CIRQUE DU SOLEIL
OUR LIVES UP ON THE BIG SCREEN OUTshine Film Fest is back with its 20th Miami edition.
Film lovers, rejoice! In most places in the U.S., you'd be lucky to have even one local LGBT ilm festival. But here in South Florida, we've got two. A few years ago, the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival merged with the Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, and last year the two fests were rechristened as OUTshine. But while the organizations merged, the events themselves did not. OUTshine Film Festival produces two major cinematic events every year: a Miami festival each spring, and one in Fort Lauderdale in the fall. Perhaps at OUTshine's Fort Lauderdale edition last October you caught the biopics Tom of Finland or Battle of the Sexes (with Emma Stone as Billie Jean King, and Steve Carell); or the critically acclaimed French paean to the ACT UP years, 120 Beats Per Minute; or one (or both) of the sexy coming-out-and-coming-of-age features Beach Rats and God's Own Country. Then, no doubt, you focused your attention on the Oscar race from November until the Gay Super Bowl (the Academy Awards broadcast) last month. Well, now it's April, and Hollywood is taking its l-o-n-g, annual break from awards-caliber ilms, so your local cineplex is featuring The Rock battling giant mutant alligators with the help of giant mutant apes (or is it the other way around?), that bomb of a Tomb Raider re-boot (Don't worry, we still love you, Alicia Vikander!), and Paci ic Rim-jobs. Well, OUTshine's got your back, ciné astes! Its 20th Miami edition is here this week and next to entertain you, touch you, challenge you, give you a refresher course in LGBT history, and provide the perfect date-night activity for that new crush you want to impress.

You can bone up on all the important festival details below. Then check out our Hotspots Hot Picks to help you select a ilm — or two or three. Episode 4 of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 started out with a mini challenge where Ru had the girls get into 15-minute quick drag, and then they had to perfect the art of the celebrity photo bomb, by inserting themselves into famous photos while Ru worked the camera. Aquaria won the challenge (and a $1,000 credit to Postmates). Afterwards, Ru informed the girls that she had bad news and good news. The bad news was that climate change was real, and the good news was that she was throwing a ball, “The Last Ball on Earth. For the event, the queens had to create three looks. The categories were: Alaskan Winter Realness, Miami Summer Realness, and Martian Eleganza Extravaganza. Some of the looks blew me away and
in the end the Top 3 were Cameron, Aquaria and Miss Cracker, with Aquaria winning a $2,000 gift card to d bleu dazzled and a wig wardrobe from Rock Star Wigs. The Bottom two were Monet and Dusty, with Dusty Sashaying away. Q: At what age did drag become an interest, and how did you pick your name? I moved to New York City to become an actor. That didn't go the way I wanted it to, and I was waiting tables. Four years passed, and I had the need to create. I met Bob and Thorgy, and that's when drag became an interest. They did some of the coolest things I have ever seen. My nickname as a boy was Dusty Ray, and there was this boy who called me a bottom, so he would call me Dusty Ray Bottoms. When I started drag, I took that as my name. Q. How did the dots come about? The dots came about because my brows were really crazy and did not match my face. A friend suggested I put dots on my face and then draw my brows out by connecting the dots. I drew dots but decided not to connect them, and they started taking over my face in different forms. Q: How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul's Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you had been chosen? I applied twice: for season 8, and then I skipped a year and got chosen for Season 10. For every step of the process, it was so surreal. I couldn't believe it was happening. I felt so lucky.
Q: Is there additional pressure now that RuPaul's Drag Race has been on for nine seasons plus three seasons of All Stars? Absolutely. I feel like the bar is raised every year. And, of course, drag itself is evolving. I felt a lot of pressure to do my community proud-and do myself proud.
Q: Tell us about your Drag Race experience? It was great! I did well on the challenges, but had one mishap that caused me to be eliminated. I made some really good friends. I feel very blessed
Q: What's your marital status? If single, what are you looking for in a man? I have a fiancĂŠ, and we are going to get married soon. He is everything to me.
Q: Who do you want to win and why? I couldn't pick just one person: I need a top 5, because this cast is so brilliant. I love all the girls. Q: Tell us something people would be surprised to learn about you. I'm handy with a tool belt. I can build you a house, fix a tire, etc.
Q: What's ahead for Dusty? I just came out with a single and a music video for “Neva Lavd Yah! It's a summer anthem. There's more music to come from me, so keep an eye out for it. The end goal is to open queer places across the country, so LGBTQ people can have a safe place to create and be artistic.
Q. Is there anything I didn't ask you that you would like to talk about? Yes, I urge everyone to go to TheTrevorProject.org, sign up for their newsletter, and donate money. Together we can end conversion therapy.

