: Is there additional pressure now that RuPaul has been on for 9 seasons and 3 all-star seasons? In addition, was there extra pressure for you being that Alexis (your mom) did so well in season 3? Yeah of course, because I wanted to do as well as she did. I knew that I wanted to make top three or I wasn't going to be happy.

single! I'm looking for someone who's loyal. That's the main quality I'm attracting to, and it's something that's really rare these days for some reason.

Q: Who do you want to win and why? I'm rooting for my top three friends, who are Mayhem, Eureka and Asia. I'm very close to all three of them.

Q: Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you. I don't know! I'm an open book‌ probably that I'm a Libra. Nobody knows that! Q: What's ahead for Vanessa? Lots of music. I'm planning to release a track before the end of the season. I have my merch on my website (vanessaVanjie.com), I'm doing a tour, and I'm going to take over social media! For more information on Vanessa follow her on social media: Facebook.com/VanessaVanjieMateo or on Instagram.com/VanessaVanjie

Q: Tell us about your RuPaul's Drag Race experience? It was amazing, and even though I was gone first, it lit a fire under my ass to work really hard. It was short and sweet. Q: What's your marital status? If single, what are you looking for in a man? I am definitely

• You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you think you were exposed to HIV-1 or have a flu-like illness while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. • If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. • See the “How to Further Reduce Your Risk” section for more information. w

TRUVADA may cause serious side effects, including: • Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. TRUVADA is not approved to treat HBV. If you have HBV, your HBV may suddenly get worse if you stop taking TRUVADA. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to check your health regularly for several months.

ABOUT TRUVADA FOR PrEP TRUVADA for PrEP is a prescription medicine used together with safer sex practices to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This use is only for HIV-negative adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1. • To help determine your risk of getting HIV-1, talk openly with your healthcare provider about your sexual health.

Do NOT take TRUVADA for PrEP if you: • Already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. • Take certain medicines to treat hepatitis B infection.

HOW TO TAKE TRUVADA FOR PrEP • Take 1 tablet once a day, every day, not just when you think you have been exposed to HIV-1. • Do not miss any doses. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. • Use TRUVADA for PrEP together with condoms and safer sex practices.

• Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months. You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF TRUVADA FOR PrEP TRUVADA can cause serious side effects, including: • Those in the “Most Important Information About TRUVADA for PrEP" section. • New or worse kidney problems, including kidney failure. • Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat.

• Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain. • Bone problems. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP include stomach-area (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. These are not all the possible side effects of TRUVADA. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any new symptoms while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Your healthcare provider will need to do tests to monitor your health before and during treatment with TRUVADA for PrEP.

BEFORE TAKING TRUVADA FOR PrEP Tell your healthcare provider if you: • Have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis. • Have any other medical conditions. • Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. • Are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. If you become HIV-positive, HIV can pass to the baby in breast milk.

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take: • Keep a list that includes all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements, and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist. • Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist about medicines that should not be taken with TRUVADA for PrEP.

HOW TO FURTHER REDUCE YOUR RISK • Know your HIV status and the HIV status of your partners. • Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV to infect you.

• Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior, such as having fewer sex partners. • Do not share needles or personal items that can have blood or body fluids on them.

GET MORE INFORMATION • This is only a brief summary of important information about TRUVADA for PrEP. Talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist to learn more, including how to prevent HIV infection.

• Go to start.truvada.com or call 1-800-GILEAD-5 • If you need help paying for your medicine, visit start.truvada.com for program information.

Adam Collier’s Work TO BE DISPLAYED IN APRIL Join ArtsUnited for their April Artist Mixer featuring Adam Collier Noel on Thursday, April 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bona Italian Restaurant, 2468 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors. Noel is an award-winning photography-based mixed media artist. His work relies heavily on the appropriation of vintage imagery and their relationship to the contemporary world through the lens of popular culture. His artwork will be displayed throughout the month of April. Portions of the art sales go to support ArtsUnited. Become a member of ArtsUnited during the event and get 20% off membership. There will also be silent auction items at the event. It was a pleasure to sit down with Adam for this Hotspots exclusive interview.

focus is on portraits of men from a bygone era who ultimately reflect personal and universal narratives. There is a history, sincerity and energy captured in these discarded memories that I want to celebrate.

As a young man I always had my 35mm Canon camera documenting friends and family, but over time I became more interested in vintage photographs taken by other people and began combing thrift stores and antique malls for found images I could incorporate into my artwork. My collection of original vintage snapshots is now the subject matter for my mixedmedia creations

My artwork could be described as photographybased, mixed-media collage with an edge. I like the work to be a little messy. I want viewers to see the energy I put into the pieces, so I don’t want them to be too pristine

When did you realize that Photography/Art would be your career?

