o you remember My Big Gay Italian Wedding? The 2003 play that shared an off-Broadway theater with Naked Boys Singing? The one that was revived in 2010 and starred The Amazing Race’s Reichen Lehmkuhl (remember huh?) and, eventually, a rotating cast of Real Housewives, then soap stars, then drag queens? You do? Well, fugheddaboutit! We’re here to talk about the new film, which is a completely different animal. My Big Gay Italian Wedding is the Americanmarket name given to an Italian romantic comedy originally titled Puoi Baciare Lo Sposo (You May Kiss the Groom). The film is in Italian (with English subtitles), so naturally the action opens in… Berlin, where we meet Antonio (Cristiano Caccamo), a handsome, twenty-something Italian actor. And we feel like we really are meeting Antonio since the opening scene is shot POV-style as Antonio, in voiceover, reminisces about his future boyfriend sweetly hitting on him at a

café. The montage continues as Antonio recalls their first date (and kiss); visits to the beach, the market, and a park with friends; waking up in bed together; having a heated argument in, and outside of, a car; blowing out the candles on a birthday cake; and sampling red sauce from a wooden spoon. All the while, we view the couple’s romance and life together through the eyes of Antonio’s lover. By the time the camera finally spins around, almost three minutes into the film, and we finally meet Antonio’s adorable “Neapolitan oaf,” the bearish bartender Paolo (Salvatore Esposito), in the kitchen of the Berlin apartment they share, the love between the two has been well established. Which is good, since Antonio has just popped the question. Paolo is an enthusiastic yes. But he wants to meet Antonio’s parents before the wedding. Conveniently, Antonio is leaving the next day to visit his parents in Italy for Easter. Inconveniently, he has yet to come out to his family. And perhaps his reluctance is justified: Paolo’s

LET’S TALK SEATING CHARTS Fiancés Antonio (Cristiano Caccamo) and Paolo (Salvatore Esposito) sandwiched between Antonio’s mama (Monica Guerritore) and real-life reality-TV wedding planner Enzo Miccio

Antonio hails from Civita di Bagnoregio, a tiny town tucked inside the walls of a rocky fortress perched high on a volcanic outcropping in the Tiber River valley. His father, Roberto (Diego Abatantuono, a tan version of Orson Welles in those late ’70s ads for Paul Masson wine), is Civita’s mayor and is not pleased when Antonio announces that he and Paolo love each other and are getting married. His mother, Anna (Monica Guerritore, a nononsense Italian Annette Bening), tells the couple she is happy for them. But Mama also has a few conditions that must be met if the prospective grooms want her blessing: They’ve got to hire (real-life) reality-TV wedding

planner Enzo Miccio; Paolo’s mother must attend; the ceremony will be held in Civita; and… Roberto must officiate. And you thought coming out was going to be the only challenge Antonio would face on the way to a happy ending! No, in the space of a single speech at breakfast, Mama manages to unload an entre arsenal of plot complications into the second act. Just add one stalkerish ex-girlfriend, and away we go! The ensuing hijinks, including a detour to Naples, an oracular goat, and a spare mother at the wedding, are charming and good fun. Occasionally, the farce falls flat (a brief, unlikely plot twist involving Benedetta and Donato comes to mind). And the story, by director Alessandro Genovesi, would have benefited from the addition of a little exposition — and redemption! — between the story’s surprisingly villainous nadir and it’s Mamma Mia!-esque finale. But the production design is lush; the cinematography, vibrant; the performances, strong; and the characters surprisingly relatable. It’s no wonder My Big Gay Italian Wedding’s a hit in Italy: Released last month, the film racked up $2.2 million in ticket sales in its first two weeks alone. Next stop? South Florida, for its international premiere. Or you can catch it in theaters later this year. THE WEDDING PARTY My Big Gay Italian Wedding opens the 20th Miami edition of the OUTshine Film Festival on Friday, April 20. The screening — the Italian film’s international premiere — includes a swell after-party (Tito’s Vodka open bar and nibbly bits, ladies!), both held at the Scottish Rite Temple (471 NW 3rd St, Miami). Advance tix ($55 members/$65 guests): outshinefilm.com.