9 local real-estate stars answer The Big Question about the South Florida market — and try to sell us on listing or buying with them. If you want good advice, you go to the pros. So, for this year's edition of Hotspots' annual Real Estate Issue, we went straight to the experts, the hard-working brokers who write up the listings, host the open houses, take no prisoners at the bargaining table, and close the sales. We asked a selection of local agents to tell us two things: 1) whether South Florida real estate is still a good investment, and 2) why you should consider listing or buying with them. So, pull up a chair for this South Florida real-estate masterclass. (Broker responses are listed in the order in which they were received.)

Valuations have doubled since 2011. You can't randomly pick a home and win. But there are three ways to end up smelling like D&G and not Old Spice. First, be patient. You're buying for the long haul. Own for 10 years, and you should make out all right. And don't refinance! Second, find a home needing some improvements. Finally, focus on neighborhoods that are relatively undervalued. Ideally, seek to do all three.
Why should someone choose you as their realtor? I'm uniquely positioned to help with all these. My proprietary research has identified locations that are both undervalued and have ample nearby amenities — thus ideal for longer-term ownership. And although certain improvements add more value to a property than their cost, the magnitude of improvement varies greatly by neighborhood. My fact-based analyses offer clients better protection than any “rule of thumb” could.

With that combination, South Florida is the perfect place for an investor to feel confident that his investment will show a return.

Is South Florida still a good place to invest in real estate? South Florida has always been a strong region for a real-estate investment. Whether the market is flat, downward or on an upward trajectory, here in South Florida we are always selling properties. Our real-estate market is unique: We attract many different buyers from all over the country and worldwide. We get buyers for a primary residence or a second home as well as investors.
Why should someone choose you as their realtor? [My business partner] Henri Vezie has been selling real estate here since 1999, and I have since 2005. With that experience, we have a long list of clients that includes investors who are always interested in buying real estate in South Florida. We recently sold a condominium to an investor from New York who plans to remodel and rent as an income source. Given our location as coastline communities — Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Pompano Beach, Hollywood, Miami Beach — there are always people who want to come here and fulfill their dream of living by the sea. Our homestead exemption [on taxes] and [the lack of] state income tax also attract buyers to our region. Our job market is strong, and the jobless rate falls below national levels. Is South Florida still a good place to invest in real estate? South Florida has in the past and will continue to attract vacationers, snowbirds and residents who wish to relocate full time. Our climate of sunshine and economic growth will always [make South Florida] a great place to invest in property.
Why should someone choose you as their realtor? As a fulltime realtor in Broward County for the last 25 years, I have seen two major cycles of sales and the rebound of values. We always bounce back. I've had the pleasure to work with new clients, past clients and their friends and family. I offer my full dedication and commitment to my clients to help them buy or sell their homes — asking myself, “How would I want my realtor to conduct business?” — and that turns clients into customers for life.

There’s No Business Like Show Business Staging a home can be the secret to a faster — and more lucrative — sale
A
staged home is a sold home. That’s what I always say. Now, I may be a little biased since I am in the business: My company, Florida Stage Hands, currently has 15 homes staged across South Florida. But I’m not the only one who sees the value in staging a property. The National Association of Realtors estimates that for every $100 invested in staging, the potential return is $400. Why does staging make a difference? Well, most buyers can’t visualize what an empty space could or should be, and “virtual staging” can often leave buyers disoriented when they actually come to see a property. I like to think of staging as “Show time!” It provides an opportunity to show a property to its best advantage, highlighting positives and minimizing negatives. It can also entice a buyer by giving them a taste of what it might be like to live in a particular home. We have four different designers, with styles from traditional to very contemporary, who are expert at creating a vision of what life in a property for sale could be like. They must be doing something right because the average listing time for one of our staged homes is just 47 days — and it’s not unusual for a home buyer to purchase all the furniture and accessories in one of