I always knew making art would be my career and have exhibited and sold my work with galleries in Provincetown, Indianapolis, Calgary and South Florida and during Art Week Miami.

Who are your mentors in photography and why?

All working artists are my mentors. I love meeting creative people who are navigating the art world and making it work for them. I read blogs, watch how-to videos, and find anything that inspires me to be a better artist. Being an artist is all about evolution and involvement in community.

At what age did you pick up your first camera and tell us about that experience? Describe your photographic style?

Did you have any formal training in photography?

I have a Bachelor of fine arts degree in photography and have explored a variety of mediums including sculpture, installation and painting. Currently my work is focused on fusing collage with photography using paper ephemera and photographic transfers of vintage snapshots as the subject matter. In particular, my

What does the future hold for you?

Looking forward I know I will continue my work as a studio artist in tandem with a career in the arts. I’ve always worked in galleries and photography studios and equally love art consultation, curation and working with other artists. It is a passion that only gets stronger.

The key to creating a kitchen or bath that wows clients and sells product is to design around the way people really use their space. “It’s about how they live,” says Sarah Fishburne, manager of innovation and design at The Home Depot. Fishburne offers this list of suggestions and considerations for the aspiring “lifestyle designer”

IN THE KITCHEN

Bakers and gourmet chefs have differing needs. For one thing, they want different types of stoves. The baker doesn’t care so much about the range but wants an upgraded oven. The baker also needs a pop-up mixing stand for the heavy-duty mixer. On 44 | Hotspots.LGBT

the other hand, the chef wants a wok, a griddle or a slow-simmer burner for cooking specialty dishes. Choosing the right appliances gives the kitchen a custom look. As people move toward healthier lifestyles, steamers are becoming more popular. New ideas include convection ovens and induction cooktops, and they’re coming down in price, which makes them accessible to a wider market. Refrigeration has gone vertical. Twenty-fourinch refrigerators and freezers allow much more design flexibility—they can be placed where they’re needed. And they’re moderate on energy use. If a homeowner entertains a lot and has multiple serving platters and dinner plates that are larger than the standard 12 inches, customize a space for them. Older cabinets just don’t have the width to accommodate them. You can go light in terms of add-ons, or you can go to the extreme. Raising and lowering countertop heights can provide optimal access for kids

and for adults who require different levels for maximum comfort. For those limited to small changes, keep the cabinets and change out the countertops. Use different finishes on the island and the perimeter. For a baker, try marble in one area and quartz surfacing everywhere else.

IN THE BATH At the extreme end of luxury, couples are carving out his-and-her bath suites that include dual vanities. His might be in a darker wood tone, while hers is lighter and more feminine. Many new and remodeled master baths include fully tiled walls and floors, often outfitted with infloor radiant heat. This additional amenity can be programmed to turn on and off at certain times of the day, minimizing the amount of energy required. Some homeowners prefer showers, and the new power assemblies feature multiple showerheads. These can be grouped in a tower or arranged on the walls and ceiling. Some require upgraded plumbing. Soaking tubs, some with water-overflow features, create the ultimate indulgence. Today’s soakers are better-designed and have more features, including air jets, aromatherapy and chromatherapy. And in most cases, people are really using them. Little changes can make a big difference. Use more ambient lighting, or add towel warmers. Both

THE BODYGUARD |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Comes to the Arsht Center | Starring Deborah Cox By Scott Holland

T

he Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and Broadway Across America are delighted to announce that the irst U.S. national tour of the hit musical The Bodyguard will play at the Center's Zi Ballet Opera House from April 3 to 8. Grammy Award-nominated and multiplatinum R&B/pop recording artist and ilm/TV actress Deborah Cox** stars as Rachel Marron. In the role of bodyguard Frank Farmer is television star Judson Mills. Based on Lawrence Kasdan's 1992 Oscarnominated Warner Bros. ilm and adapted by Academy Award winner (Birdman) Alexander Dinelaris, The Bodyguard had its world premiere on December 5, 2012 at London's Adelphi Theatre. The Bodyguard was nominated for four Laurence Olivier Awards including Best New Musical and Best Set Design and won Best New Musical at the Whatsonstage Awards. Former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. Each expects to