q

mother, in Naples, hasn’t spoken to her son since he came out to her three years prior. After some resistance, Antonio agrees to let Paolo join him for the family holiday. Also along for the ride is Benedetta (Diana Del Bufalo), the couple’s mildly wacky chestnut-haired roommate — and landlord — also Italian. Benedetta has money: “I’m rich, and I don’t need to work.” She enjoys shopping and, apparently, company because, despite her wealth, when we meet Bene, she’s interviewing a prospective flatmate she found online. Donato (Dino Abbrescia) is a white-haired, mustachioed bus driver (readers of a certain age may find Donato’s overall look very Captain Kangaroo), who’s left Italy because he needs time to sort things out after his wife and daughter caught him crossdressing. Although Donato is flying solo, he doesn’t want to be left alone in the Berlin apartment, so he persuades Antonio to let him join the roommates on their Italian odyssey.

OUTshine’s Miami festival runs from April 2029. (Its Fort Lauderdale edition returns in October.) Pick up a copy of Hotspots next week for full coverage of the jam-packed Miami slate of events and screenings. Hotspots.LGBT | 9

Presenting a thrilling, percussive dance and music spectacle, the company's work celebrates the unique South American cowboy tradition of the gaucho. Danced solely by men, the Malambo began in the 17th century as competitive duels that tested the skills of agility, strength, and dexterity. in New York City, and the show opens on April 23. Summer's signature style is on full display on The Original Hits in such iconic tracks as the forever-seductive “Love To Love You Baby,” the defiantly declarative “Bad Girls,” the MTV-era female-empowerment anthem “She Works Hard For The Money,” the fiery dance/rock mesh of “Hot Stuff,” and the urgent ballad-to-crescendo disco blend of “Last Dance.” Summer's influential work is given a fresh, but respectful update with two rare remixes by renowned Grammy-nominated remix producer Ralphi Rosario: “MacArthur Park (Rosabel's Radio Mix),” a No. 1 Dance hit in 2013, and “Hot Stuff,” a

new rework in collaboration with Erick Ibiza, that debuts on this collection. Another rarity on the album is the German-language rendition of “White Boys” that Summer recorded while in the German cast of Hair. Even though Summer sadly passed away in 2012, her cultural impact and sonic legacy carries ever onward; she garnered a welldeserved posthumous induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. pisode 3 of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 started with Ru telling the girls that the Mini Challenge would be a screen test for a provocative new RuPaul chocolate bar campaign. They then had 20 mins to get into quick drag and sell it to the camera. The winners were Blair, Monet and Monique, who then became the captains for the Maxi Challenge, which was to market a new and emerging app. The apps were: End of Days (Blair), Fibstr (Monique) and Madame Buttrface (Monet). They had to use their acting and writing skills to come up with a commercial for the app. The runway look was “Feather. Although they competed as teams, they were judged individually, and the

top 3 were Blair, Eureka and Asia, with Asia taking the win (and snatching a $2,000 Casper gift card and a $3,000 Catherine D'lish gift card). The bottom two were Mayhem and Yuhua, with Yuhua sashaying away.

Q: At what age did drag become an interest, and how did you pick your name? I used to be scared of drag queens. My Asian culture taught me that drag queens were mentally ill. When I finally experienced drag, I fell in love with it. The name Yuhua is my given name, and I really admire the Japanese singer Ayumi Hamasaki, so I took her last name.

Q: How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul's Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you had been chosen? I auditioned three times, and it felt amazing when I was chosen, as thousands of girls try out to be on the show. Q: Is there additional pressure now that RuPaul's Drag Race has been on for nine seasons plus three season of All Stars? Yes, because every year the competition gets stronger and tougher. You always want to do

better than the girls before you.

Q: Tell us about your Drag Race experience? It was a lot of hard work, but I am very grateful for the opportunity. It's been very rewarding.

Q: What's your marital status? If single, what are you looking for in a man? I am very single, and I am looking for someone funny and that I can relate to.