By Robert Geary MacKilligan our projects! Now, it’s not every buyer that can shop like that. And not every seller can afford to hire a professional staging company. But every seller can do a few things around a property to speed the sale and boost the sale price. Here are some of my go-to staging tips.
Curb Appeal
They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Whether the property you’re staging is a condo or a single-family home, a few potted plants will add a pop of color by the door and say “welcome.” Speaking of that door, when’s the last time you took a good look at yours? If the finish is beat, consider painting it or sanding and re-staining. Is the hardware worn out, rusty, or dated? Swap it out for something new. Same thing goes for your mailbox: If it’s dented, damaged, or looks worn out, consider a replacement.

Whether or not you have an actual foyer, make the entryway a focal point. A console table topped with a vase of fresh flowers will delight both the eye and the nose (I like lilies, both for their glamour and fragrance). An arrangement of colorful glassware in different shapes and sizes is also great on a console or shelf. Got a cramped entryway? Expand the space with a tall, framed mirror propped against the wall. Living Room Declutter, declutter, declutter! And that goes for the whole house. A fresh coat of paint will get you the most bang for your buck. Then add a few pieces of unique art. Thrift stores and discount department stores can be good sources. We love Home Goods! Dining Room If your dining table is wood, polish it up. For glass or chrome, just keep it spotless. Add table settings and a colorful centerpiece to showcase your home as a place to entertain.
Kitchen Everybody knows kitchens and bathrooms can make or break a sale. If a kitchen remodel is not in the cards (or budget!), change out dated cabinet knobs and pulls. Paint the walls, backsplash, or ceiling with a natural color that will complement the cabinets. Decluttering is again key: Limit countertops to just one or two nice-looking appliances. Bathrooms Think: boutique-hotel bathroom. Think: spa. First, hide all your personal lotions and potions. Nobody wants to see that. Paint the walls a color that enhances the bathroom tile, and put out towels that match the color

scheme. If the caulk around the tub or shower is dirty or damaged, consider recaulking. Swap out dated vanity hardware. If you have a large bathroom with plenty of counter space? Splurge on some candles and potpourri.
Master Bedroom Paint the entire room, with maybe a pop of color to just one wall. Spring for a new comforter set for the bed. Clean out that closet, and make it look like a true walk-in (if it is one). Donate or consign any clothes or accessories you haven’t used in the last year. Consign your things, and they might even help cover some of your staging expenses!
The Grounds Keep your yard as neat and tidy as the house now is. If you’re too busy to stay on top of things yourself, hire someone to help out while your property is on the market. If you have the budget, add some special color to the landscaping. If you’re not handy in all the skills we’ve covered (landscaping, painting, etc.), ask the broker listing your home to recommend help. Remember, your home is probably one of the largest investments you’ll make in your lifetime. As you prefer to sell that valuable asset, make sure you have the right professionals working to maximize your return.

THE WALK
How far: 5K (that’s 3.1 miles for you silly, metric-phobic Americans). Starting line: SoundScape Park (500 17th St., Miami Beach). Finish line: Also… SoundScape Park. in between: Enjoy an invigorating
Sunday sashay through the scenic streets of South Beach with thousands of friends. And exes. And, if you’re lucky, future exes. The look: Out, loud and proud. Sexy? Yes! Slutty? Not us. No, never! (Don’t you dare listen to what our shady, jealous friends say!) Sensible shoes are a must, as is sunblock (or, perhaps, an umbrella or poncho, ’cause the Walk goes on rain or shine, ladies!). Stay hydrated! Plenty of water will be available both in SoundScape Park and along the Walk route. Hotspots, a longtime sponsor of the event, is donating all that water, and we’ll be right there along the route to cheer you on and make sure everybody is moist as can be.
THE POST-WALK CELEBRATION

across the finish line. We’re waiting.
On the mic: The Notorious MC Danny G

L-I-V-E “live,” not Mariah New Year’s “live”) by recording artists Daniel Patrick Ellis and Jane Catt.
Self-care time! Complimentary
massages from Educating Hands School of Massage, HIV testing, free wellness screenings, carnival games, giveaways, pet adoptions, and dozens of booths with information about medical and support resources.
HOW YOU CAN HELP