be in charge; what they don't expect is to fall in love. A romantic thriller, The Bodyguard features a host of irresistible classics including So Emotional, One Moment in Time, Saving All My Love, Run to You, I Have Nothing, I Wanna Dance with Somebody and one of the biggest-selling songs of all time – I Will Always Love You. Rounding out the principal cast are Alex Corrado (Gotham, Hannibal) as Tony Scibelli, Rachel's personal security guard; Charles Gray (Broadway: The Color Purple, Tour: The Lion King) as manager Bill Devaney; Jonathan Hadley (Broadway: Jersey Boys, A Class Act) as publicist Sy Spector; Jorge Paniagua (Regional: The Full Monty, Oregon Shakespeare Festival) as the Stalker; Jasmin Richardson (Tour: Memphis, Dreamgirls) as Rachel's sister Nicki Marron, Mark McCollough Thomas (NYC: Consent, Godforsaken) as FBI agent Ray Court, and Kevelin B. Jones III (Idlewild Music Festival) and Sebastian Maynard-Palmer (Tour: Kinky Boots) alternating in the role of Rachel's son Fletcher. It was a pleasure to sit down with Deborah

this come about and tell us about the experience? I was literally in between albums and had just given birth to my son. The producers were looking for a new AIDA and I just went for it, and got cast. It rekindled my love for Musical Theater which I had done prior to my albums. How did you get cast in the Bodyguard? The creative team approached me about doing the show years ago. They wanted me to consider doing the us national tour. I fell in love with the script because it stayed true to the story.

Cox for this Hotspots exclusive Interview:

Were you always a performer even as a child or when did it start? It started when I was 11 doing dierent talent shows and other things, and then I went to a performing arts high school.

What was your irst professional/paid gig? It was my irst commercial, and it was for Marvelous Muf ins. I was paid $50.

When did you know singing/performing would be your career? Probably when I was in high school. I was the one that was always tired in irst period as I had a gig the night before. It was somewhere around 17.

You have collaborated with many artists. Do you have a favorite and why? My favorite is the duet I did with Whitney Houston. The reason for that is I felt like everything came full circle for me as an artist. Growing up I looked up to and admired her so much!

You have received many awards for your eorts in the ight for human rights. What made you decide to use your fame for this cause and has this been rewarding for you? It's been really rewarding as it came out of purely organic situations. I had lost a few friends from AIDS, and I had other gay and lesbian friends who were shamed and kicked out of their family's homes. This made me want to speak up on human rights issues, and I have never stopped!

What should the South Florida audiences expect from the touring company of the Bodyguard? They should expect to come and have a good time. It's a suspenseful thriller, a romance and has amazing choreography and a great cast of actors that bring the story to life. I think people will be pleasantly surprised on how entertaining it is.

BETSY DEVOS BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI

O

n Twitter the thing I probably write most often is “Betsy DeVos is a monster” in reply to stories about her. One of the worst things a person can do is to hurt children. And DeVos hurts children like it’s her job. Because it is. Or, rather, that’s what she’s chosen to do as the Secretary of Education under Donald Trump. After the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, I couldn’t help but notice how totally absent DeVos was. Especially since the students there became household names fighting for gun control and refusing to accept that they were acceptable collateral damage in this country’s obsession with guns. True, DeVos did visit the school, but the students said she basically “pet a dog and left,” in reference to the therapy dogs that had been brought to campus to help the grieving students and faculty return to school. To most people, the idea of guns in school is completely insane. The vast majority of Americans are like, “GTFO with that.” But not DeVos. “[Teachers having guns in the classroom] should be an option for states and communities to consider,” she told Lesley Stahl during a 60 Minutes interview. But for those who are — who are capable, this is one solution that can and should be considered. But no one size fits all. Every state and every community is going to address this issue in a different way.” To which DeVos sadly did not add, “And since anyone who supports such a thing has no business having anything to do with schools, I hereby resign on national TV.” When Stahl asked DeVos what she’s actually DOING about gun violence, DeVos said she’s going to “head up a task force,” which corporate speak for, “Nothing.” Stahl asked DeVos what accomplishments she’s most proud of as Ed Secretary, and DeVos said, “We’ve begun looking at and rolling back a

lot of the overreach of the federal government in education.” And while “overreach” sounds bad, the things DeVos has been working to roll back include the Obama administration’s guidance for restroom use by transgender students. DeVos also wanted to remind Obama guidance on “discriminatory discipline,” which is the problem of great disparities in the severity and frequency of discipline dished out to white and black students. When Stahl asked if this was an example of institutional racism, Devos basically shrugged it off. She’s also revamped the Title IX guidelines for handling college sexual assault. As CBS News puts it, “She’s allowing colleges to require stronger evidence from accusers, and give the accused a greater benefit of the doubt.” Imagine that, a Trump Administration official who thinks that sexual assault victims have it too easy when it comes to reporting their assaults. Stahl asked DeVos why people hate her so much. “I’m more misunderstood than anything,” she replied. Huh. If she thinks she’s misunderstood, imagine how being a transgender student who needs to use the bathroom feels. Did I mention that DeVos is a monster?