Q: Who do you want to win and why? I want a New York City girl to win, as they are my sisters. Then the crown will stay in NYC. Q: Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you. I am not a real woman either.

Q: What's ahead for Yuhua? Prostitution, since I lost RuPaul's Drag Race - and the $100,000. Also, please buy my single,. “The Ankh Song on iTunes. For more on Yuhua Hamasaki, follow her at Instagram.com/yuhuahamasaki

DANCE – CHE MALAMBO

This explosive all-male Argentinian dance company pounds the stage with percussive moves that blend precision steps, stomping, drumming and song that evolved from competitive duels among South American cowboys. WAITRESS

B

By Scott Holland

to play at the Broward Center of the Performing Arts

roadway in Fort Lauderdale is thrilled to announce Waitress will play The Broward Center for the Performing Arts for a limited, two-week engagement April 11–22. Brought to life by a groundbreaking, allfemale creative team, this irresistible new hit features original music and lyrics by six-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles (“Brave,” “Love Song”), a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam), choreography by Lorin Latarro (Les Dangereuse Liasons, Waiting For Godot) and direction

by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (Hair, Pippin, Finding Neverland). Inspired by Adrienne Shellys beloved film, Waitress tells the story of Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker, who dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the towns new doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life. The Tony-nominated musical Waitress,

has cast two young area actresses to take on the role of “Lulu” during the Fort Lauderdale engagement: Autumn Rae Sanchez, 4, of Miami, and Quinn Eden Titcomb, 5, of Fort Lauderdale will alternate the role of “Lulu,” the daughter of the production’s main character, Jenna. Both girls were chosen via an audition process held at the Broward Center on March 6. More than 50 girls participated in the auditions, which were presided over by a member of the Waitress Company. The character of “Lulu” is cast locally in each tour market and two girls are chosen to share the role. Each five-year-old girl chosen will perform in four performances during the engagement. “It’s an empowering musical of the highest order!” raves the Chicago Tribune. “Waitress is a little slice of heaven!” says Entertainment Weekly and “a monumental contribution to Broadway!” according to Marie Claire. Don’t miss this uplifting musical celebrating friendship, motherhood, and the magic of a well-made pie. It was a pleasure to sit down with Desi Oakley, who play’s Jenna, for this exclusive Hotspots interview.

or baked a pie?

I have never waitressed, so it’s new for me. As soon as I won this role, my mom flew to New York and taught me how to bake a pie, my grandmother’s cherry pie. I really enjoy baking, but my forte is cookies.

Other than this show, what has been your favorite role?

I did a lot of understudying, so I played a lot of iconic roles: Evita, Elphaba, Fantine etc. They are all so amazing, it’s hard to choose but I am a Disney girl at heart, so I have to say Ariel in The Little Mermaid, because she changes the audience’s life.

What is your dream role?

I want to play Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie. I love that role and the character. I am dying to play her.

Were you always a performer, even as a child, or when did it start?

Yes, I’ve been performing since I was 8 years old. It was more of an extracurricular activity. It didn’t become a care in my mind until I was in high school.

What was your first professional/paid gig?

I’ve been paid professionally since I was 14. I was an ensemble member of an Equity house [a theater that only hires members of Actors Equity Association, the stage actors union] called Music Theatre of Wichita. That theater gave me my Equity card.

When did you know singing and performing would be your career?

When I was 16, I was cast at my first lead, and that’s when I saw the doors starting to open. I realized I could really make a career out of performing-me, a girl out of Kansas.

How did you get cast in Waitress?

I’ve been with my agent since I moved to New York seven years ago, and they provided me with the opportunity to audition for many shows. I’ve been lucky enough to have steady work since then, and they got me the audition for Waitress.

Of course, I have to ask: Have you ever waitressed and/

What should our readers expect from the touring company of Waitress?

This production is so special, I feel there’s something in it for everyone. The story surprises people: While it is lighthearted and fun, it also makes audiences introspective. It touches them because it’s so real! It’s a very human story, a piece of theater the world needs to hear and witness right now. And there’s pie! So, what else could you ask for?