And now, a word from Grand Marshal Jorge Bernal, host of Telemundo’s “Suelta La Sopa”:
“Advances in treatment and new prevention strategies have now made “Getting to Zero” — zero new infections, zero deaths, zero stigma — an achievable goal! Please join me and thousands of others who are committed to getting to zero by participating in AIDS Walk Miami.” Hotspots.LGBT | 65

“A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN” GETS A SHOW OF ITS OWN Remember that scene in A League of Their Own where Rosie O'Donnell talks about feeling different from the other women, and how that was pretty much all the lesbian coding the script was willing to give to Rosie O'Donnell in a movie about women's baseball? The movie was much like Fried Green Tomatoes in that it was entirely about lesbians except not willing to be about them at all, yet still somehow iconic and queer in retrospect. Isn't it time, then, for a reboot that allows its sporty gals not just a chance to play ball but also, perhaps, a shot at kissing the not-male player (or fan) of their fondest dreams? Yes, it is, and thanks to Broad City's Abbi Jacobson and Mozart in The Jungle producer Will Graham, it's happening. Amazon is going to host the sitcom, which will not be a remake of the film, or even necessarily include its 70 | Hotspots.LGBT

characters, but will follow the league as they travel the country hitting triples for feminism. And, no, we don't have any inside information about how much lesbian content there'll be, it's just that we know, y'know? Because, please, have you seen Broad City?
BEN PLATT WILL “RUN THIS TOWN” Everybody wants to be in the Ben Platt business these days. That's understandable, of course, the natural outcome of the Tony Awardwinning actor making hundreds of theatergoers weep on the daily during his run in Broadway's Dear Evan Hansen. Next up for the young, queer song-anddance man is a drama called Run This Town from firsttime director Ricky Tollman, who's also the screenwriter. It's about a journalist (Platt) who stumbles onto the scandal-filled trail of an obnoxious politician. Damien Lewis (Homeland) is the
wicked lawmaker, and Vampire Diaries' Nina Dobrev and Mena Massoud, the star of Disney's live-action Aladdin, have signed on to play political operatives. Obviously, it would be better if there were musical numbers — wouldn't everything in life? — but we're happy Mr. Platt's star keeps rising. And it's a timely project, considering the record number of horrible politicians walking around Washington, D.C. these days. Now, if only art had the power to run them all out of office....
A SITCOM FROM STEVEN SODERBERGH AND GREGG ARAKI?! Veteran queer filmmaker Gregg Araki (Mysterious Skin) and Steven Soderbergh (Unsane) might not be the first names to come to mind when the word “sitcom” pops up, but don't be so quick to think a comedy collab can't work. Soderbergh will produce Araki's latest project for Starz, a half-hour comedy
GREGG ARAKI
called Now, Apocalypse, and if you think about Araki joints like Nowhere and the pitch-black comedy of his early films such as The Living End, you can probably see where this could go. The show will focus on a young person with the mythically resonant name Ulysses, and his journey, alongside a cast of fellow travelers, will involve the search for love, sex and fame in the coolest corners of Los Angeles. To keep it youthful, Araki is cowriting with Vogue.com sex columnist Karley Sciortino, who also hosts Viceland's kink-intensive sex series, Slutever. Considering that a recent episode of that show involved people who fantasized about doing it with werewolves and that Araki's own delirious cult film Nowhere involved lots of sex — as well as encounters with cockroachlike monsters — this is probably going to be a pretty trippy apocalypse.
ALIA SHAWKAT and HOLLIDAY GRAINGER
ALIA SHAWKAT AND HOLLIDAY GRAINGER: PARTY “ANIMALS” We follow Alia Shawkat's film and TV projects because she never bores us. The Arrested Development star makes the kind of career moves we applaud and admire, whether it's the nervy cult comedy Search
Party or the acclaimed series Transparent. So we have every intention of following her to Animals, the latest film from director Sophie Hyde. Hyde's earlier project, 52 Tuesdays, was about a teenage girl with a gender-transitioning parent, which won acclaim at a variety of film festivals. Animals is based on British author Emma Jane Unsworth's well-received novel of the same name (Unsworth will also do the screen adaptation) and will star Shawkat and Holliday Grainger (Cinderella) as young twentysomethings staggering into adulthood while maintaining a commitment to relentless partying. In other words, it's probably the story of your life, and we're going to trust that any life lessons learned won't be overly earnest. Romeo San Vicente can't be tamed. Hotspots.LGBT | 71

T
he latest Cirque du Soleil spectacular to pitch its tent in Miami is extra fiery — and extra fresh. After touring five Latin American countries in 2017, and entertaining one million fans, Sép7imo Día – No Descansaré is making its U.S. debut. The show was written and directed by Michel Laprise, who directed Cirque´s KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities (as well as Madonna´s MDNA Tour!), and its official description makes it sound epic: “Sép7imo Día conjures a world outside of time, a place where emotions ebb and flow like the tide, pulsing to the rhythm of the band's emblematic songs.”

By Scott Holland
And by “band,” they don't just mean the talented group of musicians playing during the show. Sép7imo Día is inspired by the musical legacy of the iconic Argentine rock band Soda Stereo, a megastar trio that ruled the music scene throughout much of Latin America in the 1980s and '90s, before splitting up in 1997. In Sép7imo Día, Cirque has tried to capture the wave of euphoria that swept Latin America in 2007 when, after a decade of separation, Soda Stereo reunited for its Me Verás Volver Tour. The Cirque production celebrates the beloved band's deep connection with its fans, and in true rock-and-roll fashion, the show even
We interact with the audience a lot, so it's a very up-close-andpersonal show.” features a seatless area of the arena near the stage called the Zoom Zone, where select and, we assume, especially animated members of the audience take in the show while up on their feet. Before rising to join the fun in the Zoom Zone, I decided to first sit down with Artistic Director Sean McKeown to get the scoop on Sép7imo Día — and find out just what a Cirque du Soleil artistic director does.
Were you always a performer, even as a child?
Yes. As a boy, I went alone to a local pantomime production, and I got very interested. The next year, I participated as an actor and singer. I think I was 9 or 10. I became the principle character, and it was a great introduction to the stage.
What was your first professional gig?
I was 19 and working as an actor in Melbourne, Australia. I did a commercial
for a bank in Asia. They wanted students to get their first credit card.
When did you know performing would be your career?
I knew at an early age. I also played a musical instrument, so I didn't know what kind of performer I would be, but I knew I would be a performer. I eventually chose acting as the [discipline] I preferred.
How did you get hired at Cirque du Soleil?
I was doing a lot of voiceover work, [but days] I managed a group of people for a FOX cable company in Australia. The company went through a restructuring, and I found myself with a summer off — but being well paid! Cirque du Soleil was coming to town and needed ushers. I applied and got the job. The minute I walked into the big top, it felt like I came home, and I decided it was time to go back to pure and proper entertainment. From there, I went into backstage management,
Hotspots.LGBT | 87
and then general stage manager, and finally artistic director.
What are the duties of the artistic director? I am responsible for the entire artistic team: wardrobe, physiotherapists, stage management, artists, etc. Ultimately, I'm responsible for the look and the quality of the show, for seeing that it makes the appropriate evolutions, that the acrobatic level remains high, and that the audience has an amazing time — as they should when they come to see a show produced by Cirque du Soleil!
What Cirque shows have you worked on, other than this one? Do you have a favorite? I've worked on Alegria, Dralion, Quidam, The Beatles LOVE and now Sép7imo Día – No Descansaré. I've loved every show when I was working on it, so I can't pick just one. It's like asking a father to pick a favorite child: It's too difficult!
You've toured all over the world. Do you have a favorite city? In the last 18 years, I've played shows in 170 cities worldwide, so it's hard to pick. But I do 88 | Hotspots.LGBT
adore London. And in the States, I love New York City and San Francisco.
What should readers expect from “Sép7imo Día”? A “wow” show with a lot of original acrobatics. We also interact with the audience a lot, so it's a very up-close-andpersonal show. They should also expect beautiful live music, and everything Cirque is known for!
Sép7imo Día is at Watsco Center in Coral Gables through April 22nd. For info and tickets (from $55), visit: cirquedusoleil.com/Sép7imo-dia.