For more on Desi: Desioakley.com or go to her Instagram page: desioakley. Tickets for Waitress, which start at $40.25, are available at the Broward Center AutoNation Box Office, (201 SW Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale), on the website: browardcenter.org or by calling 954462-0222. Toni ton Brax

Smokin' and Unltered

Dropping a hot new album, Sex & Cigarettes, Toni Braxton dishes about her debut 25 years ago, nitpicky concert riders, and the diva duets that might've been.

W

hen you have seven Grammys and an iconic voice that can drop to ocean depths, it's your God-given right to also have a no-wings-in-mydressing-room policy. This is Toni Braxton in 2018, still decrying the existence of pungent food in her midst before a concert. But sex? Cigars? Alkaline water? Unbreak Ms. Braxton's heart with any of the above. While talking up her irst solo album in eight years, Sex & Cigarettes, the 50-year-old R&B diva was in tell-all mode, whether the topic of discussion was the current generation's outspoken female artists, the Mariah and Janet duets that might've been (thanks a lot, bankruptcy and babies!), or the secret — hint: nose job — behind hitting those famous notes.

That album cover, Toni. You're on ire. Thank you. I feel good about it. You know, I was hungry while I was doing that. That was a little hard. But I love the album cover. I thought [photographer and director] Randee St Nicholas's choice of lighting was really superb.

By Chris Azzopardi

How would you describe your mood there? It's self-explanatory with that title: I'm feeling like sex and cigarettes. I feel sexy, like I need a puff afterwards.

You puff? I smoke cigars once or twice a year. Every year for my birthday I do, and sometimes around the holidays. Smoking is not my friend, with lupus and all, but you have to have a vice or two. A nice stogie, something I can chew. Something really hardy.

You're known for the deep end of your range, so a few puffs can't hurt. My voice is naturally smoky. But when I do the cigars, it's for my birthday, and I try not to work on my birthday. If I do [work], after my show I do a little puff-puff. Not a puff-puff-pass!

Some commenters on social media aren't keen on what you're wearing on the album cover. One wrote, “We as older women have to set an example for younger women.” Oh, that's cute. It doesn't really bother me. I

It's OK for people to have their opinion. I have my opinion, too, on things that I probably shouldn't. But I would never post it.

think if you look good, you can wear it. Any age. For me, personally, I don't wear midriffs. I think I'm too old to wear midriffs. To each his own. It's just me, my body shape, I'm sure. But I work hard on my body — not just because I'm older, because I like to be in great health. And it's OK for people to have their opinion. I have my opinion, too, on things that I probably shouldn't. But I would never post it.

Can you talk about the pressure on you and other women to dress and look a certain way? Have those industry expectations changed with age? Gosh, you know, I feel forever 25. It's kind of weird. Parts of me are 25. Probably. [Laughs.] I feel good about myself. In this industry, I would be disappointed if women [tried to tell other women how to dress]. I mean, guys don't know, but women — we should embrace each other. I look at Madonna; she's still doing it, and Madonna's almost 60. Who cares? Or look at me, Janet [Jackson] or Halle Berry. We're all in the same group. So, I think it's all about how you feel about yourself. I like that now people look younger than their age. I think that people today really see people; they're thinking [about] age less and aren't thinking numbers. Numbers, to me, just determine how long you've been on the Earth. But

I'm OK with it. The women's movement, to me, is great. I'm excited about that part.

Yeah? I'm really excited about that because my generation in the '90s, when I peaked, when my career was at its height, we were taught to be a little aloof. You had to be mysterious. The younger generation, which I love, they're my favorite because they speak as loud as they want. They're like, “We will not be missed.” Rihanna, she's my favorite. I just love that about the new generation. It's just nice to live your life out loud.

How are the #MeToo stories resonating with you? I think it's good, I think it's about time. It doesn't only affect women, though. I mean, I've heard guys who've been in situations where they can say “me too,” but guys feel like they can't say it. I like that people are [now] able to speak out about things that have happened to them, like, “We're not having it anymore.” But as a woman, I'm proud of my species.