LAURA INGRAHAM BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI
H
Rabbi David Seidenberg recently wrote a blog post about his college classmate, FOX News host Laura Ingraham: “Back in 1984, when we were both enrolled at Dartmouth College, she secretly recorded a confidential support group for gay students, and published a transcript in The Dartmouth Review — complete with the names of the students at the meeting, students who were in the closet, back in the day when being outed could mean getting rejected for jobs and attacked by drunken frat boys.” Many years later Ingraham expressed regret over this. That’s something she has a knack for, apparently: doing totally reprehensible things and then offering a weak apology. Case in point: Ingraham’s recent Twitter tantrum in which she teased Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg because he didn’t get accepted to a number of colleges he’d applied to. As you know, Hogg is a high school student. A 17-year-old. A child. Ingraham is, purportedly, a fullgrown adult. One without a filter or any compassion. This isn’t the first time Ingraham has bared her fangs at a child. She has described the existence of transgender kids as “this new gender-bending phenomenon, which clearly is facilitated and encouraged by a popular culture that seems to have concluded that, you know, traditional gender roles are yesterday’s news.” Traditional gender roles, which have been used to keep women subservient and men violent, and are the basis for sexism, homophobia and transphobia, are something the right-wing loves to champion, which makes sense when you consider how morally corrupt their agenda is. Ingraham has a gay brother. You would think that might bring her around on issues of LGBTQ equality, but it hasn’t. She’s spoken out against marriage equality, saying she feared it would make Catholics look like bad people for discriminating against gays.
This isn’t the first time Ingraham has bared her fangs at a child.” I could go on and on about the many racist and stupid things Ingraham has said, but you can Google that shit if you want. Instead, I would like to predict that at some point in the future people will look back at the time when some Americans vilified young survivors of a horrific school shooting for daring to demand that elected officials do something to curb gun violence, and they will wonder how a country that valued its guns more than its children managed to survive. That is, of course, assuming we have a future. If we continue like this, we’ll be a country full of angry, heavily armed white men in MAGA and “Who Farted?” hats. Of course, that probably wouldn’t sound like a bad outcome to Ingraham. After all, instead of having advertisers flee her show after her latest vile outburst, her ratings would go through the roof. And she wouldn’t have to apologize to anybody. In case that golden future fails to materialize, maybe Ingraham could just try being a better person.