Hotspots.LGBT | 69

Do you have a #MeToo story? I don't have a #MeToo story, thank goodness. I have close friends who have stories. Most of them have chosen not to talk about it because they have kids, and they're like, “It's behind me, but it happened to me too.” But I'm very lucky that I don't have any stories like that.

Going back to the elusiveness of '90s artists: Did that stop you from being yourself? Early on I was allowed to be myself and express myself through fashion. I always kind of pushed the envelope on my sexuality. I think it's de initely different rules for women, compared to rules

Sometimes I forget to be a girl; I forget to keep it feminine. But my boys remind me to be a girl, to be fabulous about it.

for guys. And we had to ride the wave a little bit, the women of our generation; if we said anything, we were being a bitch. Of course now it's just a term of endearment: “That bitch is hot.” And even now the word “diva” is coming back in style, and it's OK to be a diva. It's a great moment to be a girl. Are you a diva? Oh, all of us are sometimes, absolutely.

What are you most diva-ish about? I am very, very particular about my [set up] when I go on stage. I don't like having to adjust my mic when I start performing. I think it's tacky. Instead of starting off singing, you gotta adjust your mic because they think you're 5′6″. I'm 5′1″ and three-fourths. You would think my people would know that, but sometimes they forget.

That doesn't seem like too much to ask. It's not like you're requesting a speci ic brand of water. Well, I'm particular about that, too, sometimes. As long as it's high alkaline, [I'm OK], but I think the world is about that water now. But they know that, so they get it. I don't really have this big rider [I attach to my contract for a performance]. I don't have anything like that. But I don't like food in my [dressing] room. Do not have food in my room! I do not want to go on stage smelling like food.

About Sex & Cigarettes: I hear a lot of people have different takes on the title of your song “Deadwood,” and are asking you, “Toni, why is the wood dead?” Why do I have a hunch these people might be your gay friends? [Laughs.] Yes, they are.

That is true. That's kind of the '90s — when it was still coming off the '80s. It was a bit more pookie then.

Do you have a gay posse you have to consult before you release new music? It's more about my look. My boys usually get my look together for me. I have height envy: I like a particular type of shoe so I can be taller. And they'll go, “We have to ind something [else] that will give you height because those platforms are out. Stop wearing those.” But I wanna be 5′6″. I try to keep it taller and keep current. But they say: “You gotta be ahead of the season, Toni. You can't do that. We should do this look. OK, we'll let you [wear] that little thing because that's kind of indicative of who you are as an artist, so we'll give you that one dated thing.” They keep me up with the times.

Tell me more. They were asking me that! But it's just an appropriate title! I know what deadwood is; I lived in Maryland. And being in the suburbs, as kids, you would see the wood and kick it. “Don't bring that deadwood in the house.” So, for me, it makes sense and it's something you just disregard and throw away. You didn't care about it. But a lot of people were asking me, “Why the wood dead?” And I guess they've got a point.

You told me once that your gay boys make you a better girl. It's so true. Sometimes I forget to be a girl; I forget to keep it feminine. But my boys remind me to be a girl, to be fabulous about it: “Why are you standing like that? Why are you standing with your shoulders down?” The little things. They just remind me to be a girl. I love it. The cover of your debut album, with your short hair, denim and that leather jacket, wasn't exactly your most femme moment.

72 | Hotspots.LGBT

I don't like food in my dressing room. Do not have food in my room! I do not want to go on stage smelling like food.

What was the last really dated thing you couldn't live without? I wear sweatsuits with high-heeled shoes all the time. You'll never catch me in a sweatsuit without a high-heeled shoe. I'll never wear sneakers unless I'm going to the gym.

2018 marks your 25th year in the music business; your irst album was released in 1993. I was a little gay boy when I bought it on cassette tape. You did not say cassette tape. That's taking me back.