ON YOUR WORKOUTS THIS SPRING! by Tom Bonanti
S
pring is a wonderful time of the year: The whole world hits refresh! It's a great season to clean out closets, build new habits, and get out and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. With this renewed enthusiasm, it's also an ideal time to put the fire back into your fitness regimen. This week I count down my springtime checklist for better workouts and a healthier, happier, more attractive you.
#5 Update your workout drag. Still wearing grandpa's old cotton tshirts and baggy shorts? Why not replace worn-out duds with sexy shorts and tanks 100 | Hotspots.LGBT
in lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics? While you're shopping, make new sneakers a priority. All exercise requires a strong, supportive base, so if you feel like splurging, do it on shoes. If you can, invest in both a cross-trainer for lifting and a solid, durable running shoe for cardio work. Your feet are worth the expense.
#4 Clean out your cupboards. Candy, cookies, pretzels, and chips add nothing to your life except empty calories and unwanted inches on your waistline. Processed meats and cheeses, white bread and potatoes, and high-fat condiments like mayonnaise and bottled salad dressings are even worse for
your health. Try shopping at an outdoor farmers market for fresh fruits, vegetables,
race — anything! Just keep your exercise fun, challenging, and a consistent part of your daily life.
#2 You do you. whole grains, and nuts. Supplement those staples with fresh cuts of meat and fish from your local butcher, fishmonger, or grocery. Eating healthier can help you feel better, live longer and look sexier.
Training and shaping your body is a lifetime project that requires effort, work, and patience to accomplish great things. Customizing a plan to suit your own abilities and preferences is key. If you loathe counting calories, focus instead on portion control. Despise the idea of dieting? Turn your attention to developing a creative nutritional plan. Don't have endless hours to spend in the gym? Start with lifting weights twice a week for 20 minutes. Do some power walking with a co-worker at lunchtime. There are myriad opportunities to slide into a health and fitness routine, make it your own, and keep it consistent.
#3 Shake up your fitness routine. If you have a particular body part you want to tone or build, find some online workouts focused on that area, and add a few new exercises to your routine. Keep an eye on Twitter and Facebook for articles and products that might be helpful, and be open to feedback and suggestions from friends. You may even want to team up with a likeminded workout bud. Change gyms, if necessary. Mix things up with outdoor sports like swimming, tennis, golf, or running. Hire a personal trainer, take a class, sign up for a
#1 Check up before you tune up. Only about 20 percent of Americans see their doctor for a yearly exam. Sure, we all hate waiting rooms — not to mention, a bossy doctor reading us the riot act. But high cholesterol, out-of-control blood pressure and vitamin deficiencies can be silent killers over time. So, be sure to have an expert take a look under the hood before you hit the gas on your exciting new spring fitness regimen!

The Arsht Center's Fun Home puts the “fun” in dysfunctional. ||||||||||||||||||||||||||| BY BILL HENNING rowing up is hard. Especially when you've got a secret. And you have to help out at the family business: a funeral home. What's that you say? Sounds like perfect material for a musical! Well, of course it is. And not just any musical: A five-time Tony Award-winner that made its South Florida debut just last week. Fun Home is the story of Alison, a successful, forty-something graphic novelist who's looking back on her life as she writes — and draws — her autobiography. The musical is based on the bestselling memoir by Alison Bechdel, creator of the beloved, long-running (1983–2008) comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For (and winner of a 2014 MacArthur Fellows “genius grant”). The show focuses on two periods in Alison's life: at age 10, growing up in a family dominated by her brilliant father and working with her brothers in the funeral home (which inspires the show's title song!); and as a 19-year-old college freshman, out on her own for the first time and 114 | Hotspots.LGBT
struggling to tell the family she's a lesbian. But Alison isn't the only one with something to hide. Her father Bruce has secrets too. What kind of secrets? The kind that might be particularly resonant for LGBT audiences. What follows is a funny, heart-achingly honest tale of coming out and coming of age, a story that touches on everything from first love, untimely death, and gender roles to compulsive home renovation, The Partridge Family, and the timeless allure of keychaintoting bulldykes. The Arsht production closes out the season for its Theater Up Close Series, and you certainly can get up close to all the Fun because the show is staged in the plus intime Carnival Studio Theater. Tucked inside the Ziff Ballet Opera House, this 60-by-70-foot “black box” performance space seats fewer than 300 people. It's the perfect venue for the musical, which was developed over a period of five years — and workshopped everywhere from the Ojai Playwrights Conference to Sundance Theatre
Lab to New York City's Public Theater — before opening at Circle in the Square Theatre in 2015. Broadway's first show to feature an out, lesbian lead character, Fun Home racked up enough awards to fill a Subaru Outback before hitting the Tony trifecta: winning the 2015 awards for Best Musical, and Best Book of a Musical, and Best Score (New York Times critic Anthony Tomassini dubbed Jeanine Tesori's score a “masterpiece”). Helming the Arsht production is Zoetic Stage Artistic Director Stuart Meltzer. “Fun Home is a unique musical that touches audiences' souls with its clear storytelling and honesty,” he says. “The musical is unafraid and Alison Bechdel's story resonates with so many people because we all can relate to the dynamics of family, whether that family is functional or dysfunctional.”
Fun Home runs Thursday–Sunday through May 13 at the Arsht Center's Carnival Studio Theater. For tix ($50–$55): 305-949-6722 or arshtcenter.org.
If you've got any friends with functional families, tell 'em their tickets are on me!