What don't people know about the making of your debut? Well, it was just before I got my nose job. Might be too much information, but yeah: We hadn't inished the album, so I was singing with a fresh nose job, which [was] virtually impossible because it hurt so bad. I don't know how they do nose jobs now; I think they do it from the inside. Well, [mine] was from the inside too, but you had to wear this little thing on it, and after they took it off, it was so sore. You can't hardly move the skin between your nose and lips, and I remember it was really dif icult to sing.

Did it become easier to hit the high notes or the low notes after the nose job? The high notes got easier. I had rhinoplasty, but I also had sinus surgery. I know, everybody says that! But it's really true. Mine was a nose job, but I lucked out, and my doctor ixed my sinuses as well. I didn't go in there for my sinuses — no. I went in to get my nose ixed, and they also ixed my sinuses. So, I'm telling the truth. Truth: I went in for a nose job. OK, pumpkin?

Why did we get a Whitney and Mariah duet and never a Mariah and Toni duet? You know, Mariah reached out to me about doing a duet, but unfortunately, it was just before the bankruptcy was gonna happen [Braxton iled for bankruptcy in 1998, and again in 2010], but no one in the world knew. So when she asked me about doing a song together, immediately I wanted to say yes, but I couldn't because of what was about to unfold.

Why aren't you calling her right now? I'm gonna have to do that. There was talk of me and Janet doing a song together, but she was pregnant. But, hey, maybe me and Mariah. We were neighbors for a second, so I probably should've reached out to her then, but it's never too late. You're actually gonna spark me to maybe talk to her about doing a remix or something. That's actually a really good idea. What advice would “Sex & Cigarettes” Toni have for the Toni of 25 years ago? “Sex and Cigarettes” Toni would tell the Toni of 25 years ago to have more sex and smoke more cigars and have fun. And don't be afraid to be a bitch.

What else? The jeans [on the cover] were really too big for me, and they were pretty much cabled in the back. That was a true story. So many little tidbits I could tell.

DONALD TRUMP BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI

H

undreds of thousands of people took to the streets on March 24 to protest the despicable fact that the U.S. allows its children to be gunned down at school on the regular. Emma Gonzales, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School senior dismissed by a Republican candidate for the Maine House of Representatives, as a “skinhead lesbian,” gave a powerful speech at the March for Our Lives in Washington D.C., and countless others marched all over the country, and the world. Donald Trump heard them loud and clear. He did what any leader would do in this time of national crisis: He responded to this clarion call with (drumroll, please) a ban on transgender troops! What? Did you think he was going to ban guns? Yes, our coward in chief, a man who has never served in the military, has once again told trans troops to GTFO. You may recall Trump already tried this and was sued. So, while that first executive order is still being fought in court, he decided that a second try at a trans troop ban was needed to distract from the nation’s schoolchildren refusing to be used for target practice. The new ban is basically a blanket ban on trans troops. Ever been diagnosed with gender dysphoria? You’re out. Gone through any kind of gender transition? You’re out. Only transgenders who stay in the closet will be allowed to serve — as their biological sex dictates. According to James Mattis — still Secretary of Defense at the time of this writing — trans troops “undermine readiness, disrupt unit cohesion and impose an unreasonable burden on the military.” Which is some bullshit. Trump has whined in the past about the “tremendous medical costs” associated with trans troops. I wonder if he’s considered the tremendous medical costs that would stem from sending troops into war with North Korea or Iran, as he seems eager to do. Probably not. Let’s

Our coward in chief, a man who has never served in the military, has once again told trans troops to GTFO” face it: Trump doesn’t see transgender people as, well, people. He sees them as extras on an episode of some surgical reality show on TLC. There’s this idea on the right that if the U.S. allows transgender people in the military, crowds of Americans will stampede recruiting stations to get “free” gender affirmation surgery. Which is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. First, service members don’t get anything for free. They offer to make the ultimate sacrifice: their lives. And while we Americans talk a good game about taking care of our troops, we don’t actually do a great job of it: Just try Googling “homeless veterans.” So if someone is willing to serve, the least we can give them is the healthcare they need. Call your representatives and tell them you stand with trans troops. And then call the White House and ask Trump how is bone spurs are doing.
